MANHATTAN – The recent increase in prices for many of Americans’ everyday expenses may motivate a return to simpler living, said&nbsp;Kansas State University family resource management specialist Elizabeth Kiss.&nbsp;

“We need to think about all of our (current) expenses,” Kiss said, “and decide whether this is a good opportunity to get back to basics and identify our foundation. What is it that we absolutely have to spend our money on right now?”&nbsp;

Kiss said all of us have fixed monthly costs, such as housing; and variable costs, such as food and fuel.&nbsp;

“The variable costs are the ones in the short run that we can modify,” she said. “You can decrease your expenses, or you can increase your income – or a combination of both.”&nbsp;

For those who choose to increase their income to make ends meet, Kiss said there are jobs available in the current labor market, “so if it’s to the point where you are thinking of taking on a part-time job – even for a short time – you have the opportunity to do that. But you still need to be working toward longer-term goals.”&nbsp;

Kiss shared some ideas for decreasing costs:&nbsp;

With spring and summer approaching, there are greater opportunities to buy from farmer’s markets. 

“You can get what you want in the quantities you want so that you may have less food waste,” Kiss said. “If you have any wasted food, that’s just money in the garbage can.”&nbsp;

Other opportunities to save include:&nbsp;

●Buy products in bulk, especially non-perishable items.

●Use only as much laundry detergent as required for a load.

●Seek lower-cost substitutes for products you already are buying.&nbsp;

Save costs by taking on some home projects yourself. Some jobs may not be feasible – plumbing can be beyond a simple fix – “but there are some things you can do,” Kiss said. “Cook more from scratch, for example. This time of year, people turn to gardening, which can be an opportunity to increase your access to fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits.”&nbsp;

“Having a list is a very good way to avoid impulse buying at the grocery store,” Kiss said. “With prices being what they are right now, many of us may not have much flexibility for impulse purchases. You really do have to focus on what your needs are. That’s not to say we can’t have some things we want, but plan for those.”&nbsp;

Do the research on larger purchases&nbsp;

Kiss said anticipating a larger purchase may work in your favor. “If you’re anticipating you’re going to have to replace an appliance within the next 3-6 months, now’s a good time to start doing the shopping part of it,” she said. “Research the prices, brands and models as they are today, so that if I have to do it in a hurry, you know how much you’re likely to spend.”&nbsp;

Prices may increase or decrease in the time you’re doing the research, Kiss said, “but the longer you have to plan for that expenses, the better off you may be.”&nbsp;

Kiss said some homeowners may also be able to save money by asking their insurance agent for a review of coverage.&nbsp;

Kiss suggests saving on gas by planning ahead to run several errands on the same trip. She also suggests driving the speed limit, using cruise control and reducing the use of air conditioning and other vehicle accessories. Keep the vehicle well-maintained, including keeping tires inflated appropriately. &nbsp;

“We have so much abundance in our country, so maybe this is a time that we can think about what abundance means to each of us and what satisfies you versus going over the top,” Kiss said.&nbsp;

Red flag warnings have been issued for a large part of Kansas Tuesday, including counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast.

Winds from the south at 30 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, and relative humidity as low as 17 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended, the weather service noted.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Southwest winds will start the day, before turning more west, then northwest with the passage of a cold front during the afternoon and evening hours. Sustained speeds near 25 to 30 mph with gusts near 45 to 50 mph will be possible. Relative humidity is forecast at 12 to 20 percent.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior, according to the weather service. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could result in fire ignition.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Another round of red flag warnings issued for our area

MARION - A small earthquake shook part of Marion County early Monday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.0 magnitude earthquake struck east-northeast of Marion at 12:35 p.m. Monday. It was centered north of Kansas Highway 150 Between Zebulon Road and Yarrow Road.

Minor earthquake shakes part of Marion County Monday

The upcoming Salina Symphony concert not only will close out the season, but it also will bring with it the final candidate for music director and conductor.

