One year ago: Tens of thousands rallied in cities from Australia to Europe to honor George Floyd and voice support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Massive, peaceful protests took place nationwide to demand police reform, as services for George Floyd were held in North Carolina, near his birthplace. Thousands of people again took to the streets and parks of New York City to protest police brutality; police pulled back on enforcing an 8 p.m. curfew that had led to confrontations. Police in Seattle used flash bang devices and pepper spray to disperse a crowd of protesters on the ninth consecutive day of George Floyd protests in the city. Brazil's government stopped publishing a running total of coronavirus deaths and infections; the country's last official numbers showed that it had the third-highest number of deaths in the world. The coronavirus pandemic and its lockdowns left Omaha Beach in Normandy largely deserted for the observance of the D-Day anniversary.

Washburn University announces spring 2021 Dean's List

Part of W. Cloud Street will close on Monday for utility work.

On Monday, AT&amp;T will close the westbound lane of W. Cloud Street west of the S. Ninth Street intersection to service their facilities, according to information from the City of Salina. 

During the work, left turns from northbound S. Ninth Street to westbound W. Cloud Street and from eastbound W. Cloud Street to northbound S. Ninth Street will be restricted to facilitate the rest of the traffic movements through the intersection. 

Through traffic is encouraged to avoid the intersection altogether during the work. 

Weather permitting, the work will proceed around the clock and will be completed on Friday, the city noted.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) has announced that anglers can fish without a Kansas fishing license at public waters on Saturday and Sunday thanks to “Free Fishing Days.”

Each year, KDWPT designates one weekend when everyone can fish without a Kansas fishing license. All you need is a pole and a place to go! Free Fishing Days celebrates National Fishing and Boating Week – a week dedicated to recognizing the importance of recreational boating and fishing.

KDWPT stocks many community lakes through its Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP). More than 90 percent of the community lakes in Kansas are enrolled in the program and do not require any additional fishing licenses. A few community lakes not in the CFAP program require local fees to fish from the shore or a boat. A list of CFAP lakes is available in the&nbsp;2021 Kansas Fishing Regulations Summary&nbsp;and the&nbsp;2021 Kansas Fishing Atlas.

If you’ll be taking part in Free Fishing Days, here are some tips to help you plan your weekend outing:

For nearly 50 years, the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank has been helping those in need.

The agency will mark 50 years of service on July 1, and plans a year-long celebration. To kick off a year-long celebration, the food bank has partnered with the Smoky Hill Museum to showcase its history and accomplishments over the years.&nbsp; 

Since 1971, the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank has strived to meet the needs of those in Saline County with dignity and respect, primarily offering food and financial assistance.&nbsp; The display reflects the Food Bank’s anniversary theme:&nbsp;Filling Pantries….Filling Lives, and will be open to visitors now through the end of July.

Food bank Executive Director Karen Couch said, “We are so delighted to have this opportunity to share the story of our agency and give the community the chance to celebrate this milestone with us.  It’s an exciting time at the food bank. We are grateful to the museum staff and our friends at Fili Creative for collaborating with us to bring this display to fruition.”

 </figure>For nearly 50 years, the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank has been helping those in need.The agency will mark 50 years of service on July 1, and plans a year-long celebration. To kick off a year-long celebration, the food bank has partnered with the Smoky Hill Museum to showcase its history and accomplishments over the years.&nbsp; Since 1971, the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank has strived to meet the needs of those in Saline County with dignity and respect, primarily offering food and financial assistance.&nbsp; The display reflects the Food Bank’s anniversary theme:&nbsp;Filling Pantries….Filling Lives, and will be open to visitors now through the end of July.Food bank Executive Director Karen Couch said, “We are so delighted to have this opportunity to share the story of our agency and give the community the chance to celebrate this milestone with us. Food Bank kicks off 50th anniversary with Smoky Hill Museum display

Organic abstractions and poetry come together in the latest exhibit in the Salina Public Library.

Artist Kayla Borell’s exhibit “Soil Take Me Home” is on display in Salina Public Library’s Gallery 708 through July 23. 

The public is welcome to view the exhibit during library hours — 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.&nbsp;The library is located at 301 W. Elm Street.

The show includes nine paintings that feature organic abstractions of plants, soil and organic forms and nine hand-stitched, self-written poems on handmade paper.

Borell’s paintings use color, texture and lines to empower a diversity of exploration and experimentation of materials working together on a painted surface. Each piece expresses an understanding of growth, reincarnation, discovery in one’s identity, and a reconciliation to a particular emotion. 

Borell has always been an emotional person, but she didn’t know what to do with it until she turned to art which became a way of life. Now she uses that idea in her creative process to work through understanding different emotions from personal experiences, memories and places in life.

