Louis “Louie” Kuhn, age 92, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, in Hays. Louie was born August 24, 1930, to August and Helen (Dreiling) Kuhn on the family farm which was in rural Victoria, Kansas in Ellis County. Louie attended and graduated from Victoria High School. He married Lorene “Renie” Engel on December 29, 1951, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas. She preceded him in death July 11, 2016. Louie worked in the oilfields primarily as a pumper until his retirement at 81 years of age. He worked for Sun Oil for 30 years and then became an independent Pumper serving many oil companies. Louie was a US Army Veteran serving in the Korean War. Louie was an avid baseball fan and an excellent player as well. He was known for his home run prowess throughout his playing carrier. He was also fan of the Royals. Louie enjoyed many things in his free time including family vacations traveling mostly by car. He enjoyed German meals especially those that used his mothers recipes which Renie cooked often for him and family. Louie had always wanted to be a farmer and for the last twenty years he has done so as a hobby on the land he and Renie purchased twenty years ago. Louie is survived by a son, Louis Kuhn Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska; three daughters, Jackie Sue Kuhn of Topeka, Kansas, Kelly Lynn Kuhn of London, England and Tasha Renee Kuhn Aubey and husband Kelly of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Jim Kuhn of Topeka and Cliff Kuhn; three sisters, Norma Wellbrock of Hays, Ellie Mae Dickerson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Merline Wellbrock of &nbsp;Anthony, Kansas; four grandchildren, Charles A. Dinkel Jr., Jeffrey M. Dinkel, Michelle Renee Davis and Jade Renee Aubey as well as two great grandchildren, Breanna Leigh Dinkel and Alyssa Renee Dinkel. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Renie; a daughter, Renee Mae Kuhn in 1967; a daughter-in-law, Patty Windholz Kuhn; brothers, Elmer, Ralph, Al, Frank and August Jr., and sisters, Alice Haselhorst, Dolorosa Berens, Leona Wellbrock and Juanita Kuhn. Visitation will be Monday, September 19th, at 5 PM – 8 PM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601. A combined parish vigil and rosary service will be 7 PM Monday, September the 19th at the funeral chapel. Tuesday visitation will be 10 AM until service time at The Basilica of St. Fidelis. SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon after a violent altercation with a police officer.

Just after 2 p.m. Friday, an officer stopped a suspicious person walking along the road near SE 23rd and SE Minnesota for having an open container of beer, according to Police Sgt. Gene Dixon. During the stop, the man gave multiple fake names interfering with the officer’s investigation. 

Once the officer could identify the man’s true identity as 45-year-old Kevin N. Teeter Jr., the officer discovered that Teeter had multiple felony warrants for his arrest.

When the officer attempted to take Teeter into custody, Teeter drew a large “Samuraistyle knife,” causing an officer in danger call to be broadcast. The officer pulled out his weapon, and Teeter dropped the sword and ran into the backyard of a nearby house.

A struggle ensued between Teeter and the officer in the backyard. Teeter grabbed a brick and confronted the officer with it. Assisting officers arrived and used less-lethal beanbag rounds in an attempt to disarm Teeter. 

Police eventually took Teeter into custody. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Dixon.

After he was medically cleared, detectives interviewed Teeter and then booked into the Shawnee County Department of requested charges of Two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer, Fugitive from Justice, Outside Agency warrant, Violate offender registration act.

Teeter has previous convictions for rape, aggravated sexual battery and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Police: Kan. sex offender was armed with 'samurai-style' knife

KANSAS CITY, Kan.&nbsp;—&nbsp;Following its first loss in 113 days, the Kansas City Current (9-5-5, 32pts, 1st place) return to Children’s Mercy Park Sunday for one of the clubs most significant matches to date. 

The Current square off with the Portland Thorns (8-3-7, 31pts, T-2nd place) in a match that holds significant postseason implications and could help to determine the winner of the NWSL Shield. 

Sunday’s matchup will stream on Paramount+.

Wednesday, Kansas City’s 13-match unbeaten streak came to an end in a 4-0 road loss to the Chicago Red Stars. A rotated Current squad managed to out-shoot Chicago 12-8, but Kansas City couldn’t quite find a goal. The shutout loss snapped&nbsp;<a>the Current’s</a>&nbsp;13-match scoring streak, which coincided with the team’s unbeaten streak. Chicago forward Mallory Pugh managed two goals and an assist in the Red Stars’ victory.

