SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent armed robbery and made three arrests.

Just before 3a.m. September 3, police responded to a robbery in the 300 block of SE Lawrence Street in Topeka.&nbsp; Officers found two individuals who had been assaulted and robbed with a firearm. As a result of the investigation, detectives identified a suspect as Cristian Soto, 20, of Topeka.

Police found Soto on September 6, arrested and booked into jail on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery; Armed w/dangerous weapon, Aggravated battery; Knowingly use physical contact in angry/rude manner w/weapon, Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon and Theft.

As a result of this investigation, two additional suspects were identified as Darian J. Isley, 20, of Topeka, and Raul A. Retana Jr., 22, of Topeka. On Wednesday, police located both suspects and made arrests.

Darian J. Isley is being held on requested charges of&nbsp; Aggravated assault; Use of deadly weapon, Aggravated Robbery; Armed w/dangerous weapon, Theft, Criminal possession of a weapon; convicted of person/drug felony; firearm used in crime and a Warrant.

Raul A. Retana is in jail on requested charges of Aggravated battery; Knowingly use physical contact in angry/rude manner w/weapon, Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon, Aggravated Robbery; Armed w/dangerous weapon and Theft.

3 suspects in violent Kansas armed robbery captured

NEW YORK (AP) — Rupert Murdoch, the 92-year-old media magnate who created Fox News, is stepping down as leader of both Fox's parent company and his News Corp. media holdings.

Fox said Thursday that Murdoch would become chairman emeritus of both companies. His son, Lachlan, will become&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fox-election-lawsuit-new-york-oregon-c77a0630afca5de243a96265c5815b33">News Corp.</a>&nbsp;chairman and continue as chief executive officer of Fox Corp.

Lachlan Murdoch said that “we are grateful that he will serve as chairman emeritus and know he will continue to provide valued counsel to both companies.”

Besides Fox News, Murdoch started the Fox broadcast network, the first to successfully challenge the Big Three of ABC, CBS and NBC. He is owner of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post.

Murdoch is a force in the conservative world, where Fox News Channel has profoundly influenced television and the nation's politics since its start in 1996.

Murdoch vowed in a letter to employees that he would remain engaged at Fox.

“In my new role, I can guarantee you that I will be involved every day in the contest of ideas, Murdoch wrote. “Our companies are communities, and I will be an active member of our community. I will be watching our broadcasts with a critical eye, reading our newspapers and websites and books with much interest.”

As the Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus settles into the new academic year, the campus continues to elevate the goal of developing global leaders on the campus. 

K-State Salina now offers a new leadership course taught in collaboration with K-State's Staley School of Leadership. All incoming students participate in this introductory course, ensuring leadership competencies are developed for all K-State Salina students. Students who complete the course will also have the option to continue their education in leadership and obtain a minor in leadership studies.

The leadership studies minor is a complement to any degree option. During these courses, students will work toward personal leadership development and a practical framework to further self-awareness, values and purpose. The academic minor, through the Staley School of Leadership, will also help K-State Salina students become involved in the Salina community with service projects in support of organizations working on community challenges.

"Preparing our students for life after graduation and ensuring that they are career-ready is a huge emphasis on this campus," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life at K-State Salina. "With the competencies and quality instruction that the Staley School of Leadership is known for, we are expecting future graduates of K-State Salina to be not only career-ready but also ready to be leaders in their respective industries the moment they accept their first jobs."

Faculty, staff and administration are also getting the opportunity to practice their leadership skills by completing leadership education through the Kansas Leadership Center's Leadership Transformation Grant. This grant allows the campus to offer research-backed professional leadership development courses to its staff. This is the second year that K-State Salina has qualified for the grant, and more than 40% of employees have taken advantage of the opportunity.

According to staff at the Kansas Leadership Center, or KLC, the training fosters leadership for stronger, healthier and more prosperous communities in the state. KLC is working with K-State Salina to help create a culture of leadership that embraces change and tackles challenges through its unique approach. Those who complete the courses gain competencies and skills that encourage leadership to come from anyone — regardless of title or position.

