NEW YORK (AP) —Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA on Wednesday after a league probe found he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors and wagered on games, even betting on the Raptors to lose.

Porter is the second person to be banned by Commissioner Adam Silver for violating league rules. The other was now-former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014, shortly after Silver took office.

In making the announcement, Silver called Porter's actions “blatant.”

“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment,” Silver said.

The investigation started once the league learned from “licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets” about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter's performance in a game on March 20 against Sacramento. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior that game and said that another individual — known to be an NBA bettor — placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million.

Porter took himself out of that game after less than three minutes, claiming illness, none of his stats meeting the totals set in the parlay. The $80,000 bet was frozen and not paid out, the league said, and the NBA started an investigation not long afterward.

“You don't want this for the kid, you don't want this for our team and we don't want this for our league, that's for sure," Raptors President Masai Ujiri said Wednesday in Toronto, speaking shortly before the NBA announced Porter's ban. “My first reaction is obviously surprise, because none of us, I don't think anybody, saw this coming.”

Later, after the NBA revealed the ban, the Raptors said they are "fully supportive of the league’s decision to ban Jontay Porter from the NBA and are grateful for the swift resolution to this investigation. We will continue to cooperate with all ongoing inquiries.”

The league has partnerships and other relationships with more than two dozen gaming companies, many of whom advertise during NBA games in a variety of ways. Silver himself has been a longtime proponent of legal sports wagering, but the league has very strict rules for players and employees regarding betting.

And what Porter was found to have done was in violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which states: “Any Player who, directly or indirectly, wagers money or anything of value on any game or event in the Association or in the NBA G League shall, on being charged with such wagering, be given an opportunity to answer such charges after due notice, and the decision of the Commissioner shall be final, binding, and conclusive and unappealable.”

Silver cautioned last week that this move was possible, saying what Porter was accused of represented “cardinal sin” in the NBA. Porter has not commented since the investigation began, and never played for the Raptors again — he was listed as out for all of Toronto's games for the remainder of the season citing personal reasons.

The league also determined that Porter — the brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. — placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using someone else's betting account. The bets ranged from $15 to $22,000; the total wagered was $54,094 and generated a payout of $76,059, or net winnings of $21,965.

Those wagers did not involve any game in which Porter played, the NBA said. But three of the wagers were multi-game parlays, including a bet where Porter — who was not playing in the games involved — wagered on the Raptors to lose. All three of those bets lost.

“While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players,” Silver said. "Working closely with all relevant stakeholders across the industry, we will continue to work diligently to safeguard our league and game.”

Porter was on what is called a two-way contract, meaning he could play for both the Raptors and their affiliate in the G League. His salary for this year was around $410,000; had the Raptors signed him to a standard NBA contract next season, as seemed possible, his salary would have exceeded $2 million.

The 24-year-old Porter averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 26 games, including five starts. He also played in 11 games for Memphis in the 2020-21 season.

ESPN first reported the investigation, which it said surrounded Porter’s performance in games on Jan. 26 and March 20. In both games, Porter played briefly before leaving citing injury or illness. Porter played 4 minutes, 24 seconds against the Los Angeles Clippers in the first of those games, then 2:43 against Sacramento in the second game.

In both of those games, Porter did not come close to hitting the prop-wager lines for points, rebounds and 3-pointers that bettors could play at some sportsbooks. For example, one set of prop wagers for Porter for the Clippers game was set at 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists; he finished with no points, three rebounds and one assist. For the Kings game, they were around 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds; Porter finished that game with no points and two rebounds.

The league said its probe “remains open and may result in further findings,” and that those findings are being shared with federal prosecutors.

Banned for life: NBA player bet on his team to lose

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has dismissed all impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/alejandro-mayorkas">Alejandro Mayorkas</a>, ending the House Republican push to remove the Cabinet secretary from office over his handling of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-border-security-migrants-homeland-security-1c6e9f612dff721191c0254f980947a5">the U.S.-Mexico border</a>&nbsp;and ending his trial before arguments even began.

