Ruth’s life began on October 28, 1924, on Magazine Mountain at her parents’ home near Paris, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of George M. and Sarah “Sally” (Wisdom) Swilling. 

 When she was about five years old, the family moved to Blackburn, Oklahoma, by way of a covered wagon.  There she attended school and met her future husband Harold Blackburn.  They were married in January of 1941.  To this union, three children were born. 

 They lived in the Kansas City area before moving to Davenport, OK. 

 Ruth moved to Raymond, Kansas in 1943 after Harold joined the Army.  Ruth lived with her in-laws, Thomas Jefferson and wife Willie Mae Blackburn until Harold returned in October of 1945 from serving in Europe in WWII.  They lived in Raymond until 1953 with their three children before moving to Ellinwood, KS. 

 Ruth lost her husband Harold in a truck wreck in July of 1955. 

 Ruth was a good cook and loved to fish.  She owned the fishing lure company Tyna Mites in the 1950s and traveled all over the United States to demonstrate the lures. She was known for winning quite a few fishing tournaments around the country.  Her love of fishing is why Ruth moved to Canton Lake in Oklahoma and there she married Leo Cotham in June of 1990. 

 When he became ill, they moved to Norman, OK until he passed away in June of 1995.  

Ruth moved to Marion, KS in April of 1997 and remained in Marion for 11 years before moving back to Norman in 2008.  She moved back to Marion in August of 2016 when her health declined to be close to her daughter.  

She is survived by her children Geraldine Box of Norman, OK, Ruth C. (Ronald) Herbel of Marion, and Harold (Ruby) Blackburn of Sallisaw, OK; grandchildren Angela Hearrell, Loretta Wilson, Darlene Ponstein, Pamela Harris, Bradley (Sue) Herbel, Darryl (Angie) Herbel, Kristy Herbel, Johnny Blackburn, Marnie ( Charles) Clayton and Jeff Blackburn; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. 

 Ruth passed away on May 9, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Marion. 

 She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold Blackburn and Leo Cotham, three brothers George M. “Jack”, James T and Kenneth Swilling, and two sisters Lella Cotham and Johnny Thelma Carte.  

Graveside memorial services will be held at a later date at Hilltop Cemetery in Raymond, KS.  Yazel-Megli Funeral Home is serving the family. Dewayne “Vance” Brandom, 71, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Saturday, May 9, 2020. He was born on October 21, 1948 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Charles Willard and Anna Bell (Tenbrook) Brandom. He is preceded in death by his sister, Beverlea Ann Brandom, and his parents. He was the beloved brother of Garlan (Lisa) Brandom of Little Rock, Arkansas. He married his one and only, Leslie “Jan” (Trout) Brandom, on June 11, 1983. Together they had two perfect daughters, Erin Elizabeth (Matthew) Groves of Whitewater and Kelli Suzanne Brandom of Wichita. He was adored by his five grandchildren, Ryann, Sadie, Sophie, John, and Jack and, oh, did he love them. He had a love for nature, especially the San Juan Mountains in Colorado and all of the National Parks. He was selfless and wonderful, fearless and hilarious, loving and kind. He was everything a husband, father, and grandfather should be.

L. Dean Hocker was born January 10, 1932 in Abilene the son of Ed and Katy (Muller) Hocker. Dean grew up in Abilene graduating from Abilene High School. Following high school, Dean served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.

Dean worked for Steffek Construction, Chet Gay Construction and Harbin Construction for many years before owning his own construction company Hocker Construction.

He was the unofficial City Inspector of Abilene for many years, and loved his coffee friends, walking through Paul Mueller’s God’s Garden and the rose garden at Eisenhower Park. He also delivered Meals on Wheels in Abilene.

He married Evalou Leadford and they had 2 children. They later divorced and he married Shirley Smith. They had one child and Shirley passed away in May of 1982. He then had a longtime special friend Ada Wood. Ada passed away in October of 2013.

Dean is survived by his sons Chris Hocker of Abilene, Shane and his wife Darcy Hocker of Abilene, step sons Steve Atkinson of Austin, Texas, Rodney French of Topeka, Kansas, Rick Black of Abilene; stepdaughter Jan Eisenhauer of Greenville, Missouri; sister Dorothy Bereznak of Abilene; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, daughter Patty Price, brothers Harold and Leo Hocker, sister Helen Markley, and his parents.

