KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;There's a pair of new homerun kings atop the Kansas Wesleyan record books.

<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/24/3/14219">Kendall Foster</a>&nbsp;(SR/Prosper, Texs) homered three times on Saturday, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/24/3/13260">Jarrett Gable</a>&nbsp;(SR/Colleyville, Texas) once to set a new KWU single game homerun record as both have 19 on the season as the Coyotes swept Avila 17-3 and 8-1 at the Zarda Multisport Complex.

Saturday's doubleheader sweep completed the series sweep for the Coyotes and left Wesleyan a game ahead of McPherson atop the KCAC standings after Oklahoma Wesleyan took two of three from McPherson in the weekend series.

Foster and Gable passed a pair of KWU players for the homerun mark in Daniel Bolanos and Peyton Deiters (twice) who had 18 in a single season.

Current Coyote&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/24/3/14208">Zack Beatty</a>&nbsp;(JR/Maple Park, Ill.) sits just behind Foster and Gable with 18.

In the seventh the Coyotes put five on the board. Olson brought in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/24/3/13268">Kevin Esquilin-Cruz</a>&nbsp;(SR/Trujilo Alto, Puerto Rico) with a double, Dryburgh had a RBI single, Foster hit a 2-run homer and Gable added a RBI single in the inning.

Wesleyan had 18 hits as Beatty led the way going 4 of 5 with six RBI. Dryburgh and Olson had three hits each.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/24/3/14237">Nathan Righi</a>&nbsp;(JR/Pekin, Ill.) was phenomenal on the mound, going six innings, allowing two runs on only four hits while striking out 14 against no walks.

The Coyotes completed the sweep with an 8-1 win in the second game.

Esquilin-Cruz led off the second with a ground rule double then stole home giving the Coyotes a 3-0 lead.

No one scored until the fifth when Foster hit a solo homer to lead off the inning.

Avila got a run in the bottom of the inning.

Wesleyan blew it open in the sixth with four runs. Kensuke Okada hit a 2-run homer and Foster followed later with another 2-run shot making it 8-1 Coyotes.

Foster had three of KWU's 10 hits. Dryburgh and Okada had two.

KWU baseball sweeps Avila; 2 new HR kings in Coyote record book

KANSAS CITY (AP) —In suburban Detroit, it was a lost 14-year-old looking for directions. In Kansas City, it was a 16-year-old who went to the wrong house to pick up his younger brothers. There was the 12-year-old rummaging around in a yard in small-town Alabama, the 20-year-old woman who found herself in the wrong driveway in upstate New York and the cheerleader who got into the wrong car in Texas.

All of them, and dozens more across America, were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wrong-place-shootings-3c6e5061adb30d889ac3d071893ef129">met by gunfire</a>. Some were injured, some killed.

In a nation where strangers are all too often seen as threats and fear has been politicized, honest mistakes and simple acts like going to the wrong address or car in a parking lot, or even just ringing the wrong doorbell, can seem like a fateful question of trust.

It is a tension not lost on Jae Moyer, who was at a rally at the federal courthouse in Kansas City on Tuesday, demanding a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into the shooting of Ralph Yarl, the Black teenager&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ralph-yarl-shooting-kansas-city-black-teen-154c4e3275732b83bc9f0026a9981b81">shot last week</a>&nbsp;when he went to the door of an elderly white man while looking for his brothers. Yarl, who was shot in the head and arm, is recovering at home.

“I want to be welcoming and inviting to anyone that comes to my home. Even if they are asking for help and I can’t help them I’m going to be kind to them. I think that’s the way everyone should be,” Moyer said.

“But I don’t think that’s the culture we have right now,” Moyer said. “There’s a lot of fear in our country.”

In the early 1970s, surveys showed that about half of America believed most people were trustworthy. By 2020, that number had fallen to less than one-third. Meanwhile, Americans have believed for decades that crime is going up — even in years when it is going down — and also wildly overestimate their chances of being a crime victim.

“Part of that is you guys,” said Warren Eller, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, referring to the media’s relentless focus on crime. “We get 24 hours a day of all the dangers out there.”

That’s hardly surprising. Politicians have long used crime as a wedge issue to gain footholds. Neighborhood message boards foment paranoia about suspicious outsiders. And local and national newscasts bombard TV viewers daily with images of grainy surveillance videos showing a variety of crimes and provocative headlines about cities in decay.

That includes shootings where innocent victims are shot by people who wrongly believe that they are under threat. While there are few statistics on these shootings, they appear to make up a very small percentage of the more than 15,000 people killed every year in the U.S. in firearm homicides.

