KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Isbel drove in three runs, two on a go-ahead single in the fifth, and the Kansas City bullpen threw six shutout innings to help the Royals rally for a 7-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a doubleheader Thursday.

Salvador Perez also drove in a pair of runs for Kansas City, which beat the Rockies in extra innings on Tuesday night.

Their game Wednesday was rained out, resulting in the traditional doubleheader.

Cole Ragans lasted only three innings and 62 pitches for Kansas City before leaving with groin tightness. But the All-Star left-hander’s bullpen picked him up. Angel Zerpa (1-0) and Steven Cruz threw two scoreless innings apiece, Lucas Erceg breezed past the eighth, and Carlos Estévez handled the ninth for his sixth save.

Germán Márquez (0-4) allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks over four-plus innings for Colorado. He has lost his last four starts, allowing 18 earned runs in the past three, and has only made it through the sixth inning once this season.

Jordan Beck and Hunter Goodman homered for the struggling Rockies, but they were the only real bright spots. Colorado (4-19) is off to the worst start in franchise history, and it has lost 12 consecutive road games — one shy of the club record — since beating the Rays on March 29 in its opening series of the season.

Isbel’s slap down the first-base line with two outs in the fifth bounced out of Michael Toglia’s glove and all the way to the dugout fence. That allowed Perez and Cavan Biggio to score, breaking a 4-all tie.

Márquez struck out Vinnie Pasquantino to end the fourth inning, becoming the first Rockies pitcher with 1,000 career strikeouts. It was the last out Márquez recorded in the game.

The Rockies send RHP Chase Dollander (1-2, 7.36) against Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (1-3, 4.57) in Game 2 on Thursday.

Q:&nbsp;Are there things that tell you that the passing game is going to be what you hoped it would be last year and how confident are you that you can get to that point?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Obviously, everything looks great right now. I mean, getting the guys back healthy as far as Rashee (Rice) and having Hollywood (Brown) fully healthy and Xavier (Worthy) in year two – I think the offense has the chance to be really, really good. It’s just about keeping building – I’m excited to kind of have these guys again just with – we’ve had a lot of turnover in the receiving room, and it seems like the core group will be back in its entirety. So, the goal is to try to build on it and get even better and try to get back to some of the explosive passing plays that we’ve done in years past.”

Q:&nbsp;How is Rashee Rice looking and what are your expectations for him coming off the injury?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“The expectations are high. I mean, he (Rashee Rice) looks really good, he’s running routes, he’s catching the football. I don’t know when we get back into the actual OTA’s how much he’ll be able to do, but he’s been able to do everything here as far as running routes and everything like that. I know it was unfortunate how he got hurt last year, but it was so early in the season that he’s going to get pretty much a complete offseason, which I think will be big going into this season.”

Q:&nbsp;When you look back at the explosive pass game last year, how would you diagnose that?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I don’t feel like we got to the goal that we wanted to. I think the injuries definitely affected it a little bit, but my goal is to be better and try to give guys chances down the field. I mean, if you look at the only real positive, I think, from the Super Bowl was the second half of me just kind of getting back to we have to throw the ball deep, we have to push the envelope, and you saw Xavier (Worthy) making some big plays down the field. Trying to take positives away from that and from the rest of the season as well is we got the guys. It’s about me trusting them, making the throws downfield and letting them make plays.”

Q:&nbsp;How do you map out this time with the guys?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“It changes a little bit. I mean, I think we start off with some therapy in the morning, some stuff to get the guy’s bodies right, get a nice workout in and then get to the field and once you – even though we’re not in-person, we’re still doing virtual meetings. So, you know what the coaches are talking about and it’s about taking those routes to the field, explaining it to them the way I see it and the way that coaches see it and so that when we get back in the building here in a couple weeks, guys have a jumpstart of what we want, what we expect and how we’re going to go about our business. Like I said, it helps that this year it’s a lot of the same receivers that I’ve worked with previously, so not a ton of teaching. A lot of guys know what they need to do, it’s just refining their skills.”

