The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary and vehicle theft at a residence in the 4900 block of East North Street. The theft occurred between 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday while the homeowners were at work.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, the homeowner left for work at 7 a.m. but realized at 12:30 p.m. that the house alarm system had not been set. Although the house was unlocked, she activated the alarm remotely using her phone.

"When she came home after work, she came into the house and saw some muddy footprints in the kitchen. Then she walked around the bedroom and saw some shoes that were disturbed," Soldan said. "The only thing they can see missing from the house is a Walther PP .22 pistol valued at $300."

The homeowner also reported the theft of a white 1991 Jeep Renegade with a black top, valued at $5,000, from the shed.

Soldan said the burglary and vehicle theft may be connected to a Salina Police Department (SPD) pursuit the previous night. 

Soldan said the pursuit ended with a suspect abandoning a vehicle about a quarter mile from the residence where the Jeep Renegade was stolen. Soldan said it is possible that the suspect took shelter in the area before burglarizing the residence.&nbsp;

SPD Cpt. James Feldman said the pursuit began at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday when an officer attempted to stop a white 2005 Nissan Maxima for speeding in the 400 block of North Santa Fe.

"The vehicle fled eastbound on East North Street, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph and running multiple stop signs," Feldman said. "The pursuit continued into the county."

After the suspect pulled into a driveway in the 700 block of North Cunningham, he left the vehicle.&nbsp;The driver fled on foot and was not located. 

According to Feldman, a 28-year-old female from Salina, who was a passenger in the Nissan, remained in the vehicle and was not charged with any crimes.&nbsp;

Sheriff Soldan noted that the pursuit ended about a quarter mile from the residence where the burglary occurred. It is possible the suspect took shelter in the area before committing the crime.

Feldman said a possible suspect has been identified, but no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

UPDATED: SPD releases details of vehicle pursuit possibly linked to Saline Co. burglary

K-State Technology Development Institute

Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.k-state.edu/tdi">Technology Development Institute</a>&nbsp;provided design and prototyping assistance to Vortex Coatings to help bring a new applicator to the market just in time to display at the world's largest automotive tradeshow.

Vortex Coatings is a Salina-based company that produces high-performance coatings for a wide range of industrial, agricultural and automotive industry applications, including coatings for truck bed liners to protect the inside of the bed and prevent objects from sliding around. Vortex sells the coating materials and the equipment used to apply the coatings.

When the company was acquired and moved to Salina, the original equipment design was also transferred. As the new owners began talking with their dealer network, they began identifying several areas of improvement on the applicator design for a simpler and more user-friendly process for those applying the coatings.

The Vortex team reached out to the Technology Development Institute at K-State to determine if the engineering staff would be able to assist them with developing new ideas to help improve the functionality of the application system.

"The team at K-State has been great to work with from our initial contact with them, said Peter Browning, general manager of Vortex Coatings. "They made the trip over to Salina to look at our operation and equipment and took the time to understand what we were trying to accomplish and the timeline that we were up against. We were able to engage engineering students to help with our virtual modeling, and then TDI was able to produce prototypes for testing and sales displays on-site in a very timely manner. Working with them has been a great experience for our organization."

The new applicator design was completed and tested just in time for Vortex to take the prototypes to the world's largest automotive tradeshow — SEMA in Las Vegas — to feature as a new product introduction for the company. The new applicators are much more ergonomic and allow material to flow and spray better than the previous systems.

This project was completed in support of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/">K-State 105</a>&nbsp;initiative, Kansas State University's answer to the call for comprehensive economic growth and advancement solutions for Kansas.

The K-State Technology Development Institute in the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://engg.k-state.edu/">Carl R. Ice College of Engineering</a>&nbsp;is a U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration University Center and received a grant from the Research and Entrepreneurship Federal Matching Grant Dollars Fund.

TDI provides a broad range of engineering and business development services to both private industry and university researchers to advance the commercial readiness of new products or technologies.

K-State helps Vortex Coatings develop new applicator

A fierce desire to know how things work pushed Dinah Roth towards a career in mechanics and an exciting encounter with aviation sealed her budding career.

“I love taking things apart, figuring out how they work, and putting them back together,” said the 22-year-old from Ottawa County.

“I got interested in planes at 15,” Roth said.

Now working as an apprentice at 1 Vision Aviation at Salina Regional Airport, her sights are on aviation, specifically becoming certified and working as an airframe and power plant mechanic.

“It’s been a dream of mine for a while, and now I’m living it,” Roth said. “Every day is a new adventure.”

