The decision to eliminate someone’s job after years of solid performance is not one that many employers make without serious consideration.

In the case of a beef cattle operation, the decision to sell the cow from the herd is often influenced by a variety of factors, including her performance, the quality of her offspring, cattle prices and marketing opportunities among others, say the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/calf-performance-cow-cullling">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, the experts addressed a question from a listener who asked about how a calf’s performance should be factored into the decision to sell its mother.

“The decision to cull a cow from the herd is a complex decision and it usually isn’t just one thing that drives that decision,” K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers said.

Specific to a calf’s performance, if the cow is in good body condition but the calf is not at the appropriate weight for its age, K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said it is likely that the cow is not supplying enough milk to meet that calf’s dietary needs.

“If the calf looks rough and the cow is in good shape, it tells me that calf is relying too much on the grass to meet its nutritional needs, and in a drought environment that can be challenging,” Lancaster said.

K-State veterinarian Bob Larson agreed and advised producers to evaluate the cow’s udder.

“If the calves are smaller than expected, make sure to confirm the cow has a functional udder,” Larson said

The experts agreed that studying the individual records can help make the decision to sell a cow that, historically, has raised small calves.

“By looking at the year-over-year records, a producer can see what the trend has been,” K-State agricultural economist Dustin Pendell said.

Those records can also tell producers the breeding date, pregnancy status and date of calving, and Larson said those are important to know when evaluating the performance of the cow-calf pair.

“If the calf’s performance is lower than average, I’d look at when the cow calved relative to the others in the herd and her pregnancy status,” Larson said. “If she has a calf each year that is within a reasonable weight per day of age, then I’d keep her in the herd rather than replacing her with a cow whose performance is unknown.”

Larson added that the weaning weights of the calves will vary depending on the dam’s age.

Another factor that can influence the size of the calf is the cow’s diet during pregnancy, according to Lancaster.

“If those smaller calves are born to cows that aren’t getting enough nutrition in the mid-to-late gestation, it can have a stunting effect on those calves,” he said.

KSRE Cattle Chat: How offspring performance influences culling decision

A dispute over an alleged vehicle burglary escalated into a physical fight and an alleged BB gun shooting in Salina on Friday, resulting in the arrests of two men.

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Cpt. James Feldman, officers were sent to the area of North Ninth Street and Stimmel Road after receiving reports of a physical altercation between two men. 

Upon arrival, officers contacted Ekko Okey, a 51-year-old Salinan and 43-year-old Joshua Angley, also of Salina. 

"Ekko stated that he believed that Joshua Angley had entered his vehicle, so he tracked him down to confront him," Cpt. Feldman said. "He [Ekko] exited his vehicle with a BB gun after supposedly after Joshua Angley commented, either that he would put a bullet in Mr. Ekko's head, or the other comment was that he was going to whoop his [Ekko's] ass."

In response, Ekko claimed he shot Angley five to seven times in the chest with the BB gun. Angley, however, denied being shot with the BB gun.

Due to conflicting statements, no immediate arrests were made at the scene. 

Officers later visited the Budget Host Inn at 222 East Diamond Drive, where Ekko stayed. The management provided video evidence showing Angley entering Ekko's vehicle and possibly removing an item. Although Ekko stated he did not notice anything missing from his vehicle, officers arrested Ekko for aggravated assault and battery.

Officers located Angley at 809 North Broadway. When officers attempted to arrest him, he resisted and tried to flee. He was apprehended and was charged with burglary of a vehicle, theft, interference with law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

WASHINGTON – As educators gear up for the new school year, the IRS reminds schoolteachers that the maximum deduction for classroom expenses in 2024 remains at $300.&nbsp;

This deduction allows educators to offset the cost of supplies, materials and other classroom essentials, providing some financial relief for those who spend their own money to improve their students' learning experience.&nbsp;

Under federal law, this $300 cap is unchanged from 2023, continuing the adjustment for inflation that began in 2022 when the limit was raised from $250.&nbsp;

Who qualifies for educator expense deductions?

