PRATT COUNTY—A Pratt man is in custody after a standoff Friday evening in which police said he barricaded himself inside a home and resisted arrest.

Just before 5p.m. September 19, officers responded&nbsp; to a reported disturbance in the 700 block of Champa Street, according to&nbsp;According to the Pratt Police Department. A woman caller identified Jacob Davis, 36, of Pratt, as the suspect and reported there was an active protection-from-abuse order against him.

Police said Davis left the scene in a tan Chevrolet Suburban. A short time later, officers received another report that a vehicle matching that description nearly struck another driver near Champa and Green Street.

By 6 p.m., the reporting party told officers that Davis had driven past her residence honking his horn, and minutes later alleged that he returned and threw mortar-style fireworks toward children in the area. No injuries were reported.

At 6:48 p.m., officers located Davis at his residence at 1002 Champa. Police said he refused commands, retreated into the house and barricaded himself inside after officers used pepper spray to deter two aggressive dogs.

The Pratt County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team was called to assist. After deploying chemical agents and clearing the home’s main floor and attic, officers discovered a crawl space with two tunnels. Davis was ultimately found there and taken into custody after resisting arrest, police said.

He was booked into the Pratt County Jail on requested charges of violating a protection order, assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement and stalking.

No officers or citizens were injured during the incident.

Assault suspect found hiding in crawl space of Kansas home

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man accused of child sex crimes in Wichita made his first court appearance in the case Friday. Gonzalo Ramirez was charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 6a.m. on Sept. 15, police were dispatched to a report of a sexual assault of a minor that occurred in the 1500 block of South Kansas in Wichita, according to a media release.

The investigation revealed that a minor was waiting for the school bus when they were approached by a 31-year-old male suspect, not known to her.&nbsp; The suspect, identified according to Sedgwick County booking records as Gonzalo Ramirez, lured the minor into a vehicle and committed the assault.

Officers quickly located Ramirez who was taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.&nbsp; He remains in custody on a $500,000.00 bond, according to online jail records.

ABILENE - The Eisenhower Foundation’s "I Like Ike" Capital Campaign is well underway, raising funds for a new state-of-the-art Education Center aimed at inspiring future generations through innovative learning and civic engagement.

“We celebrated The Eisenhower Foundation’s 80th anniversary on June 22,” said Emily Miller, Director of Development for the Eisenhower Foundation. “This capital campaign is our way to make sure our organization secures Ike’s legacy for another 80 years.”

The Foundation is at 74% of its $17 million dollar goal, having already received substantial support from the Sunderland Foundation in Overland Park, the Patterson Family Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri, the William T. Kemper Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Anne C. Eagles estate. Additionally, the Foundation’s board of directors has come together to make a collective six-figure donation. 

The State of Kansas has also pledged a $5 million matching grant.

The center will serve both public and K–12 audiences through in-person and online programming. It will feature several dynamic elements, including an Oval Office replica that will offer visitors a tangible connection to Eisenhower’s time in office; a state-of-the-art Immersion Theater that will use four-wall projection to fully engage audiences in historical and educational experiences; and a Global Studio that will enable programs to be broadcast nationally and internationally.

If completed on schedule, the Education Center is set to open in 2026, coinciding with the United States’ 250th birthday.

“Only 45 individuals have held the Office of the President of the United States,” Miller said. “Here in Abilene, we have one of those individuals. This new center will be our birthday gift to America.”

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement including the Drug Enforcement Administration are investigating a suspect for multiple allegations after a drug bust in northeast Kansas.

On September 16, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit conducted multiple narcotics related search warrants in the 400 block of SW Western Avenue and the 1200 block of SW Van Buren Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, three firearms and ammunition were located.

Hayes, 42, of Topeka was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Distribute opiate/opium/narcotic/certain stimulant, Distribute/possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia,&nbsp;Use/possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia, Unlawful to acquire proceeds from drug transactionm Possession of marijuana

DEA helps arrest Kansas man accused of selling illegal drugs

WASHINGTON (AP) — When it was all over,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;couldn’t believe it. “I could barely breathe,” she writes in her new book about learning she had lost the 2024&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/projects/election-results-2024/?office=P">presidential election</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>.

