Today in History - October 21

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A woman arrested in connection with an alleged hit-and-run death of a man in Wichita made her first court appearance in the case Tuesday.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20079206">Ashley Corley, 36, Hutchinson, </a>is charged with first-degree murder, leaving the scene of an accident and a misdemeanor count of driving while license suspended or canceled, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Police arrested Corley on Saturday in connection with a traffic fatality that occurred Friday in the 3000 block of West 9th Street in Wichita.

Just before 8a.m.,&nbsp; police responded to 9th Street North and St. Paul in Wichita where they found 41-year-old Rigoberto Rivas in the street. He had head injuries and died at a local hospital, according to Officer Chad Ditch.&nbsp;

Investigators learned that Rivas and Corley were seen running toward a gray car parked on the curb at 9th Street. Corley allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed with Rivas on the hood. The car swerved and Rivas fell from the car.

A follow-up investigation led officers to believe the car was stolen.

Police investigators arrested Corley in Hutchison, transported her back to Wichita and booked her into the Sedgwick County Jail

&nbsp;On October 31, attorneys in the case are scheduled to discuss future dates with Judge Jeffrey Syrios, according to the district attorney's office. She remains jailed on a $500,000.&nbsp;

Kan. woman charged in death of man who fell from hood of a car

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kris Kobach, the Kansas Republican who helped lead Donald Trump's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/67f6a7741a534b629184e4e8f939bbb3">short-lived presidential voter fraud commission,</a>&nbsp;wants to rid his state of ballot drop boxes and says as he runs for attorney general that discounting talk of fraud is “ignoring reality.”

The expanded use of drop boxes for mailed ballots in 2020&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voting-rights-2022-midterm-elections-covid-health-wisconsin-c61fa93a12a1a51d6d9f4e0a21fa3b75">didn’t lead to any widespread problems,</a>&nbsp;according to an Associated Press survey of state election officials across the U.S. that revealed no cases of fraud, vandalism or theft that could have affected the results. And Kobach's position puts him at odds not only with Democrats and voting-right advocates, but Kansas' Republican secretary of state, Scott Schwab, who says the state's elections are secure and drop boxes are safe.

Kobach, who was secretary of state for eight years before Schwab, said Wednesday that allowing drop boxes prevents Kansas from enforcing a 2021 law against what Republicans call ballot “harvesting,” making it illegal for individuals to deliver ballots for more than 10 other people. Voting-rights advocates see the law as unnecessary for securing elections and contend it only hinders assistance to poor, minority and elderly voters.

Kobach argued that with drop boxes, people can get a voter’s permission to deliver ballots and identify themselves on the ballot envelope with a false name and drop the signed enveloped in the drop box and officials can’t see that someone has delivered too many ballots. Election officials say the ballot would still be legal if the voter is properly registered and wanted to vote.

“There are still other layers of protection, but it makes our anti-harvesting statute pretty, pretty weak when drop boxes can be used to circumvent it," Kobach said.

Kobach declared Tuesday night in a debate with Democratic opponent Chris Mann that the state “needs to get rid of drop boxes." He said Wednesday that as attorney general he would urge the GOP-controlled Legislature to enact a law barring counties from using them.

“Those on the left who say there is no election fraud are simply ignoring reality,” Kobach said during the debate.

Mann said in a statement after the debate that eligible voters should have “equal access to the ballot box.”

"Ballot drop boxes make that possible,” he said.

As attorney general, Kobach could prosecute cases of alleged voter fraud, but he would have no power to tell counties how to run elections. He acknowledged that all he could do about ballot drop boxes is urge the Legislature to ban them.

Schwab has pushed back hard against attacks on drop boxes and said in a statement Wednesday that counties have used them for decades. Kansas counties deployed 191 of them in 2020, averaging one box for about every 10,000 registered voters.

“It’s an efficient way for Kansans to return their advance-by-mail ballot without allowing the federal government to be involved,” he added. “Drop boxes are more secure than the post office.”

