Crimestoppers of Dickinson County seeks tips about burglary

Saline County issued the following statement Wednesday evening concerning additional confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the county.

The Saline County Health Department has been notified of two additional positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Saline County. The positive cases were identified through testing sent to a private lab and to the KDHE lab.

One case is a female in her 60’s. The other case is a male in his 60’s. These cases are not related. Both cases are not associated with known close contacts or travel to hot spot areas. Due to HIPAA, no other patient information will be released. Both individuals are under the care of medical staff at Salina Regional Health Center.

The Saline County Health Department is working to identify any close contacts of these individuals. Those that were exposed will be contacted by the Saline County Health Department as soon as possible.

As stated many times before, this is a rapidly changing situation. Governor Kelly’s Stay-atHome Order is in effect until April 19th. UPDATE: County 'working through' more positive COVID-19 cases

If you've already started planting this spring, you might want to cover your gardens before Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, much colder air will overspread central and eastern Kansas Friday night into Saturday morning. This could result in a hard freeze across portions of central Kansas with lows in the upper 20s. 

The sub-freezing temperatures could be detrimental to some outdoor plants and flowers, NWS noted.

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois reminds Saline County residents that second-half real estate and personal property taxes are due by May 10.

Police are looking for the person who stole a $550 bike from a west Salina residence in mid-March.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, sometime between March 10-17, someone entered a residence in the 900 block of Maple Avenue and stole a black Mirraco Gambino BMX style bicycle with gold rims and sprockets. The bicycle has stickers with the initials “BL” on it and the sidewalls of the tires have “Odyssey” in yellow.

There were no signs of forced entry, however, on the date the owner believes the burglary may have occurred, a window was left open, Forrester noted.

The bicycle was valued at $550, he added.

I will never forget the day this “all started” on March 11. Me and some of my fraternity brothers were making our way back to Kansas after spending spring break skiing in Colorado and visiting Utah. We were headed back early because, at that time, it was only a rumor that Kansas State University would be moving instruction to online only. That night we were in our hotel room when a Utah Jazz player tested positive for COVID-19 or the coronavirus. The NBA suspended the entire season. As avid sports fans who follow the NBA, we knew this was becoming an increasingly serious situation. Earlier that day the World Health Organization declared the virus a pandemic.

The next morning we woke up to K-State announcing classes would be online until further notice. We sat in complete silence as we realized our lives were quickly being turned upside down. The seven-hour drive back to Kansas was largely silent. As more news rolled in, events around the nation were canceled including the entire NCAA tournament. We arrived in Manhattan and parted ways. We didn’t know it then, but that was the last moment we would all have together possibly until August. The next day, K-State announced the remainder of our semester would be conducted online. Our lives came to a complete stop.

All of this has been hard to take in for everyone. No matter who you are, in some way you have been affected by this pandemic. Personally, it has been very hard. I thrive on working with others and being around people constantly. That all changed in a matter of days.Many of us have given up a lot. Graduations cancelled or postponed, intramural championships never to be played. Spending time with people we considered to be family, those memories you make in college, all stripped away in a matter of hours.

The hardest part for many of us is that we have no control over any of this. The feeling of helplessness and complete loss is hitting college students around the country. But we all understand why. The best thing all of us can do is stay home to protect the ones we love. We understand although we might not be at risk if we get this virus, we absolutely understand the threat it poses to many of our family members and those we love.

That’s helped me realize this is so much bigger than any of the things I am losing over the next few months.

But, amidst all of this, we all have things to be thankful for. Every day I must remind myself that although this is insanely hard, everyone else is in the same boat. Yes, that boat at times seems like it is sinking and on fire simultaneously, but we are all a part of it.

These last few days have been trying moments and tough times for our state and nation. How we act now will forever go down in history. We should choose to work together, be there for our neighbors, and show the compassion and caring we Kansans are so proud of.I have seen light in all of this that should give us all hope. People around the state are coming together to support each other when we need it most. Although we may not be able to give each other hugs, we can still show the compassion we have through one another in various ways. That all starts by staying home, only buying what we need and supporting local businesses in any way we can while maintaining the health and safety of our communities.My hope is when this pandemic ends — and it will end — we are all able to cherish the moments we have with the ones we care about the most. Because you never know when life as you know it might come to a screeching halt.

As more news rolled in, events around the nation were canceled including the entire NCAA tournament. We arrived in Manhattan and parted ways. We didn’t know it then, but that was the last moment we would all have together possibly until August. The next day, K-State announced the remainder of our semester would be conducted online. Our lives came to a complete stop.All of this has been hard to take in for everyone. No matter who you are, in some way you have been affected by this pandemic. Personally, it has been very hard. I thrive on working with others and being around people constantly. That all changed in a matter of days.Many of us have given up a lot. Graduations cancelled or postponed, intramural championships never to be played. Spending time with people we considered to be family, those memories you make in college, all stripped away in a matter of hours.The hardest part for many of us is that we have no control over any of this. The feeling of helplessness and complete loss is hitting college students around the country. But we all understand why. The best thing all of us can do is stay home to protect the ones we love. We understand although we might not be at risk if we get this virus, we absolutely understand the threat it poses to many of our family members and those we love.That’s helped me realize this is so much bigger than any of the things I am losing over the next few months.But, amidst all of this, we all have things to be thankful for. Every day I must remind myself that although this is insanely hard, everyone else is in the same boat. Yes, that boat at times seems like it is sinking and on fire simultaneously, but we are all a part of it.These last few days have been trying moments and tough times for our state and nation. How we act now will forever go down in history. We should choose to work together, be there for our neighbors, and show the compassion and caring we Kansans are so proud of.I have seen light in all of this that should give us all hope. People around the state are coming together to support each other when we need it most. Although we may not be able to give each other hugs, we can still show the compassion we have through one another in various ways. That all starts by staying home, only buying what we need and supporting local businesses in any way we can while maintaining the health and safety of our communities.My hope is when this pandemic ends — and it will end — we are all able to cherish the moments we have with the ones we care about the most. Abilene's Sleichter selected for Blue Key at KSU

MANHATTAN – In many landscapes, crabgrass is considered an ‘opportunistic’ plant. Given the chance to take over thin or bare lawns, it is a more-than-willing intruder.

