The Salina VFW Post 1432 and the Salina America Legion Post 62 are once again teaming up for this year's fireworks stand.&nbsp; The booth will be open from June 27th to July 5th.&nbsp; The stand is located five miles north of 170 on Old Highway 81, Morton building on the east side of the road.&nbsp;

Veterans, law enforcement, and first responders receive 10 percent off! 

Proceeds will help fund both groups as they continue to improve the lives of veterans and their families.&nbsp;

The stand is also looking for volunteers. If you are able and willing to work a shift or two to help out, email VFW1432@salinas.kscoxmail.com for more information and to get out on our volunteer sheet.

Saline County Booking Activity, June 6

Kansas Wesleyan University recently announced the sponsorship of a community program run by another Salina-area pillar, Rolling Hills Zoo. KWU’s sponsorship of the Zoo’s Zoo Teen program began in May.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Supporting our community is an important part of what it means to be a Coyote,” said Brad Salois, director of marketing and communications. “Few organizations in our area are more dedicated to community education — for all ages — than Rolling Hills Zoo. We believe that makes us great partners, and we’re excited to deepen our partnership in this fashion.”

The Zoo Teen program will include some 20 area teenagers who will host educational stations throughout Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) during the summer months. The group will also participate in conservation programs, assist with summer camps and special projects throughout the zoo, and raise funds to support wildlife conservation.

“The Zoo Teen program provides a great opportunity for our teen ambassadors to educate, inspire and promote wildlife conservation while honing their public interaction and presentation skills.&nbsp;This program not only equips them with important life skills but also introduces them to the value of giving back to their community,” shared Linda Henderson, RHZ director of development and marketing.&nbsp; “These are the same qualities Kansas Wesleyan instills in their students, and for that reason we are thrilled to have Kansas Wesleyan University as our&nbsp;Zoo Teen program sponsor.”&nbsp;

KWU has sponsored several events at the Zoo during the past two years, including last year’s Run for the Hills 5K, and currently sponsors an animal at the facility, as well.

Saline County Relay for Life releases schedule for June 17

A Salina icon is closing its doors for the final time in mid-June.

On Monday, Tracy and Peggy Hawk announced on Facebook that Maggie Mae's Bar &amp; Grill would close permanently on June 14.

Maggie Mae's has had a long history on the corner of S. Broadway Boulevard and W. South Street.

"My family, my grandfather and father, took over the building in 1981," Tracy said. 

Prior to that, the bar had been Daisy Mae's, which had a reputation of being a biker bar. Tracy said his father, Mike, had wanted the bar to be a country bar, so he renamed it Bar X. However, he couldn't keep the bikers out and he couldn't get enough country music lovers to frequent the bar.

In 1991, Mike closed Bar X, formed a corporation Maggie Mae's, Inc., and opened Maggie Mae's Bar &amp; Grill. 

Contrary to what some people believed, changing the name of the bar to Maggie Mae's was not connected to Rod Stewart's 1971 hit Maggie May. Rather, the bar was partially named in honor of Mike's quarter horse, "Maggie," and as a tribute to the bar's former self, Daisy Mae's, Tracy said.

Tracy has been a part of the Maggie Mae's operation since his father died in 2002. Since then, he has seen a lot.

"I've had a very sizeable education," he said.

For Tracy, Maggie Mae's is a reminder of his family.

"Whenever I get to that building, period, walking inside, I think about my dad. I think about him. I think about my grandfather," he said.

Tracy also credits Maggie Mae's for his wife, Peggy.

"Although I did know Peggy before, a little, we definitely got reacquainted and we wound up getting together and getting married," Tracy said.

"So one of the fond things he remembers is meeting his wife," Peggy quipped.

Tracy also told of a conversation he recently had with his son about Maggie Mae's closing. 

The conversation was revealing in that Tracy's son told his father that he got his work ethic from all the times Tracy had to go in and help cook because Maggie Mae's was so busy. While Tracy was cooking, his son stayed in the office because he was too young to be out in the bar area.

"He said, 'That's where I get my work ethic. I go to work and it's not an inconvenience. It's a joy.' He said, 'I understand what you did allowed us to do other things. It allowed us to go on vacations and to be able to buy things and do things. But we never worried whether there was a roof over our head and those kind of things,'" Tracy said.

"He said, 'I understand now, watching you doing what you did, I understand,'" Tracy continued. "And needless to say, that's a big one for one of the things that absolutely fulfills my life." 

