If there is one place where Americans and Kansans find common ground, it is accountability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When candidate-speak is unaccountable, when fact-checkers can’t keep up, in the face of cascading catastrophic issues, when one side says this and the other that, well--hell, yes!&nbsp;&nbsp;We want accountability.&nbsp;&nbsp;And truth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

So, why is it that Kansas’ monopoly party slavishly reinforces faulty facts/perceptions, or worse yet simply refuses to show up at election time?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Absence from Kansas debates looks at first like a troubling infection, but examined more closely, it’s a pandemic.

To say they are following Trump is almost cliché.&nbsp;&nbsp;We need not document his many no-shows.&nbsp;&nbsp;But whether it’s copycatism or just arrogance, this campaign tactic has trickled, or cascaded, down to Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In Salina, JR Claeys, our Saline/Dickinson County 24th District Senator who also runs/manages/consults Trump’s campaign and many others, has followed suit. Who is the ONLY candidate who refused to appear or even send a statement, for the League of Women Voters forum?&nbsp;&nbsp;Claeys.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

But his refusal’s arguable effect on Salina history is even more disturbing.&nbsp;&nbsp;For more than a half century, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters have co-hosted pre-election candidate forums.&nbsp;&nbsp;This year, the forum was planned as usual.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Suddenly, the Chamber withdrew.&nbsp;&nbsp;No longer did it feel responsible to offer the public an examination of candidates. The Chamber had “received …. concerns regarding [League] partisanship.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Their “community partners” made it clear “that there is a perception in the community that the League is a partisan organization.”&nbsp;&nbsp;So, they decided to “protect [their] reputation as non-partisan.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Who, it might be asked, is partisan here? An organization that wants the public to be informed, or one that doesn’t?&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s nearly impossible to avoid the echo Chamber’s language regarding the League of Women Voters as a ‘partisan organization.’&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2016, only slightly more ridiculously, now-Kansas-Attorney-General Kris Kobach, infamously conferred the label “communist League of Women Voters.”

After 50 years, why the Chamber’s change of mind—and heart?

The same question might apply in another Senator’s campaign, that of Larry Alley in Senate Disrict 32 Cowley County.When pressed in an earlier debate about his votes on Medicaid expansion, women’s reproductive health, and tax issues—votes that some argued were against the best interests of his constituents—Alley said he would answer questions in a second debate but refused to appear on stage with his opponent, Lawrence Moreno.

<a href="https://www.ctnewsonline.com/news/article_445841e8-8c57-11ef-8d11-67fae60217fd.html">Faced with that reality, the local Optimist Club and Chamber of Commerce abruptly cancelled, citing ‘lack of volunteers.”</a>

The U.S. House race for District one is also instructive.&nbsp;&nbsp;Incumbent Tracey Mann of Salina was approached on numerous occasions by broadcast outlets, Chambers of Commerce, and women’s groups, with no response except ‘schedule conflicts.’&nbsp;&nbsp;

The requests:&nbsp;&nbsp;August 17, Douglas County Women For Kansas; September 16, Hutchinson Women for Kansas; October 8 or 14, Hays Chamber and FHSU; Oct 21 or 22, WIBW TV; October 11, 23, or 24, KSAL Salina.&nbsp;&nbsp;In all cases, either no response or ‘schedule conflict.’&nbsp;&nbsp;

Most interestingly, says Democratic candidate Paul Buskirk, “The Douglas County W4K, after no response, saw that Mann was appearing just a few miles away in a nearby town the day before their requested debate.&nbsp;&nbsp;They went.&nbsp;&nbsp;Asking him directly why he’d not responded and renewing their request, Mann told them that he visited each county only once in a given year.”

The brick wall of no-shows is not limited to more rural areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Kansas’ largest city, Mary Knecht, League of Women Voters Wichita-Metro member, relates their experience.&nbsp; 

“Candidates who refused the invitation to participate in a forum for the November 2024 election were Ron Estes, Ty Masterson, and Dan Hawkins.” In other words, both another U.S. House member (Estes) and the leaders of both Kansas Senate and House.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Why do these public servants feel no responsibility to their public?

