RENO COUNTY —The bales are still burning after a large fire in Reno County.

Just before 9:30pm Friday,&nbsp;Reno County Fire District 7 was notified of a large hay fire at the Turon Feedlot, according to Reno County Emergency Management. Crews found 2100 hay bales on fire.

Mutual aid was requested from Fire Districts 4 and 6.

Crews worked with feedlot staff to move unburned hay. The fire was contained to the hay pile. Feedlot staff continues monitoring the fire. The hay pile will be burning for several days.&nbsp; &nbsp;Authorities have not released details on what caused the fire.

2,100 hay bales lost in Kansas feedlot fire will burn for days

DOUGLAS COUNTY —A Kansas man is going back to prison for a gun crime in Kansas.

&nbsp;Last week, Howard C. Levite Jr., 32, of Leavenworth, was sentenced to 40 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections in the non-fatal shooting of a man at a Lawrence fast food restaurant in 2019, according to&nbsp;Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez.

“Gun violence claims more than 120 lives in our country each day,” District Attorney Valdez said. “My office is committed to helping to ensure that no one in our community lives in fear of gun violence.”

Judge Sally Pokorny also sentenced Levite, who pleaded no contest to attempted aggravated battery in May 2024, to 24 months post-release supervision. Levite is to serve the sentence consecutively to an unrelated federal conviction.

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on October 26, 2019, when Levite shot a then 50-year-old man following an altercation in the parking lot of McDonald’s, 1309 W. 6th St., Lawrence.

Levite has previous convictions for robbery and drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

JOHNSON COUNTY —Authorities are working to determine the cause of a Kansas house fire.

Just after 10:30a.m. Friday crews from Olathe and Overland Park responded to a fire at a home&nbsp;near 167th Street and Brougham Drive, according to a social media report from Olathe Fire.

A 911 caller reported “fire on the back of house.” The damage to the home is extensive. There were no injuries reported. The&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/hashtag/RedCross?src=hashtag_click">RedCross</a>&nbsp;is assisting family.

Extensive damage after fire at Kansas home

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel said Saturday it rescued four hostages who were kidnapped in a Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, in the largest such hostage recovery operation since the war with Hamas began in Gaza.

The army said it rescued Noa Argamani, 25; Almog Meir Jan, 21; Andrey Kozlov, 27; and Shlomi Ziv, 40, in a complex special daytime operation in Nuseirat. The hostages were rescued in two separate locations in the heart of Nuseirat, it said.

Hamas kidnapped some 250 hostages during its attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, which triggered the Israel-Hamas war. About half were released in a weeklong cease-fire in November. Israel says more than 130 hostages remain, with about a quarter of those believed dead, and divisions are deepening in the country over the best way to bring them home.

The rescue comes as international pressure mounts on Israel to limit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-05-26-2024-eb25eb70d2c7b9e6bcd0497060eccbca">civilian bloodshed</a>&nbsp;in its war in Gaza, which reached its eighth month on Friday. Israel rescues 4 hostages in Gaza after 245 days in captivity

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack on a Kansas teen, have made two arrests and continue to search for another suspect.

Just after noon May 26, police responded to a disturbance in the 400 block of N Dodge in Wichita, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses. The victim in this case, an 18-year-old girl later arrived at an area hospital with second degree burns to the face and neck believed to be caused by a suspect throwing an acidic liquid on her during a physical fight. Police do not believe the attack was a random incident.

Immediately following the incident, investigators with the WPD Felony Assault unit along with patrol officers began looking for three suspects. On June 5, officers with the Patrol North Community Response Team located and arrested two 18-year-old suspects. According to Sedgwick County booking records, Ye'Kira Acoya Hollins and Tayronnia Jontashia West were jailed in connection with the crime. On Friday, West was charged with Aggravated Battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp; Hollins, 18, met the requirement of bond and is scheduled for court on June 20.

Investigators are still attempting to locate a third suspect, a 16-year-old black female of Topeka.

