The difficult decision to cancel the tournament was made because of the economic impact COVID-19 may have on our community. They absolutely plan to continue hosting the tournament again in 2021, and hope that the supporters will continue to be a part of it. Dickinson County support groups canceled for now

MANHATTAN – Home gardeners with an eye on being the envy of their neighbors in early July will have an opportunity in a few weeks to get a jump start on planting tomatoes.

Ward Upham, a horticulture specialist at Kansas State University, said that early May is the first chance in some parts of Kansas to get tomato plants in the ground, though it can be a risky venture.

“Tomatoes need a soil temperature of at least 55 degrees to do well,” Upham said. “And plants must be protected from frost.”

Both challenges can be overcome, he said, but both require some planning.

“Plastic mulch is most commonly used to warm the soil,” Upham said. “Allow for several days after laying plastic mulch for the soil temperature to reach at least 55 degrees. Check the soil temperature 2 1/2 inches deep at about 11 a.m., if possible, or check it before leaving for work and again when you return and use the average of the two.”

To protect plants from a late frost, Upham suggested placing hot caps or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB5Qa4grFDE" target="_blank">water teepees</a>, two types of protective cones that fit over the young plants. “Eventually the plants will outgrow the cover and start to develop flowers,” he said.

Upham noted that gardeners in the southern part of Kansas can get a head start on tomatoes beginning May 1, while those in the central part can plant on May 10 and those further north by May 15.

Doing so, he noted, would likely produce beautiful, fresh tomatoes by early July.

“If gardeners in central Kansas harvest tomatoes by the Fourth of July, they brag, except for cherry tomatoes,” Upham said. “Usually about mid-July is the normal time in that part of the state.”

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticultural Newsletter with tips for keeping yards healthy and beautiful year-round. The newsletter is&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html" target="_blank">available to view online</a>; interested persons can also subscribe to have it delivered by email each week.

Today in History -- April 3

WICHITA, Kansas — Floods, tornadoes and other 
natural disasters raked across the plains of Kansas long before this 
latest pandemic swirled invisibly around the globe.

And no amount of hunkering down in this <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23AloneTogether&amp;src=typeahead_click" target="_blank">#AloneTogether</a> period will ward off storm systems or the chaos they rain down.

To deal with that reality in this year of <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html" target="_blank">COVID-19</a>, emergency response managers at the federal, <a href="http://www.kansastag.gov/kdem_default.asp" target="_blank">state</a> and <a href="https://www.kema.org/board" target="_blank">county levels </a>are retooling how they’ll act when disaster strikes.

Help
 that would have been just a few key phone calls and emails away is busy
 dealing with its own problems in response to a crisis likely to linger 
at least for months.

That leaves the people paid to help 
communities brace for a deluge or recover from a twister more isolated. 
Not only do they have to deal with the new coronavirus that’s upended 
the world, but with the periodic disasters they're accustomed to 
preparing for.

While responders might be skilled in building a 
barrier out of sandbags or setting up temporary shelters for people with
 no place to go, making sure those shelters aren’t a perfect place for 
the virus to spread is a whole new challenge.

“I’m not sure we’ve ever trained for something just like this,” said Josh Murray, regional communications director for the <a href="https://www.redcross.org/local/kansas.html" target="_blank">American Red Cross</a>.
 “Hopefully, we don’t have any storms or major disasters that we have to
 deal with right away. But we know that that’s very possible and we’re 
doing everything we can to be ready.”

The <a href="https://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/" target="_blank">Army Corps of Engineers’ regional offices in Kansas City</a>
 have a ghost town feel these days. Like so many Kansans, the federal 
workers at the massive agency work from home, preparing, as usual, for 
the worst.

“The main thing right now is keeping our employees, 
our staff, healthy so if we do get into an event, we’re able to 
respond,” said Mike Dulin, an emergency management specialist with the 
Kansas City District of the Corps.

Across the Great Plains, that most likely means rivers busting from their banks and <a href="https://www.weather.gov/ddc/greensburgfiveyear" target="_blank">tornadoes ripping across the landscape</a>.

Typical
 training sessions that in prior years would happen in person now take 
place virtually through meetings over the Zoom app and conference phone 
calls.

