Saline County Jail Bookings, March 31

UPDATE: The hearing scheduled on March 31 was continued for the second time. According to court records, Barrioz's next court date is set for April 14.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A woman accused of driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a Hutchinson woman is due back in court Monday afternoon.

Katelyn Elizabeth Barrioz, 24, Wichita, is schedule for a preliminary hearing before Judge Seth Rundle, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In November she was charged with First-Degree Felony Murder, Second-Degree Murder – Reckless, Felony Flee and Elude, Aggravated Burglary, Auto Theft and Criminal Damage to Property, according to Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford.

On October 27, police located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;The vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road in Wichita. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires.

Despite this, the suspect later identified as Barrioz, fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.

The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Tuesday evening, according to online jail records. Police presented their case to the district attorney on Thursday.

Barrioz remains jailed on a bond of $1.2 million.&nbsp;

UPDATED: Military training exercise returns to Salina Regional Airport

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Chamberlain, the handsome hero of the 1960s television series "Dr. Kildare" who found a second career as an award-winning "king of the miniseries," has died. He was 90.

Chamberlain died Saturday night in Waimanalo, Hawaii of complications following a stroke, according to his publicist, Harlan Boll.

“Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us," Martin Rabbett, his lifelong partner, said in a statement. "How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul. Love never dies. And our love is under his wings lifting him to his next great adventure.”

Tall, with classic good looks and romantic style, Chamberlain became an instant favorite with teenage girls as the compassionate physician on the TV series that aired from 1961 to 1966. Photoplay magazine named him most popular male star for three years in a row, from 1963-65.

Not until 2003 did he acknowledge publicly what Hollywood insiders had long known, that he was gay. He made the revelation in his autobiography, "Shattered Love."

The actor became known as "king of the TV miniseries" in 1978 when he landed the starring role in "Centennial," an epic production 24 hours long and based on James Michener's sprawling novel. He followed that in 1980 with "Shogun," another costly, epic miniseries based on James Clavell's period piece about an American visitor to Japan.

He scored his greatest miniseries success in 1983 with another long-form drama, "The Thorn Birds," based on Colleen McCullough's best-seller. He played Father Ralph de Bricassart, a Roman Catholic priest in Australia who falls in love with beautiful Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward). The ABC production, which also starred Barbara Stanwyck, reportedly attracted 100 million viewers.

Chamberlain won Golden Globes for his work in “Shogun" and “The Thorn Birds.” Years earlier, he received one for “Dr. Kildare.”

When the public began to lose interest in miniseries, Chamberlain turned to the theater, where he displayed a fine singing voice. He appeared as Henry Higgins in a 1994 Broadway revival of "My Fair Lady" and as Captain von Trapp in a 1999 revival of "The Sound of Music."

He reprised his role of de Bricassart in the 1996 TV movie "The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years."

He also appeared in numerous films, including "The Music Lovers" (as Tchaikovsky), "The Madwoman of Chaillot," "The Towering Inferno" and "The Three Musketeers" and its sequels.

The "Kildare" series was based on a string of successful 1930s and '40s films that had starred Lew Ayres in the title role.

Chamberlain's hunky, All-American appearance made him an overnight star. Another medical show that debuted the same season, "Ben Casey," also was a smash and made its leading man, the darkly handsome Vince Edwards, a star, too.

The "Ben Casey shirt" became a fashion item, both shows' theme songs made the pop Top 40 (the Kildare song performed by Chamberlain himself) and there was even a pop song called "Dr. Kildare! Dr. Casey! You Are Wanted for Consultation."

But in his book, Chamberlain recounted how he was forced to hide his sexuality. He would escort glamorous actresses to movie premieres and other public events at the request of studio executives and dodge reporters' questions about why he had never married with a stock reply: "Getting married would be great, but I'm awfully busy now."

"When I grew up, being gay, being a sissy or anything like that was verboten," he said in an NBC interview. "I disliked myself intensely and feared this part of myself intensely and had to hide it."

