USD 305 names Sept. 'Growing Greatness Award' recipient

A Salina man was arrested on multiple requested charges, including assault of a law enforcement officer and criminal threat&nbsp;after an alleged incident early Sunday morning in west Salina.

Officers were sent to the Travelers Lodge,&nbsp;245 S Broadway Blvd., at approximately 9:15 a.m. following a report that a man wanted to kill a woman in his room, Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said this morning.&nbsp;

&nbsp;When they arrived, they met 35-year-old Eric Ehster, a resident of the Travelers Lodge, and a 42-year-old female, who also lived in the room with Ehster.&nbsp;

"He [Ehster] disobeyed our commands and went further into the room," Tonniges said. "He began reaching around his pockets, so we had to go into the room and physically detain him. He resisted and took a swing at an officer, and missed."&nbsp;

Tonniges said the officer successfully deployed his taser and was able to detain Ehster.&nbsp;

Ehster was arrested on the following requested charges, Tonniges said.

● Aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer

● Criminal threat; Unknown circumstance

● Battery on LEO; Phys contact county/city LEO

● Interference with a law enforcement officer obstr/resist/oppose felony warrant

Battery of LEO, among requested charges for Salina man

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall spoke to reporters on Zoom Monday morning to explain his no vote on the stopgap spending bill passed over the weekend.

"I made it very clear from the very beginning, that I would vote for no funding for Ukraine, not a single dollar for Ukraine, unless we secured the border first," Marshall said. "I said that I would not do any more of these stopgap measures that we're doing, these continuing resolutions, as well. I said I wouldn't do any more of those and I wouldn't do any big omnibuses, that I will vote against those very consistently."

Marshall wants to see budgets passed with everyone doing their homework on time. That didn't happen here.

"The Budget Act of 1974 states a very clear process, what we should do when it comes to budgeting and setting up our appropriation process," Marshall said. "It has deadlines and dates on it. It starts with the first Monday in February, that the President shall submit their budget. President Biden was a month late with that. That sets up a domino of problems and he's not alone. It's unusual for a President in the past two decades, three decades, to submit a budget on time. Then, it has dates for Congress to do its work, as well. By April 15, we should submit a budget resolution that gives us top-line numbers for the appropriations commitees to work with. Basically, Congress totally ignores that process."

There are no real consequences for missing those deadlines, at this point.

"What happens if the President doesn't submit his budget in time? There's really no recourse," Marshall said. "I'll be working with my friends to try to come up with some type of sticks, so to speak, to encourage, to basically force the President to get the budget on time and for Congress to get a budget resolution done in time, as well."

The vote passed the Senate 88-9 and funds the government for 45 days.

Marshall explains no vote on stopgap spending bill

In 1977, Jennings Randolph, U.S. Senator for the State of West Virginia, introduced a joint resolution to the senate requesting the president to “issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September after Labor Day of each year as ‘National Grandparents’ Day’.”

 Congress passed the legislation, proclaiming National Grandparent's Day the first Sunday after Labor Day. On August 3, 1978, Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation, and the day was finally celebrated the following year.

On Sept. 22, Sacred Heart Jr./Sr. High and St. Mary's Grade School hosted Mass for 1,000 people at the Sacred Heart gymnasium to celebrate Grandparent's Day. The event began at 10:00 a.m.&nbsp;

Fr. Brian McCaffrey, Associate Pastor for St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, led the service.&nbsp;

Following Mass students showed their classrooms to their grandparents and attended a St. Mary's Grade School carnival featuring games and outdoor activities.&nbsp;

Sacred Heart's Grandparent's Day celebration was not only a day to celebrate the treasured relationship between grandchildren and their grandparents, but a day to celebrate as a whole community, giving thanks for the wise life lessons our grandparents teach us every day.&nbsp;

Fall harvest is in full swing on our central Kansas farm.

Our dryland and irrigated field corn has all been picked and all that’s left in those fields are corn stalks and a lot of dry organic material that was kicked out the back end of a combine.

The only corn remaining in the middle of one of these recently harvested fields is our popcorn crop.

