Food insecurity affects one in every five children in Saline County. That is why the Salina Emergency Aid/Food Bank, whose mission it is to provide emergency needs for food, shelter and well-being to Saline County residents, has announced a matching gift challenge intended to secure funds needed to expand operations to meet the rising needs of the community.

“We are so privileged to have specials donors pay tribute to our 50th anniversary by matching donations received before Dec. 31 up to $50,0000. We can’t think of a better way to encourage others to join us in providing families safe access to nutrition and resources," said Food Bank Executive Director Karen Couch. "In addition to funding a strategic expansion of our operations, this campaign gives us the endurance to keep fighting hunger and helping our most vulnerable citizens in the years to come.”

As the need for resources continues to grow due to the pandemic, many Kansans — including children, seniors and increasingly vulnerable populations — find themselves struggling to get back on track. The Food Bank distributed a record-setting amount of food and hygiene items over the last year through food programs and partner relationships. 

Looking to the future, Couch said, “Our food bank is more than just a short-term solution to a household in crisis. We are positioned to be a key step on the road to long-term stability, but it takes hard-working team of creative individuals, volunteers and donors to make it happen.”

My husband and I have a rental property in South Carolina we want to sell. The current renters’ lease is up in December, but our property manager tells us the renters won’t let anyone in the home, not even just for photos to post online due to COVID-19. How do you think we should handle this situation?&nbsp; &nbsp;

I don’t know much about current COVID-19 restrictions in South Carolina, but this sounds suspicious to me. I’m also thinking your property manager is kind of a wuss, but I have the spiritual gift of cynicism.

I’m old school, and if I&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/mortgage-payoff-calculator" target="_blank">own a house</a>, I’d like to go in it any time I want—within reason, of course—if renters are in there. They have the legal right of quiet enjoyment, meaning I don’t get to show up at all hours and harass them. But I’m not letting them stiff-arm me and use COVID-19 as an excuse. I mean, tenants thinking they have the right to give the landlord and owner zero access? Maybe places like the Socialist Republic of California allow this kind of crap, but most states have common sense, plus reasonable tenant&nbsp;and&nbsp;landlord protections. Yeah, the whole feel of this makes me think there’s something very wrong going on inside this house.

ELLSWORTH - Marking its "wild and wicked" past, Ellsworth will celebrate this weekend with Cowtown Days.

Open to the public, Ellsworth Cowtown Days is scheduled for Friday through Sunday.

"Ellsworth Cowtown Days is an annual event held every August that celebrates the town's history as a wild and wicked cowtown in the late 1800s. The weekend's events include a live reenactment of The Shooting of Sheriff Whitney, a parade, the El-Kan Western Rodeo, 5K race, live music, children's games and entertainment, ping pong ball drops, face painting, craft vendors, raffles, cow patty bingo, food vendors and a beer garden," the event noted on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ellsworthcowtowndays">Facebook page</a>.

The annual El-Kan Western Riders CRRA Rodeo is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the rodeo grounds. Mutton busting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the gate. ($5 for children under age 12.)

The 11th annual Ellsworth Cowtown Days 5K Run is scheduled for Saturday. Registration is scheduled for 6:30-7:30 a.m. at the corner of Douglas and Main Street. The race day entry fee is $20 per person.

Established in 1867, Ellsworth's history began as a cattletown with a reputation for a thriving cattle market. Ellsworth dominated the cattle market from 1871-1875, but along with the prosperity came a rich history of wild cowboys, gamblers, outlaws, and unruly women.

​Like other Kansas cowtowns, Ellsworth quickly gained a reputation as a wild and wooly place, becoming the scene of numerous killings following shootouts between drunken cowboys. In its early days, the area was besieged by a gang led by two men named Craig and Johnson. Making frequent robberies and bullying the townspeople, the citizens finally organized a vigilance committee and hanged the two near the Smoky Hill River.

​In 1873, Ellsworth geared up for the largest drives of Longhorns to date. Expecting trouble, they hired additional police officers to control the rowdy cowboys. They would be needed when a dispute arose on August 15, 1873, between Texas gambler, Ben Thompson and another player named John Sterling in Nick Lentz’s Saloon. When City Marshal, “Happy Jack” Morco sided with the other player against Texan Ben Thompson, a known gunfighter Ben and his drunken brother Billy moved out into the street and called out to their opponents to meet them.