This deduction is available for teachers, instructors, counselors, principals and aides who work at least 900 hours a school year in a school providing elementary or secondary education. 

Educators filing jointly can claim up to $600 if both spouses are eligible, but no more than $300 per person. Educators can claim this deduction even if they take the standard deduction, and both public and private school educators qualify.&nbsp;

Educators can claim deductions for out-of-pocket expenses on classroom items like books, supplies, equipment (including computers and software) and COVID-19 safety measures such as masks, disinfectants and air purifiers.

They may also deduct costs for professional development courses relevant to their teaching, though it could be more advantageous to use other educational tax benefits like the lifetime learning credit (refer to&nbsp;<a href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fforms-pubs%2Fabout-publication-970/1/0100019175e9d5dc-38b01c64-fe1c-4429-8351-2eead3ec0d04-000000/qjIrg-ZbUxs4hjtWtFh9dz4XxiXKu6IKDBbur3fHaL8=367">Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education</a>, Chapter 3).&nbsp;

Expenses for homeschooling or nonathletic supplies for health or physical education are not eligible

. The IRS recommends educators maintain detailed records, such as receipts and canceled checks, to substantiate their deductions.&nbsp;

Use E-file to claim educator expenses

For educators who have been granted a tax filing extension or qualify for a disaster extension, or for any other pertinent reason are still in the process of completing their 2023 tax return, the rules for claiming deductions remain consistent for the 2024 tax year. The filing extension deadline is Oct. 15, 2024. However, submitting a return before this date can aid in averting processing delays.&nbsp;

The IRS advises taxpayers to file electronically for a smoother process, whether they use tax software or a professional. Choose direct deposit for faster refunds. Last night, Gavin Williams pitched seven sharp innings, as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2.

Williams allowed one run and one hit, retiring his last 16 batters faced.

The Guardians began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead over Minnesota and Kansas City in the division, and held the Royals to just two hits in their season-high sixth consecutive loss.

Kansas City has tumbled to the bottom of the AL Wild Card standings but still holds the third spot with a 4.5 game lead over the Boston Red Sox

Staying in KC on Monday the Chiefs placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football injury list, which removes him from the active 53-man roster and means he will be out for at least the first four games of the season. Kansas City plays Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Chargers during that span.

Edwards-Helaire has been dealing with PTSD and vomiting after a 2018 shooting incident when he was in college at LSU.

And finally Kansas Wesleyan Men's Soccer picked up its first win of the 2024 campaign on Monday, knocking off the Southwestern Christian Eagles 3-2 in the Baker Labor Day Classic.

It was a comeback story for the Coyotes who trailed 2-0 heading into the final 10 minutes of the match, but persevered and overcame the deficit for the win.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 2 and 3

A Salina church group is safely home after the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol and a tire shop in Abilene.

According to a social media report, "KHP Trooper Mullins encountered a situation that reminds us all of the importance of being prepared.”

Just before 8:30a.m. Monday, Trooper Mullins pulled up to a bus stranded in the&nbsp; median just east of the Chapman exit on Interstate 70 in Dickinson county. The bus, carrying about 20 members of a church group from Salina, had blown both front tires while returning home from Kentucky.

Despite calls to several wreckers, no one had the equipment to tow the bus. Trooper Mullins advised the group to arrange rides for the passengers and reached out to <a href="https://www.donstire.net/">Don’s Tire in Abilene.</a> Even on his holiday off, a gentleman from<a href="https://www.donstire.net/"> Don’s Tire </a>stepped up to change the tires, ensuring everyone got home safely. After six hours of traffic control by Trooper Mullins, the bus was back on the road.

This incident is a reminder to always check your vehicles—whether big or small—before embarking on trips.

Theatre Salina is putting the finishing touches on its 64th season opener, Disney's The Little Mermaid. The production also marks the theatre's 364th production. The musical will run from Sept. 6-29 on Friday, and Saturday evenings and on Sunday afternoons.&nbsp;There are also two Thursday evening performances on September 19 and 26.