We baby our popcorn like no other crop on our farm. It is strategically planted in areas near windbreaks that will hopefully help protect the plant from the brutal winds we sometimes experience. It’s always planted on irrigated acres to ensure it gets the water it needs during the growing season. It also receives the most verbal affirmations and words of encouragement from me during the growing season compared to any of our other crops. And it’s the crop that generally tests my patience and my nerves the most as harvest time is determined by a very narrow range of moisture present within the grain. 

If field corn is cut a little too wet, the elevator will pay a little less for it and you move on. If the popcorn is a little too wet, the popcorn won’t pop, thus defeating the purpose of growing popcorn. Making sure we harvest the popcorn within that tiny window of acceptable moisture levels literally determines whether or not we have popcorn available for our customers for the next year.

As we get closer to popcorn harvest, I tend to worry about a potential rain that could flood the field. During my time on the farm, we have had instances where heavy rains have flooded shut the roads and flooded fields of sorghum and field corn in water so deep we’ve been able to kayak in it.

The potential for a heavy downpour in the fall always enters my mind as we get closer and closer to the popcorn harvest.

The potential threat of a flood had me overlooking a more obvious threat – especially with it being so dry out here: fire. I was completely caught off guard when we recently received a phone call late one night from a neighbor who had noticed flames in a corn field. He wanted to know if it was a planned burn. It, in fact, was not a planned burn! 

Phone calls were made to 911 as my husband drove off to get a tractor and disc while I drove off to meet my father-in-law in the field. 

As I approached the popcorn field, the growing glow ahead of me confirmed we were not going to be able to snuff out this fire with a couple of shovels.

Soon sirens could be heard in the distance coming down our rural roads all enroute to our location. Those emergency trucks and water tankers and even personal vehicles responding to the fire were all driven by volunteers. It’s amazing how quickly they all responded and helped put out the fire – especially considering many of them are coming from their own farms located throughout the countryside in every direction.

This team of volunteers quickly drove through the field and extinguished the flames spreading through the corn stalks. When it was all said and done, the popcorn was spared with the fire line just a few hundred feet away from the start of the popcorn rows.

I’m thankful for the willingness of these men and women who serve their neighbors and assist in times of emergencies whether it be day or night. This wasn’t the first time we’ve needed help from emergency responders, and it probably won’t be the last time either. But this event reaffirmed my appreciation for the helpers in our community who are willing to assist their fellow rural neighbors. Afterall, if we didn’t have these organized and trained volunteers available and willing to help, who would? 

They sacrifice their time and resources at the drop of a hat when an emergency call goes out to help save or protect people and property. 

Neighbors helping neighbors – it’s part of what makes rural America such a special place.

The Kansas Board of Regents reports K-State Salina has experienced 8.6% growth in overall enrollment compared to the previous academic year. The most notable increase is the 21.8% growth in the campus’s fall 2023 freshman class. The Salina campus gained 145 first-time freshman and continues forward momentum in providing academic excellence and developing global leaders of tomorrow. The newly opened Earhart Hall also offers an exceptional student life experience to the growing student body.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This year’s enrollment gains are due to the collective commitment of faculty, staff and the entire K-State Salina community providing an outstanding experience to our students,” said Michael James,&nbsp;executive director of administration, finance and enrollment management. “As the campus continues to focus on innovation and quality education in aerospace and technology, it has become clear K-State Salina is an exceptional institution to attend and obtain your education. Women of Achievement (WOA) committee is excited to announce their upcoming event honoring some of Salina’s most impactful leaders.

“The last in-person WOA event was back in 2018, due to the pandemic,” said Event Chair, Lori Blake. “We’re so excited to both raise money for the YW legacy fund, and also to bring back a fun event honoring talented, compassionate local women and their contributions to the betterment of the community. Recent breakthrough may be another step toward nano uses in agriculture

And, as USDA and Kansas State University entomologists are finding out, not nearly as mighty.

The K-State researchers have published findings of a study in which they’ve tested nanomaterial – theirs is a product consisting of an agricultural waste product attached to a known antimicrobial – that is effective at killing mosquito larvae, while using far fewer insecticides in the process.

