Chorus, dance and meaningful speeches filled St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, SJMBC, Monday afternoon, celebrating the life and legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and how to continue his work today.

Toward the end of the celebration, the keynote speaker and SJMBC Youth Choir Director, Ralita Cheeks, informed the audience of the meaning behind diversity and encouraged them to use it in everyday life.

"I am proposing that we take real big concepts like diversity, and we apply that — I have a dream that one day my little children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," Cheeks said. "You may not look like me, you may not think like me, but you say you want to come and work with me to create the blueprint? Well, I think it's going to be okay."

Cheeks provided more to this thought, with an analogy that a cake made from only one ingredient would crumble and barely resemble the recipe set before the baker.

She set up the analogy, stating that as she bakes, she enjoys setting out each ingredient before beginning, setting up the "blueprint" to follow.&nbsp;

"If I'm baking a cake, and I don't actually put any of that stuff [ingredients] into the bowl, I don't get anything that diversity had to offer," Cheeks said. "So listen, we're talking about diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, and what I'm proposing is that we utilize these tools to create a new culture — so let's talk about building."

The "blueprint" refers to King's activism during the Civil Rights Movement, which Cheeks said still holds today.&nbsp;

The song, "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," began the celebration at noon, with the Salina Central High School, SCHS, Choir following after a few short words from Pastor Brandon Cheeks welcoming the audience.

After SCHS concluded their song "Free Spirit," Kansas Wesleyan University Student and youth speaker Keenan Hobbs gave insight into his generation's work from King's legacy.

Hobbs shared about his work with youth and the benefits of swapping life stories and sharing knowledge with everyone at the table.

"Sharing knowledge with the youth is the key to many aspects of change," Hobbs said. "We must create spaces where people feel safe to share their experiences, fears and hopes, making sure we listen with open arms and hearts. You can gain an understanding of each other, and you can learn from one another."

One of the focuses during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration was youth and passing knowledge and experiences from previous generations to the next.

This idea presented itself through the event schedule — six of the seven presentations centered around youth expression and art through dance and song.

When Hobbs concluded his speech, the SJMBC Youth Choir took the stage and performed "Hang On," with lyrics encouraging the audience to persevere toward their goals.

The SJMBC Men of Praise youth performance group followed the choir, presenting an original dance for the audience.&nbsp;

Salina Central High School, SSHS, Choir performed the song "New Dawn" next, with the SJMBC Angels for Christ dancing group concluding the youth presentations.

Cheeks then took to the stage to present her thoughts on King's legacy, work, and meaning for the new generations to the audience.&nbsp;

Outside of her work at SJMBC, Cheeks works as a school counselor at SCHS and has worked in social justice and activism.

"We like to affirm our students and encourage them to push past what they can see. So instantly, when I say 'diversity,' a lot of you, not all of you probably, saw races and ethnicities in your mind. As a school counselor, I want to tell you, 'Yes, and,'" Cheeks said. "Because when I talk about diversity, it's not just about races and ethnicities, I'm talking about gender, about able-bodied. I'm talking about bodies that need assistance. I'm talking about your learners who excel and those who need some assistance — that's diversity."

She continued that without including everyone in decision-making, businesses and community spaces — many will miss the critical experiences and knowledge those from various backgrounds have to offer.

"Call to action is that as we are trying to create new cultue, can we please try appreciating diversity, utilizing equity, puposefully include people," Cheeks said. "If somebody proposes an idea, let's really look to see what that idea might look like. Include them in the process so that we can create a sense of belonging."

She concluded her presentation with a quote from King.

"I have a dream that one day every valley will be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight," Cheeks quoted King. "And the glory of God will be revealed, and all flesh will see it together."

‘Changing the Culture’ provides platform for youth experience at 2024 MLK Day Celebration

SALINE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after noon Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Peterbilt truck driven by Kathryn&nbsp;Morgan, 34, Kansas City, Kansas,&nbsp;was eastbound on Kansas 140 which was snow covered.&nbsp; The right wheels dropped off the edge of the highway and the vehicle overturned in the south ditch.

EMS transported Morgan to Salina Regional Health Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

It shouldn’t take courage to do what Rep.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2023_24/members/rep_howe_steven_1/">Steven Howe</a>, R-Salina, did earlier this month.

