Rolling Hills Zoo has announced that Ryan VanZant has been selected as the zoo’s new executive director. 

VanZant will succeed Bob Jenkins who retired as the zoo’s Executive Director after eight years leading the organization.

“The Board of Directors of Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) is excited to welcome Ryan VanZant, as our new executive director,” said Sandy Walker, RHZ board president. “Following a nationwide search, Ryan was chosen for his diverse body of experience and his self-described 'roll up your shirt sleeves and get it done' approach. Ryan has a warm and engaging presence and is experienced in, among other things, zoo management, exhibit design and construction, and fundraising. We are confident that he will make a significant contribution to our zoo.”

“At Rolling Hills Zoo, my focus will be on the visitor experience and the institution’s continued success,” VanZant said. “The biggest accomplishment of RHZ to me is how it came to be. I spent time at the zoo’s fantastic 20th anniversary exhibit in 2019, absorbing every word about its creation through Mr. Walker’s vision and 'go big' enthusiasm to create a top notch zoological and cultural institution. The Zoo’s mission, physical and prairie location, and its built 'by its own bootstraps' history make it an easy place for me to fall in love with. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead Rolling Hills Zoo into its next twenty years.”

Prior to joining Rolling Hills Zoo, VanZant served as the director at Hutchinson Zoo where he made significant improvements in the company culture, completed long awaited capital projects, and achieved reaccreditation through the Association of Zoos &amp; Aquariums (AZA).

VanZant has also served as the director of education at the Sutton&nbsp; Avian Research Center at the University of Oklahoma, and as a trainer with Natural Encounters, Inc. for Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Flights of Wonder.

With a Master of Arts from the University of Oklahoma in museum studies, whose primarily focus was leadership and management of natural history museums, VanZant has a refreshed perspective on the effectiveness and importance of this segment of public trust.

VanZant is also looking forward to his move to Salina, which in his eyes is a growing hub, literally at the crossroads of central Kansas, with a strong representation of arts and humanities, entertainment, education and health care.

On a final note VanZant shared, “many find it odd, but the tall grass prairie is where I feel most at home. I have set foot on most continents and experienced many different ecosystems in the name of conservation throughout my career, but my most fulfilling times have been spent at sunrise listening to the prairie chickens boom in the light fog among the sea of grass. Each time I visited Rolling Hills Zoo I am enamored by the landscape. Additionally, the wildlife museum is as exciting as the zoo.”

The Bennington State Bank (BSB) has announced the promotion of several key leaders. The strategic appointments will play a key role in supporting the company’s expansion, growth and goals.

The Board of Directors unanimously elected Darren Gragg to succeed Burke Matthews as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Bennington State Bank (BSB), effective January 31, 2021. Matthews will continue as President Emeritus for the next several years.

“Darren (Gragg) brings the skills and experience to deliver the leadership that is needed today, while building and preparing for tomorrow,” said Matthews.

Commenting on his appointment, Gragg said, “It is an honor to assume the role as President and CEO at BSB. Working alongside the most talented and committed team of bankers to serve our communities and customers is a privilege.”

Kory Tinkler, Executive Vice President, has been promoted to role of Chief Credit Officer. Tinkler will be responsible for the overall management of the bank’s loan portfolio, providing support and direction to lending staff as well as overseeing strategies for managing the bank’s lending portfolio. 

Brett Mitchell has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Chief Banking Officer. Mitchell will be responsible for contributing to the strategic planning and direction of the bank, overseeing customer relationship growth and implementing annual goals and objectives.

Evette Beckman has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer where she will be responsible for managing operational activities and ensuring the delivery of reliable, quality, and timely service to customers.

Brandy Felzien has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Chief Wealth Officer. Felzien is responsible for oversight and leadership of all aspects of Bennington State Bank Trust &amp; Wealth Management, including formulating and executing the overall BSB Trust &amp; Wealth Management strategic plan.