Because COVID-19, funeral services will be private on Thursday with military honors provided by the Fr. Riley Honor Guard. Friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home. H. Neal Gish, 83, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Sunday, May 10th, 2020. He was born on March 28, 1937, in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Hallie Homer and Irene Marie (Owen) Gish.

He delivered papers and was a golf caddie in Colorado Springs when he was young and eventually moved to Brookville, Kansas where he met his wife Lois Marie Brozek while attending Brookville High School. While attending school, he worked at the CK Ranch, The Brookville Hotel and for area farmers. Neal didn’t mind hard work, he loved playing baseball (catcher) for many years and had the crooked fingers (from being broken) to show for it, years later. Neal loved bicycle riding and rode Across Kansas and many miles on bike trails near Lawrence, Kansas while living there.

Neal worked for Wilson &amp; Co. Eng. And retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Federal Office Building in Kansas City, Missouri. Lois and Neal retired in 2002 and they moved back to Salina to be closer to family. Neal was a member of the Masonic Lodge #60 of Salina, Kansas for over 40 years.

Neal lost the love of his life Lois on February 7th of this year and never recovered from that loss.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Fred Toler and sister-in-law, Sui Gish.

Survivors include his daughters, Julie Bailey (Pete) of Salina, Lori Lebel (Joe) of Pennsylvania, and Sheri King (Kevin) of Salina; grandchildren, Chad Bailey (Francheska, David Bailey (Linnea) all of Salina, Jeremy Lebel, Kema Schultz (Derek) all of Pennsylvania, Carly Minnis (Jeff) of Maine, Jesse King (Mattie) of Manhattan; and Shane King of Plains, Montana; great grandchildren, Clayton and Micah Bailey, Keiradyn and Nash Bailey, all of Salina, Adalee Grason, Ashland Schultz, and Austin Lebel of Pennsylvania, Benji Minnis of Maine, Rylan and Roxanne King of Salina; beloved pet, Kipper; brothers, Elwood Gish, of Washington, Gary Gish of Connecticut, Karen Koelling (Art) and Gene Toler, all of Salina; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation was chosen, there will be no visitation.

Graveside services will be held at 10 am, Thursday, May 14th at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, Kansas with Pastor Matt Parnell officiating.

August M. “Augie” Bingham, 81, of Salina, passed away Friday, May 8, 2020. He was born October 17, 1938, in Bear Creek, WI to Charles and Dorcas Bingham. He served in the army during the Vietnam War with the 82nd Airborne. August retired from the maintenance department at Heart of America.

He is survived his wife, Carol, of the home; children, Cindy Cole, Tracey Koepplin, August Bingham Jr., and Michael Bingham; grandchildren, Kye, Tim, Steven, Jennifer, Dustin, Ethan, Cassandra, Cady and Angela; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved dearly by his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Crystal; three sisters; five brothers.

Cremation was chosen and no services are planned at this time.

TOPEKA-- Letta was born Nov. 6, 1944, in Salina to Ralph and Velma (Hardisty) Ditto. She died May 6 at the Alma Manor Nursing Center, Alma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and twin sister, Roberta, who died at birth. Letta grew up in Bennington and lived in Salina and Topeka.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Kelley, who she married Aug. 20, 2007, her sons, Phil (Lynda) Divelbess, Grand Junction, Colo., Mike (Jonnie) Divelbess, Marquette, and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, her sisters, Karen (Tom) Miller, Cape Coral, Fla., and Leanna (Mike) Mick, Salina, her brother, Ralph Ditto Jr., Everman, Texas, and eight nieces and nephews.

Paul Edward Slack

Glenn’s life began on February 21, 1935 in Hope, KS, the son of Charley and Maggie (Friedli) Bayes. He was a longtime resident of Herington and graduated from Herington High School, Class of 1953. He went to school with his future wife Beverly Lee and they were married at the Herington United Methodist Church on July 31, 1955.

Glenn’s career started at a young age at Scheufle Supply in Herington, KS, sweeping floors and working his way up to being a manager of the store until he retired. He would also help out at the family furniture business. Glenn liked to keep busy and among his many hobbies were coin collecting, bowling, bird hunting and playing various instruments which include the mandolin, violin and ukulele. &nbsp;He was an avid golfer for 50 years and when he could no longer go to the golf course, he went to the Hilltop Senior Center where he volunteered his time and enjoyed playing pool. He was devoted to attending all sports events of his children and grandchildren as well as also being a coach for little league and his church leagues.

