Local Salina band, The Sunset Sinners, took to the road this year, with multiple live music festivals on the roster and a few new opportunities.

The four-piece music group also recently remastered two of their most popular songs, "Always Time For One More Beer" and "Friday Night," which were released last Friday.

"2024 has started off with a bang for us," said drummer Blake Blackim.

Outside of remastering a few of their hit songs, the band plans to develop new music this year at a well-known production site — Yellow Dog Studios.

The Sunset Sinners music is what the members call "whiskey barrel rock," a fusion of 70s and Southern Rock and Roll, with a mix of "Red Dirt Country."

Group members include Blackim on the drums, Tony Bowell as a guitarist and vocalist, Sean Herrington as a bass guitarist and vocalist, and Nick Schyler on lead guitar.

Two festivals they will perform at include the <a href="https://sunsetsolarbration.online/">Sunset Solarbration Festival</a> in Texarkana, Texas, in April and the Wild West Festival in Hays in July. Blackim said they also agreed to headline another unnamed festival later in the year.

Outside those live music settings, the band traveled to Texas this week to record new music at the well-known studio.

"We just got to Austin, where we'll be recording new Sinner tunes for upcoming singles and album at the famed Yellow Dog Studios that sits on a ranch in Wimberley, just outside of Austin," Blackim said. "We're excited as it's really the first time we've worked with a Grammy-winning producer to give us a fifth set of ears."

The group has worked with Grammy winners on their past music, but this will be the first time they work in-studio on new music.

Yellow Dog Studios has worked with famous, nationally-known artists like Garth Brooks and the rock group Green Day, among many others.

"We'll primarily work with Casey Johns and David Pearceful," Blackim said. "We're going in with at least four solid songs, and we'll see what happens. I'm sure the juices will flow, and we'll end up with more."

The Sunset Sinners will begin recording early Thursday morning and work until Saturday on their new material. 

"Some of our songs are written about people from back home — therefore, we thought it was best to get out of town to record them [the new songs]," Bowell said.

The Sunset Sinners start 2024 'With a Bang!'

Submitted JRI Hospitality&nbsp;is pleased to name Ken Stonebraker as its 2024 JRI Hall of Fame Recipient. The award will be officially bestowed upon the honoree at a reception held&nbsp;at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25&nbsp;at the Salina Country Club located at&nbsp;2101 E. Country Club Rd.

“We are extremely proud to name Ken Stonebraker as our&nbsp;2024 JRI Hall of Fame Recipient,” says Jason Ingermanson, founder and CEO of JRI Hospitality. “For decades, Mr. Stonebraker has made an outstanding impact on our community’s youth through education and sports. He continues to use his knowledge and talent to serve as a leader and to inspire others to take the lead.”&nbsp;

Ken Stonebraker has been immersed in the Salina community for decades, serving as a social studies teacher at Salina South High School from 1992 to 2007. During his tenure, he also served as the school’s assistant football coach (1992-1993), the assistant track coach (1994-2001), and the head football coach (1994-2007). From 2007 to 2022 he took on the role of athletic director.&nbsp;

Leading his teams to many victories throughout his career, Stonebraker has been recognized for his achievements by a multitude of organizations. He will be inducted into the Kansas Football Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in 2024 and was named Athletic Director of the Year and District 1 Athletic Director of the Year in 2016 by the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (KIAAA).

He served on the KIAAA Board of Directors from 2011 to 2015 and the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Board of Directors from 2016 to 2021. He also sat on the KSHSAA Football Committee on Contact Limitations in 2012 and the KSHSAA Classification Study Recommendation Committee in 2021.

The JRI Hall of Fame Award was developed to honor those who have made a significant contribution to youth sports and the Salina community as a whole. Recipients demonstrate a high level of leadership, teamwork,&nbsp;organization&nbsp;and accomplishment in inspiring the lives they touch.

JRI Hospitality Announces 2024 JRI Hall of Fame Recipient

Any dog owner will tell you that there is a decision to be made when selecting a new pet: Is it better to get a purebred dog or one that comes from a mixed genetic heritage?

For pet owners, the decision is more of a personal choice, but beef cattle producers make a similar decision, and there can be economic advantages offered by a crossbred animal, according to Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute experts.

<a href="https://%20https//ksubci.org/2024/01/19/building-your-own-herd-cross-breeding-bmr-corn-silage" target="_blank">Speaking on a recent Cattle Chat podcast</a>, beef cattle geneticist Bob Weaber said that maternal heterosis can offer a $100-$150 advantage in today’s market.

Maternal heterosis refers to the crossbred female’s increase in production over that of her parent breeds.

“The primary advantage of maternal heterosis is the extended lifetime productivity because crossbred cows last longer in the production system allowing them to have an additional calf in their lifetime as compared to a purebred female,” said Weaber, who also is head of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.southeast.k-state.edu/about/">Eastern Kansas Research and Extension Centers</a>.

