SOLOMON - The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the burglary of a shed south of Solomon.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that sometime between May 25 and Thursday, someone broke into a shed in the 1100 block of N. Solomon Road and stole the following items.

Sink, stove stolen from shed south of Solomon

Three men who escaped from a jail in Cassville, Mo., early Friday are believed to be responsible for the theft of an SUV in Salina that was later found in far western Kansas.

Raelynn Sickman, 29, of Salina, reported her maroon 2005 GMC Yukon stolen from in front of her residence in the 100 block of S. Connecticut Avenue at approximately 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Sickman told police that she had last seen the SUV at approximately 7:45 p.m. Saturday and that it had been unlocked with the keys inside, he said.

A neighbor told police of seeing a woman wearing a tan shirt and jeans shorts and carrying a drawstring bag and a man with brown hair who was wearing sunglasses, a t-shirt, and gray shorts in the area at the time of the theft.

An officer investigating the theft went around the corner to Casey's at E. Iron Avenue and S. Ohio Street to check surveillance video but was told to come back on Sunday. When the officer was able to review the video on Sunday, she saw a man and a woman who fit the neighbor's description near the vacuums at Casey's. Forrester said they were around a white 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup that Salina police learned was stolen from Barry County in southwest Missouri. 

They also learned from the Barry County Sheriff's Office that three people early Friday morning had escaped from the county jail in Cassville, Mo., and were believed to be connected to the theft of the pickup found in Salina.

The Barry County Sheriff's Office, in a news release posted on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064845214128">Facebook page</a> Friday morning, reported that early that morning three inmates, identified as Lance Justin Stephens, Matthew Allen Crawford, and Christopher Allen Blevins, escaped from the Barry County Jail. According to the news release, the trio should be considered armed and dangerous.

In an update Monday morning on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064845214128">Facebook page</a>, the Barry County Sheriff's Office reported that the case had been turned over to the United States Marshals Service to find the escapees.

While Salina police were working the local theft case, they were notified by the Wallace County Sheriff's Office in Sharon Springs that Sickman's Yukon had been found there, Forrester said. It is believed that whoever took the Yukon then stole another vehicle in Sharon Springs, he said.

SUV stolen in Salina believed connected to Mo. jail escapees

FALUN - Two Saline County residents added supporting evidence to the concept that it isn't safe to attempt to drive through water over roadways, and they did so at the same location.

Deputies were first sent to Falun Road about a half mile east of S. Burma Road at approximately 11:30 a.m. Saturday for the report of a vehicle in a water-filled ditch. Breanna Call, 30, of Falun, was westbound on Falun Road in a 1980 Mercedes when the car either hydroplaned or was washed into the ditch, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

Then, at approximately 3:50 p.m. Saturday, deputies were sent to the same location for the report of a 2013 Buick Verano driven by Karlee York, 31, of Salina, that had hydroplaned into the ditch, Soldan said.

Soldan said water tends to spill over that stretch of Falun Road when it rains.

Water over Falun Road puts two vehicles in rain-filled ditch

A couple more rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the region tonight through early Tuesday, and again Tuesday night through early Wednesday. 

A few strong to marginally severe storms are possible, along with pockets of heavy rain, which could aggravate ongoing flooding concerns.

While on a lecture tour of Chinese normal universities in spring of 2008, I found myself in charge of a class of 60 biology student teachers while the regular university professors had to attend a campus event of “one heart” with the victims of the Wenchuan earthquake that had occurred a few weeks earlier. After describing our U.S. educational system, I posed a question to the students: “Will the future general citizens of China need to know: 1) less, 2) the same amount, or 3) more science than they know today?”

The whole class responded immediately with one voice: “More science!”

The response from U.S. decision-makers has been “less science” for nearly 40 years. As a result, the graduate-level science programs at a majority of U.S. universities must rely on foreign students. Without them, many U.S. university science programs would have to close. The U.S. simply teaches far too little science K–12 for general citizen science literacy, let alone to inspire and produce science graduates.

Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology recently released its report documenting how China universities surpassed the U.S. in graduating science doctoral students back in 2007. In 2019, the U.S. graduated 33,759 STEM PhD students while China graduated 49,498. By 2025, we will produce 39,959 graduates while China will produce 77,179. But about 42 percent of those U.S. university science doctoral recipients are international students educated K–12 in foreign countries. If we only consider the American-born students trained in the U.S., then China will produce more than three times as many science doctorates as the U.S. in 2025 (23,256 compared to China’s 77,179).

