Salina's Stiefel Theatre has received a nomination from the Academy of Country Music!

In a release made public Thursday, the Academy of Country Music announced that the Stiefel Theatre was one of five venues nominated in the Theatre of the Year category. Other venues competing in the category include the following.

● Crystal Grand Music Theatre – Wisconsin Dells, Wis.

● Florida Theatre – Jacksonville, Fla

K-State's Coach Jerome Tang scheduled to visit Salina

DICKINSON COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp; The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Herington man on Wednesday for allegedly intimidating a witness in a felony investigation, according to a media release from the KBI.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Russell L. Thomas, 61, of Herington, was arrested on a warrant for aggravated intimidation of a witness. This crime is alleged to have occurred on April 7. Thomas is a middle school science teacher at Herington USD 487, according to the district web site.

Thomas was booked into the Dickinson County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000.&nbsp; He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

All day on that Tuesday, half of the revenue from five special fundraiser menu items at Applebee’s in 13 communities, will be donated to send World War II, Korea, and Vietnam veterans to Washington, D.C. for free.

A regional theatre festival is coming to Salina later this month.

Theatre Salina will host the Region V competition of the American Association of Community Theatre Festival (AACT Fest). Six regional theatres will compete April 20-23 for the privilege to represent their region at the AACT Fest National Conference in June in Louisville, Ky. Theatre Salina has been to national twice: in 2001 in Harrisburg, Pa., with its production of Wit and in 2019 in Gettysburg, Pa., with Silent Sky.

Region V is comprised of theatres from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. 

At the competition in Salina, the following theatres will present their best: The FungusAmongus Players of Dassel, Minn., will present The End of the Beginning; the County Seat Theater Company of Cloquet, Minn., will do Tracks; the Carousel Theatre of Indianola, Iowa, will do Code Five; the Arkeny Community Theatre of Arkeny, Iowa, will do The Children; the Aberdeen Community Theatre of Aberdeen, S.D., will do Didn’t See That Coming; and Theatre Atchison of Atchison, Kan., will do The Wall.&nbsp;

After each performance, each group will be adjudicated by three seasoned veterans of theatre. The adjudicators for Region V are Morrie Enders executive director of Lincoln (Neb.) Community Playhouse, Kristy Meanor, executive director of the Wetumpka Depot Players, (Ala.), and John Viars, director emeritus of Des Moines Playhouse. &nbsp;

Each theatre has 10 minutes to assemble its set, 60 minutes to perform, and 10 minutes to “strike” its set. These rules were created to allow theatres of all sizes to compete on an equal basis.&nbsp;

The festival will also include a series of workshops of a wide range of topics of interest to theatres. Marco Benitez, director of marketing and communication with Music Theatre of Wichita will present Marketing for Success: The Use of Digital Marketing. Elizabeth-Ali Schade will do Intimacy Coaching exploring this new component of direction in theatre, film, and television. Joshua Morris will present his workshop on creating and building scenic projections. Morrie Enders will give tips of directing musical in community theatre. Maggie Spicer Brown will teach how to create dance and choreography for the non-dancer.&nbsp;

“We are truly excited to host this festival again. We did this event in 2011 just before the Theatre Education Wing was completed. Now that we have the full facility, this should be a more resonant event,” said Theatre Salina Executive Director Michael Spicer. “We are endeavoring to bring theatres from all over the state together on a regular basis to share, learn, and network. We look forward to that kind of participation again.”&nbsp;

On April 23, there will be an awards brunch at the Homewood Suites, which is also serving as the main host hotel for AACT Fest Region V.

Theatre Salina to host regional festival later this month; tickets available

The daughter of a country music legend and an artist in her own right is coming to Salina in June.

Pam Tillis is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. June 24 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

She’s the daughter of Country Music legend Mel Tillis and multi-media artist Doris Tillis. A singer/songwriter whose compositions have been covered in Country, R&amp;B, Bluegrass and Rock. An actor with a long list of film, TV and stage credits. Pam Tillis sidestepped any notions of nepotism and other “isms” that women in show business often face and carved out her own unique space as an entertainer. 

Tillis’ 1991 debut country album, Put Yourself In My Place, went gold and yielded two No. 1 and two Top 5 singles. Her next three albums – Homeward Looking Angel, Sweetheart’s Dance and Greatest Hits, were all certified platinum. She achieved six No. 1 songs during the ‘90s Country explosion, including “Shake the Sugar Tree,” “Mi Vida Loca,” “When You Walk In The Room,” “In Between Dances,” “Don’t Tell Me What To Do,” and her signature song, “Maybe It Was Memphis.” 

