Kenneth C. “Keno” Stephenson passed away peacefully with his family at his side on August 8, 2021.&nbsp; He was born on August 5, 1926 to John and Hannah Stephenson on the family farm near Downs, Kansas.&nbsp; After graduating from Downs High School and two years helping on the dairy farm, he enlisted in the Army and served in Korea from Dec. 1946 to Jan. 1948.&nbsp; 

After returning home, he married Geraldine Schoen and moved to Lawrence, Kansas to attend the University of Kansas where he received a B.A. degree in business.&nbsp; 

In early 1953, he and his young family of three moved to Salina where he began working at Central Typewriter Company.&nbsp; He bought the company just 10 months later and over the years grew it into a prominent office equipment and supplies business, later known as Central Office Products.&nbsp; He innovated the leasing of business equipment, and in 1973 created Design Central, the office furniture and interior design aspect of the business.

Keno, as he was known to many, was very active in the Salina community as a member and leader in numerous organizations, including: &nbsp;Jaycees (President 1956), Salina’s Chamber of Commerce (President 1968), and the Salina Airport Authority (Board Chair 1988-90).&nbsp; He served on the Asbury Foundation Board of Trustees and later the Salina Regional Health Foundation (1995-2004) and was the first Chairman of its CHIP (Community Health Improvement Program) Committee; and Kansas Wesleyan University (Trustee 1985-91, Vice Chairman of the Board, and member of the Foundation Board).&nbsp; He also served First United Methodist Church as chairman of the Board of Trustees, the Pastor Relations Committee, and the FUMC Foundation and its Finance Committee, and relished the lasting friendships and devoted support of the Peacemakers and Gracefinders classes.&nbsp; 

One of his self-appointed missions in life was ensuring the long-term financial health of community service organizations so, like Johnny Appleseed planting apple trees everywhere he went, Keno encouraged, helped establish, and nurtured financial foundations in many organizations in which he was involved.

Keno had an eager appetite for travel and enjoyed many trips nationally and abroad through business associations and with family, thriving in the adventure, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures. &nbsp;His family has many special memories of those shared experiences. &nbsp;But it was at his “little place in the country” where he felt the most at home and enjoyed his gardens, fishing in his ponds, and heating his “cabin” with wood he cut, split and stacked.&nbsp; The family 4th of July weekends became their annual reunion, spending time working together on improvement projects, relaxing on the deck, and enjoying Keno’s popcorn and homegrown tomatoes.&nbsp; He was pleased and grateful for his family, Milt Allen (a longtime family friend) and others who lent a hand so that he could continue living at home in his later years, both in Salina and most recently in Scottsdale.

Keno worked with purpose, pursued his goals, built his businesses, created his bit of paradise in the country, and gave his time and wisdom to community and church.&nbsp; He also enjoyed life, fun and laughter with friends and family; communing with nature just watching his trees, ponds and wildlife; expanding cultural perspectives and seeking adventure through travel and reading; and coming home to the warmth of his fireplace next to his favorite chair.&nbsp; 

He had a gift for drawing a person into conversation and was equally comfortable chatting with a lifelong friend or a newly met one.&nbsp; He loved to entertain, hosting parties large and small, and share his wit and humor.&nbsp; He was a mentor to many, modestly teaching by example.&nbsp; He lived a life of truth and integrity, patience, wisdom, grace, humor, humility, and great generosity – hallmark qualities that have guided his life, and inspired his family, friends, and those who worked alongside him.

Keno was preceded in death by his wife, Gerry; his mother and father; brother, Blaine Stephenson; and sister, Helen Stephenson.&nbsp; He will be greatly missed by his three children, Judy Hamilton (Bill Wiecek) of Syracuse, NY, and Davis, CA, Nancy Steele of Merriam, KS, and David Stephenson (Bonni) of Paradise Valley, AZ; his three grandchildren, Shawn Hamilton (Meridith) of Louisville KY, Carolyn Steele (David DeFrees) of Overland Park, KS, and Matt Steele of Merriam, KS; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hamilton, Jillian Hamilton, and Penelope DeFrees – all of whom love him dearly.

