Friday’s matchup between 6-0 Southeast of Saline and 0-7 Minneapolis went about as you would expect, with the second-ranked Trojans bulldozing the Lions 69-27.

The Trojans finished the contest with three different players in double digits, led by 17 from Nakari Morrical-Palmer, 14 from Eli Sawyers, and 10 from Drake Augustine.

Southeast also strung together three 10-0 runs, playing immaculate defense throughout the contest.

“I wasn’t extremely thrilled about the first half,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We got a little sluggish and we were kind of just okay with where we were but how much can you really get on them when they only give up 12 points in the first half?”

Out of the break, SES continued to dominate in transition, beginning the half with a 10-0 run en route to forcing a total of 25 turnovers throughout the game.

With the result already secured, the Trojans used the rest of the game to work on set plays and try new things offensively, leading to assisted scores in bunches.

“It’s good to see some of these things live because when we run our stuff in practice everybody knows our plays,” Flax said. “I thought the guys shared the ball pretty well, there wasn’t a lot of 1-on-1, we had a lot of assisted buckets and that was good to see.”

With just one game to go ahead of the Sterling Tournament, SES will turn their attention to the Tigers of Clay Center in a Tuesday tilt, looking to head to Sterling with their undefeated record still intact.

“Clay Center has a better roster than their record, we’re expecting their best shot but we’ll get after it in our preparation and get ready to go.”

Trojans trounce Lions en route to seventh-straight victory

One of the most unthinkable streaks in the state of Kansas came to an end on Friday night as the Southeast of Saline girl’s basketball team fell to Minneapolis, dropping their first league game since January 2020.

The streak, which stood at 28 straight league wins, will go down as one of, if not the most dominant stretch in NCAA history, but will do little to ease the sting of a 47-41 loss on the Lady Trojans’ home floor.

“Rebounding played a role but they outplayed us in every aspect of the game for about 32 minutes,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “They outhustled us, they won loose balls and they won rebounds where we didn’t.”

While the rebounding margin as a whole was big for the Lady Lions, it was on the offensive glass where Southeast got outworked the hardest, with a margin of 17-3 by the final whistle.

The teams traded two-point leads at the end of the first two quarters, but early foul trouble left the Lady Trojans a bit hesitant out of the break, and with fewer transition buckets, SES was outscored 10-4 in the third.

“In the first half, we had to play a little differently defensively and we had a lot of miscommunication which led them to some easy buckets. At the end of the day we just didn’t go rebound.”

A pair of small runs allowed the Trojans to get back into the game in the fourth, cutting the lead down to as little as a point, but Minneapolis put the game away at the free throw line, where they outscored the SES by ten, and took 25 attempts to Southeast’s six.

“Offensively we made some cuts early on but we didn’t really get into a flow on that end. When you take it to the basket you’re going to get bumped and we didn’t convert on those.”

Maci McClure was the only player on either side in double figures, tallying 14 for the Lady Lions, while SES was led in scoring by Brielle Ptacek who converted three triples for nine points.

Next up for Southeast of Saline will be a Tuesday trip to Clay Center before the Sterling Tournament gets underway on January 16th.

ASSARIA - A small earthquake shook part of southern Saline County Thursday evening.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.2 magnitude quake struck southeast of Assaria at 7:29 p.m. Thursday. It was centered just north-northwest of the S. Holmes Road/E. Hedberg Road intersection.

Minor earthquake strikes southeast of Assaria Thursday night

With a third of their season in the books the Southeast of Saline boys' basketball team, currently ranked #2 in Class 3A, will return to the purple palace to ring in the new year with a league matchup against Minneapolis on Friday night.

Despite facing three ranked teams, including two preseason #1’s, the Trojans have looked dominant thus far, outscoring their first six opponents by 125 points.

“I thought we rebounded really well throughout this first stretch,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “For the most part, we stuck to defensive gameplans and executed well, and then we were really successful in transition. I was pleasantly surprised with our efficiency in the half-court and we looked a lot better early than we did last season.”

Despite boasting one of the most stacked resume’s in the state of Kansas and posting a perfect 6-0 record heading into the break, SES was demoted to #2 in the final KBCA rankings of 2022, which bothered many in Gypsum, but far fewer in the Trojan locker room.

“We take rankings with a grain of salt depending on the week,” Flax said. “I don’t think this bothered or lit a fire under anybody, our goals don’t change, we want to be #1 at the end not in January.”

With their focus still intact, the Trojans will turn their attention to another league foe in Minneapolis, who has struggled mightily this season and will limp into this contest at 0-7.

Despite this game coming against the lowly Lions, SES must remain vigilant, especially as they knock off the stagnation of the winter break and settle back into their rhythm.

