The Salina Fire Department is proud to announce the graduation of four exceptional fire cadets and the addition of an experienced lateral transfer to its ranks. The graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 2:30 PM at the Salina Fire Station #1, 222 W. Elm St.

According to SFD, these cadets have successfully completed an intensive training program, including fire suppression techniques, emergency medical response, hazardous materials handling, and community fire safety education.

The Salina Fire Department is also delighted to welcome Firefighter Paramedic Kenneth Ricardez, who joins the department with five years of experience in the fire and emergency medical service.

Cadets with the SFD have shown remarkable dedication and resilience throughout their training. They are now prepared to face the challenges and rewards of a career in fire service.

SFD said it is equally excited to have Kenneth Ricardez join us and bring his experience and skills to our department. The graduation ceremony will symbolize the official entry of these cadets into the Salina Fire Department family.

Family members, friends, and civic leaders are invited to join the SFD in celebrating this momentous occasion.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 2

Early Friday morning, May 31, Salina Region Health Center staff treated a Salina resident for a significant eye injury — the victim said that someone hit him in the face with a pipe.

At 2 a.m., Salina Police Department (SPD) officers reported to the local hospital and took the 65-year-old man's account of the incident.

SPD Capt. Mike Miller said the victim reported driving to a residence in the 100 block of Taylor Court to meet with a woman, but when he knocked on the door, no one answered.

The man then returned to his blue Chevrolet Venture, and while sitting outside the home, a man approached him outside demanding answers.

"A gentleman [alleged suspect] came around between some houses... and said, 'Why are you here? What are you doing there?'" Miller said. "The white unknown male hit him [the victim] in the face with a blunt object. He thought it might be a pipe."

Miller said the alleged aggravated battery happened sometime between 1:45 a.m. and 2 a.m. The victim then drove himself to the hospital for treatment.

The victim reported some details and was then transported to the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 1

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

The city of Salina has 28 unique parks, with more than 1,000 acres of parkland across town, and Indian Rock Park is one of the city's first.

Situated next to the horseshoe-shaped Lower Smoky Hill River Falls in town, Indian Rock Park stands as a pillar to history just before Salina's founding in 1858.

This park has a 1.2-mile nature trail with very scenic overlooks, including one that overlooks the rock the park is named after. Tradition says the rock marks the site of the Battle of Indian Rock in 1857, the last significant skirmish between the Kansa, Delaware and Potawatomi Native nations.&nbsp;

Throughout the 1800s, various Native American groups lived in the region now known as Kansas. The federal government moved displaced Native Americans from the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes region to reservations in eastern Kansas.

Many Native Nations comprise the nomadic bands of people who made their homes in and around Salina, including the Pawnee, Kaw, Kiowa and Arapaho, but other Native Nations called the Great Plains their homes by the mid to late 1800s.

Central Kansas was home to most Great Plains Native Nations' hunting grounds, with the Smoky Hill River providing a vital source of fresh water to the nomadic communities.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the Smoky Hills and Salina region was a crossroads providing food and water sources for migrating animals like bison. This caused conflict between Native hunting parties east of the Salina region and hunting parties west of Salina.

In 1857, the Battle of Indian Rock took place right here in Salina between the Great Plains Native Nations and the Eastern Kansas Native Nations.

While many different tribes lived in what would become Kansas, these tribes participated in the Battle of Indian Rock, according to records from the Smoky Hill Museum.

Eastern Kansas Native Nations: Kaw Pottawatomie Delaware

Great Plains Native Nations: Cheyenne Arapahoe Sioux

Christina Campbell, one of the first settlers in Salina, recalls the story as told to her by the Native Delaware peoples:

"The Delawares and Pottawatomies were on a big hunt some 200 miles west of Salina and were surprised and attacked by a powerful force of Cheyennes, Sioux, and Arapahoes. They were driven back in a running fight to Dry Creek, just west of Salina. Ere they sent runners for the Kaws, who had two large hunting parties nearby.

The wild Indians finally drove the civilized tribes out of cover of the "Dry" creek, with great loss. They fell back across the river to the hill east of Salina, where they were reinforced by the two bands of Kaws with some rifles they had secured at their reservation at Council Grove.

Here the Cheyennes attacked riding in circles, while others, hidden in the grass, were shooting arrows at the civilized Indians, who sought the shelter of the rocks. Behind the great rock itself, the Kaws, who had rifles, were doing good work at short range.

The Cheyenne chief finally drew back, and with a large number of warriors, charged the rock cavalry style, even though the Cheyenne were outnumbered. He made five successive charges, each at a great loss. Upon the final charge, he was killed, leaving a fearful toll of dead and wounded in his own ranks, without inflicting great damage to his foes.

