Jean Evelyn Sutton, 90, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Bryan West Hospital of Lincoln, NE while in hospice care. Diagnosed with sepsis, Jean died peacefully with family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Wilma (Keith) Ellis; husband, Harold Sutton; infant sister, Carolee Ann; grandsons, Jonathan and Nathan Sutton (infant); and great grandson, Forrest Sutton (infant).

She leaves her daughter, Kimberly; son, Kent (Diana) and brother, Raymond Ellis (Carollyn); 4 grandsons: Taylor (Julie), Clayton (Chelsea), Blake (Erin) and Logan; 3 granddaughters: Samantha Orrick (David), Alyssa Stutzman (Jordan) and Emma Ray (Christian); 14 great grandsons; and 8 great granddaughters. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, brother-in-law’s, sister-in-law’s, cousins and dear friends.

Jean was born in Salina, Kansas on January 4, 1935, and lived near her father’s family homesteaded (Gypsum) and her mother taught rural school. She was an excellent student and applied what she learned. She excelled at free hand pencil drawings, sketching and hand printing posters. She also learned to mend clothing and make alterations. After marriage, Jean’s home sewing projects expanded to include matching upper garments for the family and custom fit blouses and prom dresses. Jean also enjoyed playing clarinet in the band, and cheerleading for Gypsum Pirates sports teams. She graduated class Salutatorian (1953 Gypsum High School.)

At an early age Jean was introduced to the Christian faith through her mother (and grandmother.) After high school, while living in Sterling, KS, at the age of 18 she followed the Lord in Baptism at the local Missionary Church there. Then in 1955 on June 26, she married her high school sweetheart, Harold Sutton, and started a family as they moved to various locations in KS, including Wichita for 5 years, before they returned to Gypsum in 1970.

In the years that followed, she emphasized the importance of faith in home life, daily prayer and scripture reading. Jean was active for many years in the Gypsum First Baptist Church. She enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School during summer. The daily, weeklong program was well attended by many school age children in the Gypsum area. She designed poster sized charts that reinforced the Bible lessons with singing.&nbsp; Jean also ministered among women through encouragement and prayer. Her heart was to share the good news of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ to any who would listen. Friends and family visiting her home were welcomed with this good news, hospitality and prayer.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

No matter where she lived, she showed hospitality to new acquaintances. Her journal entries give testimony to the many that she prayed for and the prayers answered. These journal entries over the years fill many notebooks, the latest of which she kept near her well-worn bible. Her cards and letters exchanged for every occasion would include passages of scriptures and hymns which she held dear, seldom missing an opportunity to share.

In 2019, Jean moved to Nebraska to be near her family. There she enjoyed frequent drop-in visits and especially holidays and birthday celebrations where she traveled to family homes for food and fellowship. During her time in the hospital, she enjoyed seeing family and listening to scripture reading and familiar hymns. Although she was not feeling well she would manage to share a smile or an “amen.” She said if the Lord were to come take her home, she was ready to go. We are thankful to the Lord for his comfort and assurance that we will see her again.

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” 1 Cor 15:52&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, July 11, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N 8th St, Salina, KS 67401, with family present from 6-8. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, at First Baptist Church of Gypsum, with burial to follow at Gypsum Valley Cemetery.

But for many Democratic leaders, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-big-beautiful-gop-taxes-ced365c347de9320eef2ccb8df16dda2">tax break and spending cut package</a>&nbsp;passed by Trump’s Republican allies in Congress on Thursday represents the key to the Democratic Party’s resurgence.

Even before the final vote, Democratic officials were finalizing ambitious plans for rallies, voter registration drives, attack ads, bus tours and even a multiday vigil, all intended to highlight the most controversial elements of Trump’s “big beautiful” bill: deep cuts to the nation’s safety net that will leave nearly 12 million more people without health coverage and millions of others without food assistance, according to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cbo-big-beautiful-bill-trump-republican-deficit-debt-d432b67a965790e4a26de46ea8db1266">nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office</a>.

In political battlegrounds across Alaska and Iowa, Pennsylvania and California, Democrats have begun to use the bill against Republicans. Democrats are promising that the Republican president’s domestic policy achievement to date will be the defining issue of every major election between now and next fall’s midterms.

“One thing is abundantly clear: Republicans own this mess and it’s an albatross around their necks heading into the midterms,” Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin told The Associated Press. “This is the least popular legislation in modern history, and the more voters learn about it, the more they hate it. That’s a clear directive for Democrats -- we’re going to make sure every single voter knows who is responsible.”

