Stiefel announces that multiple performances rescheduled

Police continue to investigate an incident from late Thursday night in which a vehicle was struck by several bullets in a south Salina neighborhood.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, officers were dispatched to the 800 block of East Wayne Avenue on Friday for the report of damage to property the night before. A 16-year-old female who was visiting someone at an apartment complex in the 800 block of East Wayne Avenue reported to police that several bullets had been fired into the trunk and back window of her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, he said. Damage was estimated at $1,000, he added.

Witnesses told police that they heard six to seven gunshots at approximately 11 p.m. on Thursday, Forrester said. Another witness told police that he heard the gunshots and then saw a red car exit the parking lot of the apartment complex, he added.

Forrester said no shell casings were found.

Car sustains damage after gunfire in south Salina

A 29-year-old Salina man was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly being in two accidents.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Monday that officers were dispatched to the intersection of South Ohio Street and East Crawford Street at 11:45 p.m. Saturday for the report of a two-vehicle accident.

A 2014 Ford Focus, driven by Bailee Chance, 19, of Bennington, was eastbound on East Crawford Street in the left turn lane, waiting to turn north onto South Ohio Street, when a white Ford F150 pickup that was southbound on South Ohio Street attempted a right turn onto westbound East Crawford Street, Forrester said. The pickup made a wide turn, hit the Focus headon, and ended up on the hood of the Focus, he said. The pickup then drove away, Forrester added.

Chance and a 20-year-old male passenger from Salina, were not injured, he said.

The Focus sustained disabling damage to the left front of the vehicle and was towed from the scene, Forrester said.

Approximately 15 minutes later, while officers were still working that accident, other officers were dispatched to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 (I-70) at milemarker 252, just west of the North Ninth Street exit for the report of an accident involving a tractor-trailer rig and a white Ford F150 pickup, Forrester explained.

The driver of the 2015 International rig, Timothy Elliott, 43, of Kingman, told officers that he was traveling eastbound on I-70 when he observed the white 2009 Ford F150 in the median, Forrester said. Elliott told police that the pickup left the median, crossed over the passing lane and into the driving lane, striking the wheels of his rig, according to Forrester.

Officers arrested the driver of the pickup, Alonzo Cardona-Ramirez, 29, of Salina, on suspicion of the following in connection with the I-70 accident, Forrester said.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Forrester said the investigation of the accident at South Ohio Street and East Crawford Street was still under investigation, but that additional charges against Cardona-Ramirez could be requested in that incident as well.

The Ford F150 was disabled and had to be towed, Forrester said. Additionally, the tires on the tractor-trailer rig were damaged, he said.

Eagle launches new website to help local businesses during crisis

Severe storms are likely for late tonight across much of the region. 

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, storms are forecast to start impacting locations generally west of Interstate 135 after 10 p.m. and the remainder of the area after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Large hail will be the primary hazard with hail size ranging from dime to golf ball size, NWS noted. Winds of 45 to 55 mph are also possible.

Traffic will be reduced to one 12-foot lane with a reduced speed through the work zone. Drivers should expect minor delays, not exceeding five minutes.

APAC Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and has scheduled this project to be completed in May 2020, weather permitting, at a cost of $735,000.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approach and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp; To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kandrive.org/" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>&nbsp;or call 5-1-1.

"We are determined to provide continued high-quality support and service to our community during this unique circumstance.&nbsp;&nbsp;This crisis is affecting everyone, especially those areas involving our core pillars of health, education, and financial stability," SAUW noted in a news release.

The SAUW at the beginning of this month opened the Make A Difference granting cycle for the 2020 fiscal year in which $75,000 would be granted to local non-profit agencies.&nbsp; It was strongly believed by SAUW staff and the board of directors that SAUW need to put a portion of these funds to use immediately, with less constraints.&nbsp;&nbsp;With that being said, the SAUW staff and board of directors have worked to develop the following:

UPDATE: SAUW set up Emergency Relief Fund

There are unique situations when a teacher can capture every student’s attention. March 15, 2011 was one such day. An earthquake had generated a 42-foot high tsunami off the coast of Japan the Friday before and it had struck the Fukishima power plant. Within several days, it had knocked out the emergency generators that kept the pumps cooling the nuclear reactors, and three nuclear cores melted.

