The City of Salina has announced pavement repair work on Cloud Street.

Work began Tuesday and is expected to continue through Friday.&nbsp;APAC Shears of Salina will perform pavement repair on Cloud Street between S. Broadway Boulevard and S. Ohio Street as part of the annual asphalt mill and inlay project.

The work consists of removing and replacing the existing pavement in preparation for resurfacing later this construction season.

Two way traffic will be maintained while the repairs are being made. Motorists should expect modest delays and are encouraged to avoid the work zones altogether if possible.

The $916,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2022 maintenance capital improvement program.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department this afternoon announced that a part of S. Cunningham Road has been reopened to through traffic.

S. Cunningham Road between E. McReynolds Road and Mentor Road was closed to through traffic on July 12 for the replacement of a cross-road drainage culvert.

Saline County reopens another part of S. Cunningham Road

MCPHERSON - Slim Chickens has opened a location in McPherson. 

The restaurant, at 2188 E. Kansas Avenue, is the eighth Slim Chickens location operated by 3PRG Management, LLC, which has Slim Chickens locations throughout Kansas and Missouri, according to a news release from the company.

“Growing up in Wichita, we know how much people in and around this area enjoy getting together and celebrating life’s moments, both big and small, and Slim Chickens is a great place to celebrate,” said Jamie Rheem, 3PRG Management CEO. “We often see the little league softball team or the high school football team gather at Slim Chickens for a post-game celebration at one table and grandma’s 80th birthday party at the next table – everyone can relax and feel at home at Slims Chickens.”

KDOT employees celebrate service anniversaries

Republican Tony Mattivi believes someone who is a prosecutor is better suited than a politician to be Kansas' next attorney general.

Mattivi, who retired in 2020 as an Assistant United State Attorney and the Antiterrorism and National Security Coordinator for the District of Kansas, is one of three Republicans running for Kansas Attorney General. The other two are Kris Kobach and Kellie Warren. Chris Mann is the lone Democrat who has filed for the position.

"The Kansas Attorney General is the chief law enforcement official of the state. I believe that person should actually be a law enforcement official. Right now, violent crime is surging and law enforcement are desperately under-resourced. We need somebody in the attorney general’s office with decades of experience taking down drug cartels, terrorists, murderers, and foreign spies," Mattivi told Salina Post. "I know how to keep Kansas safe because I’ve spent my career doing it." 

Mattivi said he decided to run at the urging of friends in law enforcement.

"I had no intention of getting into politics- I spent a career staying away from it. But it was my friends in the law enforcement community in this state who convinced me to run. They were concerned that the only people stepping up for the job were career politicians. It was finally my friend Marc Bennett, the DA in Sedgwick County, who convinced me to run because we need an AG who’s a prosecutor, not a politician," Mattivi said.

Mattivi's experience in law enforcement is what he believes sets him apart from the other candidates in the primary election.

"Both of my opponents in this primary are career politicians. They view the AG’s office as a consolation prize or a career stepping stone. If you elect a politician to be your attorney general, you should expect them to make political decisions. That’s what makes me different. I’ll make decisions informed by 30 years of experience in the law," he said. "When I’m running the AG’s office, I’ll be focused on what keeps you safe, not what pads my political resume."

Mattivi said that if elected as the state's next attorney general, his first priority would be to keep Kansas safe. He said an immediate concern is fentanyl. 

"I think we need a taskforce that brings together law enforcement and stakeholders from all walks of life to put aside politics and territorialism and focus on solutions to keep this devastating drug out of our streets," Mattivi said. "I have prosecuted complex drug cases and I’ve prosecuted cases involving weapons of mass destruction. When you look at how much damage miniscule amounts of fentanyl can do, I think it’s time we started treating it more like a weapon of mass destruction."

Mattivi also talked about federal government overreach and the need to protect against that. 

"I want people to know that I am a constitutional conservative and an experienced litigator. I know that our next attorney general will have to go to court, not just against criminals, but also to defend our constitutional liberties," he said.

Mattivi: Prosecutorial experience a must for attorney general

ABILENE – Wally Peterson didn’t want to stop work that day, even though he’d had some headaches and memory loss.

He was headed out to mow for his and his sons’ mowing service, when his wife Cindy told him something was wrong: as he talked, one side of his face wasn’t moving.