Whether it has been customers, employees, or those they have helped, the Hawks have touched a lot of lives over the years, and they have welcomed people from all walks of life to Maggie Mae's.

"I've had some really exceptional people work for me over the years. People that have left an impression on me for the rest of my life," Tracy said.

He continued, "We, collectively, have done some incredible things. Some of my customers, I'm going to say 95 percent of my customers, are fantastic people. Unfortunately, there's always a bad apple in the bunch, but with those good people that a lot of society looks down on, we collectively raised over half a million dollars."

The funds were raised over 16-17 years and were given to several local charities.

"Sixteen to 17 years, raising over half a million dollars is huge," Tracy said. "And I think about it and it's like, wait a minute, yes, I did a lot of things, but I can only create the monster. It took everybody else. It took my staff. It took volunteers. It took the customers. It took everybody to be able to put all of that together. And we really did have a good time."

The Hawks also talked about increasing the respectibility of Maggie Mae's, which years ago had a reputation for fights and, in some cases, drug sales.

"I'm not going to say that there isn't still some bad element, but, for the most part, most all of that is gone," Tracy said.

"It took a lot of work. We had to kick people out. We never called the police though, unless it got really bad. The bartenders and the cooks, we all handled it," Peggy explained. "We're like, we're not going to have that in here. You're out 30 days. The next time, if it was the same person, you're out 60 days. I think there's a handful of people that are out for life because of being repeat offenders. We started enforcing it and word got out."

She continued, "Women will come in. They feel comfortable sitting there because if a guy starts bothering them, we're like 'Hey! Move on. They're not interested. Leave them alone. They're here to have a drink just like anybody else.' It's just a nice, safe, comfortable place to go eat and drink and have a good time."

So once Maggie Mae's closes June 14, what's next for the Hawks?

"We're just going to be average people that don't own a bar any more. He's going to work full time for FedEx and I'm going to continue to drive a CityGo bus, and when we have vacation time, we're going to travel," Peggy said.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY —One. person was injured in an accident just after 1p.m. Monday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy SUV driven by Marta F.&nbsp;Bravo-Rodriguez, 45, Tulsa, Oklahoma, was&nbsp;westbound on Interstate 70 just west of the Kansas 14 Junction.

The driver lost control of the SUV when the rear passenger side tire blew out.&nbsp;The SUV&nbsp; rolled over into the north ditch.&nbsp; The Chevy struck a&nbsp; 2001 Isuzu SUV driven by Blaine J. Archer, 52, Dickson, Tennessee in the process, causing minor damage.

EMS transported Bravo-Rodriguez to the hospital in Ellsworth. Dickson and three passengers in the Chevy were not injured. All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Saint Francis Ministries is delighted to welcome Reverend Andrew T. O'Connor as our new Executive Officer for Mission &amp; Ministry. In his capacity, Fr. O'Connor will offer pastoral care to our staff and clients, cultivate strong relationships within the communities we serve, and collaborate with various faith groups.

Fr. O’Connor comes to Saint Francis from Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kansas, where he served as rector for nearly 14 years. Canonically resident within the Diocese of Kansas, he has also led a multi-parish collaborative effort focused on mission and ministry in the city of Wichita. Prior to his work in Wichita, Fr. O’Connor served as priest-in-charge at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Altadena, California, and as associate rector at All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Montecito, California. He is also an instructor at the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry in Topeka, Kansas.

“We are thrilled to have Fr. Andrew join our Saint Francis family,” said Saint Francis President and CEO William Clark. “We are fortunate to be able to add his talents and leadership to our staff and to the families we serve. I am confident that Fr. Andrew will be instrumental in helping us fulfill our mission of providing healing and hope to children and families.&nbsp;

Saint Francis Ministries new executive officer for mission & ministry

&nbsp;Kenwood Park Drive will be closed on Thursday, June 8, at 3 pm through Sunday, June 11, at 9 pm to allow pedestrians safe access to and from the Smoky Hill River Festival as they enter the park on the Event Center Bridge.

Kenwood Park Drive closed during Smoky Hill River Festival

It’s a busy time on Kansas Wesleyan’s campus, perhaps the busiest ever, marked by some of the greatest successes in KWU’s long history. That success is due to supporters, who continued to fuel the rise of KWU this academic year. The university announced Saturday that it had surpassed $5.4 million in cash gifts this fiscal year, marking the fourth straight year it had achieved that feat.

The effort pushes The Power of AND Campaign near the $30 million mark.