Portland has not played since Friday, Sept. 9, a 2-0 road triumph over the Orlando Pride. After peppering Orlando’s goal throughout the opening half-hour, the Thorns broke through in the 31st minute with a well-worked goal by forward Yazmeen Ryan. Orlando threatened to equalize, but Portland eventually doubled its advantage in the 65th minute with an outside-the-box strike from midfielder Hina Sugita.

ALL TO PLAY FOR Coach Potter, LaBonta and midfielder Desiree Scott spoke about the importance of not letting one loss define the team as just three matches&nbsp;<a>remain</a>&nbsp;in the 2022 regular season following Wednesday’s loss. Fortunately, Kansas City won’t have to wait long for another opportunity to bounce back from Wednesday’s loss and start a new streak.

Kansas City welcomes the Thorns Sunday for the second time in the 2022 regular season. The Current and Portland previously met April 30, the first match of the regular season and the Thorns won 3-0. Now, nearly five months since that meeting, Kansas City and Portland sit in first and second place, respectively, in the NWSL standings. The Current have just three matches remaining in the regular season while the Thorns have four, placing further emphasis on a positive result from Kansas City’s perspective.

While Kansas City can’t build on its impressive unbeaten streak Sunday, it can make club history with a positive result. The Current are 0-4-1 all-time against Portland in all competitions and have scored just one goal on Portland in five meetings. If the Current are to separate themselves from a congested NWSL table by weekend’s end, bouncing back with a strong performance against Portland is a must.

DEFENSIVE SHUFFLE In the 90th minute of Wednesday’s loss, Ball picked up a yellow card that ultimately proved costly. One of the stalwarts of the Current’s defense in 2022, the caution marked Ball’s fifth booking of the season, meaning she will receive a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation.

Ball has appeared in every single one of the Current’s regular&nbsp;<a>season</a>&nbsp;matches and had started 10 consecutive matches before Sunday.

Potter has a few options for replacing Ball in the center of the Current’s defense. Defenders Taylor Leach and Alex Loera are candidates, though each played 45 minutes against Chicago. Notably, Kristen Edmonds also played 90 minutes against both Chicago and Gotham Sunday. Rookie defender Jenna Winebrenner made a substitute appearance in her first match action since returning from injury in August.

LOOKING BACK AT THE STREAK Even though Kansas City’s unbeaten streak came to an end Wednesday, head coach Matt Potter’s squad went on a truly historic run that sent shockwaves through the NWSL.

After the Current lost 1-0 to OL Reign May 25, the team sat in 11th place in the NWSL standings with a record of 0-4-1. Over the next 13 games, Kansas City earned 31 points, won nine matches and allowed just 14 goals. All those figures ranked first in the NWSL, which contributed heavily to the Current’s ascent to first place in the league for the first time in franchise history.

Several Current players have put together impressive individual seasons in 2022, with their performances largely coinciding with the team’s unbeaten run. Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta and forwards Cece Kizer and Kristen Hamilton have all scored a franchise-record six goals and goalkeeper AD Franch picked up her 40th career shutout in the team’s 1-0 victory over NJ/NY Gotham FC September 11. LaBonta and Franch were named to both the July and Aug. NWSL Best XI of the Month, while defenders Elizabeth Ball (August), Hailie Mace (July) and Kristen Edmonds (July) also received monthly honors.

The Current’s 13-match unbeaten streak stands as the second-longest unbeaten streak in NWSL history. The team’s five-match road winning streak, snapped with Wednesday’s loss, was tied for the longest such road winning streak in league history.

