A Salina man was arrested Wednesday morning after he allegedly threw a landscape rock at a restaurant window.

Officers were dispatched at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to McDonald's, 701 S. Broadway, for the report of damage to property, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Employees told police that when a man couldn't get into the lobby because it was closed, he grabbed a landscape rock and threw it at an eight-foot by five-foot window, causing $2,000 damage, Forrester said.

Police located the man, identified as Tadd Marshall, 36, of Salina, at a nearby bus stop. He was arrested on the requested charge of felony damage to property, Forrester said.

A stop for a pizza proved costly for a Salina man Wednesday night.

Tanner Reed, 31, of Salina, stopped at Casey's, 215 W. Crawford Street, just after 11 p.m. Wednesday to pick up a pizza. He pulled up in front of the doors and left his red 2007 Ford Expedition running while he went inside to get the pizza, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Witnesses told police that while Reed was inside the store, they saw a Hispanic male run from the west side of the building, jump into the SUV, and take off north on S. Ninth Street at a high rate of speed, Forrester said. The man was described as being in his 20s and wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie with "Cookie" on it.

The SUV has a Kansas license plate of 217PXE and is valued at $6,000, Forrester said.

Virtual Salina Art Center Lunch and Learn set for Wednesday

Generosity, compassion, empathy, charity—these are the things that make us human. When we see someone hurting, reaching out to help comes almost as naturally as reaching for your smartphone when you realize there’s going to be a seven-minute wait at the dentist. But when it comes to large-scale, international crises, like what’s happening in Ukraine, many of us don’t have the tools or resources to volunteer or help directly—which, instead, presents us with the opportunity to give our support financially.

Enter: your not-so-friendly neighborhood scammer. With the sudden influx of resources and support being sent to Ukraine, savvy scammers are capitalizing on the loot. In fact, according to Tessian Cloud Email Security, the number of new domains registered containing the word “Ukraine” is up&nbsp;210%&nbsp;since last year—and&nbsp;77%&nbsp;of those appear to be malicious.<a href="https://www.tessian.com/blog/phishing-campaigns-pick-up-in-the-wake-of-the-ukraine-invasion/" target="_blank">1</a>

If you feel compelled in your heart to give, don’t let the fear of getting scammed stop you. Giving is one of the most important things you can do with your money. And it’s also the most fun you can have with money. It’s not only beneficial to those on the receiving end, but it’s also good for&nbsp;you.&nbsp;Giving helps your mental health, makes you and those around you happier, and&nbsp;according to Geisinger Health,&nbsp;reduces long-term stress (which in turn makes you live longer). Plus, if you’re a person of faith, giving is something you are called to do.

But if you use some simple street smarts, you can be confident that your money will get into the right hands and make the most impact as you support Ukraine. So, here are my top tips on how to avoid scams:

If you think you’ve struck gold on some suspicious activity, report it&nbsp;to the attorney general’s office in your state, then file a complaint with the FBI’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx" target="_blank">Internet Crime Complaint Center</a>&nbsp;(IC3). If you realize you’re a victim of a scam, contact your bank to freeze your account and see what they can do for you, and be sure to file a crime complaint report.

Even if you don’t have a lot to give right now, giving what you can will change you. I promise. You’ll start to find yourself feeling more grateful and content with your life.&nbsp;And don’t worry about the dollar amount. Small sacrifices will make a difference in your life, and more importantly, someone else’s. Now go forth and give—often and wisely!

Phone calls tend to be scams, but if for some reason it seems legit, call the organization back yourself (via the actual phone number on their website) before you even think about providing payment. If they’re encouraging you to pay with cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfers, I’d be willing to bet my air fryer it’s a scam—and that’s saying something (I mean, have you ever made brussels sprouts in those things?). Also watch out for QR codes. Often, scammers will use those to take you directly to payment apps like Cash App or Zelle. And finally, triple-check anything crowdfunded, like GoFundMe accounts, and make sure the organizer is who they say they are and that they’re funneling the money where they say it will go.</li><li>Be skeptical and do your research. I know, research sounds like a bad habit you gave up after college, but even just a quick Google search will probably tell you everything you need to know about an alleged charity. A good rule of thumb is that if it feels sketchy, it probably is. Look for clues, like misspellings. And if you feel any pressure, urgency or guilt, consider those red flags that further investigation is a must. The red flags you had about your ex may not apply here, but use those same gut feelings to make wise decisions.</li>

The lineup is set for the traditional kickoff for the Smoky Hill River Festival: the SM Hanson Festival Jam!

The SM Hanson Festival Jam is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. June 9 on the Eric Stein Stage in Oakdale Park.

During the four-hour Festival Jam, 16 bands will each play for 12 minutes. Several of the bands are new to the Festival Jam, while others are longtime fan favorites.

