TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to October 31, as do the harmful algae blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. This year, the season ends with some water bodies still on active advisory. These advisories will be lifted in consultation with lake managers when blooms have dissipated. If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Blue-green algae advisories continue for local, area bodies of water

Pizza was for breakfast this morning as Schwan's in partnership with its parent company, CJ Foods, announced plans for a new distribution center located at the Schwan's Pizza campus.   

The state-of-the-art 140,000-square-foot refrigerated distribution center will be built at its pizza-manufacturing facility in the Salina Airport Industrial Center. The news comes two years after Schwan's announced plans to expand its pizza plant with 400,000 square feet of new manufacturing space along with the creation of 225 new jobs. 

The new distribution center space will be used to store food produced by employees at the company’s pizza plant. The facility will include a 38,000-pallet-position racking system with three automated pallet cranes.  

“In 2020, we had the honor of announcing to the Salina community a major investment that would enable us to continue to provide delicious pizzas to millions of families for decades to come. I feel a lot of pride and I am also very much humbled by everyone’s execution on this project. We are set to begin making pizzas at our new facility in December, and this new distribution center will support our expanded production capabilities over the long term,” said Schwan’s Company CEO Dimitrios Smyrnios.

"We are going to have a distribution center that joins this building and our current distribution center. Because the Salina campus is going to be the hub of not just pizza brands, but we will bring bibigo Asian food, deserts, mix them and then distribute them out to our customers that are throughout the United States."  

According to Schwan's, the additional distribution center project announced today will begin in 2023 and is expected to be completed in early 2025. Upon completion of the new distribution center, the company will have additional space of 245,000 square feet at its Salina plant, bringing its total manufacturing facility and distribution center space to more than 1 million square feet.  

Governor Laura Kelly, Lieutenant Governor David Toland and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran attended the announcement and extended their congratulatory remarks and sense of optimism regarding the company's announcement.  

"I commend the city of Salina, the Salina Airport Authority, Saline County, and all the folks with economic development and the Chamber of Commerce officials who made the effort to demonstrate to Schwan's that this was the place for the expansion," said Moran. "This was a national and international competition, and doesn't it make us feel good that Salina, Kansas, wins that competition." 

Toland, who also serves as commerce secretary, spoke on the importance of involving international brands when it comes to economic development in Kansas.

"We know that none of this happened by accident. It happened through planning and vision and execution and Schwan's bringing together the best people," Toland said.

"I'd be remised if I didn't note that, on Day One of the Kelly administration, Governor Kelly directed that we rebuild our international team. And with CJ being the parent company of Schwan's, it has been so important for us to have the international team in Topeka work to build and foster relationships like this with Schwan's, as well as with so many other companies around the world." 

Kelly congratulated and thanked Schwan's for their investment in the central Kansas economy and reflected on the economic success the state has experienced over the past years. 

"It is clear that Schwan's will continue its massive impact on the central Kansas economy, its investment of $600 million dollars will fuel 225 jobs," Kelly said. "It is a great day for Salina and a great day for the entire state. I'm grateful to everyone who made this moment possible." 

Kelly continued, "For back-to-back years, Kansas has attracted the most new capital investments in our state's history. Since the start of my administration, economic development projects have created and retained over 53,000 jobs, and have attracted over $14.7 billion of investment into the Kansas economy. As a result, we've won the coveted Gold Shovel Award for the last two years. And in 2021, the Governor's Cup for the most business investment per capita in the country - we are number one."

UPDATE 12:05 p.m. Thursday: A second earthquake shook far eastern Marion County on Wednesday.

The 2.3 magnitude quake struck at 10:18 p.m. near the Marion County-Chase County line, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered just north of 220th Street between the county line and Clover Road.

MARION - A small earthquake rattled part of eastern Marion County Wednesday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake struck northeast of Marion at 10:21 a.m. Wednesday. It was centered just east of Bluestem Road at 230th Road.

Celebrating its 17th year, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame has announced the names of three prominent Salina businesspersons who are to be inducted into the 2022 class on Nov. 10.

This year's inductees include Mabel Shelton (Historic Category 1926-1975), Mel Jarvis (Historic Category 1926-1975), and Larry Triplett (Contemporary Category 1976-present).

Additionally a new award - the Spirit of Salina Award - is to be presented to an emerging entrepreneur in the community. 

"The awardee selected represents the "best of the best" in terms of overcoming obstacles, believing in their dreams, taking risks, and persisting as a small business owner. They embody a spirit - the entrepreneurial spirit of Salina - and those that have come before. This awardee will be named during the Business Hall of Fame induction ceremony," according to information from the Salina Business Hall of Fame taskforce.