I entered my general biology class announcing that we were not covering the lesson in the syllabus but would learn about the types of radiation and how they affected the human body. Every eye followed my illustrations and every question was answered. When my students left class, they found they could answer their classmates’ and family’s questions. They became teachers, and to teach is to learn twice. When I gave the next test, everyone in class got 100 percent of the questions on nuclear biology correct.

That is a teaching moment, where emotional concerns of the moment result in long term learning. Today, biology teachers have a rare opportunity to teach lessons in human anatomy, physiology and disease virology. And while basic knowledge is important, it is just as important that students be able to ask questions based on that knowledge. As I speak at overseas conferences, I emphasize that we don’t get Nobel Prizes for having memorized the book, but for understanding the concepts and formulating new questions that need to be answered. But we also need to ask questions just to understand and survive.

So what are the questions that today’s students should be asking about the COVID-19 epidemic?

Since it is a virus, how do viruses replicate? Is it a DNA or RNA virus? Where did it come from? How can we use its genetic code to trace its origin?&nbsp; &nbsp;

How is it transmitted to a human—as a virus particle, in a mucous droplet? How does it enter a patient—via breathing, oral route, through skin? What prevents transmission—hand washing, masks (and what type, social distancing?&nbsp; Can this virus survive as an infectious agent on surfaces and be picked up by hand contact? For how long? Will infections decline in warmer seasons?

What are the symptoms of becoming ill with this virus? Do infected people shed the virus before they get sick and express symptoms? How long is this incubation period? For how much time should they be isolated? Do they shed the virus after they have recovered and feel well, and for how long?&nbsp; Are there individuals who are infected who never show any symptoms of being ill, and if so, how big a proportion of the population are they?

How can we test to distinguish it from other infectious diseases that present the same symptoms?

&nbsp;Exactly how does the virus cause the illness? What tissues are affected? How much damage occurs? Is there a difference in virulence among different ages, between sexes, or among different populations? What are the chances of dying from the virus infection? Can it cause permanent disability in some people who survive?

Are there medications that would help prevent the infection? Or make the symptoms milder? What equipment is needed for the very ill who cannot breathe? How rapidly is it spread from person-to-person, that is, how contagious is it? How would a vaccine be made?&nbsp; How would we know it is effective? Safe?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When the COVID-19 epidemic is over, a student will not likely need to remember the information specific to this disease. But they will need to retain the ability to logically and scientifically inquire into the next challenge that comes along.

Science teachers with solid training in human anatomy and physiology as well as microbiology can answer most of the above questions for a classroom of students today. But good teachers will also lead students into asking the subsequent questions. And a highly involved class will generate much of this logical questioning. And where our current experts have not yet found the answers, that is where the good teacher leads the students into just what further experiments and data are needed. A classroom of students reinforces each other.&nbsp; Understanding grows and “aha!” occurs as students listen to the instructor and to each other. This does not occur when an isolated student is watching a presentation on a screen.&nbsp; &nbsp;