And yet in just six days in April, four young people across the U.S. were shot — and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kaylin-gillis-wrong-driveway-532de0f3d1fbdcff922fe49f78003976">the woman in New York killed</a>&nbsp;— for being at what someone decided was the wrong place. Just Tuesday, a man&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-cheerleaders-shot-mistaken-location-4b5d0659a3768bc2a46b4756e6a5ee4a">shot and wounded two cheerleaders</a>&nbsp;in a Texas supermarket parking lot after one said she mistakenly got into his car thinking it was her own. One cheerleader was grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene. Her teammate was shot in the leg and back.

This American mistrust has settled in as something that, while not normal, is less surprising than ever. And when mixed with legal confusion, easy access to weapons, poor firearms training and sometimes outright racism, it has produced a string of shootings like these that never seems to end.

Take the legal issues. Shooters in incidents like these often use defenses based on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ralph-yarl-shooting-stand-your-ground-69f91b0a09b25f9758219897f5890278">“stand-your-ground” laws</a>, which have broadened people's rights to defend themselves if they are threatened. But those laws, which have spread across America in the last 25 years, may have actually driven up violence.

A study published in 2022 by the JAMA Network Open, a peer-reviewed medical journal, found that monthly homicide rates increased between 8% and 11% in states with stand-your-ground laws.

“I think it has commonly become known of as a license to use deadly force whenever someone feels threatened,” said Geoffrey Corn, the chair of criminal law at the Texas Tech University School of Law. He has extensively studied such laws, which he believes are deeply misunderstood by the public.

“The fear has to be justified by the circumstances," he said. “You don't get to kill somebody just because you fear them.”

Legal experts expect Andrew Lester, the 84-year-old man who shot Yarl, to claim self-defense and cite Missouri’s stand-your-ground law. On Wednesday, he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ralph-yarl-shooting-updates-c13170d6759f2963b01a68fc8a6332f7">pleaded not guilty</a>&nbsp;in Yarl’s shooting.

Corn, a 22-year-military veteran, also wonders about America’s recent boom in firearm sales and whether it has combined with insufficient training to compound the problem.

“What troubles me isn’t that there are a lot of firearms, it’s that nothing is required of someone who takes on the awesome responsibility" of wielding them, Corn said. Even in states that require firearms training, he says training is often insufficient, with poor explanations of self-defense laws.

When he was in the military, he had weeks of training before he was even allowed to touch a bullet. “I was always conscious of the awesome killing power of a firearm,” he said.

Then there is the unavoidable question of race, a central pillar of American distrust across the centuries.

False notions about threats posed by nonwhite people have played out repeatedly in modern American history, including in a number of high-profile cases when assailants attacked Black or Hispanic people who they believed meant them harm, even when no threat was apparent.

Yarl’s shooting has drawn comparisons to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/trayvon-martin">the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin</a>, 17, a Black teenager visiting his father’s home in a gated Florida community when George Zimmerman, a volunteer neighborhood watchman, decided he looked suspicious and shot him to death. Zimmerman was acquitted after a trial in which his attorneys essentially used the state’s stand-your-ground law as a defense.

It also echoes&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-crime-shootings-michigan-detroit-4495fe92a5c152ab707f74bcc6cb2f04">the case of Renisha McBride</a>, a Black woman who knocked on doors in a Detroit-area community in 2013, seeking help after a car accident. She was fatally shot by a white resident who fired through his screen door, saying he feared she meant him harm.

These cases, said Ibram X. Kendi, the bestselling author of books on racism and founder of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bu.edu/antiracism-center/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwxYOiBhC9ARIsANiEIfYXscTCBySJ0PRmHgZQ1ZOfxEbFn76YeCJGKSX_2J4aB6yMPl-eVP0aAp2PEALw_wcB">Center for Antiracist Research</a>&nbsp;at Boston University, occurred because people of all races and backgrounds are groomed to fear Black people as more prone to criminality and violence.

“No one is born fearing another person because of their skin color,” Kendi said. “There’s so many different ways in which people are taught that Black people are dangerous, and those ideas actually create all sorts of dangers for Black people, including Black teenagers.”

“The more we unlearn that idea and realize that we can’t attach danger to skin color in any way," he said, “the less likely people are going to be to use lethal force against a 16-year-old child who is ringing their doorbell.”

The Friends of the Salina Public Library organization needs your help to find homes for thousands of gently used books.