The Salina Symphony season will close May 1 at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre with a celebration of movement, melding the driving rhythms of techno with balletic impulse and symphonic grandeur. The Symphony will perform Rachmaninoff’s dynamic Symphonic Dances, a contemporary piece titled Mothership by Mason Bates, and Tchaikovsky’s passionate and exhilarating Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring guest artist Lorraine Min. The concert will be conducted by Vlad Vizireanu, the fifth and final candidate vying for the title of music director and conductor.

Concert tickets may be purchased at the Stiefel Theatre Box Office, by calling 785-827-1998 or online at <a href="http://www.salinasymphony.org">www.salinasymphony.org</a>. Single admission is $29 or $39 and $19 for students.

Described as a conductor with “ample gestures, clarity, precision, and genuine passion,” Vizireanu made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at Barbican Hall as the Second Prize Winner in the 2016 Donatella Flick Competition. He was invited to the 2018 Malko Competition with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen.

He was also invited among 14 conductors (out of 400 applicants worldwide) to participate in the renowned Mahler Conducting Competition with the Bamberg Symphony. He won Second Prize in the 11th International Cadaqués Conducting Competition where he conducted the Cadaqués Symphony in an internationally televised concert in L’Auditori Hall, Barcelona.

In 2013, Vizireanu was invited to debut at the renowned Enescu Festival in Bucharest where he conducted a side-by-side concert with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Royal Camerata. He conducted the Royal Camerata again in the 2015 edition of the Enescu Festival with soloist Rebekka Hartmann. He has since been reinvited to the 2019 and 2021 editions with the Orchestre National de Lille and Wiener Kammerorchester. He is a regular guest conductor in Europe and the United States.

Vizireanu was recently appointed principal Guest conductor of the Ploiești Philharmonic in Romania. He served as music director of the Knox Galesburg Symphony in Illinois and the North Shore Symphony in New York.

An ardent advocate of new music, Vizireanu is the Founder &amp; Executive Director of Impulse New Music Festival (INMF), which brings together young composers and instrumentalists to study and perform new compositions. In addition to INMF’s numerous world premieres, he has showcased new compositions with the Castleton Festival Orchestra, Cadaqués Symphony, and Hebrides New Music Ensemble.

Steinway Artist and critically acclaimed pianist, Lorraine Min has dazzled audiences internationally with her poetic artistry and brilliant virtuosity.

Cited by the New York Times for her “impeccable phrase-shaping (and) crystalline sound,” and by the Washington Post for her “admirable playing,” Min has performed extensively throughout Canada and USA, in Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, India and South America. Born in Victoria and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Min studied on full scholarship at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. On generous scholarships and numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Min received her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School.

Salina Symphony season to close with final music director candidate

When the game is on the line, winning takes a team with players who take pride in their role and trust in each other. Heather Donley knows the success of the beef industry, and our ranches, requires the same team effort. A crucial part of that team includes the Kansas Beef Council (KBC).

Donley, a native of a Minnesota cow-calf operation, ranches with her husband Clint near Ellsworth. She also built a cattle quality management system used by more than 70 feedyards and manages that business. Donley’s relationships with some of the largest beef customers in the nation and extensive beef cattle knowledge made her a unique candidate for a position on the KBC Executive Committee.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Donley’s term begins as the industry is tackling what she calls the fastest-moving topic of her career: sustainability. “The private sector is getting hit hard as consumers want measurements to prove our sustainability,” Donley said. While measuring sustainability is the critical task at hand, the research is far less valuable if we cannot effectively communicate our progress. Donley said, “KBC adds another layer to share that story.”&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Work being done within sustainability is not an easy story to tell. “How ranchers view sustainability may include animal welfare, antibiotics and stewardship. If you talk to end-users, it’s also carbon footprint and methane emissions,” Donley said. “The story is not cookie-cutter. Geographical challenges, resources and Mother Nature mean sustainability is unique to everyone. It’s a challenging story to tell because it's not a one-size-fits-all.”&nbsp;

KBC tells that story while providing programs that increase demand for beef. “KBC’s value to both producers and end-users is educating people on beef, nutritionally and operationally, while telling our story,” Donley said. “The Beef Checkoff is an investment today for our future by highlighting our commitment to work together to positively impact change."