Senators voted to dismiss both articles of impeachment and end the trial, with Democrats arguing that the articles were unconstitutional. The first article charged Mayorkas with “willful and systemic refusal to comply" with immigration law. The second article charged Mayorkas with a “breach of trust” for saying the border was secure. The votes were 51-48 and 51-49, both along party lines.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the House Republicans’ case failed to meet “the high standard of high crimes and misdemeanors” and could set a dangerous precedent.

“For the sake of the Senate’s integrity and to protect impeachment for those rare cases we truly need it, senators should dismiss today’s charges,” said Schumer, D-N.Y., as he opened Wednesday’s session.

Senate Republicans had argued for a full impeachment trial after the House&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-mayorkas-impeachment-vote-border-security-80cbd5bbb8f512c6814f155f825a1214">narrowly voted</a>&nbsp;in February to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the border, arguing in the two articles that he “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce immigration laws. The House vote was the first time in nearly 150 years that a Cabinet secretary was impeached.

An outright dismissal of House Republicans’ prosecution of Mayorkas, with no chance to argue the case, is an embarrassing defeat for House Republicans and embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who made the impeachment a priority. And it is likely to resonate politically for both Republicans and Democrats in a presidential election year when border security has been a top issue.

Republicans argue that President Joe Biden has been weak on the border as arrests for illegal crossings skyrocketed to more than 2 million people during the last two years of his term, though they have fallen from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-border-crossings-mexico-biden-18ac91ef502e0c5433f74de6cc629b32">a record-high</a>&nbsp;of 250,000 in December amid heightened enforcement in Mexico. Democrats say that instead of impeaching Mayorkas, Republicans should have accepted a bipartisan Senate compromise aimed at reducing the number of migrants who come into the U.S. illegally.

House impeachment managers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/senate-mayorkas-impeachment-trial-border-security-63e9ec242ec8a2f0a95f84497c506e0d">delivered the charges to the Senate</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday, standing in the well of the Senate and reading them aloud to a captive audience of senators. But they did not get a chance to present the case before the Senate dismissed it.

Once the senators were sworn in on Wednesday, the chamber turned into the court of impeachment, with Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington presiding. Murray is the president pro tempore of the Senate, or the senior-most member of the majority party who sits in for the vice president. Senators approached the front of the Senate in groups of four to sign an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/political-news-57ef0cdd29d9875b13713f4974eab9d5">oath book</a>&nbsp;that is stored in the National Archives.

Schumer then called for the votes to dismiss the trial after Republicans rejected a proposed agreement for Senate debate time and several votes on GOP objections. Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt said Democrats were “bulldozing 200 years of precedent" on impeachments by trying to dismiss the trial.

Angry Republicans called for several votes to delay the inevitable final outcome, but none of them passed as all Democrats and three Independents held together.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said “history will not judge this moment well.”

“This process must not be abused," McConnell said. "It must not be short-circuited."

Still, Republicans similarly moved to dismiss former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial in 2021, weeks after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/2021-united-states-capitol-riot">the Jan. 6, 2021, attack</a>&nbsp;on the Capitol. All but five GOP senators — including McConnell — voted to end the trial, arguing it was unconstitutional because Trump had already left office.

As Johnson signed the articles Monday in preparation for sending them across the Capitol, he said Schumer should convene a trial to “hold those who engineered this crisis to full account.”

Schumer “is the only impediment to delivering accountability for the American people,” Johnson said. “Pursuant to the Constitution, the House demands a trial.”

Even if the Senate held a trial, Republicans would not be able to win the support of the two-thirds of the Senate that is needed to convict and remove Mayorkas from office — Democrats control the Senate, 51-49, and they appear to be united against the impeachment effort. Not one House Democrat supported it, either.

Mayorkas, who was in New York on Wednesday to launch a campaign for children’s online safety, reiterated that he’s focused on the work of his department. “The Senate is going to do what the Senate considers to be appropriate as that proceeds,” he said. “I am here in New York City on Wednesday morning fighting online sexual exploitation and abuse. I’m focused on our mission.”

