In every generation, young people exercise their First Amendment freedoms in new ways to pursue a brighter future. As Gen Z grows, they are firming up their knowledge and understanding of the First Amendment in ways that are both similar and different from older Americans.

In our&nbsp;<a href="https://survey.freedomforum.org/" target="_blank">Where America Stands survey</a>, members of Gen Z shared what the First Amendment means to them and how they use it in their everyday lives.

Here are the top five things to know about Gen Z respondents and the First Amendment.

1. GEN Z THINKS THE FIRST AMENDMENT GETS IT RIGHT.

While it’s more than 230 years old, the First Amendment resonates most with young adults. More than any other age group, the youngest Americans don’t think the First Amendment goes too far in the rights it guarantees.

When it comes to naming the individual freedoms the First Amendment protects, Gen Z performed better than every other generation. While assembly and petition proved hard to recall across the board, they could name the freedoms of religion, speech and press without help at higher rates than the average American.

3. GEN Z IS WORRIED ABOUT SHARING THEIR OPINIONS.

Two-thirds of Gen Zers say they’ve kept their thoughts to themselves because they were worried about being punished for what they said. That’s well above the overall average. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2022/02/09/perspective-unpacking-cancel-culture-is-it-censorship-civil-right-or-something-else/" target="_blank">way society reacts to speech today</a>&nbsp;is having a chilling effect on the youngest generation.

4. GEN Z ISN’T SOLD ON THE PRESS BEING A WATCHDOG.

Between the loss of local media and the rise in social media, the press doesn’t have the same impact that it did decades ago. That is reflected in how the youngest generation sees the media’s role. While a declining majority of Americans still think the press plays an important role in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2021/03/10/you-cant-have-democracy-without-a-free-press/" target="_blank">keeping the government accountable</a>, almost two-thirds of young people disagree.

5. GEN Z ISN’T BIG ON REACHING OUT DIRECTLY TO ELECTED OFFICIALS.

Most Americans say they’ve never contacted a representative about changing a law or policy position. Gen Z is the least likely to have done so. That doesn’t mean they don’t&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2021/11/17/perspective-petition-is-the-freedom-that-gets-things-done/" target="_blank">appreciate the freedom of petition</a>, though. Almost half of Gen Z said they had signed a petition in the previous three months, far more than the 30 percent overall average.

ABILENE - Hospice of Dickinson County is looking for compassionate individuals who want to make a difference in our community, and join the dedicated team of volunteers. 

New hospice volunteer training for those interested in becoming a volunteer has been scheduled. Anyone in Dickinson County is welcome to attend. The class will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and March 25 at the Home Health and Hospice office, 1111 N. Brady in Abilene. The training is for individuals who would like to help support hospice patients and their families, and will include how the program works and how volunteers are an important part of the hospice program. There are many ways in which hospice volunteers can lend their time and unique talents. Whether helping support patients, caregivers, and families directly, or by assisting with administrative work, there is a special place for you on the hospice volunteer team. Volunteers do not provide any medical or hands-on care; they simply spend time with the patient and family. Hospice of Dickinson County offering volunteer training

TOPEKA—The 8th Judicial District Nominating Commission has selected Neal Gugler to fill a district magistrate judge vacancy in Dickinson County.&nbsp; The commission conducted a public interview for the position Friday in Junction City. Eight people had applied for the opening. Gugler’s new position will be effective on his swearing-in. He is a special investigator for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The 8th Judicial District is composed of Dickinson, Geary, Marion, and Morris counties.&nbsp;&nbsp; The vacancy was created when Judge Keith Collett was sworn in as a district judge Oct. 29. Eligibility requirements&nbsp; Kansas law requires that this district magistrate judge be:&nbsp;

●a resident of Dickinson County at the time of taking office and while holding office;

●a graduate of a high school, a secondary school, or the equivalent; and

 ●either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or able to pass an examination given by the Supreme Court to become certified within 18 months.&nbsp;

Term of office&nbsp; After serving one year in office, the new magistrate judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.&nbsp; Nominating commission&nbsp; The 8th Judicial District Nominating Commission consists of Justice Caleb Stegall as the nonvoting chair; Kevin Harris and Douglas Thompson, Abilene; Ashley Iverson, Council Grove; Darrell Miller, Dwight; Keith Henry, Junction City; Daryl Enos and Edwin Wheeler Jr., Marion; and Eric Coffman, Milford.

Red flag warnings have been issued for a large part of Kansas, include most counties in our area.

The fire weather watches that had been in effect for some counties have been canceled.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and includes the following counties in our area.

Southwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are forecast. Winds will shift to the west and northwest during the late afternoon and evening.

Additionally, relative humidity is forecast to be as low as 19 percent.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended, the weather service noted.

On March 5, 1770, the Boston Massacre took place as British soldiers who'd been taunted by a crowd of colonists opened fire, killing five people.

In 1849, Zachary Taylor was inaugurated as the 12th president of the United States. (The swearing-in was delayed by a day because March 4 fell on a Sunday.)

In 1868, the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson began in the U.S. Senate, with Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase presiding. In 1982, comedian John Belushi was found dead of a drug overdose in a rented bungalow in Hollywood; he was 33.

In 1998, NASA scientists said enough water was frozen in the loose soil of the moon to support a lunar base and perhaps, one day, a human colony.

In 2004, Martha Stewart was convicted in New York of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she'd unloaded her Imclone stock just before the price plummeted; her ex-stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, also was found guilty in the stock scandal. (Each later received a five-month prison sentence.)

In 2020, Palestinian officials closed the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem over fears of the coronavirus. Officials ordered a cruise ship with 3,500 people aboard to stay back from the California coast until passengers and crew could be tested; a traveler from its previous voyage died of the coronavirus.

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met at the White House, where Obama urged pressure and diplomacy to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb while Netanyahu emphasized his nation's right to a pre-emptive attack.

Five years ago: Throngs of people converged in the city of Selma, Alabama, for the annual re-enactment of a key event in the civil rights movement: the 1965 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge by demonstrators seeking voting rights.

One year ago: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's health department confirmed that members of his COVID-19 task force altered a state Health Department report to omit the full number of nursing home patients killed by the coronavirus, but insisted the changes were made because of concerns about the data's accuracy. California relaxed guidelines for reopening outdoor venues, clearing the way for fans to attend opening-day baseball games and return to Disneyland nearly a year after coronavirus restrictions shut down major entertainment spots. Movie theaters in New York City reopened, operating at only 25% capacity. Pope Francis began the first-ever papal visit to Iraq with an appeal for Iraqis to protect the country's diversity, and for the country's embattled and dwindling Christian community to persevere.

A Pestinger Distributing van that was stolen from the parking lot of the  Central Mall Thursday afternoon was located in Wichita early this morning with two Salina teens inside.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that an employee of Pestinger Distributing, 1825 Bailey Road, was at the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street, to do some work at The District. The employee told police that he left the keys to the 2016 GMC Savana on the floorboard. When he came back out, the van was gone.

At approximately 2:25 a.m. Friday, the Wichita Police Department notified the Salina Police Department that they had located the van with a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy from Salina inside, Forrester said.

Approximately $7,000 worth of items were stolen from a storage facility in southwest Salina earlier this week.

The theft occurred sometime between Monday and Thursday.

●A blue 2005 Yamaha Raptor 660 ATV, valued at $3,000

●A JL 500 watt mono block vintage car stereo amplifier from the 1990s, valued at $400

Minor earthquake shakes part of southern Saline County Friday

We’re trying to get control of our finances by living on a budget. We also have about $18,000 in debt we are trying to pay off. My husband brings home $3,400 a month, and I am currently taking care of our eight-month-old baby. We would like to have a date night once a month, and he thinks we should set aside $200 for this. Under the current circumstances, I feel like this is too much. What do you think?

If you’d told me you guys make $150,000 a year, I’d say go have a great time. But with your income, and a lot of debt on top, I’d put the brakes on that amount. It sounds like he’s looking for an outlet to unwind and have a little fun, without giving a lot of thought to the big picture. The good thing, though, is you’re&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/what-to-do-when-spouses-dont-agree-on-money" target="_blank">working&nbsp;together</a>&nbsp;and beginning to take this personal finance thing seriously.

My advice would be to lower the date night amount to about $50 right now. That’s plenty for a reasonable dinner and a babysitter for a couple of hours. You might not have to figure babysitting expenses into the equation at all if you have family or friends nearby.

Going out on a date doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money. Years ago, when my wife and I were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/money-myths-broke-people-believe" target="_blank">broke</a>, we did tons of stuff that didn’t cost a dime. Things like hiking and picnics are great ways to spend quality time together, while keeping your pocketbook in your pocket. Just be creative, talk about it&nbsp;together&nbsp;and make sure you find ways to have a little&nbsp;us&nbsp;time on a regular basis.

See all of the 2022 Oscar short film nominations over the weekend at the Art Center Cinema.

