Here’s a simple, solid piece of advice for anyone looking to make a purchase of any kind. The two of you should get married, and live in a decent, inexpensive apartment for a while. During that time, you both need to work hard on paying off all your debt. After that, save up an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/saving/quick-guide-to-your-emergency-fund" target="_blank">emergency fund</a>&nbsp;of three to six months of expenses. Then, start setting aside cash for a down payment on a modest home.

When it comes time to buy a home, I recommend a 15-year, fixed rate loan with a down payment of at least 10%. WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell implored&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-health-government-and-politics-pandemics-coronavirus-pandemic-8318e3f406278f3ebf09871128cc91de">unvaccinated Americans</a>&nbsp;Tuesday to take the COVID-19 shot, issuing a stark and grave warning of a repeat of last year’s rising caseloads and shutdowns if people refuse to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

McConnell urged Americans to ignore the “demonstrably bad advice” coming from pundits and others against the vaccines. As cases&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-health-pandemics-coronavirus-pandemic-c053fae3d462705c39e3ffcd612d8a50">skyrocket</a>, he noted that nearly all the new virus hospitalizations in the U.S. are among people who have not been vaccinated.

“If there is anybody out there willing to listen: Get vaccinated,” McConnell, R-Ky., said at his weekly press conference at the Capitol.

“These shots need to get in everybody’s arms as rapidly as possible or we’re going to be back in a situation in the fall that we don’t yearn for — that we went through last year,” he said. “This is not complicated.”

McConnell has been one of the most outspoken members of his party in urging vaccinations to stop the virus spread, speaking often in his home state of Kentucky of the need for people to get the shot.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden tempered his assessment that social media giants are “killing people” by hosting misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines on their platforms, saying Monday that he hoped they would not take it “personally” and instead would act to save lives.

While companies like Facebook defend their practices and say they’re helping people around the world access verified information about the shots, the White House says they haven’t done enough to stop misinformation that has helped slow the pace of new vaccinations in the U.S. to a trickle. It comes as the U.S. sees a rise in virus cases and deaths among those who haven’t gotten a shot, in what officials call an emerging “pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

Speaking at the White House, Biden insisted he meant “precisely what I said”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-business-health-media-social-media-73ca875f1d1c04bc69108607d8499e3c">when he said Friday of the tech giants that “they’re killing people.”</a>&nbsp;But he said the point of his rhetoric was to ramp up pressure on the companies to take action.

“My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally that somehow I’m saying ‘Facebook is killing people,’ that they would do something about the misinformation,” Biden said.

Biden’s comments come as the White House has struggled to counteract resistance to getting a shot, particularly among younger and more Republican demographics. Fewer than 400,000 Americans are getting their first vaccine dose each day — down from a high of more than 2 million per day in April. More than 90 million eligible people have not received a dose.

The administration has increasingly seized on false or misleading information about the safety and efficacy of the vaccines as a driver of that hesitance. It has referenced a study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a nonprofit that studies extremism, that linked a dozen accounts to spreading the majority of vaccine disinformation on Facebook.

“Facebook isn’t killing people. These 12 people are out there giving misinformation, anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it, it’s killing people,” Biden said. “It’s bad information.”

“I’m not trying to hold people accountable. I’m trying to make people look at themselves, look in the mirror,” Biden said, adding, “Think about that misinformation going to your son, your daughter, your relative.”

In the view of the administration, chastising the social media companies — who have come under mounting scrutiny in Washington over not just disinformation, but also antitrust and privacy practices — is a proxy for criticizing the originators of disinformation themselves. To avoid amplifying falsehoods, the White House has generally sought to avoid engaging directly with those spreading misinformation.

Last week, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared misinformation about the vaccines a deadly threat to public health.

“Misinformation poses an imminent and insidious threat to our nation’s health,” Murthy said during remarks Thursday at the White House. “We must confront misinformation as a nation. Lives are depending on it.”

Murthy said technology companies and social media platforms must make meaningful changes to their products and software to reduce the spread of false information while increasing access to authoritative, fact-based sources.

Too often, he said, the platforms are built in ways that encourage the spread of misinformation.

“We are asking them to step up,” Murthy said. “We can’t wait longer for them to take aggressive action.”