Even with early public opinion on their side, however, it’s far from certain that the legislation will be the political winner Democrats hope.

The Democratic brand remains deeply unpopular, the party has no clear leader, its message is muddled and core elements of the Democratic base are frustrated and drifting. Some of the bill’s provisions will not take effect until after the 2026 election, so voters may not have felt the full impact by the time they vote. At the same time, it’s unclear how many voters are paying attention to the Washington-based debate.

The Democratic super political action committee Priorities USA warned this week that Democrats must work harder if they want their message to break through.

“We can’t just assume that because we’re angry that the voters that we need to communicate with are angry. Everyone needs to step up and realize the enormous challenge that’s in front of us,” executive director Danielle Butterfield said. “We’re nowhere near a good starting place.”

The bill provides for $4.5 trillion in tax breaks that were enacted in Trump’s first term and would have expired if Congress failed to act. New breaks will allow workers to deduct tips and overtime pay. There are $1.2 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and food stamps and a major rollback of green energy investments. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cbo-big-beautiful-bill-trump-republican-deficit-debt-d432b67a965790e4a26de46ea8db1266">nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office</a>&nbsp;estimates the package will add&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cbo-trump-tax-bill-republicans-senate-5f591bea21bd95eec45ba90c93c50687">$3.3 trillion to the deficit</a>&nbsp;over the decade.

Privately, some Democrats conceded that Republicans were smart to pass the bill on the eve of a holiday weekend when fewer voters would be paying attention.

As some Democrats in Washington predicted a political backlash across America, the response was somewhat muted Thursday at a Democratic event in Iowa, barely 10 miles from the State Fairgrounds where Trump later drew thousands for an evening rally.

An audience of roughly 100 people listened as local Democratic officials railed against the legislation and called on voters to oust Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, the local congressman, for supporting it.

Audience member Michael Rieck, 69, said Iowa Democrats left him a message about the rally, but when he went online to learn more, “there was nothing.”

“I texted back to them that I didn’t see any advertisement,” he said. “They slowly corrected that. I’m still not impressed with what they did to advertise this event.”

Rieck said he wants to see different factions of the party better coordinate their message.

Progressive activists were moving through Minnesota in a big green bus as part of Fair Share America’s 29-stop “stop the billionaire giveaway” tour. The group is focused on Republican-led congressional districts where elected officials have largely stopped having in-person town halls with constituents.

“We know we’re fighting upstream,” said Fair Share’s executive director, Kristen Crowell. “But when people hear exactly what’s in this bill, they’re adamantly opposed.”

The bill is generally unpopular, according to polling conducted throughout the month of June, although some individual provisions are popular.

For example,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/tablet/2025/06/17/june-6-10-2025-washington-post-ipsos-poll-gop-budget-bill/" target="_blank">a Washington Post/Ipsos poll</a>&nbsp;found that majorities of U.S. adults support increasing the annual child tax credit and eliminating taxes on earnings from tips, and about half support work requirements for some adults who receive Medicaid.

On the other hand, the poll found that majorities oppose reducing federal funding for food assistance to low-income families and spending about $45 billion to build and maintain migrant detention centers.

The price tag could be a sticking point. About 6 in 10 U.S. adults in the poll said it was “unacceptable” that the bill is expected to increase the U.S. national debt, currently at $36 trillion, by about $3 trillion over the next decade.

But polling indicates that most Americans aren’t paying attention to the nuances of the bill, either.

The Washington Post/Ipsos poll found that only about one-third of U.S. adults have heard “a great deal” or “a good amount” about it.

Democrats are planning a summer of organizing

The Democratic National Committee and its allies plan an “organizing summer” that will feature town halls, training and voter registration drives in at least 35 competitive congressional districts. The message will be focused heavily on Trump’s bill.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, who leads the Democratic Governors Association, said her party must keep the bill’s contents at the forefront of people’s minds to ensure it’s an issue in the midterms and even the next presidential election in 2028.

“We’ll just have to keep that on the radar,” she said.

Progressive groups are planning a “Families First” day of action for July 26 in all 50 states. They will highlight people hurt by the new Medicaid cuts and will hold a 60-hour vigil at the U.S. Capitol.

“We have made a promise to each other and to future generations that there will be a safety net in place when we need it. And this is what’s being ripped away. And people will not stand for it,” said one of the Families First organizers, Ai-jen Poo, president of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.