Salina’s Most Wanted — September

On Friday morning, Aug. 30,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/?_gl=1*119cdfq*_gcl_au*NjI4ODc4ODU2LjE3MTk5NDAzMzg.">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;and Pure Imagination Labs broke ground on the Kansas Advanced Immersive Research for Emerging Systems, or K-AIRES, Center, a spatial computing and learning facility that will propel the state of Kansas to the forefront of the technology entertainment industry.

<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2023-08/K-State-Salina-Pure-Imagination-Studios-partnership82323.html">Announced last year</a>, the $41 million, 47,500-square-foot K-AIRES Center will be a state-of-the-art studio and training space that will leverage immersive environments and provide learning and experiential opportunities to students that no other university does.

The K-AIRES facility will be located near the intersection of Scanlan Avenue and Beechcraft Road on the K-State Salina campus.&nbsp;

"This is not just construction on campus, this is the next step in creating a successful future for the K-State Salina and the Salina community," said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean. "This facility and the collaborative partnerships that make it possible are a great example of what can happen when we come together with vision, purpose, and determination."

As the first corporate partner to colocate on the Salina campus, Pure Imagination will bring entertainment work and careers to Kansas.

"Spatial computing is revolutionizing the way we engage with our environment, seamlessly integrating the physical and digital realms," said Joshua Wexler, co-founder of Pure Imagination Studios. "Salina, Kansas, stood out to us because of its unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and pushing the boundaries of technology. This groundbreaking technology will not only create a new art form and storytelling medium for entertainment but will also transform simulation, training and countless other industries."

Pure Imagination Studios is an award-winning independent entertainment studio best known for combining proprietary technology with groundbreaking storytelling.

"Along this monumental journey, everyone would ask us, 'Why did we choose Salina Kansas?' Was it the wheat, the sunsets? Well, those are lovely, but the real reason is, there's no traffic, and you can always find a parking space," Wexler joked. "But the second reason, and more importantly, is the people. The new headquarters at the K-AIRES Center will be home to the Pure Imagination Labs, a branch of the company focused on expanding the horizons of technology and imagination.

Starkey said the groundbreaking ceremony is a dream come true for the K-State Salina campus.&nbsp;

"It feels amazing. It's kind of like a dream come true. It's something that I can't even believe is happening," Starkey said. "Our work with General Atomics Innovation, they were wanting a simulation center. This has turned into so much more than a simulation center, being able to serve multiple different industries, in addition to to the aerospace industry and manufacturing industries. It's going to be an amazing project."

Salina Community Economic Developement Organizations Executive Director, Mitch Robinson shared how large-scale, competitive projects like K-AIRES become a reality through a combination of strategic vision and&nbsp; robust community support.

"This project is a little bit different, because it was originally on the airport property," Mitch Robinson said. "The airport was going to own and lease the building to the company, and then it evolved."

Robinson said Lt. Governor/Commerce Secretary Toland and the tools used by commerce were critical in securing this project.

"We [Salina Eco. Devo. Org.] have an excellent relationship with commerce and the Lieutenant Governor and Governor Kelly," Robinson said. "She has been personally involved in Schwans and Great Plains, Kubota, she has had an active role in all those things ."

"I would say without the support of Kansas Department of Commerce and their programs, also our state legislative partners, we wouldn't see the level of growth and development we have seen. Those partnerships have been so important to make things happen here," Robinson said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol encourages everyone to plan for a safe Labor Day Weekend. Excessive speed, inattention, and impaired driving are leading causes of traffic crashes. Troopers will be on the roadways enforcing Kansas laws and are available to assist motorists.

The Patrol is participating in the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign and will have additional enforcement to keep Kansas roadways safe and reduce the number and severity of crashes. It is everyone’s responsibility to travel safely, so we encourage everyone to plan ahead for their celebrations.

“As the summer travel season ends, the Kansas Highway Patrol will be working to ensure our travelers make it to their destinations safely. As you celebrate the upcoming Labor Day weekend, we urge everyone to have a sober driver or use a rideshare service if you have consumed alcohol or any impairing substance,” said Captain Candice Breshears.

