Salina Public Library extending hours it will be open

HOLTON -- In her day-to-day work as an extension agent in northeast Kansas, Jody Holthaus often gets calls from landowners looking for information and solutions for blue-green algae – a phenomenon that renders ponds and lakes unsafe for people and animals. &nbsp;

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, are aquatic organisms that exist naturally in freshwater lakes and ponds but sometimes reproduce rapidly, creating a dense growth called a bloom. The blooms can be toxic.&nbsp;

Cattle deaths have been reported in Kansas this year and the deaths of seven dogs in three states last year were linked to blue-green algae.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The problem often shows up in the heat of summer when a combination of nutrients from farm fields wash into bodies of water, fueling growth of the algae. &nbsp;

“This has been a real problem for me the last few years, with few answers,” Holthaus said.&nbsp;

So she and Extension Watershed Specialist Will Boyer began searching for more information and reaching out to state agencies, including the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. She knew KDHE had been involved in blue-green algae testing on large lakes. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Holthaus, a livestock and natural resources agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Meadowlark District, helped facilitate a roundtable discussion on the topic last fall with KDHE, the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, Kansas watershed specialists, Kansas Department of Agriculture, the Kansas Biological Survey and others. &nbsp;

“We wanted to do some sort of research or demonstration on smaller farm ponds,” Holthaus said. The next step involved setting up a pilot project through a collaboration with the KDHE, partnering with Elizabeth Smith, director of the Bureau of Water. &nbsp;

Using previous studies as a starting point, the project involved placing bales of barley straw at least halfway submerged around the edge of ponds known to previously have had blue-green algae. The earlier work on larger bodies of water indicated that when barley straw decomposes, polyphenols and other chemicals are released that suppress the growth of harmful algal blooms, or HAB.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Barley straw bales used in the study were located in western Kansas and a cooperative project was started with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and K-State Research and Extension. It involves eight privately-owned ponds stretching across Jackson, Jefferson, Nemaha, Shawnee and Greenwood counties. The ponds range from one-half to three acres. &nbsp;

Holthaus said researchers have found that the compounds resulting from the decomposing barley straw will not kill existing blooms but can suppress growth of new ones. &nbsp;

KDHE is testing the water in the eight ponds monthly until October to monitor nutrients and other components that contribute to blooms and to learn how water turnover (dilution), algal species present in the pond and other factors affect success in suppressing the algae’s growth. &nbsp;

“So far the results appear to be promising,” Holthaus said, “but we’ll have to rely on the scientific data analysis to know for sure. Meanwhile, a local producer of barley straw has been located for future study.”&nbsp;

K-State teams with state agencies to seek solutions to blue-green algae

A traffic stop-turned-pursuit ended in the arrest of two people in north Salina Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 4:40 p.m., an officer spotted a light blue 1998 Ford Taurus turning north onto Broadway Boulevard from North 12th Street with only one operational brake light, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the Taurus sped away from the officer, so a pursuit was initiated, he explained.

According to Forrester, the Taurus traveled into oncoming traffic and went around numerous vehicles at the intersection of North Ninth Street and Broadway Boulevard at speeds near 50 mph. The vehicle attempted to turn south on North Fourth Street, but struck the curb, went up into the grass, and struck some limestone rocks at R and L Motors, 304 East Pacific Avenue, disabling the vehicle, Forrester noted. 

The driver, identified as Kevin Russell, 36, of Salina, fled on foot, however, a witness told police that Russell ran into the back yard of 812 North Fifth Street, Forrester reported. Officers located Russell hiding in a detached garage and he was taken into custody, Forrester added. Russell was found to have outstanding felony warrants from from the Kansas Department of Corrections, was a parole absconder, and had a suspended driver’s license, according to Forrester. 

The front passenger identified as Heather Easter, 29, of Salina, also fled on foot, but was apprehended by a citizen and taken into custody by police in the 300 block of East Pacific Avenue, he noted. Another passenger was cooperative and was released at the scene, Forrester added.

Russell was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester reported.