The book also described a troubled childhood and an alcoholic father, and Chamberlain said that writing it finally lifted a heavy emotional burden. He also expressed relief that he was no longer hiding his sexuality.

"I played a cat-and-mouse game with the press. Game over," said Chamberlain, who for years was involved with fellow actor Martin Rabbett.

Born George Richard Chamberlain in Beverly Hills on March 31, 1934, the actor originally studied at Pomona College to be a painter. But after returning from the Army, where he had served as an infantry clerk in the Korean War, Chamberlain decided to try acting.

He studied voice and drama, and after appearing in guest roles in a handful of TV shows and in the 1960 film "The Secret of the Purple Reef," he won the Dr. Kildare role.

When “Dr. Kildare” was canceled he initially found it difficult to shake the image of the handsome young physician.

He moved to England for a time to find work and hone his acting skills. While there, he appeared in three of director Richard Lester’s films, “Petulia” (1968), “The Three Musketeers” (1973) and “The Four Musketeers” (1974). He reunited with Lester in 1989 for “The Return of the Musketeers,” once more playing Aramis.

In 1969, Chamberlain played the title role in “Hamlet” at England’s Birmingham Repertory Company and repeated it in a TV adaptation that appeared on NBC in the United States. He also appeared as Octavius in a film version of “Julius Caesar,” which co-starred Charlton Heston and Jason Robards.

He continued to act well into the 21st century, appearing on such television shows as “Will &amp; Grace,” “The Drew Carey Show” and “Touched by an Angel.”

Bob Thomas, a longtime Associated Press journalist who died in 2014, was the principal writer of this obituary.

FORD COUNTY —The Dodge City Police Department’s Special Operations Division successfully executed a search warrant in the 900 block of Otero on Tuesday, leading to the discovery of a significant marijuana distribution operation and the seizure of a large quantity of illegal drugs and firearms.

The search warrant was executed following an extensive investigation sparked by a tip received via Tip411. The anonymous report alerted authorities to individuals involved in the sale of large quantities of THC vape cartridges. 

Further investigation revealed a juvenile male was not only advertising and distributing THC products but also attempting to sell firearms on a social media platform. 

Authorities arrested two juvenile males and sent them to a juvenile detention facility. They face requested charges including Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Using a Telecommunication Facility to Arrange a Felony Drug Violation, and No Drug Tax Stamp..

During the investigation, detectives recovered over 400 THC vape cartridges, multiple ounces of THC concentrate, raw marijuana, over four pounds of marijuana edibles, a small amount of cocaine, over $1000.00 in cash, and ten firearms, including an AK47 pistol and an SKS rifle.

 The total estimated weight of the THC products seized exceeded 4100 grams. The THC vape cartridges alone have a street value of approximately $14,000.00.&nbsp;

In addition to the juvenile arrests, two adults in the home were also arrested. 39-year-old Sara Myers and 40-year-old Juan Perez Tapia both residents of the house, are facing requsted charges of multiple counts of Aggravated Child Endangerment, Endangerment of a Child, and Contributing to a Child’s Misconduct. 

They were booked into the Ford County Jail and are being held on $100,000 bond.

The investigation remains active, possibly leading to additional arrests and cases being filed with the Ford County Attorney’s Office.

Police alert parents: Juveniles, adults arrested in drug bust

SHAWNEE COUNTY – A Topeka man has been arrested following a residential burglary investigation in Topeka.

Just before 4p.m. March 18, police responded to a&nbsp;reported burglary in the 1200 block of SW Hillsdale Street, according police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

 It was reported someone had damaged property and entered a residence. On March 20, around 5:30 p.m., officers responded to the same residence for the report of a second burglary, property damage and items that had been stolen.

On March 25, 2025, around 10 a.m., officers observed a person matching the description of the suspect in the 4100 block of SW Huntoon Street. The man was later identified as Jeremy Boone Rath, 25, of Topeka.