“We can’t look past an opponent like this,” he said. “They can shoot the ball and they hung with Sacred Heart this week. We’ll have a little rust getting back into a flow and back into game shape but we are who we are and we just need to make sure we’re executing to the best of our abilities.”

While Minneapolis has had a hard time keeping their opponents off the board this season, they have, at times, shown a prowess for putting points on it, dropping as many as 72 in a narrow loss to Ell-Saline earlier this year.

“They have some young talent that can shoot the basketball if they’re open,” Flax said. “Defensively they’re going to try to zone us and that can be a challenge. We tried to simplify our zone offense over the break so we’re not waiting around as much. We’re going to have to guard and prevent them from getting second-chance opportunities.”

Tip-off between the Trojans and Lions is scheduled for 7 pm at Southeast of Saline high school following the girl's game at 6:30.

Second-ranked Trojans host Minneapolis to ring in 2023

With 2022 in the rearview the Southeast of Saline girls’ basketball team will carry their undefeated record and #5 ranking into the new year as the Lady Trojans prepare to host 5-1 Minneapolis on Friday night.

While SES has dominated the NCAA recently, this game could serve as another true test, as the Lady Lions have outscored their first six opponents by over 100 points.

Southeast hasn’t been far off that mark in point differential and will look to continue playing their physical, scrappy brand of basketball down the home stretch.

“Our toughness has really stood out to me this year,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “As you go back and look at the games that we’ve played we’ve been in a lot of close ones but I think that our toughness has been something that has been present in every game.”

While the Lady Trojans have been good, every team is still in search of ways to improve, and for SES, that means finding ways to make their already versatile offense that much more formidable.

“We worked on keeping the floor spread out and moving the ball a little more consistently over break,” Smith said. “We want to give ourselves some more options with our five guards on the floor all having opportunities to take it to the basket.”

With the Lady Lions fixed in their sights, Southeast will take aim at one of the few potential challengers to their league throne, and a team that in a lot of ways, resembles a younger SES squad.

“They’re clones of us,” she said. “They don’t really have a true post, they’re fast, they like to get up and down the floor and they’re going to pressure the ball with good defense.”

To mitigate the Minn attack, the Lady Trojans will have to account for key playmakers like Maci McClure and Maggie Shupe, while ensuring they keep an eye on a roster loaded with role players primed to go off in any given contest.

“We have to make sure that we talk and that we stay in communication consistently on every possession defensively,” Smith said. “On the other side, we have to put the ball in the bucket and not feel like we have to try to force things right away out of their press.”

Tip-off between the Lady Trojans and Lions is set for 6:30 at Southeast of Saline High School with the boys' game to follow at 7:00.

 </figure>With 2022 in the rearview the Southeast of Saline girls’ basketball team will carry their undefeated record and #5 ranking into the new year as the Lady Trojans prepare to host 5-1 Minneapolis on Friday night.While SES has dominated the NCAA recently, this game could serve as another true test, as the Lady Lions have outscored their first six opponents by over 100 points.Southeast hasn’t been far off that mark in point differential and will look to continue playing their physical, scrappy brand of basketball down the home stretch.“Our toughness has really stood out to me this year,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “As you go back and look at the games that we’ve played we’ve been in a lot of close ones but I think that our toughness has been something that has been present in every game.”While the Lady Trojans have been good, every team is still in search of ways to improve, and for SES, that means finding ways to make their already versatile offense that much more formidable.“We worked on keeping the floor spread out and moving the ball a little more consistently over break,” Smith said. “We want to give ourselves some more options with our five guards on the floor all having opportunities to take it to the basket.”With the Lady Lions fixed in their sights, Southeast will take aim at one of the few potential challengers to their league throne, and a team that in a lot of ways, resembles a younger SES squad.“They’re clones of us,” she said. “They don’t really have a true post, they’re fast, they like to get up and down the floor and they’re going to pressure the ball with good defense.”To mitigate the Minn attack, the Lady Trojans will have to account for key playmakers like Maci McClure and Maggie Shupe, while ensuring they keep an eye on a roster loaded with role players primed to go off in any given contest.“We have to make sure that we talk and that we stay in communication consistently on every possession defensively,” Smith said. “On the other side, we have to put the ball in the bucket and not feel like we have to try to force things right away out of their press.”Tip-off between the Lady Trojans and Lions is set for 6:30 at Southeast of Saline High School with the boys' game to follow at 7:00.As always the game can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM) or streamed live on the Salina Post.

A minor earthquake struck east-southeast of Salina Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.0 magnitude quake struck at 3:24 p.m. Wesnesday. The quake was centered just east of S. Whitmore Road between E. Water Well Road and E. Schilling Road.

