After rounds of snow across the state, multiple bouts of arctic air will impact most Kansans this weekend and early next week, with windchills in the 20s below zero.

Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Jakub said temperatures will fall dangerously low Friday evening and Saturday morning, following that pattern through Tuesday morning.

"A daytime high of around five degrees on Saturday, a high of two degrees on Sunday, Monday, four degrees, so we're going to have low single-digit highs," Jakub said. "We're going to be setting some records with this."

According to Jakub, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, all have chances to break records from as far back as 1909.

Alongside the frigid conditions, windchills will dip to around 20 below zero throughout the weekend, lasting until Tuesday afternoon.

These conditions can become deadly — Jakub said that only 30 minutes of skin exposure to the cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia for those venturing outside.

Jakub recommended that staying indoors is the safest place for residents, but this weekend can become deadly for those stranded outside.

Forecasted flurries of snow will also move into Kansas alongside the frigid temperatures.

Many Salinans either live without a home or become stranded outside during harsh winter conditions, causing frostbite, hypothermia and sometimes death.&nbsp;

Due to this, Saline County Emergency Management created an <a href="https://www.salinecountyks.gov/alerts">information hub</a> for all Salinans in need.&nbsp;

"We have a banner on the County website that lists all the weather updates and all of our resources that are available for any condition that might come out of a winter storm," said Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis. "If you need places to go, they're listed — same-day shelters and their hours."

Often, winter weather causes power outages in neighborhoods across Saline County, plunging homes into dangerous conditions for children or senior residents.

"Be a good neighbor and check on your friends," Weis said. "If you're out of power... the mall is always a great place to just hang out, walk around and burn a couple hours, and it's free."

Weis mentioned a few other community locations and services but stressed that finding somewhere warm to go is critical.

In Salina, some community resources for individuals and families in need include the Salina Salvation Army, the Salina Grace Foundation and the Ashby House.

Ashby House serves women, families and children challenged by poverty by offering various programs — from emergency housing to financial and employment coaching.

Ashby House Executive Director Darrell Burgoon said the current Ashby House emergency and transitional shelters have very limited space but have plans to triple that capacity in the next few years.&nbsp;

In the fall of 2019, Ashby House began a project for a new emergency shelter made from a residential home, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all progress halted until recently.

&nbsp;"From the minute that I got hired a year and a half ago it was my goal to get that thing finished," Burgoon said. "So we hope to complete that house by this summer."

The house would have enough space for 22 adults and numerous children with an expansive basement.

Burgoon said even though the Ashby House's emergency shelter may have little availability, staff will help residents who visit them for help by directing them to other community resources.

NWS meteorologist forecasts record-breaking low temperatures ahead for Salina

Escape the Chill at Rolling Hills Zoo — Wildlife Museum open at half price

City of Salina and Saline County offices and facilities will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday. They will resume regular hours on Tuesday.

Veterans who need shelter or assistance due to the extreme cold temperatures should contact Dole VA at 316-685-2221 (toll free 888-878-6881), press “0” to contact the operator, then ask for the Emergency Department. Veterans can also walk into the Emergency Department and receive assistance. VA staff will assist Veterans with finding shelter or assistance for other needs.

Dole VA serves veterans who live in 59 of Kansas’ 105 counties. A map of those counties supported is on the Dole VA website,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/wichita-health-care/about-us/#about-theva-wichitahealthcare-" target="_blank">https://www.va.gov/wichita-health-care/about-us/#about-theva-wichitahealthcare-</a>. Veterans in any of those counties are encouraged to contact Dole VA when in need. A $30 cash donation enables us to purchase 60 cans of soup (please make checks payable to Souper Bowl of Hope). Donation collection will take place at all three Salina Dillon’s locations on the below dates and times.

KDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and give crews room to work as they continue to clear the roadways. Some highways remain closed due to drifting snow and dangerous winter weather;&nbsp;K-9 closed from Concordia to Beloit in Mitchell and Cloud counties and K-148 closed from U.S. 81 to K-15.

Travelers are cautioned not to drive around employees, signs and gates marking these closed highways. Doing so may result in a citation or fine.

