Vivian Lee (Lomax) Humphrey was born on May 17, 1943 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas, the daughter of John S. Lomax and Donna L. (Wideman) Lomax.

 She died Saturday, October 1, 2022 at the Mitchell County Hospital at the age of 79.

In July, 1964, she was united in marriage with Larry Humphrey. Three sons, Jeff, Greg, and Rick were born to this union.

Vivian worked over 40 years for Fred Jones Manufacturing in Oklahoma City. She loved her many small dogs she had over the years.

She was so proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved the Waconda Lake and found it to be a place she could go and relax.

Vivian was a quiet person and a good listener, and will be missed by so many who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Jeff.

Left to mourn her passing are her sons Greg and wife Janell, and Rick; her sister Georgia Gwen Putman; brother Billie Hugh Lomax and wife Karen; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five nieces; three nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

She has been cremated and she had wished to be buried next to her parents in Prairie Grove Cemetery north of Cawker City. 

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service at Prairie Grove Cemetery at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2022.

haters. It's easy to get swept up in the moment and take risks you might
 otherwise avoid. At BBB, we can't tell you how to vote, but we can tell you how to spot common cybersecurity threats so you don't become a victim of scams.

It can seem like once a candidate or political party gets your email 
address, you hear from them every time you check your inbox. They need 
your help; they want to know your point of view through a poll or 
survey. They urge you to support their efforts and impact the future by

Candidates are persistent because people want to get involved, to be

 sound like an authentic message from a candidate and persuade people to

text. Citizens might receive a message that looks like it came from a

Margaret Ann Darrah Sheets, of McPherson, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas. Margaret, daughter of Andrew J. and Lydia (Prosser) Darrah, was born on July 27, 1929, in the McPherson Hospital and lived her entire life in McPherson, Kansas.

 She attended the McPherson public schools and McPherson College, where she obtained an Associate’s xegree in slementary sducation. She enjoyed her two years of teaching at the Groveland School and one year at Mitchell School.

She was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church.

Margaret met her husband, William J. “Bill” Sheets, in 7th grade, when they both played clarinet in the school band. From then on they were inseparable and married on August 12, 1950, in the Congregational Church, McPherson, Kansas. There were two children born of this marriage, John “Brent,” born January 31, 1952, and Mary Margaret, born March 4, 1954. 

She became a stay-at-home mom, but was also active in PTA, Congregational Sunday School, 20th Century, Progressive Literature, Domestic Art, Chapter EU of PEO, and was a life member of Hospital Auxiliary. Margaret spent several years volunteering at her children’s school as room mother, as well as Den Mother for the Scouts.

A friend asked if she and Bill would open her home for a student of the Experiment in International Living. They agreed and this experience led to an interesting lifelong friendship with a student from Thailand. Wipapan quickly became a much loved member of the family and is still keeping contact with her “American family.” They also hosted another group from Mexico.

Margaret was able to give her mother much attention while Lydia lived at the Friends Inn in downtown McPherson and later when she entered the Cedars Care Home on East Kansas. She went daily to the Cedars to give her mother help and saw the need for such a facility. This led her to become an active member on the Cedars Board where she served for a number of years.

After that, she and Bill enjoyed many traveling experiences and spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She loved her flowers and gardening, her dogs, and spending time with her friends and family. After she lost her eye sight, she loved listening to her audio books and music.

She was able to cope with several health issues, including diabetes and loss of eye sight, which later required she and Bill moving to the Cedars Assisted Living. After Bill's passing she transferred to the Cedars Health Care and she established many friendships with fellow residents while living there.

Margaret passed peacefully under the care of Kindred Hospice at Cedars Health Care, 805 N. Maxwell, McPherson, Kansas.

She is survived by her son Brent and daughter-in-law Debbie Sheets of McPherson, Kansas; her daughter Mary and son-in-law Brad Spilman of Shawnee, Kansas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Kim Veer (Matt) Melville, SK Canada; Timothy “T.J.” Dearing (Lindsay) McPherson, KS; Tommy Dearing (Amie) Maryville, TN; Chad Spilman (Alisa) Littleton, CO; Andy Spilman (Sophia) Blanchard, OK; Allison Wade (Vince) Overland Park, KS; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Garrett and Kendall (Veer), Trace and Teague (Dearing), Jacqueline and Olivia (Dearing), Jake, Braeden, Caleb and Olivia (Spilman), Sam, Addie and Ellla (Spilman), and Lydia (Wade).

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill Sheets, and her sister Mary Jane Ashen-Brenner.