In Claeys’ case, he has steered dollars and grants to the downtown TIF district, K-State Salina Aviation program, the Airport Authority, the new federal-grant-supported housing project, in which the Senator is rumored to have a financial interest, and others.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Money talks. Where Claeys goes, bucks bellow.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a VP of Axiom strategies, he manages or ‘consults with’ his and numerous other election races--<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/5ee12ffcebfb13423b277290">including Donald Trump and Kris Kobach</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;All races famous for their blizzards of last-minute postcards against opponents, most filled with unsubstantiated accusations.

Axiom’s profits also come from the ballot initiatives like the $2 million KC Chiefs’ proposed new stadium. Dollars paid stayed--with Axiom.

Besides his legislative salary, <a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/10/19/kansas-lawmakers-on-track-for-hefty-salary-increases-in-2025/">due to double next year</a>, Kris Kobach hired his former campaign manager and spokesperson as <a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/politics/elections/2023/01/12/kansas-lawmaker-to-advise-kris-kobach-remain-in-state-legislature/69799613007/">‘Senior Advisor,’</a> at over $75,000 a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What really costs us, however, are not his salaries, but his influence.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“One hundred percent of his contributions came from PACs, corporations or other types of businesses.” His fund-raisers are held in well-heeled<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/06/04/where-did-kansas-state-senators-campaign-funds-come-from-the-answers-might-surprise-you/"> Kansas City and Wichita at hundreds to thousands a plate</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under these circumstances, why talk to constituents at their doors, to the public at a League of Women Voters debate, or even/especially to the press?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina press uniformly reports non-response.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nathan King, Salina Post says, “I called 4 different phone numbers repeatedly asking for response.&nbsp;&nbsp;Got nothing.” 

To confirm, I personally emailed Claeys and left voicemail asking for response.&nbsp;&nbsp;I, too, got nothing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

So, did Claeys’ Trump our Chamber of Commerce? Or vice versa?

Either way, the public is robbed of its right to truth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unaccountably.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Salina League of Women Voters has gathered responses from candidates seeking local and federal office. Each candidate was provided a set of questions. Their responses offer information on their positions and plans, providing voters with a resource to better understand where each candidate stands on important topics.

What is your motive for running for this office and what are your qualifications?

 I was raised in a family of service.  As I look at our elected and appointed officials in Washington, they seem to spend most their time fussing and bickering with one another and ignoring the core of serving their communities.  It is time to remind ourselves of the purpose of Government:  to serve the needs of the people.

For nearly 40 years I have worked to help high school students get to college; and help college students complete their degrees and begin their careers.  My vast experience includes working in high-stress and high-demand atmospheres where bringing people together is the only way to move forward and to serve.

How can we be assured that, if elected, you will work in the best interests of your constituents versus your personal interests?

 I always honor my word. My first 100 days in office will be invested with meeting my 434 new colleagues I the House of Representatives – learning about their journeys and the needs of the communities they represent.  Hopefully they will be willing to listen about the needs of the communities in our 1st District of Kansas.  We cannot wait until the moment of dispute or heated negotiation to meet for the first time.  Government can succeed when good people “give a little to gain a little’ in support of their communities.

What will you do to address the Gun Violence crisis?

 Our country’s founders established the 2nd amendment as part of the Bill of Rights – to assure these new and unruly colonies that their freedoms would be protected.  These same founders, ordinary people shaped by extraordinary times, knew that this frame work of government would evolve over time.  And I believe they embraced that America would lean upon its common sense to grow.

Requiring permits to own a gun makes sense.

Requiring a brief waiting period to conduct background checks make sense.

Keeping guns out of the hands of those who would do harm to themselves or to others makes sense.

And the most advanced gun available to soldiers of 1787 could shoot 3 rounds per minute.  I truly doubt that the founders would see any common sense in allow weapons that shoot hundreds of rounds per minute to be accessed by anyone outside of our police and armed forces.

Why are you seeking this office and what are your qualifications?

 I am running for Kansas Senate District 24 because I believe our state needs leaders who will prioritize the well-being of every Kansan, not just he wealthy and powerful.  I am committed to ensuring that all Kansans have access to quality healthcare, fully funded public education, and the opportunity to build a better life. 

 My background as an attorney, coupled with my experiences in community organizing has equipped me with the skills to advocate for policies that promote fairness and justice.  I’ve been deeply involved in local efforts to address systemic issues and believe that public service is the best way to create lasting, positive change.