Her journey began Jan. 29 as one of nine students in the inaugural Aviation Innovation and Maintenance pre-apprenticeship program — AIM for short.

Upon graduation March 7, when Roth and eight others received their micro-credentials, she and four classmates joined the 1 Vision program, the next step to A&amp;P status, or other levels, including aircraft painting.

Through this year, AIM, a Salina Airport Authority program, has sent four cohorts — 22 students total, 21 of whom graduated — through the six-week course. The fifth cohort began Oct. 28. It is the first class to be based in the new AIM Center in Hangar 626.

“It’s going very well,” said Shelli Swanson, the SAA’s director of administration and finance.

“We stood up this program very swiftly and were fortunate to get the $3.325 million ALOFT Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce,” she said.

ALOFT stands for Advanced Learning Opportunities for Training.

“That (grant) has allowed us to procure the necessary equipment, hire instructors, develop the curriculum and the marketing program,” Swanson said. “The main challenge is raising awareness about the program and educating potential students on the opportunities it offers.”

AIM “started off great,” said Jim Sponder, CEO of 1Vision Aviation, a maintenance, repair and overhaul firm at Salina, that also provides aircraft painting services.

The company operates in the 130,000-square-foot Hangar 959, a.k.a. Big Bertha, at Salina Regional Airport and Airport Industrial Center, and does aircraft painting in Hangar 606. The company also has a division in a 32,000 square foot hangar at Sioux City, Iowa’s Gateway Airport.

Interest in 1 Vision services in Salina was high from its ribbon cutting in September 2019 and has continued to expand. The Salina roster contains roughly 250 workers, and needs to grow fast.

“I could take 100 people today. We need A&amp;P’s and painters,” Sponder said. “The demand’s skyrocketing.”

Joining the industry is easy, Swanson said.

“You don’t have to have any aviation-related experience, or know a fuselage from a cockpit,” she said. “(AIM) is allowing students to experience a trade that is off their radar.”

The airport authority, and partners, such as Kansas State University at Salina, the Salina Community Economic Development Organization, and the chamber, are including more than one demographic and age group in their search for workers.

“We’re also pursuing as potential students, those transitioning from military to civilian life, targeting the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley,” Swanson said.

Thanks to the ALOFT grant, and tuition assistance from the Skill Bridge program for transitioning military, help from Kansas Workforce One, a state employment agency covering 62 counties, the cost has been held down to $200 per student. They are also gifted with a set of tools necessary for the first level of certification each student seeks — among them A&amp;P Mechanics, Aviation Maintenance Technicians, and aircraft paint preppers.

“We are working behind the scenes to secure additional funding from state grants and private scholarships,” she said.

Scott Thomas, an A&amp;P, and the former head of the 1 Vision painting division, praised the AIM program.

“It’s a way to have a career without having to go into debt,” he said.

While family issues have forced Thomas to move closer to home in Mississippi, he pledged “to promote the AIM program wherever I’m at.”

The AIM course first teaches basic aviation maintenance vocabulary, then sheet metal and composition, avionics/electronics, and aircraft coatings, a.k.a. paint.

“The last week is industry week, where we take students up and down the flight line,” Swanson said.

They will visit 1Vision, Schilling Aviation Services, K-State-Salina’s A&amp;P program, and Garmin International.

“All of those are future employers or higher learning institutions,” she said. “Their last day is graduation, where they receive their K-State-Salina micro-credentials.”

These days, Dinah Roth works in 1 Vision’s Avionics Department, learning more about aircraft maintenance every day.

“The 1 Vision mechanics in class gave me a step up. They were my mentors,” she said. “AIM gave me those contacts. A lot of things I didn’t really know about, made we want to work in it, giving me a deeper curiosity.”

Roth will remain an apprentice until she receives her airframe license in 13 to 14 months.

“I will take all my training records to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration),” she said.

Officials will determine if Roth is ready to test for her airframe certificate, and then her power plant certification. She also has the option of finishing her training in college.

“There is a closeness there. I’m very happy to be part of the club,” Roth said. “I’ve never done this before, but I’m getting the textbook and the helping hands from experienced workers at the same time.”

