After starting their season off right with a 49-36 win over Hesston, the Southeast of Saline girl’s basketball team will return home for a Tuesday tilt with Smoky Valley.

The Lady Vikings exploded out of the gates last week in a 73-39 dismantling of Abilene and will be posed to give the #9 team in Class 3A a real test this evening.

As they did a season ago, Southeast shared the wealth in their season opener, with Brielle Ptacek, Lexi Jacobson, Maddie Harris, Abigail Pearson, and Reagan Goetz all tallying between 8-10 points.

“They did a really good job of spreading the scoring against Hesston and everyone was looking to score,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “I also thought our help-side defense was pretty darn good.”

To take things up a notch against a solid Smoky Valley team, the Lady Trojans will need to continue working together on defense where they turned the Swathers over 17 times on Friday.

“We’d still like to get to the rim a little bit more and we had some defensive miscommunication on Friday,” Smith said. “Those are easy things that we’ll look to clean up from game one to two.”

SES will look to get the better of their foes from down the road for the first time since 2020, after falling to the Vikings in their last two meetings. This year’s matchup may not feature as much play through the paint as it has in years past, with two smaller, quicker lineups set to take the floor on Tuesday.

“Smoky Valley is guard-heavy just like us,” she said. “They’re going to try to push the ball and put on a lot of ball pressure full-court. They really mimic us a lot so we have to get out and make them earn their points.”

With each team looking to pressure the other and find buckets in transition, winning the turnover game will be critical for a pesky Southeast defense, that frustrated opponents all of last year.

“We have to keep everybody in front of us and not always rely on our help defense and we have to score,” Smith said. “We need to shoot the ball pretty well against a team like Smoky Valley and we think they’re turnover prone so we need to keep the pressure on.”

This game will be the latest in a pre-Christmas gauntlet that will include a pair of league opponents in Beloit and Sacred Heart, hungry to wrestle back control of the NCAA after years of Lady Trojan dominance.

“I like having the tougher schedule early in the season,” she said. “Our league is going to be up this year and we don’t have any easy games on our schedule but this prepares us for what we have this season and for things like the Sterling Tournament in January.”

Tip-off between the Lady Trojans and Vikings is set for 6 pm at Southeast of Saline high school with the boy's game to follow at 7:30.

The 2nd-ranked Southeast of Saline boys’ basketball team made a statement on opening night.

The statement was simple, but loud and came in the form of a 56-46 victory over the back-to-back defending state champs, and #1-ranked Hesston Swathers.

From the get-go, the circumstances surrounding this game were strange as a second-quarter power outage during the SES girl’s game forced the action to move to the campus of Kansas Wesleyan in Salina.

Ahead of a huge tip-off, the Trojan coaching staff emphasized the importance of focus, something the veteran-heavy Southeast locker room took to heart.

“I told them before we got on the bus to come over here that the team that can stay locked in would have a huge advantage,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “They knew we had to stay locked in and we did a great job of that. We have a lot of leaders on this team and I didn’t know that, I thought we had one or two but we have more than that.”

Out of the gates, Hesston looked crisp, jumping out to an early seven-point lead before Nakari Morrical-Palmer went to work, closing the gap to one at the quarter break.

“Nakari has that attribute,” Flax said. “He doesn’t have to score 30 to make a huge impact in a game. We talked about 50/50 balls and bench energy and how contagious everything is and I think that proved true tonight. We hit the glass hard and we weren’t perfect but that energy was contagious.”

From there, the Trojans took control of the game and never looked back, leading by six at the half and by 13 going into the final quarter.

When all was said and done, Southeast had held one of the best basketball dynasties in the state to just 46 points, handing the Swathers their fifth loss in their last 75 games.

“A big key to our defensive effort was in how we crashed the glass,” he said. “They didn’t get a lot of second chance opportunities. We got out on the perimeter and made Proctor make plays over the top of us.”

Offensively the Trojans were led by Kayson Lilley with 14 points, as the three-point specialist started his day 4/4 from the floor and 3/3 from beyond the arc.

“We tell Kayson all the time that he has the green light,” Flax said. “With as much attention as Eli and Nakari get there are a lot of eyes on those boys in the paint and they’re all willing passers. Kayson has stepped up in a leadership role this year, he’s been a lot more vocal and he takes that role strongly.”

Southeast will have more opportunities to prove themselves next week when the Trojans host Smoky Valley on Tuesday before hitting the road for Beloit on Friday.

Trojans take down top-ranked Swathers in 56-46 opening night win

Things couldn’t have started much better for the Southeast of Saline girl’s basketball team, who began their season in the win column with a 49-36 victory over Hesston.

Even a second-quarter power outage couldn’t stop the Lady Trojans, who finished their season opener with five different players at or above the eight-point mark in a true team win.