The Oscar Shorts Festival is scheduled for Friday through Monday at the Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Tickets are $10 per show, $6 for Art Center members, $8 for seniors, and free for Cinema Society members.

According to the cinema, a short film is typically considered to be a movie that is less than 30 minutes in length.

All three categories — Animated, Live Action, and Documentary — will be offered during the festival, the cinema noted in a news release.

Additionally, you can participate in the cinema's Oscar Predictions Contest. Visit the <a href="http://salinaartcenter.org/Oscar-shorts-festival">festival's website</a> to fill out an Oscar Predictions Contest Ballot. The contest winner will receive a Movies Worth Sharing package that includes two Art Center Cinema tickets, a small popcorn, and two small drinks, the cinema noted.

Oscar Shorts Festival at Art Center Cinema Friday-Monday

Starlet Parham, senior at Central High School (CHS), received a Rudd Scholarship valued at $80,000 to attend Fort Hays State University (FHSU).

“Starlet has always been a leader in my classroom by the example she sets with her hard work and integrity,” said Sheila Shaffer, science teacher at CHS. “Starlet has a wonderful work ethic and understands that learning involves many failures to find true success.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Starlet plans on studying psychology and pre-law at FHSU. She stays focused by keeping her eye on her end goal. “I tell myself that the big goal in the end can’t be completed without the little goals now,” explained Starlet. ”None of this would have been possible without my faith and trust that I endow in God. And for that, I am forever grateful and blessed.”

“Starlet is a tremendous asset to our Robotics team,” added Sheila Alstatt, CHS Robotics coach. “When she commits to a project, she stays at it until it is finished. I especially admire that she is a self-starter and can work independently on tasks.”

The Rudd Scholarship is a renewable, four-year program that covers any remaining cost of attendance after all other aid, grants and scholarships are applied to a student’s account. In January, fifty finalists were chosen from a large applicant pool of highly talented, accomplished Kansas high school seniors.

The final level of competition was an interview, after which Starlet was named one of 25 Rudd Scholarship winners across Kansas.

ABILENE - Dr. William Short has been elected to serve as Memorial Hospital’s chief of medical staff of the full medical staff for 2022-2023.

Short is a family medicine physician at Heartland Health Care Clinic. He also serves as the physician for Memorial Hospital Wound Center. The chief of medical staff serves as the president of Memorial Hospital’s medical staff. His duties include developing and implementing quality assurance activities, coordinating the activities of the medical staff, and communicating the opinions, policies, and needs of the medical staff to the board of directors, CEO, and other officials of the medical staff. Other elected officers for the medical staff are: Dr. Kimmy Hinman, vice president; Dr. Brian Holmes, secretary/treasurer; Dr. Megan Brown, past-president; and Dr. Christopher Young, specialty representative.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A colorful nod to nature is SculptureTour Salina's 2021 People's Choice Award.

Reven Marie Swanson's Butterfly Tree was announced this morning as the winner. The announcement was made where the sculpture currently resides, near the southwest corner of the Santa Fe Avenue/Iron Avenue intersection.

Butterfly Tree also was the winner of the Kids Choice Merit Award.

Based on public voting each year, the City of Salina  purchases for up to $15,000 the top vote getter, and it is placed somewhere in the public domain for everyone to enjoy. There is also a $1,000 Merit Award for the artist whose piece receives the second highest number of votes. The Kids Choice Merit Award of $500 goes to the creator of the piece receiving the most votes from children ages 12 and under. 

"At the heart of SculptureTour Salina lies the People’s Choice Award," said Salina City Commissioner Mike Hoppock, who chairs the SculptureTour Salina Committee. "The public has an opportunity to vote for their favorite and have their voice counted when a piece is chosen to stay in Salina."

Transformation by Jodie Bliss received the Merit Award for the second highest amount of votes.

The natural world has many observers and admirers from bird watchers, farmers and recreationalist. As a sculptor, Swanson seeks to put her observations of garden and back country adventures into a modern interpretation of steel and glass. It is her hope that her fellow observers interpret and covet the forms. It’s an act of stewardship to foster a greater appreciation to protect this beautiful resource.

Her work resides in numerous public and private collections, both nationally and internationally. Highlighted commissions are throughout the Rocky Mountain region, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Trust for Public Lands, and the Museum of Outdoor Arts. 

She installs many temporary outdoor installations leased by city municipalities. She works closely with city officials and installation crews to successfully and smoothly install more than a dozen works each year. For Swanson installing public art is like "leaving pieces of sunshine" wherever she goes.
