The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salina has announced a gathering for Wednesday evening.

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at 901 Beatrice. The group plans to "stand in solidarity with all peoples and to call on our leaders to act on Universal, Uniting Principles to guide our nation and world toward harmony and peaceful dialogue crucial to our very survival," according to information released Tuesday.

The group also released the following statement.

Our country’s leadership should not use faith, the very thing that unites us, to divide us. At the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salina, not all of us have the same faith traditions. Not all of us have the same beliefs. But we hold common principles. Principles that we believe should be common goals for our people, our community, and our leaders.

We, at the fellowship, call for action and stand in solidarity with the people of Salina, regardless of faith, upbringing, or identity, in order to work toward change based on respect for the people and the planet on which we live.  The seven principles we strive for, and urge our government to strive for, are these:

• 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

• 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

• 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;

Two more earthquakes rattled parts of Saline and Dickinson counties in the past few days.

A 2.5 magnitude quake struck southeast of Salina at 12:58 p.m. Sunday. It was centered just a bit southeast of the intersection of South Simpson Road and East Farrelly Road.

On Monday at 8:52 p.m., a 2.1 magnitude quake struck western Dickinson County, just east of Solomon. It was centered just south of Old 40 and east of Camp Road.

MCPHERSON -- Five new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in McPherson County, bringing the total to 38.

Following is information about the cases as released by the McPherson County Health Department.

The first newest positive case is a male under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The second newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The third newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The fourth newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The fifth newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

"The five new cases are household members of a positive case related to a cluster at a private company in McPherson County. Facilitywide testing is taking place to identify any asymptomatic carriers. This private company does not have general public access; therefore, the location will not be released. Staff at this company have been contacted and are aware of the situation. Let this serve as a reminder that COVID-19 is still present in our communities, so please stay home if you are ill and maintain your distance when you are around others," the health department noted.

Of the 38 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in McPherson County, 26 cases have now met recovery guidelines set forth by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and one case remains hospitalized, the health department reported.

The CityGo stop at Sunset Plaza, serving the Purple and Green routes as a transfer station, is closed temporarily.&nbsp;

GYPSUM -- The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted burglary at a residence in Gypsum and the theft of a wallet from a nearby vehicle.

Late Monday afternoon, Joseph Murdoch, 25, of Gypsum, reported that someone had stolen his wallet from his vehicle that was parked at his residence in the southwest part of Gypsum, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The vehicle's door was slightly damaged, he said. The wallet contained $130 in cash, Soldan added. 

Additionally, someone had attempted to break into Murdoch's residence, Soldan said.

According to Soldan, a neighbor had called Murdoch around 8 a.m. Monday to tell him that a woman was attempting to climb in his front window, however, she did not gain access to the residence. A damaged window screen was found on the front porch of the residence, Soldan said. Murdoch was home at the time of the attempted break-in, he added. 

Additionally, the neighbor reported seeing a large male with brown hair and a stocky built female leaving the area in a silver four-door Mercury Sable, he said. Both were described as being white and in their 20s, Soldan added.

Murdoch did not report the incident to the sheriff's office until later in the day because he didn't discover that his wallet had been stolen until later in the day, Soldan said.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles on west-east oriented roads.

People should avoid being outside around trees and branches and avoid windows when inside. Use caution if you must drive.

While most of us were watching last week to see just how much authority the Kansas Legislature would hand the governor to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, there are six candidates who are probably wondering just what that new job they are campaigning for is going to look like now that the Legislature has handed them the authority to close – or not -- schools at the request of the governor.

The governor, recall, on March 17 ordered public and private schools statewide closed to conventional classroom operations to avoid spread of COVID-19 among students, teachers, staffers and everyone else in the K-12 world.

Students stayed home, studied by conference call, by Internet app, by letters sent from their teachers to their homes. Everything changed by the governor’s order.

And, probably the spread of coronavirus slowed, children and their parents and grandparents stayed healthier, but it was a major change in lifestyle for most of us.

That new diversion of power from the governor to the State Board of Education occurred just after the filing deadline for the two contested seats on the State Board.

The State Board, a 10-member panel, each district made up of four Kansas Senate districts, will see just half of its membership up for election or re-election this year, and of those five seats on the ballot, only two have primary and general elections for the posts.

And, those six candidates are likely to have to put forth some position on whether they could vote to close down schools, or keep them open if they don’t believe that a new coronavirus outbreak this fall, or next winter, will be a health hazard to students and staffers. And…just what sort of regulation they may want to consider stanching the spread of the disease.

Those six candidates? Three from Wichita, three from Overland Park-dominated districts, where closing schools has broad economic effect on businesses and parents of children who either will need some sort of day care or the parents will have to stay home.

With a little luck, school will be fine, the pandemic will cool, and school operations can start as&nbsp; usual just after the primary elections. And it may be the incumbents who, if the pandemic restarts, will have to make that tough decision on conventional operation of schools or a shutdown of some sort.

But the job of being a member of the State Board is going to change dramatically with the new authority that was taken from the governor by the Legislature and handed to the board.

And, even for the current members who aren’t on the ballot, you gotta wonder whether they are willing to take the public vote on closing schools or keeping them open.

The water just gets deeper as the pandemic, which appears to be just idling now, ramps up again this summer or fall or winter or is defused by a vaccination that will stop the disease.

It’s just a whole new area of regulation that lawmakers didn’t want the governor deciding. And, it’s likely that legislators aren’t interested in — again, in an election year — deciding by themselves and instead just looking for anyone besides the governor to make the powerful public health/safety/inconvenience decision.