If you’re traveling for the Labor Day holiday, the Patrol offers the following tips: Always wear your seatbelt every trip, every time. It’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

Check your vehicle’s condition, including tires, fluid levels, and mechanical equipment. 

Check road conditions here to look for construction or delays on your route. Allow plenty of time to arrive at your destination. 

Buckle up and make sure your children are in the appropriately fitted child safety seats. 

Have an emergency kit in your vehicle with essentials such as water, flashlights, chargers, blankets, and non-perishable food. 

Always have a sober driver before you drink alcohol away from home or take a sober ride to and from the location if you will be consuming alcohol. Remember, this is your decision. 

Before you take a new prescription medication, check your medication for driving warnings. 

Before you choose to drink and drive, think about your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.

KHP: Safety stressed for Labor Day Holiday

Kansas farmers will soon have the opportunity to explore the use of drones in agriculture at a public meeting on Sept. 10 in Garnett. Hosted by the Frontier Extension District and Coffey County Extension Office, the meeting titled *Using Drone Technology in Agriculture* will offer insights into how drones can enhance agricultural production.

The event is co-sponsored by the Anderson County and Coffey County conservation districts. There is no cost to attend, but interested individuals must register by calling Ryan Schaub at 785-448-6826 or emailing him at reschaub@ksu.edu.

“In our area, we have seen a growing interest in how to start businesses that use drones for spraying herbicides and insecticides on fields,” said Schaub, a crop production and farm management agent with K-State Research and Extension’s Frontier District. “These inquiries often lead to further questions about regulations and which drones are best suited for purchase.”

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global agriculture drone market was valued at $4.98 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to $6.11 billion by the end of 2024. By 2032, the market is forecasted to reach $23.78 billion.

“The farmers I talk to are asking about how to use drones for various tasks like spreading cover crops or spraying insecticides on small acreage row crop ground,” Schaub said. “There are also numerous other applications, such as checking cattle during calving season or spraying herbicide on hilly pastures.”

In addition to live drone demonstrations, the Sept. 10 meeting will feature several expert speakers. Trevor Witt, owner of Kairos Geospatial, will cover practical applications of drone remote sensing for natural resource conservation. Kelly Nainsky-Wenzel from the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s pesticide and fertilizer division will discuss KDA’s role when drones are used to apply herbicides. Haley Larson, a professor at K-State Olathe, will speak on using drones in feedyards and emerging technologies in agriculture.

“Each speaker brings unique, hands-on experience in using drones for various applications,” Schaub noted. “For attendees, learning about the diverse ways the same equipment can be utilized helps justify their investment.”

 </figure>By PAT MELGARES K-State Research and Extension News Service Kansas farmers will soon have the opportunity to explore the use of drones in agriculture at a public meeting on Sept. 10 in Garnett. Hosted by the Frontier Extension District and Coffey County Extension Office, the meeting titled *Using Drone Technology in Agriculture* will offer insights into how drones can enhance agricultural production.The event is co-sponsored by the Anderson County and Coffey County conservation districts. There is no cost to attend, but interested individuals must register by calling Ryan Schaub at 785-448-6826 or emailing him at reschaub@ksu.edu.“In our area, we have seen a growing interest in how to start businesses that use drones for spraying herbicides and insecticides on fields,” said Schaub, a crop production and farm management agent with K-State Research and Extension’s Frontier District. “These inquiries often lead to further questions about regulations and which drones are best suited for purchase.”According to Fortune Business Insights, the global agriculture drone market was valued at $4.98 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to $6.11 billion by the end of 2024. By 2032, the market is forecasted to reach $23.78 billion.“The farmers I talk to are asking about how to use drones for various tasks like spreading cover crops or spraying insecticides on small acreage row crop ground,” Schaub said. “There are also numerous other applications, such as checking cattle during calving season or spraying herbicide on hilly pastures.”In addition to live drone demonstrations, the Sept. 10 meeting will feature several expert speakers.