The group has scheduled a Spring Used Book Sale from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. April 23 in the downstairs Youth Services Annex of the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, Used Book Sale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, science fiction, romance as well as general fiction for adults and children. Additionally, we have hundreds of large print books and movies.”

“And our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill a bag (supplied by Brown’s Shoes) with books for just $5,” added Laura Rhodenbaugh, friends organization treasurer.

Additionally, members of Friends of the Salina Public Library can get into the event early, from 4-6 p.m. Friday.

Salina Public Library cardholders can sign up to become members of the Friends of the Salina Public Library at the adult circulation desk. The cost is $10 a year for an individual membership and $25 a year for a family membership. In addition to getting first dibs on used book sales, friends members do not pay fines on overdue library materials.

The used book sales offered throughout the year ultimately benefit the library and its patrons. The Friends of the Salina Public Library is a volunteer, board-guided organization that acts as a booster club for the library.

Some of the organization's activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and youth activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplies for the CLASS program, and providing scholarships for teen library volunteers, the friends group noted in a news release.

“We are excited to be able to raise funds to assist with Summer Reading Programs at the library,” said Debbie Toll, vice president of the Friends Advisory Board.

Friends of Salina Public Library Used Book Sale opens to public Saturday

Charles Richard Russell 76 of Beloit, Kansas, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather died April 17, 2023. He was born December 31, 1946 to Carl H. and Dorothy A. (Anderson) Russell in the Concordia Hospital, Concordia, Kansas the 9th&nbsp;of 10 children.

He attended Courtland Elementary School and graduated from Courtland High School Class of 1965. He attended Beloit Vo Tech, Beloit, Kansas before being drafted into the Army in May 1967. He served in Fort Still in Oklahoma until he was transferred to Vietnam. He returned home in July 1968. He then went to work for Kansas Bostwick Irrigation District. In addition to that he farmed.

He married his High School sweetheart, Olive June Dunstan in Formoso, Kansas June 5, 1966. They are the parents of Lori, Jodi and Larry.

In later years he joined his wife in retail in Superior, Nebraska and then the two of them worked as sales reps covering the entire state of Nebraska until retiring in Beloit, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, children Lori and Mike Stenson, Courtland, Kansas; Jodi and Adam Mosher, Beloit, Kansas and Larry Russell, Beloit, Kansas; eight grandchildren: Brittany Stenson, Cassidy Stenson, Leslie (Dan) Robinson, Riley Stenson, John (Sabrina) Mosher, Jared Mosher, Jeremy Mosher, Jayden Mosher; five great grandchildren: Khonor Craig, Maverick Mosher, Owen Mosher, Everleigh Mosher and Nash Mosher. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers Beverly Sothers, Courtland, Kansas; Maxine (Jan) Fredrickson, Quinter, Kansas; Penny (Don) True, Council, Grove, Kansas; Kenny (Mary) Russell, Abilene, Kansas; sisters-in-law Verlee Russell, Fort Collins, Colorado; Joanne Russell, Scandia, Kansas; and Kay Russell, Wamego, Kansas; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.

Memorial services held on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at 1 pm from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Brian Faust officiating.

Music was recordings of “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” “I Hope You Dance,” and “Tumbling Tumbleweed.”

Book signing visitation held on April 26, 2023 from 1 pm to 8 pm with the family present from 5-7 to greet friends.

Pallbearers are his grandchildren Brittany Stenson, Cassidy Stenson, Leslie Stenson, Riley Stenson, John Mosher, Jared Mosher, Jeremy Mosher and Jayden Mosher. Honorary Pallbearers are his great grandchildren Khonor Craig, Nash Mosher, Everleigh Mosher, Maverick Mosher, and Owen Mosher.

He attended Beloit Vo Tech, Beloit, Kansas before being drafted into the Army in May 1967. He served in Fort Still in Oklahoma until he was transferred to Vietnam. He returned home in July 1968. He then went to work for Kansas Bostwick Irrigation District. In addition to that he farmed.He married his High School sweetheart, Olive June Dunstan in Formoso, Kansas June 5, 1966. Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - With 2023 marking 125 years since the construction of the Smoky Valley Roller Mills in 1898, this year’s annual Millfest on May 6 is looking to be the best it’s ever been.

Held the first Saturday every May, Millfest is the one time every year that the Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum turns on the antique machinery across the four floors of the mill and opens it up for guided tours.

Lenora Lynam, the museum Executive Director, said it’s a rare sight, especially since the Old Mill is the only working mill using 19th century roller mill technology in the Midwest.