Democrats see Trump’s big bill as key to their comeback. It may not be so easy

Kimberly Marie Krase went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at KU Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Kim was born on July 5, 1978, to Denny and Adele Koehn in Greeley, Colorado.&nbsp;

A proud 1997 graduate of Canton Galva High School, she went on to receive her Bachelors of Social Work from Fort Hays State University in 2001 and her Masters of Social Work from Newman University in 2002.

Kim married Charles Quincy Krase on August 5, 2000. To this union, they welcomed Emma Grace on April 17, 2005, and Rory Cane on August 21, 2008.

Kim is survived by her loving husband, Quincy Krase, and their cherished children, Emma and Cane, of the home; her parents, Denny and Adele Koehn; her brother, Mike (Nicole) Koehn; her mother-in-law, Sandra Jean Krase; her sisters-in-law Gretchen (LG) Moore and Heather (Brad) Minnick; and her nieces and nephews whom she loved; Chance Koehn, Samantha Moore (Josiah Herrera), Jake Moore (Amelia Hoelting),&nbsp;Gannon&nbsp;Minnick&nbsp;and Bennett Minnick.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Roger Krase, on August 28, 2018.

Kim loved her family, and they were the center of her world. She was incredibly proud to be Quincy’s wife and often spoke with admiration and gratitude for his strength and unwavering support. She was beyond proud of her children. Kim deeply admired Emma’s strength, confidence, and willingness to speak her mind and Cane’s kindness, focus, and remarkable intelligence. Her face would light up whenever she talked about them - it was clear to all how much her family meant to her.

Kim loved serving people. She began her career as a Hospice Social Worker. Later, she worked as a school counselor for both the Canton-Galva and McPherson School Districts, ending her career as a school counselor at McPherson Middle School. Kim was known for her rare combination of welcoming warmth and focused determination. She was deeply kind and compassionate, always willing to pause and offer support to a student, colleague, or family in need. At the same time, she approached her work with a strong sense of purpose and drive to make things better. Kim didn’t shy away from challenges - she faced them head-on, often leading the way in finding thoughtful, creative solutions.

Kim &amp; Quincy became a part of the Galva Christian Church family early in their marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;She made her profession of faith and was baptized on July 23, 2003.

She found ways to use her gifts of creativity and organization, such as directing Vacation Bible School for several years. Drawing in friends to dream with her, build sets, be silly with the youth and share God's word blessed children and adults.

She shared what was important to her, with those around, like providing leadership for Dave Ramsey classes and being an active participant in Sunday School class. Additional responsibilities she accepted include Deaconess, Deacon, Elder and Board Secretary.&nbsp; Even with her cancer diagnosis, she still agreed to serve her church as the Financial Secretary for 2025.

Kim also had another passion in life - basketball. She loved playing the sport as a kid, and then later became a coach. Coach Krase brought a fire and focus to the court that set her apart. She was driven, fiercely competitive, and deeply committed to her players. She coached with the same passion she lived with, pouring her heart into every game, every practice, and every team she led. As a coach or spectator, Kim had a different voice level when it came to basketball - fierce, focused, and intense. Kim could be heard yelling, “box out,” or “that wouldn’t have happened if you followed your shot” from across the gym. One of her fellow coaches commented that her “love of the game of basketball was shared by how she enthusiastically coached and embraced her players.”

Kim had an unmistakable love - some might say obsession - with cats, the color purple, Hocus Pocus, school lunch strawberries and bananas, and her most beloved Mountain Dew.