Howe wrote a column about former President Donald Trump, the Jan. 6 insurrection and election denialism. He asked his fellow Republicans,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://salinapost.com/posts/33c904d2-daa4-4be1-9579-7144c08488a5">in plain language</a>, to take a different path while they still have time. With a full primary schedule ahead of us — and the Kansas presidential primary&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/presidential-preference-primary.html">set for March 19</a>&nbsp;— the party could choose to look forward rather than backward, focus on attracting new voters rather than exacting revenge, and work together with Democrats for the good of our country.

Sure, I can hear you all out there saying,&nbsp;fat chance of that ever happening.

Yet Howe speaks with remarkable sincerity. As long as the GOP includes folks like him, we can’t abandon hope.

“For our republic to survive, it needs the peaceful transfer of power,” Howe told me during this week’s Kansas Reflector podcast. “And that is a bedrock foundational issue that has allowed us to survive as a democratic republic. And I feel like that is not something you toy with.”

Opinion writers and political pundits have spilled a lot of ink in recent years&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/reactions-menendez-trump-indictments-offer-partisan-case-study-rcna119689">about party asymmetry</a>. In other words, Democrats and Republicans don’t always behave in the same way. Democrats encompass a wide variety of warring factions, while Republicans look for order imposed from above. This can be overstated, but you certainly don’t have to look far before finding Democrats&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/01/12/david-axelrod-obama-biden-2024-00135194">bad-mouthing</a>&nbsp;President Joe Biden or his reelection campaign.

Finding Republicans willing to speak out against Trump — a twice-impeached former president who lost reelection and was subsequently indicted on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/trump-charges-jan-6-classified-documents/">91 felony counts</a>&nbsp;— takes more effort.

Yes, Howe is conservative. Yes, his political beliefs and ideology likely differ from mine. He also respects reality.

“After I wrote this, I received a message from a neighbor, or someone in the neighborhood, and someone that I’ve known for a while,” Howe said. “And they said they still believe the election was stolen, three years since Jan. 6 has happened. And I don’t know if I can change the minds of fellow Republicans that still believe that, because people will believe what they want to believe. And I’m only one person, and that I’m trying to shine the light on some things here for our fellow Republicans to consider.”

He added: “I think Republicans need to know that there is a Republican at the state level that isn’t going to support the former president.”

The most recent polling data&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-primary-r/2024/iowa/">aggregated by FiveThirtyEight.com</a>&nbsp;suggests that even in Iowa, only a smidge more than 50% of Republicans would support the former president in the caucus. But as happened in 2016, an array of other candidates split the opposition vote.

As we’ve seen repeatedly in Kansas, reliable Republican voters seldom feel comfortable straying from their party when the general election comes around. That means that the choice of voters in primaries and caucuses — even if they represent a fraction of a fraction — carry outsized weight. Kansas political operatives have used this fact over the years to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2012/08/the-great-kansas-republican-purge-of-2012.html">purge the Kansas Legislature</a>&nbsp;of moderate voices.

All this empowers an ideologue like Trump.

And it leaves normal people&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/12/19/kansans-have-picked-a-less-awful-license-plate-just-like-politics-we-deserved-better-choices/">out in the cold</a>, unrepresented by their party.

“I’ve received quite a few encouraging notes from constituents, people that I’ve never heard from before, or maybe I’ve never met in person, but have sent me notes by email, some phone calls,” Howe said. “And people were encouraged by me coming forward and in writing the piece. And I think there’s more Republicans still out there that perhaps don’t want to speak publicly. They don’t want to get the backlash or the retribution that the former president has talked about if he’s reelected.”

The representative craves, as do I, a return to a different kind of political discourse. As Kansas Reflector’s opinion editor, I would love to write more often about truly progressive topics. Throughout the past three years&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/12/22/as-bomb-cyclone-sends-kansas-into-deep-freeze-lets-answer-some-reader-questions/">I have instead</a>&nbsp;written repeatedly about basic facts. Science is real. Vaccines work. Widespread election fraud doesn’t happen.

Both Republicans and Democrats used to agree, if nothing else,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://theconversation.com/our-shared-reality-is-fraying-103065">on a shared basis</a>&nbsp;of real-world experience.

“To continue as a civil society, we need to allow each other space to be heard, and to listen,” Howe said. “And just because someone disagrees with your opinion, on a policy matter, or something like that, doesn’t mean they’re a bad person. And so I think a lot of times these days, people take things so personally, or they make it personal, when it doesn’t have to be. And I think that’s the way we move forward is being civil, allowing for discourse, especially discourse from the other side. And we can find common ground.”