Joshua Marquardt has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Wamego Market President where he will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations at the Wamego location. Marquardt will provide leadership in achieving the bank’s growth goals in the Wamego market. 

Debra Adams has been promoted to Vice President, Treasury Management Officer. Adams will be responsible for promoting Treasury Management products and services, providing creative product solutions that create cash management efficiencies for business customers, and presenting consultations and demonstrations to existing and prospective business customers.

Ryan McMillan has been promoted to Vice President, Loan Officer. McMillan will be responsible for managing the Minneapolis team, ensuring the customer needs are met, functions are completed effectively, and strong relationships within the community are established.

Dakota Rohleder has been promoted to Vice President, Loan Officer. Rohleder is responsible for originating, managing and supervising a portfolio of agriculture and consumer loans. Rohleder works with farmers and rural citizens to determine needs, advise, and obtain funds for their operation.

Shannon Bosch has been promoted to Assistant Vice President, Loan Officer. Bosch is responsible for originating, administering, and evaluating consumer and real estate loans based on customer needs and opportunities in the Wamego and surrounding markets.

Erin Hayes has been promoted to Assistant Vice President, Compliance/BSA Officer. Hayes has recently earned the Community Bank Compliance Officer certification while taking on the BSA Officer role as well as ensuring the bank is compliant with regulations governing the operations of the bank.

If you are apathetic because you think things like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/askdave/debt/debt-and-income-crisis" target="_blank">debt</a>&nbsp;and living paycheck-to-paycheck are okay or just the way things are, you’ll be unwilling—or even afraid—to make the big changes necessary to achieve big results. We’ve been sold on the idea of debt so aggressively that most folks don’t believe life without a pile of payments is possible.&nbsp;

Also, change is painful. Most people won’t change until the pain of where they are exceeds the pain of change. No matter who you are, where you’re at right now financially is, in large part, a sum total of the decisions you’ve made to this point. If you don’t like where you are, you have to acknowledge the fact that things need to change—you&nbsp;need to change.

Finally, there’s an element of ignorance involved. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean being dumb or stupid. What I’m talking about is a simple lack of good, solid information. Anyone can learn things, if they’ll just admit they don’t have all the answers and set their minds to studying and educating themselves. If you’re not careful, what you don’t know about money will&nbsp;make&nbsp;you broke and&nbsp;keep&nbsp;you broke!

CCCC announces fall 2020 President's List

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 vaccine update for Thursday.

Planning to receive your COVID-19 vaccine in Saline County just got easier thanks to a collaboration between Salina Family Healthcare Center, Saline County Health Department, and Salina Regional Health Center.

“We are so pleased that 900 people, most of whom are senior citizens, were able to receive their vaccine this week,” said Jason Tiller, Saline County Health Officer. “Now that we have more clarity from the state about how much vaccine we will have and how often it will be delivered, we’ve been able to create a more long-term sustainable solution to vaccine scheduling.”

Last week the County Health Partners opened 900 appointments, representing all 900 doses of vaccine available, and in under 30 minute every appointment had been claimed.

The new system works by way of registry. Saturday forecast to be a wet one, NWS says

A Salina woman was injured and a Great Bend man cited after a three-vehicle accident Wednesday morning in the central part of the city.

Dalton Murphy, 21, of Great Bend, was northbound on South Fourth Street in a 2001 Dodge Durango and stopped at the intersection with East Crawford Street. According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, Murphy pulled into the intersection and was struck by an eastbound 2017 Nissan Altima driven by Cecilia Cabral, 32, of Salina.

The impact spun both vehicles into the westbound lanes of East Crawford Street, where they were struck by a 2019 Ford Fusion driven by Joseph Calhoun, 40, of Baldwin City, Forrester reported.

Cabral was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center for minor injuries including her ankle, right hand, and wrist, Forrester explained.

The Durango and Altima both had disabling damage and were towed from the scene, while the Fusion had front end damage and was removed by the owner, he added.

Murphy was cited for failure to yield the right of way and driving while suspended.