The centerpiece of KWU’s fundraising continues to be the aforementioned campaign, which has driven the Music renovation project, Coyote Village (the university’s new student housing) and soon, Bieber Dining Hall (bon appétit). It has also boosted scholarships, helping lead to success in athletics and DECA, and provided new equipment for the Music department. KWU won the KCAC Commissioner’s Cup in athletics for the third time in four years, and has brought in well-respected educators to help lead the Music department, as well.

“It was another great year at Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “We have so many to thank! There are foundations — local, state and national — who have stepped in to advance the mission of KWU. Patrons who have walked alongside us for years have continued to do so, and new faces have come aboard after seeing everything that’s great about a KWU education. We thank all who helped make this such a great year.”

Throughout the fundraising success, KWU’s persistence and retention rates — two figures that tell the percentage of students advancing toward graduation — have been some of the highest in school history.

“Everything we do at Kansas Wesleyan is with the end goal of serving students,” concluded Oliver. “We want to create a rich, welcoming environment where they grow on all fronts, and are prepared to go into the world and make a difference. Supporters continue to fuel the rise of KWU

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas reminds everyone that the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a season of increased risk, especially for teen drivers, on the roadways, making the summer days the 100 Deadliest Days of the year.

"There is a lot of unstructured time for teen drivers," Steward said. "They are not in school. They are out having fun with their friends, maybe going to summer jobs, spending a lot more time driving at night than they do during the school year, which can be a risky element."

The numbers of people killed in crashes involving teens during the summer is significant.

"In Kansas, 105 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days in a ten-year period from 2012 to 2021," Steward said. "That represents 34% of all vehicle crash fatalities during that time period."&nbsp;&nbsp;

During their meeting Tuesday morning, Saline County Commissioners are scheduled to address naming Salina311 as the "official newspaper" of Saline County, purchase of a road magnet, bridge projects, and project based senior staffing needs.&nbsp;

A resolution to consider making Salina 311 the "official county newspaper."

Salina 311 does meet all four requirements as set out in statute and is published in Saline County. Salina Journal meets the requirements but is not published in Saline County but is printed in Kansas. 

Statute does allow for printing to occur in Kansas if there is no newspaper published in the County. Salina 311’s price proposals were also less than the Salina Journal’s price proposals. Staff recommends adopting the Resolution naming Salina 311 as the official county newspaper.

Request for approval to purchase a new road magnet

Operators use the road magnet to remove metal and debris from the roadway. This purchase would come under the single source supplier provision of the Saline County Purchasing Policy.

The magnet is industrial grade and built to rugged specifications. It will pick up a 16-penny nail from a height of 8 inches. The city has received a quote from Bunting. They are an industrial magnet supplier located in Newton, Kansas. The purchase price of the magnet would be $ 27,836.00.

Bridge Project Review and Road Closure Approval

Request for Action to provide overview of the current bridge projects.

A road maintenance agreement between Saline County and the City of Assaria

&nbsp;Assaria Road, within the city limits of Assaria, is considered a city connecting link according to K.S.A. 68-506f. Therefore, it is Saline County’s responsibility to maintain the through traveled lanes (12 feet on each side of centerline).This agreement details the responsibilities of Assaria Road from Old Hwy. 81 to Ohio Street.&nbsp;

Project-based temporary senior level staffing firms&nbsp;

On April 4th staff presented during a concept discussion the idea of potentially entering into an agreement with a firm(s) that could provide temporary senior level staffing for particular projects.

Both firms offer unique abilities to provide temporary project-based work such as researching and drafting new policies, preparing analyses for staff reports, and writing grant proposals to fund important projects.

This request for action is to enter into a master agreement with Strategic Government Resources (SGR) to provide temporary senior executive services. 

Staff recommends approving an agreement with Strategic Government Resources.

 </figure> BY SALINA POST The Friends of the Salina Public Library has scheduled a used books sale coming up next week.&nbsp;The organization will be offering the following items from 9:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. June 13 at the library, 301 W. 2024 City Budget and Awarding the bid for pond demolition at Jerry Ivey Park are on the City Commission’s agenda for Monday.

Study Sessions and City Commission meetings will take place in–person at the City/County Building in Room 107 and via Zoom until further notice. Meetings can be viewed at the City of Salina YouTube channel,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas">https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas</a>.

Commissioners are scheduled to meet in a study session at 2:00 p.m. Monday to review the 2024 budget and target fund balances, general overview of revenue estimates and capital planning