Funeral arrangements by Ryan Mortuary.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 21 at First United Methodist Church, 122 N. 8th St, Salina, KS, and will be livestreamed.&nbsp; In keeping with Keno’s wishes, and to protect family members who are not able to be vaccinated, the Stephenson family requests that all attendees wear masks and that vaccinated persons join them in person in the sanctuary, 2nd floor.&nbsp; Those not yet vaccinated are invited to share in the service by watching the livestream together in Fellowship Hall, 1st floor.

The family suggests memorial donations to foundations in Salina, such as the Greater Salina Community Foundation and the Salina Regional Health Center Foundation.

Jamie Christine Kempke (Blackwell), 44, of Gypsum, KS passed away peacefully in Salina on August 11, 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be held Friday, August 20, 2021 from 6 p.m. -8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Roselawn, 1920 E. Crawford Street, Salina, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jamie had a love for her husband and boys, her sisters and family, and all her friends.&nbsp; Jamie enjoyed listening to church hymns, baking, watching the birds, tending to her flowers, and spending time with her family and friends. She also had a special love for being a preschool teacher. Many know Jamie from the work she did in ensuring our most precious little children would be more than ready for kindergarten.&nbsp; She was the founder, director, and teacher at Garden of Giggles Child Care.&nbsp; A name developed due to her love of plants and children. Both gifts of love she received from her mother. Through the years, Jamie strived to fulfill her God-given purpose for helping others.&nbsp; She was meant to give back to her community. All her work in the preschool, sports, her church, and her community provided her so much joy.

While our hearts hurt, and our time with her cut short, we are forever grateful for the years gifted. We find comfort in the knowledge that our Heavenly Father has reunited Jamie with her mother.&nbsp; We hold onto her memories and her strength.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jamie is preceded in death by her mother Judy Ann Fifer.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Darin Kempke; her two sons, Jackson and Tyler; along with her father Jack Blackwell of Enterprise; Jamie’s two sisters, Jacque Backhus (Gary, Kodee, Hannah) of Salina,&nbsp; Jody Moeschler (Mike, Hayle, Isaiah, Alexis, Ethan) of Bonner Springs; her stepdad Tom Fifer (Ann) of Bradenton, Florida; her in-laws, Danny and Peggy Kempke; and sister-in-law Renee Kempke (Connor, Kelsey, Kylie, Karter, Katie) of Kanopolis.

Kenneth L. Huber Jr, son of Kenneth L. Huber Sr. and Madalene L. (Weir) Huber&nbsp;was born October 9, 1946 at Concordia, Kansas and passed away on August 11, 2021 at his home in Formoso, Kansas at the age of 74.

He was a crane operator and construction supervisor for Reece Construction Company and also worked for the state of Kansas Department of Transportation.&nbsp; 

He was united in marriage to Rebecca Jo Mohler on June 4, 1963 and to this union three children were born, Jerry, Judy and Janet.

He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth&nbsp; and Madalene Huber, wife Rebecca Jo Huber, father and mother-in-law Virgil and Ada Mohler, two sisters, Patricia McFarlane, Gloria Jean Guzik, two sisters-in-law, Gloria Ann Massey, Iris Mae Mohler, and brother-in-law, Michael Mohler.

He is survived by son Jerry (Erlyn) Huber of Formoso, KS, daughters Judy Yvonne Huber of Blue Springs, MO, Janet (Dan) Higer of Mankato, KS, sister Nancy Sue Holland, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Bret (Arianne) Engel, Madi and Kason, Heather (Heath) Woodall, Corbyn and Paisley, Sammi (Estevan) Maturino, Chloe and Pru, Travis Novak, Tycen and Mason Higer, Amanda (Matt) Cudney, Lilah and Archer, Nick Higer.

He was later promoted to manager of Mission Control Center for Lockheed Martin until his retirement when the space shuttle missions came to an end.

After his retirement from NASA, John relocated to Springfield, Missouri where he lived until moving to Herington, Kansas.

John had no children but had a deep love for his furry companions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include: sisters Marilyn Ham of Redondo Beach, California, Susie (Wesley) McAmis of Springfield, Missouri; great-nephew Preston McAmis; dear friend Michelle Miller of Junction City; his best friend Molly the dog, of the home.

Alice Ann Freeman Connelly Kerr was born August 14, 1934 and passed away peacefully on November 20, 2020 surrounded by loved ones. Alice was born in Hamilton, Kansas in her parents’ farmhouse in the midst of a dust storm. This may have been the reason she was as tough as she has been for 86 years. 