Kobach's race this year is an attempt at a political comeback after he gave up the secretary of state's office to run unsuccessfully for governor in 2018 and lost a U.S. Senate primary in 2020. He championed stricter voting and voter ID laws years before Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2137a1867b044927a3ed448eb7a424d9">named him vice chair of his election fraud commission</a>&nbsp;in 2017.

With the wide circulation among Republicans of Trump’s false statements that the 2020 election was stolen from him, Kobach has stopped short of publicly doubting Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

But in his interview Wednesday, Kobach said “there’s no question” fraud occurred in 2020 at least the battleground states of Michigan and Pennsylvania. He added that Americans will never know “how many fraudulent ballots were cast.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes.

On October 17, a 23-year-old woman reported she was sexually&nbsp; assaulted by a suspect identified as 23-year-old Hunter Peach, according to Officer Chad Ditch.&nbsp;

Officers located Peach and arrested him in the 400 block of West Central and booked him on requested charges of Aggravated Criminal Sodomy, Aggravated Domestic Battery, and Rape.

&nbsp;Peach and the woman know each other, according to police. He is being held on a $300,000 bond, according to online jail records. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

Police: Kansas man held on $300K bond for alleged sex crimes

A Salina man was arrested in Dickinson County after a high-speed chase along Interstate 70 that began in Saline County late Tuesday night.

At approximately 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Salina Police Department observed a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche with an expired license plate leaving the parking lot of Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, and heading north on N. Ohio Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The officer attempted to stop the pickup as it was turning eastbound onto I-70, but the pickup took off and a pursuit ensued. Speeds reached upto 100 mph, Forrester said.

The officer terminated the pursuit at the Dickinson County line, but Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies were later able to stop the pickup and take the driver, identified as Tyrone Fenton, 43, of Salina, into custody. 

Fenton faces the following requested charges in Dickinson County, according to Dickinson County Jail booking information.

●Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body

●Driving while a habitual violator; 3rd or subsequent conviction

●Driving while suspended; 3rd or subsequent conviction

●Yield emergency vehicle; Fail; Unknown circumstances

●Vehicles; Operate vehicle without registration or w/expired tag

SALINA -&nbsp;Virginia Ade, 105, passed away peacefully in Salina, Kansas on Sunday, October 16, 2022.

Virginia was born on July 19, 1917.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Harry and Hazel (Meyer) Mason.

She attended Pleasant Hill School and graduated from Abilene High School.&nbsp; She worked at Duckwalls in Abilene.&nbsp; After graduating, she taught at Scotia School, which was located just west of Holland, KS for four years.

Virginia married Ezra Ade at the First Baptist Church in Carlton, KS on May 14, 1939.&nbsp; They were married for 71 years before Ezra’s death.&nbsp; They lived and farmed in the Carlton area for many years before moving to Salina. &nbsp;

Virginia was an active member of the Carlton Baptist Church doing local, association, regional, state, and national church work.&nbsp; She was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the American Baptist Women’s Ministries.&nbsp; 

Ezra and Virginia traveled a lot, visiting many Christian Centers, schools, colleges, children’s homes, churches and missionaries doing church work.&nbsp; Virginia worked with the youth of the church, as she served two years as sponsor at the World Involvement Congress, the Baptist Guild Girls Conference, and 14 years as counselor at the Citizenship Seminar at Rock Springs 4-H Camp.&nbsp; 

Virginia and Ezra also traveled the country as Virginia served the Dickinson County Farm Bureau as the County Woman Chairman.&nbsp; She was named 5th District Woman Leader of the year in 1974 in which she served 14 years.&nbsp; She was a member of State Youth Power Committee working with Ag in the classroom. &nbsp;

Virginia and Ezra served as community and project leaders of the Carlton Trailblazers 4-H Club for over 40 years.&nbsp; The Kansas Commission on the Bi-Centennial of the United States Constitution recognized Virginia for special service and dedication to the citizens of Kansas in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Carlton E.H.U. &nbsp;

