Fruitful gazing into the north-central Kansas airspace is assured this summer as Salina Regional Airport plays host to 11 aviation events.

A few have public possibilities to watch from a distance, and two will allow visitors to hangars or the airport apron.

Most of the exercises are for training, testing, and-or scientific investigation.

All of the activity equates to people coming to town, said Sylvia Rice, Visit Salina director of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

The busy season will bring an estimated 910 visitors to Salina, each spending an average of 20 days in town, producing approximately $2.6 million in economic impact, according to the Salina Airport Authority.

They will book rooms in hotels, rent vehicles, dine out at restaurants, shop at retail stores, and visit local attractions.

“Every one of these people involved in the exercises and events is a visitor,” Rice said. “These airmen and airwomen, depending on their schedules, do a great job of getting out into the community.”

But Visit Salina won’t promote the military events as attractions.

“Quite frankly, they’re here doing business,” she said. “Obviously, they’re in the sky because that’s the nature of what they do, but we don’t talk a lot about them publicly. We’re not promoting people to run out to the airport and take a look, unless there is a public component.”

The impact on Salina is tremendous, Rice said.

“We’re proud to host these operations,” said JoAnn McClure, sales manager for Visit Salina at the chamber. She serves as a liaison for the visitors and provides lots of information about Salina and Saline County.

“I give them options for their free time, vehicles rentals, what’s available outside of the airport and the weapons ranges,” McClure said.

Reunions from the Schilling Air Force base days, and public events such as Hawgsmoke military aviation competition, and the occasional open house at the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Weapons Range, are openly promoted, Rice said. Regardless of whether these are marquee events, folks notice.

“It’s an attention getter and part of our history,” Rice said, “and there are a lot of people who look up into the sky and actually identify the airplane.”

Two events may allow public visits if COVID19 protocols permit. NASA returns to Salina Regional Airport July 5 through Aug. 31 for intensive study of the Dynamics and Chemistry of the Summer Stratosphere (DCOTSS).

Research targets the North American Monsoon Anticyclone (NAMA) “that dominates circulation of the North-Western Hemisphere,” according to NASA promotional materials.

“Strong convective (thunder) storms from the vertical transport of heat and moisture in the atmosphere,” according to the National Weather Service.

They are not seen in such magnitude or at such high latitudes anywhere else around the globe, according to NASA. “The DCOTSS project directly addresses this knowledge gap.

A media day and NASA Social — open to all ages — will be announced. The public can “Meet and speak with scientists and engineers, learn about NASA missions, and discover with hands-on science fun.”&nbsp;

The event this summer is one of three 8-week science deployments out of Salina. “Made in the Shade,” a B-25J bomber from the Arizona Commemorative Air Force, is set to visit July 7 through 12.

Viewing the aircraft from outside is free, but admission is charged for tours and actual flights. Watch for details, such as times and prices.

●Sierra Nevada Corporation, based in Sparks, Nev., will conduct three weeks of runway and flight performance assessment and testing with the DC-9 airliner. SNC is an aerospace and national security contractor specializing in aircraft modification and integration, space components and systems, and related technology products for cybersecurity and health.

●U.S. Airmen and F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 17th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, plans to execute “Plains Warrior Exercise” May 3 through 16 at SLN. The South Dakota Air National Guard squadron will operate with two to four F-16s, flying sorties and practice combat missions at the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Weapons Range, just southwest of Salina.

●Goldspike 1.0 involves the 303rd Fighter Squadron and 442nd Fighter Wing, for night operations from May 10 through 14, from Salina Regional Airport. The squadron from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, will use up to five A-10s, a C-130, two King Air aircraft, and two CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

●The 302nd Airlift Wing, based at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, is scheduled for a week of training, Sept. 5 through 10, out of Salina Regional Airport. Up to three C-130, four-engine turboprop military transport planes will be used in the training.

●U.S. National Aerobatic Championships, Sept. 15 through 30 at SLN, will bring up to 100 competitors aiming to qualify for the International Aerobatics Championship. The event is not open to the public. However, the action can be viewed for free from Fossett Plaza at the west end of Beechcraft Road, near AvFlight, Salina’s fixed-base operator business. ●Roughly 200 personnel and two aircraft from the 131st Bomb Wing will be based at Salina Regional Airport from Oct. 15 through 25 for expeditionary wing training.

