A local band is among the headliners for the 45th Smoky Hill River Festival on Labor Day weekend.

Regional favorite Sunset Sinners is scheduled to bring its Whisky Barrel Rock, a fusion of red dirt country, southern rock, and '70s classic rock, to the river festival Eric Stein Stage at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

Other river festival headliners recently announced by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities include Cowboy Mouth and Phantom Blues Band. Information about those bands appears below.

The Smoky Hill River Festival is scheduled for&nbsp;Sept. 2-5 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

"It should be a cool deal," said Blake Blackim, Sunset Sinners' drummer. "The cool thing for us, I think it gives us exposure to a lot of other folks that probably may not be as familiar with us, that come to the river festival that may not attend some of the other venues we play."

The Sunset Sinners -- comprised of Chris Brungardt, Tony Bowell, Brad Johnson, and Blackim -- will be going into the river festival after releasing the group's first album earlier in the summer, Blackim said. They also are scheduled to play at the Country Stampede in Topeka in June.

The growing popularity of the Sunset Sinners and their music is evident on several levels.

The group's first single and music video, Always Time for One More Beer, has proven to be quite popular. Blackim said the video on Tuesday hit one million views.

Additionally, the Sunset Sinners' music is playing frequently in Australia and Europe, where the group has developed quite a following, Blackim said. One of the group's songs/videos that has garnered quite a bit of attention is Old Glory,&nbsp; which was released in March 5. Blackim described the song as a patriotic ballad.

"The premise behind the song is three stories intertwined into one about having the courage to sign up to serve the country," Blackim said. "It's a really cool, kind of heavy hitter song and music video. It's not political. It's just about honoring the flag."

The video includes three people who actually served.

"What's crazy is, they're playing it overseas," he said. "There'll be people from overseas that served in like the French military, and they'll be like 'this is really cool what you guys do. We appreciate what you guys do.' It's kind of cool how they do appreciate it overseas."

While the Sunset Sinners' music gets a lot of play overseas, it's a different story in the United States. Blackim explained that the way music gets airtime in the United States is different.

"It's kind of a different ballgame in the United States," he said. "It's harder to get your product disseminated on mainstream commercial radio in the United States because it's just a different animal."

Blackim said that on Wednesday, the band signed on with a music agency/label in Nashville that will help get the Sunset Sinners' music on U.S. radio stations.

"They have numerous services available. The main focus at this point is them taking us and promoting us like crazy. The first song that they're going to work with to get out there is Old Glory," Blackim said.

A rowdy alternative-rock band from New Orleans that last mesmerized audiences at the 2001 river festival, Cowboy Mouth is back with their high-energy performance and unique blend of pop, big-easy blues, soul, punk, and redemptive rock 'n' roll, according to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. The band is scheduled to take the Eric Stein Stage at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 3.

An internationally renowned, two-time Grammy Award-winning group, the Los Angeles-based Phantom Blues Band explores everything from Texas blues to Memphis soul, with an injection of reggae for good measure, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities noted in a news release about the headliners. Phantom Blues Band is scheduled to perform on the Eric Stein Stage at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 4.

About the Smoky Hill River Festival

After a year's hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the river festival will feature four live stages, 150 visual artists, 30-plus Food Row vendors, a vibrant Artyopolis kid’s area, and more, according to Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. 

The river festival's hours of operation are as follows. Sept. 2 from 4 to 10 p.m., Sept. 3-4 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is by four-day festival wristband, which is $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. Daily wristbands will be available same-day only at select entrance gates for $10. Children ages 11 and under get in free. Wristbands are scheduled to go on sale on July 26 at more than 40 Salina locations and approximately 20 cities statewide.

Weather History for Wednesday, April 21, from the National Weather Service in Wichita: In 2001, at 9:15 p.m., an F4 tornado struck Hoisington.