When faced with her cancer diagnosis, Kim approached it with the same strength, grace, and resolve that defined every part of her life. She met this challenge head-on and with quiet courage, never losing her focus or her faith. Her face would light up whenever she talked about them - it was clear to all how much her family meant to her.Kim loved serving people. She began her career as a Hospice Social Worker. Later, she worked as a school counselor for both the Canton-Galva and McPherson School Districts, ending her career as a school counselor at McPherson Middle School. Kim was known for her rare combination of welcoming warmth and focused determination. She was deeply kind and compassionate, always willing to pause and offer support to a student, colleague, or family in need. At the same time, she approached her work with a strong sense of purpose and drive to make things better. Kim didn’t shy away from challenges - she faced them head-on, often leading the way in finding thoughtful, creative solutions.Kim &amp; Quincy became a part of the Galva Christian Church family early in their marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;She made her profession of faith and was baptized on July 23, 2003.She found ways to use her gifts of creativity and organization, such as directing Vacation Bible School for several years. Drawing in friends to dream with her, build sets, be silly with the youth and share God's word blessed children and adults.She shared what was important to her, with those around, like providing leadership for Dave Ramsey classes and being an active participant in Sunday School class. Additional responsibilities she accepted include Deaconess, Deacon, Elder and Board Secretary.&nbsp; Even with her cancer diagnosis, she still agreed to serve her church as the Financial Secretary for 2025.Kim also had another passion in life - basketball. She was driven, fiercely competitive, and deeply committed to her players. She coached with the same passion she lived with, pouring her heart into every game, every practice, and every team she led. As a coach or spectator, Kim had a different voice level when it came to basketball - fierce, focused, and intense. Kim could be heard yelling, “box out,” or “that wouldn’t have happened if you followed your shot” from across the gym. One of her fellow coaches commented that her “love of the game of basketball was shared by how she enthusiastically coached and embraced her players.”Kim had an unmistakable love - some might say obsession - with cats, the color purple, Hocus Pocus, school lunch strawberries and bananas, and her most beloved Mountain Dew.When faced with her cancer diagnosis, Kim approached it with the same strength, grace, and resolve that defined every part of her life. Bush</a>&nbsp;delivered rare open criticism of the Trump administration — and singer Bono held back tears as he recited a poem — in an emotional video farewell on Monday with staffers of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Obama called the Trump administration’s dismantling of USAID “a colossal mistake.”

Monday was the last day as an independent agency for the six-decade-old humanitarian and development organization, created by President John F. Kennedy as a peaceful way of promoting U.S. national security by boosting goodwill and prosperity abroad.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-musk-rubio-usaid-foreign-aid-bf442d62af67918a6fc5eee839074601">has ordered USAID absorbed</a>&nbsp;into the State Department on Tuesday.

The former presidents and Bono spoke with thousands in the USAID community in a videoconference, which was billed as a closed-press event to allow political leaders and others privacy for sometimes angry and often teary remarks. Parts of the video were shared with The Associated Press.

They expressed their appreciation for the thousands of USAID staffers who have lost their jobs and life’s work. Their agency was one of the first and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-musk-usaid-c0c7799be0b2fa7cad4c806565985fe2">most fiercely targeted</a>&nbsp;for government-cutting by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;and his billionaire ally Elon Musk, with staffers abruptly locked out of systems and offices and terminated by mass emailing.

Trump claimed the agency was run by “radical left lunatics” and rife with “tremendous fraud.” Musk called it “a criminal organization.”

Obama, speaking in a recorded statement, offered assurances to the aid and development workers, some listening from overseas.

“Your work has mattered and will matter for generations to come,” he told them.

Obama has largely kept a low public profile during Trump’s second term and refrained from criticizing the monumental changes that Trump has made to U.S. programs and priorities at home and abroad.

“Gutting USAID is a travesty, and it’s a tragedy. Because it’s some of the most important work happening anywhere in the world,” Obama said. He credited USAID with not only saving lives, but being a main factor in global economic growth that has turned some aid-receiving countries into U.S. markets and trade partners.

The former Democratic president predicted that ”sooner or later, leaders on both sides of the aisle will realize how much you are needed.”

Asked for comment, the State Department said it would be introducing the department’s foreign assistance successor to USAID, to be called America First, this week.

“The new process will ensure there is proper oversight and that every tax dollar spent will help advance our national interests,” the department said.

USAID oversaw programs around the world, providing water and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/somalia-hunger-malnutrition-funding-cuts-usaid-03dfebfdbe19f55a520dad2be390faf5">life-saving food to millions</a>&nbsp;uprooted by conflict in Sudan, Syria, Gaza and elsewhere, sponsoring the “Green Revolution” that revolutionized modern agriculture and curbed starvation and famine, preventing disease outbreaks, promoting democracy, and providing financing and development that allowed countries and people to climb out of poverty.

Bush, who also spoke in a recorded message, went straight to the cuts in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aids-hiv-pepfar-nkengasong-abortion-congress-43b09c9ad24530d24161a95b2fb80eaa">landmark AIDS and HIV program</a>&nbsp;started by his Republican administration and credited with saving 25 million lives around the world.

Bipartisan blowback from Congress to cutting the popular President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, known as PEPFAR, helped save significant funding for the program. But cuts and rule changes have reduced the number getting the life-saving care.