Salina skies booked heavy into autumn

MANHATTAN – Even the most ambitious gardeners realize they can only plant a given amount of crops in the ground they have…right?&nbsp;

Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said there is a way to make more efficient use of space in the garden: growing some of your crops vertically, as in upward.&nbsp;

“Growing vertically not only helps conserve space but can also help prevent disease due to better air movement. Also, harvesting those crops can be easier,” Upham said. “If you have a small garden, growing vertically can allow more crops to be grown.”&nbsp;

Tomato cages are a good example of how crops can be grown vertically, and other crops can be trained to grow up a structure, according to Upham. They include pole beans, peas and such vining crops as cucumbers, melons, squash and gourds.&nbsp;

“Edible-pod and snow peas are better adapted to growing vertically than English (shelling) peas because they have longer vines,” Upham said.&nbsp;

He suggests avoiding ‘bush-type’ vining crops because they are bred to produce shorter vines. “Another thing to keep in mind is that large fruit from vining crops may need to be supported so they don’t damage the vine,” he said.&nbsp;

Upham said bamboo poles and cattle panels are a couple options as supporting structures. Bamboo poles are often used to form a teepee to support pole beans. Cattle panels, often 16 feet long, may need to be cut in half for a better fit, then tied together to form a “pup tent.”&nbsp;

“Crops can then be planted at the base of each panel,” Upham said. “Another way to support a cattle panel is to tie the panel to T-posts so that it will stand upright.”&nbsp;

Transplanting tomatoes early&nbsp;

Upham also has a few tips for those who would like to set their tomato plants up to produce earlier in the year.&nbsp;

“Most people who try to get a jump on the season set their tomatoes out early and hope they do well,” he said. “However, that is often not a good plan because tomatoes have certain requirements to grow well, including an acceptable soil temperature for root growth, and an acceptable air temperature for plant growth and fruit set.”&nbsp;

If conditions cooperate, Upham said a target date of two weeks earlier than normal is something for gardeners to shoot for. Two keys to look for include:&nbsp;

●Root growth&nbsp;– Tomatoes need a soil temperature of at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit to do well. Plastic mulch can be used to warm the soil, but allow several days to raise the soil temperature. Check the soil temperature 2 ½ inches deep at 11 a.m., or use the average of temperatures taken before and after your work day.

●Air temperature&nbsp;– Plants must be protected from frost. Hot caps or water teepees can be placed over young plants to protect them, and provide a higher average temperature that encourages growth. If the temperature goes below 55 degrees overnight, tomato flowers may not set. The plant is not hurt, but the blossom will not set fruit, or will set fruit that is misshapen.&nbsp;

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining home landscapes. Growing up: Vertical gardening provides more room for crops

Bullseye! That’s what we say when we hit the target right in the center. Today we’ll meet a couple of first-generation farmers who are using the name Bullseye and hitting their target of producing and marketing value-added agricultural products.&nbsp;

Laurie and Joel Bruce are the owners of Bruce’s Bullseye Farms near Augusta. Laurie grew up at Potwin. She met Joel while working in El Dorado, and they married, moving to follow his job in the pipeline industry.&nbsp;

“We came back to Kansas,” Laurie said. “This is where we wanted to put down our roots.”&nbsp;

Joel got a job with Kansas Gas Service. After being a stay-at-home mom, Laurie earned an education degree at Wichita State and became a teacher.&nbsp;

They knew they wanted to live in the country. In 2000, they bought a house and one acre in Butler County. In 2013, they bought an 80-acre tract and expanded that a few years later.&nbsp;

“We got a horse and did hay and crops on shares with a neighbor,” Laurie said. That first horse was named Bullseye. “He was a great horse,“ Laurie said. “Now we have a small cowherd.”&nbsp;

Joel and Laurie were befriended by an older lady living nearby. “She gave me some sand plum jelly,” Laurie said.&nbsp;

“I told her, ‘That’s the best jelly I’ve ever had.’ She asked me if I’d like to learn how to make it and I said, ‘Sure,’” Laurie said. “She showed me everything, from how to pick them, how to clean them, how to process them, and even where to find them growing wild.”&nbsp;

In 2016, Joel and Laurie moved to the farm outside Augusta. She continued to make sand plum jelly.&nbsp;

Soon after that, a friend of Laurie’s invited her to sell some of her jelly at a fall pumpkin patch nearby. “Oh no,” Laurie said. “I’ll just come give some away.” Her friend insisted that she would set up a table and Laurie should come try to sell her product. “I brought 50 jars of sand plum jelly and two dozen loaves of pumpkin bread, and I sold out of all of it,” Laurie said. “That’s when I realized there was demand for these types of products.” She started making other types of jams and jellies as well.&nbsp;