At length, badly beaten, the wild tribes withdrew, leaving the ground covered by their dead."

William A. Phillips, one of Salina's town founders, told this story in the Junction City Union newspaper on May 7, 1857:

"As the buffalos were scarce east of the line of the Saline and Solomon, they crossed the threatened "deadline" and were camped on the spot where the old graveyard stood and between the mounds of the upper mill. The Cheyennes who were then camped near Cow Creek, learned of the intrusion, and as they at that time maintained a little army of soldiers, some three hundred picked men, most of this force was sent against this band of Pottawatomie hunters. The Cheyenne warriors came in on the ridge that skirts the bend of the Smoky to the southeast, coming down over the upper hill, and attacked just as the day was breaking. It was a surprise and a massacre rather than a fight. A few of the Pottawatomie warriors seized their rifles and tried to hold their enemies in check, while the others fled north across the Smoky Hill River. In the attack one woman and two children were killed, besides a number of men. The precise loss of the Pottawatomies has been variously stated, but fourteen in all were buried on the hill near the spot where they were encamped."

Later, leaders of the City of Salina saw the significance of the site, and planners dedicated the area to the historic site and founded it as a city park, all surrounding the large rock formation on its trail.

OTTAWA&nbsp; COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7p.m. Friday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Dodge Durango driven by Matthew Steven&nbsp;Greiner, 24, Ottawa, was northbound in the 900 Block of Eisenhower Road one half mile south of Kansas 68.

The vehicle traveled&nbsp; off the roadway to the right and struck a bridge culvert. EMS transported&nbsp;Greiner to Advent Health in Ottawa. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter

After much discussion and consideration, the Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter has decided to dissolve the organization.

The organization will no longer actively participate in Salina Animal Services activities as of June 28, 2024.

The Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter will hold its last public food give away on June 9.  Aluminum can collection sites will be taken over by the American Legion Honor Flights for Veterans on June 17. The Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter will continue taking low-income medical/spay/neuter applications until June 28 or until funds are depleted.

There are multiple reasons why the Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter decided to dissolve its program. The organization listed the reasons via a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FSAS.Salina.KS/">Facebook post</a>. The reasons are listed below.

⦁ The services FSAS has provided to the Salina community require considerable time expenditures.  The lion's share of which is being carried by a handful of members. Already existing time constraints, its shrinking volunteer base, and the inability to train new volunteers makes for an overwhelming responsibility on a few key members.

⦁ The deteriorating relationship with the shelter in the last few years has resulted in a much-reduced membership within the organization.  As animal lovers, departing volunteers no longer felt that they were contributing to the care and welfare of the animals.

⦁ FSAS received some volunteer applications over the last six months,  but we were unable to train new volunteers due to the shelter's lack of commitment to a training program.

⦁&nbsp; The City of Salina is requiring volunteers to sign a new waiver agreement that would release the city of all responsibility in the event of injury to a volunteer.  Legal counsel advised us not to sign the waiver as written.  So far the city has refused to make amendments to the waiver that would make it acceptable to the organization.  

The organization's volunteers have dedicated many hours contributing to various activities that include:  fostering, socializing cats, walking dogs, helping with transports, finding rescues, grooming dogs, cleaning kennels, doing laundry, mowing, shoveling snow,  off-site adopting events, working fund-raisers, promoting animal shelter activities, updating intake photographs, working with potential adopters, cleaning Petco kennels, and assisting in the spay neuter clinic.  

The FSAS would like to express its appreciation to its membership over the past 18 years for the love and dedication they have shown the animals at the Salina Animal Shelter.  Thank you also to the Salina community for their monetary donations that have enabled us to help so many of the animals in the city and county. 

The community's generous donations totaling approximately $250,000 over the past years have assisted us in helping thousands of local pets in need.   We regret the gap in financial assistance the dissolution of Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter will cause in the community. FSAS volunteers' hearts remain with the pet families in Saline County.

Hello and happy Friday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

If you’re looking for an excuse to hit the links for a good cause be sure to join Kansas Wesleyan University for the return of the Coyote Cup on Friday, June 21, at the Salina Country Club.

The entry fee of $150 per person, or $600 per team, covers greens and cart fees, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, hole prizes and the meal following the event in the Salina Country Club ballroom

Funds raised from this year's Coyote Cup will go to help fund the full remodel of the Everett Morgan Strength Training Center inside the Student Activities Center on campus.