The just-released report by our National Science Foundation, “The State of U.S. Science and Engineering 2022” confirms China surpassed the U.S. in total annual science papers published (in 2017) and patents awarded (in 2019). The U.S. fell behind China in contribution to global research spending growth over the past two decades: China (29%), United States (23%).

In October 2021, the Center for Strategic and International Studies released “Winning the Tech Talent Competition: Without STEM Immigration Reforms, the United States Will Not Stay ahead of China.” And our National Science Board just released “International STEM Talent is Crucial for a Robust U.S. Economy” with graphs titled “International Students Disproportionately Earn Doctoral Degrees in Fields Underlying Critical and Emerging Technologies” and “Substantial and Growing Proportion of the U.S. S&amp;E Workforce is Foreign-Born” and how “Over Half of Doctorate Holders Employed in Academic Engineering and Computer and Information Sciences are Foreign-Born.”

The National Science Board has released “The State of U.S. Science and Engineering 2022" report asserting “Building the STEM labor force through strengthening U.S. STEM education at the K–12 level will increase S&amp;E capacity.” But this accurate statement provided no further actions towards increasing our K–12 science coursework or increasing science teacher training. &nbsp;

There are four problems. 1) U.S. national and state legislatures have made clear decisions to abandon nuclear science, particle accelerators, astronomy facilities, etc., thus moving this research overseas. 2) Education Schools refuse to expand science, assuming if you need a science snswer, you can just “look it up.” 3) Recent political actions have begun a decline in foreign students coming to the U.S. well before the pandemic, due to ongoing U.S. gun violence, anti-foreign nationalism and our anti-Asian and anti-Muslim violence. And 4) both legislators and education boards totally disregard our desperate need to increase K-12 science coursework and science teacher training.

Last December I sent three major reports on this U.S. decline in science education to over 500 members of state boards of education nationwide, and to the education czars in the four states that lack a state board. The facts were clear in those reports, documenting the long term decline in K–12 science coursework, the widespread shortage of well-trained science teachers, and state policies that are further eroding the quality and amount of science our future population will understand. It took us four decades to fall to the bottom of developed nations in science illiteracy. If we took immediate steps to turn this around, it would take another four decades to rebuild U.S. science productivity and literacy.

But the responses I received nationwide made it clear that there will be no turnaround. Only in America do we believe in a future of “less science.”

On June 6, 1944, during World War II, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, on "D-Day" as they began the liberation of German-occupied Western Europe.

In 1844, the Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London.

Flood warning in effect Monday for Ellsworth, Lincoln counties

This year's Juneteenth weekend will have special meaning in Salina.

On June 18, the Dana Adams Project 1893 Coalition will host a repast in memory of the young Black man who was lynched in Salina in 1893.&nbsp;No one was ever arrested for the lynching.

The celebration, dedication, and installation of a historical marker for Adams is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. June 18 in Caldwell Plaza. The plaza is located between the City-County Building and the Salina Public Library. The event is open to the public.

"The upcoming celebration will conclude a two-year journey the coalition began in June 2020 to tell Dana Adams story on a broader scale and recognize the 128-year-old lynching that happened in Salina, Kansas, on April 20, 1893. Dana a 20-year-old Black man was unceremoniously pulled from a Union Pacific rail car which was purposely uncoupled from the main train pulling out of the station and lynched on the property, by being hung by the neck on a telegraph pole at the train station on Ninth and North Street," the Rev. Delores 'Dee' J. Williamston told Salina Post.

Williamston, of Topeka, is a member of the Coalition for The Dana Adams Project 1893 along with Salinans Sandy Beverly and the Rev. Dr. Martha Murchinson.

The June 18 event is a collaboration between the coalition and the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI)/Legacy Museum in Montgomery Alabama. The event will include the dedication of a historic marker in remembrance of Adams. The historic marker summarizes the story of racial terror in Kansas on one side and provides Dana Adams' story on the other side. The six-foot-tall historic marker is being provided by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Community Remembrance Project.