Virginia was a very talented person.&nbsp;&nbsp; Combining Ezras’s wood working and Virginia’s painting, they had participated in many art and craft shows.&nbsp; Virginia initiated the establishment of the community and senior citizens center in Carlton.&nbsp; She was a member of the Retired Teachers, Republican Women, Christian Women, National Association of Tole and Decorative Painters, Home Circle Art Club, Kansas Authors Club and was historian of family, church, school and cemetery.&nbsp; She painted pictures, wrote music and poems, played the piano and organ.&nbsp; She also began a memorial service for the Woodlawn Cemetery in which is still going on today.&nbsp; Virginia, Ezra and their son, Dennis, would travel to various states just to search for family members.&nbsp; Virginia always enjoyed entertaining neighbors, family, and church friends.&nbsp;&nbsp; She spent many hours helping cut quilt squares, helping young girls learn the basic cooking and baking skills.

One of Virginia’s biggest accomplishments was the chairman on a committee of five, who spent hours on writing and putting together the Carlton Area History Book which included the towns of Carlton, Elmo, and Holland, all of Dickinson County.&nbsp; The book was a big success and is still being used today because it not only contains the history but also information for the areas listed.&nbsp;&nbsp; She also played a big part in making the Gypsum History book. &nbsp;

Virginia was a woman of great faith, a loving wife, parent,&nbsp; and a wonderful aunt.&nbsp; When Ezra and her lived at the farm, every night she would take her beloved dog, Deva, and walk down the lane and raise her arms to the heavens and recite the bible verse, Psalm 121: 1 &amp; 2.&nbsp; “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.&nbsp; My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra in 2010, her parents, and sister Frances Haney.

Survivors include her son Dennis L. Ade, Salina, KS, formerly of Hutchinson, Ks and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday, October 24, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Gypsum,&nbsp; KS.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.&nbsp; There will be no visitation. &nbsp; &nbsp; Memorials may be made to the Community Foundation of Dickinson County in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St., Salina, KS 67401.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged arson fire and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 7p.m. Monday, fire crews responded to the report of a house fire at 710 SW Polk Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Alan Stahl.

 Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from a two-story home. Due to the advanced fire conditions, fire crews began a defensive fire attack in an attempt to keep the fire contained to a single home. The fire did cause damage three other buildings before firefighters could bring it under control.

Neighbors reported there were possible people in the residence. Additionally, neighbors reported a person running from the building. 

Officers from the Topeka Police Department were able to locate the individual who was seen running from the house. A Topeka Fire Investigator arrived with Officers and began to question the individual. 

The suspect identified as 27-year-old Nathaniel Stanton told investigators that all occupants of the house were able to escape before the fire department’s arrival.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation Unit and investigators from the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshall responded to the scene to perform an origin and cause scene investigation.

That investigation indicates the cause of the fire as incendiary, intentionally set. Police arrested Stanton and booked into jail on requested charges that include 3 counts of Arson and 1 count of Criminal Trespass. The home was vacant and had sustained damage from 2 previous fires. The estimated dollar loss – $14,670, all associated with structural loss.

Today in History - October 19

SEDGWICK COUNTY—The Sedgwick County District attorney's office will consider charges against a man in connection with a fatal weekend shooting in a restaurant drive-through.

Just after 11:30p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to the 3600 block of East Harry for a shooting, according to Officer Chad Ditch.

Officers arrived on the scene and located 35-year-old Pleasure Coleman of Wichita unconscious and not breathing. 

Police began providing life-saving efforts until EMS arrived. Coleman was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The investigation revealed that Coleman had a verbal altercation in a local drive-through with a 31-year-old man. That argument would turn physical at which point Coleman and the 31-year-old man exchanged gunfire at each other. Coleman was struck in his upper body.

