“I cannot live without books,” said Thomas Jefferson.&nbsp;

Stephen King described books as “uniquely portable magic” and “the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent.”&nbsp;

And author Jhumpa Lahiri wrote: “That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”&nbsp;

The benefits of books are now being discovered and shared in a new, independent bookstore in a&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Kansas. Jennifer Kassebaum is the owner of Flint Hills Books in Council Grove.&nbsp;

Kassebaum went to the University of Kansas and earned a law degree at the KU law school, where she met and married Bill Kassebaum. They now have a cow-calf operation on a ranch near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Burdick, population 62 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

Kassebaum practiced law, worked as assistant general counsel at K-State and later at Wichita State before taking early retirement. As she thought about what she would like to be involved with next, one topic kept surfacing: Books.&nbsp;

“I always enjoyed books,” Kassebaum said. She thought about opening an independent bookstore. After researching the idea, including talking to several independent booksellers, Kassebaum leased a space in a beautiful former bank building in the nearby town of Council Grove. &nbsp;

Other bookstore owners encouraged her to take the American Booksellers Association training, so she did. At one of the training sessions, the instructor stated that a successful bookstore should be at least 1,200 square feet in size and be located in a town of at least 10,000 population.&nbsp;

Uh oh. Kassebaum’s store met neither criterion.&nbsp;

After a lot of thought, she decided to proceed with her store in downtown Council Grove.&nbsp;&nbsp;The grand opening of the store was in April 2021. &nbsp;

The bookstore’s website states: “Flint Hills Books&nbsp;is a general interest bookstore nestled in the breathtaking grandeur of the Flint Hills.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The store is “where a deep love for the majestic Flint Hills and a passion for books collide.”&nbsp;

Flint Hills Books offers a curated collection of books, puzzles, and other activities and gifts. Kassebaum has simple but high standards for selecting books:&nbsp;&nbsp;“I include books I’ve read, books I want to read, and books that I think a good bookstore should have.”&nbsp;

There are bestsellers, new books, fiction, non-fiction, young adult books and more. Her store offers book-signings and a children’s section as well as cards, puzzles and gifts. The bookstore website has a section for audio books and online shopping.&nbsp;

Julie Hower, president of the Farmers &amp; Drovers Bank in Council Grove, pointed out that there has been a resurgence of woman-owned businesses in that community’s downtown.&nbsp;

For example, an independent coffee house named Watts Coffee is right down the street from Kassebaum’s bookstore, and a new brewery named Riverbank Brewing Company is on the other side of the street. There are several more.&nbsp;

These independent businesses have found ways to work together. Kassebaum partnered with Watts Coffee to produce a co-branded espresso-flavored gourmet chocolate bar. The label of the chocolate bar, produced by Sweet Granada Chocolate Company in Emporia, bears both the Watts Coffee and Flint Hills Books logos with the saying, “Because nothing is better than a good book and a great cup of coffee.”&nbsp;

Kassebaum is also partnering with Riverbank Brewing for a monthly event called Books &amp; Brews. That includes an evening social hour at the brewery where Kassebaum speaks about upcoming book releases. “I do as much locally as I can,” she said.&nbsp;

“Cami San Romani, owner of Cami’s Cakes and The Wooden Spoon, is an amazing baker whose artful cookies make bookstore events so special,” Kassebaum said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Lindsey Patnode, owner of Flowers by Lindsey, has helped me with elegant flower arrangements for special events.”&nbsp;

NOW THAT'S RURAL: Jennifer Kassebaum, Flint Hills Books

Phyllis Lorraine (Spargur) Crawford, 89, of Belleville, Kansas, went to her heavenly home on Saturday morning, October 8, 2022, at the Belleville Health Care Center.

Phyllis was born on February 7, 1933 in Wellington, KS, but grew up in Belle Plaine, KS.

Her parents were Hazel (Sturgis) Spargur and Jack (Charles Howard) Spargur. She was the oldest of five children. 

Phyllis was active in sports, a cheerleader, a straight A student, working through high school at the local drug store, and an avid reader.&nbsp; As a child, she would crawl up in a tree with an apple and a book and read for hours. 

She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in May 1951. When she was an 8th grader she met her future husband, Curtis Crawford;&nbsp; she just didn't know it yet, but he did! She and Curtis didn't have their first date until she was out of school and she was working for Boeing.

Theirs was a true love story! They married on May 24, 1952 in Champagne-Urbanna, IL, while Curtis was serving in the Air Force. She worked while he served, everything from an elevator operator to a secretary for an Air Force officer. 