“You’ve showed the great strength of America through your work — and that is your good heart,’’ Bush told USAID staffers. “Is it in our national interests that 25 million people who would have died now live? I think it is, and so do you,” he said.

Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former Colombian President Juan Manual Santos and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield also spoke to the staffers.

Bush and Obama fault Trump’s gutting of USAID on agency’s last day

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, whose multimillion-dollar ministry and huge audience dwindled following his prostitution scandals, has died. He was 90.

Swaggart death was announced Tuesday on his public Facebook page. A cause wasn't immediately given, though Swaggart had been in ill health.

The Louisiana native was best known for being a captivating Pentecostal preacher with a massive following before being caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans in 1988, one of a string of successful TV preachers brought down in the 1980s and ’90s by sex scandals. He continued preaching for decades, but with a reduced audience.

Swaggart encapsulated his downfall in a tearful 1988 sermon, in which he wept and apologized but made no reference to his connection to a prostitute.

“I have sinned against you,” Swaggart told parishioners nationwide. “I beg you to forgive me.”

He announced his resignation from the Assemblies of God later that year, shortly after the church said it was defrocking him for rejecting punishment it had ordered for “moral failure.” The church had wanted him to undergo a two-year rehabilitation program, including not preaching for a full year.

Swaggart said at the time that he knew dismissal was inevitable but insisted he had no choice but to separate from the church to save his ministry and Bible college.

From poverty and oil fields to a household name

Swaggart grew up poor, the son of a preacher, in a music-rich family. He excelled at piano and gospel music, playing and singing with talented cousins who took different paths: rock-'n'-roller&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jerry-lee-lewis-dead-165d562af27b23da9d6d11fc480541e8">Jerry Lee Lewis</a>&nbsp;and country singer&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-music-texas-pasadena-ee50242fe97832287e9e83a8004326d4">Mickey Gilley</a>.

In his hometown of Ferriday, Louisiana, Swaggart said he first heard the call of God at age 8. The voice gave him goose bumps and made his hair tingle, he said.

“Everything seemed different after that day in front of the Arcade Theater,” he said in a 1985 interview with the Jacksonville Journal-Courier in Illinois. “I felt better inside. Almost like taking a bath.”

He preached and worked part time in oil fields until he was 23. He then moved entirely into his ministry: preaching, playing piano and singing gospel songs with the barrelhouse fervor of cousin Lewis at Assemblies of God revivals and camp meetings.

Swaggart started a radio show, a magazine, and then moved into television, with outspoken views.

He called Roman Catholicism “a false religion. It is not the Christian way,” and claimed that Jews suffered for thousands of years “because of their rejection of Christ.”

“If you don't like what I say, talk to my boss,” he once shouted as he strode in front of his congregation at his Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, where his sermons moved listeners to speak in tongues and stand up as if possessed by the Holy Spirit.

Swaggart's messages stirred thousands of congregants and millions of TV viewers, making him a household name by the late 1980s. Contributors built Jimmy Swaggart Ministries into a business that made an estimated $142 million in 1986.

His Baton Rouge complex still includes a worship center and broadcasting and recording facilities.

Swaggart’s downfall came in the late 1980s as other prominent preachers faced similar scandals. Swaggart said publicly that his earnings were hurt in 1987 by the sex scandal surrounding&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/0862277bd6af0a060130a5d7dce38a21">rival televangelist Jim Bakker</a>&nbsp;and a former church secretary at Bakker's PTL ministry organization.

The following year, Swaggart was photographed at a hotel with Debra Murphree, an admitted prostitute who told reporters that the two did not have sex but that the preacher had paid her to pose nude.

She later repeated the claim — and posed nude — for Penthouse magazine.

The surveillance photos that crippled Swaggart's career apparently stemmed from his rivalry with preacher Marvin Gorman, whom Swaggart had accused of sexual misdeeds. Gorman hired the photographer who captured Swaggart and Murphree on film. Swaggart later paid Gorman $1.8 million to settle a lawsuit over the sexual allegations against Gorman.

More trouble came in 1991, when police in California detained Swaggart with another prostitute. The evangelist was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road and driving an unregistered Jaguar. His companion, Rosemary Garcia, said Swaggart became nervous when he saw the police car and weaved when he tried to stuff pornographic magazines under a car seat.

Swaggart was later mocked by the late TV comic Phil Hartman, who impersonated him on NBC's “Saturday Night Live.”