As a result of the investigation, Rath was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Burglary; Dwelling to commit felony, theft, DV, or sexually motivated crime, Stalking; Reckless Conduct Causing Fear Person/Family, Theft &lt;$1,500 From Building, Criminal damage to property; Without consent value &lt; $1,000 and Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body.

Kan. man accused of stalking, home burglary 

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A man accused in the domestic violence murder of a Wichita woman was in&nbsp;Judge Jeffrey Goering's courtroom on Monday for a bench trial.

Carlos Anderson-Honeycutt, 26, Wichita, was found guilty of the murder of&nbsp; Britnee Wicker, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. 

On November, 19, 2023 police were dispatched to a shooting at a home in the 2300 block of S. Belmont in Wichita, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.&nbsp;

First responders located 24-year-old Brittnee Wicker inside her home with a fatal gunshot wound. She would be pronounced deceased on the scene.

On Tuesday, the Wichita Police Department made significant progress in the investigation into the homicide.

On Monday the Sedgwick County District Attorney was presented with evidence, leading to the charging Anderson-Honeycutt with 1st Degree Murder in the case, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Following a thorough collaborative effort with law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Wichita Police Department discovered that&nbsp;Anderson-Honeycutt was in the State of Texas. Coordinating with partners in Texas, particularly the United States Customs and Border Patrol, an arrest was successfully made near Brownsville, Texas.&nbsp;

On Nov. 15, 2023 authorities booked Anderson-Honeycutt into the Sedgwick County Jail.&nbsp; He is now scheduled for sentencing in May, according to the district attorney's office.

Man captured at the Mexico border guilty of Kan. woman's murder

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest during a house fire.

Just before 7:30a.m. March 24, emergency personnel were dispatched to a fire at a home at 103 S. Eastern Avenue in Hoyt, according to Sheriff Tim Morse. The reporting party stated they could not get any of the occupants of the residence to come to the door to escape the fire located on the porch which spread to the rear of the residence. 

 Jackson County Sheriff Deputies arrived on scene and made forcible entry after attempting to contact any occupants inside.  Law enforcement found the sole occupant Shandra Rose Ahlstedt, 35, of Hoyt and was able to escort her to safety with no injuries. 

 A deputy observed drug paraphernalia inside the residence.  A search warrant for the residence was obtained and executed where crack cocaine, marijuana, THC and multiple items of drug paraphernalia were located.

 The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and caused from a charcoal grill which had blown over in the wind and started the fire. 

Ahlstedt was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kansas woman arrested during house fire

TOPEKA — Senate President Ty Masterson asked lawmakers Wednesday to consider the hypocrisy of those who opposed a constitutional amendment to curtail rising property taxes by limiting increases in property valuations to 4% annually.

Democrats had raised concerns during debate on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/hcr5011/" target="_blank">House Concurrent Resolution 5011</a>&nbsp;that the proposal would offer little or no relief on property tax bills while also complaining that it would lower state property tax collections that support school funding to the tune of $1 billion over five years.

“I hope that the body is absorbing the doublespeak, the hypocrisy of the conversation, the opposition,” Masterson said. “We’re both saying it does nothing, and it’s going to be so devastating we won’t even be able to fund our schools. I hope this is this is apparent to you that those are opposites, and the truth, like many things, is right in the middle. It’s not devastating change, but it’s real change.”

Despite his urging, the Senate failed to muster the two-thirds support needed to pass the resolution, falling one vote short. Five Republicans joined Democrats in opposition on a 26-14 vote.

The Senate vote effectively kills the resolution, although it could be revived by a motion to reconsider, or it could resurface under a different bill name before legislators close the books on the session at the end of the week.

Rep. Adam Smith, a Weskan Republican and the chair of the House Taxation Committee, said he fully expected the resolution to come to the House.

“I was kind of shocked that it didn’t,” Smith said.

He said he wasn’t fully in favor of the proposal but was willing to bring it to the floor for a vote. He was wary of the resolution’s cap on property appraisal increases. The cap, which increased from 3% to 4% during negotiations between the House and Senate, doesn’t do anything to limit the mill levies, he said. Under the proposal, valuation remains lower, but the levies continue to increase.