To their union they had four children. Their oldest, Pam, was born in Spokane, WA, while they were stationed there. In 1955 they moved back to Wichita, KS, and they added three more children, Jana, Julie, and John. 

She was a full-time homemaker, Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and PTA officer. Her love of reading never died, but she no longer climbed a tree to do it!&nbsp; Sunday dinners were a tradition enjoyed by the whole family. Phyllis was a phenomenal cook, her meatloaf and roast beef dinners were favorites, along with her pies.&nbsp; She was a seamstress and like her mom before her, could whip up an outfit or alter a dress two hours before her daughter's Sweetheart Dance!&nbsp;

The family moved to Belleville in the summer of 1970 after a year in Manhattan, Kansas. 

Shortly after that she began working at Republic County Hospital in the medical records department. She took correspondence courses to earn her certificate in medical records and procedures, becoming the director of that department.&nbsp; She worked for the hospital for 29 years.&nbsp;

She was able to travel to many places with Curtis, even taking an African safari.

 After Curtis passed away in 2018, much of her enthusiasm went with him. But the grandchildren and great-grands and great-great-grands brought the sparkle back. She even sponsored many children over the years through Child Fund. Phyllis was the quiet strength behind her family, always loving, encouraging, and supporting them.

Phyllis was a 51-year member of the Central Christian Church of Belleville.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husband Curtis, Jr., her son John Curtis, a grandson, Jacob Weatherhead, two brothers, Jack and Eldon Spargur, and a sister, Carol Cushman.

She is survived by her three daughters, Pam (Brad) Chatfield, Jana (Ronnie) Blad, and Julie (Curt) Weatherhead; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Lisa) Blad, Sarah (John) Racine, Sam (Christy) Blad, John Ketchum, Katie Ketchum, Alexis (Kevin) Wheat, Sophia (Brian) Hardwick, Samantha (Tyler) Jensen, J.C. ( Naomi) Crawford, and Cesilee (Logan) Copple; 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis is also&nbsp;survived by one sister, Lillian (Bob) Ray, sister-in-law Pat Spargur, and brother -in-law Ronnie Cushman, and&nbsp;many nieces and nephews

Memorial services will be Saturday, October 15th, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at the Central Christian Church in Belleville, with Pastor Jacob Rice officiating. Burial will follow at the Belleville City Cemetery.

Friend's may sign Phyllis's book on Friday, October 14th, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville.

She was the oldest of five children. Phyllis was active in sports, a cheerleader, a straight A student, working through high school at the local drug store, and an avid reader.&nbsp; As a child, she would crawl up in a tree with an apple and a book and read for hours. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in May 1951. When she was an 8th grader she met her future husband, Curtis Crawford;&nbsp; she just didn't know it yet, but he did! She and Curtis didn't have their first date until she was out of school and she was working for Boeing.Theirs was a true love story! They married on May 24, 1952 in Champagne-Urbanna, IL, while Curtis was serving in the Air Force. She worked while he served, everything from an elevator operator to a secretary for an Air Force officer. To their union they had four children. Their oldest, Pam, was born in Spokane, WA, while they were stationed there. In 1955 they moved back to Wichita, KS, and they added three more children, Jana, Julie, and John. She was a full-time homemaker, Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and PTA officer. Her love of reading never died, but she no longer climbed a tree to do it!&nbsp; Sunday dinners were a tradition enjoyed by the whole family. Phyllis was a phenomenal cook, her meatloaf and roast beef dinners were favorites, along with her pies.&nbsp; She was a seamstress and like her mom before her, could whip up an outfit or alter a dress two hours before her daughter's Sweetheart Dance!&nbsp;The family moved to Belleville in the summer of 1970 after a year in Manhattan, Kansas. Shortly after that she began working at Republic County Hospital in the medical records department. She took correspondence courses to earn her certificate in medical records and procedures, becoming the director of that department.&nbsp; She worked for the hospital for 29 years.&nbsp;She was able to travel to many places with Curtis, even taking an African safari. After Curtis passed away in 2018, much of her enthusiasm went with him. But the grandchildren and great-grands and great-great-grands brought the sparkle back. She even sponsored many children over the years through Child Fund. Phyllis was the quiet strength behind her family, always loving, encouraging, and supporting them.Phyllis was a 51-year member of the Central Christian Church of Belleville.Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husband Curtis, Jr., her son John Curtis, a grandson, Jacob Weatherhead, two brothers, Jack and Eldon Spargur, and a sister, Carol Cushman.She is survived by her three daughters, Pam (Brad) Chatfield, Jana (Ronnie) Blad, and Julie (Curt) Weatherhead; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Lisa) Blad, Sarah (John) Racine, Sam (Christy) Blad, John Ketchum, Katie Ketchum, Alexis (Kevin) Wheat, Sophia (Brian) Hardwick, Samantha (Tyler) Jensen, J.C. ( Naomi) Crawford, and Cesilee (Logan) Copple; 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis is also&nbsp;survived by one sister, Lillian (Bob) Ray, sister-in-law Pat Spargur, and brother -in-law Ronnie Cushman, and&nbsp;many nieces and nephewsMemorial services will be Saturday, October 15th, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at the Central Christian Church in Belleville, with Pastor Jacob Rice officiating. BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new drug charges after an arrest,