Forrester noted that Easter was charged with interference with a law enforcement officer.

Two people arrested in north Salina after traffic stop turns into pursuit

Police are looking for a person of interest after a vehicle with four occupants was shot at in central Salina early this morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that at approximately 12:10 a.m. Wednesday a 2010 Pontiac G6 with four people ranging in age from 17 to 22 in it was stopped at the intersection of West Beloit Avenue and South Ninth Street when a blue Honda Accord and a tan Chevy Trailblazer drove in front of it to block it from leaving the intersection.

The 18-year-old female driver was able to maneuver the Pontiac around the vehicles and then drove north on South Ninth Street, Forrester explained. As the car was driving north, the occupants heard a gunshot, he added. The 17-year-old male in the car reported that he heard heard a male subject from one of the other vehicles tell them to get out of the car and then saw him shoot at the Pontiac, Forrester noted.

According to Forrester the Pontiac had a single bullet hole in the rear driver side quarter panel. Officers located a shell casing at the intersection of West Beloit Avenue and South Ninth Street, he added.

Forrester reported that the incident is not believed to be a random act and that a person of interest has been developed in the case. The investigation is ongoing, he noted.

Salina police looking for person of interest in early morning shooting

MANHATTAN – For many Kansas garden crops, timing is everything.&nbsp;

That can be especially true for certain tree fruits and vegetables this time of year, according to Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham, who said knowing when to harvest crops is a key to enjoying them later.&nbsp;

Upham said apples mature over a long period of time depending on the variety. “Some varieties, such as Lodi, can mature in July, while others mature as late as October or even November,” he said.&nbsp;

Some tips for knowing when to pick apples include:&nbsp;

Days from bloom.&nbsp;For some common varieties, the number of days after the tree blooms to when the apples should be ready include: Jonathan, 135; Delicious, 145; Golden Delicious, 145; and Winesap, 155. Weather conditions may influence those guidelines.

Flesh color.&nbsp;As apples mature and starches change to sugars, the flesh changes from very light green to white. Cut a thin slice and hold it to light to determine if the flesh is white.

Seed color.&nbsp;The seeds of most apples change from light green to brown as the fruit ripens. This indicator should be combined with other changes.

Color change.&nbsp;As apples mature, the skin color in the areas of the stem and the bottom of the apple turns from immature green to a light-yellow color. Some apples turn red over the majority of the fruit before they are ripe, so this is not a reliable indication of maturity.

Flavor.&nbsp;Sample a few slices and decide if they have a sweet flavor. If they are not ready to harvest, they will taste starchy or immature. If apples have fallen before they are ripe, store them for a period to see if they become more sweet.&nbsp;

Most pear cultivars should not be allowed to ripen on the tree, but rather picked while still firm and ripened after harvest. Upham said pears ripen from the inside out: “Waiting until the outside is completely ripe will often result in the interior of the fruit being mushy and brown,” he said.&nbsp;

Home gardeners can look for these cues to determine when pears are ready to be picked:&nbsp;

Color.&nbsp;The fruit’s background color – known as its ‘ground’ color -- changes from dark green to light or yellowish green when ripe.&nbsp;

Attachment to tree.&nbsp;The fruit should part easily from the branch when it is lifted and twisted.

Corking over the lenticels, the fruit’s breathing pores. Initially, they are white to greenish white, but turn brown as the fruit nears maturity. Lenticels look like brown specks on the fruit when it is ripe.

Smell and taste.&nbsp;When pears are ripe, you should be able to smell the characteristic aroma.&nbsp;

Upham said summer squash is harvested while immature, but winter squash (including acorn, hubbard and butternut) is harvested in the mature stage when the rind is tough and seeds have developed.&nbsp;

“We normally think September is the time that winter squash are harvested, but harvesting too early leads to fruit that shrivels and rots,” Upham said.&nbsp;

He notes that color and rind toughness are the two most important characteristics indicating when winter squash is ready.&nbsp;

“Winter squash changes color as it becomes mature,” said Upham, adding that butternut changes from light beige to tan; acorn starts deep green but forms a ground spot that is orange when ripe; and hubbard is gray or orange when mature.&nbsp;