One of her aides peeled “Madame President” off celebratory cupcakes before serving them to crushed staffers. Harris kept asking, “My God, my God, what will happen to our country?”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-donald-trump-election-ddeae9fb378530159201ef4196cba9b3">next morning</a>&nbsp;was no easier. “I was ashamed to realize I was in the denial and bargaining stages of grief, a very long way from acceptance,” she wrote.

It’s one of several raw admissions in Harris’ book, “107 Days,” that is scheduled for release Tuesday. The title refers to the length of the hyperspeed campaign that the former vice president launched against Trump after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-drops-out-2024-election-ddffde72838370032bdcff946cfc2ce6">Joe Biden dropped out</a>&nbsp;of the race.

Although Harris earned a reputation as guarded and circumspect, the book has the tone of someone who is finished biting her tongue. She concedes mistakes, reveals frustrations and details some of the stranger moments from her race.

The book isn’t a winding memoir or a political treatise, and Harris doesn’t disclose any future plans. Instead, it reads like a ticking time bomb, with each chapter counting down to Election Day.

Harris insists in the book that she had no concerns about Biden’s ability to serve as president. “If I believed that, I would have said so.”

“But at eighty-one, Joe got tired,” Harris wrote. “That’s when his age showed in physical and verbal stumbles.”

Harris wrote that Biden’s inner circle “should have realized that any campaign was a bridge too far.” However, “it seemed that the worse things got, the more they pushed him.”

The tenuous situation unraveled when Biden and Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bidentrumppresidentialdebate-0e7577e9a354a69f50675494fea54ca9">faced off</a>&nbsp;with each other. “As soon as he walked onto the debate stage in Atlanta, I could see he wasn’t right,” Harris wrote.

Biden’s team appeared to be in denial. Afterward, they gave Harris talking points that said “JOE BIDEN WON.”

Harris wrote warmly of her partnership with Biden, but there were frosty moments too. As Biden faced calls to drop out of the race, he invited Harris to join him for a Fourth of July celebration at the White House.

First lady Jill Biden pulled Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff aside. “What’s going on?” she asked. “Are you supporting us?”

Later, in private, Emhoff erupted in anger. “They have to ask if we’re loyal?”

Another difficult episode came after Harris had replaced Biden at the top of the ticket and was preparing for her own debate with Trump.

Shortly before she took the stage, Biden called to say he heard from his brother that Harris had been badmouthing him, upsetting some power brokers in Philadelphia. Then he rambled about his own debate performances while Harris was “barely listening.”

“I just couldn’t understand why he would call me, right now, and make it all about himself,” she wrote.

Harris admits some mistakes of her own, particularly a damaging&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harris-stern-view-colbert-60-minutes-daddy-5a2af60ba0b1099e19cca151955c9855">appearance on “The View”</a>&nbsp;talk show. When one of the hosts asked what she would have done differently than Biden during the previous four years, Harris blanked on the talking points she had prepared and simply said, “There is not a thing that comes to mind.”

“I had no idea I’d just pulled the pin on a hand grenade,” Harris writes. Around the studio, “my staff were besides themselves” about how she had just given a “gift to the Trump campaign.”

Harris wrote that she didn’t want to criticize Biden or litigate any of the areas where they disagreed. But she also didn’t understand how much her association with the president was holding back her candidacy.

David Plouffe, a senior adviser, told Harris bluntly that “people hate Joe Biden.”

There’s plenty of grist in the book that could make the next Democratic convention a little more awkward.

Harris wrote that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/pete-buttigieg">Pete Buttigieg</a>, Biden’s transportation secretary and a former mayor from Indiana, was her first choice to be her running mate. He’s also gay, and Harris thought it was “too big of a risk” to pick him while already asking voters to accept a Black woman as president.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was another possibility. But Harris “had a nagging concern that he would be unable to settle for a role as number two and that it would wear on our partnership.”

She ended up going with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-picks-tim-walz-running-mate-a64a91ae84953e880c8d086316d07c54">Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz</a>, but his debate performance against JD Vance left her yelling at the television screen. “You’re not there to make friends with the guy who is attacking your running mate,” she said.