​Instead of Morco, Ellsworth County Sheriff Chauncey Whitney stepped into the street with the Thompsons and soon convinced them to have a drink with him at Joe Brennan’s Saloon. However, before they could get there, Marshal Morco charged down the street, guns drawn. Thompson then wheeled and fired his rifle at Marco, narrowly missing him. Billy, on the other hand, stumbled and discharged his shotgun, mortally wounding Sheriff Whitney.

Glik's plans to open two locations in Salina's Central Mall

One of the classes basic training students take at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) is resilience. 

Resilience gives the students a tool they need to recover from difficulties associated with responding to stressful situations on the job. 

During the class, KLETC Class Coordinator James Buettgenbach has students visit KLETC’s Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor is a monument recognizing those KLETC graduates who have died in the line of duty. 

Each student reads aloud to the class the name of the fallen officer, the officer's agency, and how he or she died.

“Showing gratitude is a form of resilience that helps not only the person who receives the expression of gratitude, but it also helps the person who expressed gratitude," said Buettgenbach.

Students are told that those on the Wall of Honor may have left things unsaid to someone who is important to them. As an exercise, Buettgenbach has the students write a thank you letter to someone in their life who means something to them. The students then seal the letters and give them to Buttgenbach to be mailed at a later date.

KLETC basic training students learn the value of resilience

TOPEKA – United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Acting State Director for Rural Development Kansas Dan Fischer today announced that USDA is investing $5.19 million to build infrastructure to expand the availability of higher-blend renewable biofuels through three projects in Kansas. 

USDA is making the awards under the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program. The funding will help significantly increase the use of biofuels derived from U.S. agricultural products and prioritize climate-smart solutions that will help rural America.

“Investments like these increase energy options for Kansas consumers,” Fischer said. “By expanding the availability of higher-blend biofuels, we’re also expanding an important market for Kansas farmers.”

Today’s announcement includes investments in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas and Wisconsin.

●TA Operating LLC will replace 28 dispensers and two storage tanks at two fueling stations in Salina and in Gary, Ind. This project is a $190,000 USDA investment and is expected to increase the amount of ethanol sold by 1,104,682 gallons per year.

●Three G Energy Inc. will replace four dispensers at a fueling station in McPherson. This project is a $117,000 USDA investment and is expected to increase the amount of ethanol sold by 894,742 gallons per year.

●Magellan Pipeline Company LP will install a 25,000-barrel storage tank, piping, pumps, gauging, manways, tank insertion heater and insulation, and small biodiesel mechanical building at a location in Kansas City, Kan. It also will install a 10,000-barrel storage tank with piping, pumps, gauging, manways tank insertion heater and insulation, and small biodiesel mechanical building at a distribution facility in Brookline, Mo. This project is a $4,884,077 USDA investment and is expected to increase the amount of biodiesel sold by 223,661,458 gallons per year.

Today’s announcement marks the one-year anniversary of the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program. To date, USDA has invested $66.4 million for projects that are expected to increase biofuels sales by 1.2 billion gallons annually.

Through this program, USDA helps transportation fueling and biodiesel distribution facilities offer higher ethanol and biodiesel blends to customers by sharing the costs to install fuel pumps, equipment and infrastructure. USDA invests more than $5M in local, area biofuel infrastructure projects

DICKINSON COUNTY—Friends and family of an Abilene woman injured in a fatal Wednesday accident in Abilene have established a fundraiser to assist her as she heals. 

According to the <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/SadieSmithFund81821?utm_source=customer&amp;utm_medium=copy_link&amp;utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1">GoFundMe page</a>, 19-year-old Sadie (Haase) Smith's injuries included&nbsp; the loss of her left arm just below the elbow.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported&nbsp; that just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, a 2009 Nissan Altima driven by Kristen A.&nbsp; Teeters, 22, Abilene, was&nbsp;southbound on Brady Street in Abilene at a high rate of speed.

The driver failed to stop at the 14th Street intersection and&nbsp; lost control of the car. It then struck a curb, left the roadway at the 13th Street intersection, rolled and came rest on Hillside Street and partially on a private property.