Q:&nbsp;Is there any difference in motivation for you after coming off a Super Bowl loss rather than a Super Bowl win?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I mean, I’m pretty motivated anyways, but I think when you get some of those tiring sets or tiring reps that you’re in the workout, you have something in the back of your mind that you’re kind of pushing towards. You have that bad taste in your mouth from the last time you stepped on the football field and you kind of have to hear about it all offseason, so it gives you the push that you want to go out there and be better and show what we’re really about.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you feel like are your own points of emphasis this offseason and what are you trying to enhance?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“There was opportunities in games for deep shots that I either didn’t take or we missed barely, and I think if we can get back to hitting some of those throws – we preached about this last offseason, it opens up the rest of the offense. That helps the run game, that helps the medium-pass game – everything. You want to get back to that, defenses are starting to creep up a little bit more and force us to get back to the deep throws. We have to be versatile enough to be able to do both, hit the deep shots and hit the underneath stuff and that’s when we’ll be at our best.”

Q:&nbsp;How well do you know Gardner Minshew and what different perspective does he bring to the quarterback room?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I’ve obviously just kind of met him (Gardner Minshew) through passing. He’s been down here working with us, and I feel like we’re going to have a really good quarterback room just in general. I think having Gardner, a guy that loves the game, comes in with the right mentality every single day and a guy that pushes the envelope kind of like what we’ve been talking about. I think having someone that’s going to push me to take chances down the field, it’ll be big to continue to work and build our chemistry on the field but also push each other on it as well.”

Q:&nbsp;On seeing things that defenses don’t even do now and maybe knowing too much.&nbsp;

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, in a sense. I mean, I think just this last year especially – sometimes you give guys too much credit and knowing what the coverage is and how it’s supposed to be played and you know what your reads are. At the same time, you still have to go through your progression and that’s something that I have to continue to do. So, even if it’s a two-high coverage or whatever it is, there’s still chances for me to throw the ball down the field. I have to go through the progressions the right way and trust in the play call and trust in the protection and that’s something that I’ll try to get back to this year and stuff that I have to continue to get better at.”

Q: Regarding the left tackle issues last season, what was that like for you? What do you like about the moves that have been made so far in this offseason?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“It’s guys that were battling, that were trying to find their spot in the NFL to compete and be great. I thought guys did good jobs, obviously the Super Bowl left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth, but I thought throughout the season guys stepped up and made big plays happen and protected when they needed to protect. I think this year just trying to solidify the group. Bringing in a guy like Jaylon Moore, a guy that’s played some snaps (and) learned under (49ers OT) Trent Williams, someone that we have big expectations for. It’s just you get a core group of guys that you want to solidify, and you never can account for injuries and stuff like that but hopefully a group that will be together throughout the entire year. When you look at the great offensive lines a lot of times it’s a unit, it’s everybody, it’s not just one guy here or there. We’re excited for it, there will be healthy competition in camp, but we’ll find the five right guys that we’ll go with, and we’ll have guys behind them ready to go as well.”

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I’ve wanted to do it for a while but it was kind of one of those superstitions, I kept winning the Super Bowl which is a good thing but I didn’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it. I told everybody during the season that win or lose, if we win three in a row or if we lose, I’m getting a haircut like that’s enough. I’m very excited. I’ve looked at some videos from last year and I can’t believe all you guys let me keep that nappy hair for so long, like I look way better now with the short hair, so I’ll be keeping this going forward.”

Q: What was your draft experience like?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I get to spend it back at home, I was very – we were talking about it actually today when we were throwing with some of the guys. I was very excited to be able to spend it with the people that I grew up with and the people that believed in me. Being able to get drafted by the Chiefs and – the team that I wanted to draft me and draft me 10th&nbsp;overall, it was super exciting. You’re so nervous all day long. I remember I played a round of golf in the morning; I don’t remember one shot from that golf round, you’re just trying to keep your mind off of it. Then you live out your dream and you find out where you’re going to go. I got to do it with that people that were special to me and (that’s) a moment that I’ll have, and they’ll have for the rest of our lives.”

Q: How much feedback do you give on the draft prospects?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I talk to (General Manager) Brett Veach a lot of times about just the guys that he’s looking at and the thought process of the draft, but I let those guys make the decisions. I mean (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid has done it for a long time, Veach has done it for a long time. They’ve got a lot of great players around me and if they want me to give my input on guys, I’ll watch film and give input. At the end of the day, they know what’s best for the team and they’re going to go out there and pick the guys they think are going to keep us Super Bowl contenders.”

