I am not going to sugarcoat it, instead I am going to hit this head on. Every one of our members need to get out and vote and your neighbors need to get out and vote — agriculture depends on it. Historically when those of us from farms and ranches and our rural communities have shown up at the ballot box, we have carried the day. But recently we have gotten lax about going to the polls. In 2020, just under 68 percent of voters in the largely rural 1st&nbsp;Congressional District cast ballots. In the compact, urban 3rd&nbsp;District, turnout topped 75 percent of eligible voters. I get it if it is fatigue from all of the haggling or wrangling. I am tired of it too. I don’t care why you might not have voted in the past, I am telling you to get out and vote in this election because it absolutely will matter. Recently we have seen elections turn on just a few votes, elections right here in our own state. Don’t tell me your single vote doesn’t matter because it does. My parents instilled in me the need to get out and vote in every election, and I can proudly say I have never missed the opportunity to cast a ballot. I believe my mother told me that you do not have the option to complain about the government if you did not vote. Rural voters might be a minority in Kansas, but we have proven time and time again that when we go to the polls, we have an impact and often sway the election our way. Am I going to tell you how to vote? No, but if you want my advice and opinion, I would be happy to share it with you. I would urge you to look at the list of candidates endorsed by KFB’s Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF), our organization’s political action committee. VOTE FBF is a group of Farm Bureau members, elected from all 10 districts who research races, solicit feedback from county Farm Bureaus and endorse candidates friendly to agriculture. You may view endorsements at&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=727af882cf&amp;e=f3a072990a" target="_blank">www.kfb.org/votefbf</a>. We need to make sure we elect farm-friendly legislators who will make decisions in the best interest of agriculture. My message is urgent because we have to mobilize the rural vote. We each need to make sure our friends, family and neighbors are registered to vote by Oct. 18. Make sure they know how critical it is for each of us to exercise our right to cast a ballot. I cannot say it strongly enough, if we do not get out and vote, important decisions that affect our way of life will be made by voters who do not understand how those decisions impact us. So, do your homework, look at the list of Vote FBF endorsed candidates and make sure you get to the polls on Nov. 8. If you can’t make it in person, you still have the opportunity to cast a mail ballot or go to the courthouse and cast an absentee ballot. There are no excuses for not voting, our businesses and livelihoods depend on it.

INSIGHT: The rural impact

Today is Wednesday, Oct. 5, the 278th day of 2022. There are 87 days left in the year.

On Oct. 5, 1953, Earl Warren was sworn in as the 14th chief justice of the United States, succeeding Fred M. Vinson.

In 1892, the Dalton Gang, notorious for its train robberies, was practically wiped out while attempting to rob a pair of banks in Coffeyville, Kansas.

In 1947, President Harry S. Truman delivered the first televised White House address as he spoke on the world food crisis.

In 1958, racially-desegregated Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee, was mostly leveled by an early morning bombing.

In 1983, Solidarity founder Lech Walesa was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1989, a jury in Charlotte, North Carolina, convicted former P-T-L evangelist Jim Bakker of using his television show to defraud followers. (Although initially sentenced to 45 years in prison, Bakker was freed in December 1994 after serving 4 1/2 years.)

Five years ago: Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein announced that he was taking a leave of absence from his company after a New York Times article detailed decades of alleged sexual harassment against women including actor Ashley Judd. The National Rifle Association and the White House expressed support for controls on "bump stock" devices like those that apparently aided the gunman behind the Las Vegas attack; the NRA later said it was opposed to an outright ban on the devices. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation extending protections for immigrants living in the United States illegally; police in California would be barred from asking people about their immigration status or taking part in federal immigration enforcement activities.

One year ago: A former Facebook employee, data scientist Frances Haugen, told a Senate panel that the company knew that its platform spread misinformation and content that harmed children, but that it refused to make changes that could hurt its profits. Work at all of the Kellogg Company's U.S. cereal plants came to a halt as roughly 1,400 workers went on strike. (The strike would end in December after workers voted to ratify a new contract.) A Russian actor and a film director rocketed into space on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to make the world's first movie in orbit during a 12-day stay on the International Space Station.

Your password is the key to all the personal information in your account. Make it long. Avoid common words. And don’t re-use it.

A local woman was transported to the hospital after a head-on collision Monday afternoon in western Salina.

Cory Newell, 36, of Salina, was westbound in the 1500 block of W. Crawford Street when his 2020 Ford transit van was struck head on by a 2010 Dodge Charger driven by Mahala Shepherd, 29, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. Monday.

A officer observed Shepherd sitting in the driver's seat of the Charger allegedly huffing from a can of Dust-Off, according to Forrester.

Shepherd was transported to Salina Regional Health Center.

Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage and were towed from the scene.

Forrester said requested charges for Shepherd include the following.

KWU to be part of Salina Economic Outlook Conference

It’s a constant news headline, the joke of every meme, and the word we curse under our breath every time we have to put the fancy bacon back on the shelf and grab the generic&nbsp;turkey&nbsp;bacon instead. Whether we want to admit it or not, inflation is here, and it’s sticking around, folks. But first, what even is it?

All you need to remember here is the basic law of supply and demand. Oversupply means prices go down. And undersupply means prices go up, aka inflation. But what I want to remind you is that even if&nbsp;you can’t control how much inflation rises from month to month, there’s still plenty of ways you can beat inflation without resorting to turkey bacon.

Now, the first thing to do is make sure the most important things in your budget are covered. No, I’m not talking about your Amazon Prime membership. I’m talking about what I call your Four Walls: food, utilities, shelter and transportation. So, here’s my plan for how to beat inflation and keep your Four Walls strong!

