Police are investigating the theft of three guns from a central Salina residence on Wednesday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, someone stole the following from a residence in the 1000 block of South Santa Fe Avenue.

A black Rock Island Armory 1911 9mm handgun, valued at $700

A black American Tactical GSG 1911 22 caliber handgun, valued at $350

An American Firearms compact 22, valued at $100

Steven Trumbo, 54, of Salina, told police that when he returned home from work Wednesday, he noticed damage to his front door frame and a broken plexiglass window, Forrester said. When Trumbo went into his bedroom, he found three empty gun cases on his bed, Forrester said.

According to the National Weather Service, cold and breezy weather will prevail today. Morning wind chills will drop to around 10 below for many across the area, with forecast high temperatures only reaching the teens and 20s. 

NWS noted that wind chills will dip below zero once again tonight, and will impact the region once again early Friday morning.

According to NWS, strong and gusty south winds may support very high grassland fire danger Friday afternoon in central Kansas.

The cold snap, however, will be short-lived, with temperatures reaching the 50s to near 60 degrees this weekend.

This annual award honoring rural hospital performance is determined by the results of iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength INDEX®, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2020.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 5:30p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 GMC Acadia driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Jesse Flores, 23, Manhattan, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Kimball Avenue.&nbsp;

The driver could not stop and rear ended 2008 Nissan Maxima driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Brittney Teon Porter, 24, Mableton, GA., who was stopped for a red light.&nbsp;

The Nissan impacted a 2014 Volvo driven by&nbsp; Richard James Collier, 34, Hollywood, FL., and a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by&nbsp; John Samuel Stivers, 18, Abilene, that were also stopped for the red light.

EMS transported a passenger in the Nissan Brianna Christine Porter, 25, Manhattan, to Via Christi.

&nbsp;Flores, Porter, Collier and Stivers were not injured. All were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;More than 1,430 students completed degree requirements from Kansas State University in fall 2019. The graduates are from 89 Kansas counties, 42 states, and 30 countries.

The university awarded 1,213 bachelor's degrees, 244 master's degrees, 54 doctorates, and four associate degrees. Several students earned multiple degrees.&nbsp;

More than 200 students earned graduation honors for outstanding academic performance. WICHITA – Patients fighting cancer need more blood than patients fighting any other disease, using nearly one-quarter of the nation’s blood supply.

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 3 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. An estimated 16,170 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Kansas this year. Many of these people will likely have a need for blood.

“A loved one’s cancer diagnosis often makes families and friends feel helpless. That’s why theGive Blood to Give Timepartnership with the American Cancer Society is so important,” said Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer, AmericanRedCross. “When someone donates blood or platelets or makes a financial gift, they are helping to give patients and their families time, resources and the hope they need to fight back.”

More people are needed to donate regularly to help meet the need.

Through this partnership, we want people to know there are multiple ways they can help and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families.”

GSCF grant applications due Saturday

Salina Police are looking for a male suspect seen on surveillance video breaking into a YMCA locker and then stealing a Jeep from the parking lot on Tuesday afternoon.

The man was described as being a white male approximately 33 years of age, 5'-7", and weighing approximately 185 pounds, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The man had a large beard and was wearing a black beanie, a gray and purple sweatshirt with "Wildcats" on the front, blue jeans, and red shoes.

According to Forrester, the man was seen on surveillance video getting off a CityGo bus at the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive, shortly after 3 p.m. He then was seen going directly to the locker room, Forrester said. A few minutes later, the man was seen going outside and getting into a black 2014 Jeep Wrangler belonging to Tyler Bouasanouvong, 24, of Salina, Forrester said.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Bouasanouvong went into the locker room and found that his locker had been broken into and his backpack was on the floor, Forrester said. Bouasanouvong's wallet and keys, as well as $5 worth of quarters, and the Master Lock lock from the locker were gone, Forrester added. Bouasanouvong then went outside and discovered that his Jeep also was missing, Forrester said.

The Jeep, valued at $25,000, had a Kansas license plate of 373 LVA, Forrester said. The items stolen from the locker were valued at $200, he said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for Dickinson County.

Total snow accumulations of one to two inches with locally higher amounts, mainly during the morning, is expected. Snow should mix with rain during the afternoon.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous  conditions could impact both the morning and evening commute.

Additionally, NWS in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight tonight for the following counties in our area.

Wet snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches. Possible flash freeze this evening and tonight, with strong and gusty north winds this evening and tonight.

Plan on slippery road conditions especially on   untreated surfaces. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. There will be a refreeze on wet and slushy roads this evening and tonight, possibly impacting the Thursday morning commute.

NWS in Wichita also has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight for the following countities in the area.

It’s tough to make a difference in this world, and it’s impossible to do so and remain comfortable. As American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall is fond of repeating the advice his father gave him: Making a difference requires you to get outside your fencerows.

No matter what difference you want to make, leaving your fencerow in the rearview mirror likely will have a bigger effect on you than anything else.

Mark Twain said it best in “Innocents Abroad” when he wrote, “Travel&nbsp;is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

I’ve been fortunate in my life to have had the opportunity to travel fairly frequently. Though one of my biggest regrets is quitting Spanish class after two years in high school. I’ve been to four countries where it’s the dominant language, yet I’m speechless after saying my name and a few pleasantries.

And while I’ve had some slight mishaps on a few journeys, including my recent jaunt to the AFBF Annual Convention in Austin, upon arrival, I’ve never had an unpleasant experience. I’ve been tired, lost and uncomfortable in my surroundings. I also survived and become a better person for it.

The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.”One thing I’m still certain of is getting outside your fencerow is difficult. There’s always one more thing that needs done or some other excuse not to leave. But the thing is you don’t have to go far – just a little beyond the mailbox to see something you haven’t seen before; experience something new; feel the uneasiness in your gut from venturing outside your comfort zone.It means stepping up, speaking out and, quite possibly, becoming the center of attention, if only momentarily. It means experiencing new thoughts, new people and new places. Simply put, it means seeing, doing, traveling – growing.That’s the real reason getting outside your fencerows is so incredibly valuable – it allows you to grow. Getting away makes you vulnerable. It makes you reliant on other.