They are also gifted with a set of tools necessary for the first level of certification each student seeks — among them A&amp;P Mechanics, Aviation Maintenance Technicians, and aircraft paint preppers.“We are working behind the scenes to secure additional funding from state grants and private scholarships,” she said.Scott Thomas, an A&amp;P, and the former head of the 1 Vision painting division, praised the AIM program.“It’s a way to have a career without having to go into debt,” he said.While family issues have forced Thomas to move closer to home in Mississippi, he pledged “to promote the AIM program wherever I’m at.”The AIM course first teaches basic aviation maintenance vocabulary, then sheet metal and composition, avionics/electronics, and aircraft coatings, a.k.a. paint.“The last week is industry week, where we take students up and down the flight line,” Swanson said.They will visit 1Vision, Schilling Aviation Services, K-State-Salina’s A&amp;P program, and Garmin International.“All of those are future employers or higher learning institutions,” she said. “Their last day is graduation, where they receive their K-State-Salina micro-credentials.”These days, Dinah Roth works in 1 Vision’s Avionics Department, learning more about aircraft maintenance every day.“The 1 Vision mechanics in class gave me a step up. They were my mentors,” she said. “AIM gave me those contacts. A lot of things I didn’t really know about, made we want to work in it, giving me a deeper curiosity.”Roth will remain an apprentice until she receives her airframe license in 13 to 14 months.“I will take all my training records to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration),” she said.Officials will determine if Roth is ready to test for her airframe certificate, and then her power plant certification. She also has the option of finishing her training in college.“There is a closeness there. I’m very happy to be part of the club,” Roth said. “I’ve never done this before, but I’m getting the textbook and the helping hands from experienced workers at the same time.”

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA), and AAA Kansas are offering safety tips to help drivers navigate these risks and know what to do in case of a collision.

“With the breeding season here and as last year’s offspring begin to establish new home ranges, we expect a significant increase in deer movement,” said Jessica Ward, KDWP Communications Manager. “During the rut, Kansans should remain vigilant, especially during dusk and dawn when deer are more likely to be found on or near roadways.”

Although most vehicle-deer collisions do not result in serious injuries, KDOT data from 2023 shows that seven people were killed, and 658 were injured in such incidents across the state. In Saline County alone, there were 165 deer-related vehicle accidents in 2023.

“If a deer enters the roadway in front of your vehicle, it’s safest to hit the animal rather than swerve to avoid it,” said KHP Captain Candice Breshears. “Swerving can lead to more dangerous situations, including losing control, leaving the road, or veering into oncoming traffic.”

To stay safe on the roads, drivers are urged to be extra alert at dawn and dusk when deer are most active. If you see one deer, expect others, as they often travel in groups. Reduce speed and be vigilant near wooded areas, parks, golf courses, and water sources. Deer crossing signs indicate areas with high rates of vehicle-deer collisions, so extra caution is advised in those areas.

It is important not to swerve to avoid hitting a deer, as that can result in a more serious crash, potentially involving other vehicles or objects off the road.

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure children are in appropriate safety seats. Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic, and scan for the reflective eyes of deer along the roadway.

If a collision occurs, move your vehicle to the shoulder and call law enforcement. For KHP, dial *47, for KTA dial *KTA, or call 911. Stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened, as this provides better protection in the event of a secondary collision.

“Not only can a collision cause inconvenience while your vehicle is being repaired, but without comprehensive auto insurance, the repair costs could put a serious dent in your wallet," Steward said.&nbsp;

In 2023, the average claim for an animal strike in Kansas was $8,287, a 19% increase from the previous year. The rising cost is attributed to new vehicle technologies, such as cameras and sensors, that drive up repair expenses.

Drivers are reminded to report any collision resulting in $1,000 or more in property damage or personal injury to the nearest law enforcement agency. To remove a deer carcass from the scene, a salvage tag must be obtained from KDWP game wardens, sheriff’s deputies, or KHP troopers.

Vibrant, the mental health company that administers Kansas’ 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, reported a one-day call record of 169 calls on Nov. 6, said ​​Cara Sloan-Ramos, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

The largest increases in call volumes occurred on the LGBTQ+ and Spanish lines, Sloan-Ramos said.

President-elect Donald Trump has promised upon taking office a crackdown on immigration, especially undocumented Mexican and Latin and Central American immigrants, through mass deportation. Plus, GOP gains in the Kansas Legislature open up&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/02/anti-lgbtq-bills-introduced-in-kansas-legislature-are-political-bullying-tactic-activists-say/">new opportunities</a>&nbsp;for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

“One of the things we know about suicide and suicidal behavior is that it is rarely connected to one circumstance but instead is most often a result of multiple factors, so correlation doesn’t exactly indicate causation,” Sloan-Ramos said in an email.

The statewide hotline received an average of 67 calls per day in November 2023 and about 53 calls daily in November 2022, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.khi.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/988-Broad-State-Metrics-Report__KS_NA_to_2024-02-29.pdf" target="_blank">da</a><a href="https://www.khi.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/988-Broad-State-Metrics-Report__KS_2022-01-01_to_2023-01-31.pdf" target="_blank">ta</a>&nbsp;from Vibrant.