But he dismissed the comment and went out to mow. It took a phone call from Cindy to their sons, Josh and Nick, who finally persuaded Wally to go to the emergency room.

The Abilene man found out he had a brain tumor.

Doctors told him he needed surgery to remove it. He was diagnosed with Primary CNS Lymphoma, with a tumor that had moved his brain one and a half centimeters over, causing pressure and the headaches and memory loss he suffered.

Brain surgery removed most of it, then he underwent six rounds of chemotherapy.

He and Cindy made the 300-mile round trip to and from Kansas University Medical Center for the chemo treatments, and when they were done, doctors transplanted his own bone marrow that had been removed before his chemo started.

After the bone marrow transplant, Wally was in the hospital for two weeks, then the couple spent another two weeks in a rented apartment in Kansas City. Doctors didn’t want him to get too far from the hospital, should he need immediate care.

During his cancer journey, the Petersons got financial help from the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund of Dickinson County. Started in 1993 by a gift from Brooks’ estate, the fund provides monies for those in the county undergoing cancer treatment.

Peterson, who retired in January of 2021, had good insurance, but it was the extras that the fund covered: fuel to travel to Kansas City, lodging during the chemo trips, and the rented apartment after the bone marrow transplant.

The money was a godsend, he said. “It meant an awful lot. We didn’t get behind on any bills.” It helped him and Cindy concentrate on him getting better, rather than on finances. “We didn’t have to worry about anything. It took care of expenses.”

At his last appointment, he was cancer free. He’ll have frequent doctor visits for every three to six months, to keep an eye on it, and when he hits the two-year mark for cancer free, his visits will be annually.

He’s back to what he used to do: mowing with his sons, a part-time job as a trash truck driver, and drag racing. He and the boys have drag raced for several years, and he and Cindy see a lot of their five grandkids, ages two months to seven years old.

“Everybody keeps asking me how I’m doing and I tell them I feel normal again,” Wally said. “I’m back to doing what I can do.”

He’s thankful for the help the Elsie Brooks Fund provided. “It really worked out nice. The support was great.”

The Abilene rodeo will host its Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo on Aug. 5, partnering with the Elsie Brooks Fund to raise funds through voluntary donations. The rodeo has worked with the Elsie Brooks fund since 2008 and has raised over $42,000 for the fund.

The Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation will match funds raised at the rodeo, up to $5,000, according to foundation trustee Hank Royer.

The Elsie Brooks Fund has assisted its clients over 1,400 times since it began in 1993.

This year’s Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo takes place in Abilene August 3-6. Performances begin nightly at 7:30 pm.

Abilene rodeo, cancer fund raise money for medical bills

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced 14 communities will receive funding through the Office of Rural Prosperity’s Rural Mural and Public Art grant program. 

The $90,000 in grants enables communities with fewer than 10,000 residents to create new murals and public art projects that will beautify community gathering spaces and serve as new tourist attractions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“By funding the creation of murals and public art in communities across Kansas, we want to celebrate the beauty of our state and highlight everything our small towns have to offer,”&nbsp;said Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;

Each of the projects requires a 1:1 match from the community. Seventy-five percent of the grant funding will be gifted up front as several of the city projects plan to start in the next two weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Rural Kansas has the opportunity to be a more popular tourist destination, which will promote economic growth in the smallest of Kansas communities,”&nbsp;said Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland. “The development of high-quality destinations and improved infrastructure across the state will make these featured attractions more valuable and easier to reach than ever before.”&nbsp;

The organizations that are being awarded for fiscal year 2023 include:&nbsp;

NWS: Temperatures to max out above 100 Tuesday afternoon

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has closed part of S. Cunningham Road for drainage work.

S. Cunningham Road between Kansas Highway 4 and E. McReynolds Road for replacement of a cross-road drainage culvert. Weather permitting the roadway will be opened by the end of Friday. 

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies, according to a news release from the Road and Bridge Department.