1. Shop at the cheapest grocery stores.&nbsp;If you really want to cut back on your bill, rethink where you shop. In the U.S., some of the&nbsp;cheapest grocery stores&nbsp;are&nbsp;Aldi, WinCo Foods, Food 4 Less, Costco,&nbsp;Walmart&nbsp;and Trader Joe’s.

2. Cut out the wants, and only buy the items you need.&nbsp;You need breakfast, lunch and dinner—you don’t&nbsp;need&nbsp;that fresh watermelon that costs $7 because someone else cut it for you. If your grocery bill is out of hand, take a serious look at your needs versus your nice-to-haves.

4. Use cash-back apps and coupons.&nbsp;Use&nbsp;cash-back reward apps,&nbsp;like Ibotta or Fetch Rewards, to help you save. While rebates don’t give you a discount up front, the cash-back savings will add up. And don’t knock the power of the O.G.&nbsp;paper or digital coupon&nbsp;either. But remember, never spend just to save. Don’t buy name brand just because you get cash back. Do the math and buy the most affordable option that gets the job done.

1. Don’t run appliances unless they’re full.&nbsp;Your husband spilled coffee all over his pants—again. But instead of washing those soiled khakis alone, wait until you can run a full load. And when it comes to the dishwasher, the same thing applies (but to be clear, don’t put pants in there).

2. Program your thermostat.&nbsp;You can save as much as 10% a year if you drop your thermostat down 7–10 degrees for eight hours a day.<a href="https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy18osti/70073.pdf" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;So turn down the thermostat before you head out the door.

3. Use less.&nbsp;This is a no-brainer, right? One of the best things you can do to save on utilities is to simply use less. Even the little things like turning off the lights can do a lot to keep you from using more.

1. Be a smart renter.&nbsp;Getting a roommate (even if they’re quirky) can cut your rent in half—or more. And if you know you want to stay in the place you’re in right now, see if your landlord will drop your monthly rent if you sign a 16-month or 18-month lease.

2. Make sure your house payment isn’t more than 25% of your monthly take-home pay.&nbsp;You don’t want to be house poor at any time, and&nbsp;definitely&nbsp;not with inflation on the loose. Making sure your house payment isn’t eating up too much of your income will help you have enough breathing room in your budget to live.

3. If you’re buying a house, save 20% for a down payment to avoid PMI.&nbsp;The more money you have for a&nbsp;down payment, the better—because it’ll lead to a smaller mortgage. Plus, saving 20% will save you from having to pay private mortgage insurance (PMI), which will lower your monthly mortgage payment!

1. Use apps to track the cheapest gas prices.&nbsp;You don’t have to waste gas driving around town looking for a good deal. Just use an app like GasBuddy or Waze to find the cheapest gas prices in your area.

2. Shop around for auto insurance rates.&nbsp;It’s always worth seeing if you can score a&nbsp;cheaper auto insurance rate. If you can lower your yearly premium by $375, that would free up more than $30 in your budget each month!

3. Carpool.&nbsp;Hear me out. I know you like to fly solo, but carpooling to the office, to school or to the kids’ soccer game is a great way to&nbsp;build some human connection&nbsp;while saving money too.

Now, that’s a lot. But don’t let it all overwhelm you—you’ve got this! Prices going up just means you have to rework your budget.&nbsp;So, keep an eye on things, track what you spend, and make tweaks as you need to. Then tell those rising prices to kick rocks and pound sand—because you’ve got a plan to fight inflation. Saline County is proud to announce the launch of a new website designed by Gov Built, a Manhattan-based, award-winning company specializing in online access and services for both citizens and municipalities across the U.S.

"Our old website was ready for a facelift," explained Jim Weese, Saline County Commission Chairman. "We signed a contract with GovBuilt around ten months ago. Since then, a team of our staff members has worked diligently with the company to design a site that is useful, informative, and easy to navigate. I'd like to thank the website team and GovBuilt for their many hours of work. I truly believe that our citizens will benefit from and enjoy the fruits of their labor."

An effective website essentially creates a virtual County administration office where citizens can serve themselves and avoid waiting in line or trips to the building. Residents will save time searching and be able to find their needed information within a couple of clicks.

"GovBuilt was super excited to be collaborating with Saline County as they took their citizens' engagement and online services to the next level," said Robert Disberger, GovBuilt Vice President of Sales. "We built an entirely new site from the ground up."

The new site features a fresh and modern layout, self-service options, and easy-to-find departmental and government information. &nbsp;Users will also find the site to be more mobile-friendly, making it easier to find information on the go.&nbsp;

"We made the switch to provide a newer, more modern website for Saline County constituents to use," explained Brad Bowers, Saline County Director of Information Technology. Saline County launches new website

According to the Salina Fire Department, on Saturday at approximately 9:45 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a fire near Downtown Auto Service located at 119 S. Eighth St.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eyewitness to the fire, Tyler Sartain —&nbsp;a congregant of the Heartland Worship Center located across the street from Downtown Auto Service —&nbsp;noticed the fire as he left the church after preparing for service the following morning. Congregant Mario Aviles was also with him.&nbsp;

"I saw a glow coming from the front doors of the church, but at first I thought it could've been a cop going by with his lights on," Sartain said. "But it kept getting brighter."&nbsp;

When Sartain looked outside, he saw the tire pile engulfed in flames. As soon as Sartain discovered the fire, he and Aviles went into the church and called 911. Sartain and Aviles took fire extinguishers from the church to try and extinguish the blaze.&nbsp;

"By the time we got there, it was too hot and too big for the extinguishers to do anything," Sartain said.&nbsp;

Salina firefighters made it to the scene and were able to put out the fire. There were no injuries as a result of the fire, but Downtown Auto Service sustained damaged.&nbsp;According to SFD Battalion Chief Kirk Stover, the cause of the fire is under investigation.&nbsp;