ABILENE -- The Dickinson County Health Department today announced that a temporary COVID-19 vaccination facility.

The vaccination site will be in the Holm Auto West building (former Green Ford) at 2104 North Buckeye in Abilene.

According to the health department, at this time vaccinations are being limited to persons ages 80 and older "due to the extremely limited amount of vaccine that Dickinson County has received."

"This age group has been determined to have a high mortality and hospitalization rate, as compared to other age populations. Senior citizens are the highest priority group included in Phase 2. Once a large percentage of those in this age group become vaccinated we will open vaccinations to those 65 and older persons," the health department noted in an announcement on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dickinsoncountyhealth/">Facebook page</a>.

Vaccines will be given by appointment only to those 80 and older and persons eligible in Phase 1 who have yet to be vaccinated, the notice stated.

"Phases and priority groups in each phase will be determined by supply and demand -- not time. Phases will move forward as quickly as possible," the health department explained.

Appointment scheduling is only available online. Appointments cannot be taken over the phone or in person at this time, according to the health department.

FTC: It’s National Data Privacy Day

TOPEKA – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has advised consumers to protect themselves against purchasing counterfeit NFL merchandise or falling victim to phone scams involving fake tickets to Super Bowl LV.

“We’re all proud of the Chiefs’ repeat trip to the Super Bowl and the opportunity to run it back,” Schmidt said. “But Kansans should keep up their guard against scammers looking to make a quick buck off the team’s success by selling fake merchandise or non-existent tickets falsely promising fans entry to the limited-capacity game.”

Schmidt offered the following tips for making a purchase related to the Super Bowl:

Check the tag.&nbsp;All officially licensed NFL products will bear the league’s shield on the tag. If the tag on the merchandise does not have the hologram shield, it may be counterfeit. A good indication of official merchandise includes where it is manufactured and the quality of the NFL logo on the item.

Beware of phone scams.&nbsp;Last year, during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run, local officials reported receiving complaints of phone scams regarding game ticket purchases, with scammers using phone numbers that appear local with a 913 or 816 area code offering discounted tickets sold online. Once the scammer receives the online payment for the tickets, they block the consumer’s phone number to prevent a call back when the tickets inevitably do not arrive. As a general rule, consumers should not answer the phone when it is an unrecognized number and never give personal information or make a payment over the phone or over an unverified website.

Purchase tickets through a verified source.&nbsp;The Chiefs have offered NFL ticket exchange, StubHub and SeatGeek as examples of NFL-approved retailers to purchase or sell tickets to the game. Remember, capacity will be limited to 22,000 spectators and a significant portion of those tickets will be for specially invited front-line health care workers.

Door-to-door and 'pop-up stand' sales.&nbsp;Kansas law says that for any purchase of more than $25 made at your home, or any location that is not the seller’s permanent place of business or local address, consumers have three days after the purchase is made to cancel the transaction. Kansas door-to-door statutes regulate these sales from, for example, "pop-up" sidewalk stands and tents in parking lots with Chiefs merchandise. The seller must give written and verbal notice of this right to cancel and contact information if consumers choose to exercise their right to cancel. Consumers who wish to cancel the transaction should do so by certified mail so&nbsp;it can be tracked. Companies are then required to refund the consumer’s money within 10 days of receiving the cancellation. Kansas law also requires the sales receipt to be dated, show the name and address of the seller, be in a large legible font and explain the right to cancel. The receipt must be in the same language used in the sales presentation.

Last year, Schmidt’s office participated in coordinated enforcement actions with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Kansas Department of Revenue and the Topeka Police Department against out-of-state pop-up sellers of counterfeit Chiefs merchandise. The actions resulted in enforcement actions being filed, including one that led to the banning of a Tennessee man from doing business in Kansas and $30,000 in civil penalties.