There’s only one reference to California Gov. Gavin Newsom in the book. When Harris reached out to him after Biden ended his reelection campaign, he texted, “Hiking. Will call back,” but he never did.

Harris’ brother-in-law is Tony West, a former top Justice Department official and member of her inner circle of political advisers. While Harris was serving as vice president, West put together what was known as the “Red File,” a collection of plans in case something happened to Biden.

West argued that it would be foolish not to prepare. Harris writes that she “didn’t want to dwell on such an eventuality” and “I left it in his hands.”

He kept refreshing the document as people pressured Biden to drop out, which came in handy when Biden finally pulled the plug on his reelection campaign.

Harris writes that Biden was planning to wait a day before endorsing her as his successor, an idea that horrified her.

“If you want to put me in the strongest position, you have to endorse me now,” she recalled telling him. Harris prevailed, and the endorsement happened shortly after Biden announced that he was done.

Campaigns can be hallucinatory affairs, and this one was full of bizarre moments.

Harris writes that she warmed up for her convention speech with a professional voice coach who “wanted me to stand there and emit animal noises.” A little hesitant, Harris got her entire team to make “hums, grunts and trills” with her.

2nd Kansas teen accused in Labor Day weekend killing

LINDSBORG - On May 15, 2025, Dr. Chienyn Chi, Assistant Professor of English at Bethany College, was invited to speak at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan about her book,&nbsp;Madness, Psychiatry, and Empire in Postcolonial Literature. The event highlighted interdisciplinary scholarship and global academic collaboration which Dr. Chi is integrating into her teaching at Bethany College.

The joint book talk featured a discussion between Dr. Chi and historian Dr. Harry Yi-Jui Wu, Associate Professor in the Cross College Elite Program at National Cheng Kung University. The conversation expanded during a Q&amp;A session, where a psychiatrist, a public health activist, and a film scholar shared their insights. Topics included the history of psychiatry, the political suppression of trauma, and the Western-colonial biases in the scientific study of mental health.

“This discussion was an amazing celebration of interdisciplinary thinking,” Dr. Chi said. “It has inspired me to bring these conversations into my teaching at Bethany College, encouraging students to explore complex topics from multiple perspectives.”

Inspired by her research and its global impact, Dr. Chi incorporates interdisciplinary approaches in Bethany College’s ID 203 course. For example, in the Mythbusters class co-taught with Dr. Gayani Wijegunawardena of the Chemistry Program, students from science and humanities majors collaborate to investigate the myth of sciences and the science of myths.

Looking ahead, Dr. Chi and Dr. Wijegunawardena are excited to offer a new course, “What Would Yoda Do?,” which explores the politics of space colonization and artificial intelligence through science fiction in film and TV, fostering critical thinking and ethical inquiry among students.

WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;Today, Congressman Jimmy Patronis introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives in conjunction with Senator Rick Scott, who filed a similar resolution in the U.S. Senate, to honor the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk.

 The resolution supports the designation of a “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk” on Oct. 14 and recognizes Charlie Kirk for his contributions to civic education and public service.&nbsp;The House adopted H. Res. 719 by a vote of 310-58, with 38 voting present. Kansas Democrat Congresswoman Sharice Davids voted with the majority along with Kansas GOP Representatives.

Gregory Kent Boyett, 78, of Wichita, Kansas, was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on September 18, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Greg was born in Ponca City, OK on February 12, 1947, to Doyess and Barbara (Nickles) Boyett. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1965. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served from 1966-1970, including four tours of duty in the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, he married Gayle Schrader on December 16, 1971. &nbsp;

He started his career working for Conoco in Ponca City and received an educational leave of absence to attend college. Greg and Gayle moved to Stillwater, OK while Greg attended OSU. He graduated in 1978 with a B.S. degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. After graduation, he was employed by Champlin Petroleum in Enid, OK until the company closed in 1984. He was then recruited to NCRA in McPherson, KS. He spent 25 years with NCRA, retiring in 2009 as Electrical Supervisor and Special Projects Engineer.