Winter squash should also have a hard, tough rind, Upham said. “This is easily checked by trying to puncture the rind with your thumbnail or fingernail. If it easily penetrates the skin, the squash is not yet mature and will lose water through the skin, causing the fruit to dry and shrivel.”&nbsp;

Timing important when harvesting fruit, garden vegetables 

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher I have a neighbor who is in his 80s and several years ago he planted a grove of walnut trees. Now that is faith and foresight. I am sure he is not planning on reaping the benefits of those walnut trees unless he has somehow found the fountain of youth. The trees have done quite well, and they have grown very fast for walnut trees but at a conservative guess I will say they are 50, 60 maybe even 100 years away from someone gaining economically from them. That is a crop that requires a great deal of patience. That kind of forward thinking makes me marvel at the sacrifice my neighbor is making for the sake of a future generation. Those acres could be planted to crops or at least mowed for hay, but instead he has decided to plant those walnut trees to benefit someone a generation or two or maybe even four down the road. Someday someone he does not know will benefit greatly from the hard work he is putting in today. In many ways this is like our Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation. Sure, our foundation is funding things now. Things like financial help to counties sending members to the Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference or helping to feed those who are hungry in our own communities. That is important but what our foundation will do in the future is even of greater importance. It will ensure that our counties will have access to funds to promote agriculture, aid in operations of the county Farm Bureau and better the lives of our members. That is why it is so critical that all of us as members contribute to the foundation. I know money is tight and ag prices have seen better days. Believe me I know, and I feel your pain. Any gift is appreciated, and all gifts go toward doing important work locally and statewide. I am also aware there are many organizations and causes vying for our limited dollars, but what is more important than to ensure that we continue to have a strong and vibrant Kansas Farm Bureau? I am asking that you look at donating to the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation or the Kansas Farm Bureau Legal Foundation now because, if you haven’t noticed, it is already mid-August, and the end of the year is right around the corner. I know many of you are already planning for the new year and wrapping up this past year. I also know that this is the time many of us make charitable contributions, and I would ask that you look at a donation one of our foundations. Think of it like planting a grove of walnut trees without all the back-breaking labor and years of watering. You can watch the funds in the Foundation grow, all the time knowing that someday the next generation of Farm Bureau member will benefit.

Insight: Seeding success

Throughout our lives, certain days hold special meaning. For the Sunset Sinners, this Friday is one of those days. 

On Friday, the group's newest single, appropriately named "Friday Night," will be released on Spotify and all streaming services.

"This song was a collaboration with us and two very heavy hitter Nashville songwriters from Anthem Entertainment/Publishing that we’ve been working with -- Randy Montana, who wrote Luke Combs' massive hit song 'Beer Never Broke My Heart,' and Blake Chaffin, who has written hits for Brantley Gilbert, Logan Mize, Rodney Atkins, and others," said Blake Blackim, Sunset Sinners' drummer.

All four Sunset Sinners -- Chris Brungardt, Tony Bowell, Brad Johnson, and Blackim -- had been in different bands and projects before, Blackim said. Blackim had a vision for a new band, one that included the other three men, so he brought them together and explained his idea.

"I just met with those guys and gave them the vision I had: not only taking some cool cover songs and what we call 'Sinnerizing' 'em, so we kind of tweak 'em and change 'em up, then writing our own material and recording our own material and then just trying to make it as cool as we possibly can, play as many cool venues as possible, and just see where it goes," he said.

"One thing that had been on my mind, for whatever reason, all of a sudden I had a bunch of song ideas that kind of fit more of this red dirt country, '70s rock vibe," he continued. "And so I named it like its own genre called Whisky Barrel Rock, which is kind of a fusion of red dirt country, southern rock, and '70s classic rock."

That new genre is also the URL for the band's new website: <a href="https://www.whiskeybarrelrock.com">whiskeybarrelrock.com</a>.

Blackim said the band didn't come together with the idea of making big money.