An estimated 13,000 people attended the 2019 Festival Jam, according to Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, Inc. 

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Smoky Hill River Festival was canceled. Last year, the Festival Jam got started, but eventually was rained out.

Following is the 2022 SM Hanson Festival Jam lineup, with information about the bands provided by Hanson.

6 p.m. Keep the Change This is a Steve Hanson project band – high school students of Steve Hanson and Dean Kranzler, this five-piece band will play southern rock to start our show. This will be the band's first time at the Festival Jam.

6:15 p.m. FedUp This four-piece band from Salina will be playing rock. This band played the Festival Jam in 2015 and now has some new faces.

6:30 p.m. Kyndred This five-piece band from the Hays, America, area will light it up with hard rock. A few of the members have played the Festival Jam previously, however, this is Kyndred's first time.

6:45 p.m. The Radicles Expect eclectic rock from this Salina four-piece band.

7 p.m. Don Wagner &amp; Friends Don and friends have played the Festival Jam previously and always are entertaining with a mix of country, rock, blues, and folk music.

7:15 p.m. The Opinions This will be the first time at the Festival Jam for this four-piece band with Salina roots. The band will be playing classic rock and original music.

7:30 p.m. The Get Downs They were HOT last year at their first Festival Jam. This five-piece band from Salina will play rock and blues.

7:45 p.m. Lix A band from the past – older now and yet...This original Salina three-piece band will play classic rock from the '50s to the '90s (they are that old).

8 p.m. Split Decision A Salina five-piece band that has played the Festival Jam previously, but it has been a few years. Southern rock and country is their wheelhouse.

8:15 p.m. Hey Radio A Wichita-based band. These guys lit it up in 2019. They were rained out last year. We look forward to the mix of skate punk and pop.

8:30 p.m. Dune Buggy These guys have played before. This Pet Project consists of five members playing together for several years. Their quick set will include rock and pop.

8:45 p.m. Fast Food Junkies Be ready to be blown away! This will be the fastest 12 minutes of music that night. They are from the McPherson area – playing HOT Bluegrass – Guitar, Banjo, and Bass. Originals and covers. First time at the Festival Jam.

9 p.m. Paramount 1980s rock from a Salina-based five-piece band that has been at the Festival Jam before. Always entertaining!

9:15 p.m. Northcutt They were rained out last year. A five-piece Salina band playing country/rock/blues.

9:30 p.m. Steve Hanson Band The founder! This is their 36th time at the Festival Jam. Always a variety – always great!

9:45 p.m. The Blades The Festival Jam closer. This band has SO MANY great players – it is really hard to count the people on stage! We know they will close the show properly.

Brandon Schlautman with The Land Institute, Salina, was selected to receive a $39,691 grant from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) for the project, "Using Perennial Groundcovers for Improved Soil and Nutrient Retention in Corn/Soy Production."

"This project will determine whether planting corn-soy rotations into Kentucky Bluegrass or Kura Clover perennial groundcovers, also known as perennial cover crops, is an economically viable strategy to limit soil and nutrient loss through on-farm demonstration trials," said Schlautman.

This grant was awarded as part of NCR-SARE's Partnership Grant Program. The Partnership Grant Program is intended to foster cooperation between agriculture professionals and small groups of farmers and ranchers to catalyze on-farm research, demonstration, and education activities related to sustainable agriculture. These days, working from home is pretty common. It’s a win-win for both those hoping to avoid a commute, and companies looking for talent from all over the world. You might even get a call or message about a job opportunity — but how do you know it’s legit? If a company asks for sensitive info (like your Social Security number) before they hire you — or they say they need you to make an upfront payment — it’s a scam.

Scammers have been reaching out to people,&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/features/imposter-scams">pretending to be companies</a>&nbsp;that offer at-home employment. These scammers are supposedly hiring for positions in data processing, among other fields. But after interested applicants finish long interviews, the interviewer says to give their Social Security number and other personal info. Then, the “company” sends them a check to “buy equipment.” But that check is for more than the amount needed, so they tell you to send the leftover money back to the company — or to someone else.&nbsp;That’s a scam.

Scammers promise you a job, but what they want is your money and personal information. So, before you accept a job offer:

●Do a search online.&nbsp;Look up the company’s name, email address, and phone number, plus the words “scam,” “review,” or complaint.”

●Start with sources you’re sure are legit.&nbsp;Try visiting sites like&nbsp;your state’s Career OneStop.

●Never bank on a “cleared” check.&nbsp;No legit employer will send you a check, tell you to buy stuff with it, and then ask you to send money to cover the balance. The check will bounce, and you’ll have lost the money you sent them.