A religious service will be held on Monday, October 10, 2022 at First Christian Church (DOC) in McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating. The family asks that you please join them following the service for a meal at the church.

The family requests donations to First Christian Church (DOC), McPherson or McPherson Humane Society and they can be sent to Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid St., McPherson, Kansas 67460.

Salina Grace seeks volunteers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One week after Kansas City could do little right in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs could seemingly do no wrong in a 41-31 blowout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night.

On offense, Mahomes conjured more improvisational magic in throwing for 249 yards and three touchdowns, including a did-you-see-that jump pass to Clyde Edwards-Helaire during a big first half.

And on the ground, Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco sliced through one of the league's best run defenses to the tune of 189 yards and two more TDs.

On defense, the Chiefs held Leonard Fournette — who dominated them in a Super Bowl triumph in Raymond James Stadium less than two years ago — and the rest of the Tampa Bay running attack to 3 yards total.

"Listen, we stunk it up last week. We all knew that. We admitted it to you. We didn't play the way we should play," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

"The guys cleaned it up, which is important. If this becomes an ongoing issue, then you're not going to win a lot of games. So, it was important that the guys put their foot down and did what they did."

Even the special teams were vastly improved from the previous week, when a fumbled punt return, missed field goal, missed extra point and a series of lousy kickoff returns conspired against Kansas City in what became a 20-17 loss to the Colts.

Tom Brady was forced to throw a lot as the Buccaneers played catch-up, and he finished with 385 yards and three scores without an interception against the Kansas City secondary.

It would help the Chiefs pass defense to get back first-round pick Trent McDuffie, who is eligible to return from injured reserve from his hamstring injury in Week 6 against Buffalo, and linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who served the second game of his four-game suspension on Sunday.

Defensive back L'Jarius Sneed, the fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft, continued to show that he deserves some Pro Bowl consideration. Not only did he lead the Chiefs in tackles, he also had a strip-sack of Brady on a cornerback blitz, and Kansas City scored six plays later to push its lead to 28-10.

Defensive end Frank Clark arrived at training camp slimmed down and with a fresh, positive attitude, yet none of that has produced results.

He never got close to Brady and finished with one tackle, giving him seven through four games.

Sneed came out of the game with a sore ankle and RG Trey Smith hurt his pectoral muscle, though Reid did not seem to think either was serious. There is also hope that Butker will return to kicking next week against Las Vegas.

Chiefs do about-face after Colts letdown in blowout of Bucs

KANSAS CITY (AP) —Sixteen-year-old Adismarys Abreu had been discussing a long-lasting birth control implant with her mother for about a year as a potential solution to increasing menstrual pain.

Then Roe v. Wade was overturned, and Abreu joined the throng of teens rushing to their doctors as states began to ban or severely limit abortion.

“I’m definitely not ready to be pregnant,” said Abreu, who had Nexplanon — a reversible, matchstick-sized contraceptive — implanted in her arm in August. Her home state of Florida&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-florida-government-and-politics-e8bdb85e6736085606ba2661c186a1d5">bans most abortions after 15 weeks</a>, and not having that option is “such a scary thought,” she said.

Experts say&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-supreme-court-decision-854f60302f21c2c35129e58cf8d8a7b0">the U.S. Supreme Court’s June ruling</a>&nbsp;appears to be accelerating a trend of increased birth control use among teens, including long-acting reversible forms like intrauterine devices and implants. Appointments have surged and Planned Parenthood has been flooded with questions as doctors report demand even among teens who aren’t sexually active.

Some patients are especially fearful because the new abortion laws in several states don’t include exceptions for sexual assault.

“Please, I need some birth control in case I get raped,” patients tell Dr. Judith Simms-Cendan, a pediatric-adolescent gynecologist in Miami, where state law does not provide exceptions for rape or incest after 15 weeks.

Simms-Cendan, the president-elect of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, said parents who might have been hesitant in the past now want to discuss birth control.

“It’s a sea change of, ‘I don’t have room to play. We have got to get my child on something,’” she said.

Teens already were shifting to more effective long-acting forms of birth control, which have similar or even lower failure rates than sterilization, said Laura Lindberg, a professor at Rutgers University’s School of Public Health in New Jersey. Her&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590151621000113" target="_blank">research</a>&nbsp;found the number of 15- to 19-year-olds using those methods rose to 15% during the period 2015 to 2019, up from 3% during the 2006 to 2010 period.

No national data is available for the months since Roe was overturned, said Lindberg, who previously worked for nearly two decades at the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights.