"The music business is a brutal business and a brutal game and it's hard to make any real money, so we all have our own regular jobs, but this is kind of our passion," said Blackim, president of Midwest Music.

The band began rehearsing two years ago and tossing around ideas for songs to write and record.

"I was wanting to write song, and I had a bunch of lyric ideas about people getting together, drinking beer, and partying," he said. "There's all this political in-fighting, but you know, it's kind of funny because when everyone gets together, say on a Friday after work, that part goes by the wayside and everyone's together, just hanging out, drinking beer, and having a good time." 

That idea was the basis for the band's first single and music video, "Always Time For One More Beer," which was released last fall.

Blackim credits one of his best friends for the title of the song and video. He explained that whenever the two of them were out enjoying a few brews together, his friend would always be looking at his watch, telling Blackim that he needed to get home, only to then decide that he had time for one more beer.

"If you think about it, you hear people do that all the time," Blackim said. "I'm like 'bam!' That's it! And that was the inspiration for the song title."

The "Always Time For One More Beer" video, which includes footage from a shoot at The Hideaway with several hundred Salina extras, has become quite popular.

"The music video today, which basically has been promoted through Facebook, has like 350,000 views now, and that actually grows about 1,000 to 2,000 views per day," Blackim said. "It's pretty cool to track because it really is shared a lot -- we can see who is watching -- especially in the deep south of the United States, like Louisiana and Alabama, because it's kind of got that swampy southern rock vibe."

What is even more interesting is how the video is trending internationally, he said.

"Also, it's gone international, and this is what's kind of cool: it's like really big and tracking in Prague and Eastern Europe," Blackim added.

He explained that the Sunset Sinners' fan base is made up primarily of first responders, military personnel, and motorcycle enthusiasts, including motorcycle clubs in Eastern Europe.

Big-time recording contract no longer necessary

It used to be that a sign of success for a band was to sign a contract with a well-known recording label and head to a recording hotspot such as Nashville to make music that would be distributed to the public. That's no longer the case.

"The good news-bad news about the music industry today is you really don't have to be living in or from Nashville or Austin or L.A. You can be from anywhere," Blackim said. 

The Sunset Sinners record locally, at Studio 1117 in Salina, although guitarist Chris Brungardt, of Hays, records his guitar parts in his own studio and then mixes those with the recording/tracking from Studio 1117, Blackim said. 

"After that he and I trade the song back and forth to swap ideas, tones, phrasing, etc., and listen in multiple devices until we think we have it ready for release," Blackim explained.

While they do play concerts, when not hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sunset Sinners do not rely on the antiquated method of touring to promote themselves and their music. Instead, they rely on social media, which, considering their first music video has 350,000 views, seems to work well for them.

While a recording contract might not be necessary, the old adage about "who you know" still holds true.

"There's a guy in Nashville, a little bit younger than us, named 'Blake' also -- we call him 'Nashville Blake.' He's been down there about 15 years. He's originally from Hays, Kansas. Ironically, my guitar player, Chris, used to give him guitar lessons and I used to actually sell him stuff when he was a kid," Blackim said. "His parents still live in Hays, but he went down to Nashville as a guitar player and song writer and he now is a signed publisher with a group called Anthem Entertainment and Publishing. They're one of the largest in the world."

Blackim said he made arrangements for he and lead singer Tony Bowell to go to Music City, U.S.A. to meet with Nashville Blake (Blake Chaffin). 

"At the facility we were at, they (Anthem) have about 26 song writers on staff. A lot of times when songs are written, it's very rare that it is just one person doing it. It's usually a collaboration of two or three people. Sometime the actual artist is involved and a lot of times not," Blackim explained.

"They were totally cool with showing us around and telling us how the business works. We also spent some time in a listening room," he continued. 

After Blackim and Bowell returned to Salina, Chaffin called Blackim to discuss a song. Chaffin told Blackim that he had a song that no one else had picked up on that he thought fit the Sunset Sinners. After listening to the song, Blackim asked Chaffin, "why hasn't one of the big boys picked up on this." Blackim said that Chaffin replied that he asked himself the same question every day.