KBCA girl's basketball rankings: Week three

If anyone plans to take down the top-ranked Southeast of Saline boys’ basketball team, it will have to wait until next year.

The Trojans steamrolled their way through the December portion of their schedule, eliminating three ranked teams including two preseason #1’s en route to a 6-0 record to carry into the new year.

That train didn’t stop in Salina on Monday night as Southeast cruised past their biggest rival in Sacred Heart with a convincing 65-41 victory over the then 4-1 Knights, despite a great 12-point performance from Michael Matteucci.

“We settled in and were pretty good overall even though we weren’t great defensively,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “Credit Michael Matteucci, he’s a great player and I told him after the game he’s the most in-shape kid that we’ve faced this year. We tried to wear him out and just couldn’t.”

One area of defensive emphasis for the Trojans in this matchup was in their protection of the rim, where Eli Sawyers and Nakari Morrical-Palmer threw a block party, taking away points in bunches in the paint.

“We were doing a good job of contesting shots,” Flax said. “We thrive in pace and to a degree in chaos. We knew Sacred Heart was going to make some things up on us defensively but once we got into our rhythm we’re really tough to keep up with.”

The Trojans were led in scoring by a 22-point masterclass by Eli Sawyers, who dominated inside, collecting 20 of his points without the aid of a single three or free throw.

Southeast of Saline will resume their season on Friday, January 6th when they return to Gypsum to square off with another league foe in Minneapolis.

Top-ranked Trojans take down Knights to lock up 6-0 start

The Southeast of Saline girls’ basketball team would not be denied in the 2022 portion of their season, and closed out the calendar year strong on Monday with a 51-45 victory in Salina over Sacred Heart.

With this win over the rival Lady Knights, SES moves to 6-0 on the season and has now won an absurd 28 straight league matchups against NCAA opponents.

Things weren’t always easy for the Lady Trojans, who led by just four at the intermission, but kept the hot-shooting Knights at bay long enough to hold on for a six-point victory.

“A win is a win,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “They shot the ball really well and we scored 51 points but they battled and I didn’t expect anything less from them.”

Both teams had three different scorers in double digits, as Sacred Heart’s Skylar Douglas, Katie Weiss, and Tessa Junk dropped 14, 13, and 12 respectively in a hard-fought loss.

The Lady Knights are the first team all season with multiple double-digit scorers against SES, but the Lady Trojans had their own double-digit trio in Reagan Goetz (13), Lexi Jacobson (11), and Maddie Harris (10).

“Offensively we’ve done a good job of spreading it out and moving without the ball,” Smith said. “We have to keep giving ourselves options to keep our offense consistent.”

The Lady Trojans will resume their season and league play on January 6th when Southeast returns to the Purple Palace for a matchup with Minneapolis.

Lady Trojans knock off Sacred Heart to win 28th-straight league contest

ASSARIA. KS -&nbsp;Margaret Ann (Tinkler) Peck, 68, died on December 17, 2022, peacefully surrounded by family. She was born on September 14, 1954, in Salina to Neal and Maxine (Shirack) Tinkler. 

She married Melvin Peck on December 20, 1974, in Salina, KS.

Margaret was born and raised in rural Saline County. 

She graduated from Southeast of Saline High School in 1972. Following high school, she attended Kansas State University in Manhattan and then completed her college education at Kansas Wesleyan in Salina where she received a degree in elementary education. 

Her first teaching position was at Kipp Elementary. Soon after when the communities consolidated, she continued teaching at Southeast of Saline. Teaching was her passion and she loved teaching at the 6th grade level her entire 32-year career. 

She was an active member of the Mentor United Methodist Church where she also sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school and VBS. 

Her many interests included cooking, baking, gardening, reading, quilting, and going on quilting trips with her friends, and taking harvest meals to the field for her son and neighbors. Her favorite, however, was being with family and supporting her kids and grandkids activities. Being a devoted wife, mom and grandma were her greatest honors.

She was preceded in death by her parents Neal and Maxine Tinkler; in-laws William and Lucy Peck; brother Robert "Bob" Tinkler; and nephew and niece Jeremiah and Jamie Peck.

Margaret is survived by her husband Melvin Peck of Assaria; daughter Jennifer (David) Collins of Winona: and son Christopher Peck of Assaia. Other survivors include; brother Duane (Rita) Tinkler of Assaria; sister Anita (Ron) Arnold of Leon; brother-in-law Bob (Cindy) Peck of Salina; brother-in-law Don (Leigh) Peck of Newton; and sister-in-law Barb (Bob) Bradbury of Salina. Margaret has four grandchildren: Cort Collins, Gracen Lane Collins, Rhett Ashley Collins and Charles Peck. She was blessed with 29 great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-niece.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday December 22, 2022, at the Mentor United Methodist Church in Mentor. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Abilene. Visitation will be held on Wednesday December 21, 2022, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. that evening.