Facebook on Friday responded to Biden’s attack, with spokesperson Kevin McAlister saying, “The facts show that Facebook is helping save lives. Period.”

The company also released a blog post saying its internal research showed it was not responsible for Biden’s missed vaccination goal. “The data shows that 85% of Facebook users in the US have been or want to be vaccinated against COVID-19. President Biden’s goal was for 70% of Americans to be vaccinated by July 4. Facebook is not the reason this goal was missed.”

Brendan Nyhan, a professor of government at Dartmouth College who focuses on politics and health care, said Facebook “should absolutely be held accountable for allowing vaccine misinformation to spread.”

“With that said, we should be careful about assuming that the circulation of misinformation online is a cause of hesitancy rather than a consequence,” he added.

“It’s very difficult to show the relationship between misinformation on social media and vaccine hesitancy directly. We don’t have good measures of what people see on social media or any ability to link it to their vaccination behavior. And even if we see correlations in the data, these could be spurious rather than causal — people who aren’t going to get vaccinated are presumably more likely to be exposed to negative and false information about the vaccine.”

That said, Nyhan added that there is some evidence that exposure to misinformation can reduce a person’s intention to vaccinate immediately after viewing the misinformation.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki insisted Monday: “We’re not in a war or battle against Facebook — we’re in a battle with the virus.” But she ramped up pressure on the companies to share information on how many Americans are exposed to misinformation on their platforms and how their secretive and powerful algorithms promote false content to users.

“Do you have access to information from these platforms as to who is receiving misinformation?” she asked. “I don’t think that information has been released. Do you know how the algorithms are working at any of these platforms? I don’t think that information has been released.”

We don’t have good measures of what people see on social media or any ability to link it to their vaccination behavior. And even if we see correlations in the data, these could be spurious rather than causal — people who aren’t going to get vaccinated are presumably more likely to be exposed to negative and false information about the vaccine.”That said, Nyhan added that there is some evidence that exposure to misinformation can reduce a person’s intention to vaccinate immediately after viewing the misinformation.White House press secretary Jen Psaki insisted Monday: “We’re not in a war or battle against Facebook — we’re in a battle with the virus.” But she ramped up pressure on the companies to share information on how many Americans are exposed to misinformation on their platforms and how their secretive and powerful algorithms promote false content to users.“Do you have access to information from these platforms as to who is receiving misinformation?” she asked. “I don’t think that information has been released. The extra money goes into a savings account, and you earn next to nothing on it, even after you finally start to build it up. One of the ways they’re pitching it now is the self-banking concept, where you can use your own money. It’s nothing magical or anything, because with a regular checking account you&nbsp;use your own money.

My advice is to stay away from the company that’s offering it and anything else they have. It’s a really bad product, and it’s a scummy way to sell&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/whole-life-insurance" target="_blank">whole life</a>&nbsp;insurance—which is an awful product to begin with. No one, except for folks in that business, believes in it or talks positively about it anymore.

Being able to borrow your own money? Really? Why on earth would anyone want to borrow their own money? It’s ridiculous!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

My wife and I are Christians, and we own a successful small business in our town. Should businesses tithe?

This is a good question. Giving is never a bad idea unless you do it irresponsibly and to the point of putting your family in financial danger. To the best of my knowledge, the Bible only addresses the topic of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/daves-advice-on-tithing-and-giving" target="_blank">tithing</a>&nbsp;by individuals—not businesses.

Personally, I don’t give a tenth of my business gross or net until I receive my paycheck. When that happens—meaning it’s profit that I’m going to pay taxes on, or it’s salaried income out of my business—I tithe on the profits.

So, I can’t really tell you I’ve found Biblical instruction to give a tenth of your business. Hope this helps!

Too often, he said, the platforms are built to encourage, not counter, the spread of misinformation.

The criticism is not new, and Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other platforms have defended their work to stem the tide of misinformation. In a response to Murthy, Twitter noted that it has removed more than 40,000 pieces of content that violated its COVID-19 misinformation rules.

“We agree with the surgeon general,” Twitter said in a statement. “Tackling health misinformation takes a whole-of-society approach.”