What is your position on Expanding Medicaid and why? Would you support putting Medicaid Expansion on the ballot?

  I fully support expanding Medicaid in Kansas.  Medicaid expansion is vital for ensuring healthcare access for thousands of Kansans, reducing mortality rates, and supporting our rural hospitals, many of which are struggling to survive. 

 Kansas is one of the few remaining states that hasn’t expanded Medicaid, and this inaction has resulted in unnecessary suffering and economic strain on our healthcare system,  I would support putting Medicaid expansion on the ballot to let the people decide, through the Kansas Legislature should take immediate action rather than continuing to stall on this issue.

How can we be assured that if elected, you will work in the best interests of your constituents versus your personal interests?

 My dedication to public service stems from my commitment to helping others, not advancing personal interests.  I have spent my career advocating for the rights of individuals and have consistently put people before profit.  If elected, I will continue to work with integrity and transparency, listening to my constituents and making decisions based on what’s best for our community. 

I believe in accountability, and my record of community involvement and professional advocacy demonstrates that I prioritize the needs of the people I serve over personal gain.

What will you do about the Gun Violence crisis?

The gun violence crisis is one of the most pressing public health issues facing our country. I support common-sense gun safety measures, including universal background checks, and red flag laws.

While I respect the Second Amendment, we must take steps to reduce the horrific levels of gun violence that claim thousands of lives each year.  I will work to build bipartisan consensus on gun safety reforms, ensuring that we protect both public safety and responsible gun ownership.

A familiar name has launched a write-in campaign for the Saline County Commission. Kathleen Malone Crouch officially launched her write-in campaign for Saline County Commission District Two on August 19, by filing with Saline County Clerk Jamie Doss. 

Malone Crouch, who previously ran for the Republican nomination against Annie Grevas, lost the primary by only 17 votes following the August 6 election.

“I felt that with a 17 vote difference, I had too much of a chance. I think I have so much to offer the county," Malone Crouch told Salina Post. 

In total, 1,131 Saline County residents voted in the Saline County District Two election.&nbsp;According to the official results, a total of 4,090 Saline County residents voted in the August 6 Primary, representing just 16.7% of registered voters in the county.

Malone Crouch officially filed as a write-in candidate on Monday at 9:08 a.m. The primary election was close enough that she had the option of a recount, which she would have to pay for herself. Doss said a hand recount would likely cost a few hundred dollars.

"Our election staff are paid $10/hr, then it just depends on how long it would take them to count all District Two," Doss said.

Doss said Malone Crouch or any<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salinecountyks.gov/election"> write-in candidate does not have to pay a fee to file.</a>&nbsp;Malone Crouch said although she did not have to pay to file for her write-in campaign, she did pay to file in Republican primary.

The deadline to file for a write-in campaign is October. 8.

Malone Crouch said she feels confident that voter turnout will increase in November. 

"Thinking that the November 5 election will bring out more voters because of the presidential race," Malone Crouch said. "I believe I have a great chance to win this, although I know I would be coming from behind as the underdog write-in, I'm going to give it my best."

Malone Crouch said she plans to hold additional meet-and-greet events at coffee shops around Salina, visit with residents in rural parts of District Two and attend public events as she would&nbsp;

"I have ordered write-in bumper stickers.&nbsp; I've ordered more signs and banners that say write-in," Malone Crouch said.

Malone Crouch, who participated in the League of Women Voters Speed Dating with the Candidate forum, the Granny Brigade forum and the Saline County Republicans forum, said she would be interested in participating in any additional candidate forums before Nov. 5.&nbsp;

"I will be present at meetings unless there's something life-threatening that I can't avoid and I will read about the issues before the meeting," Malone Crouch said. "I believe I do have the passion it takes to serve."

What qualifications do you have that make you the best candidate for this position?

I have attended Register of Deeds &amp; Deputy school receiving my Deputy Certificate, as well as obtained the 36 Kansas State University credit hours for Register of Deeds. While Attending these schools I have built relationships with other Register of Deeds across Kansas. In doing so, I feel as though I have built a community of support in which I can comfortably reach out for any type of guidance.

Skill building has always been a priority of mine. I have several hours of continuing education including leadership &amp; supervisor training. These courses have equipped me with the tools needed to succeed as a better leader for the office. I am C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) certified, which certifies me to help protect our office and community if a natural disaster happens. Other certifications I have acquired include Mental Health, First Aid, and CPR Certified. This training would prove to be beneficial in the case of a medical emergency in our office.