Search continues for suspect in acid attack on Kan. teen

KANSAS CITY— Police investigating a deadly 4-vehicle crash have identified the victim as 54-year-old Troy Chatman, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

Just after 7:30p.m. June 1, a Chevrolet Equinox was eastbound on Interstate 70 at a high rate of speed. As the Chevy approached Manchester, the vehicle struck a Toyota Camry, a Ford Expedition driven by Chatman and a Ford F150 that were all traveling eastbound, according to&nbsp;Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

The impact caused the Expedition to go into a broad slide and overturn. The Expedition rolled over the top of the Toyota and down an embankment, ejecting Chatman, who was the sole occupant out of the SUV onto the shoulder of the highway.

EMS transported the driver of the Chevy Equinox to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota and the driver and front seat passenger of the F150 were all uninjured in the collision. 

An investigation, to include suspected impairment, is ongoing. 

All lanes of eastbound I-70 were closed to traffic at Manchester for approximately three hours. This is fatality #45 compared to #32 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military-built pier designed to carry badly needed aid into Gaza by boat has been reconnected to the beach in the besieged territory after a section broke apart in storms and rough seas, and food and other supplies will begin to flow soon, U.S. Central Command announced Friday.

The section that connects to the beach in Gaza, the causeway, was rebuilt nearly two weeks after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gaza-israel-humanitarian-aid-us-pier-77d0cf1c1bd420042dc4cb6f4ad76ccb">heavy storms damaged it</a>&nbsp;and abruptly halted what had already been a troubled delivery route.

“On Friday in Gaza, U.S. forces successfully attached the temporary pier to the Gaza beach,” Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, told reporters by phone Friday. “We expect to resume delivery of humanitarian assistance from the sea in the coming days.”

Cooper said operations at the reconnected pier will be ramped up soon with a goal to get 1 million pounds (450,000 kilograms) of food and other supplies moving through the pier into Gaza every two days.

The pier was only operational for a week before a storm broke it apart, and had initially struggled to reach delivery goals. Weather was a factor, and early efforts to get aid from the pier into Gaza were disrupted as civilians desperate for food stormed the trucks that aid agencies were using to transport the food to the warehouses for distribution.

However before it broke apart the pier had been gradually increasing aid movement each day. Cooper said Friday that the lessons learned from that initial week of operations made him confident higher levels of aid throughout could be attained now.

A large section of the causeway broke apart May 25 as heavy winds and high seas hit the area, and four Army vessels operating there went aground, injuring three service members, including one who remains in critical condition. The damage was the latest stumbling block in what has been a persistent struggle to get food to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-hunger-un-07afb7fe4a1654f54b81b944a0dab535">starving Palestinians</a>&nbsp;during the nearly 8-month-old&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">Israel-Hamas war</a>.

The maritime route for a limited time had been an additional way to help get more aid into Gaza because&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-05-13-2024-6fae60f33d3664c282d5f535beb13c98">the Israeli offensive in the southern city of Rafah</a>&nbsp;has made it difficult, if not impossible at times, to get anything through land routes that are far more productive. Israel's Rafah military operations and military strikes in northern Gaza had also temporarily halted U.S. airdrops of food.

Cooper said Friday the U.S. also expects to resume those airdrops in the coming days.

President Joe Biden's administration has said from the start that the pier wasn’t meant to be a total solution and that any amount of aid helps.

After the May 25 storm damage to the causeway, large sections were disconnected and moved to the Israeli port for repairs. In addition, two of the U.S. Army boats that went aground during the same bad weather near Ashkelon in Israel have been freed.

Two other Army boats two beached onto the Gaza shoreline took on a lot of water and sand and the Israeli Navy has been helping with the repairs, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said.

