Donovan's 68 was the only sub-par round at the tournament on the challenging Salina Country Club course. She enjoyed a five-shot victory in the individual standings and helped KWU to a second place finish. Kansas Travels to Tempe to Take on Big 12 Newcomer Arizona State

Dikembe Mutombo, a Basketball Hall of Famer who was one of the best defensive players in NBA history and a longtime global ambassador for the game, died Monday from brain cancer, the league announced. He was 58.

His family revealed two years ago that he was undergoing treatment in Atlanta for a brain tumor. The NBA said he died surrounded by his family.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.”

Mutombo was distinctive in so many ways —&nbsp;<a href="https://youtu.be/g7SdhtxuJYA?feature=shared" target="_blank">the playful finger wag at opponents</a>&nbsp;after blocking their shots, his height, his deep and gravelly voice, his massive smile. Players of this generation were always drawn to him and Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, who was born in Cameroon, looked to Mutombo as an inspiration.

“It’s a sad day, especially for us Africans, and really the whole world,” Embiid said Monday. “Other than what he’s accomplished on the basketball court, I think he was even better off the court. He’s one of the guys that I look up to, as far as having an impact, not just on the court, but off the court. He’s done a lot of great things. He did a lot of great things for a lot of people. He was a role model of mine. It is a sad day.”

Mutombo spent 18 seasons in the NBA, playing for Denver, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, New York and the then-New Jersey Nets. The 7-foot-2 center out of Georgetown was an eight-time All-Star, three-time All-NBA selection and went into the Hall of Fame in 2015 after averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for his career.

“It’s really hard to believe,” Toronto President Masai Ujiri said Monday, pausing several times because he was overcome with emotion shortly after hearing the news of Mutombo’s death. “It’s hard for us to be without that guy. You have no idea what Dikembe Mutombo meant to me. ... That guy, he made us who we are. That guy is a giant, an incredible person.”

Mutombo last played during the 2008-09 season, devoting his time after retirement to charitable and humanitarian causes. He spoke nine languages and founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in 1997, concentrating on improving health, education and quality of life for the people in the Congo.

Mutombo served on the boards of many organizations, including Special Olympics International, the CDC Foundation and the National Board for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

“There was nobody more qualified than Dikembe to serve as the NBA’s first Global Ambassador,” Silver said. “He was a humanitarian at his core. He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the continent of Africa.”

Mutombo is one of three players to win the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year four times. The others: reigning DPOY winner Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Hall of Famer Ben Wallace.

Philadelphia 76ers president Daryl Morey — who was with Mutombo for many seasons in Houston — was informed of his friend’s death during the team’s media day on Monday. Tears welled in Morey’s eyes as he processed the news.

A year ago, the Royals matched a franchise record with 106 losses. Now, they are headed to the postseason for the first time since winning the 2015 World Series.

Led by second-year manager Matt Quatraro, Kansas City is the first team in baseball history to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-kansas-city-major-league-baseball-playoffs-faf7e1aee9a4322eb969f93e503be055">make the playoffs after posting such a dismal mark</a>&nbsp;the previous season.

The Royals postseason journey begins in Baltimore as KC takes on the Orioles this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday if needed.

The Royals also defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Sunday in what was supposed to be the regular season finale for both teams.&nbsp;

Kansas City has won six straight over the Chargers. It also has 11 straight road victories victories its AFC West rival, the longest active winning streak by a visiting squad and tied for third all-time.

The Chargers (2-2) scored 10 points off a pair of Chiefs turnovers — a fumble by Carson Steele and Mahomes' fifth interception of the season — but struggled after that.

Kansas City got the opening kickoff and was at the Chargers 30 when Elijah Molden recovered Steele’s fumble at the LA 27 after Tuli Tuipulotu jarred the ball loose while tackling the rookie running back.

The Chargers converted Steele's second fumble of the season into a touchdown.

Herbert completed all four of his passes on Los Angeles' opening 10-play drive, including a 7-yard strike to Ladd McConkey in the back of the end zone. Herbert took a big hit from Chiefs defensive end Malik Herring while throwing, but he put the ball in a tight spot as safety Bryan Cook had his back turned.

Cameron Dicker's 50 yard field goal extended the Chargers' lead to 10-0. The drive started on the KC 20 after a bizarre play in which Kristian Fulton intercepted Mahomes' pass intended for Kelce and returned it 29 yards up the right sideline.

Kansas City's Rashee Rice punched the ball loose behind Fulton for a fumble, which Chiefs center Creed Humphrey recovered. But the call was reversed when a video review showed Rice was out of bounds when he forced the fumble.

Rice was injured when Mahomes hit his legs while trying to tackle Fulton. Rice was carted to the locker room.

Kansas City had a pair of turnovers and went three-and-out on four of its first five possessions before getting on track late in the second quarter.