An earthquake had generated a 42-foot high tsunami off the coast of Japan the Friday before and it had struck the Fukishima power plant. Within several days, it had knocked out the emergency generators that kept the pumps cooling the nuclear reactors, and three nuclear cores melted.I entered my general biology class announcing that we were not covering the lesson in the syllabus but would learn about the types of radiation and how they affected the human body. Every eye followed my illustrations and every question was answered. When my students left class, they found they could answer their classmates’ and family’s questions. They became teachers, and to teach is to learn twice. When I gave the next test, everyone in class got 100 percent of the questions on nuclear biology correct.That is a teaching moment, where emotional concerns of the moment result in long term learning. Today, biology teachers have a rare opportunity to teach lessons in human anatomy, physiology and disease virology. And while basic knowledge is important, it is just as important that students be able to ask questions based on that knowledge. As I speak at overseas conferences, I emphasize that we don’t get Nobel Prizes for having memorized the book, but for understanding the concepts and formulating new questions that need to be answered. But we also need to ask questions just to understand and survive.So what are the questions that today’s students should be asking about the COVID-19 epidemic?Since it is a virus, how do viruses replicate? Is it a DNA or RNA virus? Where did it come from? How can we use its genetic code to trace its origin?&nbsp; &nbsp;How is it transmitted to a human—as a virus particle, in a mucous droplet? How does it enter a patient—via breathing, oral route, through skin? What prevents transmission—hand washing, masks (and what type, social distancing?&nbsp; Can this virus survive as an infectious agent on surfaces and be picked up by hand contact? For how long? Will infections decline in warmer seasons?What are the symptoms of becoming ill with this virus? Do infected people shed the virus before they get sick and express symptoms? How long is this incubation period? For how much time should they be isolated? Do they shed the virus after they have recovered and feel well, and for how long?&nbsp; Are there individuals who are infected who never show any symptoms of being ill, and if so, how big a proportion of the population are they?How can we test to distinguish it from other infectious diseases that present the same symptoms?&nbsp;Exactly how does the virus cause the illness? What tissues are affected? How much damage occurs? Is there a difference in virulence among different ages, between sexes, or among different populations? What are the chances of dying from the virus infection? Can it cause permanent disability in some people who survive?Are there medications that would help prevent the infection? Or make the symptoms milder? What equipment is needed for the very ill who cannot breathe? How rapidly is it spread from person-to-person, that is, how contagious is it? How would a vaccine be made?&nbsp; How would we know it is effective? Safe?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When the COVID-19 epidemic is over, a student will not likely need to remember the information specific to this disease. But they will need to retain the ability to logically and scientifically inquire into the next challenge that comes along.Science teachers with solid training in human anatomy and physiology as well as microbiology can answer most of the above questions for a classroom of students today. But good teachers will also lead students into asking the subsequent questions. And a highly involved class will generate much of this logical questioning. And where our current experts have not yet found the answers, that is where the good teacher leads the students into just what further experiments and data are needed. A classroom of students reinforces each other.&nbsp; Understanding grows and “aha!” occurs as students listen to the instructor and to each other. This does not occur when an isolated student is watching a presentation on a screen.&nbsp; &nbsp;Nor can these lessons occur when a high school science teacher lacks any coursework in human anatomy and physiology and disease microbiology. Kenwoodview seeks pen pals for its residents

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, strong to severe thunderstorms could start as early as Monday afternoon, but will become increasing likely Monday night. The strongest storms are expected across southern Kansas. 

The most likely threats are dime to quarter size hail and 50 mph winds, however a few severe storms may produce half dollar to golfball sized hail, NWS noted. A tornado cannot be ruled out along the Kansas Oklahoma border from a northern Oklahoma storm moving northeast.

NWS: Chance for storms on Monday

Let’s hop on a transatlantic flight to London. A woman is placing a spinning wheel on the floor in front of her seat and will spin yarn while crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The spinning wheel is a handmade, portable spinning wheel which was built by a pair of craftsmen in rural Kansas. These beautiful spinning wheels are being sold from coast to coast and beyond.

Mark and Julie Lambert are the founders and owners of Athena Spinning, the creators of this beautiful spinning wheel. “Five years ago, I didn’t know spinning wheels existed outside of fairy tales,” Julie said. She and her husband Mark were working as insurance adjusters and living in south Texas. Their job required them to travel on short notice to some disaster scene and then stay for an extended period.

“I saw a woman spinning with a wheel and I was intrigued,” Julie said, having crocheted since she was nine. She and Mark also liked to build their own furniture. He’s an engineer. When Julie said she wanted a spinning wheel, Mark said he would make her one.

The plans went through many revisions. “I thought I was done,” Mark said. Julie wanted one that was just perfect: Attractive, compact, and easy to use and assemble when traveling. When told that his creation looked like a work of art, Mark said with a smile, “That’s her fault. She’s the artist.”

After building 17 models to meet Julie’s requirements for the perfect wheel, they had it.&nbsp;&nbsp;A friend said that the wheels were so beautiful that they could sell them. Mark and Julie decided to give it a try. Meanwhile, they wanted to move to a location that was situated somewhere between grandkids in Wyoming and Chicago, but not too far north. They settled in Chanute, Kansas.

