BARTON COUNTY —Just after 2 p.m. Friday, officers located hit-and-run suspect Timothy Chism at a Great Bend residence. Chism has been previously booked into the Barton County jail 52 times and was on Community Corrections at the time of the accident that injured two Thursday night.

BARTON COUNTY, Kan. — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a hit and run accident and asking for help to locate a Kansas felon who left the scene.

Just before 9p.m. Thursday, sheriff deputies were notified of an injury accident in the 5600 block of Railroad Avenue, just south of the city of Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

 Deputies were advised two individuals were injured, and one driver had fled the scene. Investigation at the scene indicates a blue 2008 Dodge Caravan was westbound, operated by the driver who fled. That driver, later identified as Timothy Chism, crossed left of center and struck a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox operated by Amanda Staub of Hudson.

EMS transported Staub and a passenger in the Chism vehicle, identified as Mary Schlotthauer of Great Bend to the hospital in Great Bend. Staub was later transported to a Wichita area hospital.

The sheriff’s office is currently looking for Chism on requested charges of felony leaving the scene of an accident and other crimes. Chism has been previously booked into the Barton County jail 52 times and was on Community Corrections at the time of the accident. He has previous convictions for Lewd and Lascivious Behavior; Exposure &lt;16, theft, criminal possession of a weapon and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

HOPE - Theresa (Kandt) Lorson, 93, of rural Hope, died Wed., March 8, 2023 at Via Christi, Manhattan surrounded by family. She was born on the family farm in the Shady Brook Community, rural Herington, Kansas to Heinrich Victor Edward and Sophia (Stroda) Kandt. 

She attended the Union District 18 country school and graduated from Woodbine High School where she excelled in track, specialized in speech and journalism, and graduated as salutatorian, class of 1947. 

After graduation, she worked for six months as a maid in the Junction City Hospital, followed by working two years in payroll and merchandise accounting at United Utilities in Abilene.

On October 15, 1949, she was united in marriage to Paul Lorson at St. John Catholic Church in Herington. He preceded her in death June 13, 2002. 

After marriage, they lived their entire lives on their farm near Hope. They were inseparable and loved to dance, fish, hunt, and travel together. They also worked side by side in almost everything including fixing fences, planting, and harvesting crops, working with the sheep before switching to cattle. Paul was an electrician and together they owned and operated Lorson Electric where, for many years, they also manufactured Handy-Dandy welders and shipped them throughout the U.S. 

Manufacturing began in their farm shop where they worked every chance between farming duties and late into the night building the welders after putting the kids to bed. After moving the shop into Hope and hiring more help, she served only as the secretary and treasurer for the electric and welder business. They also raised registered black German Shepherd dogs for many years, shipping them all over the U.S., many for placement in sheriff and police departments. Theresa was a Tupperware dealer for five years, during which she was once named ‘Dealer of the Year.’ She drove a 45-passenger school bus for Hope Rural Vista School District 481 for eighteen years, owned and operated the Hope Laundromat for nineteen years and was a National Weather Service observer for twenty years. Lastly, from July, 1991 thru December, 2020, she was an assistant at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Hope.

In December, 1953, she was chosen to represent Hope, Kansas on Bob Hope’s first television “Christmas Special” in Hollywood, California, along with four other young ladies from towns named Hope in other states. With all expenses paid by the JELLO company, Theresa, Paul, and three-month old infant, flew to Hollywood for a week to sightsee, have dinner with Bob Hope and his wife, Dolores, and prepare for attending the show, returning home in time for Christmas. At the time, the television dealer owned the only TV in Hope, Kansas, so anyone who wanted to watch the program traveled to friends’ and relatives’ homes elsewhere who had television sets.

Theresa was an active member of St. Philip Catholic Church, Altar Society, National Council of Catholic Women, Young Farm Wives and Hope Community Historical Association. She was one of the historians for St. Phillip Catholic Church and sang in the choir. In 1986, she co-compiled the more than 200-page book on the history of Hope entitled “A Century of Hope.” She also enjoyed various writing styles and opportunities ranging from creating readings presented by her children at school contests to articles for local newspapers.