Biden, a Democrat, announced&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-news-03-07-24-5657eedc005040694a9ab935ce3e39e5">his plan for the U.S. military to build a pier</a>&nbsp;during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/state-of-union-biden-gaza-ukraine-israel-1a42ff9d4ef3e0f2753e43ac8d39fc18">his State of the Union address</a>&nbsp;in early March, and the military said it would take about 60 days to get it installed and operational. The initial cost was estimated at $320 million, but Singh said earlier this week that the price had dropped to $230 million, due to contributions from Britain and because the cost of contracting trucks and other equipment was less than expected.

It took a bit longer than the planned two months for installation, with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-gaza-aid-us-pier-05-17-2024-336c810724d107a41bb6628c721aea7c">the first trucks carrying aid</a>&nbsp;for the Gaza Strip rolling down the pier on May 17. Just a day later, crowds overran a convoy of trucks as they headed into Gaza, stripping the cargo from 11 of the 16 vehicles before they reached a U.N. warehouse.

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas judge sentenced a man who admitted to stabbing a woman to death and stuffing her body into a trash can in 2018.

On May 29, a judge sentenced 53-year-old Ronald Lee Kidwell to 18-years in prison for the death of 43-year-old MeShon Cooper in July 2018, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's Office.

Earlier this year, Kidwell pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the case.&nbsp;

Kidwell is white and Cooper was black. At the time of the killing,&nbsp;the FBI said it was investigating the case as a possible hate crime.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kidwell was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmbc.com/article/man-ordered-to-trial-in-2018-death-of-woman-in-shawnee/26415099" target="_blank">initially ordered</a>&nbsp;to stand trial for intentional second-degree murder in 2019, five years before his eventual guilty plea.

Cooper was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmbc.com/article/police-asking-for-help-to-find-missing-woman-last-seen-friday-in-joco/22084112" target="_blank">reported missing</a>&nbsp;on July 6, 2018. The day she went missing, police located her vehicle with the keys inside near East Seventh Street and Myrtle Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

Three days later, her body was found after investigators traced Cooper's phone to Kidwell's home in Shawnee, Kansas.

According to a police affidavit, Kidwell told police Cooper attacked him at his home and threatened to tell everyone that he is HIV positive. He said he “flipped out” when Cooper hit him in the hand with a knife, which he grabbed before stabbing and killing her.

JACKSON COUNTY —A long-time cafe in northeast Kansas was destroyed in a fire on Friday.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Friday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire at the Whiting Café, 308 Whiting Avenue in the small rural Kansas community of Whiting, according to Sheriff&nbsp; Tim Morse.

Fire departments from Whiting, Netawaka, Holton and Horton responded along with Jackson County EMS.&nbsp; Fire crews battled the blaze bringing the fire under control just before 7:30a.m.&nbsp; The Whiting Café has been in business nearly 40 years, and the establishment appeared to be a complete loss. 

Friday morning the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene and was investigating the origin of the fire.

ARVADA, Colo. —Four people were injured in a small plane crash into the front yard of a home near Denver.

Caterpillar to close one Kansas location

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive lineman B.J. Thompson remained hospitalized but was awake and responsive on Friday, one day after the second-year pro experienced a seizure during a team meeting and went into cardiac arrest at the Kansas City practice facility.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said the 25-year-old Thompson was placed on a ventilator and heavily sedated Thursday night at the University of Kansas Health System. He was brought out of sedation on Friday and his prognosis is good.

“He's alert. He's a wake. He's coming through quite well,” Burkholder said. “We don't have a diagnosis and in medicine sometimes you don't have that. But he's awake and alert and he's headed in the right direction.”

Thompson, a fifth-round draft pick out of Stephen F. Austin last year, was in the meeting room before the Chiefs were scheduled to have their final voluntary workout of the offseason. He began to have a seizure and kicker Harrison Butker immediately ran to the trainer's room and summoned assistant trainers Julie Frymyer and David Glover.

They were joined by Burkholder in helping Thompson as he went into cardiac arrest. Dr. Jean-Philippe Darche soon arrived from the Kansas Health Sports Medicine and Performance Center, which adjoins the practice facility.