I sure hope so. But we all have to make it through the next act of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/01/14/donald-trump-says-its-worth-it-to-vote-in-iowa-caucus/72226921007/">Donald Trump show</a>&nbsp;first.

With a full primary schedule ahead of us — and the Kansas presidential primary&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/presidential-preference-primary.html">set for March 19</a>&nbsp;— the party could choose to look forward rather than backward, focus on attracting new voters rather than exacting revenge, and work together with Democrats for the good of our country.Sure, I can hear you all out there saying,&nbsp;fat chance of that ever happening.Yet Howe speaks with remarkable sincerity. As long as the GOP includes folks like him, we can’t abandon hope.“For our republic to survive, it needs the peaceful transfer of power,” Howe told me during this week’s Kansas Reflector podcast. “And that is a bedrock foundational issue that has allowed us to survive as a democratic republic. And I feel like that is not something you toy with.”Opinion writers and political pundits have spilled a lot of ink in recent years&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/reactions-menendez-trump-indictments-offer-partisan-case-study-rcna119689">about party asymmetry</a>. In other words, Democrats and Republicans don’t always behave in the same way. Democrats encompass a wide variety of warring factions, while Republicans look for order imposed from above. This can be overstated, but you certainly don’t have to look far before finding Democrats&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/01/12/david-axelrod-obama-biden-2024-00135194">bad-mouthing</a>&nbsp;President Joe Biden or his reelection campaign.Finding Republicans willing to speak out against Trump — a twice-impeached former president who lost reelection and was subsequently indicted on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/trump-charges-jan-6-classified-documents/">91 felony counts</a>&nbsp;— takes more effort.Yes, Howe is conservative. Yes, his political beliefs and ideology likely differ from mine. He also respects reality.<figure>

 </figure>“After I wrote this, I received a message from a neighbor, or someone in the neighborhood, and someone that I’ve known for a while,” Howe said. “And they said they still believe the election was stolen, three years since Jan. 6 has happened. And I don’t know if I can change the minds of fellow Republicans that still believe that, because people will believe what they want to believe. And I’m only one person, and that I’m trying to shine the light on some things here for our fellow Republicans to consider.”He added: “I think Republicans need to know that there is a Republican at the state level that isn’t going to support the former president.”The most recent polling data&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-primary-r/2024/iowa/">aggregated by FiveThirtyEight.com</a>&nbsp;suggests that even in Iowa, only a smidge more than 50% of Republicans would support the former president in the caucus. But as happened in 2016, an array of other candidates split the opposition vote.As we’ve seen repeatedly in Kansas, reliable Republican voters seldom feel comfortable straying from their party when the general election comes around. That means that the choice of voters in primaries and caucuses — even if they represent a fraction of a fraction — carry outsized weight. Kansas political operatives have used this fact over the years to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2012/08/the-great-kansas-republican-purge-of-2012.html">purge the Kansas Legislature</a>&nbsp;of moderate voices.All this empowers an ideologue like Trump.And it leaves normal people&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/12/19/kansans-have-picked-a-less-awful-license-plate-just-like-politics-we-deserved-better-choices/">out in the cold</a>, unrepresented by their party.“I’ve received quite a few encouraging notes from constituents, people that I’ve never heard from before, or maybe I’ve never met in person, but have sent me notes by email, some phone calls,” Howe said. “And people were encouraged by me coming forward and in writing the piece. And I think there’s more Republicans still out there that perhaps don’t want to speak publicly. They don’t want to get the backlash or the retribution that the former president has talked about if he’s reelected.”The representative craves, as do I, a return to a different kind of political discourse. As Kansas Reflector’s opinion editor, I would love to write more often about truly progressive topics. Throughout the past three years&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/12/22/as-bomb-cyclone-sends-kansas-into-deep-freeze-lets-answer-some-reader-questions/">I have instead</a>&nbsp;written repeatedly about basic facts. Science is real. Vaccines work. Escape the cold Monday’s ‘bonus day’ at Rolling Hills Zoo 

With a brand new building, many unseen hiccups regularly come to light once put to the "official" test.

 At the new Saline County Jail, one hiccup presented itself during a record-breaking cold snap — inconsistent heating for two pods.