Laurie and Joel launched their own value-added products business. They decided to name it Bruce’s Bullseye Farms, in honor of their first horse and the fact that Joel is a hunter. In their early days of marriage, Joel’s deer hunting helped put meat on the table.&nbsp;

Today, Bruce’s Bullseye Farms offers a line of homemade jams and jellies, including the original sand plum jelly. The company also offers other products such as apple pie jam, candied&nbsp;jalapeños, apple butter, sunflower-seed cookies, and a sweet and spicy spread that Laurie calls Ozsome sauce. “I love the Wizard of Oz,” Laurie said.&nbsp;

Laurie wants to promote other entrepreneurs as well. She offers other people’s products such as local honey and BBQ sauce. She also assembles and ships gift baskets.&nbsp;

The Bruces continue to expand their business. They’ve purchased a commercial building in nearby Leon. In addition to the wild sand plums, Laurie purchased 65 sand plum bare root trees from the Kansas Forest Service and planted them orchard style.&nbsp;

“We want to sell everything we can from our own farm,” Laurie said. “We want to offer farm-to-fork food products.” Their business benefited when listed on the Shop Kansas Farms website during the pandemic. They have also joined the From the Land of Kansas program of the Kansas Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;

“We’ve shipped products coast to coast, from California to Florida,” Laurie said. It’s an impressive record for a woman from the rural community of Potwin, population 449 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

She continued to make sand plum jelly.&nbsp;Soon after that, a friend of Laurie’s invited her to sell some of her jelly at a fall pumpkin patch nearby. “Oh no,” Laurie said. “I’ll just come give some away.” Her friend insisted that she would set up a table and Laurie should come try to sell her product. “I brought 50 jars of sand plum jelly and two dozen loaves of pumpkin bread, and I sold out of all of it,” Laurie said. “That’s when I realized there was demand for these types of products.” She started making other types of jams and jellies as well.&nbsp;Laurie and Joel launched their own value-added products business. They decided to name it Bruce’s Bullseye Farms, in honor of their first horse and the fact that Joel is a hunter. In their early days of marriage, Joel’s deer hunting helped put meat on the table.&nbsp;<figure>

The company also offers other products such as apple pie jam, candied&nbsp;jalapeños, apple butter, sunflower-seed cookies, and a sweet and spicy spread that Laurie calls Ozsome sauce. “I love the Wizard of Oz,” Laurie said.&nbsp;Laurie wants to promote other entrepreneurs as well. She offers other people’s products such as local honey and BBQ sauce. She also assembles and ships gift baskets.&nbsp;The Bruces continue to expand their business. They’ve purchased a commercial building in nearby Leon. In addition to the wild sand plums, Laurie purchased 65 sand plum bare root trees from the Kansas Forest Service and planted them orchard style.&nbsp;“We want to sell everything we can from our own farm,” Laurie said. “We want to offer farm-to-fork food products.” Their business benefited when listed on the Shop Kansas Farms website during the pandemic. They have also joined the From the Land of Kansas program of the Kansas Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;“We’ve shipped products coast to coast, from California to Florida,” Laurie said. It’s an impressive record for a woman from the rural community of Potwin, population 449 people. “We’re collecting videos about many different types of career paths,” said Nick Pahls, Coronado math coach. “We need a mix of videos about careers in skilled trades, requiring certifications or four-year degrees - a broad range of careers to help increase students’ awareness of possibilities.”

While students actually begin planning their career pathways in middle school, early preparation for that starts in elementary school. Career fairs and other activities are held in elementary schools to help fifth graders explore the vast array of career choices and interests. At Coronado Elementary, school staff, together with the building Site Council, are planning a fifth-grade career fair.

The videos should be no longer than seven minutes, must be submitted by April 23 and should include:

University students, staff should be aware of IRS impersonation email scam

ABILENE -- Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for a Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on the last Friday of March. 

A total donation of $391, was presented to a local family. The Abilene home, that the family was living in, was recently destroyed by a fire, along with all of their belongings, and pets were also lost. 

The Jeans Day was organized by the MHS Employer of Choice committee.

According to the National Weather Service, the peak severe weather season is during the spring months of March, April, and May. FTC: Prepare for severe spring weather with tips you can share

Local businesswoman Peggy DeBey is a connector of people and teller of stories.

Those connections can be seen in the display area of The Flower Nook, 208 East Iron. DeBey and her husband, Wayne, have owned the 45-year downtown institution for 39 years.

"I've always been very arty. I was on the Arts and Humanities board, and so I met a lot of wonderful people. Salina does good for very talented fine arts people, but they don't do good for starting-out people," DeBey said.