Donley pointed to export markets, research and promotion as three things that undoubtedly bring value to producers. “Export markets support the domestic market and the pricing of our products, which directly benefits ranchers,” Donley said, adding that the research component is important to provide doctors and nutritionists the data they need to educate their patients and clients. Just as valuable is KBC’s ability to effectively tell our story. According to Donley, “The thought process that goes into the strategy for marketing is incredible because it’s so detailed. The goals and the measurements are the same principles we use at the feedyard. I had no idea it was that level of attention to detail.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Translating cattlemen’s progress into consumer-friendly information requires expertise and diligence. “It's like a team,” Donley said. ”Ranchers and feedyards are focused on operational management, weather, inputs and commodities, all while managing risk. KBC is our marketing team. They help tell that story while we are focused on caring for animals.” &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donley sums up KBC’s role as “building trust” within the beef community and, most importantly, with consumers interested in their food sources. “Anything great that is achieved is always achieved by a team,” Donley said. “KBC is a part of our team and they are going to bat for us every day.”

Salina woman arrested on requested drug charges

Three teens were arrested after they were found inside a former grain elevator in the 500 block of N. Ninth Street Saturday afternoon.

The owner of the property notified police after he saw someone in the building via his remote surveillance system. When officers arrived, they found Pierce Hall, 18, of Salina, Fidel Garcia, 18, of Salina, and a 17-year-old inside the building. It was learned that the three were attempting to steal property from inside, Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges reported this morning.

The three were arrested on requested charges of burglary and theft, according to Tonniges. Hall and Garcia also face a requested charge of contributing to a child's misconduct, Tonniges added.

Later, another person reported that the lock was cut and various items stolen from his storage unit, including two bicycles, a power washer, a scuba tank and mask, and various tools. The total value of those items was estimated at $6,500, Tonniges noted.

Surveillance video from the storage lot shows two people cutting the fence on the northwest corner of the lot.

The incidents remain under investigation.

A Salina woman has been arrested in connection to the theft of multiple items from a residence in Gypsum Friday.

Sometime between 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, a number of items including the following were stolen from a residence in the 700 block of Melbert Avenue in Gypsum, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

Soldan said the financial card was used at Dunham Sporting Goods and Five Guys in Salina. An attempt also was made to use the card at Walmart, but it was declined, he said.

The sheriff's office received a tip that the stolen items might be at a residence in west Salina. Deputies went to 603 Jameson Avenue and found the four-wheeler under a tarp in front of the residence. 

A search warrant for the residence was then obtained. A number of the items stolen from Gypsum were located at 603 Jameson Avenue, however, some of the guns have yet to be located, Soldan said.

A resident at 603 Jameson Avenue, Christine Williams, 32, of Salina, was arrested on the following requested charges in the case, Soldan said.

Soldan said additional arrests are expected in the case, which remains under investigation.

Kevin Redetzke was northbound in the 100 block of S. Broadway on a 2007 Big Dog motorcycle when a 2006 GMC Envoy driven by Penney Larsen that had been southbound in the 100 block of N. Broadway made a left-hand turn onto Marietta Avenue in front of the motorcycle, Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges reported this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 5:04 p.m. Saturday.

The motorcycle struck the rear passenger side of the SUV, causing Redetzke to be thrown from the motorcycle.

Redetzke suffered life threatening injuries and was transported first to Salina Regional Health Center then eventually Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Tonniges reported.

The wreck remains under investigation, he added.

Local motorcyclist seriously injured in two-vehicle wreck

ASSARIA - The Saline County Sheriff's Office is looking for a vehicle of interest in the theft of a motorcycle from an Assaria residence during the weekend.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that sometime between 7 p.m. Friday and 6:26 a.m. Saturday, a green 2008 Kawasaki Ninja ZX was stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Cox Way in Assaria. The motorcycle was valued at $6,000.