On Saturday night, staff at the Saline County Jail noticed two pods were not receiving proper heating from the working HVAC system, causing them to become chillier than the rest of the jail.

According to Saline County Administrator Phil Smith-Hanes, the failure stemmed from the computer system not properly sending a signal for heat in two of the pods. 

"The maintenance staff at the jail became aware that in two of the pods, the heat being called for by the computer was not being delivered," Smith-Hanes said. "Parts of the building are being heated, so it's just not delivering to one part of the building for whatever reason."

Smith-Hanes said contractors fixed one of the pods' heating on Saturday but continued to work on the second through Sunday.

Even though temperatures dipped to 5 degrees below zero on Saturday night, Saline County Sheriff Rodger Soldan said every inmate kept warm due to the sheer size of the jail.

"The inmate population isn't up to the jail's capacity yet," Soldan said. "We only have 230 inmates, and we've got a 400-bed jail, so a third of it was basically empty."

The system errors have been a recurring issue for staff and inmates at the jail, which Smith-Hanes and Soldan said contributed to waiting to move inmates after construction concluded.

During this latest system snafu, the staff kept every inmate safe, with Soldan reporting no exposure or cold-related injuries.

"All the inmates got moved out of that pod into the third that was working just fine," Smith-Hanes said. "Everybody's nice and warm, and we're trying to figure out why the malfunction was happening.

Since the building is new, staff continue to learn about its complicated computer system and how to utilize its entire capacity best.

"It's one of the things where we had an issue earlier, a sort of similar thing in the medical unit, and we were figuring that out," Smith-Hanes said. "That was one of the reasons we didn't move people in quite as soon as we had originally wanted because we're trying to get ahead of these issues."

As of Sunday, staff continued to work on the second pod that did not receive heat from the system.

Freezing cold temperatures, light snow — NWS Monday Forecast

According to Sunbelt Solomon the donation will fund new equipment and support initiatives such as the fire departments’ protection program.

These programs include educating and support community members about emergency response procedures, fire code applications, and public fire education.

The donation will be presented on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 7 p.m. in Solomon, KS at the Sunbelt Solomon Complex, which is located at 134 W. Main Street. Gus Cedeño, CEO of Sunbelt Solomon, will be in attendance along with Kevin Krueger, Service Center Director at the Company’s Solomon location.

Dickinson County Officials, Solomon City Council members and personnel from the fire department will also be in attendance.

For some, life changes can be both exciting and challenging, and for others, it can be difficult, especially for an elderly person who is moving to a new living situation.

In times like these, K-State Research and Extension adult development and aging specialist Erin Martinez said it is important to involve the person who will be moving in the decision to relocate.

“Adult children need to remember that this is a person who has had their own life experiences, expertise and independence, and they have emotional ties to the place they are living, so the decision to relocate needs to be handled with sensitivity,” Martinez said.

Before deciding to relocate, Martinez encourages families to explore all other options to make the home environment easier to navigate for the resident, such as adding handrails and ramps as well as seeing if other in-home support services can be provided.

“In many communities, there are services that will allow a person to live independently a while longer, so the first step is to reach out to your insurance provider to see if there is an allowance for assisted care or respite care that is included,” Martinez said. “Some assistive technologies may also be included, making it easier for someone to remain in their home.”

If remaining in the home is no longer an option, Martinez encouraged families to schedule a time to meet and visit about the next steps. She said that there may be a person in the family who has expertise or a special connection with the elderly person and they might be the best person to start the conversation.

“Think about having a family dinner and talk about how to make things better for that parent rather than giving them a directive,” Martinez said.

Once the elderly person and their family have decided that there needs to be a relocation, Martinez encourages families to start by writing down what services will be needed.

“Make a list of the typical services the person needs in a month and have that list with you when meeting with potential facilities,” Martinez said.

As an example, she said some of those routine services might include medical care, salon access, religious worship spaces, and more.

When setting up a facility tour, Martinez said pay attention to the surrounding space to see if it projects a comfortable, home environment, and observe how the caregivers are interacting with the residents.

For facility reviews, Martinez said check out the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cms.gov/">Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services</a>&nbsp;website.

“A great option is a continuing care retirement community because those facilities offer multiple levels of care,” Martinez said. “People can begin in independent living and gain access to amenities and services as needed, and then eventually if they need to move to assisted living or a nursing home environment those options are available as well.”

