WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jeffrey-epstein">Jeffrey Epstein</a>&nbsp;wrote in a 2019 email to a journalist that Donald Trump “knew about the girls," according to documents made public Wednesday, but what he knew — and whether it pertained to the sex offender’s crimes — is unclear, and the White House quickly accused Democrats of selectively leaking the emails to smear the president.

The Republican businessman-turned-politician has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and has said he ended their relationship years ago.

The version of the 2011 email released by the Democrats redacted the name of the victim, but Republicans on the committee later said it was Virginia Giuffre, who accused Epstein of arranging for her to have sexual encounters with a number of his rich and powerful friends. Epstein&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jeffrey-epstein-jail-suicide-prison-death-8d194a756f2b429067f009a0c70f96c0">took his own life</a>&nbsp;in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges.

Giuffre said Trump ‘couldn’t have been friendlier'

Giuffre, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virginia-roberts-giuffre-obit-778c4fdd6fac2522133ca3d79244bccd">died earlier this year</a>, had long insisted that Trump was not among the men who had victimized her.

In a court deposition, she said under oath that she didn’t believe Trump had any knowledge of Epstein’s misconduct with underage girls. And in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virginia-giuffre-memoir-jeffrey-epstein-prince-andrew-0adb8b983ac18a45fc7ec035dc789d08">her recently released memoir</a>, she described meeting Trump only once, when she worked as a spa attendant at&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/993263aaefab49a7988bb4ccb808791d">his Mar-a-Lago club</a>&nbsp;in Palm Beach, Florida, and did not accuse him of wrongdoing.

Giuffre wrote that she was introduced to Trump by her father, who also worked at the club. She described Trump as friendly and said he offered to help her get babysitting jobs with parents at the club.

Trump “couldn’t have been friendlier,” Giuffre wrote.

Other members of Epstein’s household staff also said in sworn depositions that, while Trump did stop by Epstein’s house, they didn’t see him engage in any inappropriate conduct.

Republicans says emails released to tarnish Trump

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Democrats “selectively leaked emails” to “create a fake narrative to smear President Trump.”

In July, Trump said he had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jeffrey-epstein-congress-ghislaine-maxwell-justice-department-3ca45e130deb5f2eee8deff36d99734f">banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago</a>&nbsp;because his one-time friend was “taking people who worked for me," including Giuffre. The women, he said, were “taken out of the spa, hired by him — in other words, gone.”

“I said, ‘Listen, we don’t want you taking our people,’” Trump told reporters. Asked if Giuffre was one of the employees poached by Epstein, the president demurred but then said Epstein “stole her.”

The emails made public Wednesday are part of a batch of 23,000 documents provided by Epstein's estate to the Oversight Committee.

Shortly after Democrats released the Trump-related emails, committee Republicans countered by disclosing what they said was an additional 20,000 pages of documents from Epstein’s estate. Among them: copies of pages from a James Patterson book about the ex-financier.

The release resurfaces a storyline that had shadowed Trump's presidency during the summer when the FBI and the Justice Department abruptly announced that they would not be releasing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jeffrey-epstein-justice-department-pam-bondi-03fbcd024f631440f7ed62b3c6927db3">additional documents</a>&nbsp;that investigators had spent weeks examining, disappointing conspiracy theorists and online sleuths who had expected to see new revelations.

In one 2019 email to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/melania-trump-michael-wolff-lawsuit-epstein-e5a52952be556d2976d5aeaf6e40b1db">journalist Michael Wolff</a>, who has written extensively about Trump, Epstein wrote of Trump, “Of course he knew about the girls as he asked ghislaine to stop.”

In an April 2, 2011, email to Maxwell, a former Epstein girlfriend now imprisoned for conspiring to engage in sex trafficking, Epstein wrote, “I want you to realize that that dog that hasn't barked is Trump. (Redacted name) spent hours at my house with him ,, he has never once been mentioned. police chief. etc. im 75 % there."

Maxwell replied the same day: “I have been thinking about that.”

The name of the person said to have spent time with Trump was blacked out of the email, but House Democrats identified the person as a “victim.”