Other advantages of maternal heterosis include reproduction, calf survivability, pounds of calf weaned and younger age at puberty. Weaber said because they have more calves in their lifetime, there is a decrease in replacement female costs to the herd.

According to Weaber, many commercial producers will follow a two-breed rotation in time, which means that they will change sires every few years.

“If you keep the replacement females from that mating in the herd, you can expect about one-half to two-thirds of the heterosis advantage of an F1 crossbred female,” Weaber said. He added that an F1 crossbred animal is the result of a mating between a sire and dam of two different breeds.

Cattle Chat: Economic advantage of crossbreeding systems

Late Tuesday evening, a Salina resident reported to Salina Police Department officers that someone stole their blue 1992 Chevrolet 2500 extended cab pick-up truck.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, an unknown suspect, stole the truck from the owner's residence between 6:30 and 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

"The vehicle was not running, but keys were in the vehicle," Feldman said. 

The currently unrecovered vehicle bears a Kansas tag that reads 177SGV, and Feldman said the owner and officers valued the truck at $1,500.

Today in History, Jan. 24

Last week, a 30-foot pull-behind camper went missing from a storage unit in the 400 block of North Ohio Street. According to the Salina Police Department, the owner reported the incident yesterday.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said someone stole the 2021 Transcend Xplor 231 RK RV between 9 and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17. 

"The camper was valued at $35,000 and taken from the unit by a white Ford F-250," Feldman said. "They [storage unit management] contacted the owner, a Salinan, who advised they did not take the camper from the unit."

Storage management staff contacted officers after they noticed the camper missing and talked to its owner. 

The RV has a Kansas tag that reads 567PKC. SPD officers are still investigating the theft.

According to the Salina Police Department, the owner reported the incident yesterday.SPD Capt. James Feldman said someone stole the 2021 Transcend Xplor 231 RK RV between 9 and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17. "The camper was valued at $35,000 and taken from the unit by a white Ford F-250," Feldman said. "They [storage unit management] contacted the owner, a Salinan, who advised they did not take the camper from the unit."Storage management staff contacted officers after they noticed the camper missing and talked to its owner. The RV has a Kansas tag that reads 567PKC. Saline County Jail Bookings, Jan. 23

Beginning Monday, January 22, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be working on replacing sections of roadway on Kenison Street between McAdams Road and East Wilson Street. Kenison Street will be closed to traffic during working hours and will be reopened to one-lane traffic during off hours.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within two weeks.

Kenison Street in Salina gets pavement repair

Two proclamation requests, a public hearing, changes to The City of Salina personnel manual, and possible approval of an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad Company are among the items on this week's Salina City Commission agenda.&nbsp;

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. What is a "Revitalization Area?"

In 1994, the Kansas Legislature passed a law allowing local communities to designate neighborhood revitalization areas within which certain incentives are created to encourage capital investment which otherwise might not occur in these areas of historic importance and are subject to physical deterioration and other economic challenges. The law also allows the designation of certain historical or significant individual structures to be eligible for incentives.

What land are we talking about?

Last year, the City Commission received a request from Agri-Center requesting an amendment to the City of Salina's Neighborhood Revitalization Plan boundary to incorporate their 5-acre site on West Old Highway 40 into NRA Area B along the North Broadway corridor and provided staff direction regarding preparing the plan amendments and presenting them to each of the other taxing entities within the community for their consideration and consent. 

Staff has completed drafting the map amendment and met with each of the taxing entities and secured their consent to the proposed boundary change. Consequently, it is now appropriate for the City Commission to hold the required public hearing as the final step in preparation for City Commission consideration of the updated 2024-
2029 Plan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

- Approve Resolution No. 24-8184 appointing a member to the Salina Community Economic Development Organization

- Authorize the City Manager to execute a Pipeline Crossing Agreement with Union Pacific Railroad Company (UPRR) for Pipeline Crossing of Railroad Property at Mile Post 495.75

Background: An existing six inch cast iron water main running parallel to Ash Street broke at the railroad crossing between Chicago Street and College Avenue. The existing pipe was installed in 1916 and did not include a casing pipe. A casing pipe allows for the removal and replacement of the existing water line under the railroad crossing without causing harm to the tracks or the railroad right-of way.

The proposed new 12-inch casing pipe is 100 feet long and the new water main will be inserted in the casing pipe and connected to the existing water main on each side of the railroad crossing. The agreement grants the City the right to construct, maintain, and operate the pipeline. In addition, the agreement defines the terms, provisions, conditions, and insurance requirements when work is performed in the railroad right-of-way.

- Authorize the purchase of a Type 1 Osage Ambulance remount on a new 2024 Ford F550 4X4 chassis for $203,840.00 from Emergency Services Supply, the authorized Osage Ambulance sales vendor for Kansas

-Approve Resolution No. 24-8183 amending and updating the City of Salina Personnel Manual

-Approve Resolution No. 24-8186 amending and approving the City Commission Agenda General Order of Business and City Commission Meeting Public Participation Policy document.

