Saline County Jail Bookings, June 5

Early Monday morning, June 3, a joint operation between the local Drug Task Force and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) found more than three pounds of various types of drugs in a local residence.

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman, at about 9 a.m., the Drug Task Force and KBI served a search warrant at a home in Central Salina and found evidence of several types of drugs.

"In reference to a joint investigation, located was approximately a pound of hallucinogenic mushrooms, over two pounds of miscellaneous marijuana products, over three grams of suspected methamphetamine and a large quantity of paraphernalia," Feldman said. "Arrested was Kristoff Lindgren, a 33-year-old male of Salina."

Officers arrested Lindgren and requested charges for the distribution of a hallucinogenic, distribution of marijuana, distribution of methamphetamines, a count of use of a communication facility and the commission of a felony drug crime, unlawful drug proceeds, felony paraphernalia and a paraphernalia misdemeanor.

"Some cash was found, but I don't have those numbers right now," Feldman said. "It was a long day."

Feldman said the Drug Task Force and KBI had worked on this investigation for some time. Officers jointly continue to investigate the crime.

Drug Task Force, KBI arrest Salina suspect and find multiple pounds of drugs

The American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) is thrilled to announce that Theatre Salina of Salina, Kansas, has been selected to participate in AACT NewPlayFest 2026 as a Producing Theatre.

Theatre Salina is one of only six theatres in the nation to receive this prestigious honor. Each cycle, hundreds of playwrights submit original scripts for consideration.

Following a rigorous three-tier review process, the Producing Theatres will select one finalist to produce, and the six plays are then announced as AACT NewPlayFest 2026 award winners.

Aligned with AACT's mission of providing support and resources to community theatres, AACT NewPlayFest addresses the critical need for new, high-quality plays for community theatre audiences worldwide. This unique playwriting competition guarantees that each winning play will be produced as a world premiere by an established theatre and published by Dramatic Publishing Company in an AACT NewPlayFest anthology.

Founded in 1960, Theatre Salina is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of people in Salina and the surrounding region by creating a broad range of quality theatrical programs for their entertainment and education, and to provide people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to participate in play production and other theatre activities.

Theatre Salina currently produces 14 productions each season, including their seven-show subscription series, Center for Theatre Arts youth productions, their After Dark series, and original dance productions. Theatre Salina has been the National Winner of AACTFest 2001 with its production of Wit, the recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award for organizational excellence, and the Twink Lynch Award.

The winning plays will receive a full production by the Producing Theatre between June 2025 and December 2026. Theatre Salina to produce award-winning world premiere

The Salvation Army corps building on North Santa Fe Avenue and the Thrift store on Fifth and Walnut Streets will both be closed until roof repairs are completed.&nbsp;

Salina Salvation Army Corps Director Lt. Luke Hursh said the initial estimate for roofing repairs on North Santa Fe Avenue is $100,000, while the estimate for the thrift store is close to $90,000.

Although covered by insurance, it is expected that&nbsp;any settlement&nbsp;will&nbsp;take time and will&nbsp;not be enough to cover the&nbsp;added&nbsp;expense&nbsp;of keeping programs running&nbsp;and&nbsp;addressing the&nbsp;damages.

On Friday&nbsp;evening, May 31, Salina was hit with a fast-moving&nbsp;severe weather system that generated torrential rain at a rate of 3 inches per hour.&nbsp;Coupled&nbsp;with&nbsp;hailstones that tore through structures&nbsp;several weeks ago, this has&nbsp;caused&nbsp;flooding&nbsp;and&nbsp;property&nbsp;damage.

In the case of the Salvation Army Salina corps building&nbsp;on North Santa Fe,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;Thrift store&nbsp;on fifth and Walnut&nbsp;which serves&nbsp;the community, hundreds of hail impacts made&nbsp;Swiss cheese of the roof,&nbsp;which allowed water in, damaging fixtures, clothing items and leaving&nbsp;behind&nbsp;soaked ceiling tiles and carpet.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Unfortunately, this extensive damage&nbsp;and subsequent repairs are&nbsp;jeopardizing&nbsp;critical feeding&nbsp;programs and services&nbsp;at the corps and&nbsp;operations of the&nbsp;Thrift store.&nbsp;

“Even though we have sustained significant damage at both locations, this will not deter us from fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army in Salina,”&nbsp;said Lieutenant&nbsp;Luke Hursh, Salvation Army&nbsp;Salina Corps Director.&nbsp;“It may slow us down a bit, but we know we have a strong community that will step up and help us achieve even more than we can accomplish on our own.”