Survived by daughter Megan Connelly, stepdaughter Brenda Humphrey (Dean) and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-great nephew. 

Preceded in death by her husbands John Connelly and Earl Kerr, mother Lydia Shields Freeman, father Henry Freeman, sisters Mary Ellen Jernigan (Derald) and Martha Ames (Bob), niece Heidi Jernigan Stanbrough and nephew Jeff Jernigan. 

Alice lived in Hamilton until age 7 when she moved to Concordia, Kansas. The family thrived in Concordia where her father was mayor and they owned the town grocery store. She graduated from Concordia High School in 1952. Alice enjoyed going back to Concordia for every high school reunion up until 2018. She and her high school friends enjoyed each other and shared so many stories. 

She then went to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and received her diploma in nursing in 1956. She worked in St. Louis as a labor and delivery nurse. 

She married John in 1959 and moved to Denver, Colorado. She became a pediatric nurse and remained caring for kids for over 25 years. She inspired her daughter Megan to be a pediatric nurse. In 1988 they moved to Topeka, Kansas where Alice returned to labor and delivery and was a charge nurse. Several nurses and doctors comment on how much she taught and mentored them. 

John passed away in 1996 and she then married longtime friend Earl. She retired and moved back to Denver in 2000 where she stayed until she moved to Omaha to be closer to daughter Megan. 

Alice lived a joyous life. She very much enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved to send birthday cards to all of her family, shop with her great-nieces, go out to eat, play games, read, watch football, cheer for Creighton basketball and have an occasional cocktail of quality Scotch. In her final hours, she was able to listen to many tributes by family and friends. Her great-nephew Steve said it best when he said she was like the sunflowers she loves, always looking towards the light. She was always positive and never complained, even through a very difficult year. She will be missed by so many.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved&nbsp;JeKayla Marie Veal&nbsp;who was born on January 27, 2008. She peacefully passed away on August 10, 2021, in her sleep after a long struggle with chronic lung disease as well as other health complications. 

JeKayla was a spry student at South Middle School who did not let her cerebral palsy hold her back from doing the things she enjoyed. She loved listening to stories, especially mysteries! This probably explains why she is so delighted by a good prank and gets a tickle out of someone else's mischief! She was always the most ornery out of the bunch. 

Her favorite things were bubbles, bells, and going outside for a "bumpy" stroll on the road. She loved her "girl parties" and getting her nails painted with her favorite girls. Though she faced many challenges, JeKayla always held a smile so contagious, it would've brightened up anyone's day! She loves her family and felt the best when included in activities along with everyone. 

JeKayla was a ray of sunshine that brightened up everyone’s lives and genuinely has everyone wrapped around her fingers. A life may last just for a moment, but memories can make that moment last forever. We will dearly miss you, baby girl, you will always be in our hearts. May God wrap His loving arms around you and fill you with His peace in His kingdom of Heaven.

Joan passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 2, 1943, in Herington, Kansas. She was the daughter of Bud and Edna Iiams. Joan graduated from Herington High School in 1961, Emporia State University in 1965, and received her master's degree from Kansas State University.

Joan taught for 36 years at Washington Elementary School in Junction City. She taught 2nd and 3rd grades as well as a 3rd-4th combo. She was a John’s Hopkins Trainer for Success for All Reading Program for her school.

Joan had many hobbies including sewing for herself, family, and friends, made many gorgeous quilts, enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, loved traveling - toured all 50 states and collected souvenir shot glasses from every state, vacationed in many foreign countries, and created beautiful memory photo albums -&nbsp; enjoyed gourmet cooking, and was a true animal lover of dogs, cats, and horses. When she was younger, she owned several horses and enjoyed horseback riding. She was a member of KNEA her entire teaching career, also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Joan is survived by her son Jeff Turner, (Jodi), grandchildren Grant, Rachel, and Tara; her son Jamie Dodd; Archie Moore was her wonderful companion for 23 years. He helped her and stayed by her side; her sister Judy Domke, (Kerry), her nephew Ethan Domke, (Mindy), Dylan and Clara, her nephew Nicolas Domke (Sarah), Josephine and Sofia; and many dear friends and family members.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 10:00 a.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington. The date has been changed due to Covid-19.