DeBey, who at the time was teaching marketing at a local college, talked to her husband, Wayne, about what they could do for the starting-out people and others who display creativity in their work but might not be considered artists by mainstream arts standards.

"So I said, 'Wayne, let's do this and let's see if we can help people,'" DeBey explained. 

"Instead of calling it 'art,' we started calling it 'artisan' because it's sewing. It's collections. It's jewelry. It's not like fine art on the back wall like a gallery would be," she said.

At one point, the couple had the artisan displays in the building they own next door to the Flower Nook, but attempting to assist customers and visitors in both locations proved to be too much, so the artisan work was moved to the front area of The Flower Nook, DeBey explained.

"It's been really great because it marries very nicely" with the flower and plant part of The Flower Nook, she explained.

DeBey said that during the five years The Flower Nook has been offering the artisan series, they also have featured a variety of collections, including vintage cigar boxes, a selection of Steve Hanson's guitars, and salt and pepper shakers.

While there are hundreds of artisan in the state, convincing them to be brave and display their creative works in The Flower Nook takes some doing.

"I have become a stalker as far as finding people because it's hard. You have to convince people," DeBey said and chuckled. "I've had to court people like the dating thing for over a year sometimes to get them brave enough to give me something."

DeBey said The Flower Nook initiates a contract with each of the artisans it features an DeBey discusses with the artisans what The Flower Nook can do for them.

"We do a lot to promote the artisans. For me, it's not just a total make money. We make films and we put them other places such as newsletters. We always try to connect people with people," DeBey explained. "I've rarely had someone say 'you didn't do good by me.'"

DeBey said many of the featured artisans have also benefitted from First Friday arts events at The Flower Nook.

Until the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities coordinated a multi-location arts event on the first Friday of each month and The Flower Nook was a regular participant. 

"That was extra fun because then they got to be seen and people talked to them," DeBey said. "And then I realized that my customers really liked to meet the people."

Bringing artisans and customers together in the First Friday format allowed for a more personal connection. Customers enjoyed hearing from the artisans about why they do what they do and how they create their works. The customers, should they purchase pieces from the artisans, also had the opportunity to have the pieces signed, DeBey said. 

"Oh my gosh, it was such a wonderful feeling to watch that connection happening," she exclaimed.

DeBey said the works of at least 15 artisans are on display at any one time, however, at Christmastime, that number jumps to about 30.

Playing off the old adage that "variety is the spice of life," DeBey said the artisans who are showcased are changed regularly, with the majority of artisans signing a three month contract.

"Rarely do they come back. It's not because I'm opposed to that. It's just that I realize that my public is not going to come in and see the same thing," DeBey explained.

In fact, to change things up further, cosmetic changes are made to the Flower Nook on a regular basis, she added. 

There is one artisan display that has stood the test of time, however.

"Alpaca we've had for four years in a row. He's my only person that I have an exclusive contract with in Salina," DeBey said. "We expand it when it's winter because of all of their stuff." 

Some of the items from North 40 Alpacas include sweaters, socks, scarves, and other gear to help keep people warm.

DeBey said another group that occasionally has items featured at The Flower Nook are the nuns from the St. Joseph's Motherhouse in Concordia.

"They're such great women. I've had them here off and on. They brought in some crocheted dolls and now we have their quilts," she said.

Among other artisan works on display so far this year at The Flower Nook is a colorful collection from Janet's Flower Garden. Janet Stanley "creates expressions of sentiment using pressed flowers, postcards, and other paper memorabilia, or calligraphy," according to information with the display. Most of the flowers used are from Stanley's own garden and she presses them herself.

Flowers not your thing, how about a wine bottle candle from Prairie Fire Winery in Paxico? Prairie Fire uses empty bottles from its tasting room in the creation of the candles. The candles are made with 100 percent grown natural soy wax.

"As a part of our sustainability mission, we have never sent a bottle from our tasting room to the landfill. It took over two years to develop the candles to achieve our goals, ensuring we could source only the best ingredients to make the most natural product possible," information with the Prairie Fire Candle display noted.

"His whole operation is recycled. He puts his candles in the wine bottles, he recycles the material to make the corks, the labels are recycled, the tin has been recycled, he grows the soybeans for those candles," DeBey explained.

After a career in international law and business with AT&amp;T an Pfizer, Kristin Blomquist founded Gratitude Soapery, a business that would both use her career knowledge and be consistent with her goals "to live intentionally, to do what we can to help the environment, and to find ways to practice gratitude." She opened Gratitude Soapery in July 2019 selling vegan friendly, cruelty free bars of soap, according to information with her display. She has since expanded Gratitude Soapery to include bath fizz, face masks, lip conditioner, and a line of all-natural facial soaps.