“It’s a hard thing to put your finger on,” she says, describing the enduring appeal of “Memphis.” “It’s a great melody and a cinematic lyric. It’s romantic, but it rocks. And it’s a great vocal vehicle.” Not only did Country fans agree, so have several aspiring artists. Contestants on both American Idol and The Voice have used the song to showcase their talents. 

“In many ways this part of my career is more fun because it feels like the pressure’s off,” says the CMA Female Vocalist Winner. “I feel much more relaxed and I can just enjoy the journey a little bit more.” 

Tillis is currently finding a lot of satisfaction mentoring young performers and artists, including those in her all-female acoustic trio, The Rose Rustlers (Haley Sullivan and Carson McKee). “I love mentoring,” she says. “I find myself working with so many Millennial musicians now. They’re accomplished players; none of them need help in the talent department. I’m just trying to pass on some of the things I’ve learned from 30 years of touring and how to navigate a very tough industry.” 

As Tillis stops to count her blessings, she reflects on the bonds she’s made from teaming up with some other female veterans of Country Music, including her fellow ‘90s chart toppers Lorrie Morgan, Suzy Bogguss and Terri Clark. Morgan and Tillis have recorded and toured together as “Grits and Glamour,” and Bogguss and Clark frequently tour with Tillis under the banner “Chicks With Hits,” swapping songs and stories, as only legends-in-the-making can. “I’ve made lifelong friends from these tours,” she says. “It’s the kind of camaraderie I couldn’t find when I was the only gal on the bill with a bunch of male artists.” 

The Grammy winner and Grand Ole Opry member’s talents extend far beyond her recording career – she’s an accomplished actor with an impressive list of credits, including the films The Thing Called Love and The Neon Highway; the Broadway production of Smokey Joe’s Café; and TV shows LA Law, Diagnosis: Murder, Promised Land, Drag Race, Nashville, and Fairwood. “I definitely thrive on variety,” says Tillis, who’s even stepped behind the camera to direct half a dozen music videos. 

Tillis’ latest album, 2020’s Looking For A Feeling, finds her doubling down on one of her first loves – songwriting. She wrote seven of the 11 tracks. Some of her most formative musical years were in the late ‘70s – and the album reflects that ‘70s Country Rock flavor. The many threads of her influences were loosely woven together by hit Country writer/producer Jimmy Ritchey (Mark Chesnutt, Jake Owen) on some tunes and Nashville rocker/producer Joe Pisapia (k.d. lang, Guster) on others. 

The music muse is still providing inspiration and accolades. Tillis is one of the 2022 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees. “It’s a huge honor,” she said. “My dad is in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He would be so proud.”

Pam Tillis sidestepped any notions of nepotism and other “isms” that women in show business often face and carved out her own unique space as an entertainer. Tillis’ 1991 debut country album, Put Yourself In My Place, went gold and yielded two No. 1 and two Top 5 singles. Her next three albums – Homeward Looking Angel, Sweetheart’s Dance and Greatest Hits, were all certified platinum. She achieved six No. 1 songs during the ‘90s Country explosion, including “Shake the Sugar Tree,” “Mi Vida Loca,” “When You Walk In The Room,” “In Between Dances,” “Don’t Tell Me What To Do,” and her signature song, “Maybe It Was Memphis.” “It’s a hard thing to put your finger on,” she says, describing the enduring appeal of “Memphis.” “It’s a great melody and a cinematic lyric. It’s romantic, but it rocks. And it’s a great vocal vehicle.” Not only did Country fans agree, so have several aspiring artists. Contestants on both American Idol and The Voice have used the song to showcase their talents. “In many ways this part of my career is more fun because it feels like the pressure’s off,” says the CMA Female Vocalist Winner. “I feel much more relaxed and I can just enjoy the journey a little bit more.” Tillis is currently finding a lot of satisfaction mentoring young performers and artists, including those in her all-female acoustic trio, The Rose Rustlers (Haley Sullivan and Carson McKee). “I love mentoring,” she says. “I find myself working with so many Millennial musicians now. They’re accomplished players; none of them need help in the talent department. I’m just trying to pass on some of the things I’ve learned from 30 years of touring and how to navigate a very tough industry.” As Tillis stops to count her blessings, she reflects on the bonds she’s made from teaming up with some other female veterans of Country Music, including her fellow ‘90s chart toppers Lorrie Morgan, Suzy Bogguss and Terri Clark. Morgan and Tillis have recorded and toured together as “Grits and Glamour,” and Bogguss and Clark frequently tour with Tillis under the banner “Chicks With Hits,” swapping songs and stories, as only legends-in-the-making can. “I’ve made lifelong friends from these tours,” she says. “It’s the kind of camaraderie I couldn’t find when I was the only gal on the bill with a bunch of male artists.” The Grammy winner and Grand Ole Opry member’s talents extend far beyond her recording career – she’s an accomplished actor with an impressive list of credits, including the films The Thing Called Love and The Neon Highway; the Broadway production of Smokey Joe’s Café; and TV shows LA Law, Diagnosis: Murder, Promised Land, Drag Race, Nashville, and Fairwood. “I definitely thrive on variety,” says Tillis, who’s even stepped behind the camera to direct half a dozen music videos. Tillis’ latest album, 2020’s Looking For A Feeling, finds her doubling down on one of her first loves – songwriting. She wrote seven of the 11 tracks. Some of her most formative musical years were in the late ‘70s – and the album reflects that ‘70s Country Rock flavor. The many threads of her influences were loosely woven together by hit Country writer/producer Jimmy Ritchey (Mark Chesnutt, Jake Owen) on some tunes and Nashville rocker/producer Joe Pisapia (k.d. lang, Guster) on others. The music muse is still providing inspiration and accolades. Tillis is one of the 2022 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees. “It’s a huge honor,” she said. “My dad is in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Over the last month, the Kansas legislature pushed through anti-trans woman bills HB180 and HB2238. HB180 establishes a&nbsp;“women's bill of rights to provide a meaning of biological sex for purposes of statutory construction.” In other words, the committee outlines terminology to establish a definition of sex in order to address legal discrimination against those assigned female at birth. The second legislation, HB2238, operates to “create fairness in women’s sports” by excluding women assigned male at birth.&nbsp;