Just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a patrol sergeant with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in the 10 block of Southwest 110 Avenue for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The occupant of the 1997 Chevrolet Venture was identified as Corban Cale, age 30 of Pawnee Rock. 

The sergeant became suspicious of drug activity and the Sheriff’s Office K9 Maxx and handler were called to the scene. Maxx alerted to the presence of controlled substances in the vehicle.

Further investigation revealed Cale was in possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia as well as items used to distribute methamphetamine.

Cale was arrested without incident and transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond

A Salina man has been arrested in connection to burglary cases in both Saline County and Dickinson County.

In mid-September, a number of items were reported missing from a property in the 4100 block of E. North Street. Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said items missing included the following.

In all, the owners of the property estimated a total loss of approximately $70,000, Saline County Sheriff's Investigator Cody Trower, said. 

On Thursday, a vehicle stolen out of Dickinson County was found abandoned in Saline County. A conversation between Saline County Sheriff's personnel and Dickinson County Sheriff's personnel while dealing with the stolen car revealed that Dickinson County Sheriff's personnel also were investing a Solomon burglary that was similar in nature to the one on E. North Street in Saline County, Trower said.

The next day, sheriff's investigators from both counties met to discuss the matter.  

Trower said Dickinson County Sheriff's investigators had developed a suspect and were planning to request a search warrant for the Salina residence of Michael Kohman, 42. The residence is located in the 300 block of N. 11th Street.

On Tuesday, Saline County Sheriff's personnel assisted Dickinson County Sheriff's personnel with the execution of the search warrant for Kohman's residence.

Trower said that while they were clearing the residence to make sure Kohman was the only person inside, Saline County Sheriff's personnel saw a large amount of the items that were stolen from the E. North Street location. He said that 70-80 percent of the items stolen from the E. North Street location were found in Kohman's residence.

During the execution of the search warrant, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia allegedly were found in Kohman's residence, Melander said. Additionally, it was believed that Kohman used the victim's own vehicle that was on the property to transport the items to a truck before returing the vehicle to the original location. 

Kohman was booked into the Salina County Jail on the following requested charges.

Requested charges in Dickinson County are pending. Both investigations are continuing.

Similar burglaries in 2 counties lead to arrest of Salina man

UPDATE: 11 a.m. Wednesday: The Salina Police Department this morning released additional information about the discharge of a firearm outside Salina South High School. It is as follows.

On 10-11-2022, at school dismissal, a vehicle occupied by several individuals was leaving the west parking lot of Salina South High School, 730 E. Magnolia. Just before turning East onto East Magnolia, an occupant of the vehicle was seen firing a weapon from the passenger’s side of the car in the direction of the school building. No injuries or damage were reported.

A witness provided the police department with vehicle and suspect information. The driver of the vehicle, Tyler Kerr (age 17, South High Student), was located at his residence, and the suspect vehicle was located parked around the corner from Kerr’s home.

Through their investigation, police detectives established probable cause to believe that Elijah Schmidt (age 16, Salina Virtual Innovation Academy) was the person who fired the handgun from the passenger’s side of the vehicle and that Robert Wood (age 15, South High Student) was identified as having possessed the handgun in the vehicle while on school property.

The following charges are being requested:

· Tyler Kerr - Criminal Discharge of a Firearm and Obstructing Apprehension.

· Elijah Schmidt - Criminal Discharge of a Firearm, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, and Criminal Use of a Weapon.

· Robert Wood - Criminal Use of a Weapon.

Kerr, Schmidt and Wood have been booked into juvenile detention. At this time we have no information to indicate that the handgun used was ever in the school building.