Crabgrass typically grows in ungainly clumps, crowding out more desirable and aesthetically pleasing grasses like the fescues, Bermuda and zoysia.

Ward Upham, a K-State Research and Extension specialist in horticulture, said the best time to rid home lawns of crabgrass is mid- to late-April, “though early April would be more appropriate for southern Kansas,” he said.

“For most of Kansas, crabgrass typically begins to germinate around May 1 or a little later,” Upham said. “April 15 is normally a good target date for applying preventer for most of Kansas because it gives active ingredients time to evenly disperse in the soil before crabgrass germination starts.”

Crabgrass preventers, he added, are just as their name suggests – they prevent the young plant from emerging. “With few exceptions, they have no effect on existing crabgrass plants, so they must be applied before germination,” Upham said.

Most crabgrass preventers are ineffective after 60 days, Upham noted, so applying the product at the right time is important.

“You can base timing of your application on the bloom of ornamental plants, such as the Eastern Redbud tree,” Upham said. “When the trees in your area reach full bloom, apply crabgrass preventer. This practice is better than using a calendar date as it compensates for location and whether we have an early spring.”

Depending on the product used, a follow-up application may be needed. Dimension and Barricade are the only two products that give season-long control of crabgrass from a single application, and in fact, can be applied earlier than April 15, according to Upham.

“We recommend crabgrass preventers be applied before fertilizer so that the grass isn’t encouraged to put on too much growth too early,” Upham said. “However, it may be difficult to find products that contain pre-emergents without fertilizer.”

The USD 305 Board of Education approved a number of items as a result of COVID-19 and the closing of school buildings for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. 

The board approved the district’s Continuous Learning Plan which ensures continued learning for students in spite of the closure of the district's school buildings.&nbsp; For this year, credits required to graduate are suspended and the requirement for 2020 seniors is changed from 24 to 21 credits.

·forgiveness for outstanding fees and outstanding meal account balances in an effort to help families.

·compensation for on-call daily substitutes for the remainder of the school year.

USD 305 board OKs COVID-19 related items

MCPHERSON -- McPherson County late this afternoon announced that two more cases of COVID-19 had been confirmed in the county.

According to a news release from the county health officer, the two most recently confirmed cases are a woman in her 40s and a woman in her 50s. Those cases bring the total number of confirmed cases in McPherson County to five, the release noted.

Saline County COVID-19 update for March 31

For the safety of inmates, staff and public – the lobbies at the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and jail will be closed for the duration of the county and state stay-at-home orders. 

Minimum staffing of records employees are on duty to take calls and process the required paperwork from the courts and attorneys for the office.

For the current time we are suspending VIN inspections, fingerprinting, drug take-back, sharps collection, and applications for concealed carry permits.

Registered Offenders who are required to register at the Saline County Sheriff’s Office must now call to schedule an appointment. Sheriff's office updates closing to include jail lobby

Eagle Radio-Salina's own Devin Hanney is the 2020 recipient of the Kansas Association of Broadcaster's Hod Humiston Award for Sports Broadcasting!

Hanney is sports director for Salina’s KINA (910 AM and 107.5 FM).

According to KAB, the Hod Humiston Award is given annually to a Kansas broadcaster who has made significant contributions to the field of sports broadcasting as well as work in the community. 

"To receive the news from Jerry Hinrikus, who I consider one of my radio mentors, was really cool and honestly unexpected," Hanney told Salina Post. "The Hod Humiston Award has always been on my list of goals. I grew up listening to many of the voices that have received this award and it is a little overwhelming looking at the talent listed. I haven't really processed the recognition fully yet, but I think it's pretty awesome!"

The award is named for Hod Humiston who was the first television sportscaster in Kansas when he did play-by-play coverage of college games for KTVH (now KWCH TV, in Wichita. Humiston was founder and a co-owner of KSKU radio and was also employed as an announcer for

KWBW and KWHK radio stations in Hutchinson. He was instrumental in bringing the national junior college basketball tournament to Hutchinson, where it has been since 1949. 

Hanney, a graduate of Chapman High School, has worked in sports broadcasting since 1994 when he began at Cloud County Community College student radio station KVCO, calling basketball games. He also began broadcasting high school sports during this time period, calling volleyball, basketball, and wrestling for Concordia High School.

After earning his degree at Cloud County, Hanney went on to work in the Abilene area for EBC, Inc., broadcasting area high school sports from 1997 through 2009. During this time period, Hanney called Abilene High School games and hosted weekly coaching shows featuring Dickinson County coaches on KABI 1560, announced the game of the week on KSAJ 98.5, and broadcast a daily sports update on both radio stations.

In 2009, Hanney became the voice of Southeast of Saline High School for the Rocking M Network on KVOB-FM 95.5 and helped with coverage for Bethany College and Salina High School South for KDMJ 101.7 and KZUH 92.7.

Since 2011, he has called Southeast of Saline High School athletics for Eagle Communications’ KINA.

In 2019, Hanney was the recipient of the Kansas State High School Activities Association's Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award.