Both bills purport to configure parameters for protecting women’s rights. However, the design is less a protection for women, and more an attempt to deny recognition of trans women. &nbsp;

Women assigned female at birth face particular forms of discrimination different from trans women. Similarly, black women assigned female at birth face unique forms of discrimination based on racial and gender dynamics that distinguishes their experiences from white women assigned female. Thus, women’s intersectional identities can impact the methods and forms of discrimination they face based on class, race, age, and original gender identification. However, the Kansas legislature has not embraced the complexity of women or the myriad of discriminations that impact them. &nbsp;

For example, the legislature has an opportunity to pass a bill addressing domestic violence. Domestic violence homicides are a trend that continues to run high in Kansas, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. District Judge and former Republican state senator Phil Journey’s exposure to these violent cases in his court prompted him to develop legislative reform bills to curve domestic violence. These bills, however, have not flown through the legislature like HB180 and HB2238. Journey noted in the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/06/sedgwick-county-judge-offers-kansas-legislators-package-of-bills-to-stem-domestic-violence/" target="_blank">Kansas Reflector</a>&nbsp;that,&nbsp;“convincing the minimum 63 of 125 representatives, 21 of 40 senators and Gov. Laura Kelly to transform a piece of legislation into law wasn’t easy.”&nbsp;

Ironically, the current state statistics ignores how trans women also experience domestic violence. As&nbsp;<a href="https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/" target="_blank">UCLA School of Law</a>&nbsp;confirmed,&nbsp;“Transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender [those whose gender identity aligns to the gender assigned at birth] experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault, according to a new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.” &nbsp;

These contradictions about who needs protection lie at the heart of both bills. Neither legislation addresses the violence&nbsp;all&nbsp;women (Trans and assigned female at birth) face, nor provides the real protection that all women need. The result is not new laws which protect women, but legislation that denies trans identity and civil rights by posing “women’s” rights as oppositional.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Indeed, this strategy of contradictory rights is a regular tool in conservative politics. The tactic has its roots in the latter 1960s when southern conservatives attempted to avoid school desegregation by claiming private Christian schools were a religious right. In its current form, these “counter rights” arguments have taken shape to turn back the clock on women’s reproductive rights, avoid teaching black history, and deny queer rights. &nbsp;

Kansans need genuine discussions about the needs of all women, no matter their birth assignment, race, age, or class. Many individuals are suffering from abusive violence, and our elected officials have the capacity to protect all Kansan women. The first step is to drop the pretense, and support actual protections for all women.&nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS: What does it mean to protect women?

The City of Abilene, through partnership with ZenCity, has launched a new digital community engagement platform to inform and engage residents about upcoming projects, plans and initiatives. 