 Through it all, Theresa’s family always came first.

Survivors are three sons, Phillip Lorson, Hope; Eric Lorson, Salina; Barry Lorson, Hope; five daughters, Rita (Joseph) Sutcliffe, Firestone, Colorado; Sheila (Lanny) Mai, Wichita; Denise (Rex) Sageser, Wichita; Diana (Dennis) Okruhlik, Topeka; Maria (Clyde) Harmon, Lenexa; two brothers, Keith (Elsie) Kandt, Lindsborg; Robert (Alicia) Kandt, Wichita; sister-in-law, Joan Kandt, Wichita; 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. 

Also preceding her in death were her parents, daughter-in-law Debra, three brothers, Edward, Elmer and Kenneth Kandt, sisters, Berneice DeWitt and Arlene McWhirter, brothers-in-law Dennis DeWitt and Eugene McWhirter, and sister-in-law Alo Jean Kandt.

Following cremation, a rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Philip Catholic Church – Hope at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 15, 2023, with Fr. George Chalbhagam and Fr. Peter O’Donnell officiating. Burial will be in St. Philip Cemetery, Hope followed by family visitation at the Hope Catholic Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Philip Cemetery, St. Philip Catholic Church, Catholic Charities, or donor’s choice.

WICHITA – Springing forward can mean falling back into a bad driving habit – drowsy driving. The arrival of Daylight Saving Time this weekend means one less hour of sleep, a darker morning commute, and the potential for more sleepy drivers on the road.

AAA is reminding drivers to adjust their sleeping habits along with their clocks, to stay alert behind the wheel and to look out for pedestrians, especially children who will be on their way to school and may be hard to see.

“When the time changes, sleep cycles are interrupted and drivers can be more tired than they realize,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Losing one hour of sleep takes an adjustment and drivers need to prepare by getting more rest, especially on Sunday.”

AAA cautions drivers to stay alert as they spring forward this weekend

The Rudd Foundation has announced its sixth class of Rudd Scholars, comprised of 30 Kansas high school seniors selected following a competitive application process that focuses on the students and their life stories, in addition to academic accomplishments, test scores and extracurricular activities.  

The newly selected scholars will bring the total to 111 Rudd Scholars for the 2023-24 school year. Of the new class, 18 scholars will attend Wichita State, six will attend Fort Hays State, and six will attend Emporia State.

All Rudd Scholars receive a four-year college scholarship to attend either Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University or Wichita State University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in a field of their choice. Each Rudd Scholarship covers all tuition and fees, books, supplies, and on-campus room and board remaining after other aid, grants, and scholarships received by the student. The expected value for the 30 new scholarship recipients is approximately $1.5 million over four years. 

“The Foundation is honored to offer the Rudd Scholarship to these exceptional young men and women, and we look forward to watching each of their journeys through our program and into their professional careers,” said Darrell Swank, president of the Rudd Foundation.  “Leslie Rudd’s vision in establishing this program was to provide students of this caliber with the opportunity to fully experience college without financial stress, graduate debt-free, and be inspired to pursue their own passions and dreams, all while remaining connected to their Kansas communities. Area students selected as Rudd Scholars

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects in connection with a rural Kansas burglary.

On Monday afternoon, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible burglary in progress at 2830 102nd Road, approximately one half mile south of the City of Delia, Kansas, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The caller reported a white Jeep on the property.  The 2002 Jeep Cherokee fled northbound from the first arriving sheriff’s deputy on the property. 

 The deputy lost sight of the Jeep&nbsp; in a thickly wooded area, headed southwest at a high rate of speed thru what had previously been a cornfield. 

 The vehicle then accessed 102nd Road and went westbound when another sheriff’s unit took over the pursuit. The vehicle continued down several low maintenance roads and into Pottawatomie County west of 63 Highway.&nbsp; The driver eventually lost control and the Jeep left the roadway at the T intersection of Doyle Creek and Pleasant View Road in Pottawatomie County, according to Morse.

The Jeep caught fire as did the surrounding field. The vehicle and its contents were destroyed, according to Morse. Pottawatomie County Sheriff, Fire, Emergency Management, and KHP responded to the incident. 

