Local, area bodies of water under blue-green algae advisories

The Tri-Rivers Fair is just around the corner!

Pre-fair activities begin July 30, with the fair itself scheduled for Aug. 3-7 in Kenwood Park.

If you are interested in being in the fair parade at 7 p.m. on Aug. 2, you still have time to enter. The parade is scheduled to travel south on Santa Fe Avenue from Elm Street to Prescott Avenue. (And if you can't make it in person to watch, the parade is scheduled to live stream on Salina Post!)

The 4-H Dog Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 30 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall at Tony's Pizza Events Center.

The Demolition Derby is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 30 at Salina Speedway, 2841 S. Burma Road. Pits open at 3 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-12. Tickets will be sold at the gate only.

The 4-H Fashion Revue is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 31 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall at Tony's Pizza Events Center.

Heat advisories issued for our area for Friday, Saturday

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just after 5 p.m. Thursday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by Christian A. Stevens, 20, Wakefield, was eastbound on Kansas 18.

The driver failed to yield while making a left turn onto the Kansas 15 northbound junction. The Chevy struck a 2018 Chevy Traverse driven by Andrea C. Ewers, 55, Abilene.

EMS transported Ewers to an area hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stevens was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Salina's Tripp among Kansas Lottery promotion finalists

A Salina man was injured in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday night in central Salina.

Federico Merrell, 58, of Salina, was northbound on S. Fifth Street when his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was struck at the intersection with E. South Street by an eastbound 2012 GMC Sierra driven by Chase Young, 19, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:25 p.m. Wednesday.

Merrell suffered minor injuries and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center.

The Grand Cherokee sustained driver-side damage and the Sierra sustained front-end damage. Both were towed from the scene.

Young was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign, Forrester said.

Salina man injured in two-vehicle accident; teen driver cited

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding a vehicle and its driver that clipped a bicycle rider on N. Ohio Street Wednesday afternoon.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a 37-year-old Salina man was riding a bicycle southbound in the bike lane on N. Ohio Street just outside the city limits near the N. Ohio Street/E. Stimmel Road intersection at approximately 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, causing him to crash.

The bicycle rider told deputies that the crash knocked him out for a bit, Melander said. When he came to, he called a relative to come get him. The relative insisted on taking the man to Salina Regional Health Center to be checked out. Melander said the man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

With the help of officers from the Salina Police Department, deputies were able to locate a vehicle part they believe came off the vehicle that struck the rider, Melander said. With the part, deputies were able to determine that they are looking for a 2016 or 2017 white or pearl-colored Nissan Altima that could have damage on the passenger side and be missing part or all of a side mirror, he said.

True story. A friend of mine’s 15-year-old son needed to take Tylenol for a headache that he had at school. In order to take the Tylenol, he needed his parents’ permission as well as his doctor’s permission. However, if Value Them Both does not pass, there is a very likely chance that in Kansas a 15-year-old would not need her parents’ or doctor’s permission to have an abortion? This doesn’t seem right.

On August 2, the Value Them Both Amendment is on the ballot. Several years ago, the Kansas Supreme Court decided that abortion is a constitutional right. Because of that, many of the commonsense restrictions on the abortion industry could go by the wayside, like a sandcastle on the beach. A “yes” vote for the Value Them Both Amendment will ensure our ability to keep basic regulations on the abortion industry and to protect both mothers and babies.

But here is another thought on why I think Kansans should vote yes on the Value Them Both Amendment. St. Teresa of Calcutta once said that it should not surprise us when we hear of killings and wars and the disrespect for human life. She said that if we kill the unborn, the weakest in society, there will be no stopping killing others. We all can see how much destruction of life is in society through shootings and wars. Let’s start choosing life and love in our society by protecting mothers and babies.

Police are investigating the theft of a gun from a vehicle in north Salina.

The Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair is now accepting entries for the 2022 parade on Sept. 24.

Salina's Old West is the theme for this year's parade, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 24 at the N. Santa Fe Avenue/Elm Street intersection. The parade will travel south on Santa Fe Avenue and conclude at South Street.

City of Salina: Street work continues at multiple locations

ABILENE - Advanced voting currently is underway at the Dickinson County Courthouse, making it an official polling site.

That means protesters who have been gathering on the courthouse grounds holding signs regarding the Value Them Both amendment are breaking the law and may be arrested.

Recently, protesters have set up on Sundays at the corner of First Street and Buckeye, outside the courthouse with signs regarding the Value Them Both amendment

The protesters are in violation of Kansas Electioneering law, K.S.A. 25-2430. Electioneering is “knowingly attempting to persuade or influence eligible voters to vote for or against a particular candidate, party or question submitted.”

Electioneering is not allowed within 250 feet from the entrance of a polling site. Violating the state’s electioneering law is a class C misdemeanor and can lead to an arrest.

The courthouse will be a polling site until advanced voting ends at noon on Aug. 1. With the ballot drop-off inside the front entrance, this means the courthouse is considered a polling place 24 hours a day and on weekends, even when the courthouse is closed. Therefore, between now and election day, protesters will have to select locations off the courthouse property to avoid violating the law.

Electioneering includes wearing, exhibiting or distributing labels, signs, posters, stickers or other materials that clearly identify a candidate or an issue, explained Dickinson County Clerk/Election Officer Jeanne Livingston.

The Value Them Both amendment is a very “polarizing” issue, leading to strong sentiments on either side. However, protesters attempting to influence a yes or no vote through signs and posters are considered to be electioneering, thus, they cannot gather on the courthouse grounds until advanced voting ends.

As the volunteer sponsor of the 2022 Senior LPGA Championship at the Salina Country Club later this week, the Kansas Department of Commerce has assembled "The Governor's Team" to play in the Pro-Am Tournament Thursday.

The 2022 Senior LPGA Championship is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday at the Salina Country Club. Annika Sörenstam is scheduled to headline the 78-player field for the 2022 Senior LPGA Championship.

Likewise, Governor Laura Kelly's team for the Pro-Am event Thursday has some of the state's best collegiate golfers: Aliyah North (Fort Hays State University), Gianna Augustine (Kansas State University), Hannah Hawks (University of Kansas), and Megan Lucas (Wichita State University). A senior pro will be named after the pairing party on Wednesday evening.

Adam Roorbach, Kansas Department of Commerce's Kansas Sports Tourism, said, “The State of Kansas is proud to sponsor this event. Bringing the Senior LPGA Championship event will have a significant impact on the Kansas economy. The Salina Country Club will provide a wonderful experience to participants and spectators from throughout the world. Ultimately, Kansas is a wonderful place to visit, work, live and play, and the Senior LPGA Championship will showcase just that!"

The Pro-Am is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at noon on Thursday with 17 teams competing. Each team will consist of four amateur players and one senior pro. Several local businesses have sponsored teams and viewing of the event is open to the public.

Governor's Team for Senior LPGA Pro-Am in Salina to feature top collegiate golfers

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court appointed seven new members to the Advisory Council on Dispute Resolution. Newly appointed members will serve four-year terms ending June 30, 2025. They are:&nbsp;

●Retired Chief Judge Jerome Helmer, Salina, serving until June 30, 2024

Amanda Jacobsen was appointed as the permanent representative of the Office of Judicial Administration.

The Dispute Resolution Act established dispute resolution as a way to resolve issues other than by litigation, using an impartial third party to help two sides reach a settlement.&nbsp;&nbsp; Council members are knowledgeable and trained in dispute resolution. The council advises the Supreme Court and its director of dispute resolution.