Leavitt said that the unnamed person referenced in the emails is Giuffre, who had accused&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/king-charles-prince-andrew-strips-royal-titles-7fad76a46a211ae24b605cbd24e80748">Britain’s then-Prince Andrew</a>&nbsp;and other influential men of sexually exploiting her as a teenager and who died by suicide in April. Andrew, who recently was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/king-charles-prince-andrew-strips-royal-titles-7fad76a46a211ae24b605cbd24e80748">stripped of his titles</a>&nbsp;and evicted from his royal residence by King Charles III after weeks of pressure to act over his relationship with Epstein, has rejected Giuffre’s allegations and said he didn’t recall meeting her.

Leavitt said in a statement that Giuffre had “repeatedly said President Trump was not involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever and ‘couldn’t have been friendlier’ to her in their limited interactions.”

“The fact remains that President Trump kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club decades ago for being a creep to his female employees, including Giuffre,” the statement said. "These stories are nothing more than bad-faith efforts to distract from President Trump’s historic accomplishments, and any American with common sense sees right through this hoax and clear distraction from the government opening back up again.”

Messages seeking comment were left with Wolff, Maxwell attorney David Markus and representatives for Giuffre’s family.

Maxwell's interview with the Justice Department

Maxwell, interviewed in July by the Justice Department’s second-in-command, repeatedly denied witnessing any sexually inappropriate interactions involving Trump.

“I actually never saw the President in any type of massage setting,” Maxwell&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/epstein-maxwell-justice-department-interview-transcripts-1d38a010e72b5b58cca944cb3bbb0e6a">told Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche</a>, according to a transcript of the interview. “I never witnessed the President in any inappropriate setting in any way. The President was never inappropriate with anybody. In the times that I was with him, he was a gentleman in all respects.”

Giuffre came forward publicly after an initial investigation ended in an 18-month Florida jail term for Epstein, who made&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/96bc4bdbd240454293888afb1f5bc600">a secret deal</a>&nbsp;to avoid federal prosecution by pleading guilty instead to relatively minor state-level charges of soliciting prostitution. He was released in 2009.

In subsequent lawsuits, Giuffre said she was a teenage spa attendant at Mar-a-Lago when she was approached in 2000 by Maxwell.

Lawyers for Maxwell,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/who-is-ghislaine-maxwell-fa2c504a6dfe30ce1686b857a4123b7b">a British socialite</a>, have argued that she never should have been tried or convicted for her role in luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein. She is serving a 20-year prison term, though she was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/epstein-ghislaine-maxwell-justice-department-prison-27d53cd22f8c53d9f2b5012cea32eb5e">moved from a low-security federal prison in Florida</a>&nbsp;to a minimum-security prison camp in Texas after the Blanche interview.

TOPEKA, Kansas — The Kansas City Chiefs put out a request for proposals to design a new stadium on the Kansas side of the state line and are negotiating for land near the Kansas Speedway, according to two reports from Kansas City area talk show hosts.&nbsp;

Pete Mundo of KCMO talk radio&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcmotalkradio.com/shows/mundo-in-the-morning-2/" target="_blank">broke the news</a>&nbsp;that the Chiefs contacted multiple firms regarding a new stadium to be built at Interstate 435 and Interstate 70. He said the news was confirmed by several sources.

Mundo stressed that the RFP didn’t mean the Chiefs had selected Kansas as the location for a new stadium and added that his “gut” said they would stay in Missouri.&nbsp;

On Monday, Kevin Kietzman said on his podcast that the Chiefs are in negotiations with NASCAR and the state of Kansas to acquire land just west of the Kansas Speedway. He said the Chiefs also may be building a hotel by the Hollywood Casino and creating an entertainment district.&nbsp;

“NASCAR owns a total of 880 acres of land at Village West, folks,” Kietzman said. “They only use 300 of them.”

Patrick Lowry, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Commerce, said major development projects require confidentiality and the agency has no comment on negotiations regarding the stadium.&nbsp;

“Kansas Department of Commerce continues to conduct a careful analysis of costs and benefits as part of crafting agreements to keep the Chiefs and Royals in the region while maximizing growth opportunities for Kansas,” Lowry said.

