Weather History for Friday, August 21, 2020, from the National Weather Service in Wichita: In 1989, afternoon and evening severe thunderstorms struck the Northern and Central Plains from North Dakota to Kansas. The severe thunderstorms that tore through north-central Kansas walloped Wilson Dam with gusts around 105 mph between 9 and 10 p.m. Details regarding damage are unknown.

In 1883, a violent F5 tornado struck Rochester, Minn. The vicious vortex had a track 25 miles long and nearly reached one mile wide. The twister killed 37, injured around 200, and caused around $700,000 damage. The tremendous roar gave many people sufficient warning to seek shelter. Of the 40 farms in Dodge County, around 10 were leveled or vanished altogether. Many injuries were very serious and it is likely others perished in the disaster. The Rochester Tornado was the impetus for the creation of the Mayo Clinic.

In 2007, the atmospheric sauna ran full throttle across the southeast United States as Raleigh/Durham, N.C., set an all time record high of 105 degrees.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ABILENE -- Thanks to Abilene City Commission, 28 Abilene businesses are getting a share of coronavirus grant funds.

In June, the City of Abilene was awarded a $132,000 Community Development Block Grant – CV from the Kansas Department of Commerce to assist small businesses affected by COVID-19. The application for the city’s grant funds closed July 10. 

After reviewing grant applications and criteria, the Abilene City Commission approved splitting grant funds evenly between all qualifying business addresses.

“The Abilene City Commission recognizes all businesses have been affected by COVID-19,” said Mayor Chris Ostermann. “Our hope is for these grants to help support and promote Abilene’s small businesses and storefronts”

Twenty-eight businesses will each receive $4,714 to assist with operational expenses. Businesses receiving awards include the following.

Abilene awards coronavirus grant funds to 28 businesses

What advice do you have for college students who want to plan for the future and start building wealth? I’ll finish my master’s degree in marketing in less than two years, and I’ve been pretty lucky so far because my parents have paid for school. I bring in about $2,200 a month at my job, and I have $24,000 in savings.

If I were you, I’d get really good at the whole marketing thing. At this stage of the game, you are your best investment. You’re a go-getter, so just keep on going and getting it. If you continue on this path, and by that I mean working, going to school, and piling up cash, you’re going to be able to put that marketing know-how to work in a big way. You’ll be able to use some of the cash you’ve got stored away to set yourself up in your new life. What you’re doing right now, in your situation, will give you a better return mathematically than a mutual fund.

Do you get what I’m saying? An education that is usable is more valuable to you at this stage of the game than investing. Now, when you finish school and start living life in your new career, good growth stock mutual funds are what I’d recommend for retirement. And at that point, if you’ve got an extra $30,000 or $40,000 sitting there, that’s even better.

I’ll be 72 in October, and I have a Roth IRA I haven’t done anything with in a while. I’ve got about $30,000 in it, and I believe I read where the government said there will be a mandatory withdrawal at age 72. If this is true, what should I do with that money?

I’m not positive there are mandatory withdrawals on a Roth IRA. I think that applies to traditional IRAs, but double-check with your investment advisor to make sure.

If it does apply to Roths, I’d take the required minimum distribution and move that amount to other investments. Or, since it’s only $30,000, if you’ve got another nest egg you plan to live on, you could just have some fun with the money.

In any case, talk to your investment professional before taking action. If he has the heart of a teacher and cares about your best interests, he’ll look at your overall financial situation and guide you in making the right decision.

A photograph was obtained of the persons. One was described as a Black male, 30-40s, wearing a black ball cap, a light blue t-shirt, and dark shorts. He was accompanied by a Black female, 30-40s, with a blue striped dress.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about theft of rings from jewelry store

MANHATTAN – All grass seed is not created equal.&nbsp;

So says Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham, noting that it’s nearly time to think about putting down seed to establish new turfgrass or boost spots that have gone bare in existing lawns.&nbsp;

“Choosing quality seed is one of the most important steps in successfully planting or overseeding your lawn,” Upham said. “If you don’t know what to look for, you may be introduced to unwanted intruders in that new stand.”&nbsp;