Murthy’s recommendations went beyond tech firms. Teachers, he said, should expand lessons on media literacy and critical thinking. Journalists, he suggested, should work to responsibly debunk health misinformation without inadvertently spreading it further. And public health professionals, he added, should do a better job answering questions and explaining why public health guidelines sometimes change based on new information.

As for everyday Americans, Murthy urged them to verify questionable health information with trusted sources like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and to exercise critical thinking when exposed to unverified claims. If people have loved ones or friends who believe or spread misinformation, he said, it’s best to engage by listening and asking questions rather than by confronting them.

While some groups that push health misinformation do so for profit or other motives, many Americans may be spreading false information without realizing it, according to the advisory.

“Misinformation hasn’t just harmed our physical health — it has also divided our families, friends, and communities,” Murthy wrote in the advisory. “The only way to address health misinformation is to recognize that all of us, in every sector of society, have a responsibility to act.”

The Marcus Lewis Band Kansas City, Mo.

With his legendary trombone skills and a crew of skilled musicians from Kansas City, Marcus Lewis delivers modern jazz for music lovers of all ages at the Smoky Hill River Festival. Notable artists that Lewis has performed with over the years include Aretha Franklin, Prince, Janelle Monáe, and Bruno Mars.

Kyshona (Kuh-SHAUNA) Armstrong, a music therapist gone rogue, has a natural gift for using music to tap into emotion. She began her career working in mental-health hospitals and correctional facilities, writing music with her patients, and using it to redirect behaviors and emotions. Kyshona soon found the need to write music independently, to process her daily experiences with clients. Audiences will find a common thread of overcoming, hope, and empowerment in her songwriting and storytelling, showcasing vocal stylings reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Al Green.

The Hooten Hallers Columbia, Mo.

The Hooten Hallers are a high-energy blues-rock band known for hard-traveling and wild live shows, with a seemingly endless tour schedule. The myriad of influences in their music incorporates elements of rhythm &amp; blues, rock ’n’ roll, honky-tonk, jazz, soul, and punk, with a thematic penchant for the strange and unexplained. Their live shows take listeners on a seamless ride from raucous blues on the lap steel and bass sax, to sweet three-part harmonies to a romping dance number.

Acoustic Eidolon is what happens when you cross a guitar with two necks and a cello with attitude! Colorado musicians Joe Scott on double-neck guitjo and Hannah Alkire on cello, have graced stages throughout the U.S., Australia, Europe, and Canada. Music made by the Kansas-based band Haymakers comes from the

Duke Otherwise is a playful wordsmith, a spirited performer, a skilled guitarist, and a captivating tap dancer. Brandon and Teryn Draper are no strangers to the Smoky Hill River Festival. Smoky Hill River Festival to include variety of performers

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Wichita City Council has put off a decision on a proposed anti-discrimination ordinance, saying it needed more community input even after  two marathon public listening sessions. 

The proposal bans discrimination in employment, housing and businesses. 

About 40 people weighed in Tuesday during the three-hour meeting. Some described how discrimination has impacted their lives and others said that the ordinance would infringe on their religious liberties. 

The discussion focused mainly on sexual orientation and gender identity. The council tentatively agreed to take the proposal up again on Oct. 12.

Creativity is one key to 
building resilience for many youths, and artistic expression helps us to
 convey feelings and emotions that words fail to capture. Art can 
provide us with so many protective factors like creativity, connection, 
and messages that normalize seeking help from others when we feel 
overwhelmed.

As my team at <a href="https://www.ksphq.org/">Kansas Suicide Prevention HQ</a>
 looks back at the wonderful success of the 2021 Youth Art Contest, we 
are overwhelmed by the love, support, and care that these students 
embedded into their works of art. These incredibly talented artists from
 all of Kansas continue to remind us that, though everyone falls at some
 point, there will always be someone there to lift us back up.

Organized in conjunction 
with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas 
Department for Aging and Disability Services, the 2021 Youth Art Contest
 was created with the intention of providing Kansas students a platform 
to showcase their messages, thoughts, and inspirations that help them 
stay healthy and find support when they need it the most.