Glenn and Beverly loved to dance and for 10 years enjoyed going to Lake Buchanan, TX in the winter. They were also honored as Senior Citizens of the Year in ­­­­2004 for their service to the community. They were devoted Kansas City Chiefs fans, Kansas City Royals fans and K -State fans.

Glenn attended Woodbine Methodist Church after many years as an extremely active member of the Herington United Methodist Church. He served as chairman of numerous committees until the church closed.

His loving family includes his wife, Beverly of Herington: sons, Kevin &nbsp;(Rose) Bayes of Herington; Kelly (Catherine) Bayes of Kansas City; Collin (Kimberly) Bayes of Derby; Grandchildren, Bertina Barrett, Aaron Bayes, Idana (Jerry)&nbsp; McNamara; Tim (Jennifer) Bayes; Rodney Bayes; Chardy (Tony) Magnett; and Bailey Bayes; Jake (Julia) Bayes, Austin (Nicole) Bayes, Brian (Jordan) Bayes; and 19 Great- Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

A service will be announced and held at a future date.

He went to school with his future wife Beverly Lee and they were married at the Herington United Methodist Church on July 31, 1955.Glenn’s career started at a young age at Scheufle Supply in Herington, KS, sweeping floors and working his way up to being a manager of the store until he retired. He would also help out at the family furniture business. Glenn liked to keep busy and among his many hobbies were coin collecting, bowling, bird hunting and playing various instruments which include the mandolin, violin and ukulele. &nbsp;He was an avid golfer for 50 years and when he could no longer go to the golf course, he went to the Hilltop Senior Center where he volunteered his time and enjoyed playing pool. He was devoted to attending all sports events of his children and grandchildren as well as also being a coach for little league and his church leagues.Glenn and Beverly loved to dance and for 10 years enjoyed going to Lake Buchanan, TX in the winter. They were also honored as Senior Citizens of the Year in ­­­­2004 for their service to the community. They were devoted Kansas City Chiefs fans, Kansas City Royals fans and K -State fans.Glenn attended Woodbine Methodist Church after many years as an extremely active member of the Herington United Methodist Church.  Jim served his country proudly in the United States Army stationed in Korea after World War II. 

 He was united in marriage to the former Earline Perkins on March 24, 1954 at Valley United Methodist Church in Marion. 

 After Jim returned home from the service, he went to work for the Kansas Department of Transportation, starting in 1949 and retiring in 1991 as a regional supervisor. 

He was a member of the Valley United Methodist Church.  

Jim loved cars and horses.  He was always ready for his next car and always looking.  Jim enjoyed watching the birds at his bird feeders and had a sweet tooth, especially for cookies. 

 He is survived by his children Jimmy M. (Rita) Magathan, Jr. of Emporia, Monte A. Magathan of Marion, Denise Magathan of Whitewater, Kerry W. (Kathleen) Magathan of Wichita, Linda Fowler and Janis Weiss; eight grandchildren; two great grandsons and his sister Shirley Nienstedt of Goddard.  

Jim passed away on May 5, 2020 at the Newton Medical Center. 

 He is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 64 years Earline, brother Loyd Magathan and sister Charity Reavis. 

 His family will gather with friends on Saturday at 11 a.m. for a graveside service at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Florence.  Military honors will be rendered at the graveside.  Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion is serving the family.

Lauren Oral Weeks, age 78, passed away unexpectedly, May 5, 2020, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; Lauren was an organ donor and passed on new life to an individual in need of a liver transplant.

Lauren was born October 31, 1941 in Council Grove, to Oral and Catherine (Henricks) Weeks.&nbsp; He grew up on a farm near Dwight, Kansas, graduating from Dwight High School.

Lauren served his country in the Army and spent time in Vietnam.&nbsp; He was an Auto Repairman, received a Marksman (Rifle M-14) badge and a Vietnam Service Medal.

He had served as the Commander of the American Legion Post 121.&nbsp; He worked as a mechanic, including many years for Trimmell Ford.&nbsp; After the closing of Trimmell Ford, Lauren worked for Wilson Sales until retiring in 2010.