In the great tradition of African American culture, we invite you to the grounds of Caldwell Plaza to break bread and honor the life of Dana Adams. Join us for the "Mercy Luncheon" that should have been part of the natural course of grieving, but was denied. When Dana Adams was lynched his family, friends and all Black African American citizens of Salina were afraid to go to work for days following the violent act on April 20, 1893.

The Dana Adams Project 1893 Coalition will host the long-overdue repast for this young man on June 18, 2022, the weekend of the federal holiday, Juneteenth. The event will conclude with the dedication of the historical marker provided by the Equal Justice Initiative. All events take place at Caldwell Plaza and the schedule of events is as follows:

Dana Adams remembrance, marker dedication on Juneteenth Weekend

Let’s go to Atlanta, to the largest blade and knife show in the world. Among the exhibitors is a craftsman from halfway across the continent. He is displaying his high-quality knives that are handmade in rural Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvey King is the craftsman who started his own business, known as Harvey King Knives. Harvey is a native of Topeka. After college, he met and married Bonnie who was from Eskridge. They moved to Eskridge and lived there for 34 years. In 2004, he and Bonnie noticed a place that they admired in the country near Alta Vista, and eventually moved to where they live today.&nbsp;

“I have been interested in knives most of my life,” King said. “My dad was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish, and he taught me the value of a good knife at a young age.”&nbsp;

“I spent 31 years building earthmover tires at Goodyear in Topeka,” said King, who is now retired. “The maintenance men at Goodyear knew I liked to hunt and fish and trap. They showed me some of the knives that they made in their spare time and, pretty quick, I wanted to try it.”&nbsp;

He started making knives in 1988 and soon found other people wanted them. A taxidermist friend talked him into sharing a table at some of the local shows and Harvey’s knives sold well. He launched his own business, Harvey King Knives, and started selling them at knife and gun shows around the country. In July 2022, King will turn 75.&nbsp;

“My daughter asked when I would retire,” King said. “I told her, when it ceases to be fun or when I’m too shaky to do it right. (Right now), it’s still fun.”&nbsp;

Hunters have an old saying: The gun does the work for 30 seconds, but the knife does the work for 2-3 hours. In other words, a hunting knife is used extensively, so it is important to have a good one.&nbsp;

What are the keys to making a good knife? ”Fit and finish,” King said. “The parts need to fit together just right, with no gaps, voids or holes, and the finish grind lines need to be straight.”&nbsp;

It is also important to start with the right materials, he said.&nbsp;

“A good knife starts with a properly heat-treated quality steel blade,” King said. He makes his blades out of D2 tool steel in 1/8” or 5/32” thickness. “It holds a good edge.”&nbsp;

What about the knife handle? “I like natural handles,” he said. King constructs his handles out of California buckeye, Amboyna Burl (a wood from southeast Asia), boxelder and hedge. The wood is injected with polyurethane carbonate to stabilize it. “It polishes out great,” King said.&nbsp;

He also handcrafts a leather sheath that goes with each knife.&nbsp;&nbsp;King creates various models of knives for small game, hunting, personal, companion use and more.&nbsp;

King has a supply of knives for sale and also makes custom knives on demand. In a year, he might produce as many as 175 knives. He is a member of the Professional Knifemakers Association, the American Bladesmith Society, and a past voting member of the Knifemakers Guild.&nbsp;

“I go to gun and knife shows,” he said, at one point attending 26 a year. He used to go to the Blade Show in Atlanta, which is the largest knife show in the world, but he prefers the shows in Denver and in Ohio, which are more personal. His knives have gone from coast to coast, from California to New York.&nbsp;

It's an impressive record for a craftsman located near the rural community of Alta Vista, population 409 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

NOW THAT'S RURAL: Harvey King Knives

Salina CityGo and paratransit services will be offering free rides and extended hours to patrons of the Smoky Hill River Festival.

Any passengers with a river festival wristband, that ride CityGo or paratransit vehicles, will be allowed to ride for free on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

CityGo passengers must show the drivers their wristbands when they board the buses.&nbsp; Paratransit riders must tell the dispatcher they have river festival wristbands when they schedule their rides.&nbsp;

Additional hours have been added to CityGo’s schedule to accommodate River Festival hours as well.&nbsp; The Blue Route will run until 10 p.m. on Thursday,&nbsp; Friday, and Saturday.