Q: What was it like having Hollywood Brown have to miss so much of the season? How excited are you to have him back?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“You all saw it in training camp, how special of a football player he (Hollywood Brown) is. He did everything the right way, was in the building early, was in the building late, was teaching other guys. For him to get injured in kind of a freak deal there in the first play of the preseason, and just, it stunk. I was happy to have him back at the end of the season and him to get back within the offense. I think now with hopefully him having the full offseason and training camp and keep staying healthy and continuing to fight through, his role will expand even more. I mean it’s kind of hard to throw guys in at the end of the season and try to give them a huge role. I think you can see when he gets the football in his hands and he has a huge role in our offense, it makes everybody go. Excited for him and also that receiving room just in general are all really good friends and want each other to have success. I think we can be one of the better receiver rooms in the league with the guys that we have in it.”

Bellamy was picked to the second-team with a 5-7 mark at the No. 1 position in KCAC play for the Coyotes. She had a 5-12 overall record in dual competition all at the No. 1 position, playing against some of the top competition in the KCAC and the region.

Maddock earns KCAC Baseball weekly honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;The Kansas City Chiefs will take their annual Season Ticket Member Draft Fest, presented by Branson Lakes Area, on the road in 2025 with parties at both Kansas City-area Chicken N Pickle locations on Friday, April 25.

The free event – already sold out at both locations – is available exclusively to Season Ticket Members who secured their tickets in advance. It will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, on-stage programming, a DJ, and the NFL Draft television broadcast. Doors at both locations will open at 6 p.m., and the event is scheduled to conclude after the Chiefs make their first pick of the third round (66th&nbsp;overall). Guests are welcome to stay at either Chicken N Pickle location for the remainder of Friday’s Draft coverage.

Kansas City Ambassador Shawn Barber will lead the entertainment and stage program at Chicken N Pickle Overland Park, while Ambassador Danan Hughes will host at Chicken N Pickle North Kansas City. The 2025 Chiefs Hall of Fame inductee – who will be announced earlier in the day on Friday – will make an appearance at both locations Friday evening, with additional special guests planned. KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;The Kansas City Chiefs will take their annual Season Ticket Member Draft Fest, presented by Branson Lakes Area, on the road in 2025 with parties at both Kansas City-area Chicken N Pickle locations on Friday, April 25.The free event – already sold out at both locations – is available exclusively to Season Ticket Members who secured their tickets in advance. It will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, on-stage programming, a DJ, and the NFL Draft television broadcast. Doors at both locations will open at 6 p.m., and the event is scheduled to conclude after the Chiefs make their first pick of the third round (66th&nbsp;overall). Guests are welcome to stay at either Chicken N Pickle location for the remainder of Friday’s Draft coverage.Kansas City Ambassador Shawn Barber will lead the entertainment and stage program at Chicken N Pickle Overland Park, while Ambassador Danan Hughes will host at Chicken N Pickle North Kansas City. Chiefs to host exclusive multi-location season ticket member draft fest

The Southeast of Saline softball team turned heads once again on Monday, punching up against an NCKL foe and emerging with a sweep.

The Lady Trojans held on to defeat Clay Center in a 5-4 pitchers' duel to open the set, then exploded to win 14-3 in a mercy-rule shortened nightcap.

Game One: SE of Saline 5, Clay Center 4

Through the first four innings of this game, Karlee Zurfluh looked unhittable, helping her team take a 2-0 lead into the fifth.

That work would be quickly undone by Clay Center, who plated two runs in both the fifth and sixth, but a pair of SES runs would keep the score level going into a pivotal seventh inning.

Neither team would score in the seventh, and as the game went to extras, Zurfluh found her groove again, keeping the Lady Tigers off the board in the top of the eighth.

Southeast’s affinity for small ball paid dividends once again as Adyson Rohr laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score the game-winning walkoff run, bringing Emma Zurfluh home under a close attempt at the plate.

Karlee Zurfluh collects another well-deserved win, allowing no earned runs, walking just one, and striking out six.

Game one may have been tight, but the nightcap was anything but as the Lady Trojans answered a three-run top of the first with five of their own in the home half.

Clay Center ran out of steam after their initial charge, failing to push another run across the plate, and with two more Lady Trojan runs in the second and seven in the fourth, SES wrapped this game up in just five innings.

Reese Heinrich and Kimber Ogorzolka both closed out game two with three hits, and Emma Zurfluh was an RBI machine, driving in four in the win.

In the circle, Carlee Dye settled in, recording four strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs in the win.

