MANHATTAN — COVID-19 may have changed how people will celebrate Halloween this year but it hasn't changed the dangers the holiday can bring to pets, according to a Kansas State University veterinarian. <a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/education/clinical-sciences/faculty-staff/faculty/nelson/" target="_blank">Susan Nelson</a>, clinical professor at the university's&nbsp;<a href="http://www.vet.k-state.edu/vhc/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>, provides some tips to keep your furry friend safe during the fun and spooky holiday. Nelson said one of the most important things to do is to keep all Halloween candy where pets can't get to it. "Chocolates, sugar-free candies and gums, raisins and some nuts can be toxic to pets," Nelson said. "Candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can also become choking hazards or gastrointestinal foreign bodies if ingested."

Pets can look adorable in costumes, but always try the costume on your pet in advance to give it time to get used to it, Nelson said. Ensure that the pet can see, hear, smell and breathe when in costume, and make sure to avoid costumes that have any loose or small parts that can be pulled off and ingested. "If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior in a costume, consider having it wear a Halloween-themed bandana instead," Nelson said. Strange visitors in scary costumes and loud noises may cause even the most social and/or calm animal to be frightened or show unexpected aggression. Nelson said that if your pet is one that becomes anxious because of noise and activity, keep it kenneled away from the activity or make a comfy spot in a back room with the radio or TV turned on to help drown out noise caused by excited children. This will help ensure that the animal doesn’t bolt out the door and run off when frightened by a scary costume. "Because many pets can become distressed by the frequent ringing of the doorbell, consider disconnecting the bell for the night and using a motion detector to detect visitors instead," Nelson said. "Even safer for pets and trick-or-treaters, you can wait at the end of the driveway to greet the kids and distribute candy in a safe manner outside the house, weather permitting." If your pet is one that gets severely distressed during this time, Nelson said to ask your veterinarian if sedatives are an option and can be prescribed. As Halloween is one of the holidays where pets are more likely to run off and become lost, Nelson said to make sure your pet has proper forms of identification, such as a microchip or tags. A reflective collar may also help others to spot your pet should it go missing at night. Another tip from Nelson is to be mindful that your pet may be frightened by one of its own familiar family members when that person is disguised in a costume. "A severe fright can make the pet wary of that person for some time to come, even after the costume has been removed," Nelson said. "Get your pet used to the costume well in advance of the holiday by giving it treats while wearing part of the costume, and then later, all of the costume as the pet becomes more familiar with it." Keep all pets inside on Halloween night to keep them safe from pranksters or those who want to do more serious harm. Cats, especially black ones, are often sought after with cruel intentions on Halloween, Nelson said, and caution needs to be exercised during this time to keep them safe. She said many shelters will not let black cats be adopted a few weeks before and after Halloween. Nelson said to also be aware of these other possible Halloween hazards for your pet: • Keep pets away from electrical cords and decorations. Chewing on electrical cords can lead to life-threatening electrocution and burns. Decorations using corncobs, strings or tassels can be ingested and cause obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract. • Keep lit pumpkins and candles out of reach, as they can burn your pet. A frightened or curious pet also can tip over a candle, which could lead to a house fire. Pumpkins can also be a source of toxic mold if ingested. • While not poisonous, glow sticks have a very bitter taste and can cause irritation to the mouth. Pets, especially cats, may drool uncontrollably and become very agitated. Some of the larger glow sticks contain a small glass vial, which when broken, activates the glow stick. The glass can be harmful if ingested. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, Nelson said to call your veterinarian, the ASPCA Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 immediately for advice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State vet shares tips to make Halloween a treat for furry friends

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today announced members of his 2020 Service Academy Selection Board. 

The 20-member board will review applications and interview candidates who are applying for admission to U.S. Service Academies.

Salina deputy city manager on Moran Service Academy Selection Board 

Several guns were stolen recently from a north Salina residence.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this afternoon that sometime between 4:45 p.m. Wednesday and 1:45 a.m. Thursday someone kicked in the back door of a residence in the 200 block of North 11th Street. After noticing the door upon returning home from work, the 29-year-old man who lives at the residence entered the house and noticed one of his gun cases had been moved to the living room floor. 

According to Forrester, the man then checked where he stores his firearms and found that three guns were missing: black Radical AR-15 .223, valued at $600, a Taurus 1911 .45 caliber blue chrome handgun, valued at $700, and a Sig Sauer .380 caliber, black with copper grips, valued at $700. Additionally, the man found that his Taurus 605. 357 caliber revolver, valued at $400, had been damaged, Forrester noted.

Total loss, including damage to the door, was estimated at $2,500, he added.

Video serveillance is being reviewed for clues as to who sprayed pink paint on a Menards employee's vehicle Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Salina man told police that his 2014 Honda Accord was parked at Menards, 805 Virginia Court, between 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Wednesday while he was at work, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this afternoon.