Out of the public eye but still in the pulpit

The evangelist largely stayed out of the news in later years but remained in the pulpit at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, often joined by his son, Donnie, a fellow preacher. His radio station broadcast church services and gospel music to 21 states, and Swaggart's ministry boasted a worldwide audience on the internet.

The preacher caused another brief stir in 2004 with remarks about being “looked at” amorously by a gay man.

“And I'm going to be blunt and plain: If one ever looks at me like that, I'm going to kill him and tell God he died,” Swaggart said, to laughter from the congregation. He later apologized.

Swaggart made few public appearances outside his church, save for singing “Amazing Grace” at the 2005 funeral of Louisiana Secretary of State Fox McKeithen, a prominent name in state politics for decades.

In 2022, he shared memories at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-louisiana-tennessee-music-5838b535133b0f4d1f5ae661da55a81e">memorial service</a>&nbsp;for Lewis, his cousin and rock ‘n’ roll pioneer. DENVER (AP) — An 82-year-old Colorado woman who was injured in a Molotov cocktail attack on demonstrators&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boulder-attack-jewish-festival-85a7660f14959ec5c6d27d0d665ae079">in support of Israeli hostages</a>&nbsp;this month has died, according to court documents filed Monday.

Karen Diamond died as a result of “the severe injuries that she suffered in the attack," Boulder County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman was indicted last week on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boulder-attack-hate-crime-3ea1a82ec9c63c6fc4b9b4be9ba032b7">12 hate crime counts</a>&nbsp;in the June 1 attack in downtown Boulder. He is accused of trying to kill the eight people who were hurt when he threw Molotov cocktails — bottles filled with flammable liquid that are ignited — as well as other people nearby.

Soliman’s attorney, David Kraut, entered the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boulder-colorado-attack-not-guilty-plea-c6aeb3c80c129510f12432812a1c043b">not guilty plea</a>&nbsp;on Soliman’s behalf during a hearing Friday. Soliman was being represented by public defenders who do not comment on their cases to news media.

Investigators say Soliman told them he intended to kill the roughly 20 participants at the weekly demonstration on Boulder’s Pearl Street pedestrian mall. But he threw just two of his over two dozen Molotov cocktails while yelling “Free Palestine.”

Soliman, who is also being&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boulder-firebombing-attack-9820f4b51d73efc3da72150b80634ea2">prosecuted in state court</a>&nbsp;for attempted murder and other charges, told investigators he tried to buy a gun but was not able to because he was not a “legal citizen.”

Soliman did not speak during the hearing last week, and he listened to translations provided by an Arabic interpreter through headphones.

The Egyptian national has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-visas-soliman-colorado-attack-81f44b98365adc01b1ff418a1885a1c6">living in the U.S. illegally</a>&nbsp;with his family, according to federal authorities.

Soliman posed as a gardener and wore a construction vest to get close to the group before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boulder-colorado-attack-israel-palestine-flamethrower-pearl-street-7e680648371c3d1cb7c026d888d99279">launching the attack,</a>&nbsp;prosecutors allege.

The group said the law puts an unfair free-speech burden on adults by requiring them to submit personal information that could be vulnerable to hacking or tracking. It agreed, though, that children under 18 shouldn’t be seeing porn.

A leading adult-content website, Pornhub, has stopped operating in several states, citing the technical and privacy hurdles in complying with the laws.

The Supreme Court has confronted the issue before. In 1996, it struck down parts of a law banning explicit material viewable by kids online. A divided court also ruled against a different federal law aimed at stopping kids from being exposed to porn in 2004 but said less restrictive measures like content filtering are constitutional.

Texas argues that technology has improved significantly in the last 20 years, allowing online platforms to easily check users’ ages with a quick picture. Those requirements are more like ID checks at brick-and-mortar adult stores that were upheld by the Supreme Court in the 1960s, the state said.

District courts initially blocked laws in Indiana and Tennessee as well as Texas, but appeals courts reversed the decisions and let the laws take effect.

The justices reversed lower-court rulings in favor of the Montgomery County school system in suburban Washington. The high court ruled that the schools likely could not require elementary school children to sit through lessons involving the books if parents expressed religious objections to the material.

The decision was not a final ruling in the case, but the justices strongly suggested that the parents will win in the end.

The court ruled that policies like the one at issue in the case are subjected to the strictest level of review, nearly always dooming them.

The school district introduced the storybooks, including "Prince &amp; Knight" and "Uncle Bobby's Wedding," in 2022 as part of an effort to better reflect the district's diversity. In "Uncle Bobby's Wedding," a niece worries that her uncle won't have as much time for her after he gets married to another man.