Greg was a devoted father to his three children, Talisha, Tabitha and Damion and became involved in many of their activities. He was instrumental in founding the McPherson Gymnastics Club and was the first treasurer of the Board of Directors. He was also active with Boy Scouts, enjoying many camping trips with his son.

Greg’s faith was important to him. He was an active member of New Hope Evangelical Church where he faithfully served as an Elder and volunteered his time, talents and expertise. &nbsp;

Outside of work and church, he was happiest tinkering on his computer, traveling, cheering for college football, gathering with family, league bowling, renovation projects, or soaking up the music at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival.

He was known to have an unmatched work ethic. His attention to detail carried into every corner of his life – whether he was wiring a system, crafting something in his woodworking shop, or building a meticulous family genealogy book to preserve history for generations to come.

Known for being a little “grumpy” at times, Greg had a sharp wit and a heart of gold. He was the steady hand his family could always count on, showing up for them in ways big and small. If something needed fixing, building, or just a little stubborn determination – Greg was the one to call. His family was his pride and joy, and though he may have been a bit cantankerous, his love for them ran deep and true.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents Doyess and Barbara Boyett. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 53 years, Gayle, who was the love of his life and partner through all seasons. His children – Talisha Sherry (Jim), Tabitha Lummus (Tony) and Damion Boyett (Shannon). His grandchildren – Dakota Sherry (Ariel Hay), Tyler Lummus (Leanna), Taylor Lummus, Bailey Boyett (Kalib Martin), Sierra Sherry (Luke Ingalls), Trevan Sherry and Brock Boyett. His legacy lives on in his four great- grandchildren, Emerson Lummus, Luka Lummus, Kamilla Martin and Kaillo Martin. He is also survived by his only sibling, his sister, Jennifer Boyett.

The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, Monday, September 22, 2025, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. A celebration of Greg’s life will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at New Hope Evangelical Church located at 501 W. Wickersham Dr., McPherson, KS 67460 with Pastor George Bocox officiating. Burial will follow the service at McPherson Cemetery with full military honors.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a fatal hit-and-run have arrested&nbsp;&nbsp;a 21-year-old suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that took place on Wednesday night in Wichita.

Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the scene of a reported hit-and-run at the intersection of Murdock and Broadway in Wichita, according to a media release.&nbsp; First responders found 57-year-old Daniel Forshey lying in the roadway. Sedgwick County EMS arrived shortly after and pronounced Forshey dead at 9:11 p.m.

The Wichita Police Accident Follow-Up Unit interviewed witnesses and obtained video footage of the suspect vehicle. Initial investigations indicate that Forshey was riding his bicycle eastbound on Murdock when he was struck by a white 2006 Dodge Ram 1500.

After hitting Forshey, the suspect, later identified in the county booking report as 21-year-old Blaine L. Hughes, drove into a Jump Start parking lot before fleeing southbound on Topeka.

In the early morning hours of September 18, patrol officers from the east bureau located the Hughes' truck and took him into custody without incident.

“This was a heartbreaking tragedy. Mr. Forshey was simply riding his bicycle when his life was taken by a driver who chose to flee rather than stop and help,” said Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan. “To the Forshey family, our hearts are with you. To those who think they can run from responsibility: Know this, we will use every resource, every tool, and every piece of technology available to find you. Thanks to video evidence and the relentless work of our officers, we quickly identified the suspect, located him, and placed him in custody. Leaving the scene of an accident is not only unacceptable, it is inexcusable, and you will be held accountable.”

Police arrest suspect for hit-and-run that killed Kan. bicyclist

MISSION, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas sheriff’s deputy was charged Thursday with murder in the death of a jail inmate who sustained broken ribs after his back was kneeled on after he was wheeled from the infirmary to his cell, according to an autopsy report.

Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree said deputy Richard Fatherley has been charged with second-degree murder and an alternative count of involuntary manslaughter in the July 5 death of 50-year-old Charles Adair at the county's detention center in Kansas City, Kansas. Adair had been arrested one day earlier on misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear on multiple traffic violations.

Dupree provided no details on how the man died, but the autopsy said Adair was being removed from his wheelchair when he got into an altercation with jail staff. According to the autopsy, the altercation ended with one officer kneeling on Adair's back. In addition to the rib fractures, Adair also sustained a sternal fracture, the autopsy report said.