“Our team of that group of people provided CPR for him,” Burkholder said. “He had one AED shock and came back. He was in cardiac arrest for less than a minute, a minute and a half. Our players, security staff, coaching staff — they were phenomenal in handling the crisis. We then turned him over to the Kansas City (Missouri) Fire Department.”

The NFL mandates that teams practice emergency action plans for a variety of situations, including cardiac crises like the one that Thompson experienced. The Chiefs had just completed their most recent practice session on Monday.

“I jumped in there from my office,” coach Andy Reid said. “I'm not much help; they had it under control. But that's tough. That's a tough situation. We've been through a couple of those in my time. It's never fun. Thank goodness, though, that if it had to happen, no better place than right here, where you had the support unit that knows what to do.”

The Chiefs gave players the rest of Thursday off, pushing the final organized team activity to Friday. They have their mandatory three-day minicamp next week before breaking until training camp in late July in St. Joseph, Missouri.

“I think it was good to get them out of here yesterday,” Reid said, “and we've got support people here that can help them if they needed it for what they saw. That's not a real pleasant thing to see. They came back today with good energy, but we kept them abreast all the way through, right to the end of practice there.”

Thompson played in only one game during his rookie season, the regular-season finale against the Chargers, when Kansas City already had clinched its playoff spot and the outcome was meaningless. Thompson had two tackles in that game.

“I'm just glad to see he's doing good,” said Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis, who is close to Thompson from playing at the same position. “You never want that for anyone and it's hard, but I will say this, we're blessed to have such great teammates and trainers to help him, and were able and ready for that situation.”

PARIS (AP) — U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday for the first time publicly apologized to Ukraine for a monthslong congressional holdup in American military assistance that let Russia make&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">gains on the battlefield</a>.

Biden met in Paris with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who appealed for bipartisan U.S. support going forward “like it was during World War II.”

A day earlier, the two had attended&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-dday-80th-anniversary-france-b868fe789d2fe95b776c24c17543b510">ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings</a>&nbsp;in Normandy, where Biden had drawn common cause between the allied forces that helped free Europe from Nazi Germany and today's effort to support Ukraine against Russia's invasion and Zelenskyy had been greeted with a rapt ovation.

“I apologize for those weeks of not knowing what’s going to happen in terms of funding,” Biden said, referring to the six-month holdup by conservative Republicans in Congress to a $61 billion&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-mike-johnson-ukraine-israel-b72aed9b195818735d24363f2bc34ea4">military aid package</a>&nbsp;for Ukraine. Still, the Democratic president insisted that the American people were standing by Ukraine for the long haul. “We’re still in. Completely. Thoroughly,” he said.

The apology — and Zelenskyy’s plea for rock-solid support akin to the allied coalition in WWII — served as a reminder that for all of Biden’s talk of an unflagging U.S commitment to Ukraine, recalcitrance among congressional Republicans and an isolationist strain in American politics have exposed its fragility. And, although unremarked upon, the specter of Donald Trump’s candidacy loomed over the discussion, as the Republican former president and the presumptive nominee has spoken positively of Russian President Vladimir Putin and sparked Ukrainian concerns that he would call for it to cede territory to end the conflict.

Zelenskyy pressed for all Americans to support his country's defense against Russia's invasion, and he thanked lawmakers for eventually coming together to approve the weapons package, which has allowed Ukraine to stem Russian advances in recent weeks.

“It’s very important that in this unity, United States of America, all American people stay with Ukraine like it was during World War II,” Zelenskyy said. "How the United States helped to save human lives, to save Europe. And we count on your continuing support in standing with us shoulder to shoulder.”

The United States is by far Kyiv’s biggest supplier of wartime support, and Ukraine is trying to fend off an intense&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-kharkiv-attacks-5023c3e67af30fc95b954a6f044112dc">Russian offensive</a>&nbsp;in eastern areas of the country. The push is focused on the Ukrainian border regions of Kharkiv and Donetsk, but Ukrainian officials say it could spread as Russia's bigger army seeks to make its advantage tell.