UPDATED: Salina Salvation Army buildings damaged by hailstorm

The Rolling Hills Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of a magnificent male southern white rhino to the zoo. Kengele, whose name means "bell" in Swahili, moved from The Wilds in southeastern Ohio, a research and conservation center affiliated with the Columbus Zoo.

Turning 26 on June 9, Kengele and Evey, the zoo's female southern white rhino, will continue the ongoing efforts to sustain the southern white rhino population, underscoring the zoo's commitment to preserve and protect this incredible species. Currently, southern white rhinos are classified as near-threatened due to habitat loss and poaching of rhinos for their horns.

"We are beyond excited to welcome Kengele to our zoo family," said Brenda Gunder, Rolling Hills Zoo Curator. "His addition to our rhino population provides a wonderful opportunity for our guests to learn about the critical conservation efforts needed to protect these majestic animals. Kengele's unique personality and impressive presence will undoubtedly make him a favorite among visitors."

White rhinos populations are decreasing primarily due to poaching losses. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission’s African Rhino Specialist Group (AfRSG) reported that there are now an estimated 16,803 white rhinos – and their conservation status is listed as near threatened.

While Kengele acclimates to his new surroundings, RHZ's rhino barn will remain closed for the next few days. Once he has adjusted, guests can observe the behaviors and characteristics of one of nature's most extraordinary creatures.

The white rhino, along with the roughly equal-sized greater one-horned rhino, is the largest land mammal after the elephant. It has two distinct subspecies, but only populations of the southern white rhino remain viable. The northern white rhino is extinct in the wild due to poaching, and only two females remain at a sanctuary in East Africa.

Rolling Hills Zoo is dedicated to inspiring people to conserve and protect our natural world. Kengele's presence at the zoo is a testament to our ongoing commitment to animal welfare, conservation, and education.

Other interesting facts about the white rhino:

The white rhino lives in Africa, in long and short-grass savannahs.

Just five countries hold 99% of Africa’s white rhinos – the vast majority of those in South Africa.

White rhinos are grazers. Its wide, square upper lip is adapted for feeding on grasses. It is sometimes called the square-lipped rhinoceros.

White rhinos can live to be 35-40 years of age. Gestation lasts approximately 16 months, and mothers give birth to one calf every 2-3 years.

White rhinos are semi-social and territorial. Females and sub-adults generally are social, but bulls are often solitary.

White rhinoceros is taken from the Afrikaans word describing its mouth: “wyd”, meaning “wide”. Early English settlers misinterpreted the “wyd” for “white”. 

White rhinos will weigh 4,000-6,000 lbs. with a height of 5 – 6 feet tall at shoulder, and a length of 10-16 feet of head and body

White rhinos have two horns. The larger front horn measures 37 – 79 inches.  The rear horn measures up to 22 inches long.

The Saline County Treasurer's Office is receiving calls from people who are receiving texts or emails stating that their property is in foreclosure.

 Properties that are in foreclosure receive written notification from the county’s attorney. Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois said his office does not send out text or email notifications.

The Salina Area United Way Board of Directors announces that Claire Ludes, Executive Director will be taking on a new role as the Senior Vice President of Development and Strategic Relationships at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS.

Ludes will still reside in the Salina community after assuming this role.

“When I started as the Executive Director of the United Way, the organization was in a tough spot. What used to be a million-dollar organization, only brought in 340K my first year, and then Covid only two months after starting, I thought how will I ever turn things around,” Ludes said. “Now I look back and think to myself, I left it better than I found it.”

During Ludes’ tenure, the Salina Area United Way started a Covid-19 Relief Fund, returned the organization to Funded Partners, launched the Early Childcare Initiative, receiving over $2 million in grant support to expand and open 4 new childcare centers and ended this past calendar year in bringing in over $1 million dollars for their campaign.