When moving to a new home environment, Martinez said it is important to try to make it feel as comfortable as possible for the resident.

“Bring as much from home as the facility will allow; if they have a chair that they always sit in at home, bring it as well as photos or other items that are meaningful to them,” Martinez said. “It is important to make sure it feels like a home environment and not an institution.”

Lastly, Martinez said, “Remember to treat older adults the way you’d want to be treated in a kind and gentle way, rather than telling them this is what they are going to do.”

 </figure><a href="mailto:lmoser@ksu.edu" target="_blank">By LISA MOSE</a>R&nbsp;K-State Research and Extension news serviceFor some, life changes can be both exciting and challenging, and for others, it can be difficult, especially for an elderly person who is moving to a new living situation.In times like these, K-State Research and Extension adult development and aging specialist Erin Martinez said it is important to involve the person who will be moving in the decision to relocate.“Adult children need to remember that this is a person who has had their own life experiences, expertise and independence, and they have emotional ties to the place they are living, so the decision to relocate needs to be handled with sensitivity,” Martinez said.Before deciding to relocate, Martinez encourages families to explore all other options to make the home environment easier to navigate for the resident, such as adding handrails and ramps as well as seeing if other in-home support services can be provided.“In many communities, there are services that will allow a person to live independently a while longer, so the first step is to reach out to your insurance provider to see if there is an allowance for assisted care or respite care that is included,” Martinez said. “Some assistive technologies may also be included, making it easier for someone to remain in their home.”If remaining in the home is no longer an option, Martinez encouraged families to schedule a time to meet and visit about the next steps. She said that there may be a person in the family who has expertise or a special connection with the elderly person and they might be the best person to start the conversation.“Think about having a family dinner and talk about how to make things better for that parent rather than giving them a directive,” Martinez said.Once the elderly person and their family have decided that there needs to be a relocation, Martinez encourages families to start by writing down what services will be needed.“Make a list of the typical services the person needs in a month and have that list with you when meeting with potential facilities,” Martinez said.As an example, she said some of those routine services might include medical care, salon access, religious worship spaces, and more.When setting up a facility tour, Martinez said pay attention to the surrounding space to see if it projects a comfortable, home environment, and observe how the caregivers are interacting with the residents.For facility reviews, Martinez said check out the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cms.gov/">Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services</a>&nbsp;website.“A great option is a continuing care retirement community because those facilities offer multiple levels of care,” Martinez said. “People can begin in independent living and gain access to amenities and services as needed, and then eventually if they need to move to assisted living or a nursing home environment those options are available as well.”When moving to a new home environment, Martinez said it is important to try to make it feel as comfortable as possible for the resident.“Bring as much from home as the facility will allow; if they have a chair that they always sit in at home, bring it as well as photos or other items that are meaningful to them,” Martinez said. “It is important to make sure it feels like a home environment and not an institution.”Lastly, Martinez said, “Remember to treat older adults the way you’d want to be treated in a kind and gentle way, rather than telling them this is what they are going to do.”

Area students earn Fall 2023 K-State honors

For many, the dentist's office is often a daunting medical visit with an atmosphere of tentative calm. 

The scene at Tony's Pizza Event Center contrasted this norm, with many patients, adults and children alike, arriving with smiles, ready to receive donated treatment by local and out-of-state dental professionals.

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12 and 13, the Kansas Mission of Mercy, or KMOM, visited Salina and donated more than $400,000 in dental care to the community.

Many families visited the clinic, where KMOM provided children's appointments while also treating parents.

Due to the inclement weather, staff opened the doors to the event center during the night to allow visitors to wait inside a waiting room through the early morning hours.

Although volunteers intend to accept visitors for as long as possible throughout Friday and Saturday, staffing limitations and ranging dental treatments caused KMOM's doors to close at 9 a.m.

KMOM staff continued to attend children's appointments throughout the day. Inside the clinic floor at the children's station, a small TV playing children's cartoons entertained visitors while waiting.

According to Independence dentist and long-time volunteer Dr. Cindi Sherwood, each patients' needs are different, and to ensure those already inside the venue received proper care before the event ended, they had to end walk-ins early.

Sherwood said she has volunteered for the last 21 KMOM events and found giving back to the community is important for her as a professional.

"It's very heartwarming. As a professional, I feel you should give back, and it's really fun," Sherwood said. "It's hard work — many volunteers like me really like doing it, or you don't. Some people come and do it and decide, 'It's not for me.' but I think it's very rewarding."