Saline County closes part of S. Cunningham Road for drainage work

<a href="http://www.salinaarts.com/" target="_blank">Salina Arts &amp; Humanities</a>&nbsp;loans out city-owned art to spaces where the community can enjoy them and K-State Salina has been selected to be the new home of the Birds of a Feather mural. It depicts a joyful hummingbird drinking nectar from a flower with vibrant colors accompanying the image to illustrate the beauty of nature. "We are honored and delighted to be picked as the home of this beautiful mural," said K-State CEO and Dean Alysia Starkey. "With how impactful the arts are in Salina, it is important that our campus showcases itself as a valued community partner. Salina is our home and we deeply appreciate the connection between our campus and this community for generations to come." Artist Scribe made Birds of a Feather in 2021. The 12-foot-by-8-foot mural is composed of three framed plywood sheets. It was a part of the 2021 Smoky Hill River Festival in Salina, where artists from around the country showcase their artwork to festival attendees. The piece was then acquired through the city of Salina Public Art Collection, with K-State Salina ultimately selected as its permanent home. The purpose of the program is so Salina Arts &amp; Humanities can create partnerships with entities around the Salina area and loan out art to spaces where the community can enjoy them. "This community mural is a perfect fit for the K-State&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;campus," said Brad Anderson, Salina&nbsp;Arts&nbsp;&amp; Humanities executive director. "The Aerospace and Technology Campus is creatively engaged with the community, which is reflected in the theme of the public mural on their walls." More 100+ degree days expected as Salina, others already hit norm

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;The terms cybersecurity and cyber insurance are more than just concepts in the agriculture industry, said Kansas State University cropping systems economist Terry Griffin. &nbsp;

He said the agricultural industry is becoming more digital, so adaptable cybersecurity – or, the protection of computer systems from information disclosure or theft, or damage to hardware, software or electronic data -- is more important than ever.&nbsp;

“As a producer, we have to think about who (our) biggest threat is potentially,” Griffin said. “The Kansas farmland market is fierce, but not as fierce as in Illinois, so the biggest threat to a Kansas farmer could be seen as a different entity.” &nbsp;

Griffin said cybersecurity risk depends on the location and risk preference of the farmer and who they see as their biggest threat. This could be as simple as someone getting a copy of data or insights, or data becoming inaccessible to the farmer. &nbsp;

“There could be solar flares that impact space weather that can adversely affect GPS,” he said. “In that event, we could be at a disadvantage during planting because there might not be row markers on the large planters anymore.”&nbsp;

He said such a situation can also affect harvest because farmers won’t be able to log data. &nbsp;

Griffin said time is of the essence when a cybersecurity breach is detected, and if farmers decide to not plant and wait a day because the GPS is down - or they can’t control the overlaps - it could have negative implications, such as lower yields.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are currently no state or federal laws that cover cybersecurity for farms. Griffin suggests a couple ideas to protect farm data:&nbsp;

●Have employees sign a non-disclosure agreement.

●Make sure when an employee leaves that their connections to farm data has been stopped.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There are some actionable things that farm operators can do to show that their data has value,” Griffin said. “These are some best management practices for data management.” &nbsp;

He said farmers should build up these practices over time so that they become habit. &nbsp;

K-State ag economist: Farm cybersecurity depends on locale, risk preference

One year ago: A Florida man, Paul Allard Hodgkins, who breached the U.S. Senate chamber on Jan. 6 carrying a Trump campaign flag received an eight-month prison term; it was the first resolution for a felony case in the Capitol insurrection. The Biden administration took a step toward its goal of shutting down the Guantánamo Bay detention center for terror suspects, releasing into the custody of his home country a Moroccan (Abdullatif Nasser) who'd been held without charge almost since the U.S. opened the facility 19 years earlier. Ben &amp; Jerry's said it would stop selling its ice cream in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and contested east Jerusalem, saying sales in the territories sought by the Palestinians were inconsistent with the company's values.

Road, budget items on Saline County Commission agenda

ELLSWORTH — A Wilson, Kansas man has been convicted of child sex crimes under the Kansas version of Jessica’s Law, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt

Jason Cunningham, 36, was found guilty late Friday by an Ellsworth County jury of two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, one count of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, one count of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, one count of indecent liberties with a child, one count of aggravated intimidation of a victim, and two counts of promoting obscenity to a minor. 

The jury acquitted the defendant on other counts.&nbsp;The verdict was accepted by Ellsworth County District Judge Carey Hipp. The sentencing date for Cunningham has not yet been set.

The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Northeast Child Victim Task force with the assistance from additional KBI agents, the Wilson Police Department and the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said the crimes occurred between 2014 and 2020 and involved two minor children at the time the crimes were committed.