They’ve reported the breakthrough in the September issue of the American Chemical Society Omega Journal, which also features an image of their technology as one of the supplemental front covers of the month’s issue.

The work is part of the university’s larger vision to develop nanomaterial that researchers believe will not only reduce pesticide use in the environment, but also be a viable solution for many pests that affect agricultural production, such as Hessian fly, corn rootworm, grasshoppers, termites and more.

K-State’s program is funded for four years by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“If nanotechnology can be employed to control pests, it will greatly reduce the use of pesticides in the environment,” said Jeff Whitworth, a field crop entomologist with K-State Research and Extension. “And if researchers can find the right carriers for these nano insecticides – products that may be considered organic waste – that may also reduce the amount of organic waste.”

In the current project, K-State researchers coupled silver – a known antimicrobial – with a corn protein known as zein (pronounced zee-inn) that is typically a waste product. As mosquito larvae filter food from water, they ingest the nanomaterial containing silver.

“We found that in mosquito larvae, silver apparently gets into their mid-gut and kills the microbes that are necessary for mosquito larval well-being,” said K-State nano-entomologist Amie Norton.

The concentration of pesticide in the nanomaterial developed by the USDA/K-State team is, by far, less than what would traditionally be used to combat mosquito populations. According to Norton, K-State’s product included just 1 part per million of pesticide – a proportion similar to 1 drop of water in a 10 gallon fish tank.

She said normal concentrations of pesticide range from 10 to 32 parts per million.

“The advantage of nanotechnology is that you have a larger surface area to work with, and nanomaterials have more bioavailability of active ingredients due to their size,” Norton said. “The increased loading of pesticides onto the surface of nanomaterials and their ability to increase the bioavailability of ingredients to targeted pests results in the use of less active ingredients (pesticides), which leads to lower costs for those using these products.”

Silver is not a typical pesticide used in mosquito control, Whitworth said. Future applications are expected to include a more common pesticide – spinosad – and a growth regulator, methoprene, “so that what doesn’t kill them will keep them from growing into adults,” Norton said.

Nanoparticles are considered part of a bright new future for science and technology. By definition, a nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, so small that it cannot be detected by electronic microscopes.

For perspective, however, consider that one sheet of standard copy paper is 100,000 nanometers thick; a period at the end of this sentence is approximately 1 million nanometers. Or, one nanometer compares to a standard tennis ball in equal proportion to how that same tennis ball compares to planet Earth.

“We are just one year into this area of research,” Whitworth said. “We are looking for ways to recycle agriculture waste and convert it to something useful. It’s a step-by-step process; it takes a while and we are learning as we go.”

USDA, K-State entomologists use nanotechnology to combat mosquitos

Artwork of famous children's books and seasonal literature cover Oakdale Elementary School's library this year — Amy Pihl, Oakdale's new librarian, put up the decorations for the incoming students.

The school's library sees children of all ages, and Pihl said her main goal this year was to connect with students and help them along their education journies. 

"I'm going to see them grow for the next five years, so I'm going to get to know them," Pihl said. "I can go up to their kindergarten teacher and say, 'You remember how so and so was really tricky? Well, the work you did paid off because in four years, this is what he's doing now.'"

Pihl didn't begin her librarian career in education but at the Salina Public Library before taking a break to raise her children for the last seven years.

At Salina Public Library, Pihl worked with adults daily, with no plans to switch to elementary education.

"Before I had my own children, it was hard for me to envision working with kids," Pihl said. "My kids are in elementary school, so this sort of clicks."

Now, she enjoys seeing all elementary grades of children, impacting their lives with stories, literature education and digital literacy for the older students.

"One of my absolute favorite things, honestly, is just storytime on the rug," Pihl said. "I love helping with digital literacy, and helping especially with fifth graders who are about to go to middle school, to have digital citizenship."

The switch to elementary education was a shift for Pihl, especially being out of the workforce to spend more time with her young kids.

Now that her youngest enrolled in Kindergarten, she wanted to return to the workforce, and the years with her kids inspired her to pursue elementary education.