Lauren leaves behind two children, Matt Weeks (Amber) and Laura Allen (fiancé Corey Viar); five grandchildren: Kelsey Bremer, Brianna Allen, Dedric Frese, Abigail Allen and Cole Weeks.&nbsp; He also leaves his longtime girlfriend, Pat Paul; three sisters, Ilene Bolinder (the late John, Anna Mae Williams (the late Jim, Mary Hayes (Bill); one brother, Raymond Weeks (Sherryl); in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed hunting, horseshoes, playing pitch with his friends and helping people. Lauren was very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved spending time with his family.&nbsp; He will be missed by many.&nbsp;

Mike’s life began on April 21, 1962, the son of Richard and Betty (Weber) Schnitker in Evansville, Indiana. He graduated as Valedictorian from Buhler High School Class of 1981. He continued his studies and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business at Bethany College in Lindsborg and also became a CPA. Mike was a Commodities Trader for Koch Industries in Wichita. With his work ethic and skill set it later took him to trade for a bank in New York City. After Mike became disabled, he continued to enjoy being a Day Trader. His hobbies included music, playing the piano and organ, and he loved movies.

Mike passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at the age of 58 years old. No more pain and suffering and he’s singing with the angels! His loving family includes his parents, Dick and Betty Schnitker of Wichita; brother, Terry Schnitker of Augusta, Kansas; two nieces, Makenzi and Mariah Schnitker also of Augusta.

Howard "Keith" Roark, 89, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 5th, 2020.

Keith was born in Gypsum, Kansas on May 2, 1931, a son of the late Bessie Myrtle (Davidson) and Frank Nathaniel Roark.

He proudly served in the United States Army.

On March 6th, 1955, Howard married Peggy Jo Mortimer in Gypsum, Kansas.

Keith and Peggy were longtime members of Central Community Church, Wichita, Kansas.

Keith retired as a Captain with the Wichita Fire Department in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Roark, of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Debra Smith, (Roger, of Flippin, Arkansas; two sons, Brad Roark, (Pam, of Powell, Ohio, Mike Roark, of Wichita, Kansas.

He is also survived by two grandchildren, Sean Roark (Mika, Stephanie Faires (Chris); eight great grandchildren, Mikayla Faires, Calli Roark, Colbi Roark, Madeline Tharp, Ethan Tharp, Eva Gutierrez, Myah Gutierrez, and Dominic Gutierrez; honorary daughters, Tina Probert and Kim Roark

He is preceded in death by sister, Irene Eberhart; brothers, Louis Roark, Carl Roark, J.D. Roark, Jess Roark, Ray Roark.

Visitation will be Friday, May 8, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Carlson - Geisendorf Funeral Home, Salina.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.&nbsp; They loved to travel and share trips with their grandchildren.&nbsp; She loved the lake, bowling, attending school activities, a good card game and family get togethers.

Paul Frank Shoemaker, the son of Frank W. and Laura E. (Hudson) Shoemaker was born on November 5, 1930, in Belleville. Paul went to be with Jesus on April 30, 2020, at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 25 days.

Paul grew up on his parent’s farm near Narka and graduated from Narka Rural High School in 1948. Following high school, Paul attended Bethany College before he was drafted into the United States Army on August 1, 1952, at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Paul served his country proudly, and was honorably discharged on August 1, 1954, with the rank of CPL Military Personnel Specialist, Ft. Riley, Kansas.

Paul then returned home to Narka and married Sylvia E. Kadavy on August 14, 1954, at the Munden Methodist Church. To this union of more than 65 years, two children were born, Lori and Lester.

Paul was active in his community as a member of the Belleville Central Christian Church. He enjoyed singing Gospel music, and was a member of the Republic County Men’s Barbershop Chorus and Area Messiah Chorus. He was an active member of the Belleville and Cuba American Legions. Paul was also a founding member and chairman of the Republic County Rural Water District #2. He had a passion for youth sports and could be found refereeing area high school and Junior College basketball and football games.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was a charter member of the Narka 4-H Club and was the first President. He was a leader in both the Narka and Munden 4-H Clubs.