From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, the Blue Route will pick up passengers at the normal stops at the Oakdale Park north entrance, the Oakdale Park east entrance, the Kenwood Park footbridge, and Kenwood Cove.&nbsp; The driver will then take passengers to stops that they request on any route.&nbsp;

“We are pleased to offer this service to river festival patrons,” said Trell Grinter, transportation director for OCCK. “The festival is such a fun time for Salina and we want to make sure people are able to get to the park and stay as long as they want.&nbsp; And by offering free rides, we hope to encourage people to park a little bit further away and ride the bus in to help with the traffic congestion.”

UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watches have expired

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flash flood warning in effect until 1 a.m. Monday for the following part of our area.

At 8:02 p.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Ellsworth, Wilson, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Beverly, Ellsworth Airport, and Westfall. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Ellsworth, Wilson, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Beverly, Ellsworth Airport, and Westfall. UPDATE 1:30 p.m. Sunday: The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flood watch in effect for Dickinson County from 7 p.m. Sunday through Monday morning.

Recent heavy rainfall has resulted in swollen creek and streams along with saturated soils. Additional heavy rainfall is anticipated this evening and tonight which will likely yield more river flooding and possibly flash flooding.

A flood watch has been issued for multiple counties in our area.

Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two

feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

This will increase the risk of river, areal and even flash flooding. The flash flooding threat will be the most likely in areas which received significant rainfall last night.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

UPDATE noon Sunday: The flood warnings for all of Lincoln, Marion, McPherson, and Saline counties have been allowed to expire, however, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued flood warnings for the following two area rivers.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning for the Smoky Hill River at Lindsborg from Monday morning to early Tuesday morning. Minor flooding is forecast.

IMPACTS: At 21.0 feet, the south bank overflows extend out to 20 feet from bank. Old Mill Park floods along with low-lying fields in rural areas.

FORECAST: The river is expected to rise above flood stage Monday morning to a crest of 21.7 feet early Monday afternoon. It will then fall below flood stage Monday afternoon.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning in effect from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon for the Cottonwood River near Florence.

IMPACTS: At 24.0 feet, outside the levee system in southeast Florence, flood waters flow across Park Ave Road and reach the foundation of a residential home. Northwest of Florence, the bridge on 140th Road and 1/2 mile west of Highway 77 floods.

FORECAST: The river is expected to rise above flood stage this afternoon to a crest of 25.1 feet tomorrow morning. It will then fall below flood stage early Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flood warning from Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon for the Smoky Hill River at Enterprise.

IMPACTS: At 21.0 feet, Low land agricultural flooding occurs from near Enterprise to near Junction City. At 26.0 feet, Valley north of the Kansas Highway 43 bridge on the north side of Enterprise floods. At 27.0 feet, Railroad tracks near Enterprise flood.

FORECAST: The river will rise above flood stage early tomorrow afternoon to 28.1 feet tomorrow evening. It will then fall below flood stage early Tuesday morning to 23.1 feet and begin rising again Tuesday evening. It will rise to 23.2 feet early Wednesday morning. It will then fall again and remain below flood stage.

After storms rolled through, bringing heavy overnight rains to parts of the area, the National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning in effect until 10 a.m. for Lincoln County.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues. Flooding of various creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas is likely occurring. Some street flooding is likely as well. Various low-water crossings are likely inundated with water and may not be passable.

At 4:48 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated between 2 and 4 inches   of rain have fallen across the warned area since late Saturday evening.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning in effect until 9:45 a.m. for the following counties in our area.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues. Significant rises on streams and creeks has occurred due to heavy rainfall since Saturday morning. Various low-water crossings are likely inundated with water and may not be passable. Flooding of other low-lying and flood prone areas is likely.

At 4:37 a.m. CDT, local law enforcement reported up to 3 feet of   water was covering Highway 4 just south of Gypsum in southeast Saline county. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen since Saturday morning.

Overnight rainfall varied greatly across the area, from 0.02 of an inch 5 miles north-northwest of Cuba in Republic County to 3.75 inches 5.6 miles south of Gypsum in Saline County.

At the Salina Regional Airport, 0.92 of an inch was reported. In southeast Salina, near the Eagle Radio studios, 0.60 of an inch was reported.

More rain is forecast for Sunday afternoon and night.