The City of Salina announced Tuesday that it received nearly a million dollars to rehabilitate and repair a 10-block area in Salina.&nbsp;

This was the first time the city received a grant issued by the Federal Home Loan Banks. The $999,999 award was made possible through the partnership with local FHLB member - Equity Bank.&nbsp;

"This portion is sort of the second part of the 'Live Salina Plan," said Michelle Martin, City of Salina Community Relations Supervisor.&nbsp;"The first part was a new development, and then now we're in the phase of really working on preserving what we have."

Martin said that back in 2023, commissioners held a study session to hear recommendations regarding the next steps in fulfilling the Live Salina Plan, the city's strategic housing approach.

Until recently, no new housing units were being developed in the city, and older housing stock was not adequately maintained to keep pace with the city's housing needs.

With current employers like Great Plains Manufacturing &amp; Schwan's announcing labor expansions and new employers choosing to locate in Salina, the City Commission requested annual updates to the Live Salina Plan through 2030.&nbsp;

The 2021 Live Salina Supplement, recommended attention first be given to securing new housing developments "green field" housing before focusing on steps to revitalize and preserve existing neighborhoods.&nbsp;

The South View Estates and Aero Plans subdivisions are underway and will yield over 500 new single-family homes, and the City recently secured $25 million in incentives from the State of Kansas to enter into an agreement with a developer to construct 500 market rate apartment units.

"Our ultimate goal is hopefully that this will be an ongoing thing, that we will be able to find funding and continue and grow this program from that initial targetted area," Martin said.

The ten-block area being rehabilitated with the grant dollars is the area within the boundaries of State Street, Ninth Street, South Street and Broadway Ave. In the next four years, 44 owner-occupied homes will need structural and safety improvements.

On 01/04/2024 through 01/06/2024, Central High School Thespian Troupe 639 attended the Kansas Thespian Festival 2024 at the Hyatt Regency and Century II Convention Center in Wichita, KS. It competed in several categories, earning many awards, including Gold Honor Troupe for its year of work on productions, community service, fundraising, and troupe activities. Troupe 639 also received the highest honors of&nbsp;performing as a Mainstage production with their production of&nbsp;Noises Off! winning the Chapter Select One Act Competition for the fourth consecutive year and setting an&nbsp;all-time record of consecutive wins by a single school in this category for the Festival&nbsp;and qualifying the production of&nbsp;The 25th&nbsp;Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee&nbsp;for the International Thespian Festival 2024.&nbsp;Wyatt Angell was selected as a State Thespian Officer for the 2024-2025 Festival. Several students received superior ratings on their individual events (known as&nbsp;Thespys), qualifying them for the International Thespian Festival in June.&nbsp;

Students also attended workshops by professional presenters, connected with other thespians from around the state, and shared their love of theatre with other young artists in both performance and competition events. CHS troupe 639 will be working on raising funds to present their champion one act at the International Thespian Festival 2024. This is an honor awarded to only one high school in the entire state, an honor that has been held by the Troupe 639 for four consecutive years.&nbsp;

What is the International Thespian Society?

&nbsp;The International Thespian Society (ITS), founded in 1929, is an honorary organization for high school and middle school theatre students located at more than 4,900 affiliated secondary schools across America and abroad. The mission of ITS is to honor student achievement in the theatre arts. High school inductees are known as Thespians and junior high/middle school inductees are known as Junior Thespians. ITS is a division of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA). Kansas Thespians falls under this organization as the state chapter.

Central High Thespian Troupe 639 receives high awards and honors from Kansas Thespian Festival 2024

Kansas Wesleyan University will welcome Rev. Terrell T. Davis to Mabee Arena on Monday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. as the keynote speaker for the university’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration service.

Davis serves as the head of school for the Independent School in Wichita, Kan. During his 26 years in education, he has developed a track record of success as middle school principal throughout various districts in Kansas, resulting in multiple awards, including the Kansas Middle School Principal of the Year in 2017.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Communications and Theatre Arts from Sterling College, a master’s in Education from Newman University and an Education Specialist degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.

He is also an education advocate, sought-after public speaker, father and reverend at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Wichita.

Music at the service will be performed by KWU’s Philharmonic Choir.

KWU welcomes all to attend Monday’s service, which is one of several events happening throughout Salina to recognize the day. Admission is free.

On Monday, December 18, 2023, at about 9:50 p.m., three male subjects entered Target, 2939 Market Place, and took approximately $1,720 worth of merchandise from the store without paying. 