“If we do get into a flood event, I think a lot of folks 
are going to be familiar with that virtual support already because we’re
 doing it as part of our daily routine now,” Dulin said.

In the 
event of a disaster, the material goods such as sandbags for flood 
barriers and equipment to clean up after a tornado are already in place.
 The problem is getting those to the impacted areas and protecting the 
responders who have to show up, pandemic or not.

“How do I keep 
them healthy, how do I mitigate the risk for them and their family,” 
asked Maj. General Lee Tafanelli, the Kansas director of emergency 
management.

One way is through the use of personal protective 
equipment such as face masks and gloves. Yet those supplies are scarce 
enough at hospitals already.

Tafanelli said the state is also 
looking at the ways setting up shelters for people who have to evacuate 
or have lost their homes would be different.

In Atchison County 
in northeast Kansas, where the Missouri River burst its banks last year,
 emergency management officials said the best-case scenario is not 
needing to open any shelters.

“We don’t want to do that, but if 
there’s a necessity to do so then we would have to do it,” said Wes 
Lanter, director of emergency management for Atchison County.

But it’s hard to predict where shelters might be needed. In a major disaster, shelters play a key role in helping the displaced.

To prepare for a time when one might be needed, the Red Cross said 
it’s working on modifying how those shelters would operate. People would
 likely be screened before being allowed in and an isolation area would 
be set up for people exhibiting symptoms of the coronavirus.

There’d be precautions taken inside the shelter, too.

“That
 may be spreading the beds farther apart,” said the Red Cross’ Murray. 
“That may be staggering meal times so people aren’t all sitting at a 
table at the same time.”

He said it’s likely county officials 
would need to find multiple locations for shelters&nbsp; as separation 
guidelines would mean fewer people could be housed in each one.

Finding and training volunteers would also be a challenge.

The
 Red Cross often gets supplies and volunteers from outside of the 
disaster area. But right now, the first disaster is coronavirus, and 
that’s impacting people nationwide. People who would normally travel to 
help out after a tornado, flood, or hurricane won’t be available.

Murray
 said even though the Red Cross and many of its volunteers are 
experienced at responding to disasters, this is unlike anything he’s 
ever seen.

“It would be a new experience,” he said, “and 
something that we’d have to do a lot of training and really go over how 
this is going to work.”

it’s working on modifying how those shelters would operate. People would
 likely be screened before being allowed in and an isolation area would 
be set up for people exhibiting symptoms of the coronavirus.There’d be precautions taken inside the shelter, too.“That
 may be spreading the beds farther apart,” said the Red Cross’ Murray. 
“That may be staggering meal times so people aren’t all sitting at a 
table at the same time.”He said it’s likely county officials 
would need to find multiple locations for shelters&nbsp; as separation 
guidelines would mean fewer people could be housed in each one.Finding and training volunteers would also be a challenge.The
 Red Cross often gets supplies and volunteers from outside of the 
disaster area. But right now, the first disaster is coronavirus, and 
that’s impacting people nationwide. People who would normally travel to 
help out after a tornado, flood, or hurricane won’t be available.Murray
 said even though the Red Cross and many of its volunteers are 
experienced at responding to disasters, this is unlike anything he’s 
ever seen.“It would be a new experience,” he said, “and 
something that we’d have to do a lot of training and really go over how

Jewell County reports first confirmed case of COVID-19

Due to evidence of community transmission within Saline County, Salina Regional Health Center has announced it will go to a “no visitor policy” effective Monday. 

For most patients, that will mean no visitors are allowed. Exceptions to this include:

· One caregiver for patients younger than 18. (Caregiver will accompany that patient and remain in the patient’s room with them for the entire duration of their stay.)

· One companion for labor and delivery patients. (The Companion will accompany that patient and remain in the patient’s room with them for the entire duration of their stay.)

· One support person for patients with disabilities or impairments needing assistance

·One support person or driver for patients undergoing essential outpatient treatment or procedures.

In addition, only essential urgent and emergent procedures will be performed at the hospital.

Current visitor restriction and screening policies at SRHC-affiliated clinics will remain in place. Hospital leadership is assessing the rapidly evolving situation daily and will announce any future changes in policy as they are made.

Lindsborg Community Hospital and Cloud County Health Center are each reviewing their own community’s transmission at this time and will make adjustments to their visitor restrictions as deemed necessary for their community.