We were thrilled to receive 29 submissions from 22 different schools (to view submissions, <a href="http://www.ksphq.org/artcontestgallery/">visit the online gallery</a>).
 These pieces are incredibly impactful because they often display the 
type of encouragement that students would wish to receive when they are 
faced with feelings of despair. This contest opened our organization’s 
eyes to even more ways we can reach out into our Kansas communities and 
offer support that resonates with students and their feelings.

Experience tells us that 
what students and young adults say and how they experience the world is 
so much more impactful than the opinions from those who are older; their
 viewpoint is curious, raw and honest.

This year, we were 
thrilled to receive artistic pieces that spanned across many different 
mediums. In addition to the fantastic drawings, sketches and paintings, 
we had a significant number of video and digital submissions.

The use of video allowed 
students to highlight their struggles in a moving and dynamic format. 
For instance, one of the many videos that left a lasting impact featured
 a young student staring blankly at the camera. A voice from off screen 
continually asks this student the same question: “How are you?” The 
student continues to say “Good” repeatedly, despite his face and body 
displaying the exact opposite feeling. This perspective enables all of 
us to adopt a different point of view and realize that many of our daily
 interactions are only “surface-level.”

Videos like this one 
remind us all to be intentional when we check in on friends and loved 
ones. Often, it can be difficult for those who are younger to tell 
others that they are not feeling OK.

These submissions also 
highlight the power of the cultural connections of youth. One’s culture 
can serve as an excellent protective force from thoughts of suicide or 
hopelessness. This contest was filled with submissions from people of 
diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities. A student’s culture can
 help to empower them when they are feeling low and extend compassion 
and care to those who are struggling around them.

Our hope is that the contest this year made more youth and parents aware of their local resources and the availability of the <a href="https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/">National Suicide Prevention Lifeline</a>
 (800-273-8255). People of all ages can call at any time with any 
concern, not just suicide. Our caring volunteer counselors are always 
available to listen and connect.

As we look ahead towards 
future art contests, we are filled with inspiration and excitement. We 
hope for the next Youth Art Contest to be even bigger than the last, 
with more submissions from all over the state of Kansas. Our goal is for
 each community in Kansas to be represented in this showcase and learn 
all about the various mental health resources available in their state.

Additionally, we will 
continue to promote free and accessible programs for Kansas youth to 
produce more digital art in their own styles. When students are 
encouraged to create messages that are meaningful to them, we can see 
the struggles, triumphs and perspectives of those who will become the 
next generation of Kansans.

Thank you to all the 
families who helped to make this year’s art contest such a success. We 
are so amazed with the turnout this year, and we hope that the wonderful
 art pieces encourage even more students to take part in future events.

Youths create messages of love, reassurance to prevent suicide

The results of the recent Pump Up The Volume blood drive are in and the winning station was 99KG!

Radio listeners were challenged to donate during the three-day drive this past week and vote for their favorite participating radio station. 99KG receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

The blood drive came ever so close to making the goal 234, collecting 230 units of blood, according to the American Red Cross' Teri Novotny. Additionally, the blood drive garnered 24 first-time donors and 103 Type-O donors, Novotny noted.

My husband and I are both teachers, and we’re on Baby Step 7. We’re struggling with things where our wills are concerned. Three of our four adult children aren’t being wise with their money, and my husband and I disagree on how to talk to them about it and how it may affect us re-structuring our wills. We don’t want to be judgmental, but at the same time we agree something needs to be said or done.

Let’s say someone is working at my company, and taking my money in the form of a paycheck. Let’s also say this person isn’t doing a good job. If I don’t talk to them about their performance because I don’t want to be seen as judgmental, I’m not doing my job. I owe them the feedback necessary for them to become a good team member. Otherwise, they could just get fired one day without really knowing what happened because I refused to “judge” them.

You’re supposed to judge people. The idea that you’re not supposed to is ridiculous. But you don’t have to be a jerk about it. There’s a big difference between&nbsp;judging&nbsp;people and being&nbsp;judgmental. But it’s unkind not to share insights or suggestions for a better way of life with those you love most. Holding back and telling yourself the way someone behaves is just the way they’re made is wrong in most instances. Overspending and not saving money aren’t character traits—they’re decisions.