Consumers who believe they may have fallen victim to a Super Bowl-related scam should contact their local law enforcement, or call the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division at&nbsp;(800) 432-2310. Complaints may also be filed online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.inyourcornerkansas.org/" target="_blank">www.InYourCornerKansas.org</a>.&nbsp;

TOPEKA – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has advised consumers to protect themselves against purchasing counterfeit NFL merchandise or falling victim to phone scams involving fake tickets to Super Bowl LV.“We’re all proud of the Chiefs’ repeat trip to the Super Bowl and the opportunity to run it back,” Schmidt said. “But Kansans should keep up their guard against scammers looking to make a quick buck off the team’s success by selling fake merchandise or non-existent tickets falsely promising fans entry to the limited-capacity game.”Schmidt offered the following tips for making a purchase related to the Super Bowl:Check the tag.&nbsp;All officially licensed NFL products will bear the league’s shield on the tag. If the tag on the merchandise does not have the hologram shield, it may be counterfeit. A good indication of official merchandise includes where it is manufactured and the quality of the NFL logo on the item.Beware of phone scams.&nbsp;Last year, during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run, local officials reported receiving complaints of phone scams regarding game ticket purchases, with scammers using phone numbers that appear local with a 913 or 816 area code offering discounted tickets sold online. Once the scammer receives the online payment for the tickets, they block the consumer’s phone number to prevent a call back when the tickets inevitably do not arrive. As a general rule, consumers should not answer the phone when it is an unrecognized number and never give personal information or make a payment over the phone or over an unverified website.Purchase tickets through a verified source.&nbsp;The Chiefs have offered NFL ticket exchange, StubHub and SeatGeek as examples of NFL-approved retailers to purchase or sell tickets to the game. Remember, capacity will be limited to 22,000 spectators and a significant portion of those tickets will be for specially invited front-line health care workers.Door-to-door and 'pop-up stand' sales.&nbsp;Kansas law says that for any purchase of more than $25 made at your home, or any location that is not the seller’s permanent place of business or local address, consumers have three days after the purchase is made to cancel the transaction. Kansas door-to-door statutes regulate these sales from, for example, "pop-up" sidewalk stands and tents in parking lots with Chiefs merchandise. The seller must give written and verbal notice of this right to cancel and contact information if consumers choose to exercise their right to cancel. Consumers who wish to cancel the transaction should do so by certified mail so&nbsp;it can be tracked. Companies are then required to refund the consumer’s money within 10 days of receiving the cancellation. Kansas law also requires the sales receipt to be dated, show the name and address of the seller, be in a large legible font and explain the right to cancel. The receipt must be in the same language used in the sales presentation.Last year, Schmidt’s office participated in coordinated enforcement actions with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Kansas Department of Revenue and the Topeka Police Department against out-of-state pop-up sellers of counterfeit Chiefs merchandise. The actions resulted in enforcement actions being filed, including one that led to the banning of a Tennessee man from doing business in Kansas and $30,000 in civil penalties.Consumers who believe they may have fallen victim to a Super Bowl-related scam should contact their local law enforcement, or call the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division at&nbsp;(800) 432-2310. Efforts to create jobs, bolster the economy and enhance the workforce of Salina and Saline County, are coming to fruition.

Hundreds of jobs are being added and professionals are eyeing a move to town. Meanwhile, enrollment is growing at local learning institutions, meeting employer needs for a highly trained workforce.

Countering so much good that’s happening, however, is a gnawing issue — not enough places to live.

It begs repeat of a saying that sprang from President Andrew Jackson’s election in 1828: “To the victor goes the spoils.”

Folks are moving here to work and learn, but there are not enough vacancies. Residence halls are loaded and there are few options for rental housing that students can afford.

“We need more on-campus housing because there isn’t a whole lot of quality off-campus housing for students,” said Alysia Starkey, PhD, CEO and dean at Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus, Salina.

This year’s freshman class is up approximately 20 percent over the past five years, she said.

“It’s a good problem to have. The community is growing,” said Matt Thompson, PhD, president of Kansas Wesleyan University, with 803 students — 12 percent over last year — and 396 living on campus.