The Kansas Legislature&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/07/07/kansas-lawmakers-extend-deadline-for-chiefs-royals-to-accept-stadium-incentives/" target="_blank">agreed to finance</a>&nbsp;up to 70% of the project, with a minimum $1 billion price tag, by issuing bonds to be repaid with sales tax collected in the STAR Bond district.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Missouri lawmakers hoping to convince the Chiefs and Kansas City Royals to remain in the state have&nbsp;authorized bonds covering up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, plus up to $50 million of tax credits for each stadium and unspecified aid from local governments.

Clark Hunt, the Chiefs owner, recently told reporter that he and his family were still considering options in both Missouri and Kansas.

“I wouldn’t say we’re in limbo. Stadium projects move at their own pace,” Hunt said. “We’ve learned over the years that you can’t really force them to go faster, even if you want them to. And so it’s just important for us to keep working on both options.”

The possibility of moving the Chiefs stadium across the state line has both excited and concerned Kansas leaders. In Wyandotte County, where the Village West area is located, an economic development leader is hesitant to talk about what the stadium might bring to his county, although he’s positive that location would be a strong one for the Chiefs.&nbsp;

“I think that area is the No. 1 tourist destination in the state of Kansas,” said Greg Kindle, president of the Wyandotte Economic Development Council. “There’s infrastructure and highway infrastructure. We know there’s an ability to get people in and out of major sporting events, and if we can put a deal together that works for everybody, it’s a win-win.”

Much still needs to be assessed in terms of the economic development benefits for Wyandotte County.&nbsp;

“We’re still working through the economics of it,” Kindle said. “It has to be revenue development that works for the sports teams but also drives revenue into the community. On the front end, it’s super exciting to have a national sports team in your community because you get a lot of branding, you get more tourism, you get people who are excited about being near that environment.”

Kindle referred to the success of the Kansas Speedway and Sporting KC, both of which are in the area and hold numerous events all year.&nbsp;

“Tourism areas benefit,” he said. “New things have to be happening. This would be an interesting additional asset to the area that we hope would bring in additional hotels and restaurants and interest in that area.”

Kindle said the negotiations with the Chiefs are going on through state officials and Wyandotte has offered support as needed. He’s excited about the idea the team may come to his county, but he also wants to encourage everyone to think long-term.

“They’ve been in their current location for what, 50 or 60 years. We want to make sure that whatever happens here builds on what they’ve done and the success that they’ve had, but also that we ensure that we do, in fact, get that ancillary growth that goes with the project,” Kindle said.&nbsp;

J.C. Bradbury, an economist and professor at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, is releasing a book next year titled “This One Will be Different: False Promises and Fiscal Realities of Publicly Funded Stadiums.”&nbsp;

He said economic justifications for putting tax dollars behind stadium development don’t hold up.

Economists look at economic development differently than other professionals, who consider the process about increasing business activity in a community, Bradbury said.

“Economists use the term economic development to describe improving economic outcomes. And stadiums are absolutely not true economic development catalysts,” he said.

Bradbury said he has looked for studies that show there is an economic benefit to stadiums and hasn’t found one.

“If you went and called a doctor for a study on the dangers of smoking, you wouldn’t be able to find a doctor who would say smoking is good for you, right?” Bradbury said. “If you would ask economists about the economic benefits of stadiums, you probably couldn’t find an economist who would say that they’re beneficial. But no one wants to listen to economists on that.”

Multiple changes happen in communities when stadiums are built that lead people to believe the economy benefits, he said. Increased spending definitely happening around the stadium, but Bradbury said that spending is pulled from restaurants and stores not in the stadium’s entertainment sphere.&nbsp;

Other factors include being unable to track businesses that don’t open up in a stadium district, such as doctor’s offices and retail stores, because of traffic and people who don’t want to live near stadiums, he said.&nbsp;

“There’s actually some negative spillover effects that no one likes to talk about,” Bradbury said. He gave an example of an area in Atlanta that was near where stadiums were formerly located. For years, it was a “ghost town,” but after stadiums moved, it is now a thriving commercial district.