The justices have repeatedly endorsed claims of religious discrimination in recent years and the case is among several religious-rights cases at the court this term. The decision also comes amid increases in recent years in books being banned from public school and public libraries.

Many of the removals were organized by Moms for Liberty and other conservative organizations that advocate for more parental input over what books are available to students. Soon after President Donald Trump, a Republican, took office in January, the Education Department called the book bans a "hoax" and dismissed 11 complaints that had been filed under Trump's predecessor, President Joe Biden, a Democrat.

The writers' group Pen America said in a court filing in the Maryland case that the objecting parents wanted "a constitutionally suspect book ban by another name." Pen America reported more than 10,000 books were banned in the last school year.

Parents initially had been allowed to opt their children out of the lessons for religious and other reasons, but the school board reversed course a year later, prompting protests and eventually a lawsuit.

At arguments in April, a lawyer for the school district told the justices that the "opt outs" had become disruptive. Sex education is the only area of instruction in Montgomery schools that students can be excused from, lawyer Alan Schoenfeld said.

The case hit unusually close to home, as three justices live in the county, though they didn't send their children to public schools.

The outcome was a victory for the Republican president, who has complained about individual judges throwing up obstacles to his agenda.

But a conservative majority left open the possibility that the birthright citizenship changes could remain blocked nationwide. Trump's order would deny citizenship to U.S.-born children of people who are in the country illegally.

Birthright citizenship automatically makes&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-birthright-citizenship-immigration-trump-f01b6c942c4969628ef2e774029c6a0e">anyone born in the United States</a>&nbsp;an American citizen, including children born to mothers in the country illegally. The right was enshrined soon after the Civil War in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/800b0a2005254ec58369b9564f53be8f?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">the Constitution’s 14th Amendment</a>.

In a notable Supreme Court decision from 1898, United States v. Wong Kim Ark, the court held that the only children who did not automatically receive U.S. citizenship upon being born on U.S. soil were the children of diplomats, who have allegiance to another government; enemies present in the U.S. during hostile occupation; those born on foreign ships; and those born to members of sovereign Native American tribes.

The U.S. is among about 30 countries where birthright citizenship — the principle of jus soli or “right of the soil” — is applied. Most are in the Americas, and Canada and Mexico are among them.

Trump and his supporters have argued that there should be tougher standards for becoming an American citizen, which he called “a priceless and profound gift” in the executive order he signed on his first day in office.

The Trump administration has asserted that children of noncitizens are not&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-birthright-citizenship-trump-immigration-735d28a2572f623f199f97b3bc97644a">“subject to the jurisdiction”</a>&nbsp;of the United States, a phrase used in the amendment, and therefore are not entitled to citizenship.

But states, immigrants and rights groups that have sued to block the executive order have accused the administration of trying to unsettle the broader understanding of birthright citizenship that has been accepted since the amendment’s adoption.

Judges have uniformly ruled against the administration.

The Justice Department had argued that individual judges lack the power to give nationwide effect to their rulings.

The Trump administration instead wanted the justices to allow Trump’s plan to go into effect for everyone except the handful of people and groups that sued. Failing that, the administration argued that the plan could remain blocked for now in the 22 states that sued. New Hampshire is covered by a separate order that is not at issue in this case.

As a further fallback, the administration asked “at a minimum” to be allowed to make public announcements about how it plans to carry out the policy if it eventually is allowed to take effect.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bill Moyers, the former White House press secretary who became one of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/television">television’s</a>&nbsp;most honored journalists, masterfully using a visual medium to illuminate a world of ideas, died Thursday at age 91.

Moyer died in a New York City hospital, according to longtime friend Tom Johnson, the former CEO of CNN and an assistant to Moyers during Lyndon B. Johnson's administration. He did not cite Moyers' cause of death.

Moyer’s career ranged from youthful Baptist minister to deputy director of the Peace Corps, from Johnson’s press secretary to newspaper publisher, senior news analyst for “The CBS Evening News” and chief correspondent for “CBS Reports.”

But it was for public television that Moyers produced some of TV’s most cerebral and provocative series. In hundreds of hours of PBS programs, he proved at home with subjects ranging from government corruption to modern dance, from drug addiction to media consolidation, from religion to environmental abuse.