Their final spinning wheel design has a wheel held by an arm with two fingerholes in the top that resemble the eyes of an owl. As the Lamberts thought about a name for their business, they thought about the owl. Through research, they found that the Greek goddess Athena is a symbol of wisdom, defense of the home, and fiber arts. Athena is often depicted with an owl on her shoulder for wisdom, a shield for defense, and a drop spindle which is the primitive tool used to spin yarn. The connection was so strong they named their business Athena Spinning.

The Lamberts signed up for a trade show to try selling their travel wheels. They brought six wheels in hopes they might sell one or two. By the end of the show, all six were sold.

Today, Mark and Julie Lambert travel the country, selling the Athena travel spinning wheel at fiber festivals from coast to coast. “These wheels are ideal for travelers,” Julie said. The wheel weighs 10 pounds and breaks down into three pieces that nest together and easily fit in a tote bag or overhead luggage. The wheels are eye-catching and attractive, handcrafted from maple and walnut.

Julie loved spinning, but she also needed a break from demonstrating it during festivals. She insisted that Mark learn to spin also. He protested, claiming that “It would not give me joy,” but he finally learned to spin. He now admits, “Spinning is one of the most relaxing things I’ve ever done.”

The Lamberts travel in their RV and take their spinning wheels to shows. “My happy place is to be spinning at my wheel between shows, next to a campfire by a lake at sunset,” Julie said. “Everything about this has been rewarding,” she said, especially the people they’ve met.

It’s a remarkable record for a business based in the rural community of Chanute, population 9,119 people. Now, that’s rural.

A woman is placing a spinning wheel on the floor in front of her seat and will spin yarn while crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The spinning wheel is a handmade, portable spinning wheel which was built by a pair of craftsmen in rural Kansas. These beautiful spinning wheels are being sold from coast to coast and beyond.Mark and Julie Lambert are the founders and owners of Athena Spinning, the creators of this beautiful spinning wheel. “Five years ago, I didn’t know spinning wheels existed outside of fairy tales,” Julie said. She and her husband Mark were working as insurance adjusters and living in south Texas. Their job required them to travel on short notice to some disaster scene and then stay for an extended period.“I saw a woman spinning with a wheel and I was intrigued,” Julie said, having crocheted since she was nine. She and Mark also liked to build their own furniture. He’s an engineer. When Julie said she wanted a spinning wheel, Mark said he would make her one.The plans went through many revisions. “I thought I was done,” Mark said. Julie wanted one that was just perfect: Attractive, compact, and easy to use and assemble when traveling. When told that his creation looked like a work of art, Mark said with a smile, “That’s her fault. She’s the artist.”After building 17 models to meet Julie’s requirements for the perfect wheel, they had it.&nbsp;&nbsp;A friend said that the wheels were so beautiful that they could sell them. Mark and Julie decided to give it a try. Meanwhile, they wanted to move to a location that was situated somewhere between grandkids in Wyoming and Chicago, but not too far north. They settled in Chanute, Kansas.Their final spinning wheel design has a wheel held by an arm with two fingerholes in the top that resemble the eyes of an owl. As the Lamberts thought about a name for their business, they thought about the owl. Through research, they found that the Greek goddess Athena is a symbol of wisdom, defense of the home, and fiber arts. Athena is often depicted with an owl on her shoulder for wisdom, a shield for defense, and a drop spindle which is the primitive tool used to spin yarn. The connection was so strong they named their business Athena Spinning.The Lamberts signed up for a trade show to try selling their travel wheels. They brought six wheels in hopes they might sell one or two. By the end of the show, all six were sold.Today, Mark and Julie Lambert travel the country, selling the Athena travel spinning wheel at fiber festivals from coast to coast. “These wheels are ideal for travelers,” Julie said. The wheel weighs 10 pounds and breaks down into three pieces that nest together and easily fit in a tote bag or overhead luggage. The wheels are eye-catching and attractive, handcrafted from maple and walnut.Julie loved spinning, but she also needed a break from demonstrating it during festivals. She insisted that Mark learn to spin also. He protested, claiming that “It would not give me joy,” but he finally learned to spin. Here's the latest COVID-19 update from Saline County:

As of 5 pm, March 22nd, 2020, Saline County has not had any confirmed positive cases of COVID-19. When a positive case is identified in Saline County, the Saline County Health Department will be the only official source to release that information.