There are positives, including the novelty effect when the stadium first opens, Bradbury said.&nbsp;

“This is a private business that largely benefits the owners of the team. It’s generating hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars,” Bradbury said. “Athletes are paid millions of dollars of salaries. These organizations exist as economic entities because they’re profitable. There’s zero justification for taxpayers putting a dime for professional sports stadiums, but we just sort of got in the habit of doing that, and now I’m hoping to try to break this habit.”

He said the news was confirmed by several sources.Mundo stressed that the RFP didn’t mean the Chiefs had selected Kansas as the location for a new stadium and added that his “gut” said they would stay in Missouri.&nbsp;On Monday, Kevin Kietzman said on his podcast that the Chiefs are in negotiations with NASCAR and the state of Kansas to acquire land just west of the Kansas Speedway. He said the Chiefs also may be building a hotel by the Hollywood Casino and creating an entertainment district.&nbsp;“NASCAR owns a total of 880 acres of land at Village West, folks,” Kietzman said. “They only use 300 of them.”Patrick Lowry, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Commerce, said major development projects require confidentiality and the agency has no comment on negotiations regarding the stadium.&nbsp;“Kansas Department of Commerce continues to conduct a careful analysis of costs and benefits as part of crafting agreements to keep the Chiefs and Royals in the region while maximizing growth opportunities for Kansas,” Lowry said.The Kansas Legislature&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/07/07/kansas-lawmakers-extend-deadline-for-chiefs-royals-to-accept-stadium-incentives/" target="_blank">agreed to finance</a>&nbsp;up to 70% of the project, with a minimum $1 billion price tag, by issuing bonds to be repaid with sales tax collected in the STAR Bond district.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Missouri lawmakers hoping to convince the Chiefs and Kansas City Royals to remain in the state have&nbsp;authorized bonds covering up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, plus up to $50 million of tax credits for each stadium and unspecified aid from local governments.Clark Hunt, the Chiefs owner, recently told reporter that he and his family were still considering options in both Missouri and Kansas.“I wouldn’t say we’re in limbo. And so it’s just important for us to keep working on both options.”<h2>Wyandotte opportunity</h2>The possibility of moving the Chiefs stadium across the state line has both excited and concerned Kansas leaders. In Wyandotte County, where the Village West area is located, an economic development leader is hesitant to talk about what the stadium might bring to his county, although he’s positive that location would be a strong one for the Chiefs.&nbsp;“I think that area is the No. 1 tourist destination in the state of Kansas,” said Greg Kindle, president of the Wyandotte Economic Development Council. “There’s infrastructure and highway infrastructure. We know there’s an ability to get people in and out of major sporting events, and if we can put a deal together that works for everybody, it’s a win-win.”Much still needs to be assessed in terms of the economic development benefits for Wyandotte County.&nbsp;“We’re still working through the economics of it,” Kindle said. “It has to be revenue development that works for the sports teams but also drives revenue into the community. On the front end, it’s super exciting to have a national sports team in your community because you get a lot of branding, you get more tourism, you get people who are excited about being near that environment.”Kindle referred to the success of the Kansas Speedway and Sporting KC, both of which are in the area and hold numerous events all year.&nbsp;“Tourism areas benefit,” he said. “New things have to be happening. This would be an interesting additional asset to the area that we hope would bring in additional hotels and restaurants and interest in that area.”Kindle said the negotiations with the Chiefs are going on through state officials and Wyandotte has offered support as needed. He’s excited about the idea the team may come to his county, but he also wants to encourage everyone to think long-term.“They’ve been in their current location for what, 50 or 60 years. • Prior to that game, Kansas State earned a dominating 42-17 win at Kansas, its 17th straight wins over the Jayhawks.

• Avery Johnson was 11-of-17 for 231 yards and accounted for four touchdowns against the Jayhawks, while Jayce Brown caught four passes for 160 yards, including a 78-yard score.

• Defensively, the Wildcats forced four total turnovers and pressured quarterback Jalon Daniels most of the day. Kansas averaged just 3.2 yards per snap in the contest.

• The win at KU came on the heels of a 41-28 victory over TCU, a game that featured defensive touchdowns by safety Wesley Fair (15-yard fumble return) and linebacker Des Purnell (25-yard interception return).

• Purnell’s pick-6 came on the very next play after he had a sack and was part of a two-interception game with four total passes defended en route to Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.