With leadership engagement from faculty and staff continuing to grow, K-State Salina welcomed Julia Fabris McBride, chief civic leadership development officer of the Kansas Leadership Center and co-author of the book "When Everyone Leads," to be the featured guest speaker at the campus's annual Fall Kickoff. Fabris McBride took the opportunity at the yearly event to inspire and mobilize the faculty and staff of K-State Salina to practice their leadership skills.

"Our campus was thrilled to welcome Julia to speak with our faculty and staff," said Kirsten Zoller, executive director of strategic initiatives at K-State Salina. "Julia brought a unique perspective based on her years of professional leadership and management. This presentation encouraged our campus to continue to practice leadership and reminded us how important our mission of developing global leaders in aerospace and technology is."

As K-State Salina continues its dedication to leadership development, the campus hopes to foster a culture of leaders eager to embark on new challenges in support of the new strategic initiatives as part of the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan.

Saline County Jail Booking Activity, Sept. 21

SHERIDAN COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with an incident that forced a school and hospital into lock down.

Just before 7a.m. Wednesday Sheridan County sheriff's deputies and Hoxie Police responded to a report of theft and criminal trespass in the 1800 Block of Sheridan Avenue in Hoxie, according to a media release.

Through their investigation, officer identified a suspect as 30-year-old Olajawun Scott. Just after 7a.m. officer made contact with him at the corner of 16th and Sheridan.

After locating stolen items among the suspect's personal belongings, officer attempted to place Scott into handcuffs. He resisted and fled from officers.

Despite a thorough search, officers were unable to locate him. As a precaution, the Sheridan County Health complex and USD 412 schools were placed on lock down.

Just after 10:30a.m. officers contacted the suspect by phone and he surrendered without further incident.&nbsp; Scott was booked into the Thomas County Jail while formal charges are requested with the Sheridan County Attorney for theft and interference with law enforcement.

Saline County Booking Activity, Sept. 20

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Sedgwick County Jail.

Just after 6a.m. on September 15,&nbsp; an inmate, who repeatedly engaged in self-injurious behavior and refused to cooperate with medical care died, according to Sheriff's Captain Keith Allen. The inmate identified as 44-year-old Marcello Ibarra, according to online jail records, had been hospitalized a total of 18 times since his arrest August 15, 2021.

Amy was 12 years old when a sex trafficker started grooming her online. She was a star softball player in Spring Hill, Kan. He said he was her age.

He was so nice, she said. She met him in person and got the shock of her life when she realized he was a 21-year-old sex trafficker from Olathe.

She still lived at home with her dad and mom, who was a stay-at-home mom, but her trafficker was selling her seven to 10 times a week. She never told a trusted adult.

When she was 14, the traffickers killed a little dog in front of her and told her if she didn't come with them the same thing would happen to her dad. She went with them and officially became a runaway.

She tried to escape many times. She became addicted to drugs and alcohol to cope. By the time she was 21, her heart had given out and she had to have an artificial heart implanted. She died in 2021, leaving a young son.

Before Amy died, she insisted that&nbsp;Russ Tuttle of the Stop Trafficking Project tell her story, say her name.&nbsp;

"I want my life to have meant something," she told him.

Tuttle spoke to an adult audience Sunday night at the Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Hays. Tuttle will be giving age-appropriate presentations to youth in the public and Catholic schools in Ellis County this week.

Kids feel fear and shame, Tuttle said, and that's why they don't tell.

Child sex crimes, sex abuse material and domestic minor sex trafficking are increasing in Kansas. 2021 was the worst year on record for online sex abuse, he said.

There was a three-fold increase of self-generated images of children 7 to 10, he said. That is children taking their clothes off and sending naked pictures.

"At the Stop Trafficking Project, it is our vision is to end domestic minor sex trafficking before it starts," he said, " by disrupting the exploration of vulnerability. ...

"My heart is that a student will never need to be rescued by law enforcement," Tuttle said. "Our heart is that a student will never need to be examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner. 