The Chiefs took over at their 46 after forcing the Chargers to go three-and-out, and Mahomes immediately connected with Worthy for the deep touchdown. Worthy, the speedy rookie wide receiver who was the 28th overall pick in April's draft, blew past Fulton on a go route and caught it 3 yards deep in the end zone on a pass from Mahomes that went 64 yards in the air.

Harrison Butker's 37-yard field goal tied it at 10-all midway through the third quarter.

The Chargers had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth when they drove to the Kansas City 3, but Herbert threw incomplete on fourth-and-1.

Perine's decisive touchdown capped a five-play, 60-yard drive.

Kelce, in his 12th season, has 922 receptions. Gonzalez had 916 catches in 12 seasons with Kansas City, and the Hall of Famer finished his career with 1,325.

ATLANTA (AP) — Charlie Morton gave up a three-run homer to Michael Massey in the first inning and the Atlanta Braves squandered a chance to clinch a postseason berth, losing to the playoff-bound Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Sunday in what was supposed to be the final day of the regular season.

Atlanta hosts doubleheader Monday against the New York Mets, a makeup of two games that were rained out last week between the NL East rivals as Hurricane Helene slashed through the southeastern U.S.

Atlanta and the Mets are both 88-72, and Arizona finished 89-73. If either team sweeps Monday, the Diamondbacks reach the playoffs. But if the doubleheader is split, the Mets and Braves advance and Arizona is out because the Braves and Mets hold the tiebreaker edge over the Diamondbacks.

Before recording an out, Morton gave up a leadoff double to Tommy Pham, a single to Bobby Witt Jr. and Massey's homer.

Morton (8-10) surrendered four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.

The 40-year-old was drafted by the Braves in 2002 and made his MLB debut for Atlanta in 2008 He made what could be his final major league start and was given an small ovation after manager Brian Snitker pulled him in the top of the fifth inning.

Atlanta had ample opportunity to score more than two runs but went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Alec Marsh (9-9) allowed one earned run over five innings for the win. Kris Bubic pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Witt went 1 for 4 to earn the AL batting title after finishing with a .332 average.

Royals: The No. 6 seed in the American League will face third-seeded Houston in the Wild Card Series that begins on Tuesday.

⚾ Royals edge the Brave; Witt earns AL batting title 

Having played linebacker at Kansas Wesleyan then serving as a defensive coach for five seasons before becoming the head man <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/71dfa1d4-2765-4f82-8f63-3041267a2167?elinkdata=12841">Matt Myers</a> has a deep appreciation for the guys who are tasked with stopped the opposing team from scoring.

What he witnessed Saturday night in the Coyotes' 21-6 Kansas Conference victory over Bethel at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex was as satisfying as it gets.

KWU's swarming defense smothered the Threshers limiting them to two field goals and 216 total yards on 62 plays - an average of 3.5 yards per play. Bethel had just 49 yards rushing on 34 attempts - 1.4 per play. There also were three sacks, two by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/b860d331-218e-4687-8850-b891100cf700?elinkdata=12841">Josh King-Bradley</a>, and interceptions by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/7fa2a6e2-f030-4dd1-a0d8-5b517757bd30?elinkdata=12841">James Preston</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/58d83a9e-0cdc-4b30-9d49-97ec03b1f647?elinkdata=12841">Daren Hawkins</a>.

Most impressive, though, was the whopping 17 tackles for loss that pushed Bethel back 70 yards - King-Bradley with 3.5.

"That's incredible," Myers said on his postgame radio show. "Suffocating the run was really good to see. The difference tonight was we started penetrating and getting tackles for loss. That's a big deal when you're getting them in a second-and-long situations and making them play behind the (first down) sticks. We hadn't necessarily done that in the first three weeks."

KWU improved to 2-3 on the season while handing Bethel its first loss (4-1).

Bethel was forced to throw to gain yardage and quarterback D.J. Ciers was 18 of 26 for 167 yards and an interception.

"He completed 69 percent of his passing ... but that's okay. That doesn't bother me," Myers said. "Points bother me. Making sure (the defense) is getting off the field is what we want and forcing them to kick field goals is fine.

"The point all week going into tonight was making sure we're getting penetration in the backfield and forcing guys to make cuts in the backfield and getting them on the ground before they can get back to the line of scrimmage."

Defense dominates as Coyotes beat Bethel 21-6

Kansas Wesleyan's two goals in the first half were enough as the Coyotes picked up a 2-1 win over the Ottawa University Braves on Saturday at JRI Hospitality Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University.

The Coyotes struck quickly to get on the board. KWU had a corner kick in the fifth minute by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ac40c003-7dc7-4cea-bcfc-aba32f3632ca?elinkdata=12818">Seth Flores</a> as he played the ball out to <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/9fd7b820-682b-4d18-9dc0-83ea4a8013da?elinkdata=12818">Gerardo Garcia</a> who launched a hard hit ball through the box and in to put the Coyotes up.