LOOKING FOR THE RARE WIN IN STILLWATER

• Kansas State is just 9-24 all-time against Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Its last win at Boone Pickens Stadium was a 45-40 upset over the 10th-ranked Cowboys in 2017.

• In that contest, Byron Pringle had three receiving touchdowns in addition to an 89-yard kickoff return score.

• The victory in 2017 was the Wildcats’ first in Stillwater since 1999 as the Wildcats have only won once at Oklahoma State in the last 26 years.

• Of Kansas State’s last 22 games dating back to Week 2 of the 2024 season, 11 have been decided by just one score.

• Last year, the Wildcats went 4-2 in one-possession games. All four of the victories were fourth-quarter comebacks, which ranked second in the nation to Illinois’ five.

• This season, K-State has played five one-possession games but has only come out on the winning side one time. In four of those games, the Wildcats had the ball with a chance to either tie or take the lead late in the fourth quarter.

• The Cats have hit the 30-point mark in 22 of their 33 Big 12 games since the start of 2022, including four times this season with a highwater mark of 42 points at Kansas.

• K-State had a four-game streak scoring at least 30 points against UCF (34), Baylor (34), TCU (41) and Kansas, its longest streak overall since doing so in six-straight games during the 2003 season.TOTAL OFFENSE• K-State has totaled at least 375 yards of offense in 36 of the last 49 games dating back to the beginning of the 2022 season.

Two of their wins when going under 375 yards of offense have come this season.RED ZONE SUCCESS• Kansas State enters the week ranked 12th nationally and third in the Big 12 by converting on 92.6% (25-of-27) of its red zone opportunities.

• That included a streak of 22-straight red-zone scores, which was the second-longest active streak in the Big 12 until taking a knee at the end of the Kansas game to run out the clock.

• Since Chris Klieman’s first season at K-State in 2019, the Wildcats have been the best in the Big 12 in terms of converting red-zone opportunities into points.

• The Wildcats rank first in the Big 12 with a 92.2% (294-of-326) success rate in the red zone since 2019, just ahead of Texas Tech (88.0%), Colorado (86.8%) and Oklahoma State (86.8%).

• Johnson’s mark against Kansas was the third best by a Big 12 quarterback in a conference game this season (min. 15 attempts).AVERY ON THE RUN• Avery Johnson ranks fifth in school history among quarterbacks with 1,244 career rushing yards, while his 5.06-yard career average on 246 carries ranks eighth in school history among all players and second among quarterbacks (Jesse Ertz, 2014-17 – 5.46).

• When taking away sack yardage, Johnson has rushed for 1,418 yards on 224 true rushing attempts, good for a 6.33-yard clip.

BROWN DELIVERS• Wide receiver Jayce Brown leads the Wildcats this season with 38 receptions for 630 yards and four touchdowns.

• He had his best game as a Wildcat at Kansas, catching four passes for 160 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown. It was the most receiving yards by a Wildcat since Byron Pringle had 166 yards at Oklahoma State in 2017.

• Brown’s 40.0-yard average was the fourth-highest average nationally in a game this season (minimum four catches) and the third-highest average by a Big 12 player since 2018.

• A native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Brown has a career receiving average of 16.88 yards to rank eighth in school history and fourth in the nation among active players.

CAREER RECORD FOR OAKLEY• Tight end Garrett Oakley has tallied 12 career receiving touchdowns, which is the most ever by a K-State tight end and tied for 10th in school history overall.

• The previous record of 10 was shared by current Washington Commander Ben Sinnott (2021-23) and Henry Childs (1971-73).

• Oakley, a product of Columbus, Nebraska, has five receiving touchdowns this season, which is tied for third in the nation among tight ends and second in school history at the position. Each of his five scores have come since September 27, which is tied for the most in the nation at the position.

• Two of Oakley’s touchdowns came against TCU as he is one of two Big 12 tight ends with a multi-touchdown game in conference play this season.

• Oakley also ranks fifth in school history among tight ends in career catches (63) and yards (723). He has 30 catches this year, just three shy of entering the top-five list in school history at the position.