Johnson delayed sending the articles to the Senate for weeks while both chambers finished work on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-shutdown-budget-speaker-johnson-85dc1e93f6c49c154c02a166d0e8e784">government funding</a>&nbsp;legislation and took a two-week recess. Johnson had said he would send them to the Senate last week, but he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mayorkas-impeachment-house-speaker-johnson-border-534cbf59e92c9cf141bba1ff38dc01cf">punted again</a>&nbsp;after Senate Republicans said they wanted more time to prepare.

At a hearing with Mayorkas on Tuesday about President Joe Biden's budget request for the department, some of the House impeachment managers previewed the arguments they would have made.

Tennessee Rep. Mark Green, the chairman of the House Homeland Security panel, told the secretary that he has a duty under the law to control and guard U.S. borders, and “during your three years as secretary, you have failed to fulfill this oath. You have refused to comply with the laws passed by Congress, and you have breached the public trust.”

Mayorkas defended the department's efforts but said the nation's immigration system is “fundamentally broken, and only Congress can fix it."

The impeachment trial is the third in five years. While most Republicans oppose quick dismissal, some have hinted they could vote with Democrats.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said last week he wasn’t sure what he would do if there were a move to dismiss the trial. “I think it’s virtually certain that there will not be the conviction of someone when the constitutional test has not been met,” he said.

At the same time, Romney said he wants to at least express his view that “Mayorkas has done a terrible job, but he’s following the direction of the president and has not met the constitutional test of a high crime or misdemeanor.”

The two articles argue that Mayorkas not only refused to enforce existing law but also breached the public trust by lying to Congress and saying the border was secure. The House vote was the first time in nearly 150 years that a Cabinet secretary was impeached.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to call votes to dismiss two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas after senators are sworn in as jurors midday, a move that could scuttle the trial and frustrate Republicans who have demanded that House prosecutors be able to make their case. Democrats appear to be united in opposition to moving forward.

The House&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-mayorkas-impeachment-vote-border-security-80cbd5bbb8f512c6814f155f825a1214">narrowly voted</a>&nbsp;in February to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-border-security-migrants-homeland-security-1c6e9f612dff721191c0254f980947a5">the U.S.-Mexico border</a>, arguing in the two articles that he “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce immigration laws. House impeachment managers appointed by Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., delivered the charges to the Senate on Tuesday, standing in the well of the Senate and reading them aloud to a captive audience of senators.

The entire process could be done within hours on Wednesday. Majority Democrats have said the GOP case against Mayorkas doesn’t rise to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/cc4471115abf4d7bad43e07cb64958d7">“high crimes and misdemeanors”</a>&nbsp;laid out as a bar for impeachment in the Constitution, and Schumer probably has enough votes to end the trial immediately if he decides to do so.

Schumer has said he wants to “address this issue as expeditiously as possible.”

“Impeachment should never be used to settle a policy disagreement,” Schumer said. “That would set a horrible precedent for the Congress.”

Judy Ann Holloway, 73, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at McPherson Hospital.

She was born on December 3, 1950, in&nbsp; Herington, Kansas, the daughter of Harvey and Alta (Aldridge) Fleming.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School in 1969 and continued her education at Hutchinson Junior College, Wichita State University, and McPherson College.&nbsp; On August 9, 1969, Judy was united in marriage to Gary C. Holloway at First Christian Church in McPherson.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons, Barry and Chris.

Judy was one of the first employees of McPherson Pizza Hut in the 1970s.&nbsp; She taught for 15 years in USD #418 as a classroom teacher and as a gifted education teacher.&nbsp; After she retired in 2005, she was a substitute teacher and an adjunct professor at Tabor College for two years.

She loved to play tennis and tried to please her husband by playing golf with him, even though she hated the game.&nbsp; Judy adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She wrote two children’s education books and had them published.&nbsp; She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and helped with many school activities. Judy loved watching her sons and grandchildren play their sports.&nbsp; She enjoyed trips to Hawaii and was the all-time best at shop-‘til-you-drop.&nbsp; She worked with the Blessings Boutique gang at the church for their annual fundraiser.&nbsp; In her spare time, she loved reading and playing cards (especially Krypto with her good friend Donna Viola), board games, and playing the slot machines at the casino.