While Dupree declined to say whether Fatherley was the one who knelt, he also said no one else would be charged.

The autopsy listed Adair’s manner of death as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jail-death-homicide-kansas-11eb41bc670e83577c0f4f8c9afef3dc">homicide</a>&nbsp;and his cause of death as complications from “mechanical asphyxia,” a condition in which breathing is obstructed. Also contributing to Adair’s death was cardiovascular disease and cirrhosis, the autopsy found.

“Our family is still heartbroken over the loss of my brother,” the man’s brother, Anthony Adair, said in a statement released through the group Justice for Wyandotte. “While we are grateful to see that charges have been filed, it is important for us to be able to see the camera footage of Charles’ final moment.”

The sheriff’s office declined a records request from The Associated Press seeking video of what happened. Asked about video during a news conference, Dupree said that all information in the case would be reviewed by a judge at the preliminary hearing and then would be made available in court.

Fatherley, who was assigned to the detention center but was not a certified law enforcement officer, is on paid administrative leave. He received a summons on Thursday afternoon calling for him to appear in court, but has not been booked into jail. Dupree said that's customary for officers in the county facing charges.

“He was not a flight risk,” Dupree said. “He was, in fact, cooperative with the investigation” and is expected to continue cooperating.

Dupree added that he would file a request for an out-of-county judge to oversee the case “due to the potential conflict of interest.”

Fatherley’s attorney, James Spies, said the second-degree murder charge requires the state to prove that the defendant showed an extreme indifference to life, and, “This case simply does not meet the elements of this crime.”

He noted that the prosecutor’s alternative charge is involuntary manslaughter, which requires proof that a defendant acted with “typical” recklessness.

“We’re going to be pursuing an acquittal in this case,” Spies said. “My client acted reasonably within the scope his employment.”

No charges were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">filed</a>&nbsp;after a similar autopsy finding in the 2021 death of Cedric Lofton, a 17-year-old who became unresponsive while restrained at a Wichita juvenile intake center. In that case, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said the state’s “stand-your-ground” law prevented him from bringing any charges because staff members were protecting themselves.

Spies said Adair's death was “a tragic accident” but was not a result of Fatherley’s actions.

Nikki Richardson, executive director of Justice for Wyandotte, countered that the autopsy report suggested that pressure had been applied to Adair using something called the shoulder pin maneuver.

“It is only supposed to be used when an officer feels their life is in danger,” Richardson said. “It is hard at this point in time with the facts to see where a jail staff or sheriff or officer would feel endangered when a person is leaving the infirmary and they’re in a wheelchair.”

Any conviction on a second-degree murder charge carries a sentence of up to 41 years in prison while a manslaughter conviction carries up to 11 years.

Kansas deputy charged with murder in the death of a man in custody

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a traffic stop arrest in Kansas.

Just before 2a.m. on Tuesday, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black 2003 Chevrolet Trax with an unreadable license plate near SW 11th Street and SW Lincoln Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the driver had a suspended driver’s license and illegal narcotics were located.

Just after 4:30a.m., Frederick L. Sanders, 53, of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Dept. of Corrections on&nbsp; requested charges of Distribute opiate/opium/narcotic/certain stimulant,&nbsp;Possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant, Use/possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia, Driving while license suspended and for the&nbsp;Display of license plate. According to online jail records he met the requirement for bond and was released from custody at 8:41a.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show indefinitely beginning Wednesday after comments that he made about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/charlie-kirk-shooting-suspect-things-to-know-dcde3f792f4d6636d44fb9f4fa53569c">Charlie Kirk's killing</a>&nbsp;led a group of ABC-affiliated stations to say it would not air the show.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jimmy-kimmel">Kimmel, the veteran late-night comic</a>, made several comments about the reaction to Kirk's assassination on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Monday and Tuesday nights, including that “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.”

ABC, which has aired Kimmel's late-night show since 2003, moved swiftly after Nexstar Communications Group said it would pull the show starting Wednesday. Kimmel's comments about Kirk's death “are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse,” said Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division. Nexstar operates 23 ABC affiliates.