“For an opening night game, I was very satisfied with what we did,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “We had some miscommunication but that’s part of the game. I couldn’t have asked the girls to play any better than we did.”

The Lady Trojans began the night on an 8-0 run and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in a bizarre game that ended 20 miles away from where it began.

With 2:46 remaining in the second quarter, the power in the Southeast gym was knocked out, and both teams braced for a delay that seemed certain to end in a postponement.

However, the unlikely heroes of the day would be the fine folks at Kansas Wesleyan University, who opened and staffed Mabee Arena so that the games could continue.

“This was the easiest ‘yep, we’ll find a way to make it [happen]” that we’ve ever given,” KWU Deputy AD Steve Wilson said in a tweet. “We don’t just talk about community in this county, we live it.”

Off the restart, the Lady Swathers came to life, but a big bucket for the Southeast would stop the run and put the purple and white back in the driver's seat as SES cruised to victory.

Three different players notched double digits as Brielle Ptacek, Abigail Pearson and Reagan Goetz all posted ten-point performances, followed by Lexi Jacobson and Maddie Harris with eight.

“At different points in the game we had different people scoring and we know that’s how our season is going to be,” Smith said. “We don’t need anyone to put up 20 points on any given night but we have 5-6 kids that are all capable of doing that.”

It was also an exceptional night for Abigail Pearson in the paint, who made a massive difference on the defensive end in addition to her ten-point evening.

“Abigail is fearless,” she said. “You can tell her to play anywhere and she’ll go play it. She’s going to play a lot in the post for us this year and she doesn’t care about size.”

Things won’t get easier for the ninth-ranked Lady Trojans, who will take on Smoky Valley at home before traveling to Beloit to open league play next week.

“I like our schedule,” Smith said. “Playing these teams is only going to make us better for the postseason and it gives us a chance to see where we’re at.”

As the wind continues to howl, a number of people in our area are without electricity Friday evening.

At 6:53 p.m., the Salina Regional Airport reported blowing dust and winds at 30 mph with gusts of 43 mph.

According to the Evergy outage map, 1,179 customers in Saline County were without electricity as of 7:30 p.m. Friday, including 692 in Salina.

The other Evergy customers in Saline County are in the southern and southeastern parts of the county.

The outage delayed Southeast of Saline basketball against Hesston, as one of the outages stretches along Kansas Highway 4 from Gypsum Valley Road west to between S. Woodward Road and S. Simpson Road, affecting 62 customers. Both the girls and the boys games have been moved to Kansas Wesleyan University, according to KINA game announcer Devin Hanney.

Another outage, from K-4 at Gypsum south to Roxbury in McPherson County is affecting 323 customers.

A third outage, from just northeast of Gypsum to just northwest of the N. Donmyer Road/E. Stimmel Road intersection is affecting 102 customers.

Customers of DS&amp;O Electric Cooperative also are reporting outages with a total of 297 customers affected in Dickinson, Marion, McPherson, Ottawa, and Saline counties as of 7:42 p.m., according to the DS&amp;O outage map.

UPDATE: Power restored to Salina area; SES basketball moved to KWU

When the 3A boy’s KBCA rankings were released last week, the top of the list caught everyone’s attention.

To the surprise of few, the top spot was given to the defending state champions in Hesston, who have posted an unreal record of 70-4 over the last three seasons.

At #2, a Southeast of Saline team that finished third at state last season, without the aid of a single senior, returning 100% of its scoring for the 2022-23 campaign.

On opening night, these two foes will meet on the campus of Southeast of Saline, for an explosive season opener that has all eyes in the state of Kansas fixed on Gypsum.

The Trojans and Swathers are far from strangers on the court, gridiron, diamond, or otherwise.&nbsp;

Over the years the two have played in a number of thrilling contests, many of which have come in the postseason, where SES and Hesston have taken turns eliminating one another from playoff contention.

As a result, this game means more than your traditional opening round scrap, and with the right to be named the #1 team in Class 3A next week on the line, those who find themselves in Gypsum tonight should be in for a treat.

With both teams looking to knock off the offseason rust, the start to this game will be imperative, and SES will look to their stellar starting five of Drake Augustine, Danny Kejr, Luke Gebhardt, Nakari Morrical-Palmer, and Eli Sawyers to light the fire for the Trojans.

On the flip side of that coin, the Swathers return the lion's share of their scoring from the 2021-22 season and should be primed to make a deep run again this year.

While there is still a ton of basketball ahead, this game will set not only the top spot in next week's KBCA rankings but also the tone for two teams that could very well see each other in postseason play down the road.

Tip-off between the Trojans and Swathers is set for 7 pm at Southeast of Saline high school following the girl’s game at 6:00.