“It’s noisy, the floors rumble, and the machines, gears, and belts spin, rattle, and shake at an unbelievable rate,” she said. “It really must be seen to be believed.”

In this milestone 125th anniversary year, most of the planned events to mark the occasion will be taking place during Millfest.&nbsp;In addition to music, food, and artistic demonstrations there will also be a special anniversary ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on the front porch of the museum.

The ceremony will begin with Soderstrom Elementary School students singing the unofficial “anthem” of Lindsborg – “Kära Lindsborg Mitt Hem” (Dear Lindsborg My Home)

Following will be comments from the museum Board of Directors, a descendant of a historical mill owner, government representatives in attendance, the President of the Smoky Valley Historical Association, and Executive Director Lynam.

There will then be a drawing for a special artwork (donated by the Main Street Galleria and Studio in Lindsborg) from among the guests who take paid for a tour of the mill in action. Closing the ceremony will be the Mayor of Lindsborg reading a special proclamation naming May 6 “Lindsborg Smoky Valley Roller Mills 125th&nbsp;Anniversary Day.”

Of course, the main attraction of the day will be guided tours of the Old Mill in action throughout the open hours of the museum during Millfest – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours costs $10 per person during Millfest, but all other museum attractions will be available by-donation. For safety reasons, tours are restricted to those 13 years old or older.

Music entertainment will be available on the museum front porch starting at 10 a.m. and running through 3 p.m. Folk musician Nile Johnson will perform at 10 a.m. and noon, while local group the Front Porch Pickers will take the porch stage at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. – following the special anniversary ceremony.

Otherwise, guests can enjoy activities throughout the day included in the “by-donation” admission. Starting at 10 a.m., guests can&nbsp;decorate their own Dala Horse – a traditional Swedish symbol and the most notable symbol of Lindsborg&nbsp;– as long as supplies last. Traditional stick-and-hoop races as well as other old-time games will be on the common area lawn of Heritage Square.

A quilt show from the McPherson Quilt Guild will be among the day’s 20 or more free demonstrations, as well as vendors with handmade items for sale – the most ever at Millfest! Watch hand-carving demonstrations, see how rope was traditionally made, talk with representatives of The Land Institute about perennial grains and agriculture, purchase a wide variety of original artwork, and more!

When it’s time for lunch, guests can purchase “smashburgers,” casseroles, soups, and more meal options from Smash N Stuff Grill and Catering out of Hutchinson or pick up a snack or WheatSnax or Dala gummy candy from the museum gift shop.

While in the gift shop, that’s also a great opportunity to pick up a memento of the special milestone day. In addition to the large selection of books, T-shirts, toys, handmade gifts, and souvenirs, the 125th&nbsp;anniversary also brings two special new items.

First, there will be a FREE “Est. 1898” vinyl sticker for each guest during Millfest, with a special 125th&nbsp;anniversary Old Mill design featured! (Available while supplies last.)

Millfest will also mark the first time that anyone will be able to pre-order the Old Mill 125th&nbsp;Anniversary commemorative coffee table book. This will be a full-color paperback book featuring a new narrative of the mill’s history as well as both historic and modern pictures of the mill and surrounding area. Measuring 6” by 9” and printed on high-quality 70-80 pound paper, it will have at least 64 pages and may end up being up to 128 pages in the final design.

William "Bill" Eugene Kagle, Jr. Bill was born to William Eugene Kagle, Sr. and Kathleen June (Snyder) Kagle on October 20th, 1947, in Concordia, KS. He passed away peacefully at Marquis Place, Concordia, on April 20, 2023 at the age of 75.

&nbsp;Bill was a 1965 graduate of Concordia High School. 

After a brief time at Fort Hays State, he was drafted into the U.S. Army November of 1966 at the height of the Vietnam War. Due to an injury, he was honorably discharged November of 1968 with ranking of Sergeant (E-5). As a result of his service, Bill was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Sharpshooter Weapons Qualification Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. 

Upon his discharge, Bill returned to Concordia and had long term employment with Scrivner- Boogaarts. During later years, he drove a mail truck to drop off points for rural carriers. Bill was also hired as extra help by many area farmers and friends. They likely enjoyed his help but more so the laughter and stories he shared.

Bill made friends easily with his infectious warm personality and great sense of humor. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family, fishing and sitting outdoors with a book in hand. He was an avid reader and could discuss many topics. 

Bill suffered the loss and heartache of his son Eli Wade Kagle in August of 2015. His joy was to watch grandson Sean Kagle grow up. 

In July of 2020, Bill suffered a life altering stroke and wanted care to be in Concordia. Marquis Place made this possible from December of 2020 until his passing.