A white 2005-2007 Ford E350 passenger van with a rear extension was seen in the area on surveillance video. Soldan said sheriff's investigators are looking for information that would help them identify the vehicle and its occupants. Sheriff's office seeks info about vehicle of interest in Assaria theft case

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting on Interstate 70 and have made an arrest.

Just after 9 p.m. Sunday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office responded to 100 Dakota Drive (Dollar General) in Solomon for a report of a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office.

 The investigators learned that 27-year-old Samantha E. Baum of Topeka sustained a single gunshot wound while driving westbound on Interstate 70 near Solomon. 

EMS transported Baum to Salina Regional Health Center where she died, according to the sheriff.

 As a result of the investigation, deputies arrested 48-year-old Eric S. Wymore of Beulah, Colo., on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter and booked him into the Dickinson County Detention Center where he was held without bond pending his first appearance in court.

 </figure>DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting on Interstate 70 and have made an arrest.Just after 9 p.m. Sunday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office responded to 100 Dakota Drive (Dollar General) in Solomon for a report of a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office. The investigators learned that 27-year-old Samantha E. Baum of Topeka sustained a single gunshot wound while driving westbound on Interstate 70 near Solomon. EMS transported Baum to Salina Regional Health Center where she died, according to the sheriff. As a result of the investigation, deputies arrested 48-year-old Eric S. Wymore of Beulah, Colo., on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter and booked him into the Dickinson County Detention Center where he was held without bond pending his first appearance in court.

Severe storms risk heightened for parts of Kansas Tuesday

On March 23, 2022, the Taliban in Afghanistan closed girls’ high schools, hours after they had re-opened. Afghan girls will not be able to attend school beyond fifth grade. As a teacher, I am angry that these students are denied any higher education. Yet this is not a black-and-white issue. And while this Taliban action is among the darkest, much of the rest of the world operates in the gray as well. Given equal test scores and measured abilities, “he” will be paid more and promoted higher than “she.”

Complementarianism is a term used in religious philosophy for a view in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam that men have a God-given role to lead. Women’s role is to follow and be supportive, thus having a complementary role. They contend that women are equal but just “functionally different.” This argument underlies why women cannot be priests or imams. Their duties are limited in some evangelical churches.

In contrast, churches that allow equal access to all positions of authority to both men and women are practicing “egalitarianism.”&nbsp; In this case, women are “functionally equal.”

But our suppression of women is society-wide, from lower pay for the same work to less access to positions of power. This goes far beyond religious institutions and is pervasive worldwide. Why?

&nbsp;There are many possible answers for why males were given more stature. Usually family name stays within the male line. In many cultures, sons have the responsibility to support parents and elderly parents more often live with a married son. A girl’s family may need to provide a dowry to the groom’s family; it is a common custom that elevates males.

Because there is already a discrepancy in equal pay, with males paid higher for the same work, this perpetuates undervaluing the work of women. And the nature of some work is seen as an extension of women’s domestic work. Labeling truck driving as men’s work and nursing as women’s work perpetuates the inequality caused by complementarianism. I am glad to see more women driving trucks and more male nurses.

Teachers’ contracts appear to have the same scale for men and women: strictly based on degree-in-hand and years of teaching experience. Yet surveys still find that women teachers make less than men of equal education and experience because when a female teacher moves to a new district, an administrator may tell them that they won’t be hired unless they claim fewer years of experience. They rarely tell that to men teachers.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

While I am angry that girls in Afghanistan will get less education, I must recognize that we continue to have our own problems such as these. As Americans we have failed to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, and much of the reluctance is a residual belief that women’s work is not as valuable. &nbsp;

China made considerable progress in 1949 as well. But it still has a way to go. Dynastic China suppressed women and limited their education. Ultimately, many women joined the troops that would start a new China in 1949, eliminating foot-binding, arranged marriages, and providing a new equality—almost. Both men and women keep their family name; but their child will carry the father’s family name. In China, professional retirement for men is 60, but for women it is 55. When I argue with party secretaries that this reduces the female leadership in higher ranks, they point out that women like being grandparents at that age since, many children are raised by grandparents. And they do.

