According to Salina Police, sometime between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Thursday, a Salina woman discovered the theft of a handgun.

Kylie Morgan, 43, told police a Ruger Sturm 9 mm semi-automatic handgun had been stolen from a vehicle. The gun was fully loaded and was valued at $380.

 No other information is known at this time.

Frost advisories have been issued for some counties in our area for early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a frost advisory in effect from 1-9 a.m. Saturday that includes Jewell County.

Temperatures as low as 33 will result in frost formation.

There remains some uncertainty as to thickness and persistence of potential cloud cover late overnight, so confidence in frost is only medium from Arapahoe, Neb., to Mankato, Kan.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a frost advisory in effect from 1-9 a.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Before joining K-State Salina, James was the vice president for business and finance at Tabor College in Hillsboro for the last four years. "With the campus's vision to become a global leader in aerospace and technology and the construction of a new residence hall, it will be exciting to watch these initiatives elevate the campus into the future." James will oversee the campus's security, IT, facilities and accounting departments. He will utilize a high-level strategy on how the campus can best use its funds and what projects come first. My wife and I are in our late-twenties, and we have a full emergency fund saved up. Our only debt is our home. We have talked about having a child sometime next year, but I am on the road three weeks a month for my job. I don’t want to be gone so much once we have a child, and I am thinking about opening my own business, so I can eliminate the travel and control my hours better. Do you have any thoughts on this situation?

An entrepreneur is the person I know who can go from sheer terror to sheer exhilaration and back every few hours. You’ve got to have a strong mind and a strong heart to be successful, plus there’s a good chance your idea won’t last long&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/should-i-quit-my-job-quiz" target="_blank">if you don’t love what you’re doing</a>. Remember, too, you’re basically on straight commission as an entrepreneur, and there probably wouldn’t be a regular paycheck you could count on for a while.

Okay, that was a quick dose of reality. Now, if time and money weren’t considerations, what would you rather do—stay at your current job or run your own business?

My advice to anyone, entrepreneur or not, is to make sure your work falls in line with the passions, skills and talents you were born with. You don’t need to work in the construction business if you don’t like being outdoors and working with your hands, just like you don’t want to be stuck in a call center if you hate talking on the phone and being cooped up inside all day.

Everyone wants to be successful in their job, enjoy what they do and make lots of money. But personal happiness is just as important. If you wake up excited about what you’re facing every day, chances are you’ll be successful&nbsp;and&nbsp;happy. If you wake up dreading the day and your job, I can almost guarantee you won’t be successful&nbsp;or&nbsp;happy.

You’ve got a lot more thinking and research to do, Mike. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/career-clarity-guide" target="_blank">change jobs</a>&nbsp;or be an entrepreneur. The Office of the State Fire Marshal awarded much needed funds to 89 fire departments in Kansas through the Kansas Firefighter Recruitment and Safety Grant Program, totally $1.3 million. 

The OSFM made this grant possible through its budget passed by the State Legislature and signed by Governor Laura Kelly. This year, an additional $1.2 million was made available to OSFM for this grant by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Along with $100,000 provided through our budget, the 2023 KFRSG had a total of $1.3 million to disburse.

This year, over $2.4 million was requested by 97 volunteer/part-time fire departments in Kansas for safety gear, washer/extractor machines and junior firefighter programs. Departments received close to $1.2 million to be used for safety gear, $106,000 for 20 washer/extractor machines, and $1,200 for the junior firefighter programs. Due to the high number of requests, OSFM will be requesting the 2023 Legislature continue funding this important grant.

“Every year, we see an increase in requests for this grant,” State Fire Marshal Doug Jorgensen said. “This year was unique, in that, we had the extra dollars from ARPA. The funding will go a long way in providing these smaller, but vital departments with the gear and equipment they need to continue keeping their communities safe.”&nbsp;

Volunteer and part-time fire departments face recruitment and retention challenges because they do not have the funding to provide safety equipment. Without new equipment provided by the recruiting fire department, potential volunteers are faced with not only donating their time but also providing their own safety gear, sharing gear with others, or doing without. There is also a proven increase in cancer diagnoses for firefighters, which can be caused by prolonged exposure to carcinogens, particulates, and biohazards. The proper gear, regular cleaning of that gear and equipment, along with preventative healthcare is crucial for a firefighter’s health and well-being.

BOOM! Salina has begun and the first of the murals is in the books.