Our agencies were informed today of updated guidance from KDHE on testing for COVID-19. In their release, starting Monday, March 23rd they are implementing priorities for testing. Due to the widescale shortages of laboratory supplies, testing of COVID-19 that is done at the KDHE lab will be prioritized for specific Kansas patients under investigation. KDHE stated that all other specimens that don’t meet their criteria will not be tested. The testing priorities are set out as such:

• Testing for healthcare workers and first responders who have COVID-19 symptoms.

• Testing for potential clusters of unknown respiratory illness, with priority given to longterm care facilities and healthcare facilities.

• Testing of hospitalized patients with no alternative diagnosis.

• Testing of individuals over the age of 60 who have symptoms of COVID-19 with priority given to people who reside in a nursing home, long-term care facility, or other congregate settings.

• Testing individuals with underlying health conditions that would be treated differently if they were infected with COVID-19.

Any tests that were sent to the KDHE labs prior to March 23rd, will still be tested. KDHE directed healthcare providers to inform patients who present with symptoms compatible with COVID-19 (those with a measured fever of 100.4 (F) or greater and lower respiratory symptoms including cough or shortness of breath) and who are not a high priority for testing, should selfisolate at home or another appropriate location until after resolution of fever and significant improvement in symptoms. This self-isolation could be necessary for 14 days.

Testing swabs are in very short supply across Kansas and the United States. People have been tested in Saline County, but all results have been negative so far. This is not to say that there isn’t a potential positive case in our community. Our agencies are well aware of that potential and can only hope that if a person in our community believes they are positive for COVID-19 that they are self-isolated, monitoring their symptoms and communicating with their healthcare provider.

We need everyone to understand that well people will not be tested. A well person’s results will be negative. We cannot overwhelm the healthcare system, such as the ER and health clinics as they need to be able to care for those that are the sickest. We cannot overwhelm the laboratories with thousands of tests which would significantly delay diagnosing those that are infected. And most importantly, a negative test today does not ensure that you will not be exposed and not be able to be infected later. If travel is not necessary, please stay at home.

This situation continues to change rapidly with the number of cases of COVID-19 in Kansas that is growing each day. Governor Kelly signed two Executive Orders and additional guidance documents were released:

• Executive Oder 20-08 temporarily expands telemedicine allowing for physicians to see patients virtually.

• Executive Order 20-09 provides temporary relief from some motor carrier rules.

• Guidance for workers who visit homes.

• Guidance for supporting families in accessing safe and healthy child care.

We cannot stress enough the importance of preventing the spread of diseases by:

Latest county update: No confirmed cases of COVID-19

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.&nbsp;(AP) — Human remains found in Florida are believed to be those of a Colorado boy reported missing in January by his stepmother, who was later arrested and charged with killing him, authorities said Friday.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said the remains of 11-year-old Gannon Stauch were found in Pace, on the Florida Panhandle. Investigators are asking for information from anyone who saw the boy's stepmother, Letecia Stauch, in Pace or nearby Pensacola between Feb. 3 and Feb. 5.

Stauch reported Gannon missing Jan. 27, saying he never returned to his Colorado Springs home after leaving to go to a friend’s house. Authorities initially called him a runaway but three days later said he was considered missing and endangered due to his age, the amount of time he had been gone and his dependence on medication. After a search that lasted for weeks came up empty, investigators presumed the boy was dead and arrested the stepmother in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina&nbsp;on March 2.

She is being represented by the state public defender’s office, which does not comment on cases.

Stauch was brought back to Colorado and charged with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, tampering with a body and tampering with physical evidence. FBI Denver special agent Dean Phillips has said “all evidence points to the disappearance of Gannon being foul play.”

Upon her return trip to Colorado, Stauch was held overnight March 4, in the Saline County Kansas jail, according to online booking records.

A judge sealed the sworn statement that explains the reason for Stauch's arrest, and investigators and prosecutors have declined to discuss the details of the case. News organizations, including The Associated Press, are suing for the release of the document.