FTC: Want to work from home? Spot the scams first

ABILENE - GoAbilene, a program of OCCK Transportation, is offering a brand new program for Abilene area youth ages 7-18.&nbsp;

Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a “Go Anywhere” Summer Youth Pass for $25.&nbsp; The pass will be good for unlimited rides on GoAbilene public transportation from June 1 to Aug. 31.&nbsp;

The passes will be available to purchase starting Monday.

Beginning in the fall of 2022, families will need to fill out a Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application to determine if they are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

The Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application is a part of the enrollment process. The application will be available when online enrollment opens July 13.

USD 305: Applications needed for free or reduced-price meals next year

A teen connected to two vehicle thefts and the double burglary at an east-Salina convenience store was booked into the Saline County Jail late Tuesday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that the store manager at Kwik Shop, 657 Fairdale Road, told police that he thought he recognized a former employee on surveillance video from the times the store was burglarized early Tuesday morning.

Surveillance video showed a white pickup pull up to the doors at approximately 12:40 a.m. Tuesday. A chain was hooked to the pickup and the store door and the doors were pulled open. Three males were seen on the video entering the store. They left and then returned a few minutes later.

Hanus said that during the two entries to the store, an undetermined amount of cash and more than $100 worth of tobacco were stolen.

Video from the return visit showed that the pickup had "APAC" on it. Officers went to APAC Kansas Shears Division, 1633 Sunflower Road, where they found the gate to the fenced in area had been forced open. An APAC employee arrived and told officers that a white 2007 Dodge Ram 2500, valued at $25,000, was missing.

At approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, an officer in the 100 block of S. Eighth Street located the pickup in a city parking lot, Hanus said. Additionally, a short time later, the officer located the named suspect in the case, who was identified as Isaiah T. Robertson, 18, of Salina. Hanus said Robertson had in his possession the keys to the pickup.

Hanus said Robertson confirmed his participation in the two burglaries at the Kwik Shop and the removal of the pickup from APAC. Additionally, he confirmed his participation in the theft of a Dodge Ram 2500, valued at $27,000, from APAC on April 30, Hanus said. That pickup was recovered the next morning.

Robertson faces a number of requested charges including multiple counts of felony theft, multiple counts of damage to property, and multiple counts of contributing to the misconduct of a juvenile.

Hanus said the other two people involved in the incidents were juveniles.

Salina teen arrested in connection to Kwik Shop burglaries

A local man was arrested and a Texas man was taken to the hospital after a traffic stop west of Salina Monday night.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that a deputy pulled a car over for speeding at approximately 9:45 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of S. Burma Road. While the deputy was talking with the driver and a passenger, he discovered a 46-year-old man from Texas lying in the back seat.

The driver, identified as Thomas Fletcher, 22, of Salina, told the deputy he was taking the man to the hospital because he had fallen off the structure at Coronado Heights in far southern Saline County. Hughes said EMS was called and they transported the man to Salina Regional Health Center with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no indications of foul play, he added.

Fletcher was arrested on the following requested charges, Hughes said.

●Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Another passenger in the vehicle, Shade McLean, 22, of Salina, was cited for having an open container, Hughes said.

Traffic stop results in arrest of Salina man, transport to SRHC for Texas man

The Salina Police Department announced Wednesday morning that Dalton Levi Palmer has been taken into custody.

On Saturday, police identified Palmer as a person of interest in a shooting incident early Saturday morning in the 400 block of S. College Avenue that left one person dead and two others injured.

"Dalton Levi Palmer, the person of interest in this shooting investigation, is in custody regarding his unrelated warrants," the Salina Police Department noted in a statement issued this morning.

On Tuesday, the Saline County Sheriff's Office had posted the following on its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalineSheriffKS">Facebook page</a>.

"The Saline County Sheriff's Office is asking for assistance in locating Dalton Levi Palmer. Palmer is currently listed on the 24 Most Wanted for May of 2022 in Saline County, Kansas. Palmer has a Saline County District Court felony fail to appear warrant with charges of: Distribution of Meth, Possession of Meth, Possession of Drug Para, Criminal Use of Weapons, Interfere w/LEO, Child Endangerment and multiple traffic charges. Palmer was last known to be in Salina, Kansas but is known to have ties to the Delphos, Kansas area."

In regard to the shooting incident, officers were sent to the 400 block of S. College Avenue at approximately 3:20 a.m. Saturday for a report of several gunshots being fired in the area. When they arrived, they located multiple spent ammunition casings in the street. A few minutes later, at 3:23 a.m., they were called to the emergency room of Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue, for the report of two gunshot victims there.

One of the shooting victims, identified as Dylan Eugene Garman, 25, of Salina, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victim is an 18-year-old female whose identity has not been released.