Survivors include: her loving husband of 54 years, Gary Holloway; a son, Chris (Julie) Holloway of McPherson, KS; a sister, Karla (R.J.) Reutiman of Centennial, CO; two grandchildren, Baylee (Hunter) Dixon of South Hutchinson, KS and Carter Holloway of Manhattan, KS; two great-grandchildren, Briggs Dixon and Wrenley Dixon; and many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Alta Fleming; a son, Barry Holloway; sister, Jan Pecoraro; two nieces, Kerstin Hall and Stacey Bruza; and a nephew, Jeff Myers.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at McPherson Cemetery with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a deadly knife attack and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, police responded to the 400 Block of SW Woodlawn Avenue in Topeka on the report of a stabbing, according to Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

Officers located two individuals suffering from a stab wound. Both individuals were transported to a local area hospital where one of the victims died. The other individual’s injuries were considered non-life threatening.&nbsp;

A third person later identified as 38-year-old Robert W. Fapp of Topeka, who was believed to be involved in the incident, was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Law Enforcement center to speak with detectives.

As a result of the investigation, Fapp was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections where he was booked in on requested charges of&nbsp;Murder in the 1st degree; In the commission of a felony and Aggravated Battery, according to online jail records.

Along with warmer weather and greener landscapes, the onset of spring brings numerous outdoor opportunities for parents to bond with their children, says Kansas State University child development specialist Bradford Wiles.

“There’s just all kinds of really cool activities and opportunities to support our children’s development in a conscientious and forward-thinking way,” Wiles said.

Wiles said outdoor learning can be very simple.

“Here’s an example: You know more about a tree and its (growth) system than a child could possibly know,” said Wiles, who is also a parent of young children. “You understand that the bark protects it. You understand that it turns the sun's energy into nutrients and energy. You understand it's got a root system.

“Young children don't know these things, and so you don't have to be an expert arborist to be able to say these things and to talk through these things. So, recognize that you have expertise beyond your children’s developmental level.”

Wiles said parents can be creative when planning outdoors time with their kids. Some suggestions include planning a scavenger hunt, or perhaps a bingo-style game in which kids must find certain objects in order to fill their card. Earthworms, anyone?

“One of my favorite things (as a parent) is to try to find different kinds of leaves,” Wiles said. “And if you don't know what the leaf is. that's okay. There are plenty of apps for that as well as you can just take a picture of the leaf and use Google to see what kind of leaf that is.”

Another activity, Wiles adds, is to count “how many different birds you see or hear.”

“The world is out there for you. And children are very curious about it. One of the things that parents can do in all of those things is talk through what happens if we don't treat our planet well. When we don't treat our planet well, those birds aren't here. They've gone further north because they can't handle being near the equator. They can't find things to eat.”

Earth Day is recognized on April 22 in the United States. Many other outdoor activities can help spur children’s learning and awareness toward protecting the world around them.

“For years now, I have made it a policy to pick up at least three pieces of trash whenever I go outside,” Wiles said. So wherever I am, I make it a point to always bring three pieces back. And so, organizing a bunch of children to do that is a lot of fun. It gives them a sense of purpose and recognizing that they're cleaning up and then maybe you talk about recycling.”

Wiles said parents can also find opportunities to learn from their children, who are growing up in a world where sun and wind energy are more common. On rainy days, look for educational books or videos that cover the benefits of protecting the Earth’s natural resources.

“We don’t want this to seem like doom and gloom for the children; you never want to make them feel bad,” Wiles said. “But there&nbsp;are great opportunities to talk through serious things in a safe and cool way while you're learning some things.”

This type of interactive learning, Wiles said, “can not only help you understand your child more -- which is always valuable information -- but can also help you understand what they need to advance and be able to make those changes and advocate for the things that we know are going to be really important as they grow.”