This year's induction ceremony is scheduled for noon-1:30 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Salina Country Club. Kansas State University President Richard Linton is scheduled to be the featured speaker.

This year's Salina Business Hall of Fame induction set for Nov. 10

Police are looking for a pickup stolen from a landscaping business in west-central Salina on Halloween.

The 2000 Ford Ranger was believed to have been stolen from Fox Lawn and Landscaping, 1001 Franklin Street on Monday afternoon. An officer saw a man driving the pickup later in the day in the 1000 block of E. Elm Street, however, the owner hadn't yet reported the pickup stolen, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The pickup was reported stolen on Wednesday morning.

The pickup was white with black wheels and had a Kansas license plate of 761RBY. It also had a blue shifter knob. The Ranger was valued at $2,500.

Forrester said the owner was unsure whether the keys were in the pickup, however, the keys are missing.

A trick-or-treating teen was reportedly attacked by a person wearing a teddy bear onesie in east Salina Halloween night.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 17-year-old girl was trick-or-treating with her two-week-old child, boyfriend, and some other people at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of Argonne Drive. 

The teen fell behind the others as she was not feeling well, Forrester said. At that point, an unknown person began striking her in the head, she reported. Her boyfriend looked back and saw a 5'-4" white female with brown hair and wearing a teddy bear onesie striking the teen, Forrester said.

The teen received minor injuries and was taken to Salina Regional Health Center.

Forrester said police are looking for surveillance video from the area.

NWS: Storm chances tonight for part of area; rain on the way

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of October. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. A total donation of $715 was presented to the Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots organization. 

The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

Memorial Hospital is also an Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots drop off location for new toys, games, books, and monetary donations through Dec. 5.

Future tenants and Salina Presbyterian Manor's leadership team broke ground Tuesday morning as construction officially began on a $15 million housing project at the Manor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We had a need from our current waiting list to expand our villas—the single family residences," said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors of Mid America (PMMA). "We've been working on it but COVID slowed us down a little bit. We started up our marketing and we have a&nbsp; first phase of 22 units, of which 11 are already reserved."&nbsp;

The Villas will be built just&nbsp;east of Ralph Reitz Memorial Park. Construction of the first 22 units, making up Phase One, has begun, though seven additional units are planned according to information from Salina Presbyterian Manor. The first villa ready for occupancy will be in the fall of 2023.&nbsp; The Villas will be the only single-detached homes at the 35-acre campus, located near the existing pond, with several walking paths and a new pickleball court.

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Eric Brown&nbsp; attended the groundbreaking and spoke about the importance of identifying&nbsp; pain points in the community and the economic impact The Villas project will have.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The thing we always talk about at the chamber is the big picture. What does Salina need – what are&nbsp;our pain points, and housing is a pain point,"&nbsp;Brown said. "We need housing at all levels, and that includes the retirement community. Believe it or not, our number one economic driver in Saline County is retirees. It's almost $500 million more than the second driver which is healthcare. Salina has become known as a great place to retire."&nbsp;

Collaborating with Presbyterian Manors of Mid America on this Salina Presbyterian Manor project are the following companies: Developer - Greystone Communities, Irving, Texas; Architect - AG Architecture, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; Interior Design – RDG Planning &amp; Design, St. Louis Office, and General Constructor – Simpson Construction Services, Wichita, Kansas

South winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

NWS issues wind advisories for some counties in the area

Police are investigating the theft of multiple of tools from a south Salina business earlier in the week.

Sometime between 3 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday, someone broke into a building at Bergkamp, Inc., 3040 Emulsion Drive, and stole nearly $9,000 worth of tools and a 55-gallon trash can, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

When employees arrived at the facility, they noticed that the south entrance on the west building had been pried open. A special locking mechanism on the entrance was bent, allowing access to the building.

Once inside, the thief or thieves accessed several places in the building and stole numerous tools belonging to Bergkamp and its employees, Forrester said. Stolen tools included the following.

Additionally, a 55-gallon restroom trashcan was stolen. Forrester said it is believed that the trashcan was used to haul the tools from the building.

Total loss was estimated at just under $9,000, he said. Damage to the door was estimated at $2,000.

Forrester said police were reviewing surveillance video from the area.