“Salina will still be home”, says Ludes. “I am thankful for all the relationships and support I have received from the community and hope to continue to still serve Salina in some capacity in my new role.”

“On behalf of the Salina Area United Way Board of Directors, we are saddened to see Executive Director, Claire Ludes leave”, says Tama Davidson, Salina Area United Way Board President. 

“Since her arrival as Executive Director in 2020, Claire led her staff and the Board in a return to funded partners, Make a Difference grants, successfully implemented and guided the childcare initiative to become a sustainable program, and rejuvenated community involvement and donor campaigns. Campaign goals increased under Claire’s direction and were met or exceeded in the last two years. The United Way is a reliable community partner for local non-profits and funding has led to many new programs. We remain committed to improving the communities we serve.”

The Salina Area United Way Board of Directors has appointed Christina Small, Early Childcare Director, as the Interim Executive Director. Small has been on the United Way staff since April 2023, overseeing the childcare initiative.

Ludes leaving SAUW to work for Cosmosphere

The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage this month at RFD Broadway's Kid camp production of Roald Dahl's, "Willy Wonka KIDS."

Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder, in addition to a host of fun new songs, Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka KIDS is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone's sweet tooth.

The public will have two opportunities to watch the performers who participated in the 2024 RFD Kids Camp. Showtimes are June 21 at 4:00 p.m. and June 22 at 7:00 p.m. Both performances will be held in the A.J. Steinberg Auditorium, located at 401 N. Cedar Street.

Started in 1959, Broadway RFD is the longest running outdoor theatre in the state of Kansas. Each Summer, talented members of the Smoky Valley community and surrounding areas come together to bring the highest quality show to our patrons. People come far and wide, with their lawn chairs in tow, to sit in the summer breeze and be immersed in song and dance. Governor Laura Kelly announced today that seven organizations will receive a combined $3.9 million in grants through the Advancing Digital Opportunities to Promote Technology (ADOPT) program. ADOPT supports the Kelly administration’s work to connect more Kansans to high-speed internet by making public Wi-Fi accessible and distributing devices in underserved areas.&nbsp;

“Kansans rely on technology for work, school, health care, and connecting to each other,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“The ADOPT grants support community organizations in our shared mission to connect more people to the internet and critical digital skills.”

To continue connecting Kansans to devices and internet access across the state, an additional round of funding will open later this year with $10.4 million available.

“These awards will enhance internet access to economically distressed households and communities,”&nbsp;Director of Broadband Development Jade Piros de Carvalho said.&nbsp;“With this investment, Kansas continues to amplify digital opportunities across the state.”

The Wichita Library Foundation, $289,270The foundation will install nine solar-powered charging benches in low-income areas, leveraging the Wichita Public Library’s extensive reach. The benches will be enabled with free Wi-Fi so people can access the internet while charging their devices. With its seven branches, the library collaborates with non-profits to enhance reading and digital skills, offering free computing access, classes, and circulating devices to boost digital literacy. This effort is crucial in a city where more than 40,000 households lack home internet.

Cunningham Communications, $107,279.90Cunningham will provide public Wi-Fi to 54 outdoor and two indoor access points across 10 communities in North Central Kansas. The project ensures high-speed internet access in targeted areas, including Glen Elder State Park, sports complexes, school fields, parks, pools, golf courses, and camping sites across Mitchell, Cloud, Osborne, Jewell, and Republic counties.

Mokan Communications, $721,111Mokan,&nbsp;in partnership with several Miami County organizations, will place 21 public Wi-Fi access points in Paola Park Square and around Wallace Park. Approximately 3.53 miles of buried fiber will also provide high-speed connectivity.

WTC, $721,111WTC and numerous community partners will offer free public Wi-Fi to economically distressed locations in Riley County. This project will deploy 124 public high-speed, Wi-Fi internet access points.

Grey Snow Management, $370,793Grey Snow Management, in partnership with the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, will provide underserved tribal and surrounding areas with access to 150 Dell Latitude laptops, six Alienware PCs, and essential accessories. This program will enhance digital literacy and expand educational and recreational opportunities, addressing significant digital and economic disparities within tribal membership across Brown and Doniphan Counties.