SALINA –&nbsp;Charles (Chuck or Charlie) Raymond Frank, 89, of Salina went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. Chuck was born September 30, 1931 in Hays, KS to the late Joseph Samuel and the late Mary Rose (Schumacher) Frank.

He married Norma Marie Hickert on April 19, 1954 at New Almelo, KS.

Chuck was an airman for the U.S. Marine Corps, Air Wing, Cherry Point, NC. He was assigned to duties aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea in the Mediterranean Sea and the U.S.S Bennington off the coast of Cuba. &nbsp;

Chuck was the vice president of J.S. Frank Construction in Salina, a project manager for Turnmar Construction Co. in Englewood, CO and a project manager for Cherokee General Contractors, Inc. in Denver, CO. Additionally he was a self-employed general contractor in Aurora, CO and an estimator and field superintendent for Western Property Management Co. in Denver, CO.

He is survived by his wife Norma, Salina; son Richard, Lenora, KS; daughter Gretchen (Gene) Browning, Huntsville, TX; son Jerry (Greta), Salina; daughter Angela (Len) York Crane, Philadelphia, PA, grandchildren Russell York, Charles York (Sophie Lipman), Joshua (Courtney) York, Brandy Frank (Tim Elder), great-grandson Levi Faulhaber, sisters Jenny Keeler, Salina; MaryJo Schuster, Sheboygan, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter Theresa Frank; his parents J.S. and Mary Frank; his brothers Francis and Leroy; his sisters Edna, Delores and Margaret.

Verlla Coughenour, age 91, and a longtime resident of Manhattan, died Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Bethany Village in Lindsborg, Ks.

Verlla was born on February 11, 1930 in Beaver, Oklahoma to Melvin and Pearl (Wiltfong) Hummer.  She and her younger brother, Lloyd Hummer, were raised on a farm in Oklahoma, just north of Booker, Texas.  She attended a two room school house in Huntoon, Texas, upper grade school in Booker, Texas and graduated from Perryton High School in 1948.   A product of the Great Depression and the Dustbowl, one of her earliest memories was of Black Sunday at the age of 5.   As she aged with dementia, her memories of those Dustbowl days remained strong.  She grew up on the farm with a strong work ethic, a close-knit group of special cousins and a faith steeped in the Church of the Brethren values.

She attended McPherson College for two years where she met Dean Coughenour.  They were married on August 24, 1951 in Waka, Texas. They immediately settled in Oberlin, Kansas where Dean took a teaching job at the local high school.  They began a family with Tim born in 1953,  Susan in 1956, and Evan in 1961.   

In 1958 they moved to Manhattan where they owned and operated AgPress, a printing and publishing company. 

 Verlla developed many special friendships over her 60 years in Manhattan.    She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of PEO Chapter DE for most of those 60 years.  She played in several bridge clubs, enjoyed reading and was fastidious in keeping up the home and yard.  In the mid- 70s, Dean and Verlla started playing tennis regularly and the sport kept them young and active for the next 30 years.

Verlla’s love for travel started with annual family vacations in the early 60s.  After the kids were out of the house, Dean and Verlla extended their travels abroad.  Over the course of her life, she visited 49 of the 50 states and all seven continents. 

Verlla was a steady force.  She was kind, practical, even-tempered and orderly with a capital "O".  

She is survived by her three children, Tim Coughenour of Lawrence, Susan Coughenour Lundstrom (Greg) of Lindsborg and Evan Coughenour (Diane) of Manhattan; two grandchildren Eric Lundstrom (Erin) and Bebe Coughenour Juen (John); six gre-grandchildren Carter, Beckett, Harper, Isis, Tala and Kai; nine nieces and nephews and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dean Coughenour, parents Melvin and Pearl Hummer, brother Lloyd Hummer and infant sister Genevieve. 

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.  A private family internment will precede the service.

Hillsboro - Brett Dee Wright, 47, passed away July 28, 2021 at his residence in Hillsboro. He was born August 26, 1973 in Newton to Franklin and Patricia Carol (Prewit) Harvey and was brought home to reside in Potwin Kansas with his brother Tony and sister Penny. Brett grew up in Potwin, he attended Potwin Elementary School, Potwin Middle School and Remington High School.

He married Teresa Wright September 18, 2017 in Hillsboro. 