#2 Trojans host #1 Swathers for title of top dog in Class 3A

After claiming the #9 spot in this year’s KBCA preseason rankings, the Southeast of Saline girls’ basketball team will look to start their climb as the Lady Trojans host Hesston to open their season on Friday.

Anticipation is high in the Southeast locker room as the start of the year provides an opportunity to gauge how much progress the team has made over the offseason in live-game situations.

“I think we hit a wall on Wednesday and we’re ready to play to see where we’re at,” Lady Trojan head coach Shauna Smith said. “We’re excited to evaluate ourselves.”

The season opener always brings nerves as players readjust to the bright lights, but this game brings a special energy between two programs that have never shared a league but have managed to find each other time and time again in multiple postseason sports.

“This is definitely another rivalry game,” Smith said. “Last year we set our eyes on this matchup and it’s the same story this year. We’ve got to win this game and we’re expecting it to be competitive.”

As both sides look to settle into a rhythm, the start of this contest will be imperative as each tea looks to knock off the rust of a long offseason.

“The first time these girls score a bucket it really seems like they settle down and get locked in,” she said. “My five upperclassmen have a ton of varsity experience so I’m hoping they can get settled in right away but for everyone, the first game is usually a little rough on both ends.”

Both teams return a great deal of talent from a 2021-22 campaign that saw the Lady Trojans finish 20-4 with a trip to the state tournament, and the Lady Swathers finish 15-7.

While each side will have some holes to fill from graduation, each has the benefit of a long-tenured coach, whose sets and tendencies are already in place.

“Hesston is always going to be well-coached,” Smith said. “They’ve all been in that system for four years and they always bring in a lot of talent.”

In last year’s battle between SES and Hesston, neither side cleared the 41-point mark, and both teams will likely put the emphasis on defense once again as the scoring heats up.

“We always talk about winning loose balls,” she said. “I think that sets the tone for the game and defensively we’ll get better as the season goes on but we need to start strong and get some stops.”

Southeast will also need to focus on securing boards as the Lady Trojans enter the year with another quick, guard-heavy lineup.

“We need to rebound well, that will be a big key for us all season,” Smith said. “Tonight I want all of our girls to attack the rim and look to score aggressively.”

Tip-off between the #9 Lady Trojans and Swathers is set for 6 pm with the boy’s game to follow at 7:30.

UPDATE: Southeast of Saline basketball vs. Hesston moving to KWU

On the heels of a fantastic 22-4 season that saw them take third place at state, the Southeast of Saline boys’ basketball team will return 100% of its scoring and look to run it back in 2022-23.

The Trojans will once again be under the direction of head coach Bryson Flax, who enters his fifth season at the helm for Southeast.

Without any big losses in the offseason, the Trojans should be a force to be reckoned with in Class 3A, returning a familiar starting five that should look like this come tip-off.

SES will also look to the bench for big minutes from Kayson Lilley, Jake Gebhardt, Drew Richardson, and Caden Isaacson.

Ahead of the start of the 2022-23 season, we had a chance to sit down with coach Flax to get his thoughts on this year’s Trojans.

Q: What were your overall thoughts on the 2021-22 campaign?

A: We exceeded external expectations, I think people thought we had a chance to be pretty good and we were but our guys put in a lot of time and effort to be as successful as they were and I was very happy with a third-place finish.

Q: How excited is everyone to get back on the floor and back to playing real games after a long offseason?

A: That’s the key, back to real games. We played about 22 games in the month of June and that was really good for our team but as you go on in practice you get excited to play someone besides yourself. You never know how you’re going to come out and respond to adversity but we’re ready to figure all of that out.

Q: Coming into the year what would you say is the biggest strength of this team?

A: We bring most meaningful parts of our team back and we have a lot of experience. We’ve played in tight games, we’ve played in blowouts, and we’ve played in big tournament games. That’s all so beneficial to those kids to widen their experience and they were really good about taking those challenges on last year.

Q: What are the biggest question marks about this team as we head into the first few weeks?

A: Whenever you get a long postseason run in football season like our guys had a lot of them end up missing some time. As an offensive unit we’re operating a little sluggishly right now and we’re going to rely on guys to play some extended minutes. We need everybody to be locked in and accept their roles which could change as the year goes on.

Q: What are the goals and expectations of this team for this 2022-23 campaign?

A: Externally we could seen as the odds-on favorite to win it all because we bring everyone back but the coach and the competitor in me understands that nobody hands you anything. The goal is the same as last year, we want to put ourselves in the best position to play in a sub-state championship on Saturday. If you’re fortunate enough to make it to Hutch, the environment changes things and anything can happen.”

Southeast will open its season with a colossal matchup on Friday, December 2nd as the 2nd-ranked Trojans host the top-ranked Hesston Swathers, likely for the #1 ranking in Class 3A.