Wesleyan's second goal came in the 19th minute as <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/7ffdc2bf-0e48-4527-ac16-509a1d4f2cd9?elinkdata=12818">Jakob Treitl</a> scored when <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/70b5ec57-386d-4047-b1b4-5e19a3464862?elinkdata=12818">Kenneth Luanglatbandith</a> sent a long ball down the right sideline and Treitl went to goal and got the keeper to come out and chipped it over his head and in.

Ottawa nearly got on the board in the 25th minute, but Bence Molnar's shot was stopped by keeper <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/8db24a35-d814-44b8-813e-9a833a549255?elinkdata=12818">Santiago Pagnutti</a>.

Ottawa was on the board in the 63rd minute as Arnold Signell scored corralling and scoring a loose ball that the Coyotes could not clear out of the box.

Wesleyan's defense would settle in and hold the Braves off the board the rest of the way and only two more shots in the final 27 minutes.

Ottawa narrowly outshot the Coyotes 11-10 in the match. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/46754767-c7ab-4d5d-9599-71eede88c205?elinkdata=12818">Kamille Kum</a> had three shots to lead the Coyotes. Pagnutti had three saves in goal.

Coyote MSOC makes two first half goals stand in 2-1 win over Ottawa

Kansas Wesleyan Women's Soccer withstood a late charge from the Ottawa Braves to come away with a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon at JRI Hospitality Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University.

The win kept the Coyotes unbeaten in the KCAC at 4-0 and was the fourth straight win for Wesleyan, as KWU improved to .500 on the season at 4-4-1 overall.

The Coyotes were on the board first in the 14th minute, as <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/13868b78-1b1f-4788-ad61-29ceafcafd9c?elinkdata=12795">Grace Conner</a> scored from about 10 yards out gaining possession after the ball bounced around among several Ottawa defenders and her shot went just inside the near post.

Almost a minute later, Conner nearly had another goal as her shot to the far post hit the post and bounced away.

The Coyotes carried the 1-0 lead into the half.

Ottawa got an equalizing goal in the 57th minute, as goalkeeper turned forward Alondra Carbajal-Pettry scored on a loose ball in the Coyote box in the 57th minute.

ATLANTA (AP) — Travis d’Arnaud hit a walk-off homer in the ninth inning and the Atlanta Braves kept up their postseason push with a 2-1 win over the playoff-bound Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Reynaldo López came off the injured list to throw six strong innings for the Braves, who moved one game ahead of the New York Mets and a half-game in front of Arizona for the final two wild-card spots in the National League. The Mets lost 6-0 at Milwaukee and the Diamondbacks were hosting San Diego.

D'Arnaud ended it with one swing in the ninth, launching a 2-0 pitch from Sam Long (3-3) over the center-field wall for his 15th homer this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Hoover threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns, JP Richardson returned a second-half punt 89 yards for the go-ahead score, and TCU pulled away to beat Kansas 38-27 on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jack Bech had 131 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and Cam Cook had a touchdown run, helping the Horned Frogs (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) improve to 11-1 against the Jayhawks (1-4, 0-2) since they became conference rivals 12 years ago.

“We just kept fighting. There was no panic,” said TCU coach Sonny Dykes, whose defense had just allowed a 101 combined points in back-to-back losses to UCF and SMU. “Guys stepped up and they were tougher and grittier and more determined to win, and sometimes teams that lose two games in a row don't respond that way.”

The Horned Frogs shut down Jalon Daniels, who was 15 of 34 for 179 yards with a touchdown and a pick. Daniel Hishaw and Devin Neal had TD runs for Kansas, but they were unable to carry the load alone.

The Jayhawks, who have lost four straight, are playing their home Big 12 games at the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. And their current losing streak may have been a big reason why there were plenty of empty red and yellow seats.

“Extremely down, but why wouldn’t you be? We put all this time in and we’re not making it happen,” Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold said. “It starts with the head coach. I’m not getting it done and I need to be better.”

Leipold spent much of the second half livid with referee Michael VanderVelde. The officials first overturned a long third-down catch by the Jayhawks after discussing the play, and the on-field call stood upon video review. A few minutes later, Hoover was hit from behind and fumbled, but VanderVelde overturned that call and gave TCU the ball back.

“Did it drastically change the momentum of the game? Yes. Did we still need to make plays and didn’t? Yes,” said Leipold, who spent several minutes blasting the officiating. “They can fine me today. I don’t really care.”

Kansas was fortunate to be within 21-17 at halftime thanks to a couple of TCU turnovers — a fumble on the opening series that Daniels turned into a touchdown pass to Luke Grimm, and a pick by O.J. Burroughs that turned into a field goal.

Otherwise, the Jayhawks were unable to slow down Hoover and the Horned Frogs.