By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostPolice are investigating the theft of multiple of tools from a south Salina business earlier in the week.Sometime between 3 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday, someone broke into a building at Bergkamp, Inc., 3040 Emulsion Drive, and stole nearly $9,000 worth of tools and a 55-gallon trash can, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.When employees arrived at the facility, they noticed that the south entrance on the west building had been pried open. A special locking mechanism on the entrance was bent, allowing access to the building.Once inside, the thief or thieves accessed several places in the building and stole numerous tools belonging to Bergkamp and its employees, Forrester said. Stolen tools included the following.●A number of Snap-On tools●Several DeWalt power tools●Some Matco toolsAdditionally, a 55-gallon restroom trashcan was stolen. Forrester said it is believed that the trashcan was used to haul the tools from the building.Total loss was estimated at just under $9,000, he said. Damage to the door was estimated at $2,000.Forrester said police were reviewing surveillance video from the area.

Salina's Dunbar School focus of museum presentation Thursday

For her excellence in teaching and research at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>, Siny Joseph is the 2022 recipient of the Rex McArthur Family Faculty Fellow Award.

The annual honor recognizes a K-State Salina professor who achieves excellence in teaching, research and commitment to the college, university and community. Joseph, a professor and graduate faculty member at K-State Salina, teaches principles of micro- and macroeconomics courses on the campus. She has been honored previously for her teaching with the 2018 Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence. "I am humbled by the recognition and express gratitude to the Rex McArthur family and selection committee for this honor," Joseph said. "This award is special to me as it recognizes multiple dimensions, such as teaching, research and service and holistically looks at a faculty member's contribution to the college and university." Joseph has a long list of accomplishments in her time with K-State Salina. Besides teaching classes at the campus, she has published several pieces of scholarly work, including collaborating with other K-State faculty members to publish the textbook "Space Systems: Emerging Technologies and Operations" in 2022. She also has&nbsp;collaborated on proposals funded totaling around $2 million, serves as a consultant for various projects funded by federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Agriculture,&nbsp;and has appeared in local radio and television shows discussing various economics-related topics.

"As a professor, you normally have a front-facing end where I teach and get involved with students in class," Joseph said. "On the back end are my research efforts where I'm working toward creatively furthering my scholarship endeavors. Pursuit of cutting-edge research prepares me to be a better teacher in the classroom." Providing real-world experiences for students is an everyday facet of the education model at K-State Salina, and the knowledge that professors like Joseph share with their students is an example of the type of education a student will receive while on campus. "The efforts of Siny's research have made an incredible impact in the classroom," K-State Salina CEO and Dean Alysia Starkey said. "Our students are gaining real-world insights from an instructor who has spent tireless hours devoting to the field to stay up to date and ready our students to lead tomorrow." Joseph has been a faculty member with K-State Salina since 2012. She earned a&nbsp;bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a Master of Business Administration, specializing in marketing and operations research, from institutions in India, and a master's and a doctorate in resource economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.&nbsp;

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher We are in the heart of what has been termed the “silly season of politics.” I know that for many of us voter fatigue has set in, and I have good news and bad news on that front. The good news is that in about a week or less it will all be over. The bad news is that the next cycle is a presidential election, so you have about six months before that gets cranked up. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of campaign ads and fliers turns many of us off or makes us numb to the candidates. I get that but you must fight through the urge to ignore all of it and tune it out. This is one of the most critical elections that we as an ag community have faced and this is a call for all hands on deck. It is true that all votes count but when it comes to agriculture that statement has never been truer. Candidates who support agriculture need your vote. Kansas is becoming increasingly urban and because of that voters in those areas are farther and farther away from agriculture. We are a democracy where the majority rules. Soon we could find ourselves having less of a voice over who represents us and, more importantly, what legislation gets passed. We know laws made in Topeka and Washington D.C. can have huge impacts on how we run our farms and ranches. It is important that we elect representatives that will have our best interests in mind and who understand our business. That is why the work Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends does is so important. They take the opinions from the grassroots level and develop a list of candidates who are friendly to agriculture and will keep our best interests in mind. That work is not done in a couple of days but rather in a painstaking process, making sure that all voices are heard. However, that great work doesn’t mean anything if we don’t get out and vote for those candidates. While I would like you to vote for the people on that list, and I ask that you take the time to look at it, I just want you to exercise your right to vote. Historically those of us in rural areas have gotten out at higher levels than our urban counterparts, and that amplifies our voice. Lately, that has not been the case and is a trend we need to reverse. If you are really tired of the noise around the election, go vote now. Advanced voting is open, check with your county clerk to find out how. Then it is done and no matter what happens, your voice is heard. If you are like me and a traditionalist, make sure you get out and vote on Nov. 8. Every vote counts and every vote matters. We have seen it time and time again, even right here in Kansas. Please, look at the list of VOTE FBF endorsed candidates before you make your decision. I cannot stress just how important your vote is. It’s our chance to be a voice for Kansas.