Jackson County deputies took the alleged driver and owner of the Jeep 45-year-old&nbsp; Christopher Gerard Keinsmith of St. Mary’s and the passenger 27-year-old Marc Allen Nichols of Rossville.

 Kleinsmith was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of burglary, criminal trespassing, felony fleeing and eluding. Nichols was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of burglary, and a probation violation. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants, according to Morse.

LEAVENWORTH — A local parent was 
outraged when she opened up her representative’s February newsletter and
 found her daughter’s rainbow drawing published as an example of 
indoctrination in the school system.&nbsp;

Courtney Ricard said her 
fourth-grader drew the picture to show that everyone was welcome in the 
David Brewer Elementary library.

“I found it and was irate, because he
 didn’t ask for permission,” Ricard said. “He bleeped out her name, 
which he thinks is acceptable, but you can’t go to an art museum and 
print out a picture of someone’s artwork without asking their 
permission.”&nbsp;

Republican, published the drawing in his February newsletter. The 
picture was one of several drawings done by third and fourth graders at 
David Brewer Elementary School put up in the library.&nbsp;

The drawings were done on sheets of 
paper that had the words “My school library is for every student!” 
printed on top. Other drawings on the wall included stick figures, cats,
 a Japanese flag and what appeared to be a depiction of biracial 
friendship.&nbsp;

Proctor said there was more LGBTQ 
content put on the wall than the drawings mentioned in the newsletter 
and felt it was necessary to alert the Leavenworth community about the 
issue. He said blacking out the students’ names gave them enough 
privacy.&nbsp;

“It was impossible to identify what 
students did what artworks, and nobody on the planet would know who had 
done that drawing if the kid’s mom hadn’t thrown a fit in the school 
board meeting,” Proctor said during a Tuesday interview with the 
Reflector.&nbsp;

While parents said the children were 
allowed to draw whatever they wanted, Proctor felt they had been coached
 into creating LGBTQ content, and didn’t think it was appropriate to 
teach this subject matter.&nbsp;

“I find it impossible to believe that
 an entire grade of third graders and fourth graders, all on their own, 
decided to draw rainbow flags and talk about LGBTQ and spell those 
things out on their artwork,” Proctor said. “I find it impossible to 
believe that was not the assignment and that they were not coached to do
 that by the teacher. That’s just implausible in the extreme.”&nbsp;

Brandi Bond, library aide at the school, said this was a fairly new 
issue, and had only begun hearing complaints about book displays and 
drawings in the library this school year.

“Politics don’t belong in elementary schools,” Bond said. “Our kids deserve to be protected.”

Though there are gay parents who have
 a child at the school, Proctor said this couldn’t have greatly 
influenced the drawings without teachers promoting a “radical, woke 
agenda.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;Proctor is one of many Kansas 
Republicans at the local and state level who have emphasized what they 
describe as a “woke, sexualized agenda,” as well as a “radical, woke 
agenda” that is putting students in danger, though few have given 
specifics about <a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/01/10/kansas-gop-rails-against-woke-agenda-will-work-toward-stricter-abortion-rules/">what this agenda entails</a>.&nbsp;

When asked to define this agenda, Proctor said he didn’t want to 
discuss it but knew schools should stick to educational basics, such as 
reading, writing and arithmetic.

Other lawmakers have said parents need more control over classroom materials to prevent indoctrination. The Kansas House has&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/23/kansas-house-and-senate-both-pass-legislation-targeting-transgender-youth/">passed a transgender student athlete</a>
 ban, and the Senate passed a bill effectively banning doctors from 
providing gender-affirming care to minors. One week in February <a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/13/kansas-democrats-describe-attempt-to-ban-transgender-student-athletes-as-crushing-weight/">referred to as “hate week,”&nbsp;</a>because of the amount of anti-LGBTQ legislation debated.

LGBTQ activists have said there is an increasingly worrying trend toward intolerance in schools statewide, with curriculum and<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/09/16/community-divided-over-kansas-school-district-book-ban-push/"> library books under scrutiny</a>. Lawmakers have framed the discussion in terms of parental rights to dictate education.

