Fire destroyed a building west of Salina Tuesday night.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire District 7 were sent to 1334 West North Street at 11:17 p.m. Tuesday for the report of a structure fire. The building was rented by Gerald Teet, 48, of Salina, who used it for his firewood business, Soldan said.

According to Soldan, Teet had a wood-burning stove inside the building and had left it burning after leaving for the day. Somehow, the fire got out of the stove and spread throughout the building.

A $4,000 New Holland skid loader and $3,000 John Deere Gator belonging to Teet were destroyed in the fire, as was the building, which belonged to Earl Kinderknecht of Salina, Soldan said. There was no loss estimate for the building.

OCCK is continuing to provide a transportation option for people using the Salina Regional Airport.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The OCCK shuttle provides passengers with a safe and cost effective alternative to other options.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Salina Airport flight schedule will update Feb. 11 to include more flights.

A daily weekday shuttle service is available for passengers disembarking the mid-morning flight from Chicago.&nbsp;&nbsp;That flight is scheduled to arrive at between 11:03 - 11:20 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday each week.&nbsp;&nbsp;The OCCK Airport Shuttle Bus will be waiting at the Airport Terminal and will deliver passengers to destinations with the Salina city limits.&nbsp;&nbsp;No reservations are necessary for this shuttle.&nbsp;&nbsp;Passengers merely inform the driver of their destination.&nbsp;&nbsp;The cost to passengers for this shuttle will be $2.&nbsp;&nbsp;Exact fares will be needed as drivers are not able to make change.&nbsp;

Passengers can call to make transportation arrangements for other flights as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;To book reservations for transportation for any other flight, passengers would need to call OCCK Transportation at 785-826-1583, by 4 p.m. the prior day, to schedule a pick up location and time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Reservations may be made up to two weeks in advance.&nbsp;&nbsp;The cost to passengers for the transportation during OCCK’s business hours will be $2.&nbsp;&nbsp;After hours service will be conducted with a taxi and will cost $5 for a one way ride to the Airport.

“We’re very excited to continue this service,” said Michelle Griffin, mobility manager at OCCK. “The pandemic changed operations for a while, but with a new airport schedule, we can serve Salina and the airport in this way.&nbsp;&nbsp;We continue to look for new transportation partnerships that help us to increase accessibility options for transit in our area.”

Local, area students earn fall 2020 academic honors at K-State

Dreams have been on my mind lately. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality; our founding fathers’ dream of a government of, by, and for the people; and the dreams of little girls who want to grow up to be president of the United States of America. Some dreams have a fairytale like quality where they feel grand, pure and wondrous. I think this comes from our habit of imagining the joy and pleasure that would result from a dream come true. In this euphoric idealization, so many of us forget to think about what it really takes to make dreams a reality. Dr. King painted an eloquent and noble picture of a society that values equality, be he was not naïve. He fought discrimination, injustice and hatred in every step toward his dream. Our founding fathers built an experimental framework for government that would give the people unprecedented power and freedom, but they were not starry-eyed. They staked their lives and fortunes on this new government with no certainty that it would function. Vice President Kamala Harris was recently inaugurated into the highest office any female has ever held, but she is not without battle scars. She has labored to build a reputation of competence to overcome prejudices that exist around her race and gender. Dreams are so much more than regular goals or accomplishments; they are built on hope and grow in the heart and mind of the dreamer. In fact, the definition of a dream is a cherished aspiration, ambition or ideal. Earlier this month, I had a dream come true. I received the top recognition in the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers &amp; Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture competition. This is the equivalent of winning a national championship in sports except it was for my work as a Farm Bureau leader and overall advancement of the agriculture industry. When most people learn of my achievement, they are not very interested in discussing the important impacts I have made in my industry and community or how humbled I am to have been recognized among a field of talented young agriculture leaders doing great things in their communities across the country. People instead want to talk about the new Ford truck I won as a prize because they imagine how great it would be for them to win a truck. I am grateful for the truck, but it was not the real motivation of my efforts. That cherished nature in our dreams makes us particularly vulnerable to the effects of plagiarism and distortion to those dreams. We can all benefit from recognizing that we should not try to make someone else’s dream our own aspirations, ambitions or ideals. As you encounter humans around you, keep in mind that their dreams are personal and valuable. Do not claim other’s causes unless you are committed to live for them in your life or assume that all dreams are made in your image. Conversely, you should applaud others who are achieving great things; they have worked hard joy is merited. As for your own dreams, I urge you to pursue them courageously like the founding fathers, virtuously like Dr. King, tenaciously like Vice President Harris and with the unbridled hope that comes from the passion of our hearts. We all can’t wait to see you succeed.