The mural, Three Kinds of Sons by Tony Sjöman, a Manhattan, N.Y.-based artist, is on the south wall of Mid-Kansas Title Co. Inc., 217 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Sjöman made it official by signing the art during a brief ceremony this morning. The mural was created with acrylic latex and spray paint on a brick wall and measures 90 feet by 32 feet.

The first BOOM! Salina Street Art and Mural Festival is going on now through Oct. 16 in downtown Salina. It is being organized by the Salina Kanvas Project in cooperation with Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, the Stiefel Theatre, Theatre Salina, Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, The Salina Art Center, Salina 2020, and Salina Downtown, Inc.

During the festival, additional artists will be painting murals at four other downtown Salina locations. In addition to the artists creating the murals, the festival also will include live music Oct. 14-15 at the Love Salina stage in Campbell Plaza.

Additionally, Martha Cooper, known as the godmother of street art photography, is scheduled to have an exhibition of her photographs at the Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue, through Oct. 23.

Cooper is a documentary photographer specializing in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for more than 40 years, according to information on the <a href="https://www.boomsalina.art/">BOOM! Salina website</a>.

"In 1977, Martha moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer at the NY Post for three years. During that time she began to document graffiti and B-Boying, subjects which led to her extensive coverage of early Hip Hop as it emerged from the Bronx," the <a href="https://www.boomsalina.art/">BOOM! Salina website</a> noted.

In addition to the exhibition, the Salina Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe Avenue, will screen a film about Cooper - Martha: A Picture Story - at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12. The cost is $6 per person.

A BOOM! Salina muralist panel discussion is scheduled to follow at 7:30 p.m. in the Salina Art Center.

BOOM! Salina now underway; first mural completed

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday, a blue Dodge 1500 pickup rear-ended a 2008 GMC Acadia while it was stopped at a red light on Ninth St.&nbsp; A witness to the hit-and-run followed the pickup and notified police of the incident.&nbsp;

The witness told police they saw the vehicle stop in the 2400 block of Robin Road. Four suspects exited the vehicle and removed the license plate. All suspects were last seen running east of the scene. The witness described the suspects as possibly two black men and two Hispanic women.

Police officers ran the vehicle registration number for the Dodge pickup and identified the owner of the vehicle to be 66-year-old, C.J. Richardson of Salina, who reported the vehicle missing from the 700 block of North Eighth Street.&nbsp;

The driver of the Acadia, Janet Gilger a 68-year-old from South Dakota, and 67-year-old passenger from Salina were not injured. The Acadia sustained damage to the rear end but was able to be driven away from the scene.&nbsp;

Stolen in Salina: Customized Polaris valued at $25,000

According to the Saline County Sheriff Captain Hughes, a red Polaris all-terrain vehicle was stolen from the construction site of the jail and sheriff's office at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday. 

The theft occurred after a construction worker parked the Polaris and left. The worker returned to the Polaris a few minutes later to find the vehicle had been stolen. 

On Wednesday evening, deputies were dispatched to the 3000 block of East Mariposa Road to reports of an abandoned vehicle that matched the description of the missing Polaris. 

When deputies arrived at the scene, they identified the vehicle was the missing ATV stolen from the jail construction site. Deputies are currently in process of returning the vehicle to its owner.

Shaw explores found and fabricated objects salvaged from his family farm that were willfully collected or simply forgotten. Collectively, these oddities provoke a state of puzzlement. The exploration considers the meanings we assign to "things" and the answers we are continually searching for.

Shaw received his BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., and an MFA from Yale University School of Art in New Haven, Conn. His paintings have recently been featured in the United States Embassy Art in Embassies Program in Bridgetown, West Indies. His work has also been exhibited in numerous exhibitions including Artspace Gallery, Lindsborg; Project Gallery, Wichita; Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.; Butler County Community College, El Dorado; Wichita State University, Wichita; Emporia State University, Emporia; Nancy Lurie Gallery, Chicago, Ill.; Marilyn Pearl Gallery, New York, N.Y.; and the Salina Art Center and the Land Institute, Salina.

ABILENE - A Brain, Heart, and Courage: What Six Teenagers Taught Me About Leadership, is the October Evenings at Ease program from the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene.

The presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday and is scheduled to feature Emily Smith, a doctoral student at Kansas State University. The program will be held in the Eisenhower Library Auditorium and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skM4oPEn7gg">streamed online</a>.

Smith taught journalism at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg for almost 15 years. In April 2017, Pittsburg High School hired a new principal who resigned after student journalists investigated and reported on her falsified credentials. 

"My students taught me what real leadership is as we survived an international news sensation amidst conflict and controversy at home in our school and community," Smith noted.