TOUGH RUNNING BY JACKSON• Running back Joe Jackson tallied the first 100-yard rushing game of his career against TCU, going for 110 yards on a career-high 27 attempts. It shattered his previous bests of 61 yards on 13 carries the week prior at Baylor.

• Most of Jackson’s damage against the Horned Frogs came in the second half when he tallied 88 yards on 21 carries.

• He backed that up with another solid outing at Kansas, rushing for 69 yards on 20 carries, including 35 yards on 13 attempts in the second half to help run out the clock.

DEFENSIVE NOTESOPENING DRIVE DEFENSE• Kansas State has allowed points only three times on opponents’ first drive of the game or second half, which was a field goal to open the game at Baylor, a short-field touchdown by Kansas following a fumble on the opening kickoff and a score by Texas Tech to start the second half.

• Of the 18 total drives to start a half, the K-State defense has forced 12 punts – including seven 3-and-outs – an interception, a missed field goal and a turnover on downs.

Three day weather forecast Salina, November 10 - November 12

WASHINGTON (AP)—Vice President JD Vance said Americans are “about to start suffering some very real consequences” at airports and with SNAP benefits because of the government shutdown, now in its 38th day.

“After 30 days of this thing, 40 days of this thing, you’re going to start seeing very real travel delays. That’s because the Democrat government shut down,” Vance told reporters at the White House. “They should stop this charade and open up the government.”

Meanwhile, a federal judge Thursday ordered Trump’s administration to fully fund SNAP for November, three days after the government said it would only partially pay for the food aid program used by 1 in 8 Americans.

Judge John J. McConnell Jr. in Providence, Rhode Island, ruled that it must provide the money by Friday in response to a coalition of cities and nonprofit groups. The judge was one of two who said last week that the government couldn’t pause the program entirely this month because of the government shutdown.

“The defendants failed to consider the practical consequences associated with this decision to only partially fund SNAP,” McConnell said. “They knew that there would be a long delay in paying partial Snap payments and failed to consider the harms individuals who rely on those benefits would suffer.”

Dr. Marilee McBoyle-Wiesner, a Dickinson County trailblazing surgeon, who tells her story about defying the odds on becoming Kansas' first female board-certified general surgeon.

Dr. Marilee’s McBoyle-Wiesner’s fascinating journey started in 1959 when she underwent tonsillectomy surgery at age 7, performed by a woman, Dr. Ruth Montgomery-Short, which was uncommon at the time.&nbsp;

“She would tell me about three daughters she had at home and I was 7, but I remember thinking I have never known a lady like this, she takes tonsils out during the day and she goes to her daughters at home at night,” she said. “That made an impression on me.”

A couple years later, she read a book “Elizabeth Blackwell: The First Woman Doctor” which impressed her as well.

“I read that, and oh my the hardships she went through and the discrimination, I mean it was big league and I remember being so impressed by her on how she pressed on,” she said.

At the time, McBoyle-Wiesner then told her mother she wanted become a doctor.

Born and raised on a farm 10 - 11 miles south of Abilene, Marilee commended and appreciated her parents for their unconditional love and support they expressed to her when she was pursuing her medical career.

“As I got older, I appreciated them in ways that I did not when I was younger,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marilee is the oldest of 2 sisters, as her father raised cattle and her mother being an elementary school teacher. Both her parents were successful in their ways, as they graduated from the University of Kansas. Her father receiving a political science degree and her mother earning a business degree. However, they both decided to put aside their goals and decided to return back to rural Abilene to help save the McBoyle farm.

“I have greater appreciation for them on that, because I was able to fulfill my dream of becoming a doctor,” McBoyle-Wiesner said. “They never tried to push me in any direction, and the goal of going to medical school was mine. For whatever I was going to go into, it was very life affirming.”

She attended Kansas State Teachers college, now Emporia State Univeristy from 1970-1974.

Marilee started medical school in Kansas City, where she completed 1 1/2 years. She then transferred to Wichita in January 1976, for the last 1 1/2 years of her medical school journey.

After graduating in 1977, she attended a 5-year general surgery residency at St. Francis Hospital, which was under the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita (KUSM-Wichita). This is where McBoyle-Wiesner, became the first woman accepted into the surgery residency.