&nbsp;Teeters was pronounced dead at the scene

EMS transported passengers identified as Smith,&nbsp; William V.&nbsp;Donahue, Jr., 21 and Mason J. Barnes, 20, both of Salina to Salina Regional Health Center. The driver and passengers in the Nissan were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Abilene woman lost arm in fatal rollover crash

A recreational vehicle was found burning east of Salina Wednesday afternoon and now the Saline County Sheriff's Office is trying to find out who owns it.

Deputies and personnel from Rural Fire District No. 5 were sent to the 3400 block of E. North Street at 4:11 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a vehicle fire, Saline Count Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. When they arrived, they found a 1983 Fleetwood Pace Arrow RV engulfed in flames.

A farmer driving by noticed the fire and attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher, Melander said. The man also checked to make sure no one was inside, he added.

Melander said the Kansas license plate on the RV expired in 2015 and was registered to someone in Phillipsburg, however, investigators have yet to find someone by that name in Phillipsburg.

Persons with information about this RV and fire are asked to call the sheriff's office at (785) 826-6500, Melander said.

Sheriff's office looking for owner of RV that burned east of Salina

A Salina man was arrested in Concordia after an alleged incident with a family member west of Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a 51-year-old female was driving a 2012 Ford Focus in the 4400 block of State Street when a passenger in the car, Joseph Tholstrup, 31, of Salina, began to argue with her. The incident occurred at approximately noon on Wednesday.

During the argument, Tholstrup began asking for family members addresses. He allegedly held a knife to the woman's throat and then kicked her out of the car, Melander said. A witness saw the incident and called 911, he added.

By the time deputies got to the scene, Tholstrup and the car were gone. Deputies were told that Tholstrup had said he was going to kill family members, Melander said. He was believed to be on his way to Concordia.

The Concordia Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the search for Tholstrup and located him in Concordia, Melander said. The car also was located there.

Tholstrup was brought back to Salina and booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Melander said.

●Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

Melander said the woman was not injured in the incident.

Salina man arrested after alleged incident with knife Wednesday

McPHERSON – Continuing the upward enrollment trend established over the past seven years, McPherson College welcomed the class of 2025 to campus on Tuesday for the start of fall semester classes. 

Freshmen and transfer students comprise the largest group of new students in school history at 350. As classes get underway, full-time degree-seeking enrollment is again over 800.

At 282 students, the class of 2025 is 35 percent larger than last year’s freshman class. The class comes to McPherson from 36 states and 12 countries. Twenty students decided to stay closer to home and took advantage of the college’s scholarship offered to students from neighboring communities. While freshmen are enrolled in all programs across campus, the top programs include business, auto restoration, behavior science, health science, and sports management. The health science program, introduced last year, pairs students with local health agencies for experiential education opportunities, and sports management is a restructured program starting this semester.

Due to the disruptions of last year, many students are looking forward to a more traditional college experience. McPherson College began the fall semester without social distancing restrictions in its classrooms but for the first two weeks is asking everyone to wear a mask while inside campus facilities. The college is among schools from across the country joining the White House COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge and agreeing to take action in encouraging students, faculty, and staff members to be vaccinated.

“While many question whether or not a small college should exist, we are proving that students and families value the kind of experience they find at McPherson College,” President Michael Schneider said. “One of the ways we do that is by addressing what students and families are most concerned about and that is college debt.”

For the past three years, McPherson College has offered students an opportunity to reduce their student loans by participating in the Student Debt Project. Beginning the fourth year of the program, nearly 40% of McPherson College students have applied to the program. During fall orientation, every student learned about their own financial wellness by filling out personal budget sheets that explain their costs, financial aid, and how participating in the Student Debt Project could help them reduce the gap owed before loans.

Along with matching funds and a pay-as-you-go option, the program also matches students with mentors to answer financial questions. This year, more than 40 alumni and friends of the college, spanning from Florida to California, serve as mentors to small groups of students in the program.

“It is important to help our students understand their financial obligations and see that there are options other than taking out loans to pay for college,” Christi Hopkins, vice president for admissions, said. “Many students are already planning to work at college, and this gives them an added incentive to pay as they go while reducing the amount they borrow.”