The Current square off with the Portland Thorns (8-3-7, 31pts, T-2nd place) in a match that holds significant postseason implications and could help to determine the winner of the NWSL Shield. Sunday’s matchup will stream on Paramount+.Wednesday, Kansas City’s 13-match unbeaten streak came to an end in a 4-0 road loss to the Chicago Red Stars. A rotated Current squad managed to out-shoot Chicago 12-8, but Kansas City couldn’t quite find a goal. The shutout loss snapped&nbsp;<a>the Current’s</a>&nbsp;13-match scoring streak, which coincided with the team’s unbeaten streak. Chicago forward Mallory Pugh managed two goals and an assist in the Red Stars’ victory.Portland has not played since Friday, Sept. 9, a 2-0 road triumph over the Orlando Pride. After peppering Orlando’s goal throughout the opening half-hour, the Thorns broke through in the 31st minute with a well-worked goal by forward Yazmeen Ryan. JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 3:30a.m. Sept. 14, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 Chevrolet sedan for a traffic infraction near 110th Road and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A Jackson County K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics in the car. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of cocaine, an additional controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. 

The front seat passenger, Semaja L. Willform, 20, of Merriam, had an outstanding felony warrant from Johnson County for burglary. Willform was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail and was booked on requested charges of possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, according to Morse.

KANSAS CITY,&nbsp;Kan.&nbsp;— The Kansas City Monarchs (3-2) championship road came to a heartbreaking end Thursday night at Legends Field as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (4-2) punched their ticket to the American Association Championship Series (Miles Wolff Cup) with a 4-1 win. 

The RedHawks got stellar starting pitching from true rookie Peyton Wigginton (1-0), who held the league’s leading offense in check scattering six hits over six shutout innings.

The RedHawks grabbed the lead in the top of the third inning with a lead off single by Evan Alexander and a two-run home run from Christian Correa to left to make it 2-0 off Monarchs starter Jalen Miller (0-1).

While Wigginton was able to hold the Monarchs off the board, Kansas City did have chances to get the offense going.&nbsp;The Monarchs got a runner on in each of the first four innings and had the bases loaded in the fourth, but Wigginton was able to make the key pitches to keep Kansas City at bay.

The RedHawks got a one out double in the fifth and scored on a wide throw at first on a ground ball to the deep right side of the infield from Ryan Grotjohn.&nbsp;The Monarchs second sacker made a great diving play in a deep shift in shallow rightfield, but the throw was low and bounced wide of first baseman Casey Gillaspie for an unearned run.

The “Fargos” would tack on another run in the top of the sixth on a lead off double from John Silviano off Jordan Martinson.&nbsp;Manuel Boscan hit a ball to short that Pete Kozma threw to third to get Silviano, but the throw was low and Darnell Sweeney could not come up with the ball to put runners at the corners. Alec Olund hit a shallow fly to right for the first out, but Evan Alexander hit a sac fly to center to make it a 4-0 score in favor of the RedHawks.

Kansas City would load the bases once again against Wigginton in the sixth, but the lefty would once again make a big pitch to get out of the inning with two outs.&nbsp;Tanner Riley came in for the RedHawks in the seventh and walk J.C. Escarra then get a double play ball off the bat of

Kevin Santa.&nbsp;The rookie right-hander would then issue back to back walks to Mallex Smith and Darnell Sweeney before Joe Jones came in to get the final out. The Monarchs lone run came in the home half of the eighth inning. Jan Hernandez singled off Jones with one out. Casey Gillaspie then doubled to left to put runners at second the third. Pete Kozma struck out but a wild pitch from Jones brought home Hernandez for the only Monarchs run. Jones would retire J.C. Monarchs season comes to an end; RedHawks advance

A retired Salina registered nurse and addiction counselor with a long career in mental health and addiction treatment will talk about her children’s book during a public presentation next week.

The free 20-minute presentation by author LaNay Meier is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on the second floor of the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth Street.&nbsp; A question-and-answer session will follow. The presentation is open to the public.&nbsp;

Meier’s self-published book, The Feelings Umbrella was written to help children learn their inner feelings and express them in positive, healthy ways.&nbsp; The author encourages parents, grandparents and educators to read her book with the young people in their lives.&nbsp; Meier designed the book primarily for preschoolers to age 8.

“My journey started when I was very young,” Meier said.&nbsp; “I grew up in an environment that didn’t understand that children need to learn and be allowed to express their true feelings.”

In her book, the author contrasts an umbrella with stormy weather protection, an analogy that most people keep their feelings and thoughts deep inside, expressing different, sometimes unhealthy, behaviors on the outside.