Borell attended Bethany College (2019) earning a B.A. in Studio Art: Painting/Ceramics. As well as majoring in Visual Art Administration and is receiving her M.A. in Arts Management and Leadership at Wichita State University. Currently, Borell is the full-time Director of Education at the Salina Art Center. She is an adjunct art instructor at Bethany College, teaching ceramics and intro-level art classes. She enjoys books, plants, and home improvement projects.

Local artist blends organic forms and poetry

The City of Salina has announced an additional recycling option for the residents of the community. 

“We’ve been talking with the Recyclops management team for the past several months and look forward to Recyclops helping us further reduce waste that would have otherwise ended up in our landfill,” said Jim Teutsch, director of Public Works. All materials will be delivered to the Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center (SDRC).

Recyclops, a gig economy service for recyclable materials, launched operations and a new customer sign-up campaign in Salina with the goal of bringing curbside recycling to more local-area residents. Now, through Recyclops’ unique model that uses a tech-driven, smart-routing app and local drivers, residents will be able to subscribe for recycling services to have recyclable materials picked up from their homes every other week for $10 per month.

“J &amp; N Recycling has done a wonderful job maintaining curbside recycling collection service in Salina. Now through our partnership, Recyclops wants to make the service available to many more Salina area residents. People that don’t have the time to deliver their recyclables to a drop off center, people that are not able to drive to a drop off center due to medical or other conditions, and others that don’t wish to deal with getting their vehicle messy are just some of the folks that choose our services around the country. Recyclops exists to make recycling as accessible, convenient, affordable and easy to all,” said Ryan Smith, founder and CEO of Recyclops.

Recyclops will also create jobs for local-area contractors through its sharing-economy business model. For every 100 households that utilize the service, one job will be created.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), has issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken.

• Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

• Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

• Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

• Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.

• If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

• Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken.

• Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

• Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

• Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

• Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

• Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact

• Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

If you observe a scum, a paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments, or the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken.• Signage will be posted at all public access locations.• Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.• Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.• Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.• Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact• Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.If you observe a scum, a paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments, or the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. KDHE issues health advisories for local pond, area lakes 

On May 17, 2021, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 7900 block of S. Whitmore Road in Saline County for a report of a theft. 

Sometime between May 8, 2021, and May 17, 2021, unknown suspect(s) entered the property and stole a black 22-foot PJ Carhauler trailer, a Skid Steer grapple bucket, an 18-inch auger and nine-inch auger for a Skid Steer, and a green 2006 Honda Rancher 350.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $10,000.

Downtown a happening place for First Friday fun

Speed was a factor in a single-vehicle accident that injured two Gypsum teens Thursday morning.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies and Salina EMS personnel were sent to the entrance to the Southeast of Saline campus at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday for the report of an injury accident.

A 2011 Chrysler 200 driven by a 17-year-old Gypsum girl had been westbound on Kansas Highway 4 when the girl attempted to turn into the Southeast of Saline campus entrance at too high a speed, Soldan said. The car struck the concrete base of a light pole.

The girl and her twin sister, who was a passenger in the car, suffered injuries and were transported by Salina EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. Soldan said he did not know the extent of the girls' injuries. 

The driver was cited for an improper turn.

SOLOMON - A man was killed earlier this morning in a motorcycle-truck accident west of Solomon on Old Highway 40.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies are still working the accident that occurred before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Old Highway 40 and N. Donmyer Road.

A man riding the motorcycle was killed, Soldan said.

No other details are available at this time.

Salina Public Library releases second scavenger hunt clue

HAYS – Fort Hays State University’s College of Health and Behavioral Sciences announced recent student inductees into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.

The Psi Chi Honor Society recognizes and promotes excellence in the science and application of psychology. Applicants must meet grade point average criteria as well as rank in the top 30 percent of psychology students to be considered for induction to the honor society.

Psi Chi rewards its members annually with various awards and grants programs. Additionally, members are eligible to apply for the Psi Chi scholarship program that was introduced in 2015. Inductees are bestowed lifetime memberships to the honor society.

Select FHSU psychology students, attending virtually and on-campus, displayed outstanding academic achievement in the program. Recognized for their dedication and determination, 23 students were officially inducted into Psi Chi in April.

“These students are smart, have worked hard, and maintained their GPA through COVID and other life situations,” said Dr. Carol Patrick, professor of psychology. “They are to be commended.”

FHSU, along with the Department of Psychology, recognizes the following students for their commitment to academic excellence and outstanding achievement.

Surveillance video is being reviewed after someone dumped a large amount of hand sanitizer on the walls and floors of Salina High School South.

A staff member at Salina South, 730 E. Magnolia Road, reported that someone had taken a large container of hand sanitizer and roamed the halls, dumping the sanitizer on the walls and floor, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The sanitizer ate through the finish on the floor. Total damage was estimated at $7,250.

The incident is believed to have occurred between 8:40-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Forrester noted.