Nope, don’t look for the issue on yard signs, few as there are for candidates for State Board of Education, but look at the issue as it is going to affect everything from care of children to football games to possibly even debate tournaments.

The change in authority probably will refocus some voters on just why they ought to take a look at those down-ballot State Board of Education candidates, and maybe learn a little more about how they want to educate the kids.

DeHaven Scholarship from the National Association of College and University Food Services to continue her goal of becoming an event planner. The scholarship was established by&nbsp;the Clark E. DeHaven Scholarship Trust to honor Clark E. DeHaven, the national association's first executive director. Its purpose is to provide merit scholarships to students at member institutions who are committed to pursuing careers in accredited programs in the food service profession or related areas. Aylward plans to pursue a career in event planning after graduating and hopes to one day own and operate her own event space with an in-house catering facility. "The scholarship will provide opportunities to continue my growth through hospitality experiences and gaining connections within the industry," Aylward said. "The hospitality industry has taught me to work hard and dream big. The rewards will be worth it." K-State students have been awarded nearly $50,000 since the scholarship began in 1992. Solomon's Aylward awarded scholarship from national association

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.&nbsp;(AP) — A&nbsp;Colorado&nbsp;woman accused of killing her 11-year-old stepson and plotting to break out of jail must undergo a competency evaluation to determine her ability to stand trial.

In March, authorities in South Carolina arrested 36-year-old Letecia Stauch, in connection with the disappearance and death of Gannon Stauch, according to El Paso, County Colorado Sheriff Bill Elder.

On her return to face murder charges, Stauch was held overnight in the Saline County Kansas jail.

On Friday, District Judge Gregory Werner granted a defense motion for the evaluation, essentially halting further prosecution of Stauch until she is deemed mentally fit to face trial for the death of Gannon Stauch, The Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

During the hearing, prosecutors also filed a new charge of solicitation to commit escape.

Stauch is accused of telling a fellow inmate about her plans to use a broom handle to break the window in her cell at the El Paso County Jail, and that she had already measured herself to make sure she could fit through, according to a probable cause affidavit dated Monday.

Investigators said they found a note in Stauch’s cell with her daughter’s name on it telling her not to be afraid if media reports emerge that she is no longer in jail or is missing.

The fellow inmate told deputies about the plan and gave them notes from Stauch suggesting that she could pay her to help, according to the affidavit. At least one of the notes was partially written in code.

Stauch is being represented by the state public defender’s office, which does not comment on cases.

She reported Gannon missing Jan. 27, saying he never returned to his Colorado Springs home after leaving to go to a friend’s house.

After a search that lasted for weeks came up empty, investigators presumed the boy was dead and arrested the stepmother in Myrtle Beach,&nbsp;South Carolina, on March 2. Remains tentatively identified as Gannon's were found in the small city of Pace, on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/florida">Florida</a>&nbsp;Panhandle.

Investigators believe Stauch killed Gannon in his basement bedroom with a knife or other weapon a few hours before reporting him missing, then concocted a variety of stories to mislead them.

Evidence of blood was found in Gannon’s bedroom and Stauch’s SUV, according to an arrest affidavit.

The document doesn’t describe a motive, but investigators said that based on Stauch's internet searches, it seems she was unhappily married and resentful of being treated as a babysitter for her stepchildren.

 </figure>COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.&nbsp;(AP) — A&nbsp;Colorado&nbsp;woman accused of killing her 11-year-old stepson and plotting to break out of jail must undergo a competency evaluation to determine her ability to stand trial.In March, authorities in South Carolina arrested 36-year-old Letecia Stauch, in connection with the disappearance and death of Gannon Stauch, according to El Paso, County Colorado Sheriff Bill Elder.On her return to face murder charges, Stauch was held overnight in the Saline County Kansas jail.On Friday, District Judge Gregory Werner granted a defense motion for the evaluation, essentially halting further prosecution of Stauch until she is deemed mentally fit to face trial for the death of Gannon Stauch, The Colorado Springs Gazette reported.During the hearing, prosecutors also filed a new charge of solicitation to commit escape.Stauch is accused of telling a fellow inmate about her plans to use a broom handle to break the window in her cell at the El Paso County Jail, and that she had already measured herself to make sure she could fit through, according to a probable cause affidavit dated Monday.Investigators said they found a note in Stauch’s cell with her daughter’s name on it telling her not to be afraid if media reports emerge that she is no longer in jail or is missing.The fellow inmate told deputies about the plan and gave them notes from Stauch suggesting that she could pay her to help, according to the affidavit. At least one of the notes was partially written in code.Stauch is being represented by the state public defender’s office, which does not comment on cases.She reported Gannon missing Jan. 27, saying he never returned to his Colorado Springs home after leaving to go to a friend’s house.After a search that lasted for weeks came up empty, investigators presumed the boy was dead and arrested the stepmother in Myrtle Beach,&nbsp;South Carolina, on March 2. Remains tentatively identified as Gannon's were found in the small city of Pace, on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/florida">Florida</a>&nbsp;Panhandle.Investigators believe Stauch killed Gannon in his basement bedroom with a knife or other weapon a few hours before reporting him missing, then concocted a variety of stories to mislead them.Evidence of blood was found in Gannon’s bedroom and Stauch’s SUV, according to an arrest affidavit.The document doesn’t describe a motive, but investigators said that based on Stauch's internet searches, it seems she was unhappily married and resentful of being treated as a babysitter for her stepchildren.