There was no immediate comment from Kimmel, whose contract is up in May 2026. ABC's statement did not cite a reason for why his show was preempted.

He also targeted two other late-night hosts, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, and said they should be canceled too, calling them “two total losers.” In July,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stephen-colbert-late-show-cbs-end-8bad9f16f076df62c0ffc50e9c8adbab">after CBS canceled “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,”</a>&nbsp;Trump wrote on his social media platform: “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!” Like Colbert, Kimmel has been consistently been critical of Trump and many of his policies.

In his monologue on Monday, Kimmel said that “we hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

Authorities say Tyler Robinson, 22, who is charged with killing Kirk, grew up in a conservative household in southern Utah but was enmeshed in “leftist ideology.” His parents told investigators he had turned politically left and pro-LGBTQ rights in the last year.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/charlie-kirk-shooting-news#00000199-3e68-d49f-a99f-3fef75fe0000">Utah records</a>&nbsp;show he was registered as a voter, but not affiliated with either political party. He told his transgender partner that he targeted Kirk because he “had enough of his hatred.”

Kimmel's show pulled as audience waited for taping

An audience was lined up outside the theater where “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” tapes when they were told Wednesday’s show was canceled.

“We were just about to walk in — interestingly enough, they waited to pull the plug on this right as the studio audience was about to walk in,” Tommy Williams, a would-be audience member from Jacksonville, Florida, told The Associated Press outside the theater. “They didn’t tell us what had happened. They just said that the show was canceled.”

Williams said he was worried someone had been injured — until he saw that ABC had announced nearly at the same time online that the preemption was indefinite. Williams hadn’t been aware of Kimmel’s comments on Kirk, but sought them out after the announcement.

“They didn’t really seem to justify the means. It seemed to be a bit extreme. And it wasn’t like insulting to, it really had nothing to do with Charlie Kirk at all. He didn’t even mention anything ill about Charlie Kirk — it was about the shooter,” Williams said.

What Kimmel said on his show and reaction to it

Kimmel said that Trump's response to Kirk's death “is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish, OK?” He also said that FBI chief Kash Patel has handled the investigation into the killing “like a kid who didn't read the book, BSing his way through an oral report.”

He returned to the topic on Tuesday night, mocking Vice President JD Vance's performance as guest host for Kirk's podcast.

He said Trump was “fanning the flames” by attacking people on the left. “Which is it, are they a bunch of sissy pickleball players because they're too scared to be hit by tennis balls, or a well-organized deadly team of commandos, because they can't be both of those things.”

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, called Kimmel’s comments on Kirk some of the “sickest conduct possible” in an interview Wednesday morning with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson.

“There are calls for Kimmel to be fired. I think you could certainly see a path forward for suspension over this,” Carr said.

Carr said it appeared to be an “intentional effort” to mislead the public that Charlie Kirk’s assassin was a right-wing Trump supporter.

The conservative group interest group Center for American Rights cited Carr’s comments in lodging a complaint Wednesday against ABC in addition to a prior complaint from early September accusing ABC of political bias. They wrote in the complaint that Kimmel showed a “reckless indifference or willful defiance of facts” and asked the commission to take ABC off air, if ABC did not take Kimmel off air first.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez criticized the administration for “using the weight of government power to suppress lawful expression” in a post on X.

The move comes as the president, his administration and political party have stepped up their effort to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kirk-trump-cancel-culture-assassination-4d69649e382ea46d8dcf794150a1d3c9">police speech about Kirk’s death.</a>&nbsp;Vance earlier this week urged Americans to turn in fellow citizens who mocked the assassination. It is also the latest effort by the administration to use its power to lean on the media. Carr has launched investigations of outlets that have angered Trump and the president has sued numerous media organizations for negative coverage.

CBS said this past summer that it was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stephen-colbert-late-show-cbs-end-8bad9f16f076df62c0ffc50e9c8adbab">canceling Colbert’s show</a>&nbsp;at the end of this season for financial reasons, although some critics have wondered if his stance on Trump played a role. Soon after the cancellation, the FCC approved CBS parent company Paramount's long-pending deal with Skydance. ABC parent company Disney is currently awaiting regulatory approval for ESPN's acquisition of the NFL Network.