KSRE: Tips for Parents — activities to help to build kids’ appreciation of outside world

KANSAS CITY (AP) —Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday that wide receiver Rashee Rice, who is facing charges that include aggravated assault as a result of a sports car crash in Texas, would participate in the team's voluntary offseason program beginning this week.

Dallas police allege that Rice, the Chiefs' top wide receiver last season, and a friend, Theodore Knox, were driving at high speed in the far left lane of a freeway when they lost control. The Lamborghini that Rice has admitted to driving hit the center median, causing a chain reaction that involved six vehicles and resulted in injures to multiple people.

Rice turned himself in last Thursday after police issued warrants for one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. He was released on bond.

Rice is being represented by Texas state Sen. Royce West, who said in an emailed statement the wide receiver “acknowledges his actions and feels deeply for those injured as a result of this accident,” and that he would continue to cooperate with police.

"I’m leaving that like we’ve done most of these: just for the law enforcement part of it to take place,” Reid said during a Zoom meeting with local reporters Monday. “We will go from there with that. So you can hold your (questions). I have had an opportunity to talk to Rashee. I’m not going to obviously get into that, but that part has been gone through.”

In recent years, the Chiefs have adopted virtual meetings during the early part of their offseason program because they have played into February for the Super Bowl. There is no on-field work allowed during the first two weeks.

After that, teams are allowed to do in-person, on-field work, and Reid would not say whether Rice would participate.

“We’ll just see how it goes there,” Reid said. “I want to keep gathering the information from the law enforcement people. We’ll just see where everything goes from there. Let the process take place.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also said on Zoom Monday that he has worked with Rice throughout the offseason.

“I’m sure we’ll continue that work as the legal process plays out,” he said.

Rice grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills and played college football at nearby SMU, where Knox was still playing until he was suspended following the crash. Knox is facing the same charges as Rice.

The Chiefs selected Rice in the second round of last year's draft, and he quickly emerged as their top wide receiver, especially as others struggled with dropped passes and mental mistakes. He finished second on the team to Travis Kelce with 79 receptions for 938 yards while leading the Chiefs with seven touchdown receptions.

Rice may have been even better in the playoffs. He had 26 catches for 262 yards and a touchdown, including six catches for 39 yards against San Francisco in the Super Bowl, helping the Chiefs win their third Lombardi Trophy in five years.

TEXAS COUNTY, OK –On Sunday the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, FBI and the Texas County Sheriff's Office recovered two deceased persons in rural Texas County, according to a social media report from the Bureau.

"Both individuals will be transported to the Office of the Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner to determine identification and cause and manner of death."

On March 30, the Texas County Sheriff’s Office requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the suspicious disappearance of 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jilian Kelley of Hugoton Kansas.

 Their vehicle was found abandoned near Highway 95 and Road L, south of Elkhart, Kansas, in rural Texas County. OSBI special agents immediately began investigating the vehicle and determined there was evidence to indicate foul play. 

On April 13, 43-year-old Tad Bert Cullum; 54-year-old Tifany Machel Adams; 50-year-old Cole Earl Twombly, and 44-year-old Cora Twombly were arrested in Texas and Cimarron Counties, according to Hunter McKee with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

All four individuals were booked into the Texas County Jail on requested charges that include two counts of First-Degree Murder, two counts of Kidnapping, and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the First Degree.

Peggy Adele McConkey, 91, of Salina, entered Heaven on April 5, 2024. Peggy was born in Junction City, KS on September 24, 1932 to Luke and Mable Owens.

Peggy lived her life placing God first. She started each morning and ended every day in prayer, reading her favorite book, the Bible. She was dedicated to her church, First Assembly of God now known as Heartland Worship Center Assembly of God, sitting in the second row, middle section every Sunday. She served the church for many years setting up communion and cleaning the building. Peggy loved her family and doted on her children and grandchildren by making specially designed shaped birthday cakes including bunny rabbits, pink elephants, and her crème’ de la crème’ the Star Trek Enterprise Ship. She loved to make all kinds of fudge and all flavors of cream cheese wedding mints with specialty shapes for every occasion. She loved plants, old westerns on TV, and riding her yellow bicycle made for two.