The offensive is seeking to exploit Kyiv’s shortages of ammunition and troops along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line.

The slow pace of delivery of pledged Western weaponry has long frustrated Zelenskyy, as has Biden’s hesitation over supplying more hardware for fear of provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin. That has caused tension in their relationship.

The U.S. will send about $225 million in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-russia-military-aid-us-e0a07e45c4b6656d128c5df8c51357fb">military aid</a>&nbsp;to Ukraine, Biden announced Friday. The latest package includes munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, as well as mortar systems and an array of artillery rounds, U.S. officials said Thursday.

A Ukrainian strike on its partially-occupied Luhansk region using U.S.-made ATACMS missiles killed three people and injured 35 others Friday, local Moscow-appointed authorities said.

Biden cast the additional aid in his meeting with Zelenskyy as money to “reconstruct the electric grid” in Ukraine, a reference aides said was to additional air defense and missile defense systems in the new package.

Easing their stance amid Russia's most recent onslaught and with Ukraine's army reeling, some NATO allies including the U.S. said last week they would allow Ukraine to use weapons they deliver to Kyiv&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-kharkiv-biden-missiles-9da696ff36130fe8c7033f3960eff382">to carry out limited attacks inside Russia</a>.

That step brought a furious response from the Kremlin, which warned that Europe's biggest conflict since World War II could spin out of control.

Biden and Zelenskyy attended&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d-day-france-russia-ukraine-wwii-7b6896a9d891fb2d2f75b29e1cfd67ad">the anniversary events</a>&nbsp;of D-Day in Normandy, northern France, on Thursday, along with European leaders who have supported Kyiv’s efforts in the war.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-dday-80th-anniversary-france-b868fe789d2fe95b776c24c17543b510">Biden pledged</a>&nbsp;“we will not walk away” from Ukraine, drawing a direct line from the fight to liberate Europe from Nazi domination to today’s war against Russian aggression.

Ukraine depicts its fight against the Kremlin's forces as a clash between Western democratic freedom and Russian tyranny. Russia says it is defending itself against a menacing eastward expansion of the NATO military alliance.

In a 20-minute speech Friday at the National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament, Zelenskyy drew a parallel with the sacrifices made during World War II and his country's current fight.

“This battle is a crossroads," Zelenskyy said. "A moment where we can now write history the way we need it. Or we can become victims of history as it suits … our enemy.”

Zelenskyy, who spoke in Ukrainian, was frequently interrupted by lawmakers’ applause and cheers. He prompted a standing ovation when he said in French: “Dear France, I thank you for standing by our side as we defend life.”

French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, announced late Thursday that France will provide Ukraine with its Mirage combat aircraft.

Macron has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine. He said in February that putting Western troops on the ground in Ukraine is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/paris-conference-support-ukraine-zelenskyy-c458a1df3f9a7626128cdeb84050d469">not “ruled out.”</a>

Zelenskyy began a day of meetings in Paris with an official welcome ceremony at the golden-domed Invalides monument, site of Napoleon’s tomb.

During the day, Zelenskyy skipped a scheduled visit to the Nexter arms manufacturer in Versailles, which makes the Caesar self-propelled howitzers that are among the weapons provided by France to Kyiv’s forces. He went instead to France’s military headquarters with defense manufacturers, and his delegation signed defense agreements.

He was also to meet with Macron at the Élysée Palace.

Zelenskyy’s foreign trips aim to keep Ukraine’s plight in the public eye, secure more military help for its fight against Russia’s invasion and lock in long-term Western support through&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-russia-ukraine-war-zelenskyy-hungary-ae48c473927d54f5053f3cc276f5493e">bilateral alliances</a>.

PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. -&nbsp;The National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service have confirmed plague as the cause of a prairie dog die off in Badlands National Park, Buffalo Gap National Grassland, and the greater Conata-Badlands ecosystem in South Dakota, based on a test result received last month, according to a statement from the U.S. National Park Service.&nbsp;

The risk to humans remains low, however, plague is concerning. The disease has not been detected in Conata Basin since 2009, when it was responsible for killing more than 80 percent of the remaining population of black-footed ferrets, one of the most endangered mammals in the world.

Plague is a non-native bacterial disease that occurs in rodents and their fleas throughout the western United States. It was introduced into the U.S. from rats aboard ships in the early 1900’s and has since become endemic through the western U.S. Approximately seven human cases occur every year, primarily in the southwestern U.S. and California. 

Most cases are transmitted through the bite of an infected flea, but humans can also be infected through contact with infected rodents, including animal carcasses, or by breathing infectious particles from an infected animal, sick pet, or sick human. South Dakota has never reported a human plague case, although cases in rodents such as prairie dogs were first reported in 2005.&nbsp;

Symptoms usually begin 2-6 days after exposure and include flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle aches, as well as painful swelling at the site of a flea bite and the nearest lymph node. Symptoms can progress to blood infection and severe respiratory illness if not treated promptly. 

Plague can be treated with antibiotics but can be fatal if treatment is delayed. Although rare, infections acquired by breathing in infectious bacteria develop symptoms within 1-3 days and are most often fatal if not treated shortly after the onset of symptoms.&nbsp;Plague is a rare disease but is a risk throughout much of the western United States. Plague can be prevented by practicing the following recommendations:

“We are concerned about the impacts to the black-footed ferret population and are taking necessary action to protect this important keystone species,” said Eric Veach, Superintendent of Badlands National Park. “Extensive conservation efforts in 2009 to manage the spread of plague were able to preserve a black-footed ferret population in the Conata-Badlands ecosystem, where the largest free-ranging black-footed ferret population in the world now resides.” The National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and conservation partners are working to apply emergency flea control agents to stop the further spread of plague and to monitor for plague activity in the Conata-Badlands ecosystem to protect the black-footed ferret population and reduce any risks to human health. The measure takes effect immediately because the new policy is triggered when arrests for illegal entry reach 2,500. About 4,000 people already are entering the U.S. each day. It was a major policy shift on a critical election-year issue that's exposed Biden to Republican criticism over an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/immigration">unprecedented surge</a>&nbsp;in new arrivals in an election year.

Advocates say it will put migrants in danger and violate international obligations to provide safe haven to people whose lives are threatened. The Biden administration denies that.

There are also serious questions of whether the new measure can stop large-scale migrant entries. Mexico has agreed to take back migrants who are not Mexican, but only in limited numbers. And the Biden administration doesn't have the money and diplomatic support it needs to deport migrants long distances, to China and countries in Africa, for example.

Those who claim asylum today are generally free to live and work in the United States while their claims slowly wind through&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-asylum-border-courts-deportation-miami-56098ced64bf136172f0224113dabeb6">overwhelmed immigration courts</a>.

Some questions and answers about Biden’s presidential proclamation:

The threshold triggers a halt on asylum until average daily arrests for illegal crossings fall below 1,500 for a week straight. The last time crossings were that low was in July 2020, during the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are ready to repatriate a record number of people in the coming days,” Blas Nuñez-Neto, assistant homeland security secretary for border and immigration policy, said in a conference call for Spanish-language reporters.

Migrants who express fear for their safety if they're deported will be screened by U.S. asylum officers but under a higher standard than what's currently in place. If they pass, they can remain to pursue other forms of humanitarian protection, including those laid out in the U.N. Convention Against Torture.

Unaccompanied children are exempt, raising the possibility that some parents may send their sons and daughters across the border without them.

The U.S. has limited funding to fly people home to more than 100 countries, including many in Africa and Asia. It also lacks diplomatic sway and logistical arrangements to deport large numbers to many countries, including China, Russia and Venezuela.