The stolen merchandise included multiple Lego sets, clothing items, personal care items, and miscellaneous household items.

The subjects exited the store and loaded the items in a U-Haul van and left in the van and a dark colored Chrysler 300

On Jan. 12, 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records (originally Tamla Records) in Detroit.

In 1828, the United States and Mexico signed a Treaty of Limits defining the boundary between the two countries to be the same as the one established by an 1819 treaty between the U.S. and Spain.

In 1910, at a White House dinner hosted by President William Howard Taft, Baroness Rosen, wife of the Russian ambassador, caused a stir by requesting and smoking a cigarette — it was, apparently, the first time a woman had smoked openly during a public function in the executive mansion. (Some of the other women present who had brought their own cigarettes began lighting up in turn.)

All lanes of I-70 reopened

ROOKS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7a.m. Thursday in Rooks County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp; 2014 Chevy UT driven by Amber Dawn Hageman, 30, Salina, was westbound on N Terrace Road at 16 Road. The driver fell asleep.&nbsp; The SUV traveled off the roadway to an embankment and into a field.

EMS transported&nbsp; Hageman to the Rooks County Health Center. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Carrying too much body condition early in life can have negative impacts on heifers retained as replacements, according to the experts at the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute.

On a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/01/05/prepare-for-your-future-creep-feeding-disease-issues/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, the experts discussed how adding additional feed to the diet of calves still suckling their dams can be beneficial from a growth standpoint but warned that those diets must be carefully monitored to keep the heifers from getting overconditioned. This supplement feed is termed creep feed, which can be any feed supplement that is given to the calves that the dams cannot access.

Beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said it is important to know the feed conversion.

“I recommend limiting the intake of the creep feed to 3-4 pounds of feed per head per day; if it gets higher than that, the feed conversion is poor and the profitability is worse because expensive feed is being substituted for a cheaper, forage-based feed source,” Lancaster said.

K-State agricultural economist Dustin Pendell advised producers to calculate the cost of supplemental feed as it relates to the rate of gain for the animal.

“Producers need to know the feed cost per pound of gain and the expected price of the weaned calf,” he said. “As long as the expected price is greater than or equal to the cost of the additional pound of feed, then it makes sense to creep feed.”

However, for heifer calves that will retained as replacements K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said that while there are growth and nutrition benefits when producers choose to offer supplemental feed to heifer calves, the diet needs to be managed closely so that those heifer calves are not overconditioned.

“Research has shown that heifer calves that haven’t reached puberty are fed a diet that causes them to deposit fat in the mammary gland, they may have decreased lifetime milk production,” said Larson.

K-State veterinarian Brad White said there is a nutritional plane that is optimum for growth.

“While it is important for heifer calves to grow bone and muscle, producers need to be cautious to make sure the females aren’t depositing fat in the mammary gland,” White said.

For heifers that are going to be retained in the herd, Larson does not recommend offering free-choice creep feed.

“It is best to allow them to grow on forage while they are suckling, wean them at the appropriate time and then hand deliver the nutrients they need to keep them in their optimum growth curve,” Larson said.

Cattle Chat: Ways to meet the nutritional needs of heifer calves

Salina Police Department officers arrested one of the suspects who burglarized the Hideaway Bar early on Monday, Jan. 8.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said officers identified one of the suspects who committed the burglary through their investigations and a tip from the community.

At 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, officers conducted a traffic stop with 44-year-old Patrick Hull Jr. in the 400 block of State Street after identifying his vehicle. 

"We did two search warrants at his residence in Salina," Feldman said. "The investigation is continuing, and we hope to make further arrests."

Feldman said Hull did not resist arrest during the traffic stop, and SPD officers requested charges for burglary, two counts of felony theft, two counts of damage to property and driving while suspended.

During the early morning hours on Monday, Jan. 8, the Hideaway Bar at 540 Willis Ave. reported a burglary that caused thousands of dollars in losses.

According to Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman, an unknown number of suspects broke a window to gain entry to the business.

"Upon entering the business, suspects forced entry into a Dragon's Ascent video game, removing the money the game contained," Feldman said. "The game was damaged in the process."

Feldman said the losses from the crime totaled around $5,000, and SPD officers continue to investigate the incident.