The initial touchdown occurred 1 mile southwest of Hoisington. The tornado rapidly reached F3 intensity as it entered the west side of town. Moving northeast at 20 mph, it strengthened to an F4 in 2 to 3 minutes.

 While crossing northwest Hoisington, the tornado carved a two-mile-long, two-block-wide path of almost complete destruction. There was one fatality and 28 injuries. The tornado destroyed 182 homes, 12 businesses and tore a roof off the hospital. It also severed power to much of the region. 

As the tornado exited the north side of town, it weakened rapidly, causing F1 to F2 damage as it approached Deception Creek three miles northeast of town. After crossing the creek, it suddenly turned toward the northwest where it damaged two farmsteads shortly before dissipating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County: 7 new COVID-19 cases, 5,996 of 6,154 recovered

The Kansas Highway Patrol announced today the promotion of an area trooper.

Master Trooper Jonathan Eilert has been promoted to lieutenant and will serve Troop C in north-central Kansas. Troop C is headquartered in Salina.

Eilert attended the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy and graduated with Class No. 48 in 2008. His first duty station was Riley County in Troop C. He transferred to Jewell County in January 2014 and then transferred to Mitchell County in December 2014, where he has served until his promotion to lieutenant. In 2013, Eilert was promoted to Master Trooper.

Prior to joining the Kansas Highway Patrol, Eilert served as a Master-at-Arms with the United States Navy for five years.

A native of Beloit, Eilert graduated from St. John's Catholic High School. He graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in criminal justice.

Comfort Heating & Air seeks Good Neighbor Award nominees

A freeze warning has been issued for counties in our area early Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a freeze warning in effect from midnight to 9 a.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 26 are expected.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Frost advisory issued for Marion County

A teen driver was injured in a three-vehicle accident just east of Southeast of Saline Tuesday afternoon.

An eastbound 2004 Ford Explorer driven by a 16-year-old boy from Salina, was stopped on Kansas Highway 4 (K-4) waiting to turn north onto S. Cunningham Road shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. A second vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Rogue driven by a 16-year-old girl from Gypsum, pulled up and stopped behind the Explorer. 

Soldan said another 16-year-old girl from Gypsum, who was driving a 2005 Pontiac Bonneville, failed to stop and rear-ended the Rogue, pushing it into the Explorer. She was taken by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said.

Police are looking for a man who stole a car that was parked at a north Salina business Tuesday.

An officer was sent to the Blue Beacon Truck Wash, 2303 N. Ninth Street, at 12:15 p.m. An employee there reported that he had driven his mother's car to work and had parked it with the keys still in it in the employee parking area on the west side of the business, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The 2004 Pontiac Grand Am with Kansas license plate of 921NRC belonged to a 61-year-old Salina woman.

Surveillance video showed a white male wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans, brown shoes, and a black ball cap with a “B” on the front walking south in the parking lot. The subject looked in the passenger side of the car and a short time later got into the driver side door and drove south out of the parking lot.

Total loss is estimated at $2,500, Forrester noted.

Salina Area Technical College is the recipient of a Matrix Wand, a package of equipment and software that can create a 3D map of an automobile, quickly showing repair technicians what parts are out of position after a collision.

At an event on Friday morning, The Matrix Wand company, which is housed inside Salina Vortex at 1725 Vortex Avenue in Salina, presented the college with a complete Wand system, along with a Mini Cooper the company had used early on in the development of the system. Total value of the donation is estimated at $22,000.

The Matrix Wand gets its name from the “wand” that houses a digital camera on each end of a bar, about three feet apart and angled inward so they have overlapping fields of view. Photos from each camera are imported into FenderBolt software that uses the photos to measure the distance between different points on the car and compares those measurements to a database for the vehicle, showing points that are out of alignment by as little as a few millimeters.

Such precision is increasingly important as cars and the systems in them become increasingly complex, said Sergio Correa, who graduated from Salina Tech’s Auto Collision Repair program in 2001, and is now Director of Support and Technical Training for the company.