"Our heart is that a student will never experience such severe trauma that they now require a lifetime of housing and public assistance and trauma-informed therapy. Our heart is to function on the very front end of this crisis."

After a student assembly in another community, a sixth-grade girl came up to Tuttle with tears in her eyes and showed him the bruises on her neck where her eighth-grade boyfriend had choked her out while having sex the day before.

The boy, who had started watching porn when he was in the second grade, thought this was normal. He had recorded the act on a cell phone. Within 24 hours of the act, that eighth-grade boy had been approached by 37 adult men who were trying to figure out how to pay the eighth-grade boy to sexually assault that sixth-grade girl.

The United States far outpaces every other country in the world in its porn usage, according to Pornhub. The United States consumes more than double the next country on the list, which is the United Kingdom.

The average age of exposure to porn is between 8 and 11, Tuttle said. Eighty-four percent of porn is viewed through a cell phone, according to Pornhub. Even if your child doesn't have a cell phone, they have a friend who does, Tuttle said.&nbsp;

One of the pervasive ideas about sex trafficking is that young kids are being snatched off the street by a person in a scary vehicle. Tuttle said that is very rare and is a very narrow view of what trafficking can be.

One hundred percent of sex trafficking today is coming through digital devices, almost all of them cell phones, he said.

The initial contact and grooming usually come through an app that has some kind of chat function, he said.

Tuttle said the youngest child he's encountered who was on Tinder, which is an adult hook-up app, was in the second grade. Seventeen adult men, who all knew she was in second grade, had asked her to take off her clothes and send them naked pictures of herself.

An eighth-grade boy in Missouri convinced 80 girls in junior high to take naked pictures of themselves. He created an app and was selling the pictures to adult men for $25 each. His goal was to sell the girls in person. That ring was disrupted before those in-person interactions happened.

"... people online want to harm kids' brains and their minds, so they can later harm them in person," Tuttle said.

All the crimes of sex trafficking come down to three words — exploration of vulnerability, Tuttle said.

"This is the loneliest generation that has ever lived on planet Earth," he said, "yet they are the most connected."

Kids can find out on social media they didn't get invited to the party and what other kids are saying about them. Depression is skyrocketing among youth, Tuttle said.

"Perverts, predators and pimps love this," Tuttle said. "When in the process of grooming if a kid is lonely, isolated and depressed and wondering in life if they are even important, they pounce on that."

They are extremely kind or extremely controlling, he said.

"We don't let these people in our homes, but we don't know what our kids are doing online or we don't know how to know what our kids are doing online or we say, 'not my kids,'" Tuttle said.

The perverts, predators and pimps start by casing children online. Tuttle showed a video from a woman who had been lured into sex trafficking when she was a child. She met the predator through an online book club.

"Then the grooming started, because he found her weaknesses," Tuttle said.&nbsp;

"What I hear all the time from kids is 'He's so nice. She's so nice. They're so nice,'" Tuttle said.&nbsp;

More than 27 million unique files of child sexual abuse material were reported last year. Fifty-nine percent were of children who were prepubescent. Eight percent were of infants or toddlers, Tuttle said.

&nbsp;Two sixth-grade girls independently of each other came to Tuttle after a school assembly and said they were engaging in online sex during school hours on school-issued Macbooks. Both girls said they had plans to meet these "boys" that weekend in-person. They were actually all adult male registered sex offenders.

"We ended it before it started," Tuttle said.

"If we go into schools and tell the truth about this to kids, when we appeal to the hero in kids in a space that is very near and dear to them, it's amazing to watch them step up."

Predators infiltrate any number of apps and groom children. Tuttle mentioned Snapchat, Blender and TikTok.

You can find a list of 100 problematic apps through the Stop Trafficking Project app, which is available for download for free for Apple and Android devices.

People upload images to Blender and others rank them as hot or not hot. Two 12-year-old girls at the same school uploaded naked images to the app. One was ranked as "hot," but within 30 minutes she was being body-shamed and exploited online. She was suicidal.

 The second girl was ranked as"not hot." She was also suicidal.