With this sweep, SES improves to 10-2 while Clay Center drops to 2-12.

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“Welcome back, first of all everybody. It’s good to get things started. We’re jumping into this Phase I, which we’re doing virtually here. It’s a nonmandatory camp – voluntary in other words and the guys can pick and choose when they show up or not show up in other words. We’re not really going to get into who’s here and who’s not here and all that, that’s not how this one works. We’re sure grateful for some of the new additions that we’ve had to the roster with Kristian Fulton, Elijah Mitchell, Jaylon Moore, Gardner Minshew, Jerry Tillery – these are some of the newer guys and then we’ve resigned a bunch of guys so that’s been a plus. We’ve also lost a few guys, which we know – I know (General Manager) Brett (Veach) covered that with you with a couple questions about (Bears G Joe) Thuney and so on – (Saints S) Justin Reid and (Ravens WR DeAndre) Hopkins and all that so – (Texans WR) Justin Watson and (free agent QB Carson) Wentz and (Panthers DT Tershawn) Wharton so those are all good football players. In this day and age, it’s tough to keep everybody in a roster whole like that, but we should feel like we filled in the blanks with some good football players and that’s (the) same with the draft coming up this week. We look forward to getting that – getting into that. We have eight picks there, two second-round picks, a first day pick and so on as we go through there so it should be a good positive outcome once Brett gets done with that. I know his guys have worked their tail off getting ready for the draft and along with the coaches, which they have included but again, the coaches were a small part of the whole. My hat goes off to Brett and his staff for the job that they’ve done and all the prep time that they’ve put in and travel time. Other than that, I don’t have much to add, but I’ll open it up to questions here. Fire away.”

Q: What told you and the team that Jaylon Moore can be a starting left tackle?

REID:&nbsp;“We felt Jaylon (Moore) – well first of all, he was backing up a pretty good player (49ers LT Trent Williams) in San Francisco – arguably the best to ever play the game so I mean – and then when he got his opportunity, he took full advantage of it. We also remember him because he played next to (Mike) Caliendo for three years at Western Michigan there. I think we lead the league in players from Western Michigan now that we’ve added him but listen, he was a good football player there (and) when he had opportunities in San Francisco he was a good player there. We thought that he would be a nice addition to our offensive line as we continue to work that.”

Q: How are Rashee Rice and Jared Wiley doing in their rehab?

REID:&nbsp;“I can’t necessarily give you the – they’re (Rashee Rice and Jared Wiley) doing well. That’s taking place right now, but I can’t tell you when they’ll be back exactly here. Both of (them) are busting their tail – they’re running, which is good, and we’ll just see how it goes going forward here. We don’t have them here on the field right now with us, so we have to see the football part of it as we go.”

Q: On Kingsley Suamataia playing guard.

REID:&nbsp;“When we brought him (Kingsley Suamataia) in, we knew he had that flexibility. We just felt that way athletically and he is a very good athlete. He can run and he can pass block – do all the things that he needs to do. I thought he felt more comfortable in there. As a young guy, sometimes you see guys that start in there and then they work their way back outside. So, we stuck him in there and he did a nice job against Denver, that was one of the bright spots in a game that didn’t have many so that was a – I thought he did a good job – and that’s where we’ll put him. He’ll start in there with Mike Caliendo, so they’ll compete for that spot.”

Q:&nbsp;What’s your mentality coming out of this last Super Bowl and does anything change in your mind as you’re preparing for the next go-round?

REID:&nbsp;“I’m excited to get going again. It’s been fun to go back in and dig in on the season and either come up with new things and/or correct the things that we still like and are bringing back. I think it’s a great time for the players. It’s slowed down to where they get to see all the videos, the cutups of work that the coaches have put in to do these evaluations and to teach and to learn from the player’s standpoint. It’s also good communication so they can share ideas, players and coaches – they can ask questions and feel free about that and there’s no rush to do so. At the same time, they get their lifting in and running in that they need to build that base to get them through the season.”

Q:&nbsp;Is that different than it would be a year ago?

REID:&nbsp;“I’d tell you it’s similar, yeah.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you recall from Andy Lock’s playing days and what were your thoughts about him over the years?