They’re adults now, and they’re going to do what they want. They don’t have to understand or support your ways of handling money, but you and your husband have every right to tell them they have to start behaving in certain ways if they expect to receive your money when the time comes. If they’re misbehaving, and you give them money, you’re funding that bad behavior. That’s not love, that’s enabling. And a big pile of money isn’t going to heal the bad things—it’s only going to magnify them.

Sit down with your kids, and have a loving, clear discussion about the situation. Remind them that they’re adults, and you and your husband are no longer able to tell them how they have to live. But let them know in no uncertain terms, gently but firmly, they will not receive your money if they continue to behave in ways you both consider foolish or unreasonable. Let them know they’ll always have your love, just not your money, unless they begin behaving more intelligently and maturely with their finances.

You can’t&nbsp;make&nbsp;them do anything, Danielle. But you can ensure they understand you two won’t be sharing your wealth with people who can’t handle it and use it wisely.

Gill brings raw energy and charisma to his brand of music. Connecting with both radio listeners and fans that come to see him in concert is important to him – regardless of what era or walk of life they come from.

Growing up in Kansas, Jake Gill has fond memories of spending time with his grandfather on the family farm. Listening to music was a huge part of that upbringing – particularly on 1070 AM, the legendary frequency of radio powerhouse KFDI.

“My grandpa was the one that really exposed me to country music,” Gill recalls. “I remember when I was a sixth grader, and he would let me drive the tractor around the farm. We’d hear all the old-time greats like Hank and Willie.”

But, music had already taken a hold in Gill’s imagination long before that. 

“My dad was a music teacher when I was young. I have photos of me in a bean bag chair while listening to whatever he had playing on the record player. My mom tells the story of my dad directing a band concert, and I was standing on her lap directing right along.”

Later in his formative musical years came a man who would become one of his biggest musical influences – Garth Brooks. Gill says that changed everything. 

“Garth was on the edge. There was a bit of controversy with him, because he was so new and so different. He brought the honky tonk bar scene to a larger audience. That was something I had never seen before. He wasn’t just a singer, he was and is a performer.”

Gill brings that raw energy and charisma to his brand new single, “Tailgate Tradition.” Connecting with both radio listeners and fans that come to see him in concert is important to him – regardless of what era or walk of life they come from.

“You can connect with someone and not even know it. It might be through one of your songs, and they may relate to it in a way you never imagined. I like to make a physical connection, through eye contact or pulling them out of the audience and sharing a dance with them – whether it be an 80 year old or a two year old. I think that’s what really drives me as a performer.”

Though Gill admits there is no place he would rather be today, his road to a musical career began relatively later than most. He focused on studies in college, obtaining his degree, and establishing his own chiropractic office in Hutchinson. Gill had done some performing around the area – namely at local churches – but it wasn’t until his early 30s that he considered giving music his all as a career.

Then, an audition for one of America’s biggest television shows cemented his career goals. He recalls that he was still a little unsure of music as a vocation, but trying out for “The Voice” gave him clear focus on his music. 

“After that, I started to think ‘You know what? I can do this.’”

Hard at work on his fourth album, Gill had a hand in either writing or co-writing every song on each of his albums. He said that as a songwriter, he loves telling a story – especially if it is his. 

“I like to write from experience – something I have lived through myself,” he said.

As a performer, Gill qualifies as a “road warrior,” with a full slate of dates on his schedule. He has also worked the stage with such musical heavyweights as Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, and Chris Cagle. But, there’s one performer and stage that stands head and shoulders above them all.

“I won a songwriting contest, and that got me on the main stage at Country Stampede, and I opened up for Jason Aldean,” he recalled, claiming that night made him more confident than ever in his approach to entertaining a crowd. “By far, that was my greatest experience musically. It was very surreal. I still remember being up there.”

Watson’s career is perhaps summed up best by Forbes, who says he’s "one of country music’s biggest DIY success stories."  

For the past 20 years, Watson has achieved success on his own terms, hand-building a lauded career through songwriting, relentless touring and more than a dozen self released albums. His independent Texas spirit and strong work ethic are emblematic of the western lifestyle; virtues which have taken him from humble honky-tonks of Texas to multiple sold-out tours around the world.  

In 2019 he released Red Bandana  — "his most ambitious album yet" (Taste of Country) — whose 20 songs were hailed by The Boot as "a pure expression of his traditional country ethos.”