Police took the 31-year-old man&nbsp; into custody on the scene. He was not booked into jail, according to Ditch. Police have not released his identity. Coleman and the suspect are not known to each other.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — As the new school year&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/back-to-school">swings into gear</a>, some students carry heavier worries than keeping up with homework: Demand has been growing steadily for children’s books that address traumatic events such as school shootings.

Sales of books for young readers on violence, grief, and emotions have increased for nine straight years, with nearly six million copies sold in 2021 — more than double the amount in 2012, according to NPD BookScan, which tracks U.S. retail sales of print books.

As&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mental-health-crisis-schools-768fed6a4e71d694ec0694c627d8fdca">anxiety and depression rates have soared</a>&nbsp;among young Americans, educators and advocates say children’s books can play a role in helping them cope.

“While it might be second nature to try to shield kids from the harsher realities of life and scary news, it’s proving difficult to avoid big society issues,” said Kristine Enderle, editorial director at Magination Press, the children’s book publishing arm of the American Psychological Association. “Kids face these issues and challenges in their day-to-day life.”

One book, “I’m Not Scared … I’m Prepared,” was reprinted several times to meet demand after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/uvalde-school-shooting">massacre at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School</a>&nbsp;in May, according to the National Center for Youth Issues, the nonprofit group that published the book. The story, first published in 2014, features a teacher who shows children what to do when a “dangerous someone” is in their school.

Bookstores around the country see interest in titles from the genre rise and fall depending on local and national headlines, according to bookseller Barnes &amp; Noble.

Some newer titles engage directly with real-world gun violence.

In “Numb to This,” a graphic novel released this month, author Kindra Neely details the 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting in Oregon, which she survived, and the aftermath as she tries to heal amid repeated shootings elsewhere. Initially, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers editorial director Andrea Colvin said she was shocked when Keely pitched the idea.

“I had to remember that, yes, this is what our stories are like now. This is what young people have experienced,” Colvin said.

Michele Gay, whose 7-year-old daughter Josephine was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, turned to children's books herself to help her two surviving daughters. One picture book she read to them was “The Ant Hill Disaster,” about a boy ant who is afraid to go back to school after it is destroyed.

“It was one of many books that was of comfort to them and gave them a little bit of confidence to just face one more day, one more minute, because we can do it together,” said Gay, who advocates for improved security in schools through a nonprofit she co-founded, Safe and Sound Schools.

Parents should make sure books addressing trauma are age-appropriate and backed by psychologists, experts say.

It's important to be aware of whether children are aware of or feeling stress about frightening things in the news, said Aryeh Sova, a Chicago psychologist who works with children who attended the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/highland-park-chicago-shooting-updates-4e9e0cf0aaa9954ae4fee30c5dd28bc8">July 4 parade in suburban Highland Park, Illinois</a>, where seven people were killed in a shooting. A child asking lots of questions about an event may signify that they are anxious or fixated on it, he said.

“If it’s coming from the kid’s need, then books could be a great way for kids to learn and to read together with their parents and to review it on their own and to process it at their own speed, at their own pace,” Sova said.

He is the author of the illustrated children’s book “&nbsp;<a href="https://www.williamelectricblack.com/a-gun-is-not-fun">A Gun Is Not Fun</a>.” He said young children in areas afflicted by gun violence are more aware of it than parents may think.“They know about flowers and candles and cards in the street. They walk by them every day,” he said.Through children’s literature and theater, Black works to reduce urban gun violence. “If you start when they’re 5, and you go back when you’re 6, 7, 8, 9, you’re going to change the behavior,” he said.In the spring, he will collaborate with New York public school P.S. 155 in East Harlem with a series of gun violence awareness and prevention workshops for early readers, using puppets, storytelling and repetition.“They won’t even get rid of assault weapons here in this country. So my thing is, we have to go in and we’ve got to help them help themselves save themselves,” Black said. “We’re really kind of failing at that.”