REID:&nbsp;“Well, it’s a sad deal but what a great guy. He’s (former Mizzou football player Andy Lock) left a nice legacy for us all here too that we can cherish if we decide to go out to dinner. You know, the true flavor of offensive linemen. He has these beautiful restaurants in town here that are great, but what a great guy, great human being. I had a chance to go out to a tribute to him in Lee’s Summit there with a bunch of the ex-players from Missouri and Jay Green, with being his roommate for all those years and best friends with him, went to the culinary school there and hotel management school at the University of Missouri which is a tough school to get into. Both of them (Andy Lock and Jay Green) had graduated from there and have had real productive and positive jobs and put themselves in great financial positions. My heart goes out to the family for sure and Drew (Lock) who we all know as a player in the National Football League, I know he had a great relationship with his dad too, so my heart goes out to him.”

Q:&nbsp;On still doing meetings virtually.

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, Matt (Derrick). I think it’s one of the positives that came out of that probably for a lot of professions. I mean, here we’re doing this right now virtually and that didn’t happen before either. You can use it as a teaching tool and that’s something that the players have perfected, we’ve perfected and feel comfortable doing, but no I wouldn’t have seen that before the whole COVID year showed up.”

Q:&nbsp;Is there a benefit to having a backup like Gardner Minshew in that quarterback room considering all the experience he has and that he’s younger than Patrick Mahomes?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, he (Gardner Minshew) sure has. He’s a good football player. I think it’ll be a good relationship between the two of them (Gardner Minshew and Patrick Mahomes). They both know of each other and respect each other. I think they look forward to working together. They can speak more on that when you have a chance to talk to them. Gardner’s a humble kid with a great personality, loves to play the game and all of those are the same things that Pat (Patrick Mahomes) has too so it should be a good working relationship there.”

Q: Ahead of Phase I, what kind of guidance do you give Patrick Mahomes? Is there a script that you provide for him and the workouts that he runs?

REID: “You know what Sam (McDowell), we don’t do that. First of all, it’s not legal to do that by the NFL rules. Really, to be honest with you, Pat (Patrick Mahomes) doesn’t need that. Especially right now with the experience he has and the experience that the receivers have, that have joined. Last year, when we had some new faces or some young guys in there, it was a little different, he had to really prep for that. This year, he can kind of go out and work on the things that he knows the guys need worked on and the routes and that. I think it’s even a better situation this year than it was last (year).”

Q: What do you think signing Kristian Fulton can do for the team and Trent McDuffie?

REID: “It should give you a little bit of flexibility, but we’ve got some good corners on the roster, but I think his addition gives you more flexibility, I think is the best thing, you kind of tagged that right there. Trent (McDuffie) is such a good inside player that – and (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) Spags likes using him in there and has a nice package in there with him when he’s used him in there. I think you hit it right on the head, I think it just gives you more flexibility to do that.”

Q: What have you learned about yourself and coaching staff about doing Phase I virtually?

REID: “I don’t know about that Todd (Leabo). We try to – myself included – try to be teachers, be the best teachers we possibly can. It tests you a little bit when you’re doing it virtually. You’re not seeing necessarily the reaction of the player there as you have the big screen on and you’re going through the plays. You’re not playing off the crowd I guess you’d say, you’re playing off of – and keeping these guys occupied by the ability that you have to teach and to help them become even better than they already are. I mean they’re one out of the 32 guys in the whole world that are doing what they do. This gives them an enhancement to be even greater than they already are.”

Q: Do you feel comfortable with what you have on the roster? Is what you need lining up with the draft board? What’s your comfort level with the way things look a couple days out from the draft?

REID: “When you’re sitting here like we have the last couple of years, and fortunate to be sitting in that position because of the wins that have taken place, you really – you have to discipline yourself to take the best player. With that, you have to evaluate every position and you have to put all this time in. (General Manager) Brett (Veach) has done a great job with that, I think he’s very comfortable with it right now if we had to do it today. He and his guys have been working overtime and making sure they have all the bases covered and we’ll come out of it with a good football player.”

The two student-athletes were selected for their performances from April 14-20 by a vote of conference sports information directors. All KCAC Player of the Week honors are presented by&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/faa144cb-3c65-43f6-b34e-f110e80e3a3d?elinkdata=25343" target="_blank">Equity Bank</a>.

On Friday, she was phenomenal in a complete game win over Evangel, scattering five hits and just one unearned run with six strikeouts as KWU won 2-1 over the Valor.