Patients and families are encouraged to utilize electronic means to communicate with one another such as Zoom, Skype, Facetime and other social media sites. Guest WiFi is available throughout the hospital.

“Most models anticipate that we could reach our peak at the end of April. The precautions we take during these next three weeks are more important than even the steps we’ve implemented to this point. It is also imperative that everyone continue to maintain social distance, was their hands frequently, and isolate themselves if they’re sick. All of us must take necessary measures now to slow the spread,” said Joel Phelps, Chief Executive Officer for Salina Regional Health Center.

SRHC announces no visitor policy

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Jeffrey G.&nbsp;Killgore, 56, El Dorado, was&nbsp; northbound&nbsp; on Interstate 135 one mile north of Moundridge.

The driver stopped on the right hand shoulder to assist a non-injured driver who had struck the guardrail.

A 2010 Toyota Tundra driven by Sergio R. Moreno, 41, Wichita,&nbsp;&nbsp;struck Killgore as the Toyota was entering the scene.

Killgore was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Sedgwick County Coroner's Office.&nbsp;

EMS transported Moreno to a Wichita hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

UPDATE: Northbound Interstate 135 near Moundridge has been reopened following a fatality accident this morning, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

SPD: Stay-at-home enforcement procedures

Although this year's Match Madness looked different due to COVID-19, more than $291,000 was raised for 74 nonprofit organizations through donations and bonus prizes in just 24 hours on March 19.

“I continue to be amazed by our community's generosity, but, this year in particular, I am humbled by the many people that still stepped up to the plate to give during this pandemic,” said Jessica Martin, president and executive director of the foundation.

A total of 582 unique donors contributed $283,968 through 1,621 gifts. Because the event was held virtually this year, donors primarily made gifts online or by mail. All gifts were matched at 50 percent by the foundation. Together, Match Madness donations, bonus prizes, and matching funds combined for a total benefit of $423,783 for the Salina community.

“Now more than ever, our nonprofits need support so that they can continue to impact lives and make our community stronger,” Martin said. “Thank you to everyone for doing their part!”

While the in-person event was originally slated to include the Bill Grevas Memorial Free Throw Contest and the new BE Wealth Half-Court Shot for Charity, the re-tooled virtual Match Madness event still included basketball, competition, and prizes.&nbsp;

The foundation worked with Match Madness sponsors to host a nonprofit Pop-A-Shot tournament, which was broadcast live on Facebook throughout the day. Pop-A-Shot donated a customized Match Madness unit for the occasion. All 74 participating charities were placed in a bracket, and foundation staff and special guests were randomly assigned to play Pop-A-Shot on behalf of each organization. Sacred Heart Jr. Sr. High School emerged as the champion and received a $1,000 prize from BE Wealth.&nbsp;

Additionally, the Pop-A-Shot tournament included a community bracket challenge. Participants filled out an online bracket to make their picks, and the challenge winner, Tasha Rice, received her own Pop-A-Shot unit.

Rice was grateful for the Pop-A-Shot prize.

“[This was] a bright moment to our really dull week,” Rice said. “The event was pretty fun to watch throughout the day. Thank you for making it still work!”

Anyone who donated to Match Madness by 6 p.m. was also entered into a drawing for a Pop-A-Shot, and Ryan and Sheila Douglas were the winners.

Each organization who signed up to participate in the Bill Grevas Memorial Free Throw Contest received a $70 consolation prize, thanks to sponsor Salina Regional Health Foundation.

Match Madness raises more than $291,000

Salina police are investigating the theft of a portable toilet trailer from a local business earlier this week.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, sometime between 11 a.m. Tuesday and 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, someone stole a Poly John single portable toilet trailer from Salina Septic Services, 200 East Pacific Avenue. 

The trailer is silver in color and valued at $1,200, he noted. Whoever stole the trailer removed the portable toilet from it before leaving with the trailer, he explained.

A local florist was injured during a robbery Wednesday afternoon in downtown Salina.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, officers were sent to the Flower Nook, 208 West Iron Avenue, at approximately 3 p.m.&nbsp; for the report of a stolen vehicle. Owner Wayne DeBey reported that he was working in the store and was alerted to someone being inside the business garage, which is attached to the back of the business, Forrester noted. DeBey entered the garage and observed a subject inside a work vehicle, a 2011 Honda Element, Forrester explained. 