The prolific sophomore was 21 of 26 for 227 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. His favorite target was Bech, who had seven catches by that point, including a 35-yard TD reception and a 7-yard scoring strike with 12 seconds to go.

The teams swapped scores to start the second half — Hishaw had a TD run for Kansas, Richardson answered with his punt return to retake the lead for TCU. But ultimately, mistakes and missed opportunities doomed the Jayhawks once again.

Their biggest missed chance came early in the fourth quarter, when the Horned Frogs were clinging to a 28-24 lead. Kansas had to settle for a field goal, rather than take the lead with a touchdown. Two plays later, Hoover hit Eric McAlister near the sideline, and he slipped tackles by Burroughs and Mello Dotson on his way to a 59-yard touchdown reception.

“We had some adversity today and fought through,” Hoover said. “I'm really proud of our guys.”

Kyle Lemmermann atoned for an earlier miss with a 29-yard field goal with 3:02 remaining to put the game away.

“I can't say enough about our players,” Dykes said. “I'm proud of them for how hard they worked all week. They never blinked, just with all the stuff last week, having my back personally. I really appreciate it.”

TCU overcame three turnovers thanks largely to a defense that was able to clamp down on the Kansas passing game. "Very seldom do you win a football game when you turn the ball over three times," Dykes said. “We were very fortunate that way.”

Kansas only had six penalties for 50 yards, but they came at especially bad times. And when open players are dropping passes and the defense is blowing assignments, the accumulated mistakes became too much to overcome.

TCU returns to face Houston on Friday night.

Kansas heads to Arizona State on Saturday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team put the scoreboard to work in a 99-0 romp over Ellsworth Community College on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

The 99 points are the most-ever scored in a Blue Dragon single-game and tie for the most-ever points scored in a NJCAA Division I football game.

Hutchinson (4-0) scored on its first play from scrimmage, a 58-yard scamper by quarterback Samari Collier. The Collier touchdown was the first of eight rushing touchdowns in the win.&nbsp;

Waymond Jordan Jr. finished the game with nine carries for 171 yards and four scores, Julius Bolden eight carries for 80 yards and a score, and Titus Petteway four carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

Ben Prosper hauled in two passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns, while Dwayne Moorehead had two catches for 15 yards, Tre Brown with one catch for 15 yards and a score, and Kordell Gouldsby one catch for 19 yards.

The Blue Dragons scored 24 points in the first quarter, 35 in the second, 14 in the third and 26 in the final period.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons ran 57 plays for 591 yards, 40 of the 57 plays were rushing attempts, which the Blue Dragons gashed the Panthers defense for 469 yards.

The Hutchinson defense also joined in on the scoring, recording two interception returns for a touchdown, one by David Jester and the other from MJ Graham. HutchCC held Ellsworth to 100 yards on 83 plays.

The Blue Dragons defense matched its season-total of seven quarterback sacks, while recording 17 tackles for loss in the win.&nbsp;

HutchCC will host Dodge City (3-2) on Saturday at Gowans Stadium with kickoff scheduled for noon.

Johnson passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 60 yards and two scores.

DJ Giddens ran for 187 yards and a touchdown and had a catch for 22 yards for Kansas State for the Wildcats (4-1, 1-1 Big 12), who fell behind early before scoring 35 straight points to take control.

Alan Bowman passed for 361 yards and a touchdown for Oklahoma State (3-2, 0-2), but he threw two costly interceptions and lost a fumble. De'Zhaun Stribling had seven catches for 157 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown catch from Bowman on a flea flicker.

Giddens' 66-yard touchdown run on K-State's second offensive play of the second half gave Kansas State a 28-13 lead. Johnson then found Will Anciaux on a 2-yard pass for his first career touchdown and a 35-13 advantage. Johnson iced the game with a nifty 13-yard scramble for a touchdown.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys, one of the preseason favorites to play in the Big 12 Championship Game, will have an uphill battle to get there. The Cowboys got running back Ollie Gordon II going early with 72 yards rushing in the first quarter, but he finished with 76.

Kansas State: The Wildcats dominated on offense, gaining 559 yards. On defense, they still need to limit the big plays in the passing game — they allowed five different Oklahoma State players to gain at least 10 yards on a reception and gave up 364 yards in the air.

The Southeast of Saline defense set the tone early Friday in their 40-6 victory over the Kingman Eagles to start District play, tallying an interception, a safety, and 11 tackles for loss.&nbsp;

SES held a powerful Kingman offense to just 106 total yards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“[Kingman] does a good job with their quarterback power run game, and I felt like our kids did a darn good job with it,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “I thought we played a physical football game, and I think we’ve been good about that, but in the open field, we were more physical tonight.”

Offensively, Southeast amassed 275 yards of total offense with 167 rushing and 108 yards passing.&nbsp;&nbsp;