But she said “major ripple effects” have to be expected from the loss of abortion access and noted that it wouldn’t be the first time politics have led to a shift in birth control usage.

In the weeks after former President Donald Trump’s election, as women raised concerns online that the Affordable Care Act would be repealed, demand for long-acting birth control rose by nearly 22% across all age groups, according to a 2019&nbsp;<a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2723071" target="_blank">research letter</a>&nbsp;published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

In Ohio, where a judge this month&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-ohio-mike-dewine-government-and-politics-43558a59477f0260f7eec6db33fd30f4">blocked a ban on virtually all abortions</a>, patients — both male and female — now listen with rapt attention to the contraception talk that Dr. Peggy Stager has long made a part of routine appointments at her pediatric practice in Cleveland.

Stager said her practice’s dedicated spots for insertion of the Nexplanon implant are consistently filled, and requests for contraceptive refills have increased 30% to 40% since Roe was overturned. Recently, she talked to a college-bound student who wasn’t sexually active but decided to get an IUD anyway.

“She was real clear: ‘I want to have a great four years without any worry,’” recalled Stager, who is the chair of the section on adolescent health at the American Academy of Pediatrics. “And that’s a change.”

In Missouri, among the first states in the country with a trigger law in effect to ban abortions at any point in pregnancy, Dr. David Eisenberg also has seen a similar sense of urgency from college-bound teens to choose the most effective option.

“Fear is an amazing motivator,” said Eisenberg, an associate professor at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, who performs abortions in neighboring Illinois. “They understand the consequence of a contraceptive failure might mean they become a parent because they might not be able to access an abortion.”

Interest is also high at the contraception clinic that Dr. Elise Berlan oversees in Columbus, Ohio. Before the Supreme Court’s decision, the clinic booked appointments for new patients within a week or two.

Now, they are booking several months out for first appointments, said Berlan, an adolescent medicine specialist who sees mothers and daughters in tears in her exam room. She said the demand is so high they are adding a provider.

On the day the Supreme Court ruled against Roe, twice as many birth control questions as normal poured into Roo, Planned Parenthood’s online chatbot aimed at teens.

Online birth control appointments also skyrocketed that day — up 150% from a typical day, with an even-larger 375% surge for IUD-seekers, said Julia Bennett, director of digital education and learning strategy for Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

By mid-July, several weeks after the ruling, birth control appointments remained up about 20%, although the data isn’t broken down by age group.

The growing interest exists even in states like North Carolina, where abortion remains legal but the Legislature is conservative.

Dr. Kavita Arora, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Chapel Hill, said she saw maybe one teen a month before the ruling. Now, she said, she sees them at each clinic session.

“They’re aware that this is an incredibly fluid situation, and what is allowed at one moment may not be allowed a week or a month later,” said Arora, the chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Committee on Ethics.

That uncertain future is part of what motivated Abreu, the Florida teen, whose implant will prevent pregnancy for up to five years.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with the laws in that time period,” said Abreu, who was using a short-acting form of birth control before switching. “Having this already in my arm, it makes me feel so much safer.”

Her mother, Maribys Lorenzo, said in Spanish that she, too, is a little more at peace knowing her daughter cannot get pregnant and said she would recommend the implant because it does not require her daughter to remember to take a contraceptive pill.

She said she is not worried, any more or less, that her daughter will become sexually active because of the implant. But if it happens, she will be protected, Lorenzo said.

“I don’t think that’s fair to me or my family to not have abortion as an option,” said her daughter, Abreu.

“This survey will give us an outstanding opportunity to hear from a cross-section of our patrons their opinions about our performance, and what they think about a variety of issues,” said Linn Exline, superintendent of schools. “We’ll hear from all geographic parts of the district, people of all different ages, and everyone from newcomers to long-term residents.”

The calling will be done by Market Research Associates, a Kansas City firm, which uses only professional researchers. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential.

In general, calls will be placed between 7 and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates,” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code, because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, an online version of the survey will be available on the district’s website.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden 
addressed the nation Friday afternoon, focusing on uniting the country 
as Florida begins to survey the damage left by a Category 4 hurricane, 
while states further up the coast prepare for the impact from Hurricane 
Ian.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“As you all know, the situation in 
Florida is far more devastating,” Biden said. “We’re just beginning to 
see the scale of that destruction.”&nbsp;

He did not take questions from the 
press or say if he would visit Florida, but he stressed the importance 
of the country coming together to help those affected by the hurricane. 
He mentioned he was in continuous contact with Republican Florida Gov. 
Ron DeSantis, as well as other coastal governors.