In 1988, Moyers produced “The Secret Government” about the Iran-Contra scandal during the Reagan administration and simultaneously published a book under the same name. Around that time, he galvanized viewers with “Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth,” a series of six one-hour interviews with the prominent religious scholar. The accompanying book became a best-seller.

His televised chats with poet Robert Bly almost single-handedly launched the 1990s Men’s Movement, and his 1993 series “Healing and the Mind” had a profound impact on the medical community and on medical education.

In a medium that supposedly abhors “talking heads” — shots of subject and interviewer talking — Moyers came to specialize in just that. He once explained why: “The question is, are the talking heads thinking minds and thinking people? Are they interesting to watch? I think the most fascinating production value is the human face.”

Demonstrating what someone called “a soft, probing style” in the native Texas accent he never lost, Moyers was a humanist who investigated the world with a calm, reasoned perspective, whatever the subject.

From some quarters, he was blasted as a liberal thanks to his links with Johnson and public television, as well as his no-holds-barred approach to investigative journalism. It was a label he didn’t necessarily deny.

“I’m an old-fashion liberal when it comes to being open and being interested in other people’s ideas,” he said during a 2004 radio interview. But Moyers preferred to term himself a “citizen journalist” operating independently, outside the establishment.

Public television (and his self-financed production company) gave him free rein to throw “the conversation of democracy open to all comers,” he said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press.

“I think my peers in commercial television are talented and devoted journalists,” he said another time, “but they’ve chosen to work in a corporate mainstream that trims their talent to fit the corporate nature of American life. And you do not get rewarded for telling the hard truths about America in a profit-seeking environment.”

Over the years, Moyers was showered with honors, including more than 30 Emmys, 11 George Foster Peabody awards, three George Polks and, twice, the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Gold Baton Award for career excellence in broadcast journalism. In 1995, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

Born in Hugo, Oklahoma, on June 5, 1934, Billy Don Moyers was the son of a dirt farmer-truck driver who soon moved his family to Marshall, Texas. High school led him into journalism.

“I wanted to play football, but I was too small. But I found that by writing sports in the school newspaper, the players were always waiting around at the newsstand to see what I wrote,” he recalled.

He worked for the Marshall News Messenger at age 16. Deciding that Bill Moyers was a more appropriate byline for a sportswriter, he dropped the “y” from his name.

He graduated from the University of Texas and earned a master’s in divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained and preached part time at two churches but later decided his call to the ministry “was a wrong number.”

His relationship with Johnson began when he was in college; he wrote the then-senator offering to work in his 1954 re-election campaign. Johnson was impressed and hired him for a summer job. He was back in Johnson’s employ as a personal assistant in the early 1960s and for two years, he worked at the Peace Corps, eventually becoming deputy director.

On the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Moyers was in Austin helping with the presidential trip. He flew back to Washington on Air Force One with newly sworn-in President Johnson, for whom he held various jobs over the ensuing years, including press secretary.

Moyers’ stint as presidential press secretary was marked by efforts to mend the deteriorating relationship between Johnson and the media. But the Vietnam war took its toll and Moyers resigned in December 1966.

Of his departure from the White House, he wrote later, “We had become a war government, not a reform government, and there was no creative role left for me under those circumstances.”

Within three years, the suburban daily had won two Pulitzers. He left the paper in 1970 after the ownership changed. That summer, he traveled 13,000 miles around the country and wrote a best-selling account of his odyssey: “Listening to America: a Traveler Rediscovers His Country.”His next venture was in public television and he won critical acclaim for “Bill Moyers Journal,” a series in which interviews ranged from Gunnar Myrdal, the Swedish economist, to poet Maya Angelou. He was chief correspondent of “CBS Reports” from 1976 to 1978, went back to PBS for three years, and then was senior news analyst for CBS from 1981 to 1986.When CBS cut back on documentaries, he returned to PBS for much less money. “If you have a skill that you can fold with your tent and go wherever you feel you have to go, you can follow your heart’s desire,” he once said.Then in 1986, he and his wife, Judith Davidson Moyers, became their own bosses by forming Public Affairs Television, an independent shop that has not only produced programs such as the 10-hour “In Search of the Constitution,” but also paid for them through its own fundraising efforts.His projects in the 21st century included “Now,” a weekly PBS public affairs program; a new edition of “Bill Moyers Journal” and a podcast covering racism, voting rights and the rise of Donald Trump, among other subjects.Moyers married Judith Davidson, a college classmate, in 1954, and they raised three children, among them the author Suzanne Moyers and author-TV producer William Cope Moyers.