She worked hard retiring from Kansas Wesleyan University after many years as a custodian of the girls’ dorm. Being a single mother, she supplemented her income delivering newspapers for the Salina Journal, at times up to 5 paper routes per morning, earning her several awards as The Salina Journal Carrier of the Year.

Peggy is remembered for her love for Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior, her dedication to her family including her church family, and her spunky personality.

She was preceded in death by her daughter and best friend, Patricia; parents; brothers, James, Gerald, Donald, David, Carl and Gene; and sisters, Catherine Alexander and Ruth Monosmith.

She is survived by: her daughters, Susan (Bill) Naecker and Jane (David) Lerret; sons Mark, Phillip, and Paul; grandchildren, Angela, Fawn, Paul Timothy, Amanda, Dove, Joan, Matthew, David and Luke; 27 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; sister, Betty Ann; brother, William; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. &nbsp;

Peggy will live on in our hearts forever. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, at Heartland Worship Center 118 S. 8th St in Salina.

Memorials may be made to the church in memory of Peggy McConkey.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary at a school and have made an arrest.

Just after 3:30 a.m. April 10, police responded to a reported burglary at Sheldon Headstart, 1155 SW Seabrook Avenue in Topeka, according to Police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

Officers located a suspect identified as Blayne R. Blevins, 31, of Topeka, with stolen property. 4 face murder charge as search continues for 2 Kansas women 

READING, Pa. (AP) — Conjoined twins Lori and George Schappell, who pursued separate careers, interests and relationships during lives that defied medical expectations, died this month in Pennsylvania, according to <a href="https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/schappell/lori">funeral home officials</a>. They were 62.

The twins, listed by Guinness World Records as the oldest living conjoined twins, died April 7 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to obituaries posted by Leibensperger Funeral Homes of Hamburg. The cause of death was not detailed.

“When we were born, the doctors didn’t think we’d make 30, but we proved them wrong,” Lori said in an interview when they turned 50, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. George came out as transgender in 2007.

The twins, born Sept. 18, 1961, in West Reading, Pennsylvania, had distinct brains but were joined at the skull. George, who had spina bifida and was 4 inches shorter, was wheeled around by Lori on an adaptive wheeled stool. Despite each having to go where the other went, it was “very important” to both “to live as independently as possible,” the obituary said.

Both graduated from a public high school and took college classes. George went along for six years as Lori worked in a hospital laundry. Lori — “a trophy-winning bowler,” according to the obituary notice — gave up the job in 1996 so her sibling could launch a country music career.

“Since the age of 24, they have maintained their own residence and have traveled extensively,” the obituary notice said. Over the years, they appeared in many documentaries and talk shows, as well as in an episode of the FX medical drama “Nip/Tuck.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Lori was once engaged to be married but that her fiance died in an automobile accident.

“When I went on dates,” Lori said, “George would bring along books to read.”

The twins said in a 1997 documentary that they had different bathing schedules and showered one at a time. George spoke of giving someone you love and respect “the privacy and compromise in situations that you would want them to give you.” Lori said compromise meant "you don’t get everything you want right when you want it.”

Conjoined twins occur once in every 50,000 to 60,000 births when identical twins from a single embryo fail to separate. About 70% are female, and most are stillborn. Only a small percentage are joined at the head, with nearly three-quarters joined at the chest and others at the abdomen or pelvis.

Separation was deemed risky for the Schappell twins, but Lori Schappell told The Associated Press in a 2002 interview at the twins’ apartment in a high-rise seniors complex that she didn't think such an operation was necessary in any case.

“You don’t mess with what God made, even if it means you enjoy both children for a shorter time,” she said. In the 1997 documentary, George also strongly ruled out the idea of separation, saying, “Why fix what is not broken?”