On Tuesday, the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released their preseason rankings for all seven classes of girls' basketball across the state of Kansas, with 70 teams making the initial cut.

KBCA girl's basketball rankings: Preseason

On Tuesday, the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released their preseason rankings for all seven classes of boys' basketball across the state of Kansas, with 70 teams making the initial cut.

Among those 70 teams are three from our area coverage networks, including Abilene in 4A, Southeast of Saline in 3A, and Wabaunsee in Class 2A.

KBCA boy's basketball rankings: Preseason

On the heels of a fantastic 20-4 campaign in which they punched a ticket to the 3A state tournament, the Southeast of Saline girl’s basketball team will look to reload and run it back for the 2022-23 season.

The Lady Trojans will once again be led by head coach Shauna Smith, who enters her seventh year at the helm for SES.

Southeast graduated three seniors over the offseason but returns a majority of its scoring for the coming campaign, and will have a lot of familiar faces in its starting five.

This season, the Lady Trojans will be looking for big minutes from veterans Reagan Goetz, Avery Caselman, Maddie Harris, Brielle Ptacek, and Lexi Jacobson, as well as a pair of sophomores in Adyson Rohr and Emma Zurfluh.

Ahead of the 2022-23 tip-off, we had a chance to sit down with Coach Smith and get her thoughts on the upcoming season.

A: We achieved an undefeated league record and made it to the state tournament, those were two big goals of ours. We achieved a lot of our expectations and we wanted to get past that first-round game but I couldn’t have been happier for our kids.

A: Everybody is excited, you don’t have too much downtime once the season ends but we have a lot of girls who are super thrilled to get back to work. It’s fun to be around it all and our boys are supposed to be really good this year too, it’s fun to do those things together.

A: All five of the kids that we’ll put out there can put the ball on the floor and score. Size will be our disadvantage but we proved last year that we can make up for that in other ways. We’re athletic, we’re quick, and we have a lot of basketball knowledge.

A: We’re still finding our new leadership. We’ve always had Karsyn Schlesener and now that presence is gone. We also still have a huge size disadvantage which changes how we have to guard people sometimes but we’ve proven that we can play with size so that doesn’t scare us, we just know we have to work at it.

A: Our first big goal is to take care of business in our league and beyond that, we really want to get past that first-round game at state. We achieved our goal of making the state tournament last year and these girls have some high expectations for themselves again this year. We know what it takes to get there and we know we have what it takes.

SES will open their season at home on Friday, December 2nd when the Lady Trojans host Hesston in Gypsum.

2022-23 Preseason Profile: SES girl's basketball

ASSARIA - A minor earthquake shook part of southern Saline County early this morning.

A 2.6 magnitude quake struck at 5:35 a.m. Tuesday southeast of Assaria, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered just northwest of the S. Holmes Road/E. Hedberg Road intersection.

Small earthquake shakes part of southern Saline County Tuesday

Greater Salina Community Foundation

The Greater Salina Community Foundation recently awarded more than $47,000 to nine charitable projects and organizations in Saline County.

 The following organizations received funding:

• St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, $9,930 to be used to purchase supplies for multiple learning centers and to create a safe and welcoming entrance to St. John’s Kid Kare.

• Ashby House, $10,000 to be used to repair the Bridge to Sober Living apartment complex outdoor play area by repairing the existing concrete and build and install a new fence, benches, and shade structures above the benches.

• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, $5,000 to support volunteer recruitment and match support through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Community Based Program.

• Little Samaritans Child Development Center, Inc., $2,589.40 to help purchase six child-size chairs, a 30” x 72” table and a copy machine.

• USD 305, $2,700 to help bring storyteller, Laura Packer, to lead workshops to teach students the process and impact of storytelling.

• Gypsum Summer Youth Program, $7,000 towards bus transportation to support visits to zoos, museums and other education programs and recreational activities.

• USD 306 Southeast of Saline, $2,478 to purchase an Omtech 50w laser and 120w air purifier.

• USD 306 Southeast of Saline, $2,000 to acquire The District Eat and Play as the venue for After Prom 2023.

• People In Need, $6,000 to provide support for rent.

This round of grants was made possible by five funds at the community foundation: the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which supports projects and programs that improve the community’s quality of life; the Kansas Health Foundation Fund, which supports the public health of Saline County; the Fund for Greater Salina which supports funds used for a variety of charitable causes that positively impact the community; the Fund for Early Childhood Care, Education and Development, which furthers the care, education, development, health, safety and human service needs of children ages 0-6 to better prepare them for kindergarten; and the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund, which supports hands-on learning opportunities for youth in the areas of arts and humanities and science, technology and invention.