Of particular concern, he said, is seed contaminated with orchardgrass or rough bluegrass (known by its Latin name,&nbsp;Poa trivialis, or Por triv for short). “Those are both perennial grassy weeds that cannot be selectively controlled once they are in the lawn,” Upham said.&nbsp;

“Orchardgrass is a problem because it is faster growing and lighter green than our traditional turfgrasses in Kansas,” he said. “It is a bunch grass so it doesn’t spread, but infested areas are still unsightly due to small tufts of this species that pockmark the lawn.”&nbsp;

Rough bluegrass is fine-textured and forms circular patches in the lawn. Upham said it blends in fairly well with most Kansas lawns until summertime heat causes it to turn brown rapidly.&nbsp;

“If the rough bluegrass would just die in the heat,” he said, “it would only be a temporary problem. Unfortunately, it usually just goes dormant, turning green again with cooler temperatures and rain.”&nbsp;

Upham said avoiding those two nemeses begins with knowing how to decipher the label on seed packages. He suggests avoiding labels that read either ‘Other Crop Seed’ or ‘Other Crop.’&nbsp;

“That label refers to any species that is intentionally grown for some purpose,” Upham said. “That includes turfgrasses (not including the one you likely want) and pasture grasses. Orchardgrass and rough bluegrass both are listed as ‘Other Crop’ seed.”&nbsp;

By law, seed labels are required to show the percentage of ‘Other Crop Seed’ in a bag, but unless it contains 5% or more of the unwanted species, the label does not have to list those by name.&nbsp;

So, then, how much ‘Other Crop’ is too much?&nbsp;

“That’s a difficult question to answer, but the tolerance is very low,” Upham said. “It depends on what the other crop is and the buyer’s expectations for quality.&nbsp;

“In practice, ‘Other Crop’ may refer to something relatively harmless, like a small amount of perennial ryegrass in a bag of tall fescue, or it might refer to something bad like orchardgrass or rough bluegrass. The homeowner really&nbsp;has no easy way of knowing what the other crop is.”&nbsp;

If your expectations for quality are high, Upham advises buying seed that contains as close to zero ‘Other Crop’ as possible. Good quality seed will often have .01% or less, he said.&nbsp;

“Another line on the seed label is ‘Weed Seed,’” Upham said. “That should also be listed as .01% or less.”&nbsp;

Picking the right grass seed is key to building a healthy lawn 

Today is Friday, Aug. 21, the 234th day of 2020. There are 132 days left in the year.

On August 21, 1831, Nat Turner launched a violent slave rebellion in Virginia resulting in the deaths of at least 55 whites. (Turner was later executed.) 

In 1609, Galileo Galilei demonstrated his new telescope to a group of officials atop the Campanile in Venice.

Forecast high temperatures will climb into the 90s for most by the weekend.

KDHE: Milford, Lovewell still under blue-green algae warnings

The City of Salina has announced the closing of a section of Schilling Road.

On Monday, Davis Concrete Construction of Salina will close Schilling Road west of Interstate 135 (I-135) to remove and replace a section of pavement.

Schilling Road will be closed to all traffic between Georgia and Royal where the repairs are being made. Schilling Road will be closed to trucks from Centennial to Marcella, which will be strictly enforced. 

Motorists are encouraged to use Magnolia and/or Water Well to travel between I-135 and Centennial and allow extra time to reach their destinations during the closure.

The repairs should be complete and the road reopened to all traffic on Aug. 28.

Tony’s Pizza Events Center announced today that The Texas Tenors concert scheduled for Sept. 19 will be moved to the arena in order to allow for socially distanced seating.

“We know that the public is missing live entertainment. By moving The Texas Tenors into a larger area, we are able to keep the original show date, and keep our guests socially distanced,” said Susan Trafton, general manager at Tony’s Pizza Events Center. “The safety and well-being of our guests, performers and staff is our top priority.”

The Texas Tenors performance in Salina is a fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals for Children and is being brought to you by the ISIS Shrine. Since 1922, the mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children is to provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries, and other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family-centered, and collaborative care environment. They also provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals and conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. This mission is carried out without regard to race, color, creed, sex, disability, national origin, or the ability of a patient or family to pay. The ISIS Shrine has been a viable part of the central and western Kansas communities since June 1887.