Through Zencity, the city will create engagement pages for local projects to provide necessary and important information and invite residents to participate in surveys directly related to the projects. The goal is for the city to better incorporate more resident feedback in the planning and execution of priority initiatives to improve local services and the overall quality of life.&nbsp;

Zencity is a community input platform that works with hundreds of municipalities across the U.S., including Chicago, Phoenix, Seattle and San Diego. This initiative is a way for the residents of Abilene to stay informed as well as to provide meaningful insights and proactive feedback to the city before, during and after projects. It will allow residents to access information in their own time, from wherever is convenient. &nbsp;

The first project featured is the Lead Service Line Inventory (LSLI) required by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Residents can easily access the project page from the Community Engagement section of the city’s website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.abilenecityhall.com/" target="_blank">www.abilenecityhall.com</a>. &nbsp; This is where residents are able to access the information, get helpful tips on completing their survey, and view a video to guide with the identification of their plumbing pipes. Residents received their survey forms in late March and are encouraged to contact City Hall with any questions.&nbsp;

The city will soon launch project pages for the 14th&nbsp;Street Reconstruction project, the Comprehensive Plan updates, and the Sports Complex/Feasibility Study providing project timelines and updates. Citizens can sign up for notifications about a specific project or all projects to ensure they never miss an update! &nbsp;

Responding to a stinging new memoir from former FBI Director James Comey, Trump laced into Comey, describing him as an "untruthful slime ball."

One year ago: Frank James, a 62-year-old man accused of shooting and wounding 10 people on a Brooklyn subway train was arrested about 30 hours later and charged with a federal terrorism offense after calling police to come get him. (James would plead guilty months later.) Entries in 18 categories of prose and poetry are accepted April 1 to June 15 with cash prizes presented at the club’s writing retreat on Oct. 8. Winners who cannot attend the awards ceremony will receive awards by mail after the event. All residents of the state of Kansas are welcome to enter, and those who are members get discounted entry fees. Members of the club may reside anywhere in Kansas and beyond.

“A Moment to Write” is the topic for the 2023 theme contest. In prose, theme entries can be fiction or nonfiction, with a limit of 1,500 words, any genre. In poetry, the theme entries can be of any poetic form. Any fire weather watches for area counties have been canceled.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from 1-8 p.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast.

Winds from the south at 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and relative humidity as low as 25 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Red flag warnings issued for our area on Thursday

The 58th Annual Mid America Farm Expo is in the books.&nbsp; Every year, people from all corners of the Midwest come to Salina to learn about, celebrate and showcase the latest advancements in agriculture.

This year's event, was no exception. According to the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, more than 4,000 visitors made their way through the more than 250 exhibits that were on display representing approximately 275 ag-centered companies from around the United States.

With so much buzz around the event, we can't help but wonder what made it such a success?

58th Annual Mid America Farm Expo - an overview

The 58th Mid America Farm Expo was held from March 22 to March 24, at the Tony's Pizza Event Center, 800 The Midway, in Salina.&nbsp;

Each day of the event was packed with informative seminars talking about agriculture market outlooks, the importance of succession planning and the state of carbon programs.&nbsp;

 The expo was organized by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Steering Committee in partnership with K-State Research and Extension.

According to the chamber, the expo began 58 years ago as an Agriculture Committee of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce project. It was named the Salina Materials Handling Show and had 44 exhibits on display on the Saline County Fairgrounds, now called the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center.

One of the highlights of the expo was keynote speaker, Shannon Ferrell, agriculture economics professor at Oklahoma State University. Ferrell delivered a humorous, engaging and&nbsp; informative lecture on the importance of&nbsp; farmers and ag producers to be prepared and get started on succession planning.

● How to go about selecting legal guardianship ● Rural mental health and how to manage farm stress ● Establishing powers of attorney for business and healthcare ● How and why it is important to create a will ● Understanding trusts, whether they are the best financial tool for you ● Prenuptial agreements ● Family dynamics and how they play a role in succession planning

"At the end of the day, I gave a workshop for 200 people in Illinois, and I asked principal operators, their spouses, their successors and their successors spouses, 'What is the most important thing to you in the process of succession planning?' They unanimously said- keep the family relationships intact. That is what is most important," Ferrell said.

Ferrell said as families navigate the process of succession planning, nine times out of ten, they are shocked to learn how much they have in common with their family members.&nbsp;

"I hope your farms succeed and prosper for generations to come, but more importantly, I want your families to prosper, and if you can take the bull&nbsp; by the horns and really confront these issues in a positive, open, honest way, you can not just have farm success but you can have family success as well," Ferrell said. "For farmers and ranchers, we love to see stuff grow. So my wish for you is that in this process, you can see what you have sown, and reap that harvest and watch them prosper."