This year, Mexico has also made it far more difficult for migrants to reach the U.S. border, largely by preventing them from riding freight trains and stopping them on buses to turn them around to southern Mexico. This is the latest in a series of measures under the Biden and Trump administrations to deter asylum-seekers, none of which have had lasting impact.

In May 2023, Biden imposed similar obstacles to asylum for anyone who crossed the border illegally after passing through another country, such as Mexico. Double homicide at KC home investigated as a domestic violence

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The City of Wichita announced Thursday that it is considering the re-use of the former Park Elementary School facility at&nbsp;1025 N. Main in Wichita as the future Multi-Agency Center (MAC), a one-stop, wraparound homeless services coordinator, as well as space for congregate, non-congregate and emergency housing, according to a media release from the city.

Earlier this year, Wichita Public Schools (WPS) announced it would close six schools before the 2024-2025 school year to reallocate resources. The City approached WPS after the announcement to inquire about the potential availability of Park Elementary as it is ideally located near other homeless service providers and would offer a centralized location for the MAC. 

As such, it is the intent of the City, pending due diligence on the property, to acquire the building from WPS for a nominal fee.If the transaction occurs on schedule, the City intends to use the facility for the 2024-2025 winter emergency shelter and could open the full-service MAC in 2026. 

The property will include a no-barrier, short term shelter open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round and feature comprehensive services to connect unhoused individuals to services and resources to transition them from shelter services into affordable housing.The City will host a community open house this Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Advanced Learning Library in downtown Wichita to answer questions and address community concerns.

City plans to convert closed Kan. elementary school to homeless shelter

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Wichita Police are trying to locate Anjaliyah S. Orange and Jeremiah Z. Walker as they may have information about a homicide that occurred on June 4, 2024, in the 4800 block of East Funston. 

Just after 9:30p.m. Tuesday, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 4800 block of East Funston, according to Police Captain Aaron Moses.

Wichita Police, Wichita Fire, and Sedgwick County EMS responded to the scene and found 27- year-old Quentin Gordon suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wichita Police Department Homicide Investigators, in collaboration with patrol officers, immediately began their investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that Gordon was involved in an argument with another individual when the shooting occurred, indicating that this was not a random act of violence, according to Moses.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/houthis">Yemen's Houthi rebels</a>&nbsp;have unveiled a new, solid-fuel missile in their arsenal that resembles aspects of one earlier displayed by Iran that Tehran described as flying at hypersonic speeds.

The rebels fired its new “Palestine” missile, complete with a warhead painted like a Palestinian keffiyeh checkered scarf, at the southern Gulf of Aqaba port of Eilat in Israel on Monday. The attack set off air raid sirens but caused no reported damage or injuries.

Footage released by the Houthis late Wednesday showed the Palestine being raised on what appeared to be a mobile launcher and rising quickly into the air with plumes of white smoke coming from its engine. White smoke is common with solid-fuel missiles.

Solid-fuel missiles can be set up and fired faster than those containing liquid fuel. That's a key concern for the Houthis as their missile launch sites have been repeatedly targeted by U.S. and allied forces in recent months over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yemen-houthi-rebels-red-sea-attacks-iran-503de70230fba0cd7c992558e2d1b83a">the rebels' attacks on shipping through the Red Sea corridor</a>. One such strike hit the Houthis even before they were able to launch their missile.

The more irregular the missile’s flight path, such as a hypersonic missile with the ability to change directions, the more difficult it becomes to intercept.China is believed to be pursuing the weapons, as is America. Russia claims it has already used them.It remains unclear how well the Palestine maneuvers and at what speed it travels.Meanwhile Thursday, a commercial ship in the southern Red Sea near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait reported seeing explosions nearby, though no one was hurt, the British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. The private security firm Ambrey also reported the blasts. Though no one immediately claimed the attack, suspicion immediately fell on the Houthis.The U.S. military's Central Command said the Houthis fired one ballistic missile into the Red Sea, while America and its allies destroyed nine drones and two drone boats over the last day."There were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition or commercial ships," it said.