&nbsp;Bill was preceded in death by his son Eli, parents Bill, Sr. and Kathleen, and great-nephew Clayton McGuire.

He is survived by grandson Sean Kagle and mother Tera McClure, both of El Dorado, KS; siblings Patsy Rasmussen (Robert), Cornville, AZ; Janet McKenna (Kenny), Oklahoma City, OK; Laura Hopkins- Cockroft (Richard), Bavaria, KS; Lonnie Kagle, Concordia, KS, along with three generations of nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and Aunt Dorothy Snyder.

The family thanks ALL the staff at Marquis Place for their care and kindness throughout Bill’s medical ups and downs, the Veterans Association of Wichita, KS, for the assistance to obtain all the deserved benefits for his care and Meadowlark Hospice of Clay Center, KS, for their diligence and support during Bill’s final weeks.

&nbsp;Bill’s wishes were to be cremated under arrangements of Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. A private family gathering will take place at a future date.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting on Monday in Topeka have arrest 36-year-old Christopher L. Brown of Topeka, according to Police Lt. Donna Eubanks.

Just after 6:30p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a report of gunshots in the 2300 block of SE Bellview Avenue in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

First responders found 33-year-old Sherman Coleman, Jr. suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he died.

As a result of the investigation, police reported on Thursday they arrested Brown and booked him on requested charges of Murder in the 1st Degree, Criminal possession of a weapon and a Violation of the offender registration act.

Brown has been a registered offender since 2015 for convictions that include attempted aggravated murder, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling and aggravated assault.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

On Tuesday, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit and Shawnee County Drug Task Force served a search warrant in the 100 Block NE Grattan Street related to an ongoing investigation, according to Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.

While conducting the search warrant, officers located methamphetamine, opioids and drug paraphernalia.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes made a bold promise to Chiefs president Mark Donovan at one point last season, knowing full well that the NFL draft would be coming to Kansas City for the first time the last weekend in April.

"I was going to make sure they say 'World Champion Kansas City Chiefs' whenever they announce our pick," Mahomes said, "and I held my word to that, and I don't know it's ever been able to be said in the host city."

Get ready for what could be a long party next Thursday night at Union Station.

The same place where the Chiefs ended their Super Bowl victory parade in February is the site of the draft, and the Chiefs are picking last in the first round after winning their third Lombardi Trophy. So unless they trade up — always possible given their aggressive general manager, Brett Veach — the Chiefs won't be on the clock until the sun has long set.

It remains to be seen who will be left with a first-round grade from Veach by that point.

Second-round pick Skyy Moore had a crucial punt return in the Super Bowl, while seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco led the Chiefs in rushing."We really had to slam dunk this thing from start to finish," Veach said, "and it was one of those years a GM dreams of."Who are the Chiefs dreaming about this year with 10 picks overall?If they address the offensive line with the No. 31 pick, Ohio State's Dawand Jones and Oklahoma's Anton Harrison are possibilities. The Chiefs have done plenty of work on Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers if they go that route. And pass rushers such as Kansas State's Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Notre Dame's Isaiah Foskey could be available there."We always try to stick to best available. It's probably a cookie-cutter line all GMs use," Veach said, before acknowledging: "It does become difficult sometimes when you have certain position groups that are really deep, because you do think, 'Maybe he's a little higher in value but there's depth in that position, so maybe you can get something similar.' So, it's just working the board and really trusting your guys at the end of the day."PICK 'EMWhy are the Chiefs picking 31st if they have the last pick in the first round? The Dolphins had to forfeit their first-round pick for violations of the NFL anti-tampering policy, moving Kansas City up one spot in the draft order.NEEDSThe Chiefs watched JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman leave in free agency, making wide receiver a priority. Two other priorities are defensive end, where the Chiefs released Frank Clark to create salary cap space, and offensive tackle, where starters Orlando Brown Jr. and Andrew Wylie signed elsewhere in free agency.DON'T NEEDQuarterback, of course, but also Mahomes' protectors on the interior offensive line. The Chiefs also are deep at cornerback after loading up in last year's draft and hitting on just about all of the picks.FORWARDING THINKINGTravis Kelce remains the best tight end in the NFL. But he turns 34 in October, and while the Chiefs have a few developmental prospects, they need to start looking for a replacement for the four-time All-Pro.GOING LOCALThe Chiefs would certainly cause a hometown stir by selecting Anudike-Uzomah, who was born in Kansas City and played prep football in the suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri, before becoming a star for Kansas State.