Japan, with an ancient history of elevating men above women, may be making headway beyond Western cultures. In a recent issue of “The Week”, they briefly describe a couple “who couldn’t settle on a common last name—required by Japanese law....” They found a solution by “...agreeing to divorce and remarry every three years so they can take turns using their respective last names.” Indeed they got married in 2016, using his name. In 2019 they divorced and remarried under the wife’s maiden name. This July they will divorce again, continuing the name switching.&nbsp; &nbsp;

While I am angry that Afghan girls do not have a right to an education, I can only hope their country will rapidly evolve away from that severe male dominance. But I also know that in the U.S. there is no federal right to an education—it is not in our Constitution. And what is not in the Constitution is reserved to the states. Unfortunately, some states’ legislatures are wanting to move our education back in history and restore old “values.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today is Monday, April 11, the 101st day of 2022. There are 264 days left in the year.

On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which included the Fair Housing Act, a week after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated as Emperor of the French and was banished to the island of Elba. (Napoleon later escaped from Elba and returned to power in March 1815, until his downfall in the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.)

In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln spoke to a crowd outside the White House, saying, "We meet this evening, not in sorrow, but in gladness of heart." (It was the last public address Lincoln would deliver.)

In 1899, the treaty ending the Spanish-American War was declared in effect.

In 1913, Postmaster General Albert S. Burleson, during a meeting of President Woodrow Wilson's Cabinet, proposed gradually segregating whites and Blacks who worked for the Railway Mail Service, a policy that went into effect and spread to other agencies.

In 1945, during World War II, American soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald in Germany.

In 1970, Apollo 13, with astronauts James A. Lovell, Fred W. Haise and Jack Swigert, blasted off on its ill-fated mission to the moon. (The mission was aborted when an oxygen tank exploded April 13. The crew splashed down safely four days after the explosion.)

In 1980, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued regulations specifically prohibiting sexual harassment of workers by supervisors.

In 1996, 7-year-old Jessica Dubroff, who hoped to become the youngest person to fly cross-country, was killed along with her father and flight instructor when their plane crashed after takeoff from Cheyenne, Wyoming.

In 2013, comedian Jonathan Winters, 87, died in Montecito, California.

In 2020, the number of U.S. deaths from the coronavirus eclipsed Italy's for the highest in the world, topping 20,000. On the day before Easter, the Kansas Supreme Court allowed an executive order from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly to remain in effect; it banned religious and funeral services of more than 10 people during the pandemic.

Ten years ago: George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. (He was acquitted at trial.) A California prison panel denied parole to mass murderer Charles Manson in his 12th bid for freedom.

Five years ago: In Dortmund, Germany, three bomb explosions went off near Borussia Dortmund's team bus ahead of a Champions League quarterfinal match, injuring one of the soccer team's players. (Prosecutors alleged that the bomber bet that Borussia Dortmund's shares on the stock exchange would drop in value and tried to disguise the attack as Islamic terrorism; he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 14 years in prison.) Guitarist J. Geils, founder of The J. Geils Band, died in his Massachusetts home at age 71. David Letterman's mother, Dorothy Mengering, a Midwestern homemaker who became an unlikely celebrity on her son's late-night talk show, died at age 95.

One year ago: A Black motorist, 20-year-old Daunte Wright, was shot and killed by a white police officer, Kim Potter, in suburban Minneapolis during a traffic stop. (Potter, who said she had confused her handgun for her Taser, would be convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison.) Iran's underground Natanz atomic facility was struck by a blackout that Iran blamed on "nuclear terrorism." Hideki Matsuyama won the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, becoming the first Japanese golfer to claim the green jacket.