"DeBey was able to get the keys from the vehicle and attempted to go back into the business," Forrester noted in a media release. "The subject began hitting DeBey in the head causing injuries to DeBey.  DeBey gave the keys to the individual and was allowed to enter the business."

According to Forrester, DeBey suffered a laceration on his face that did not require stitches.

The subject got into the vehicle, backed out of the garage, and was last seen driving westbound on Iron Avenue, Forrester noted. The vehicle had a Kansas license plate of 582KZP, he added.

The Honda Element is valued at $11,000 and has the Flower Nook name and numerous yellow flowers on the outside of it, Forrester reported.

While backing out, the subject struck the garage door and a Nissan Xterra also owned by DeBey, causing approximately $350 damage to the Xterra and $1,000 damage to the door, Forrester noted.

According to Forrester, a possible suspect has been identified as DeBey was able to take a picture of the subject inside the vehicle.  The subject was described as being a white male, 29 years of age, 5’10” and 177 pounds, Forrester noted.

A fourth positive case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Saline County. Following is a statement from the county.

The Saline County Health Department has been notified another positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Saline County. The case was identified through testing sent to a private lab.

This is the 4th case in Saline County.

The case is a male in his 30’s. This case is not associated with known close contacts or travel to hot spot areas. Due to HIPAA, no other patient information will be released. The individual is self-quarantined at home.

The Saline County Health Department is working to identify any close contacts of the individual.

Those that were exposed will be contacted by the Saline County Health Department as soon as possible.

Due to the rapid increase of positive cases across the State, we will not be issuing separate press releases for additional cases in Saline County. That information will be included in our daily press releases from now on.

Saline County: 4th positive case of COVID-19 confirmed

Despite rumors to the contrary, no decision has been made to close Salina's Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park for the summer.

Jeff Hammond, deputy parks and recreation director, told Salina Post this morning that there was a miscommunication that Kenwood Cove was closed for the 2020 season.

"There are conversations and discussion about modifying or canceling Kenwood Cove and other Parks and Recreation summer programming. It is only being discussed at this time as a possibility if the stay at home order were extended," Hammond told Salina Post.

No decision yet to close Kenwood Cove for the year

Salina Public Schools today announced the selection of Charles A. Kipp as the South High School principal effective July 1, 2020.

Kipp has been an educator for 15 years, most recently serving as lead associate principal at USD 457 Garden City High School since 2013. He taught language arts, coached boys and girls tennis, led the professional learning community and served on many committees at USD 383, Manhattan/Ogden, for eight years prior.

In the business sector, Kipp spent nine years as graphic design and marketing coordinator for Kansas Farm Bureau Services, Inc.

Kipp earned his bachelor’s degree in English literature/creative writing from Kansas State University and a secondary education license from Washburn University. He earned his doctoral degree from Kansas State University.

Curtis Stevens, currently principal at South High school, accepted the position of director of secondary education at the USD 305 district office.

Salina Area United Way (SAUW) has begun awarding funds from its recently created&nbsp;COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

SAUW announced the creation of the fund on March 23. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, businesses and organizations, SAUW has raised a total of $53,855 for the fund to provide assistance to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, groups fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, or other charitable organizations able to receive a tax-deductible contribution, such as schools, faith-based organizations, and other public entities, according to information from SAUW.

SAUW has awarded the following grants from the fund:

Saline County Department of Senior Services (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to provide dry food commodities and daily essentials such as soaps, toilet paper, and other needed items to seniors.

St John’s Missionary Baptist&nbsp;Church (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to provide supper to youth and seniors.

Twin Valley Education Foundation (Bennington)&nbsp;- $2,500 to provide food, rent or utilities, health needs such as insurance coverage, and educational needs such as internet services.

Solomon Valley Community Foundation (Mitchell County, Beloit)&nbsp;- $500 to create a program for Buy One Get One, where local gift card purchases will be matched with gift cards for grocery assistance for local families in need.

Post Rock Family Services &amp; St John Lutheran Church (Russell)&nbsp;- $2,000 to provide meals to youth

Communities in Schools of Mid-America (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to provide basic needs, food, and educational material via technology to students and families at Lakewood Middle School and Central High School.