Salina Symphony & Ballet Salina presents 'The Nutcracker' Dec. 14 & 15

SMITH COUNTY –&nbsp;A man was convicted and sentenced in Smith County&nbsp; following a Kansas Bureau of Investigation case, according to a media release from the agency.

Smith County Attorney, Tabitha Owen, announced that a Smith County man 29-year-old Colter J. Ducote has been sentenced to seven presumptive life sentences after being convicted by a jury on seven counts of Jessica’s Law child sexual abuse charges. 

On Aug. 12, 2024, a Smith County jury trial convened and concluded on Aug. 14, 2024 with the guilty verdict.&nbsp;

The case was investigated by the KBI after a request for assistance from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office on July 24, 2023. A Special Agent assigned to the KBI West Child Victims Unit led the investigation regarding allegations that Ducote had committed the sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14. Ducote was convicted of seven counts of child sexual abuse, including; rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The victim was 11 years old when she reported the sexual abuse by Ducote beginning at the age of six.

On October 31, Ducote was sentenced to a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years-to-life on each of the seven counts of conviction; two counts will be served consecutively for a mandatory term of 50 years-to-life.

Kansas man sentenced for child sex crimes

A Salina Police Department (SPD) SWAT operation tied to a Topeka Police Department (TPD) homicide investigation led to the discovery of a significant amount of drugs, including MDMA and marijuana.

On November 11, SPD's SWAT team executed a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of North College in Salina at the request of the TPD, which is investigating a homicide that occurred in its jurisdiction.&nbsp;

SPD found packaging materials alongside more than a pound of marijuana and approximately 1,000 pills of suspected MDMA or ecstasy. SPD arrested Damari Owens, 19, of Salina. He is facing charges including possession with intent to distribute controlled substances (marijuana and MDMA), possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, no Kansas drug tax stamp, and endangering a child.

Feldman said the requested charge of child endangerment was added after SPD discovered a two-year-old child was living in the room where the drugs were found.

The initial search warrant, requested by TPD, for the North College Avenue residence is connected to a reported homicide that occurred in Topeka earlier this week.&nbsp;

On Sunday, November 10, at around 9 a.m., TPD officers responded to a shooting in the 1200 block of SW Huntoon Street in Topeka. Upon arrival, two individuals were located with life-threatening injuries. One was pronounced deceased on scene by medical personnel, and the other was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

According to a statement from TPD, this marks the 17th homicide investigation of 2024. TPD has not said whether or not Owens is a suspect in the ongoing Topeka homicide investigation.&nbsp;

SPD SWAT uncovers drugs during search linked to Topeka homicide investigation

The Salina Police Department (SPD) is investigating a medical incident that occurred at South High School on Tuesday, resulting in two male students, ages 14 and 16, being transported to the hospital.&nbsp;

According to SPD Cpt. James Feldman, officers were called to the school at approximately 11 a.m. on Nov. 12 after two students began experiencing elevated heart rates and chest pain while on school property. The high school resource officer and EMS responded, and the students were taken to Salina Regional Health Center for further evaluation.

The cause of the medical incident remains unknown. Feldman addressed rumors circulating online about a possible fentanyl connection, saying that the claims are premature and not based in fact.

“We cannot confirm anything until we receive more medical information,” Feldman said.&nbsp;

The investigation is ongoing, with officers working alongside the school to determine what led to the incident. SPD did not share any additional details about the students’ conditions.&nbsp;

Two Salina South High students hospitalized after medical incident; investigation ongoing

Humanities Kansas recently awarded $10,146 to Salina Media Connection in Salina to support “Minersville: The Town, the Mines, the People, the Legacy,” a documentary film that explores the history of Minersville, a town once occupied by nearly 500 residents and miners spread over 320 acres north of Concordia, Kansas. Greg Stephens serves as project director.

Minersville’s lignite coal was widely utilized by early homesteaders and businesses in a nearly 75-mile radius from 1869 through the 1920s and the last mine closed in 1940. Twenty-eight mines once operated in the area during this time. When railroads arrived and brought in better bituminous and anthracite coal from eastern areas, the mining market tapered off and eventually closed.

The Minersville mining area is privately owned by Tana Trost and sons Conrad and Justin, who have preserved the area and whose ancestors originally homesteaded in the area. Other landowners are Wyatt Trost, Larry and Dennis Jackson and Leland Bray.