-Announce the Mayor's appointment of City Commissioners to Citizen Boards and Commissions

Authorize City staff preparation of a Special Assessment Engineering Feasibility Report for internal improvements serving the Overlook Estates Addition and authorize staff to design, acquire needed easements, prepare cost estimates and an engineering feasibility report, and construct an off-site water line extension serving the Overlook Estates Addition.

Salina Area Technical College announces fall honor roll

In the early morning hours on Saturday, a 24-year-old Salina resident crashed into the viaduct on the west side of North Broadway Avenue, and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman, the driver, Thomas A. Brandt, continued straight instead of properly navigating the curve in the road.

Brandt then crashed into a frozen creek bed, where first responders found him inside his 2005 Ford Mustang.

"A witness saw him go off the roadway," Feldman said. "The case is still being investigated, but it is believed speed and alcohol are determining factors."

Submitted In its 39th year of honoring the nation’s most elite high school athletes, Gatorade today announced Katelyn Rupe of Salina Central High School is the 2023-24 Gatorade Kansas Girls Cross Country Player of the Year.&nbsp; Rupe is the first Gatorade Kansas Girls Cross Country Player of the Year to be chosen from Salina Central High School.

The award, which celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community, distinguishes Rupe as Kansas’ best high school girls cross country player. From CEOs and coaches to star athletes, Gatorade Player of the Year winners showcase the power of sport, touting an all-star group of alumni that includes Irene Riggs (2022-23, 2021-22 &amp; 2020-21, Morgantown High School, Morgantown, W. Va.), Katelyn Tuohy (2019-20, 2018-19 &amp; 2017-18, North Rockland High School, Thiels, N.Y.) and Jordan Hasay (2008-09, Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, San Luis Obispo, Calif.).

The 5-foot-4 junior won her second straight Class 5A state meet this past season, breaking the tape with a time of 17:36.20. Ranked No. 40 nationally in the 2023 MileSplit 50, Rupe captured silver at the Nike Cross Heartland Regional, making her the state’s top prep girl in the race, and finished 28th at the NXN Final. The returning Gatorade Kansas Girls Cross Country Player of the Year, she also clocked a personal-best 17:05.90 to win the 2023 Bob Schmoekel XC Invitational. She will enter her senior year boasting a 14-3 career race record with her only losses coming at regional or national meets.

Rupe was a nominated attendee at the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership 4-day seminar last summer. An active member of her First Presbyterian Church youth group, she also participates in HOSA, a student-led organization that promotes career opportunities in the healthcare industry. She has also donated her time as a youth coach for the Salina Burn track club. “Katelyn Rupe didn’t lose to any Kansas runner in 2023,” said Rich Gonzalez of PrepCalTrack. “In fact, she has never lost to an in-state competitor in her career in cross country. Until she does, I suspect she’ll keep winning the Gatorade award.”

Rupe has maintained a weighted 4.06 GPA in the classroom. She will begin her senior year of high school this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track &amp; field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.

KSRE In case cabin fever has Kansas gardeners longing for warmer days, there’s good news: January marks an early opportunity to get some vegetables and flowers started.

“January is often a cold and dreary month for many gardeners,” said Cynthia Domenghini, a horticulture expert with K-State Research and Extension. “But planning for and starting vegetables and flower transplants from seed can make this a much more interesting time of year.”

Domenghini outlined the steps needed to purchase and plant seeds indoors in a recent issue of the Horticulture Newsletter, a weekly publication from Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://preview.web.k-state.edu/hnr-notused/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">that is available online</a>&nbsp;and by email.

Purchase recommended, quality seed.&nbsp;The varieties recommended for Kansas are available in a&nbsp;publication from K-State Research and Extension. “Also, talk to your neighbors, friends and your local garden center about what has worked well for them,” Domenghini said.

Obtain your seeds from a reputable source.&nbsp;These may include garden centers and seed catalogs. “If choosing seeds from a business that does not specialize in plants, pay special attention to the package date to make sure the seed was packaged for the current year,” Domenghini said. “Though most seed remains viable for about three years, germination decreases as seed ages.”

Determine the Date to Seed.&nbsp;You should know the target date for transplanting outside, and the number of weeks needed to grow the transplant indoors.&nbsp;. Sowing seed.&nbsp;Do not use garden soil to germinate seed. It is too heavy and may contain disease organisms. Use a media made especially for seed germination.

Domenghini said additional tips include keeping seed moist, and growing the seeds in appropriate lighting and temperature conditions. A little TLC also helps, she said.

“Plants react to movement,” Domenghini said. “Brushing over the plants with your hand stimulates them to become more stocky and less leggy. Try 20 brushing strokes per day. However, brushing will not compensate for a lack of light or over-crowding.”