I recently served as a member of the County Employee Council, AMBUCS, and County Website committee where we spent 2 years planning, building and designing our website. These county councils have helped me build lasting relationships with other county members which has taught me more about their offices and important goals they work towards on a day to day basis.

My track record for the past 8 years shows my continuous eagerness for knowledge, training, and experience that will certainly not only benefit our office and county, but our community as a whole!

Why did you decide to run for Register of Deeds?

Running for Register of Deeds was an easy decision for me genuinely because I love what I do! I appreciate the history and work that goes into making sure our office runs smoothly and ensuring that the documents brought into our office are properly recorded efficiently. 

My keen sense for detail is what makes me perfectly suitable for this position. Lastly, I love being a part of the Salina Community and this position will grant me the pleasure of serving to the best of my ability.

What is the most essential duty of the Register of Deeds?

There are many essential duties I feel that are important to this position. I believe the most important are ensuring that the documents recorded within the office are recorded with integrity, accuracy, proper archiving, and completeness. Being aware of new changes in the Association and following state statutes. 

Ensuring accurate recordings, safely keeping and preserving records. Working closely daily with many businesses such as title companies, banks, law offices, surveyors, researchers and more.

What is the number one issue you would address once elected?

I would like to try to find more ways to help prevent property fraud. Looking into implementing more required documents for electronic recordings. Equip the general public with educational material that would help the Saline County citizens be more aware and alert of the rise of property fraud. 

Thankfully Saline County has not been dramatically affected by it, however that doesn't mean it can't happen. I want to continue to find more ways to help our residents keep their homes safe from scammers.

Serving as District 2 County Commissioner will allow me to continue contributing to a community that has supported me and my family for 37 years. I want to work at the policy level to meet Saline County citizens’ needs and boost economic development.

Increase/develop suitable space for the Saline County Health Department, be an active participant working to efficiently repurpose empty building spaces within Saline County, encourage non-tax funds to support Saline County Departments and Services.

I do not have any plans to promote any changes to existing taxes. The largest capital improvement for Saline County occurred with the new jail. Affordable housing is critical to boost economic development and growth in all cities/counties. The County Commission needs to continue to cooperate with all local entities and the City in all efforts. Through ARPA funding, Saline County Commission approved $1 million to South View Estates for infrastructure, capturing some of the housing investment during the Rural Housing Incentive District tax diversion. 

What is your stance on mitigating and preventing homelessness?

With the recent Supreme Court decision, communities have a great amount of flexibility to deal with mitigating and preventing homelessness. I would support the County Commission cooperating with the city in developing a comprehensive plan to mitigate and prevent homelessness.

What is your experience with preparing or authorizing budgets?

I have experience in developing and authorizing budgets during my 29 years as Director of Community Corrections. While the daily population served increased, State budget funding did not; increasing the need for non-tax funded dollars through grants and contracts to balance the budget while increasing services and staff. 

If new resources were available, what one area of county services would you feel most needs additional resources? Due to the need for suitable space for the Saline County Health Department, I would at this time recommend additional resources go to supporting that effort and to use those resources recruiting, retention and development of county employees.

If any budget should be shielded from cuts it would be those services that are related to safety in our community.What element of the county's government is most effective, and why? County employees, doing the day-to-day work, are the most effective element of this county’s government. The Senior Center Director, Community Corrections Director and the Health Department Director and all staff within all County departments regularly access grant dollars to supplement agency budgets. County employees volunteer within the community, support community growth, provide services to those highest of need persons, and more. With the hiring of Phillip Smith-Hanes as County Administrator; his progressive vision, strong leadership, and diligence provides the County Commission with excellent direction.Are county taxes too high, about right or low? The budget process works, listening to the citizens, and balancing the budget with appropriate taxes. As previously stated, citizens approved with a vote, a capital project funded with sales tax, that being the jail. Until that sunset, that tax is capped. What do you feel is the county's role concerning water quality standards? Recently the County Commission approved ARPA funding for local water districts. The county needs to continue to cooperate with all local entities to ensure our water meets all Federal and State safe water standards.<h2>Closing</h2>Why should people elect you to serve as a commissioner?