“It’s a confluence of so many good things happening, the vibrancy of downtown Salina,” he said. “It’s attracting students who want to be here.”

KWU requires that students spend their first two years living on campus. Many wish to move off when the requirement is met, Thompson said, but “those opportunities are getting tight right now. It’s just a tighter housing market anyway in Salina.”

Some educational institutions don’t have the luxury of offering housing for their growing enrollments, such as the KU schools of medicine and nursing in downtown Salina, and Salina Technical College.

“Housing is one of those issues that is going to be a problem for the long-term success of any of the colleges in the community,” said Greg Nichols, president of Salina Tech.

Being a non-residential campus, KU students in Salina must secure their own housing, said Lisa Larson, PhD, RN, dean of the KU School of Nursing located in downtown&nbsp;Salina.

While her nursing students have had “reasonable success finding housing” in Salina, she said there are other issues.

“I think the most important criteria for them is a reasonable cost for being a college student for a certain quality of living conditions,” Larson said. “Sometimes they may find something they can afford, but it may not be a desirable place to live. That balance between costs and having a good living quality in a residence probably needs to be explored further in Salina.”

Preferences vary between the nursing school and the KU School of Medicine, also located in downtown Salina.

“With the medical school, you’re more likely to have some of the students who are married and maybe even have families, and some prefer more solitary studying, and may wish to live by themselves,” she said. “Nursing students are more likely to study in groups often and may seek to have roommates and help them study and work on assignments.”

Proximity to class and clinical training sites is important to both schools.

“There are a lot of rentals, but not a lot of desirable rentals, sad to say,” Larson said.

Needs are only going to grow. The nursing program has a total enrollment of 36, but will meet its maximum capacity of 48 students next year, she said, while the med school has 34 students.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not caused much a problem for K-State Poly’s on-campus housing, Starkey said.

“It’s not playing a role,” she said. “Some (students) requested single rooms, but most are in doubles. It’s not having an impact for us.”

On-campus housing demand comes from younger students.

“Freshmen and sophomores like to stay on campus. Juniors and seniors usually go and get housing off campus,” Starkey said. “Access to affordable and quality housing in Salina is lacking, whether it’s apartments or houses.”

K-State Poly has 190 beds on campus, and an enrollment of approximately 600.

Some pupils from Salina Technical College next door, are staying at K-State Poly.

Some 40 K-State students are living in barracks at St. Francis Ministries, formerly St. John’s Military School, in North Salina.

“We have considered whether to build residence halls or campus housing, but we are finding that students would rather live in some type of apartment, where they don’t have as much shared space,” Nichols said.

The technical college has 659 high school students taking dual credit and concurrent classes. Of its adult enrollment of 400 a year, 207 come from out of the area and must rent living space in Salina.

“If they can’t find suitable housing at an affordable rate, they’re probably not coming to Salina Tech,” Nichols said, “and they’re probably looking at some of our peer institutions.”

Despite being competitors, Salina’s colleges are working together for solutions.

K-State is studying the feasibility of adding on-campus housing, Starkey said.

“We’ve also has conversations with a few developers in town about some partnership arrangements between our campus and leasing some space,” she said. “We’re trying to see if it’s better to build more living space on campus or leasing from developers. It’s a great opportunity because our campus sits on an Opportunity Zone.”

Those zones were developed by the federal government to encourage investment in low-income areas, said Eric Brown, president and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

“If someone invests in an Opportunity Zone, either all of some of their capital gains may be deferred,” he said, and the longer those gains are deferred, the lower the tax.

“It will attract investors who have capital gains to mitigate,” Brown said. Local colleges have been working together in their search for housing solutions.

“It’s what I love about Salina. It’ such a collaborative community,” KWU’s Thompson said. “The fact we’re talking about addressing housing need is just another asset for this community.”

The issue is essential, said Nichols of Salina Tech.

“We realize that if we want growth, we’re gonna have to address housing issues,” he said. “If there is no housing available in our community, it’s going to be a deterrent to our enrollment, and in turn, it will affect our workforce.”