Carbon credits: concrete ways to monetize

Carbon credits refer to a tradable permit or certificate that offsets the emission of one ton of carbon dioxide or another greenhouse gas by the credit holder. Large corporations – like McDonalds and Microsoft – have recently announced voluntary efforts to reduce carbon emissions by contributing to a carbon credit market.

Micah Cameron-Harp is a doctoral graduate from the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University, where he currently works as a post-doctoral fellow.&nbsp;

Cameron-Harp's current work was the subject of his presentation at the farm expo. His post-doctoral fellowship focuses on voluntary markets for agricultural carbon offsets. 

Since the carbon credit market is relatively new and there is limited data on participation, Cameron-Harper uses a spatial micro-simulation approach, which considers how things change over space rather than just between individuals, groups or periods of time, in an effort to determine their efficiency in terms of voluntary agricultural carbon offset programs.

On March 22, more than 400 people attended the Banker's Luncheon, sponsored by local banking institutions, Bennington State Bank, Equity Bank, First Bank Kansas, Bank of Tescott, Central National Bank and Solomon State Bank.&nbsp;

Salina-based Land Pride is a company that is proud of its Midwestern roots. Land Pride, a Division of Great Plains Mfg., Inc., has been a leader in grounds maintenance equipment since its inception in 1986. 

The company is a leader in tractor-mounted implements and Kubota-branded construction attachments that include rotary tillers, grooming mowers, seeders, rotary cutters, rear blades, snow blowers, grapples, buckets, concrete claws, hopper brooms, hydraulic breakers, and more.&nbsp;

Mark Johnson, territory manager for Land Pride, said that since the pandemic, more people are spending time at home and saving money from travel, causing an increase in sales.&nbsp;

"People are spending more time at home with family, and doing home improvement projects, which require implements and tractors that we sell at Land Pride," Johnson said.&nbsp;

In the same way the circumstances surrounding the pandemic caused more people to invest in property maintenance, it also complicated supply chains that were responsible for carrying crucial mechanical components to Salina.&nbsp;

"Hiring and expansion within our companies matched with supply and demand we had a lot of the components in manufacturing that were running short," Johnson said. "Like you have heard all over the world, sitting in a container just off the coast."

Luckily, Land Pride has leveraged its community support and has outsourced a portion of its manufacturing to local welders.

"We've been in contact with and are working with just about every local weld shop within 50 miles of Salina," said Land Pride employee Jeremy Howze.

The chamber said it takes volunteers with "impressive attributes" in order to showcase the very best hospitality and willingness to help make expo attendees' time enjoyable and worth their stop.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stephanie Gillig, events and community initiatives director for the chamber, said exhibitors told her the main reason they come back year after year is because of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the volunteers, especially those who help unload and load equipment.

"I want to say a huge thank you to the chamber Agriculture steering committee and all of our fabulous volunteers, and Carl Garten," Gillig said "Carl single handedly knows the layout, and recognizes the exhibitors needs before they know what they need. He knows the attendees that come through the door and his sense of humor and dedication to the expo is top notch."&nbsp;

Gillig also said multiple vendors told her following the expo that this what their best year yet, saying they had great conversations with prospective buyers.&nbsp;

"Long McArthur said, it was one of the best years they've ever had. They sold three vehicles from just at the farm show," Gillig said.

Cade Rensink, Kansas State Research and Extension Central Kansas District director and organizer behind the expo's presenters, said farm shows like the Mid America Farm Expo are not as common as they were 25 years ago.&nbsp;

"There's always this speculation about how relevant our farm shows anymore? And how likely is it that people just won't come some year? Obviously, online marketing, and those types of things have have been a challenge for us," Rensink said. "But I think one of the things that makes us unique in the farm show world is that we're pretty much 100% volunteer driven, it's local. We don't have an outside promoter that organizes it and puts it on for us." Rensink said a vast majority of farm shows that occur, are done by large promoter, often times out of state.&nbsp;

"We've all got a vested interest in it from a local standpoint, because it's a product of Salina for Salina and central Kansas and that's what really sets us apart from virtually every other show that's out there. I can't speak for all of them in Kansas, but I know several of them fairly well, and they're all put on by a third party and we're, our own," Rensink said.&nbsp;

Gillig said with this being her first time helping organize the Farm Expo, having Rensink's expertise and knowledge of trending agricultural topics helped craft an engaging and informative discussion following each of the presentations.

The arena, lobby and Great Plains Manufacturing Exhibition Hall, plus Ag Hall and parking lot were all full of exhibitors showcasing products from more than 275 ag-centered companies from around the United States.