Other recent artisan offerings included a variety of jewelry and ceramics. 

Over the past five years, other featured items have included saddles, furniture made from horns, and men's bowling balls.

"Recently, I've been trying to do more with the people who have products that have stories," DeBey said.

As an example, she mentioned the wooden items produced by inmates at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility.

"Yes, the products are nice, but that's not the story behind that. That's what they're doing to give those people a trade when they get out," DeBey said.

The Flower Nook: Connecting people and telling stories

The City of Salina has announced a number of roadway crack sealing projects for next week.

Shears of Salina will seal cracks on the following City of Salina streets,
weather permitting:

Residents will be asked
to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place
generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. &nbsp;Access to properties within work zones will be
maintained at all times. &nbsp;“Road Work
Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane
closures are to be expected. &nbsp;Motorists
are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of
the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and
joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance
component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. &nbsp;Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water
from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in
reducing a number of pavement problems which include:&nbsp; crack spreading; formation of voids under
pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action;
alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. &nbsp;Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the
Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no
less often than every seven years. &nbsp;Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets
will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major
component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital
improvement program.

Through April 4: Lindsborg Collects… Lindsborg Art in Downtown Lindsborg

The Lindsborg Collects Exhibition showcases the privately owned art collections of local residents with a focus on artists who have a Lindsborg or Bethany College connection. The show will be open at 105 N. Main Street in downtown Lindsborg from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Through May 23: 123rd Annual Midwest Art Exhibition at Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery

The 123rd annual Midwest Art Exhibition will feature works by Bethany College graduates Richard and Tom Klocke of Lawrence; mixed media woodcuts by Salina native Jim Sherraden of White Creeks, Tennessee; art by members of the Sandzén Gallery’s Show Committee (Cary Brinegar, Wayne Conyers, Maleta Forsberg, Michael Jilg, Elizabeth Liljegren, Ron Michael, Karla Prickett, and Rose Marie Wallen); and selections from the Dave Woolard Collection of Hays.

The gallery will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-5 p.m.

Through April 4: Juried Student Art Exhibition at Mingenback Art Center

The Department of Art and Digital Media at Bethany College will host a corridor exhibition at Mingenback Art Center of artwork created by local women art instructors alongside the traditional juried exhibition of artwork created by Bethany College students, judged by visual artist Ruth Moritz.

Easter Sunday, April 4 at 3 p.m.: Handel’s Messiah at Presser Hall Auditorium

The Bethany Oratorio Society is planning a full performance of Handel’s Messiah on Easter Sunday with the full Oratorio Society Chorus and Orchestra. To facilitate social distancing, the chorus and orchestra, who will all be wearing special singing masks, will be spread throughout the Presser Hall Auditorium. This event will be livestreamed, and if the COVID-19 situation allows, a limited number of tickets for balcony seating will be available at the door on the day of the event. The show will be open at 105 N. Main Street in downtown Lindsborg from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.Through May 23: 123rd Annual Midwest Art Exhibition at Birger Sandzen Memorial GalleryThe 123rd annual Midwest Art Exhibition will feature works by Bethany College graduates Richard and Tom Klocke of Lawrence; mixed media woodcuts by Salina native Jim Sherraden of White Creeks, Tennessee; art by members of the Sandzén Gallery’s Show Committee (Cary Brinegar, Wayne Conyers, Maleta Forsberg, Michael Jilg, Elizabeth Liljegren, Ron Michael, Karla Prickett, and Rose Marie Wallen); and selections from the Dave Woolard Collection of Hays.The gallery will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-5 p.m.Through April 4: Juried Student Art Exhibition at Mingenback Art CenterThe Department of Art and Digital Media at Bethany College will host a corridor exhibition at Mingenback Art Center of artwork created by local women art instructors alongside the traditional juried exhibition of artwork created by Bethany College students, judged by visual artist Ruth Moritz.Easter Sunday, April 4 at 3 p.m.: Handel’s Messiah at Presser Hall AuditoriumThe Bethany Oratorio Society is planning a full performance of Handel’s Messiah on Easter Sunday with the full Oratorio Society Chorus and Orchestra. To facilitate social distancing, the chorus and orchestra, who will all be wearing special singing masks, will be spread throughout the Presser Hall Auditorium. This event will be livestreamed, and if the COVID-19 situation allows, a limited number of tickets for balcony seating will be available at the door on the day of the event.