Paul was a farmer and stockman his entire life and along with Sylvia, was designated KSU Extension Class of 2002 Master Farmer &amp; Master Homemaker. He worked 43 years as the Narka Postmaster.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors are his wife Sylvia of the home, daughter Lori Shoemaker of Narka, son Lester Shoemaker and his wife Kay of Munden. Grandchildren Lacie Clarke and her husband John of Holcomb, Kansas; Lane Shoemaker of Chester, Nebraska; Marti Terronez of Belle Plaine, Kansas; and great-granchildren Nicholas Terronez, Alivia Terronez, Josie Terronez and Nadia Munoz. Paul is also survived by his brother Marvin Shoemaker and his wife Donna of Belleville, and his sister Margaret Baetz of Branson, Missouri.

Cremation was chosen, with a Celebration of Life to be held at the Belleville Central Christian Church at a date to be announced later.

Goessel - Alda Mae Hiebert, 84, died May 1, 2020 at Bethesda home in Goessel. She was born February 11, 1936 in Goessel to Philip and Alice (Reimer) Goertzen. 

She married Tom Hiebert August 23, 2003 at First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. 

Survivors include: husband, Tom Hiebert of Goessel; son, Ronald Ediger of Goessel; brother, Lee (Phyllis) Goertzen of North Newton; sister, Frances Wistron of Stayton, Oregon; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Goertzen of Salina; numerous nieces and nephews.

Scott Bains, Jr., 64, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 5:05 a.m., Sunday, May 3rd, 2020 in the company of his loving wife, at his residence.

Scott was born in Winter Park, Florida on June 29, 1955, a son of Alberta Mae (Williams) Jones and William Scott Bains, Sr.

Scott attended the Winter Park Schools in Florida.

Scott worked for Femco and currently was working for Moridge Mfg., as a fork lift driver.

Scott enjoyed biking, talking with his friends and family.

William Scott Bains was united in marriage to Mary Anna Edwards Prine on May 14, 1993 at McPherson, Kansas. The couple established their first home together in McPherson.

He is survived by his wife Mary Bains, of McPherson, Kansas; his step-children, Justin Prine, of McPherson, Kansas, Daniel Prine and his significant other Crystal McCracken, of Lindsborg, Kansas, Gabriel Prine, of Wichita, Kansas; his siblings, Linda Will and her husband Darrel, of Oviedo, Florida, Billy Jean Chester, of Weirsdale, Florida and Shirley Bains, of Encinitas, California. He is also survived by his grandson, Gabriel Prine

Scott was preceded in death by his parents.

Velma L. Jones, 88, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2020, surrounded by family at Loving Care of McPherson. She was born on February 19, 1932, in McPherson, the daughter of Henry and Pearl Rickner. She was a graduate of McPherson High School and worked at Nations Bank for 21 years, retiring in 1997. Previous to that, she had worked at McPherson &amp; Citizens State Bank and C &amp; I Bank in Memphis, TN. Her church membership was at First Christian Church, McPherson.

She was a resident of Hutchinson, KS since 1974, having lived in California, Maryland, Rhode Island, Virginia, Tennessee, and Newfoundland before moving back to McPherson in April 2014.

Survivors include her son, Michael Jones of McPherson; sister-in-law, Joyce Rickner of Goddard, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Glenn, Norman, and Keith Rickner, and sister, Mary Allison.

Graveside service and inurnment will be 10:30 AM, Friday, May 8, 2020, in McPherson Cemetery with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating. Friends may sign the guest register from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Thursday, May 7, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.

Crawford, 84, died May 2, 2020 at the Linn Community Nursing Home, Linn, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on March 21, 1936 in Clifton, the daughter of Merle and Esther (Peterson) Black.&nbsp; Dixie grew up in Clifton and graduated from Clifton High School in 1953.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;She attended stewardess school in Omaha.&nbsp; Dixie married Veryl Crawford on July 14, 1961.&nbsp; She worked as a waitress for Big T’s Café, the Cardinal Café and Marty’s Club.&nbsp; Dixie was a member of the Faith United Church Presbyterian in Clifton and the American Legion Auxiliary.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by parents; son, Bryce Crawford and 3 brothers, Eldon, Dean and Harlan Black.

Freddie (Fred) Harold Epperson, 87, was called to Heaven April 28, 2020, surrounded by family, in his Marion, Kansas home.