Kansas Wesleyan Sweeps KCAC Softball Weekly Honors

BOSTON (AP) — Sharon Lokedi broke the Boston Marathon course record, and fellow Kenyan John Korir joined his brother as a race champion on Monday as the city celebrated the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War.

Lokedi, who ran for the University of Kansas from 2015-2019, outran two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri over the final mile a year after losing a sprint down Boylston Street to her in one of the closest finishes in race history. Lokedi finished in an unofficial 2 hours, 17 minutes, 22 seconds — 19 seconds ahead of Obiri and more than 2 1/2 minutes faster than the previous Boston best.

Six months after winning Chicago, Korir finished in 2:04:45 — the second-fastest winning time in race history as the runners took advantage of perfect marathon weather to conquer the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston’s Copley Square.

After crossing the line, Korir was greeted by his older brother, 2012 Boston winner Wesley Korir. Although the race has been won by a pair of unrelated John Kelleys and two different Robert Cheruiyots, the Korirs are the first brothers — or relatives of any kind — to win the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon.

Conner Mantz of Provo, Utah, finished fourth after losing a three-way sprint to the finish with Alphonce Felix Simbu of Tanzania and Cybrian Kotut of Kenya. Simbu was second and Kotut was third.

Korir ran without his bib showing, pulling it out of his running tights as he sprinted down Boylston Street.

Reenactors on horseback, accompanied by a fife and drum playing “Yankee Doodle,” helped start the festivities and add a bit of levity when Paul Revere’s horse was spooked by the finish line decal on the street and stopped. The actor portraying the colonial silversmith and patriot had to hop off and walk the last few steps himself as the small early crowd laughed and clapped.

After reading a proclamation, Revere gently tugged the horse the rest of the way before riding off to more ceremonies commemorating the midnight ride on April 19, 1775, that warned the colonists in Lexington and Concord that the British were on the march.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland had no such trouble completing the course, zooming into Copley Square in 1:21:34 for his eighth Boston wheelchair title. He beat two-time winner Daniel Romanchuk by more than four minutes in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boston-marathon-wheelchair-bob-hall-0426d27b488fbb668c04523a391d655d">50th anniversary of Bob Hall’s pioneering push</a>&nbsp;to add a wheelchair division to the race.

“It means a lot to win this year, 50 years of wheelchairs in Boston,” Hug said. “For me, it will take some time to realize what it means, eight times wins. It’s such an incredible number.”

Susannah Scaroni of the United States won the women’s wheelchair race for the second time, finishing in 1:35:20. Her victory guaranteed that the “Star-Spangled Banner” would play on Boylston Street in Copley Square on Patriots’ Day, the state holiday that commemorates the first shots of the Revolutionary War&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lexington-concord-battles-250-independence-history-debate-031df77dc1cfa5cf669b6694dfe509ee">250 years ago Saturday</a>.

Former KU star wins Boston Marathon in record time

DETROIT (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 Sunday to stop a six-game losing streak.

With the score 3-3, Jonathan India's groundout off Tyler Holton (1-2) advanced automatic runner Drew Waters to third, and Witt hit a 280-foot fly to left. Waters scored headfirst ahead of Riley Greene's throw.

Carlos Estévez (1-0) intentionally walked Greene to put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half, then retired Dillon Dingler on a popup.

Kansas City went 2-8 on its trip and is 9-14. Detroit had won three straight.

Detroit left fielder Kerry Carpenter left the game after the eighth inning because of right hamstring soreness.

Tigers ace Tarik Skubal allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, while Royals starter Michael Wacha gave up two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 inning

Hunter Pasquantino and Drew Waters built a 2-0 lead with RBI singles in the second, but consecutive, two-out run-scoring singles by Carpenter and Zach McKinstry tied the score inthe fifth.

McKinstry's RBI single in the seventh ended Daniel Lynch IV's scoreless streak at 31 innings.

Mark Canha tied the score in the eighth with an RBI single after Witt reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Javier Báez.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Salvador Perez scooped Greene's grounded and start an inning-ending 3-2-3 double play.

Skubal is 11-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 18 starts at home since the start of the 2024 season.

Royals: LHP Kris Bubic (2-1, 1.88) starts Tuesday homestand opener against Rockies RHP Ryan Feltner (0-1, 4.82).

Tigers: RHP Keider Montero (0-1, 9.00) starts Monday's series opener against Padres RHP Randy Vasquez (1-1. 1.74).