He explained that modern vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems – ADAS for short – rely on a suite of cameras and sensors for tasks such as collision avoidance or keeping a vehicle in the proper lane. If a vehicle’s sensors or cameras are out of alignment by even a few millimeters, the ADAS systems may not work correctly.

“For Salina Tech, being able to have a Matrix Wand system gives them a huge advantage, being able to train their students with state-of-the-art technology,” Correa said. “These students will now know how to use this type of tool when they go out into the field and they start working in collision shops. They’ll be able to bring in a new aspect that many shops today don’t have.”

“The donation of The Matrix Wand system to the Auto Collision Repair program is great for the students, for them to have the latest technology in our industry,” said Auto Collision Repair instructor Brian Hitchens. “It gives them kind of a one-up on any of their competition in getting their career started.”

“We’ve had a partnership with Salina Tech for many years,” said company President Travis Young. “They’ve let us use their shops for training, and for people who fly in to see a demonstration. This is our way of paying it forward. It makes sense for us to have a permanent unit at Salina Tech for students to use.”

The donation is a great example of the way Salina Tech can help local businesses innovate and grow, and how such partnerships help students, said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. Recent obituaries

After frigid temperatures of this past winter, many gardeners were more than a little eager to get out and plant once the weather turned warmer. Mother Nature, however, had one word for that eagerness: "WHOA!"

The National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings for much of Kansas tonight. Throughout much of central and north-central Kansas, overnight lows tonight are expected to be in the mid- to upper-20s.

That frigid news had gardeners scrambling. But they weren't the only ones. Local garden centers that have been filled with beautiful, colorful plants also have been working to protect their stock from the freezing temperatures.

Ben Miller, owner of Stutzmans Greenhouse, said his staff hauled four truck loads of plants from the Salina garden center back to the company's Pleasantview facility in recent days. The local garden center at the corner of S. Ninth Street and W. Cloud Street, is looking quite sparse now. It is closed temporarily until the plants can be returned from Pleasantview later in the week once the weather warms again.

Tom Jones and his staff were busy this afternoon covering plants in the garden center at Ace Home Center, 321 S. Broadway. Jones, owner of Ace Home Center, said he's had a heater in the greenhouse for the past week.

"We've been heating every night for the past week on and off. There's been a couple of nights we haven't had to heat. Those bedding plants like it a little warmer, so we keep it up to 50 to 60 degrees in the greenhouse at night," Jones said.

Other plants and trees were brought into a covered area adjacent to the south end of the store. The remainder of the plants were being covered by Jones and his staff.

"This stuff is a little heartier, so we'll put a double layer of plastic over them," Jones said of some of the perennials. "That should protect them tonight and maybe tomorrow night. They're talking about frost possibly tomorrow night, too."

The greenhouse at Waters Hardware, 460 S. Ohio Street, was filled to the brim with colorful plants this afternoon. Mike Fuller, store manager, said his staff had brought in as many plants as they could fit in the greenhouse and still keep the pathways open.

"We get plants in every day, so that has made it even more of a challenge," Fuller said. "But we've brought in most all of what we could bring in and have covered the rest."

Miller said the Stutzmans staff had been watching the hourly forecast closely before deciding what to do with the plants.

"What we picked up would have been at risk even if it was covered with the temperatures dropping down to 27 or 28," Miller said. "There's no question that we will have some damage, but we've been able to save most of it."

The weather also has put a chill in Stutzmans plant sale to benefit the Salina Rescue Mission, but Miller is determined to make the benefit sale a success. Originally, 20 percent of all sales on Wednesday through Saturday were to go to the Salina Rescue Mission. With so many of the plants moved to Pleasantview, however, Miller told Salina Post that he intends to extend the benefit sale through Sunday.

All three men said gardeners should cover non-cold-hearty plants that are already in the ground.

"When you get this frost and freeze, just cover your tender plants up," Jones said.