It isn't immediately clear who will now take the title of oldest living conjoined twins. The oldest ever documented were Ronnie and Donnie Galyon, who died in 2020 at age 68. Eng and Chang Bunker, the 19th century “Siamese Twins” who gained fame as a circus act, lived to be 63.

The Schappell twins' survivors include their father and six siblings. Private services are planned, the funeral home said.

 </figure>“When we were born, the doctors didn’t think we’d make 30, but we proved them wrong,” Lori said in an interview when they turned 50, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. George came out as transgender in 2007.The twins, born Sept. 18, 1961, in West Reading, Pennsylvania, had distinct brains but were joined at the skull. George, who had spina bifida and was 4 inches shorter, was wheeled around by Lori on an adaptive wheeled stool. Despite each having to go where the other went, it was “very important” to both “to live as independently as possible,” the obituary said.<figure>

 </figure>Both graduated from a public high school and took college classes. George went along for six years as Lori worked in a hospital laundry. Lori — “a trophy-winning bowler,” according to the obituary notice — gave up the job in 1996 so her sibling could launch a country music career.“Since the age of 24, they have maintained their own residence and have traveled extensively,” the obituary notice said. Over the years, they appeared in many documentaries and talk shows, as well as in an episode of the FX medical drama “Nip/Tuck.”The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Lori was once engaged to be married but that her fiance died in an automobile accident.“When I went on dates,” Lori said, “George would bring along books to read.”The twins said in a 1997 documentary that they had different bathing schedules and showered one at a time. George spoke of giving someone you love and respect “the privacy and compromise in situations that you would want them to give you.” Lori said compromise meant "you don’t get everything you want right when you want it.”Conjoined twins occur once in every 50,000 to 60,000 births when identical twins from a single embryo fail to separate. About 70% are female, and most are stillborn. Only a small percentage are joined at the head, with nearly three-quarters joined at the chest and others at the abdomen or pelvis.Separation was deemed risky for the Schappell twins, but Lori Schappell told The Associated Press in a 2002 interview at the twins’ apartment in a high-rise seniors complex that she didn't think such an operation was necessary in any case.“You don’t mess with what God made, even if it means you enjoy both children for a shorter time,” she said. In the 1997 documentary, George also strongly ruled out the idea of separation, saying, “Why fix what is not broken?”It isn't immediately clear who will now take the title of oldest living conjoined twins. The oldest ever documented were Ronnie and Donnie Galyon, who died in 2020 at age 68. Eng and Chang Bunker, the 19th century “Siamese Twins” who gained fame as a circus act, lived to be 63.The Schappell twins' survivors include their father and six siblings. Private services are planned, the funeral home said.

TEXAS COUNTY, OK—The search for two Kansas women continues as authorities have taken four suspects into custody in connection with their&nbsp;disappearance two weeks ago, according to Hunter McKe with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas, were driving to Oklahoma to pick up Butler’s children to attend a March 30 birthday party in Kansas but never showed up.&nbsp;

On Saturday, authorities arrested one suspect in Texas County, Oklahoma and three in Cimarron County, Oklahoma. All four were being processed in Texas County.&nbsp; &nbsp;Authorities released no additional details Saturday afternoon.

 </figure>TEXAS COUNTY, OK – On March 30, 2024, the Texas County Sheriff’s Office requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the suspicious disappearance of 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jilian Kelley of Hugoton Kansas, according to a media release from the Bureau. Their vehicle was found abandoned near Highway 95 and Road L, south of Elkhart, Kansas, in rural Texas County. OSBI special agents immediately began investigating the vehicle and determined there was evidence to indicate foul play. <figure>

 </figure>On April 13, 43-year-old Tad Bert Cullum; 54-year-old Tifany Machel Adams; 50-year-old Cole Earl Twombly, and 44-year-old Cora Twombly were arrested in Texas and Cimarron Counties, according to Hunter McKee with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.All four individuals were booked into the Texas County Jail on requested charges that include two counts of First-Degree Murder, two counts of Kidnapping, and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the First Degree.The OSBI and local law enforcement are still currently working to locate the two victims.