When the man got home from work, he noticed pink spray paint down the passenger side of the vehicle, Forrester noted. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

The owner, a 69-year-old Gypsum man, told police that someone had taken the items and ransacked the residence.

Rolling Hills Zoo shows off some of its cats on National Cat Day

On Friday and Saturday, APAC Kansas Shears Division of Salina will adjust manholes in the
intersection of Ohio and Cloud streets.

According to information from the City of Salina, the work consists of removing the tops of the manholes and
repouring new concrete manhole tops to match the new surface elevation created
by the recent resurfacing project.

During construction all left turn lanes at the intersection
will be closed to traffic.&nbsp; Vehicles on
Ohio approaching the intersection will be able to continue straight or turn
right.&nbsp; Vehicles on Cloud will be
required to turn right.

The
work is part of the City of Salina's $4.7 million annual road maintenance program.

The gloomy weather we have been experiencing is going away for a bit.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, the rain will exit southern Kansas this morning with sunshine returning this afternoon. High temperatures are expected to be around 50 degrees across the area.

It will not be as cool on Friday with high temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s across central and eastern Kansas, NWS noted. That trend is forecast to continue through the weekend.

Distracted, drunk and drowsy drivers pose dangers to trick-or-treaters and other road users this weekend

WICHITA – As Halloween 2020 approaches, AAA Kansas is raising concern for a dangerous traffic safety trifecta – increased pedestrian activity, drunk driving, and drowsy driving – all of which converge this Halloween weekend. The ghostly holiday falls on a Saturday this year, followed a few short hours later by “falling back” at the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) at 2 a.m. Sunday. 

Halloween festivities amid the COVID-19 pandemic will likely look different for many communities, parents, trick-or-treaters, and party goers. Traditional indoor activities, like costume parties for children and adults, can move outside in small, socially distanced settings. However those planning to celebrate should not lose sight of safety first. 

A scare in good fun is expected on Halloween, but AAA Kansas warns, not when it comes to child pedestrian safety.

●According to Safe Kids Worldwide,&nbsp;children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween as any other day of the year.

●The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that&nbsp;Halloween is consistently one of the top three days of the year for pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

Creative costumes, trick-or-treating and bags full of goodies are top Halloween priorities, but safety often becomes an afterthought. Excited trick-or-treaters can forget about safety, so drivers, party-goers and parents must be even more alert, as the risk of kids being injured by moving vehicles increases.

“With an increased risk of pedestrian crashes on Halloween night, AAA Kansas urges parents to take the time to make trick-or-treaters and their costumes safer and more visible to motorists,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman.&nbsp; “In addition, motorists must eliminate distractions, slow down and watch for children, as well as have a completely sober designated driver if drinking is part of a Halloween celebration.”

Halloween is also a statistically dangerous night for drunk driving. The combination of drinking and increased pedestrian traffic on Halloween is a deadly combination. AAA and the&nbsp;National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) found that:

●One-fourth of all pedestrian deaths ranging in age from 5-14 occurred in the four days leading up to Halloween (October 28-31) in 2017.

●On Halloween night 2017, 89 people were fatally injured in a traffic crash, with 13 percent involving alcohol.

●In 2017, more than half of pedestrian fatalities on Halloween occurred with the pedestrian outside of a marked crosswalk.

●From 2013 – 2017, 158 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night (NHTSA). From 2013 - 2017, 22 percent of pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night involved a drunk driver. (NHTSA). During that period, 42 percent of all people killed in motor vehicle crashes on Halloween night were in crashes involving a drunk driver. (NHTSA)

●Do not use your phone while behind the wheel, so you can focus on the road and trick-or-treaters.

●Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals. Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street. Broaden your scanning by looking for children left and right into yards and on front porches.

●Look for children crossing the street. They may not be paying attention to traffic and may cross the street mid-block or between parked cars.

●Carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys, taking extra care if you are backing up or turning.

●Turn your headlights on to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight.

●Make sure Halloween costumes are flame-retardant and light in color to improve visibility.

●Be bright at night – have trick-or-treaters use glow sticks or wear retro-reflective tape on costumes and on treat buckets.

●Ensure disguises don’t obstruct vision and avoid full facemasks.. Create face masks that coordinate with costumes rather than regular costume masks.&nbsp; This won’t obstruct vision and follows health and safety guidelines for COVID-19.

●Instead, use nontoxic face paint. Also, watch the length of billowy costumes to help avoid tripping.

●Ensure any props are flexible and blunt-tipped to avoid injury from tripping or horseplay.

●Ask an adult or older child to supervise children under age 12.

●Instruct children to travel only in familiar areas and along established routes.

●Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never to enter a stranger’s home or garage.

●Review trick-or-treating safety precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules.

●Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking in streets if possible.

●If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.

●Look both ways and listen for traffic before crossing the street.

●Cross streets only at the corner, using traffic signals and crosswalks, and never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block.

●Trick-or-treat in a group if someone older cannot go with you.

●Tell your parents where you are going.

●Carry a flashlight containing fresh batteries. Never shine flashlights into the eyes of oncoming drivers.

●Arrange a safe ride home and/or designate a driver before partaking in any festivities.

●If you are drunk, take a taxi or ride share service, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.

●Before leaving for a party, load ride share apps or put numbers of local cab companies or your designated driver(s) into your phone.

●Walking impaired can be as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.

●If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

●If you know someone who is about to drive or ride impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going.

Comfort's Salute to Service honors Michael Ascher

A variety of pop-up art installations in downtown Salina are closing out National Arts &amp; Humanities Month in the city.

Salina
Arts &amp; Humanities (SAH) commissioned eight local artists to create pop-up
installations in downtown Salina to celebrate National Arts &amp; Humanities Month and to inspire others about
how the arts can be created at home and in safe ways during the COVID-19
pandemic. Many of the installations are still available to view and will remain
through Saturday. The downtown arts installations by artist, title and
location are as follows.

●Cori Sherman North, yarn, “Waiting for the
Green New Deal” at 131 N. Santa Fe Ave.
Giant vines and leaves are woven across a framework in a colorful, autumnal
spectrum of green, yellow, gold, orange, red, and brown, that ends with
skeletal leaf remains. North said, “I see this work as showing the seasons
passing, as we anxiously await concerted action on our climate crisis.”

●Marideth
Highsmith,
yarn, “Labyrinth for a Feast” at Spilman
Plaza, 228 S. Santa Fe Ave.
Since Halloween is a favorite holiday for her, when asked to do a yarn
installation, Highsmith found the perfect yarn and location for a huge spider
web. Highsmith said, “Spider webs have always been fascinating to me; so much
beauty and time put into something used to catch a spider's food.”

●Danielle Houltberg, yarn, “Hope of the Honeybee,” also in Spilman Plaza, 228 S. Santa
Fe Ave. Houltberg said, “My inspiration behind this work stems from my
interest in the work being done to save the world’s bee populations.&nbsp; It
uses the connection between current research on the positive effects mushroom
mycelium have on virus reduction in honey bees, and the hope this discovery
offers for turning around their population decrease.”

●Darren Morawitz, chalk, “Kraken,” Phillips Plaza
at 136 N. Santa Fe Ave. Inspired by
his interest in Greek mythology, Morawitz said, “I wanted my piece to interact
with the environment and create a more immersive experience with the viewers.
This creature of myth had a great avenue for me to use its tentacles to wrap
and crawl among the pavement and stones.”

●Kimberly Vega,
chalk, “Ofrenda, Opfergabe, Offering,” in the plaza next to Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Ave. Depicting
and celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed, Vega said, “To keep
the cultures of my children alive, I have re-searched and participated&nbsp;in
many events. One of our beloved events is Day of the Dead celebrations. As I
worked on this piece&nbsp;with my daughter, we paid homage to those we have loved
and admired.”

poetry with chalk and Rainworks, “Concrete Poetry,” Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Ave., at the
Flower Nook at 208 E. Iron Ave., and at Spilman Plaza, 228 S. Santa Fe Ave.&nbsp;Epic
said “The three poems were written as epiphanies during turbulent times in my
life… I am hopeful that my articulation will be a light to those still
experiencing darkness.”

American poets in trees in her week-long installation “Poet-Tree” at five
locations downtown. “These poems speak kinds of hope that aren't always easily
defined,” Brack said. During the week of October 10, the “Poet-Tree” poems were placed
daily, with location clues posted to social media.&nbsp;

National Arts &amp; Humanities Month, established
in 1993, is celebrated every October in the U.S. It is designed to encourage
communities, families and individuals to explore new facets of the arts and
humanities and help them begin or strengthen lifelong habits or arts
participation

Pop-up art installations closing out National Arts & Humanities Month

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today announced 33 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and an additional death attributed to the virus. 

The total number of confirmed cases in the county is now at 428.

Of that total, 346 cases have either met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines or have died, the health department reported. Additionally, two of the active cases are hospitalized.

Following is the updated case data as provided by the health department.

• New cases since last public release: 33

• Hospitalized cases (may not represent current hospitalizations): 32

• Ventilated cases (may not represent current ventilated cases): 5

There are 35 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County to report since the last update on Monday, October 26. The total for the county is now 1,122, with 156 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 953 that have recovered, and a total of 13 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reports that they have 6 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital; the COVID-19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized.