INSIGHT: Making dreams true

LINDSBORG -- As it was with many events, the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on the 2020 Messiah Festival. But that was last year, and Bethany College has made adjustments in order to have a 2021 Messiah Festival. 

All events will have COVID mitigation protocols implemented to ensure the safety of participants, the college noted. At this time there are not plans to include live audiences. Instead, each event that is normally ticketed, as well as many others, will be livestreamed. If it becomes possible to include a live audience, a limited number of tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the event. Stay tuned to <a href="http://www.messiahfestival.org">www.messiahfestival.org</a> for updates.

Dr. Mark Lucas, artistic director, said, “At this time we are planning to perform Handel’s Messiah with full forces but masked and socially distanced. If the COVID situation does not improve we will pivot to a performance with a reduced number of performers. Also, this year’s rehearsal schedule will be drastically reduced from years past. Returning singers will only be required to attend one sectional rehearsal before the dress rehearsal on Sunday, March 21, and new singers will only have one extra rehearsal at which I will help give them instructions on how they can be learning the music on their own. We have yet to make a final decision as to whether or not we will perform Bach’s Passion according to St. Matthew.”

According to Manda Deegan, Messiah Festival coordinator, all singers will be provided with a special Resonance Singing Mask made of a very high thread-count cotton outer shell, with a wicking technical knit polyester on the inside, knit with bamboo charcoal that is naturally anti-microbial and anti-bacterial. Each mask also has a disposable filter and a long double wire and silicone seal in the nose panel to keep aerosol and droplets contained.

March 5–April 4: Lindsborg Collects… Lindsborg Art in Downtown Lindsborg

The Lindsborg Collects Exhibition showcases the privately owned art collections of local residents with a focus on artists who have a Lindsborg or Bethany College connection. The show will be open at 105 North Main Street in downtown Lindsborg from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

March 1–May 23: 123rd Annual Midwest Art Exhibition at Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery

The 123rd annual Midwest Art Exhibition will feature works by Bethany College graduates Richard and Tom Klocke of Lawrence; mixed media woodcuts by Salina native Jim Sherraden of White Creeks, Tennessee; art by members of the Sandzén Gallery’s Show Committee (Cary Brinegar, Wayne Conyers, Maleta Forsberg, Michael Jilg, Elizabeth Liljegren, Ron Michael, Karla Prickett, and Rose Marie Wallen); and selections from the Dave Woolard Collection of Hays.

The gallery will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am until 5pm and on Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we will be unable to have an opening reception for the exhibition.

March 19–April 4: Juried Student Art Exhibition at Mingenback Art Center

The Department of Art and Digital Media at Bethany College will host a corridor exhibition at Mingenback Art Center of artwork created by local women art instructors alongside the traditional juried exhibition of artwork created by Bethany College students, judged by visual artist Ruth Moritz. An awards ceremony for the winning exhibiting art student work to be held after the A Celebration of Women in Leadership event ends on the Presser Auditorium stage on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021, with a small reception to follow.

Sunday, March 21 at 3 p.m.: Messiah Dress Rehearsal featuring Student Soloists at Presser Hall Auditorium

Student soloists from the Bethany College Department of Music will sing the arias as part of the annual dress rehearsal of Handel’s Messiah. Also featured will be a special women’s chorus conducted by Mrs. Britney English, Vocal Music Teacher at Smoky Valley High School. Following the event there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Alma Swensson Garden in Swensson Park just west of Presser Hall. This event will be livestreamed, and if the COVID situation allows a limited number of tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event. The Bethany Oratorio Society is planning a full performance of Handel’s Messiah on Easter Sunday with the full Oratorio Society Chorus and Orchestra. To facilitate social distancing the chorus and orchestra, who will all be wearing special singing masks, will be spread throughout the Presser Hall Auditorium. This event will be livestreamed, and if the COVID situation allows a limited number of tickets for balcony seating will be available at the door on the day of the event. Bethany announces plans for 2021 Messiah Festival

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 27, the 27th day of 2021. There are 338 days left in the year. 

On Jan. 27, 1756, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria. 

In 1880, Thomas Edison received a patent for his electric incandescent lamp. 

In 1901, opera composer Giuseppe Verdi died in Milan, Italy, at age 87.

In 1944, during World War II, the Soviet Union announced the complete end of the deadly German siege of Leningrad, which had lasted for more than two years.