“Our hearts go out to all those folks
 whose lives have been absolutely devastated by this storm, America’s 
heart is literally breaking,” Biden said. “I just want the people of 
Florida to know we see what you’re going through, and we’re with you. 
We’re going to do everything we can for you.”

Hurricane Ian demolished Southwest Florida, leaving millions without power and damaging homes, businesses and bridges. On Thursday, <a target="_blank" href="https://floridaphoenix.com/blog/president-biden-approves-florida-disaster-declaration/">Biden declared Florida a major disaster area</a>, approving federal aid to help with local recovery efforts in areas affected by the hurricane.&nbsp;

On Friday he also declared the Commonwealth of Virginia as a major disaster area.

Biden said that Ian is likely to rank
 as the worst hurricane ever to hit&nbsp;Florida. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 is
 considered one of “the strongest and most devastating hurricane on record to hit southern Florida,” according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.noaa.gov/stories/hurricane-andrew-at-30-where-science-has-taken-us">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>.&nbsp;

Hurricane Andrew was a Category 5 hurricane that hit Miami, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/98bf59ecce8dd183a44bfac25ea35aaa">leaving 51 dead</a>. More than 50,000 homes were destroyed and the storm caused $27 billion in damage.

Biden said on Friday that it will take months and years for Florida to recover from Hurricane Ian.&nbsp;

Biden to battered Florida: ‘We’re going to do everything we can for you’

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A man suspected of murder and a police officer were injured during a mid-morning shootout Thursday in downtown Topeka after the suspect led officers on a chase through Kansas' capital city, firing at them as he drove.

Topeka police had sought the suspect over the Thursday morning shooting of two people at a south Topeka home, one of whom died, Chief Bryan Wheeles said. The suspect was hospitalized and in critical condition, under guard and in custody.

The other shooting victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, and a woman riding with the suspect also was hospitalized, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening. The officer was treated at a hospital and released. His injuries were not more serious because the shot hit his protective vest, Wheeles said.

The chase ended in a block of office buildings, about two blocks north and one block east of the Kansas Statehouse.

“This could have been a lot higher count as far as casualties and even fatalities,” Wheeles told reporters during a news conference near where the chase ended.

Police said the suspect's relationship with the person shot to death in south Topeka was “domestic in nature” but did not elaborate. The suspect fled after a police officer spotted his car, and the chase lasted about 4 miles.

Police didn't name the suspect, his passenger, the two shooting victims or the injured officer. Details about the double-shooting, the chase and the downtown shootout weren't immediately released as the Kansas Bureau of Investigation reviewed what happened at the request of local law enforcement agencies.

It also wasn't clear how many officers fired their weapons, though Wheeles said nine Topeka police officers and one local sheriff's officer were on paid leave.

“This was a large scale, chaotic incident,” Wheeles said.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting with a homicide suspect that involved both Topeka and the Shawnee County Sheriff's office.

Early Thursday morning, officers responded to the 3500 block of SW Kerry Avenue in Topeka on a report of a shooting, according to Lt.&nbsp; Manuel Munoz.

Upon arrival, officers located one individual deceased at the scene and one other individual injured.&nbsp;

Topeka Police investigators quickly identified and worked to locate the suspect. The relationship between the suspect and the homicide victim was domestic in nature, according to Munoz.

A Topeka officer observed the suspect vehicle near Topeka’s Hi-Crest Neighborhood. The suspect initiated the pursuit, which ended in downtown Topeka near SW 6 th Avenue and South Kansas Avenue. 

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including SSO. The suspect shot several times at law enforcement officers on scene. Multiple law enforcement officers returned fire. At least one officer was struck by the suspect’s gunfire during this incident. The officer is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are hopeful that Harrison Butker, their big-legged kicker whom they so sorely missed last week in Indianapolis, will be able to play when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Chiefs used journeyman Matt Ammendola the past two weeks in place of Butker, who sprained his plant ankle when he slipped on the shoddy turf in Arizona in Week 1.

But after a solid job in a win over the Chargers, Ammendola missed an early extra point in Indianapolis and then a chip-shot field goal that would have extended the Kansas City lead to seven.

Instead, the Colts seized the momentum and marched downfield for the go-ahead touchdown in the closing seconds, and the margin in the 20-17 loss for Kansas City wound up being that missed field goal with 8:41 left to play.

"Harrison will go ahead and do a little bit today," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday, "and we'll just play it by ear."