Miller suggested covering plants with a blanket or cloth, and do so early enough that at least a bit of the warmer temperature can be retained before the sun goes down.

"If you have planters, just slide them into the garage," Miller said.

"If you have a question about whether to cover a plant, just do it," he said.

KDOT honors trooper who assisted driver after accident

ASSARIA -- A small earthquake shook part of southern Saline County this morning.

The Kansas Geological Survey reported that a 2.3 magnitude temblor struck southeast of Assaria at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday. The quake was centered just south of E. Hedberg Road and just east of S. Holmes Road.

The City of Salina Community Relations Division, in partnership with Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas, announced today that it has been awarded a total of nearly $3.1 million in assistance from Kansas Housing Corporation to assist eligible Salinans who are at imminent risk of eviction and individuals who have lost housing to quickly regain housing stability. 

The funds are made available through the Emergency Solutions Grant program through the federal CARES Act.

Salinans struggling to cover rent and utility payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic could qualify for up to six months of emergency assistance. Salina residents can apply for assistance through the COVID-19 Housing and Rental Assistance Program administered through a partnership between the City of Salina Community Relations Division and Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas.

Tenants may qualify for the COVID-19 Housing and Rental Assistance Program if they:

●Are literally homeless OR at-risk of homelessness

●Earn no more than 50% of their area’s median income

●Have the ability to work or garner a legal means of income

To apply, Salina tenants should complete the online inquiry form at <a href="http://www.ccnks.org/salinahousing">ccnks.org/salinahousing</a> or stop by Catholic Charities at 1500 S. Ninth Street to complete the inquiry.

This is a step-down assistance program, meaning participants work to become financially independent. Participants meet regularly with a case manager to achieve employment and budgeting goals, ensuring they are able to live independently or with minimal assistance after six months.

“After the many hardships of the past year, we are grateful for this opportunity to partner with the City of Salina. This program will be such a blessing for individuals and families who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads,” said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. “Our goal is to help keep families in their homes and walk with them on their journeys as they get back on their feet.”

Scammers are doubling down on their efforts to scam people out of their money and personal information. That’s why the FTC and the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) are teaming up to remind you: No matter what anyone tells you, you can’t buy COVID-19 vaccines online and there’s no out-of-pocket cost to get the shots.

Here are some ways to avoid a vaccine-related scam:

●Ignore online ads, social media posts, or phone calls from people offering to sell you the COVID-19 vaccine.&nbsp;You can’t buy it — anywhere. The vaccine is only available at federal- and state-approved locations.

 ●Don’t pay to sign up for the vaccine.&nbsp;Anyone who asks for a payment to put you on a list, make an appointment for you, or reserve a spot in line is a scammer.

●Don’t pay out of pocket for a vaccine&nbsp;— not before, during, or after your appointment. That’s either a scam or a mistake. If you’re insured, the vaccination site might bill your insurance company for an administration fee. If you’re not insured, there’s a fund set up with the&nbsp;Health Resources &amp; Services Administration&nbsp;(HRSA — part of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) where sites can recover their administrative costs. Either way, though, they’re not supposed to bill you or charge a co-pay.

 ●Never share your personal, financial, or health information with people you don’t know.&nbsp;No one from a vaccine distribution site, health care provider’s office, pharmacy, or health care payer, like a private insurance company or Medicare, will call, text, or email you asking for your credit card or bank account number to sign you up to get the vaccine. And remember, you’re not required to give your Social Security number to a vaccination site. You shouldn’t be turned away.

●Contact a trusted source for information.&nbsp;Check with state or local health departments to learn when and how to get the COVID-19 vaccine. You can also talk with your health care provider or pharmacist.

●Don’t post your vaccination card to your social media account. Your vaccination card has information on it including your full name, date of birth, where you got your vaccine, and the dates you got it. When you post it to Facebook, Instagram, or to some other social media platform, you may be handing valuable information over to someone who could use it for identity theft.