Wednesday delays due to weather announced

Members of area 4-H clubs recently got a dramatic demonstration of the power of the ocean from volume and pressure alone.&nbsp;

Marine geologist Aida Farough showed more than 30 participants in an online district-wide meeting about marine geology the results of one of her experiments. She took a six-inch foam coffee cup down about 12,000 feet to the bottom of the ocean.&nbsp;

	She showed the participants a picture of the cup after it returned, compressed to only about two inches high.

Members of the Central Kansas District and Smoky View 4-H Club attended the meeting about marine geology on Jan. 14.&nbsp;&nbsp;

	Farough, Kansas State University teaching assistant professor of geology, taught the members about marine geology and equipment used by marine geologists to study the ocean floor, such as ships, drills, and submarines.&nbsp;

She also taught about landforms at the bottom of the ocean, such as thermal vents, volcanoes, mountain ranges, and pillars. There is also much life at the bottom of the ocean, such as tubeworms, crabs, and even small sharks.

In the 4-H geology project, members can explore the science of rocks, can determine types of rocks and minerals, and can gather their own rock collections.

4-Hers learn about the power of the ocean

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported 58 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 2,947.

Of that total, 1,746 have either met recovery guidelines or have died, and 12 of the active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.

Following is the updated case data from the health department.

• New cases since last public release: 58

Additionally, the health department reported on the county's vaccine effort.

"COVID-19 vaccine distribution will require the community to remain flexible. Locals do not have control over how many doses KDHE sends. Phase 2 of the Kansas Vaccination Plan includes specific entities and those 65+ years old. At this time, McPherson County Health Department will be prioritizing

Phase 2 entities based on known risk and health factors. MCHD will reach out to the named entities as previous groups are vaccinated and doses become available. While federal supply prevents KDHE from supplying providers with vaccine, MCHD will be dividing our shipments amongst county providers to help vaccinate the 65+ population," the health department explained.

• Individuals 65+ years old should contact their primary care provider to be vaccinated. If you do not have a primary care provider, please call MCHD at 620-241-1753.

• Healthcare associated workers from Phase 1 will be able to receive vaccine in Phase 2 if they weren’t vaccinated in Phase 1 shipments.

• Group A: K-12 staff, childcare providers, and disability service staff.

• Group B: Homeless shelters, higher education staff, USPS, and public transportation.

• Group C: Food processing, agriculture, DMV, and public city and county offices.

"If you have questions about whether you should receive the vaccine or not, please discuss your concerns with your primary care provider. Vaccine supply comes in very small shipments so continued patience is appreciated," the health department noted.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of one to two inches, with higher amounts near three inches are possible. Snowfall rates up to a half an inch per hour are possible.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute today and the morning  commute Wednesday. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

NWS in Wichita also has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of one to three inches, with higher amounts near four inches are possible.

Additionally, wind chill values of zero to five degrees below zero are forecast.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute today and the morning commute Wednesday.

NWS in Hastings, Neb., has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of generally around 2 inches, but with localized higher amounts around 3 inches are possible. Winds will only average around 10 mph.

Although this snow event will not be nearly as significant as the one that occurred Monday in most of the area, evening and overnight travel could be impacted. Plan on slippery road conditions, and be prepared for a few more inches of snow on top of any heavy snow that has already fallen this week. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

NWS in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday that includes Republic County.

Kansas Wesleyan University has named alumna Claire Houk (Massey), ’17, director of recruitment and alumni and parent engagement, effective immediately.

Houk enters her new role following several months as the Associate Director of Admissions. In her new position, she will assist with strategy regarding recruitment and admissions processes, as well as helping to manage the day-to-day processes in the admissions office. In addition, she will take the lead on many campus events, both virtual and on-ground when possible, and will manage communications to alumni and parents.

“This position is an excellent fit for Claire,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement, admissions and marketing. “She has excelled in her role within admissions and was a key driver in our increased enrollment in the fall. I expect that, moving forward, she will continue to perform at a high level and bring new ideas and vision to this position.”

Houk graduated from KWU in 2017, when she was the recipient of the Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Award. While a student, she competed on the women’s golf team, sang in the Philharmonic Choir and Wesleyan Chorale and was a member of the award-winning Alpha Chi honor society. She is currently in KWU’s MBA program.

“I’m excited to take on this new position,” said Houk. “As a Kansas Wesleyan alumna myself, it will be a pleasure to help foster relationships between fellow KWU graduates. I look forward to seeing the Coyote Pack continue to develop!”