Education, Nichols said, “is an important part of our community.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Student housing a hot issue as Salina flourishes

No matter where you stand on bitcoin, we can agree on one thing: It’s polarizing. Some investors believe it’s the way of the future and others think it’s a scam.

However, it’s gaining popularity. It’s likely that the coronavirus pandemic accelerated its acceptance by pushing more retail online. Now, more than one-third of small- and medium-sized businesses will now take bitcoin as payment.<a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200115005482/en/HSB-Survey-Finds-One-Third-Small-Businesses-Accept" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;And even bigger businesses like Microsoft are starting to accept it.<a href="https://www.coindesk.com/microsoft-resumes-bitcoin-payments-after-halt-over-instability" target="_blank">2</a>&nbsp;Also, fans of bitcoin see it as a safeguard against inflation. And since the Federal Reserve has been printing money left and right, some are getting nervous about the future of the dollar.

You might be wondering:&nbsp;Should I jump on the bitcoin bandwagon, or run in the opposite direction?&nbsp;Here are four risks I want you to consider before taking the plunge:&nbsp;

Bitcoin is one of the most volatile investments you could make&nbsp;

Bitcoin goes through incredible spikes and plummets in value. Back in July of 2010, a year after bitcoin was released to the world, a bitcoin was worth only eight cents. The value jumped all over the place until it really started to make some waves in 2017. One bitcoin reached a value of $1,000 early on, then zoomed to $5,000 in October, then doubled to $10,000 in November. By mid-December one bitcoin’s value was almost $20,000. The bubble finally burst, and the value dropped to about $3,500 by November 2018.<a href="https://www.investopedia.com/articles/forex/121815/bitcoins-price-history.asp" target="_blank">3</a>

But bitcoin’s value started to skyrocket again in 2020. Just a couple weeks ago, the value of a bitcoin had hit an all-time high of just under $42,000—but then tanked within 24 hours down to $34,863.<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/11/bitcoin-btc-price-nearly-170-billion-wiped-off-entire-cryptocurrency-market.html" target="_blank">4</a>

Will it continue to grow in value? We don’t know. But the reality is that volatility always equals risk. And risk isn’t a bad thing, but you need to be aware of what it might cost in the end.

Does bitcoin have more in common with the U.S. dollar or with gold? The answer is&nbsp;both. While bitcoin&nbsp;is&nbsp;a currency, Uncle Sam has a different take. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission sees bitcoin as a commodity (like gold), while the IRS treats it like property which means—you guessed it—they can tax it.<a href="https://www.cftc.gov/Bitcoin/index.htm" target="_blank">5</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/virtual-currencies" target="_blank">6</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;

We need to keep in mind that bitcoin is still the new kid on the block. While it’s been around for over 10 years now, we still don’t have any tried and true best practices for building wealth with bitcoin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bitcoin is not regulated by any central bank or nation&nbsp;

Bitcoin has been shrouded in mystery ever since an unknown person named Satoshi Nakamoto released it into the world back in 2009.<a href="https://www.coindesk.com/people/satoshi-nakamoto" target="_blank">7</a>&nbsp;It operates without oversight from any bank or nation-state, meaning it’s exchanged peer to peer. It’s like the Wild West of currencies—there’s no marshal to uphold the law. For some, this is an attractive feature. Others recognize the risk that comes with zero regulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bitcoin is widely used for illegal activity

Since all bitcoin trading is handled anonymously, the cryptocurrency scene is a hot spot for cybercrimes.&nbsp;All sorts of shady things, from blackmail to phishing to Ponzi schemes to deals done on the dark web, take place using bitcoin.<a href="https://bitcoin.org/en/scams#blackmail" target="_blank">8</a>

Of course, there are plenty of upstanding people who use cryptocurrencies as well. But hackers who know a lot more about coding and software than the average Joe can use that knowledge to their advantage—so be careful.&nbsp;