While the song will be released on Friday, the band also plans to shoot footage for the "Friday Night" music video this weekend, Blackim said. That video should be out within the next couple of months, he added.

KWU projected to hit recent enrollment high

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today announced one new confirmed case of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 176.

According to the health department, the most recent case is  a symptomatic female in her 60s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Of the 176 total confirmed cases, 156 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines.

Even in the best of years, teachers often purchase their own supplies to make sure their classrooms are adequately prepared for the school year. Then along comes the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially adding to the need for out-of-pocket supplies.

A local woman wants to do something about that for the teachers in Saline County.

Penny Thompson recently started a Facebook page to connect Saline County teachers in need of classroom supplies with community members willing to help out.

The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/996247750819888/">Support a Classroom - Saline Co. Kansas</a> group currently has more than 650 members and is open to both Saline County teachers and community members who want to help them.

"I just saw this on the news the other night that a lady in Wichita started a Facebook group to help out teachers. I thought what a great idea so I just put it out there," Thomson explained.

Thompson said she comes from a family with many teachers.

"I know how much money people spend out of their own pockets," she said.

"It's about our teachers and providing them with the items they need to provide a safe environment for our kids," added Amanda Morris, who helps Thompson administer the group.

Both Thompson and Morris said they would like to see the group be an ongoing effort to help out teachers.

"That would be awesome and as teachers see things or have things come up during the middle of the year, people could reach out," Thompson said.

"We have suggested to teachers to use a wishlist like Amazon which does automatically update. Those are easiest for people to order and send," Morris explained. "Individuals can also coordinate with teachers or me to get items to them. I've asked teachers that have specific needs and individuals who are fulfilling those needs to post on the request so we know what happening."

Additionally, they are looking at options for people who want to help but don't do Facebook, including doing some sort of fundraising event, she added.

Thompson said she was excited to see the response thus far.

"I counted 45 people who have asked for support and there’s been multiple people who have reached out. Pretty exciting to know that the community is ready to help," she said.

Local women trying to connect teachers with community help

Salina Presbyterian Manor’s assisted living got a perfect score on its assisted living focused infection control survey July 29. The survey was conducted by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS).

During its special session in June, the Kansas Legislature instructed KDADS to survey all adult care homes and other adult services licensed by the state within 90 days to ensure their readiness to respond to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“During this COVID pandemic I have witnessed the Assisted Living and Memory Care staff pour their hearts into our residents like never before,” said Amy Thompson, Assisted Living Director of Nursing. “From increased one-on-one activities, assisting with window visits with families and being a shoulder to cry on when a resident is missing a loved one on top of their normal workload. Not to mention the personal sacrifices of volunteering for extra shifts, postponing vacations, staying home to protect our residents and all that hand washing!”

Zero deficiencies means Salina Presbyterian Manor met all the standards for infection control in the community’s health care center.

“Our mission to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values is lived out every day by our employees,” said Christian Gilbert, executive director. “Receiving zero deficiencies in both health care and now assisted living is a testament to our employees’ dedication to our residents and their health and safety.”

“I could not be more proud to be a part of this awesome team who has taken such precautions and infection control to an unprecedented level to keep our residents safe and healthy,” said Thompson.

The purpose of a focused infection control survey is to examine the facility’s policies and emergency preparedness related to a pandemic or outbreak and a facility’s adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and KDADS guidance for infection control practices to prevent diseases.

During the survey, communities are assessed on staff and resident education on hand hygiene and coughing/sneezing etiquette, cleaning, screening of employees and residents, effective transmission-based precautions, proper use/discarding of personal protective equipment and signage at entrances and resident rooms.

KDADS surveys adult care homes and home plus agencies every 12 to 18 months for compliance of regulations established by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS).

The regulations are designed to ensure a standard of care is met. By meeting these standards, senior living communities are able to renew their licenses and continue to provide care.

Salina Presbyterian Manor is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), or life plan community, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, long-term health care and short-term rehabilitation.