The Salina Police Department takes these threats seriously and will work to identify suspect(s) and make an arrest as quickly as possible when probable cause exists. This is the second example where citizen information has led to the quick arrest of individuals involved in criminal acts committed at Salina South High School. ROME (AP) — Pope Francis is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, the landmark meetings that brought the 2,000-year-old Catholic Church into the modern era, amid continued disagreement about what the council taught that divides the faithful today.

Francis celebrated a Mass on Tuesday in honor of St. John XXIII, who convened the council and presided over its opening sessions. Tuesday’s commemoration opens with a reading of John’s inaugural speech and ends with a re-enactment of the candle-lit procession that lit up St. Peter’s Square on the night of Oct. 11, 1962.

On that night, the “good pope” came to the window of the Apostolic Palace and delivered his famous “moonlight speech” to the thousands of people who had gathered below. Whereas pre-Vatican II popes usually spoke in formal terms, John surprised the crowd with an impromptu, pastoral speech urging the faithful to go home to their children and give them a hug and tell them “this is the caress of the pope.”

The council would last for another three years and outlive John, who died in 1963 of stomach cancer. But when it was over, council fathers had agreed to major changes in the life of the church, such as allowing Mass to be celebrated in local languages rather than Latin and strengthening the role of laity in the everyday life of the church. The council also encouraged efforts to improve relations among Christians and revolutionized the church’s relations with Jews, including the step to remove the phrase “perfidious Jews” from the liturgy.

Francis, 85, is the first pope to have been ordained after the council, and his priorities are very much inspired by it.

“Above all peace, above all the poor church,” said Vatican II historian Alberto Melloni. In a telephone interview, Melloni also pointed to Francis' insistence on a “synodal” or decentralized church, with an emphasis on laity. The latter is clearly evident in his decision to allow laypeople, including women, to head Vatican offices and in the the two-year “synod” process in which ordinary Catholic faithful have contributed their thoughts on the life and mission of the church.

But Vatican II still very much divides the church, with progressives seeing it as a break from the past and conservatives seeing it as fully in line with church tradition and chafing at the “spirit of Vatican II” progressive read of it. Francis has in some ways exacerbated those divisions by re-imposing restrictions on the celebration of the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass.

“John XXIII did not convoke Vatican II to reinvent Catholicism,” writes church historian George Weigel in his new book “To Sanctify the World: The Vital Legacy of Vatican II.”

“As he put it in his opening address, the council’s ‘greatest concern’ must be the more effective presentation of Catholic truth in full” through a new language and vocabulary that could be understood in the modern world, Weigel wrote in excerpts recently published in the Wall Street Journal.

Vatican II coincided with the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the United States and Russia came as close as they ever had to nuclear war. Looking ahead to Tuesday’s anniversary of Vatican II, Francis noted over the weekend that Russia is threatening to use its nuclear arsenal in its war in Ukraine.

“Why can’t we learn from history?” Francis asked. “Even in those times, there was grave conflict and tensions, but they chose the path of peace.”

Friends of the Salina Public Library are hoping to find new homes for thousands of books and other items during the organization's upcoming used book sale.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, used book sale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, romance as well as general fiction. We have movies, music CDs, and games. We have expanded our offering of materials for children and young adults, so I really think there is something for everyone.”

“And our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill a bag with books for just $5,” Laura Rhodenbaugh, Friends treasurer added.

The Friends of the Salina Public Library Used Book Sale is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday in the library, 301 W. Elm Street, downstairs in the Youth Services Annex beside the Imagination Station.

And if you're a member of the Friends of the Salina Public Library, you can get in a day early, from 4:30-7 p.m. Friday!

Not a Friends member? Library card holders can sign up to become a Friends member at the door of the book sale. The cost is $10 a year for an individual membership and $25 a year for a family membership. In addition to getting first dibs on used book sales, Friends members do no pay fines on overdue library materials, the organization noted in a news release.

The book sale is a fundraiser for the Friends organization, a volunteer, board-guided, membership organization that acts as a booster club for the library. Some Friends’ activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and youth activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplies for the CLASS program, and providing scholarships for teen library volunteers, the organization noted.

MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have a suspect in custody.

On Saturday, sheriff's deputies were called to the Miami County Medical Center in Paola after report of a stabbing, according to a media release.&nbsp; Deputies learned two brothers had been involved in an altercation at a rural home in the 32000 Block of Lone Star Road.