Life changes in instances. We live our lives in a comfortable routine, sometimes almost enjoying the mundane. Then in an instant everything changes. An example would be the attempted destruction of America when crazed terrorists killed over 3,000 people by flying planes into buildings. We all changed when that happened. This last week was the 24th anniversary of 9/11, as it is now called. Unfortunately, an event that happened the day before 9/11 changed our lives again.

The assassination of a sitting president, John Kennedy, happened before I can remember. However, I grew up with the impact of that event affecting our culture. Last week the assassination of a prominent figure in our culture, Charlie Kirk, has had an effect similar to the shooting of JFK. The stunned silence at hearing the news has been followed by a mixture of profound sorrow, shocked disbelief, and in some instances despicable glee. This is, of course, not the first time that public figures have been killed by crazed ideologues. This senseless killing though is different in a key area.

I do not spend much time listening to or “following” pod casts. The name of Charlie Kirk was familiar to me, but I had not delved into his message. The last several days I have made up for that lost time. This led me to realize that Kirk was primarily an evangelist who fully lived his faith in Jesus Christ. It is clear that he was assassinated not because of his conservative political thought, but rather he was martyred because of the way he shared his faith. Charlie could not be defeated in arguing about his faith convictions, so those who couldn’t tolerate him calling the darkness in society to repentance, took his life to still his tongue.

The age-old adage is that religion and politics do not mix. In the case of Charlie Kirk and millions of other Christ followers it is about faith, not religion. People with deep-rooted faith have no choice but to follow that faith in every aspect of their life. One of the reasons Charlie Kirk touched so many is that his faith was authentic, transparent, and all encompassing. 

Our forefathers were adamant that we should not have a “state” church. They were however, equally convinced that those who make decisions for policy in our government should be people of faith. Charlie got it right when he bridged the policy gap with an undying conviction about his faith.

The evil that ended that bright shining light actually gave ultimate credence to the message that could not be ignored. Unbridled selfish indulgence may be the face of the deterioration of society, but the truth of ultimate selfishness is that there is no room for God left in that life. The repentance that Charlie Kirk called for is the solution to the darkness that permeates. I encourage you to listen to his words and more importantly listen to the words he quotes when he references the book of truth, the Word of God, the Holy Bible. Those words will never be silenced.

OPINION: Charlie Kirk - a bright shining light

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

Just before 6a.m. on Monday at police were dispatched to a report of a sexual assault of a minor that occurred in the 1500 block of South Kansas, according to a media release.

The investigation revealed that the minor was waiting for the school bus when they were approached by a 31-year-old male suspect, not known to her. The suspect, identified according to Sedgwick County booking records as Gonzalo Ramirez, lured the minor into a vehicle and committed the assault.

Officers quickly located Ramirez who was taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday at around 6:00 pm, a victim reported their vehicle had been stolen from the 900 block of E. Prescott. The victim stated they could not find their vehicle, after they drove to work and were there for about 90 minutes.

 </figure>Salina PostSalina Police arrest a man after he allegedly stole a vehicle East of town.According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday at around 6:00 pm, a victim reported their vehicle had been stolen from the 900 block of E. Prescott. The victim stated they could not find their vehicle, after they drove to work and were there for about 90 minutes.The victim reported their 1998 Toyota Camry had been stolen from the area.That same day at around 7:30 pm, SPD received a call from the Salina Rescue Mission (1716 Summers Rd.) about a man who showed up with a vehicle, which they knew the vehicle did not belong to him. Staff then took the keys from him and the man left scene. Staff also confirmed to police, the vehicle he arrived in was a Toyota Camry.At around 10:30 pm, SPD found a man in the area of S. 9th and Broadway that matched the description staff from the Rescue Mission reported. Officers went to the man and arrested 35-year old Justin Chappell.&nbsp;Chappell was booked into the Saline County Jail and was charged with Felony Theft.SPD stated the victim left the car key on the door handle, key lock. SPD is reminding everyone to make sure in securing your property before leaving it unoccupied.