“You’re average taxpayer isn’t going to see actual tax relief,” Smith said.

During debate in the Senate, Sen. Ethan Corson, D-Fairway, questioned why negotiations between the Senate and House resulted in a change in placing the proposed constitutional amendment before voters in August 2026 instead of November 2025, as previously planned. If the bill offers true property tax relief, Corson wondered, why delay it?

The short answer: Sen. Caryn Tyson doesn’t play Uno.

Tyson, a Parker Republican, said she proposed the change — she didn’t explain why — and the House accepted. Then, she said, the House “asked me if I wanted to play my Uno card of reversal.”

“I don’t play Uno. So we stayed on. We agreed on August ’26,” Tyson said.

Corson said legislators have heard from “Kansans in every corner of the state about the desperate need for property tax relief.” Seniors and veterans are being forced out of their homes “because of sky high property taxes,” he said. And GOP leadership promised before the session that property tax relief would be a day one priority.

Now, he said, the Legislature is at the end of the session, and “we have done nothing meaningful on property tax relief.”

“We are putting politics over what is best for people. That’s what’s happening,” Corson said.

Corson and Sen. Cindy Holscher, an Overland Park Democrat, referenced projections produced by the nonpartisan Kansas Legislative Research Department of how the cap on property appraisals would impact school funding. The state assess 20 mills to finance public schools, and 1.5 mills for school buildings. According to the projections, the state would lose $1 billion in revenue for schools over five years, which would need to be offset by draining the State General Fund.

“Maybe that’s exactly what this body wants,” Holscher said. “Maybe we want to make it more difficult to fund our schools.”

But Tyson reiterated Masterson’s comments.

“We’re getting doublespeak,” Tyson said. “First, it doesn’t do anything for the taxpayers, and then, oh no, it’s going to break school funding and the state SGF. So you can’t have it both ways.”

The five Republicans who joined Democrats to defeat the resolution were Sen. Mike Argabright of Emporia, Sen. Tory Marie Blew of Great Bend, Sen. Brenda Dietrich of Topeka, Sen. Michael Fagg of El Dorado and Sen. Stephen Owens of Hesston.

Saline County Jail Bookings, March 26

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas teen charged as an adult in for a double murder is due back in court Wednesday.

Elias Cerda, 15, will attend a preliminary hearing in Judge Christopher Magana's courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In December, Judge Shawn Elliot charged Cerda with two counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted aggravated robbery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In January 2024, police responded to reports of shots being fired in the area of 5200 E Kensington in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Around the same time, officers were dispatched to an area hospital for the report of two walk-in shooting victims later identified as 14-year-old Emoni Shears and 19-year-old Jhiquez Roberts both of Wichita. They were later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives and patrol officers immediately began investigating this case and following up on leads. Police arrested Cerda, who was 14 at the time. He was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on November 27, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

Kan. boy, charged as an adult, due back in court for double murder

BUTLER COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged sex crimes in Butler County and made seven arrests.

On March 21 and 22, the Butler County Sheriff's Office, Homeland Security Investigations, Andover Police Department, and El Dorado Police Department conducted a joint counter-human trafficking operation to deter human trafficking and commercial sex crimes in Butler County, according to Sheriff Monty Hughey.

Investigators and officers worked with ICTSOS, a local advocacy group providing support to survivors of trafficking. They met with potential victims of trafficking and offered paths to survivorship to ten people who were engaged in commercial sex work during the course of the operation. One suspect was identified as a sex trafficker during this advocacy initiative, located nearby, and arrested for promoting the sale of sexual relations, a felony.

This operation also identified and arrested six men who agreed to purchase sexual relations from a minor child in Butler County. These men have been arrested and booked into the Butler County jail on a variety of felony charges:

Kimron Charvell Burris, 31, has been charged with Aggravated Human Trafficking, Electronic Solicitation of a Child, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Child, and Driving While Suspended.