Investigators learned the brothers got into an argument about one of them eating the other's sandwich, according to the sheriff's department. The dispute became physical and one brother stabbed the other in the leg causing non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; A personal vehicle transported the victim to the medical center. Deputies located and arrested the other brother and booked him into the Miami County Jail. The sheriff's office did not released the names of those involved.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There was a time in Travis Kelce's career that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end could simply line up against a linebacker, or even a safety, and know that his speed and agility would be able to get him open downfield.

Kelce turned 33 this week, though, and those days are slowly slipping away. Yet what he has lost in athleticism Kelce has made up for in experience. You'll see him slowly going in motion, or quickly moving across the formation, setting defenders up even before the snap and giving him just that extra bit of space to allow him to continually make plays.

"He's just smarter as a player," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "That's the biggest thing. He knows how to get himself open. He knows how to use other people and other parts of the concept to get himself open. And he's smart about how he blocks, how he can pin guys and get us in the right position. I think he's just continued to evolve."

He is once again tops among NFL tight ends, too, with 26 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns.

It might be a stretch to say that Kelce, who along with the Chiefs play the Raiders on Monday night, has revolutionized the tight end position. That would be slighting those who came before him: Ozzie Newsome, Dave Casper and Keith Jackson in the day, and Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten and Rob Gronkowski in more recent years.

But it's safe to say that Kelce has made what was long considered a decidedly unsexy position a lot more appealing, and in turn helped to make players such as Raiders tight end Darren Waller high-priced assets for their teams.

Waller has 16 catches for 175 yards and three scores heading into Monday night's game in Kansas City.

Make no mistake: Kelce still does plenty of down-in-the-dirt blocking, the stuff often overlooked and underappreciated, but that helped Kansas City run for nearly 200 yards in last week's 41-31 win at Tampa Bay. But he also makes plenty of those spectacular catches and long, loping downfield runs that makes Kelce a regular on the highlight reels.

"Everybody kind of giggles and laughs when you see (Mahomes) throw an underhand pass to a fullback or a shovel pass, or Kelce lines up at quarterback in the red zone and then runs the ball in, or runs an option, or shovel pass — whatever it is," Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels said.

"What's always impressed me is how precise they are and how detailed they are when they do those things. Look, players like to run things that are run. They enjoy that."

Nobody seems to enjoy it more than Kelce, who could sometimes come off as surly early in his career, especially when things weren't going his way. But while he still has a fiercely competitive streak, Kelce has matured as he aged, and what the Chiefs have now is a locker room leader who is just as good with fans and reporters as his teammates.

One that continues to etch his name in record books, too.

Kelce has caught a pass in 130 consecutive games, one behind Gonzalez for the second-longest streak in franchise history and the second-longest active streak behind DeAndre Hopkins in the NFL. Kelce has 730 catches in all, putting him within shouting distance of Witten's 806 for the most among tight ends over their first 10 seasons in the NFL.

Last week against the Buccaneers, Kelce had nine catches for 92 yards and a score, giving him 9,328 yards for his career and moving him past Gronkowski for fifth most among NFL tight ends.

Next on the list is Shannon Sharpe with 10,060, with Antonio Gates, Witten and Gonzalez the only others ahead of him.

What about touchdowns? Kelce has 63 of those, one behind Jamaal Charles for fourth on the Chiefs' career list.

It's not as if his production has tapered with age, either.

The pride of Westlake, Ohio, finished with 92 catches for 1,125 yards and nine touchdowns last season, his sixth straight eclipsing 1,000 yards.

And considering Kelce has three more years left on his contract after this one, and he insists that he plans to play it to completion or beyond, there is no reason to think more records won't fall.

"He is getting up there," Mahomes admitted. I'm going to try to keep him here as long as possible. I promise you. He's not taking any screens like, 80 yards anymore, I don't think. But he's still going to make some production on the field."

Yet what he has lost in athleticism Kelce has made up for in experience. You'll see him slowly going in motion, or quickly moving across the formation, setting defenders up even before the snap and giving him just that extra bit of space to allow him to continually make plays."He's just smarter as a player," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "That's the biggest thing. He knows how to get himself open. He knows how to use other people and other parts of the concept to get himself open. And he's smart about how he blocks, how he can pin guys and get us in the right position. I think he's just continued to evolve."He is once again tops among NFL tight ends, too, with 26 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns.It might be a stretch to say that Kelce, who along with the Chiefs play the Raiders on Monday night, has revolutionized the tight end position.