"This is where kids live. We better figure it out," Tuttle said.

Tuttle said TikTok was the worst app on the market in terms of child safety.&nbsp;

"This is where they are learning how to die by suicide," he said. "This is learning the latest self-harming techniques such as cutting and burning. This is where they are learning dangerous diet fads to lessen the pain of the seductions they are facing online."

Seven-year-old Jessy had no technology of her own. Her mother set a timer for 15 minutes and allowed her to get online on her phone. In that short time, a grown man who said he was her age, tried to get Jesse to take a picture of herself with her shirt off and send it to him.&nbsp;

Her father was a law enforcement officer. He ended the chat before his daughter sent the image the man requested.

When Tuttle does presentations for young children, he shares with them to not keep secrets and to go to a trusted adult and ask for "screen help," if they encounter something online that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Predators will lie about their age and send fake photos. They appeal to a child's fantasy of love.

A ninth-grade boy told Tuttle that a "smokin' hot" woman sent him naked photos and asked him to send her naked photos of himself. He sent pictures and videos. Within an hour he had multiple messages that if he didn't pay $1,000, they were going to make him famous on the Internet.

The boy stole his dad's credit card and paid $18,000 before his disclosure. Tuttle said if that happens to your child, never pay. The photos are going to be circulated anyway.

"We are not arguing with kids. We are arguing with their fantasy," he said.

Saline County Booking Activity, Sept. 19

FINNEY COUNTY —A woman accused in the death of a southwest Kansas man has been extradited to Kansas.

Just after 3p.m. Sunday, 32-year-old Samantha Smith was booked into the Finney County jail in requested charges of&nbsp; Murder in the 1st degree. In the commission of a felony and Aggravated robbery, according to online jail records.

In September 2019, Ernie Ortiz was found shot outside of his family restaurant in Garden City and he later died at the hospital. It is believed Ortiz was shot during a robbery after he closed the business for the night.

On September 6, U.S. Marshals arrested Smith in connection with the&nbsp;homicide&nbsp; in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

In June 2023, the Garden City Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Robbery against Smith in connection with the case. 

In January, Crime Stoppers in southwest Kansas offered a&nbsp;$21,500 reward for information in the&nbsp;shooting death.

 </figure>FINNEY COUNTY —A woman accused in the death of a southwest Kansas man has been extradited to Kansas.Just after 3p.m. Sunday, 32-year-old Samantha Smith was booked into the Finney County jail in requested charges of&nbsp; Murder in the 1st degree. In the commission of a felony and Aggravated robbery, according to online jail records.In September 2019, Ernie Ortiz was found shot outside of his family restaurant in Garden City and he later died at the hospital. It is believed Ortiz was shot during a robbery after he closed the business for the night.<figure>

 </figure>In June 2023, the Garden City Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Robbery against Smith in connection with the case. In January, Crime Stoppers in southwest Kansas offered a&nbsp;$21,500 reward for information in the&nbsp;shooting death.

Suspect in 4-year-old murder case is back in a Kansas jail

Winifred Jane (McHenry) Garlow, age 102, died September 14, 2023, in San Diego, California. She died peacefully surrounded by her three children at BonitaView Hospice House. 

She was born on May 27, 1921, on a farm near Cameron, Missouri, to Lester Earl and Elsie Grace (Madison) McHenry. She attended Mt. Pleasant and Wamsley Rural Grade Schools in DeKalb County, Missouri, and later District 21 (Pleasant Valley) Grade School in Cloud County, Kansas. 

She moved with her parents when she was twelve years old to a farm near Ames, Kansas. She graduated from Clyde, Kansas High School in 1939. 

Growing up, she and her two sisters were known for their beautiful harmony as the McHenry Sisters Trio.

On April 5, 1940, she married James Burtis Garlow at Morgan Chapel Wesleyan Church (a rural church). They farmed in the Ames community. While farming, the family received the Cloud County Balanced Farm Award in 1956.&nbsp;

Winifred loved to tell the story of how she and Burtis met. At age 12, Winifred moved with her parents and two sisters to a farm near Ames, Kansas (about 200 miles west of Kansas City), to the same rural school district that the Garlows attended. 