The Chiefs are still hedging their bets, though. They waived Ammendola, who had won a five-way kicking competition to be the fill-in guy, and signed former Jaguars kicker Matthew Wright to the practice squad.

He would be promoted to the active roster if Butker remains unavailable.

Wright appeared in three games for Pittsburgh two years ago and 14 games for Jacksonville, where he connected on 21 of 24 field goals and 13 of 15 extra points. The former Central Florida standout's career long is 56 yards.

"I don't know (about Wright) other than his workout out here. I haven't been in a game with him," Reid said. "He had a good workout yesterday and you would hope that transfers in. He does have some experience."

Just not the same level as Butker, who has emerged alongside Baltimore's Justin Tucker as one of the NFL's best kickers.

He has converted 94% of his extra points and 90% of his field-goal tries during five-plus seasons, including a 54-yarder made while nursing a sore ankle against the Cardinals.

And Butker might have the strongest leg in the league, with 21 makes over 50 yards and a career-best of 58 yards, which gives Kansas City a chance to score any time it crosses midfield.

One thing that could factor into the decision to play him: the location of the game.

As of Wednesday, the Chiefs were still due to play Sunday night on the natural grass surface at Tampa Bay, which was getting dumped on courtesy of Hurricane Ian and could be somewhat compromised.

If the NFL decides to move the game, it would be played on the artificial surface inside U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota.

"We're not sure where we're going to play," Reid said, "but wherever we need to go, we'll go. We'll get ourselves ready for that. When the league announces it, we'll move forward in that direction. But right now we know nothing.

"And listen, my heart goes out to the people of Tampa. I haven't quite followed it and know how much it's hit or will hit, but from what I've heard it could be a big one. My heart goes out to them."

NOTES: The Chiefs activated CB Nazeeh Johnson from the practice squad Wednesday. They also signed LB Elijah Lee, who was waived the previous day, to replace him on the practice squad. ... Chiefs hopeful star kicker Harrison Butker can play vs Bucs

WASHINGTON (AP) —A libertarian group in California filed a legal challenge to President Joe Biden’s plan for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/student-loan-forgiveness-biden-plan-d9c8e18774a744187c9af634bf4eb728">student debt cancellation</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday, calling it an illegal overreach that would increase state tax burdens for some Americans who get their debt forgiven.

The lawsuit, believed to be the first targeting Biden’s plan, was filed by the Pacific Legal Foundation, a Sacramento legal advocacy group. It was filed in federal court in Indiana, one of several states that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-education-minnesota-mississippi-ffe9ed18bf0a434970ab09b1d89800e2">plan to tax</a>&nbsp;any student debt canceled by Biden’s plan.

“Congress did not authorize the executive branch to unilaterally cancel student debt,” said Caleb Kruckenberg, an attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation. He said it’s illegal for the executive branch to create the policy “by press release, and without statutory authority.”

The suit’s plaintiff is Frank Garrison, described as a public interest attorney who lives in Indiana and is employed by the libertarian group.

Garrison is on track to get his student debt erased through a separate federal program for public servants. Although most borrowers will need to apply for Biden’s plan, Garrison and many others in that program will automatically get the relief because the Education Department has their income information on file.

Biden’s plan would automatically cancel up to $20,000 of Garrison’s debt, which in turn would trigger an “immediate tax liability” from the state of Indiana, according to the suit. Under the debt forgiveness program he’s enrolled in now, canceled debt cannot be taxed.

“Mr. Garrison and millions of others similarly situated in the six relevant states will receive no additional benefit from the cancellation — just a one-time additional penalty,” the suit argues.

Any student debt forgiven under Biden’s plan would also be subject to state taxes in Arkansas, California, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina and Wisconsin, unless lawmakers in those states change their current laws.

Asked about the suit, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said anyone will be able to opt out of the cancellation. She did not explain how that would work — the White House previously said roughly 8 million Americans would automatically get the debt relief without applying.

“The bottom line is this — no one who does not want debt relief will have to get that debt relief," Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing.

A separate statement from the White House called the lawsuit “baseless,” saying opponents “are trying anything they can to stop this program that will provide needed relief to working families.”

The Pacific Legal Foundation is a legal group that promotes individual liberties and the separation of powers. It was formed in the 1970s by staff members under Ronald Reagan when he was governor of California. The group says it has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court 16 times, prevailing in 14 cases.

Biden’s plan promises to cancel $10,000 in federal student debt for borrowers with incomes of less than $125,000 per year or households making less than $250,000. Those who received federal Pell Grants to attend college would get an additional $10,000 erased.