After her 5 years there, she then went to the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, NM to do a 1-year fellowship in burn and trauma surgery.&nbsp;

Following her time there, McBoyle-Wiesner had the opportunity to return back to Wichita, which she did in the summer of 1983 and became part of the Wichita Surgical Group (now, Wichita Surgical Specialist). 

Marilee was the first ever female to practice in the group.

Call&nbsp;(785) 823-6391&nbsp;or visit today, to make an appointment.<h2>Never being discouraged</h2>Going back to her medical school days, McBoyle-Wiesner said she thought about going into family medicine.“I though surgery was going to be the worst months of my life,” she said.However, she did not let this discourage her as she became fascinated with patients coming in with a problem and surgeons having a thoughtful process of trying to diagnose the issue.“It was a wonderful sequence of events and little by little, I could not believe that I was starting to have a change in heart from thinking this was going to be worst time in my life, to this is kind of fascinating,” McBoyle-Wiesner said.McBoyle-Wiesner said word went around that there has never been a female surgical resident at St. Francis and “forbid that there would ever be one."“That was just the consensus everywhere you went around the hospital,” she said. “I thought well I have a choice, I can take the hearsay from every other place in the hospital or I can go to the Chairman of the Department myself, and prepare to hear it directly from him.”She then went to speak to the Chairman of the Department and told him how much she loved surgery. The Chair told her they would consider in having her apply to the school and she walked away feeling “euphoric.”&nbsp;“What I would tell anybody, is just because the first interview goes well, don’t expect the same thing in the second,” she said.At the time of the second interview, the Chair of Department gave her a series of questions that she was going against the odds.“They were starting to pepper me with questions. Do you know there has never been anybody that has done this? Do you know how lonely it will be for you? Do you know how you will be looked upon? Do you know that patients won’t want to come to you because you are a female? I mean just one after the other,” she said. “So I sat there, listened and told them, I realize patients may not want to come to me and that is fine, that is their right, but for anybody that might want to come to me, I will give them the best care I know to give.”When she officially started her residency, she did not expect the hospital to change how they operated. For example, Marilee said due to St. Francis never having a female resident, meant they did not have a women’s changing room and no call room for female resident surgeons.“I did not make a big deal about some of those things, because I realize I needed all my energy to try to learn what I needed to learn and I could not go around always having a chip on my shoulder, that something maybe was not fair for me,” she said.Throughout her perseverance, McBoyle-Wiesner said she started to see a change around St. Francis. Overtime, she started seeing the hospital implement a call room for women and a women’s changing room. She added, that now when she goes back to St. Francis, she “smiles inwardly.”“I just smile inwardly, because it was progress that was made,” she said. "I think it served me well to realize, this was new for the hospital, but to not expect them to send out an alert that we have to make big changes because Marilee has arrived. No, I arrived, just adapted and little by little I think they saw things that could&nbsp;be better.”Marilee added that she was treated well throughout her residency years. Toward the end of her residency, the Chairman of the Department admired her work. The Chairman asked if she would work for the hospital, but advised she should go away for a year, so she can get the proper training she needs before she returned.This is where she did her 1-year fellowship at UNM and later became Kansas' first female board-certified general surgeon.She married her husband, Tim Wiesner in 1988 and had three sons Tim Jr., Tom and Thaddeus from 1990-1994.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>McBoyle-Wiesner retired from her surgical practice in 2000 with the Wichita Surgical Group, and started teaching medical students.In October 2023, she was&nbsp;<a href="https://kumc.info/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/about/news/news-archive/marilee-mcboyle-m.d.-inducted-into-american-college-of-surgeons-academy-of-master-surgeon-educators%C2%AE.html">inducted as a full member</a>&nbsp;of the American College of Surgeons’ Academy of Master Surgeon Educators®.She retired from teaching at KUSM-Wichita last year in December. The skills lab at KUSM-Wichita officially named their surgical skills lab in her honor.&nbsp;Now retired in Wichita, she still supports future physicians through the Marilee McBoyle Pre-Medical Scholarship and has served on the Emporia State University Alumni Association Board of Directors."I am indebted to the Lord and to so many that have contributed along the way," McBoyle-Wiesner said. "My heart is overflowing with gratitude and for so many that have played a role in my life."<figure>