She was in the 7th&nbsp;grade with Burtis’ youngest sister and would frequently get to go home with his sister and see Burtis. He had graduated from high school the year before. 

She fell in love with Burtis when she was 12 years old. They started dating when she was 16 and then married when she was 18 and he was 24.&nbsp;

In 1965, Winifred and Burtis organized a quartet called the AstroNotes, composed of their twin sons Bob and Bill, age 9, nephew Don Garlow, age 10, and their pastor’s son Daniel Seitz, age 9, singing only sacred music. 

They were often joined by brother Jim (guitar), sister Judy (piano), cousin Janet (piano), brother-in-law Dick (bass guitar) and Winifred occasionally soloed. They traveled for 8 ½ years over 9 states, singing in over 500 concerts.

Following retirement from farming in 1981, they moved to various locations to be near their three children. This included two years in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one year in Olathe, Kansas (Kansas City area); and 12 years in Bedford, Texas (Dallas-Forth Worth area).&nbsp;

Winifred helped Burtis with farming and she did not work outside the home until 1981 after moving to Oklahoma City. At age 61, she took a secretarial course for one year at the then new Francis Tuttle Vo-Tec School in Oklahoma City. 

She went to work for Kelly Services. Then while living back in Olathe, she took a course at Johnson County Community College, learning the computer. They later moved to Dallas/Fort Worth area where their son, Jim, had started a new church. 

Winifred, at age 63, was Jim’s church administrative assistant, before going to work in Dallas at the Headquarters of American Airlines in the Consumer Relations Department. Winifred and Burtis enjoyed flying on many trips.

After her retirement at age 75, in May 1996, they moved to La Mesa, California in the San Diego area, where their son Jim had become Senior Pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church.

In retirement, Winifred enjoyed doing transcription work for Skyline Church and her son Jim’s books, and for her daughter Judy’s book. 

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, making quilts, reading and jigsaw puzzles. She especially enjoyed being with her family. She also had a passion for roses and watching her hummingbirds.

Winifred was a longtime member of the Wesleyan Church and served the Kansas District as Secretary of the Women’s Missionary Society. 

Winifred, along with her husband, Burtis, was a charter member of The Gideons International of the Concordia, Kansas Camp in 1969 and she served as a local and state officer in the Kansas Gideon Auxiliary. 

She served as secretary/treasurer of the PTA at Rural District 6 and Concordia Lincoln School where their children attended. She was a member of the La Mesa (California) Gideon Auxiliary Camp and served as Scripture Distribution Secretary.

At age 101, She received Oklahoma Wesleyan University Honorary Alumnus Award of 2022 for support of Christian Education, for raising support for youth to attend a Christian college. They sent all four of their children to Christian Schools.

She was on the Well Versed - World Prayer Network Prayer Calls without fail for almost three years twice a week, three hours each time, until her homegoing.&nbsp;

Survivors include their children, daughter Judy Garlow Wade, La Mesa, California; two sons: Dr. Jim Garlow (Rosemary), El Cajon, California; Dr. Bill Garlow (Laurie), Salina, Kansas; 12grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Burtis Garlow in 1998; daughter Jane Ann, age 10 ½ months in 1942; son Robert (Bob) Earl Garlow, age 19 in 1974; one&nbsp;grandson, Christopher William Garlow, age 21 in 2009; daughter-in-law, Carol Jane Garlow in 2013; son-in-law Keat Wade, on Aug 27, 2023; and two sisters: Vivian Crouse, age 91 in 2011, Betty Sessoms age 97 in 2020. She was the last surviving member of the Joshua and Ruby (Cyre) Garlow family of eight Garlow siblings and their eight spouses.

Two&nbsp;Memorials will be held: at Skyline Wesleyan, La Mesa, California, on Thursday evening September 21, 6 p.m. viewing; 6:30 p.m. service; 8 p.m. desserts; then at Concordia Wesleyan Church, Concordia, Kansas on Sunday afternoon, September 24, 2 p.m. viewing; 2:30 p.m. funeral; 4:30 burial at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Ames, Kansas, on a hill overlooking the farmstead where she and her husband raised their family.