Kansas State University, $1,484,215, Kansas State University will enhance digital literacy and access in rural Kansas communities. The project seeks to bridge the digital divide by distributing Chromebooks to elementary, middle, and high school students within Kansas State University’s Rural Education Center support network.&nbsp;Goals include promoting science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and ensuring sustained technology use through durable devices and support.

Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC), $239,400KCKCC will provide access to 350 laptops to students receiving Pell Grants, eliminating a waiting list of 40-plus students each semester. This program aims to ensure equal access to technology, crucial for academic success, employment opportunities, and essential services.

More about Advancing Digital Opportunities to Promote Technology (ADOPT)

Kansas was the first state in the nation to receive $15 million in U.S. Department of Treasury Digital Connectivity Technology (DCT) Funds.

To address the digital divide and enhance digital equity across the state, the Kansas Office of Broadband Development (KOBD) announced an application will open for the Capitol Project Fund Digital Connectivity Technology (DCT) Equipment and Public Wi-Fi Enablement Program. This initiative is a crucial step in implementing the recently published Kansas Digital Equity Plan, designed to tackle the challenges of broadband accessibility, affordability, and device availability.

The&nbsp;Equipment Distribution Program&nbsp;awards grant dollars to eligible entities to make devices available to individuals who do not subscribe to broadband connectivity due to lack of devices and equipment. The program makes available, to qualifying individuals, computers, laptops, and tablets through no-cost, short or long-term loan programs administered by eligible entities.&nbsp; Subrecipients will be required to prioritize individuals with no device over those receiving devices through other programs (schools, etc.). The primary objective of this program is to award funding to eligible entities to distribute no-cost devices and equipment to critical need individuals who lack devices and equipment.&nbsp; Eligible entities (i.e. – sub-recipients) will retain ownership of the devices throughout the term of the loan.&nbsp;

Max Individual Award: $500,000. Required Applicant Match: None

The&nbsp;Public Wi-Fi Enablement Program&nbsp;will provide access to high-quality, reliable public Wi-Fi based broadband in Kansas.&nbsp; Public Wi-Fi applications will be accepted with priority given to applications that address unserved and economically distressed areas which have a compelling need for free and reliable broadband services that bridge critical access gaps to support quality of life considerations.&nbsp; Applicants are expected to engage community leaders and stakeholders in the development of projects that will benefit Kansas citizens and communities.&nbsp; Grantees will be required to provide free public Wi-Fi services within the proposed service area that directly enable work, education, and health monitoring for at least five years from the completion of the Project.

This initiative is a crucial step in implementing the recently published Kansas Digital Equity Plan, designed to tackle the challenges of broadband accessibility, affordability, and device availability.The&nbsp;Equipment Distribution Program&nbsp;awards grant dollars to eligible entities to make devices available to individuals who do not subscribe to broadband connectivity due to lack of devices and equipment. The program makes available, to qualifying individuals, computers, laptops, and tablets through no-cost, short or long-term loan programs administered by eligible entities.&nbsp; Subrecipients will be required to prioritize individuals with no device over those receiving devices through other programs (schools, etc.). Salina Central releases names of students on second semester honor roll

The fall of 95’ marked the start of a new era at Southeast of Saline as two new fields, one baseball, and one softball, were built in Gypsum.

That same year, Mike Garretson began his coaching career at SES as the leader of the Lady Trojan softball team.

On Monday, 28 years and 423 wins later, Coach Garretson announced his retirement as Southeast’s head boys baseball coach.

“Everything about my time in Gypsum was good,” Garretson said. “Being on a baseball or softball field with the kids was always enjoyable. I grew up on a baseball field and this almost allowed me to stay a kid for a little while longer.”

Garretson, who retired from teaching at SES prior to this season, also prided himself on the academic side of the student-athlete experience, serving Southeast in the classroom as well as on the field.

“Coach Garretson filled many roles for us during his time here and he’s done so much more than just coaching during practices and games,” SES AD Doug Minneman said. “He was very involved in the school and teaching community here and he’ll be very difficult to replace. He did a fantastic job with our baseball program over the years and we definitely appreciate all he’s done here at Southeast.”

Under Garretson’s leadership, the Trojans became a force to be reckoned with, posting winning records in each of the last 12 seasons, with an overall record of 194-69 during that span.