At approximately 3:34 a.m., officers were sent to the 500 block of E. Cloud Street for the report of a person lying in the front yard of a residence who had been shot multiple times. A 23-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, where he underwent emergency surgery before being transferred to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries, police noted at the time.

An unmanned aircraft systems integration and design student at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;will be spending his summer learning and working at one of the biggest technology manufacturers in the world. Thanks to a career fair at the K-State Salina campus in the fall, Houston Griffitts, junior,&nbsp;Salina, used his networking skills and built a professional relationship with a representative from California-based General Atomics. That relationship has blossomed into an internship opportunity for Griffitts this summer with the company. General Atomics is a defense and diversified technologies company that produces unmanned aircraft and provides drone technology such as electro-optical, radar, signals intelligence and automated airborne surveillance and power conversion systems, among other things. The business occupies over 8 million square feet of engineering, laboratory and manufacturing facilities with more than 15,000 employees. General Atomics is also one of K-State Salina's biggest industry partners. "I met the representative from General Atomics and showed him engineering drawings that I have been working on since I was in high school," Griffitts said. "General Atomics is widely regarded as one of the premier drone technology companies and it's a company I have always wanted to work for. I think this experience will not only provide me with hands-on experience in things that I can't learn anywhere else, but also may help me get a job in this industry in the future." The internship will be from June 6 to Aug. 12 and Griffitts will work at General Atomics' headquarters near San Diego. As a machinal engineering intern, he will use the engineering and computer engineering skills he has learned at K-State Salina. K-State Salina annually hosts two career fairs where businesses from different industries come to campus to talk with students. Many students use the experience to build networking skills or even earn an internship or job opportunity. "Career fairs provide students valuable experiences in learning how to network with industry professionals, as well as potentially tightening their interviewing skills," said Josh Doak, with K-State Salina Career Services and Personal Development. Wait, don’t stop reading because what I have to say is especially important and will affect your farm and ranch for a long time to come. I know we are all tired of the constant fighting and mudslinging and what happens in D.C. and Topeka seems to be millions of miles away. I am here to tell you what happens in both cities hits close to home. Over and over, I hear about how good people have turned off politics and just do not participate anymore. Friends, we have to change that. I am begging, no I am pleading, with all of you to get involved in this next election cycle and help make Kansas Farm Bureau’s voice stronger. Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF) has a great record when it comes to endorsing candidates, but this is no time to get complacent. We must make our voice heard. VOTE FBF’s track record when it comes to endorsing candidates is so strong because we involve, or try to involve, every county and every member in the process. I know I sound like a broken record, but our strength is our grassroots. This is the time of the year when VOTE FBF starts to make decisions on which candidates to endorse in both our federal and state elections. The very core of the process is the recommendations from each county. It is important, especially in state races, because you know your candidates, your voice and opinions carry great weight with the VOTE FBF board. It’s true, you need to have at least donated $5to VOTE FBF, but that is a small price to have a say in who makes the rules and laws that affect our livelihoods. We need to make sure we are surfacing and supporting legislators who understand and back agriculture. The only way things will get better is if we are involved, and that has to start now. First, familiarize yourself with the candidates in your area. Read their websites and go meet them. Find out who supports your way of life and who will represent your point of view in D.C. and Topeka. Then go to your county office, pay your $5 if you haven’t already and ask to be part of the process. I will bet you won’t be turned down. I hope there will be deep, meaningful conversations about which candidates to back around those board tables. Most of all, however, I hope we have feedback from all 105 counties. I can’t emphasize how important the next two election cycles are to agriculture and rural Kansas. We must make sure we have a say in which candidates represent us. &nbsp;Get informed and get involved because we need your input to ensure we endorse pragmatic leaders who understand agriculture and rural Kansas. Five years ago: President Donald Trump signed an executive order launching a commission to review alleged voter fraud and voter suppression, building upon his unsubstantiated claims that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election. (Trump disbanded the commission in January 2018 amid infighting and refusals by numerous states to cooperate.)

Today in History - May 11

On April 24, the Smoky View 4-H Club chose fair king and queen candidates Karson Pihl and Brynna Anderson for the Tri-Rivers Fair. This took place during the club’s April club meeting at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.

At this meeting, Krew Swisher gave a demonstration on how to make chocolate chip cookies with his mom. Marik Anderson presented a video to the club about his meat goat project. Brynna Anderson gave a presentation on the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers, which is a group of high school students that promote Swedish dancing and its history. Lastly, Ridge Johnson showed the club two fully functioning model engines that he constructed.

On April 23, several members of the Smoky View 4-H Club held a club fundraiser for the year. A concession stand at the Central Kansas Beef Classic Show was held to raise funds for the club. 

The club will meet again on June 19 at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.