Saline County Booking Activity, Sept. 18

Kansas Wesleyan will host its second annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 20, as part of Homecoming 2023. The event will get underway at 11 a.m. outside the Student Activities Center and is free of charge. All veterans will receive a small token of appreciation. Numerous elected officials, active-duty servicemen, local law enforcement, and representatives from approximately 20 veterans and advocacy groups are expected to attend.

By registering for the event before Oct. 13, each veteran and their one guest can eat for free immediately after the ceremony. The indoor picnic meal will be available to others for a small fee. All are encouraged to stay for the Homecoming pep rally immediately following the meal.

“This is a great opportunity to thank those who have given so much,” said Kay Quinn, event organizer and KWU’s assistant director of stewardship and university events. “We hope the community comes out to join KWU in recognizing these great Americans.”

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Karen Berndt Weis, a veteran of nearly three decades of military service, will be the event’s speaker. Weis’ career has included serving as the dean of the U.S. School of Aerospace Medicine and as a consultant to the surgeon general for nursing research, as well as numerous international deployments. Those included Oman (in support of operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield); Afghanistan (twice, in support of Operating Enduring Freedom); and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of Operation Northern Watch. In addition, she was an aircrew member on the mission to bring the wounded back from the Battle of Mogadishu, an incident loosely depicted in the 2001 film and 1999 book “Black Hawk Down.”

Claudette Humphrey ’99, G’01, KWU’s director of career services, will serve as the event’s emcee. Humphrey comes from a long line of military service, with numerous members of her family, including her father, brother, daughter and daughter-in-law, having spent time in the Armed Forces.

With a quarter of the regular season already in the books, the Sacred Heart Knights will square off with Ellsworth on Friday night as they kick off the home portion of their schedule.

The Knights (0-2), enter this contest in search of their first win after falling to Minneapolis in a shutout a week ago, while the Bearcats (2-0) come in ranked as the #5 team in Class 2A, hot on the heels of a 62-6 bashing of Republic County.

Despite the pregame odds, Sacred Heart will be hungry to put their best foot forward this week in another challenge against a rising league foe.

“These boys expect to be competitive in this game and if somebody said Ellsworth was a heavy favorite a lot of the boys in this locker room would argue with you,” Knights head coach Norm Jennings said. “I love the attitude of this team and I hope that continues to build and define Sacred Heart football.”

While the Knights focus on rebuilding their program, the Bearcats have emerged as a real contender for a second consecutive season, and will look to continue a recent run of dominance that has seen the team win nine of their last ten regular season games.

“We’re still looking for improvement in our offense on both sides of the ball,” Ellsworth head coach Josh Homolka said. “We were a lot more crisp in practice this week and I think we had some of the best practices we’ve had in several years here.”

In order to have success, Sacred Heart will once again need a big performance out of Michael Matteucci, who has been the centerpiece of the offense through two weeks, floating between quarterback, receiver, and at times, running back.

“Mike is absolutely critical to what we do and that’s a testimony to his football IQ,” Jennings said. “He understands what’s happening on the field and he makes very sound judgement calls. He understands the weapons around him and he knows how to get everyone involved when we need them.”

To stop Matteucci and company, the Bearcat defense will need another big week, as they take on a look that they’ve practiced defending since summer workouts.

“They run a flex wing offensively and we have things that we work on all year round when to face that,” Homolka said. “Matteucci is a kid that can run well and he can throw it too so our cover guys are going to have to stay home and we’re going to have to get hats to the ball.”

On the other side of the matchup, the Knight's defense will have their hands full with a Bearcat offense averaging 42 points per game, still warming up one of it’s best weapons in transfer Ian Andalon.

“The defense really rose up for us last year and they did the same thing last week,” Jennings said. “I was so proud of that unit and to have so many kids shifted around to some different positions I thought they really responded well.”