Brett is survived by his wife Teresa Wright, sons Kyle Harvey (Hannah) daughter Kelsey Rodriquez, and Johnathan Harvey, mother Carol Prewit, mother Jeanie Harvey, siblings Tony Harvey (Randi) Penny Peters (Richard) Carolyn Tice (Tom) Carl Mathews (Shirley) Shirley Schmidt (Alfred) Chuck Mathews, his grandchildren, many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and all who knew him.

Brett is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Benjamin and Beulah Harvey, maternal grandparents Theodore and Geraldine Pope (Spivey), wife Kimberly Harvey, father Lee Bob Harvey, sister Susan Mathews and nephew Tyler Harvey.&nbsp;

A private Celebration of Life service will be held at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

Beulah’s life began on May 6, 1928 in Menlo, IA. She was the daughter of Orlando “Lewis” and Myrtle E. (Campbell) Pritchard. She was a 1946 graduate of Hatfield High School in Hatfield, MO. Beulah was united in marriage to Darrell Weigart on January 23, 1949 in Hatfield. 

She loved to quilt, gardening, crocheting and her cats. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, enjoyed playing cards, especially pitch and she had a strong faith background. 

Her greatest joy was her family which includes her children Pamela (Larry) Kotlarczyk of Tempe, AZ, Kathy Brown of Maricopa, AZ, Terry (Debra) Weigart, and Juliane Neuwirth of Waynesville, MO.; ten grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren. 

Beulah passed away on August 3, 2021 at St. Luke’s Living Center in Marion. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Darrell, son Jerry Lynn Weigart, and siblings Edward and Delbert Pritchard, and Evaleen Hughes. 

Her family will gather with friends on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Marion led by Pastor Josh Wesner.

Max Hamilton Byram, 28, of Council Grove, Kansas, was in a fatal motorcycle accident on July 28, 2021. He was born and raised in Council Grove. Growing up on a farm taught Max how to be a hard worker. As a kid he loved games of all kinds, making art, and just being goofy. He learned to play the guitar when he was in high school and never stopped.

His career in the food industry began at the Hays House. In 2017 Max started BG’s Bar and Grill with Harley Grimmett. Being co-owner of BG’s made it easy for him to share his skill of hospitality. His warm spirit is what made BG’s a place people wanted to be, even if it meant smelling like a slider.

Before BG’s, Max graduated from CGHS, then from Cloud County Community College with a degree in wind energy technology. Beyond his degree, Max took multiple music courses and formed his first band, Call It A Night. As time progressed Max went on to become the lead singer for The Box Turtles and band member of Derek Calvin and The All Nighters. Creating music was one of Max’s greatest joys but encouraging others’ music was also important to him. He built and founded Diesel Bro’s Studio for recording local talent.

Max was passionate about supporting all the arts. Being president of the Council Grove Arts Council was one way he encouraged the arts. In 2017 Max founded Seth Fest, a free music and arts festival promoting local artists. He was also involved in Kansas Free for Arts in Emporia.

At the end of his life Max was running for mayor of Council Grove. He believed in his community, his friends and neighbors. He truly felt that Council Grove was the best place on the planet. He wanted to not only build the community but each individual in it. Although he cannot fulfill the job of mayor, it would make him proud to see others becoming involved in our community. Beyond running for Mayor he was involved with CG softball club, Washunga Days, City of CG Sales Tax Grant Committee, City of CG 4th of July committee, Community Theatre, Chamber of Commerce, and self-proclaimed Master of the Post. Max brought a lot of love and laughter into the world. He didn’t know a stranger; he was a friend to all. He could fill your soul with his music, lift your spirits with his smile, and fill your belly with his delicious cooking. He will be truly missed.He was preceded in death by his grandmas, Loretta Keyser and Georgine Byram. Max is survived by his daughter Georgia Byram; wife Cali Byram; grandparents Melvin and Lucy Keyser, Harold Byram; parents Harry and Melanie Byram; sisters Anneliese (Jay) Troxell, Mary (Aaron) Byram Yoder; nieces and nephews Ada, Elmer, Daphne, Wallace. There will be a private funeral and burial. This year at Seth Fest, a public memorial service will be held Saturday, August 21 from 10 a.m.-12&nbsp; p.m., located at the Riverwalk Amphitheater (14 W Main St). The ceremony will be an open mic for those who wish to share words of remembrance and/or music. The family plans to record the event in hopes to one day show his daughter all the good things Max did and all the people he encouraged.