&nbsp;“You cannot tell me that all those 
third graders and fourth graders learned to do that from two gay parents
 that showed up at a school board meeting,” Proctor said.&nbsp;

Krista Nussbaum and her partner, 
Teagan Andrews, are a gay couple with several children in the 
Leavenworth school system and one at David Brewer. They attended the 
Monday Leavenworth Board of Education meeting to address the newsletter.

The two have ongoing issues with 
Proctor and Vanessa Reid, a conservative Leavenworth board of education 
member who has joined forces with Proctor to fight the “radical woke 
agenda” in local schools.

Nussbaum said Reid has used bullying 
tactics on Facebook in an attempt to manufacture outrage against local 
schools and libraries.&nbsp;

Reid didn’t attend the Monday meeting, and has not responded to the Reflector’s inquiries to comment.&nbsp;

“It’s not anyone else’s business to attack a child for their beliefs, ever,” Nussbaum said. “Keep your politics off my kids.”&nbsp;

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a building fire and have made an arrest.

Just after 4a.m. Tuesday, fire crews&nbsp;responded to reports of a vacant commercial building fire at 1221 SW Huntoon Street in Topeka, according to a media release.&nbsp;

First responders&nbsp;found smoke and flames coming from the single story building. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack.

Investigators determine the fire was intentionally set and police arrested 65-year-year-old Joslynn Y. Barnett of Topeka and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested arson charges.

The total estimated loss from the fire is $18,000, all of which is associated with structural loss. There were no injuries. Investigators did not find working smoke detectors in the building.

Kansas woman accused of starting fire that caused $18K damage

WICHITA – It’s severe weather season. As many people in this part of the country are aware, strong thunderstorms and even tornadoes can strike quickly and fiercely. Dangerous, damaging storms can catch motorists on the roads, so AAA Kansas urges drivers and their passengers to be prepared and take appropriate safety precautions should they encounter severe weather while traveling in a vehicle.

"Storms are common throughout the spring and summer, so chances are, drivers will face storm-related challenges while in their vehicles," said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. "A vehicle can either be very dangerous or a place of safety, depending on the weather conditions. The key is being prepared for severe weather and reacting the right way to what what Mother Nature throws at you."

Heavy rain and flooding Heavy downpours make it difficult to see while driving. AAA Kansas recommends regularly changing windshield wiper blades to keep drivers’ views as clear as possible. If visibility is severely limited during heavy rain, drivers should reduce their speed and if they can safely do so, pull off the road out of traffic lanes, turn on flashing hazard lights, and wait until the rain lightens.

Drivers should be reminded that it’s Kansas law that if windshield wipers are on, headlights should be as well. Headlights can help divers see better but also allow their vehicle to be seen by other drivers.

Pooling water on roadways can cause hydroplaning and loss of vehicle control, so motorists should reduce their speeds during rainy conditions. Roadways completely covered by water are a particular danger.

“Avoid driving into floodwater,” warned Steward. “Flooding causes more deaths than any other storm-related event, and many of those deaths occur in vehicles. As little as 12 inches of moving water can sweep most vehicles off the road. The slogan ‘Turn around, don’t drown’ is an important one to remember and follow.”

Hail Hailstorms hit with little warning and usually only last for about five minutes, but hailstones – frozen pellets of rain – can cause major damage in that short period of time.

There were more than 4,400 major hailstorms in the United States in 2022, with 289 – fourth most in the nation – occurring in Kansas, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Most hailstones are about the size of a pea or marble, but they can get as large as a softball in a severe storm.

“Hail of most any size can dent your car, and larger stones can smash your windows,” said Gary Tomes, Regional Insurance Manager for AAA Kansas. “And this is not an uncommon occurrence in Kansas. Fortunately, hail damage to a vehicle is covered by your comprehensive auto insurance policy, which covers physical damage to your vehicle not caused by a collision.”

To protect your car from hail storms, park your car in a covered spot whenever possible.

If you’re in your car when a hailstorm hits and see a safe place close by, such as a highway overpass or gas station or bank awning, drive to it as soon as you can.