A native of Hanston, in Hodgeman County, Meier worked with families through nonprofit organizations in the Salina area for more than 25 years.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a high-speed chase on I-70 that sent a woman to the hospital.

Just before 2:30p.m. Monday, a K9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a silver 2009 Lexus LS on I-70 near the California Ave. exit for failing to signal a lane change, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. During the traffic stop, the driver fled the scene, initiating a pursuit. 

The pursuit went southbound on SE Deer Creek Parkway, eastbound on SE 21st Street, westbound on SE 21st Street and then eastbound on I-70. At some point, while the vehicle was still moving, a female passenger exited the vehicle.

The pursuit continued eastbound on I-70 out of Shawnee County. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office successfully deployed stop sticks. The vehicle’s tires began to deflate. The pursuit ended just east of Lawrence in Douglas County.

Deputies took 47-year-old Darryl D. Minor of Kansas City, Kan. into custody without further incident.

Minor was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony flee and elude, driving with a suspended driver’s license, failure to signal turn, possession of marijuana and speeding.

The female passenger was transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response (AMR) with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Highway Patrol Air Support Unit and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted with this incident.

Sheriff: Woman jumps from from car during I-70 police chase

A Colorado man and a woman were arrested Monday afternoon after leading a trooper on a chase from Hays to Russell with speeds that reached 130 miles per hour.

At 3:36 p.m. Monday, a trooper tried to stop a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 31-year-old Anthony B. Casados of Parker, Colo., at mile marker 158 on Interstate 70 at Hays, said Trooper Tod Hileman of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The motorcycle fled eastbound on I-70 and exited the interstate at Russell at the U.S. 281 junction. The motorcycle ran out of gas about a mile south of Russell.

The driver dropped the motorcycle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later, Hileman said.

Casados and his passenger, 42-year-old Megan C. Horstmann of Denver, were arrested on a requested charge of fleeing and alluding. Casados was also arrested on a requested charge of driving with a revoked driver's license.

Both suspects were booked into the Ellis County Jail. No one was injured in the pursuit.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —After the first weeks of the school year that saw several students in USD 259-Wichita taken into custody for allegedly having a gun at school, the school board on Monday voted 7-0 to approve the funds, over $1 million dollars, to purchase automatic screening devices for the district's high schools.

Superintendent Alicia Thompson in a message to the district&nbsp; before Labor Day wrote, " You are likely aware of a rash of incidents relating to unacceptable behaviors in several of our high schools. Public attention has been drawn to fights and students gathering to video the incident, as well as incidents of students bringing a weapon to school. Thankfully there have been no threats with the weapons, and no injuries during the fights, but we take each of these incidents seriously. The actions of a small number of our students who cause commotion and fear in our schools is&nbsp;completely unacceptable, and it must stop.

The vast majority of our students come to school to learn, grow, make friends and explore opportunities for future careers. We commend our students who do the right thing, and when something doesn’t look or feel right, students should be reminded that if they “see something they should say something.”&nbsp;

Parents, regardless of the age of your child, please make sure they also know that disruptive behavior that threatens the learning environment of their school, and causes fear or disruption,&nbsp;will not be tolerated in our schools. While we know our community continues to deal with the stresses of social isolation and economic concerns, there is&nbsp;absolutely no tolerance for this behavior coming into our schools.

On August 29, police took a student at West High School into custody for having a gun on campus. On August 30, police took a Wichita Heights student with a gun on campus into custody.&nbsp; On Sept. 1, a Wichita Police Department School Resource Officer was working at East High School when they were notified by school staff of a student that was possibly in possession of a firearm, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

School staff searched a 16-year-old male student and found a handgun in his possession. The gun was seized, and the 16-year-old was booked into the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center for possession of a firearm by a juvenile and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

On August 29, Security staff at Wichita Southeast High School were forced to use pepper spray during an incident in the cafeteria.

"There was an altercation at the school involving 7 or 8 students during lunch that caused a large crowd to gather," according to USD 259 media relations manager Susan Arensman.

"The school security officer used pepper spray in the area to disperse the crowd. No students were directly sprayed. No one was injured."

"When situations get where we cannot get students to comply and the learning environment is deemed unsafe we may have to resort to these measures, School principal Ben Mitchell wrote in a note sent to parents and guardians.