"This is a shift, but ultimately, it's my dream job," Pihl said. "Man, they sure smile, and they sure love you, and once you take the time to connect with them, it's totally amazing and worth it."

The new position faced challenges since Pihl would be the third person in the school's library in the last four years, and this sometimes made connecting with the older students in fourth or fifth grade difficult.

Even through the role's challenges, Pihl said she remained determined to connect with the older children and teach them as much as she can this year.

"I'm hoping by next year, the fourth graders and I can establish some of those relationships," Pihl said. "Make me love you, make me cry at your fifth-grade clapout — just make me invested and let's get invested in each other."

Oakdale Elementary School welcomes new librarian — Amy Pihl

By SALINA POST&nbsp; With fall harvest nearly here, motorists are encourage to use extra caution when driving in rural areas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) would like to remind motorists to use caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines and other implements. 

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections. 

Here are some tips to keep in mind from KHP: 

•Don’t assume the farmer knows you are there. Most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, however, most of their time must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

•Pass with extreme caution. Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly see the area you are passing. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

•When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass. Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns so allow it plenty of room and time to turn. Be alert to see if they might be turning into a driveway or field.

•Be patient. Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. They understand you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available.

•Think of the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed. Immediately slow down when you see the slow-moving vehicle emblem. While the emblems are visible from a long distance, it is difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on the vehicle, especially at night.

•Pay attention. When not focused solely on the road, motorists increase their chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle.

KHP: Watch out for farm trucks, equipment during harvest

To find, a little bit of cash for someone makes me feel pretty good, and makes our whole staff feel pretty good."

Since January this year, parts of western Kansas received almost 16 inches of above-normal precipitation, including towns like Liberal, Dodge City and Goodland.

These rains took some pressure off places like Garden City, which had the dryest year on record last year, and according to the Kansas Geological Survey, its conditions rivaled the Dust Bowl in the 1930s.

Water data manager Brownie Wilson said the rainfall greatly removed stress from groundwater use.

"When it rains or doesn't rain, it really determines how much groundwater is pumped or not," Wilson said.&nbsp;

Wilson said the extra precipitation decreased the pumping demands of farming operations, but due to Kansas' geology, it did not cause much aquifer recharge.

Over the High Plains Aquifer system in the West, which includes the Ogallala,&nbsp;Great Bend, and Equus Beds aquifers, the rock beds are deep and challenging to reach for most precipitation.

Significant precipitation events may not recharge the aquifers in western Kansas but decrease the groundwater system's decline.

"South-central Kansas, however, does tend to recharge a lot more than water tables closer to the land surface, and it's very sandy," Wilson said. "So those areas can actually get beneficial recharge from big precipitation events."

The aquifer is close to the surface in south-central Kansas. The aquifer is less than 100 feet from the surface in some areas.&nbsp;

Although the rain is welcome in western Kansas, most south-central and southeast Kansas received below-normal rainfall.&nbsp;

This year's regions impacted the most include Hutchinson, Emporia and almost 16 inches below-normal rainfall in Coffeyville and Chanute.

According to Wichita National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Katcham, south-central and southeastern Kansas will continue to see dry conditions. 

"We're in a dry period again, unfortunately," Katcham said. "In the short term, dry conditions with low relative humidities lead to increased elevated fire risk."

Katcham stressed the importance of fire risk during dry periods, with a chance of very high or extreme fire danger as Kansas sees high wind speeds through the fall.

Western Kansas rains help take some stress off High Plains Aquifer

Earlier this month on Sept. 19 Salina residents spent time at the Carver Center learning about where the candidates for Salina City Commission and USD 305 School Board stand on issues. The event was well attended, with standing room only during the school board portion of the forum.&nbsp;

Four of the six Salina City Commission candidates were in attendance.&nbsp;

Commission candidates Haley Helzer and Robert Klingenberg were not present.

Four other commission candidates, Chad Farber, Mike Hoppock, Trent Davis, and Jerry Ivey II, discussed issues such as high property taxes, homelessness, immigration, affordable housing, and the desire of some residents to reorganize the city commission's representation structure to allow for districts rather than at-large positions.&nbsp;