Shane Anthony Pitman (39) has been charged with Aggravated Human Trafficking, Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Indecent Solicitation of a Child, and Promote Obscenity, distribute obscene material.

Jose Campos-Urrutia (36) has been charged with Aggravated Human Trafficking, Electronic Solicitation of a Child, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Child, and Indecent Solicitation of a Child.

Andrew Jordan Bikar (22) has been charged with Aggravated Human trafficking, Electronic Soliciatation Of a Child, Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of a Child, Indecent Solicitation Of a Child, and Promote Obscenity, distribute obscene material.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy sued his former girlfriend who accused him of attacking her, alleging the woman assaulted him and stole or destroyed more than $150,000 in cash and property.

Worthy filed the lawsuit Monday against Tia Jones in Williamson County, Texas, where the two lived and where Worthy played college football at the University of Texas.

Worthy was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-xavier-worthy-arrested-4d3b3bb4c3608a5be74f2dda420f0044">arrested earlier this month</a>&nbsp;after Jones accused him of assaulting her, but the district attorney declined to file charges in that case after speaking to multiple witnesses.

In his lawsuit, Worthy alleges that Jones fabricated the allegations of abuse and that she became enraged after he asked her to move out of the home they were living in. He says in the lawsuit that Jones assaulted him, ripping out his hair, and destroyed his game room.

He also alleges that while he was in jail, Jones stole a handgun, $30,000 in cash, jewelry, a key to his Rolls Royce and other belongings.

An attorney for Jones, Angelica Cogliano, said Monday she had not seen the lawsuit and declined to comment.

Worthy is seeking between $250,000 and $1 million

“Plaintiff not only suffered bodily injuries and property damage as a result of this incident, but his credibility, veracity, and reputation suffered, and this narrative, although false, will always track his career and future in the NFL,” the suit states.

Worthy was chosen by the Chiefs with the 28th overall pick in last year’s draft after setting the record for the fastest 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. He got off to a quick start by scoring a pair of touchdowns in his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-ravens-nfl-opener-0ea1b2027f61a147d5365bad6a7f6cbb">NFL debut</a>, and after a midseason lull, he became the Chiefs’ go-to wide receiver as they chased an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title.

Worthy finished with 59 catches for 638 yards and six TDs while running 20 times for 104 yards and three more scores.

He was one of the few bright spots for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-eagles-chiefs-score-e2ff209c074a00a6faff39750ff048f8">Chiefs in a 40-22 loss to Philadelphia in the Super Bowl</a>, too. Chiefs wide receiver sues woman who accused him of assault

Derry N. Pentico, age 80, of Concordia, KS, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia, KS surrounded by his family.

He was born on February 26, 1945 in Belleville, KS to Vernie C. &amp; Leora R. (Havel) Pentico

Derry was a 1963 graduate of Agenda High School.

After high school he joined and served in the US Navy from 1963-1967. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.

Derry married Joan Charbonneau on April 3, 1970 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia.

Derry worked as the shop foreman for Western Power Company, later for Beldon Blosser and then Walters Oil before retiring.

He was an active and instrumental member of the Freedom Club in Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #76, VFW Post #588 and the Moose Lodge #1428.

One of Derry’s passions was fireworks, and his neighborhood was known for their great firework shows and displays.

Derry is survived by his wife, Joan, Concordia, KS; a daughter, Kimberly Krager (Jim), Little Rock, AR; son, Brent Pentico, McPherson, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy Pentico and a sister, Dorren Lee.

It was Derry’s wishes to be cremated and memorial services will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, March 28, 2025 at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home with ? officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Concordia Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas with military honors by the US Navy and American Legion Post #76.

Pentico, age 80, of Concordia, KS, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia, KS surrounded by his family.He was born on February 26, 1945 in Belleville, KS to Vernie C. &amp; Leora R. (Havel) PenticoDerry was a 1963 graduate of Agenda High School.After high school he joined and served in the US Navy from 1963-1967.