Sponsors for the project include the Cloud County Community Foundation and Republic County Community Foundation, Kristin and John Gunn, and other private supporters including Jenny Russell, Republic County Economic Development.

Salina Media Connection’s vison is “To create a difference through media.” They have formed Burning Prairie Production group to produce the documentary in association with Method Productions, Wichita. The group includes Greg Stephens, avocation archaeologist Debi Aaron, author and former Bethany College instructor Tom Fleming who teamed up to present multiple talks about Minersville in 2017.

 Other members of the group include K-State-Salina’s Professor Emerita Pat Ackerman and Dr. Bill Genereux, former Republic County Historical Museum curator Dr. Ed Glenn, Salina Media Connection’s Paul Kirkwood and Ted Pugh. The film will feature local interviews, photos, artifacts, and a walking tour of Minersville with researcher Debi Aaron. 

When completed, the documentary will hold film premiers in the spring of 2025 in Concordia, Belleville and Salina. Dates to be announced.&nbsp;

“This project gives us a unique opportunity to bring the human experience of the past into the present day,” said Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas Executive Director. “Learning more about the people who lived in Minersville will allow the heritage of the area to be documented for many to learn from and enjoy.”

Salina Media Connection receives Humanities Kansas grant

Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) is offering a Youth Mental Health First Aid training session on Tuesday, November 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CKMHC Crossroads Building at 800 Elmhurst Blvd in Salina.

This skills-based training is designed for parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, and health and human services workers. 

Participants will learn how to identify, understand, and respond to adolescents ages 12–18 who may be experiencing mental health challenges or substance use issues.

What Youth Mental Health First Aid Covers

• Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).

Most Democrats and Never-Trump Republicans thought so.

After all, Trump won by the slimmest of margins in a few pivotal swing states and lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million. Then Trump’s tenure in the White House was marked by historically low public approval. And his sagging popularity was key to the crushing defeat in 2020.

The MAGA coalition always posed a significant challenge.

 </figure>While it supported Trump unconditionally, the group constantly battled against public rebuke and narrow appeal. Moreover, it’s demographic characteristics, which skew male, rural and non-college, are typically obstacles for sustained political engagement. Frequently dismissed as racist deplorables, misogynists, weird, phobic, low-information, threats to democracy, supporters of a fascist, and more recently garbage, the MAGA-hat-wearing voters could never be the foundation of an expansive electoral coalition.Yet, Trump’s sweeping victory last week proved a broad coalition could be constructed around working-class voting blocks, stitched skillfully together by populist appeals and reinforced by widespread economic anxiety.Successful presidential candidates in fact grow their base rather than being limited by it.Trump assembled a surprisingly diverse set of supporters, netting Republican gains in most counties across the nation, flipping all 7 battleground states, winning the popular vote, and taking back Congress. In big cities, suburbs, rural areas, in red states and in blue, Trump’s margins improved. The trend cut across demographic categories, with pronounced changes in Latino communities. In 2012, Mitt Romney won 27 percent of Latino voters. In 2024, Trump won 42 percent.Trump’s performance among the working class improved as well.In 2020, Trump edged Biden’s working-class support by 4 points. This time it tripled to 12-points.Among the white working-class, Trump enjoyed a 25-point margin over Biden. Against Harris, it rose to 30. Trump’s electoral influence also reached Kansas, where most counties shifted right.In southern Republican strongholds like Cherokee (+2.7%), and the much larger Sedgwick (+1.6%), Trump’s margins advanced. They also improved in the blue college town counties of Douglas (+1.2%) and Riley (+3.3%).In the western counties where Latinos constitute a majority, Trump saw significant growth. Ford county improved 3 percent, Finney 6 percent, Seward 5 percent, and Grant 4 percent.In short, the 2024 election was a uniform swing for Trump that showcased a new Republican coalition, one that approaches the diversity typically seen within the Democratic party.However, it would be a mistake to overreact and claim that a lasting realignment has taken place.It was a close election. The margin of victory in Wisconsin was 0.9%, 1.4% in Michigan, and 2.1% in Pennsylvania.Keeping the coalition together will be difficult. Latinos are the new swing voters. And not long ago, Barack Obama drew a large share of the white working class.Circumstances change quickly and future developments could very well benefit Democrats.Finally, Trump’s opponents repeatedly claimed he was a danger to democracy.Perhaps.But Trump is also a vivid expression of it.He forged and expanded a unique coalition, harnessing the strength of the very democratic institutions that his critics argue he wishes to destroy.It was no fluke.The views and opinions expressed in this opinion article are those of the author and do not reflect the official policy or position of Salina Post or Eagle Communications.