Thursday also saw the release of many state baseball and softball all-league and all-state teams across the state of Kansas and our four state contenders were well-represented

Southeast of Saline softball got four members on the NCAA all-league first team with Bryan Baird, Brielle Ptacek, Maddie Harris and Lexi Jacobson all making the cut, the Lady Trojans also got Kimber Ogorzolka and Abby Wyatt onto the list as honorable mentions

On a larger scale Abilene’s Stocton Timbrook and Heath Hoekman were each named to KSHSAAs all-state teams in Class 4A, joining Sacred Heart’s Evan Bogart from Class 2A, and from 5A Salina South’s Brady Howard and Kaden Budke, as well as Salina Central’s Gunner Gross.

910 KINA Headlines — May 31

Abilene is preparing to welcome a captivating new exhibit to its cultural scene. The "See Kansas" exhibit will be showcased at the Abilene Public Library from June 1 to August 7.

"We are truly excited to be able to display the "See Kansas" exhibit in the Jordan Room at the library this summer," said Library Director Wendy Moulton. "Our 2024 Summer Reading theme for all ages is Adventure Begins at Your Library, and the travel poster-inspired art on display will encourage everyone to enjoy and explore our wonderful state and community."

Produced by Parks and Green Spaces&nbsp;Art Projects, the exhibit features the work of nine artists from across the state, celebrating iconic and historic Kansas landscapes. Among these is the latest addition, "See Abilene," highlighting many aspects that contribute to Abilene being recognized as the Best Historic Small Town.

"The "See Kansas" Art Project spotlights some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the state," says Mary Gage, director of the project. "Nine Kansas artists were challenged to channel the beloved style of the National Parks Posters of the 1930s and '40s and produce unique new images for Kansans of favorite Kansas places. We're looking forward to sharing the exhibit of the artwork, as well as the new "See Abilene" poster, created in a similar style, with the community of Abilene this summer."

Visitors are encouraged to attend a special sneak peek unveiling of the "See Abilene" at the Abilene Public Library on Thursday, May 30, at 4 p.m.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with the Abilene Public Library and Parks and Green Spaces to bring this series to our community," said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director. "The "See Kansas" series pieces are beautiful, and we're proud to add 'See Abilene' to its collection."

Copies of the "See Abilene" piece will be available for purchase at the Abilene Visitors Center.&nbsp;

Discover Kansas through art — "See Kansas" Exhibit opens in Abilene

The City of Salina’s Water Department office will be closed at noon on Friday, June 7, for a billing system switchover. It will also be closed on Monday, June 10 and Tuesday, June 11, and will reopen on Wednesday, June 12, at 8 a.m. with the new, upgraded billing system. During this time, no water bill payments will be accepted by phone, online or in person. 

“Water customers can expect changes that make their bill easier to read and provide more user-friendly options,” said Susan Watt, Water Customer Accounting Supervisor for the City of Salina.

The new water billing system will offer several new features for a better customer experience. A new bill style will include all current information plus more in a new, clean-cut format. The new system will also offer text alerts for interested customers and a portal to track water usage. 

The account number format will change from 12345-6789 to 123456789. Customers currently enrolled in autopay will need to re-register. A video highlighting the upcoming changes is available on YouTube at <a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/EbXawlTi6Xk.">https://youtu.be/EbXawlTi6Xk</a>.

Water bill payments can be made in several ways:

- In-person in Room 102 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street

City of Salina announces water department closure June 7-11

On May 31, 1889, some 2,200 people in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, perished when the South Fork Dam collapsed, sending 20 million tons of water rushing through the town.

🎙King in the Community Podcast — Susan Eberwein, Artyopolis coordinator

Dawn Wolf, today, filed to run for the Kansas House of Representatives, District 107. Wolf is a sixth-generation Kansan and a lifelong Republican. She works as an online coordinator for Bennington High School, USD 240, and is currently serving her second term as an Ottawa County Commissioner.  

House District 107 includes Mitchell and Ottawa counties as well as parts of Cloud and Saline counties.

"As a county commissioner, I've seen first-hand rural communities struggle with recruiting industry, creating jobs, and building affordable housing," said Wolf. "I'll be a champion for local control and will work on issues that will improve the quality of life in rural Kansas."

Wolf and her husband, Tim, have been married for 43 years and have four children and nine grandchildren. They attend Bennington Bible Church. Wolf is an active volunteer with many local organizations. 

"Our district is rooted in conservative Kansas values and I will fight to ensure they are represented in Topeka," said Wolf. 

The seat is currently held by Rep. Susan Concannon. The Primary Election is Tuesday, August 6th and the General Election is Tuesday, November 5.