Fred was born to Flora Epperson (Gaugh) and Ed Epperson on April 14, 1933 in Clarksville, Arkansas.

Fred enlisted with the United States Army at the age of 16, and then by the age of 17 was on a ship to Korea where he served 22 months in the war and was a decorated soldier. In 1954, he married his sweetheart, Bertha and together they had 3 children. &nbsp;Through much of his adult life, he was employed with Love Box Company in Wichita, Kansas for more than 25 years. His career began as a truck driver, and he was then promoted to the position of logistics and manager of all Love Box transportations companywide across several plant locations. Fred very much enjoyed the outdoors, in fact, he was well known for having the most fantastic garden with an abundance of tomatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers. He had a love for all types of animals, especially his cats, Gidget and Buster who kept him company after the passing of his sweetheart in 2018. &nbsp;He and his wife enjoyed spending time outdoors together, where they would take motorcycle rides and camping trips to Table Rock Lake and nearby lakes.

He is survived by his children, Harold (Kim) Epperson, David (Susan) Epperson, Charlotte (Chris) Coleman, brother Jimmy (Maria) Balentine, and sister Carolyn (Don) Simpson; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Bertha Epperson, his brothers, Leroy Epperson and Everett (Bud) Epperson and sister, Charlotte Baskin.

Virginia Ann (Baier) Anderes, age 86, of Elmo, Kansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 3, 2020. As she walked her final journey on this earth, she was surrounded by many loving children and grandchildren.

Virginia was born on July 22, 1933 in Salina, Kansas to James and Leona Baier. Virginia was their fourth child.

On October 11th, 1952 she wed the love of her life, Vincent (Herman) Anderes, whom she was married to for over 60 years, and had nine children: Bill Anderes, Rhonda Foth, Greg Anderes (Sharon, Diane Shoemaker (Rodney, Yvonne Woodall (Dennis, Kim Svoboda (Kevin, Mark Anderes (Jill, Mike Anderes (Lenece) and Lisa Elliott.

Virginia was a wonderful mother who was passionate about her children. Her interests were taking care of her nine children, raising flowers, and caring for her chickens. For over 20 years Virginia would take flowers to St. Columba church, where she was a lifetime member. She would frequently place fresh cut flowers at the foot of the statue of our “Blessed Virgin Mary”. These fresh cut flowers were often arranged in a beautiful bouquet of roses and gladiolus, which were her specialty.

Virginia lived her whole life in the Elmo community. She was loved by many for her warmth and kindness. She would lend a helping hand to anyone and knew no strangers. Her 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “Chicken Grandma,” adored her and enjoyed their days with her while she taught them to needlepoint, play piano and bake pies (her coconut cream pie was over the top). Perhaps her best passed-on skill, from the tales of her grandchildren, was how to properly gather chicken eggs while warding off hostile poultry.

As if raising nine kids wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Virginia also worked outside of the home. She started her career as the counter manager of the Elmo Elevator, followed by secretarial work at Tabor College, and wrapping up her career at the Salina Catholic Diocese Office of Education. Virginia was a member of the St. Columba Altar Society.

Virginia will be greatly missed by many and will never be forgotten.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Anderes; father and mother, James and Leona Baier; two sisters, Catherine Baier and Marilyn Anderes; and two brothers, James and Wayne Baier.

Virginia’s celebration of life will be a private ceremony with family members only at St. Columba Catholic church, Elmo, Kansas, followed by her interment at the Mount Calvary cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to attend the funeral procession to the burial site. We ask everyone to be mindful of proper social distancing. Anyone wishing to sign the register book may do so from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The service will be live-streamed at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2020 for family and friends. If interested in virtually attending, please reach out to a family member.

Virginia was a member of the St. Columba Altar Society.Virginia will be greatly missed by many and will never be forgotten.She is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Anderes; father and mother, James and Leona Baier; two sisters, Catherine Baier and Marilyn Anderes; and two brothers, James and Wayne Baier.Virginia’s celebration of life will be a private ceremony with family members only at St. Columba Catholic church, Elmo, Kansas, followed by her interment at the Mount Calvary cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to attend the funeral procession to the burial site. We ask everyone to be mindful of proper social distancing. Anyone wishing to sign the register book may do so from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.The service will be live-streamed at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2020 for family and friends.