“We’re set up really well and this program is on an upward trajectory,” Garretson said. “We played a lot of young kids this year with only two seniors and those guys got a lot of experience. They’ll be good but it’s not because of me, it’s because of all the youth coaches that worked with these kids from when they were young.”

Garretson concludes his stellar coaching career with an overall record of 423-200 between baseball (300-146) and softball (123-54).

In a statement issued on social media over the weekend, the long-time coach left a parting message for his team and former players.

“It’s been a wonderful experience to share the joy of baseball with the incredible student-athletes from Southeast of Saline,” he said. “I want to thank our past and present admins and honor my incredible group of assistant coaches who served our students. To all my past players, I appreciate every one of you, you always gave it your best and I enjoyed our time together on all those fields we shared.”

⚾️ Mike Garretson retires after 28-year coaching career at SES

At about 8:00 a.m., on Tuesday, June 4, a vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Water Well Road and Centennial Road in Saline County.&nbsp;

According to Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner, a Cadillac Escalade and a Chevy Silverado Pickup were traveling westbound on Waterwell Road when the lead vehicle, the Cadillac, began to slow down to make the turn south. 

"The vehicle behind was also going westward, and decided to make an improper pass and started to pass along on the left-hand side of the vehicle," Gardner said. "As the vehicle was being passed, is when the lead vehicle turned to the south and then the collision occurred."

Gardner said there were no injuries as a result of the crash.&nbsp;

Tuesday morning, around 8:00 a.m., two vehicles at the intersection of&nbsp; Centennial and Water Well Road crashed and caused possible injuries to drivers and passengers.

Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the accident and Salina Police Officers were on the scene to manage busy traffic at the intersection.

KHP staff intend to provide more information on the possible injury-causing vehicle crash.

Drought plaguing parts of Kansas created shorter wheat plants and thinner crop stands this year. In turn, Kansas State University wheat production specialist Romulo Lollato advises growers to make adjustments at harvest time.

“This year, the biggest cause for short wheat has been drought stress,” he said. “During springtime, the crop starts to go through a phase called stem elongation. That’s when plant height is determined. In certain areas, there was virtually no moisture, which caused the plants to be short.”

Not all areas of Kansas have experienced this level of drought. Lollato said irregular rain patterns gave rise to significant plant height differences across counties and even in the same fields.

“The Kansas crop is not uniformly short. A very sparse and variable rainfall distribution created these ‘waves’ within areas where tall and short plants occur, simultaneously, in those locations,” he said.

According to Lollato, producers can attach stripper headers to the front of their combines to effectively harvest small wheat plants. Stripper headers separate the grain head from the remaining plant. On the other hand, traditional headers detach plants halfway down their stems.

Lollato said, “Essentially, they have fingers on them. Those fingers pluck the heads out from the stem. The stripper headers feed the combine with only the wheat heads, which means having a cleaner product go into the combine, with increased efficiency.”

Harvesting low-standing wheat plants with a stripper header can help improve soil quality in semi-arid areas.

“They leave more crop residue behind. It will act as a barrier against weeds and shade the fields, which cools soil temperatures and delays weed emergence. Moisture retention is another important advantage. Stripper headers reduce water loss through evaporation, runoff and erosion.”

If a producer uses a stripper header this year, future crops have the potential to benefit as well, according to Lollato.

“There is a lot of value in having more residue left in the fields,” he said. “When growers plant wheat directly into that crop residue after this year’s harvest, they get all of those benefits, like added moisture, weed control, and erosion reduction, which can help return a very good dollar amount the following summer.”

Conventional headers remain as another workable solution for operations not able to invest in additional implements.

“A stripper header is a pricey investment,” Lollato said. “However, there might be more challenges operating with a conventional header – especially on ground with a great slope – but they still work in this case.”

Making alterations to a traditional header may yield better results when harvesting stunted wheat fields with them.

“The most important thing to keep in mind is to maintain the cutting height as high as possible. You can also adjust the reel on the header to get more movement of wheat from the cutter bar to the auger,” Lollato said.

Other combine headers appropriate for harvesting poorer quality wheat stands include draper and flex heads.