Most dental volunteers begin treating patients as early as 5 a.m. but wake up earlier to prepare stations and sanitize tools and surfaces.

Once visitors arrived at the clinic, staff had them wait inside a side room of Tony's Pizza Event Center while filling out health information and other documents.

After providing that information, volunteer dentists would perform panoramic X-rays and a general examination before sending them to the clinic floor in the venue's main arena.

"They go from X-rays to dental triage where the dentist takes a look at them to see what they need and what the patient wants to have done,"&nbsp;Sherwood said.

When patients reach the clinic floor, some receive hundreds or even thousands of dollars in free dental care.

The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation has produced the KMOM event for 23 years and, throughout that time, has donated more than $22,500,000 in dental care.

"We fill in that gap for those with no alternative to seek the treatment they need," said Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation Executive Director Niki Sadler. "We're that format where they can come and get that treatment and get out of pain to get their smile back and feel better."

More than 12,000 professional dentists have donated their time in the last two decades to the organization. Each year a volunteer joins the event, they earn a star on their name tag&nbsp;

According to Sadler, the Salina KMOM reached more than $400,000 in donated care by Saturday morning.

"I have a lot of extractions that have to get done, which were very expensive," said Great Bend resident Selena Armstrong. "This has saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars." 

Armstrong said she has struggled to find quality dental care for all her medical needs in her local community but saw the quality and care from volunteers at the clinic.

"With all the time the volunteers have put into this, it's very emotional," Armstrong said.

Barton Community College offered to help transport students to the clinic, where Armstrong and her boyfriend, Brandon Goodwin, joined the journey and received general dental care.

The group traveled to Salina on Friday and stayed in a hotel to wait outdoors early on Saturday.

Many clinic patrons mirrored Armstrong and Goodwin, traveling the day before and waiting in line for hours to receive dental treatment. 

"I don't have dental insurance, so I came to get my teeth cleaned," Goodwin said. "It made me feel good and confident, and I got to learn about how to take care of my mouth a lot better today." 

KMOM staff recommended visitors plan well in advance for the clinic, arriving the night before or early the same morning to get a spot before seats fill.

Although the doors may close to visitors through the days of the event, staff will work to accept new patients later in the day to continue providing treatment.

2024 Kansas Mission of Mercy Salina donates more than $400,000 in dental care

REPUBLIC COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Sunday in Republic County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Conrad Eldon Trost, 50, Concordia, was&nbsp;southbound on 180 Road and failed to come to a complete stop at&nbsp; at Kansas 148.

The pickup struck an eastbound 2016 Ford Taurus driven by Monica Ann&nbsp;Cherney, 34, Concordia.

EMS transported Cherney to the Republic County Hospital. Trost was not wearing a seat belt and not injured, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

Kansas&nbsp;Wesleyan’s Criminal Justice program continues to grow, as the university announced&nbsp;Friday&nbsp;that it has received a $90,000 grant to expand its law enforcement officer&nbsp;(LEO)&nbsp;certificate program.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to states and units of local government. These funds are&nbsp;in addition to those&nbsp;announced in December&nbsp;from the Jack Wilson Charitable Trust, which&nbsp;will be used to open a crime lab and experiential learning center.&nbsp;

KWU’s Criminal Justice certificate program began in 2022,&nbsp;helped by grant funding and a partnership with Saline County. At the time, the program was specific to law enforcement officials working in Saline County. This announcement, however, opens the program to law enforcement officers statewide, who will be able to earn the certificate free of charge. In addition, the coursework will count toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree.&nbsp;

“We’re excited to expand this program,” said Professor&nbsp;David Lanning, who is overseeing the effort. “It provides a great opportunity for LEOs across the state to deepen their education at no cost, as books, fees and tuition are all paid for through this grant.”

Up to 50&nbsp;total&nbsp;spots are available in the program, which will be renamed the Jack Wilson Continuing Adult Education&nbsp;Program. Courses include Leadership for the Future, Culturally Informed, and Trauma Informed.&nbsp;

“Our Criminal Justice program is truly on the rise,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Offering a program like this statewide can make Kansas a better place to live, work and play, and we’re thrilled that&nbsp;so many share&nbsp;that vision.”

Grant Enables KWU to Expand Criminal Justice Certificate Program