Memorials are suggested in care of Ryan Mortuary and will be placed in an Educational Fund for her grandchildren.

🎥Watch live as Southeast of Saline takes on Sacred Heart tonight!

To close out the December portions of their season, the Southeast of Saline and Sacred Heart boys’ basketball teams will meet in Salina for one of the most anticipated rivalry matchups of the year on Monday night.

Each squad will enter this contest riding high, as the 5-0 Trojans knocked off their third, ranked opponent of the season in Hillsboro on Thursday, while the 4-1 Knights bounced Berean Academy on Friday.

For a Southeast team currently ranked #1 in Class 3A, this game represents not only an opportunity to hold onto that spot going into the new year but also a chance to get a leg up on one of their fiercest league rivals.

“Obviously this is a fun rivalry and it’s cool to be the only teams in the county playing on a Monday, that’ll add some juice,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “Things haven’t been any different with in preparation. We’re going to continue to prepare the same way every single game and our guys are excited to play in that atmosphere.”

For Sacred Heart, this game will serve as another big measuring stick to see where the team truly is ahead of the holiday break.

“Rivalries are part of high school sports and that’s great but the bigger picture is that we have to see how we perform against a really good basketball team,” Knights head coach Brian Gormley said. “This is another step in the process and it’s a great one to have going into the break because we can see where we stack up and continue to get better when we come back.”

Many of Sacred Heart’s preseason questions revolved around the graduation of senior standout Alex Disberger, who was a rebounding machine for his entire career.

If Disberger’s absence was supposed to bother the Knights, it hasn’t shown on the floor, as Sacred Heart wasted no time getting right back to their winning ways to start the season.

“Our ability to compete on the glass has been good to see,” Gormley said. “We return a lot of experience but our ability to fill that gap in after what we lost has been impressive this year.”

That tenacious effort on the glass has been recognized by Southeast of Saline as well, and the Trojans will be preparing for a real battle on the boards despite holding a size advantage on Monday.

“When you look at their roster this is a team that should be dominated on the glass but they haven’t been,” Flax said, “That’s really a testament to Brian Gormley and the way he gets those guys prepared to overcome something that should have been a low point on their team.”

In order to keep control of a rivalry that had been long dominated by Sacred Heart, the Trojans will need to find an answer for the stellar play of Michael Matteucci, who has averaged 17 points per game while shooting nearly 60% from the floor and 40% from deep.

“They shoot the ball really well,” Flax said. “Matteucci is playing as well as he’s ever played and if you let the Ehrlich kid stand around he’s going to make shots. They can all step out and shoot the basketball and we’re going to have to be prepared to guard.”

On the other side of the matchup, the Knights will have to overcome Southeast’s depth, something that has been a major swing factor in their five wins so far.

“You’ve got nine guys coming at you with this team,” Gormley said. “Transition defense and defensive rebounding will be big keys for us. If we’re fortunate enough to get them to miss shots we have to limit them to single possessions and we can’t let them get out in transition.”

Tip-off between the Knights and Trojans is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Sacred Heart High School following the girl’s game at 6.

Top-ranked Trojans travel to Sacred Heart for clash of NCAA titans

The Southeast of Saline and Sacred Heart girl’s basketball teams will each look to close out the December portion of their season on a high note when the two meet in Salina for a rare Monday matchup.

For the 5th-ranked Lady Trojans, this game represents an opportunity to continue climbing the 3A ladder and to head into the new year undefeated while for the 1-4 Lady Knights, it’s a chance to get back on the right side of a big rivalry and take some much-needed momentum into the break.

Southeast of Saline will come into this contest at 5-0, fresh off their first ranked victory of the season after dispatching #4 Hillsboro on the road last Thursday.

“Getting a win like that was good,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “That’s the kind of game that we needed to get out and win and we played controlled for the whole game. We took the things we had worked on in practice and transitioned them to the game well.”

On the other side of the matchup, Sacred Heart is much better on the floor than their record would indicate, but has faced an early-season gauntlet to start their campaign.

“We’re still on our journey and we’re still getting more mentally tough every game,” Lady Knights head coach Carl Hines said. “We’ve played a meat grinder of a schedule with #1 Berean Academy, Rossville, and Clifton-Clyde. I think we’ve played well at times, we just haven’t put together a full game but our schedule has prepared us well.”

To take the next step and snap a four-game losing streak, Sacred Heart will have to do what no NCAA opponent has been able to in the last 27 tries; defeat the Lady Trojans in a league matchup.

“Our players always want to go out and perform in a rivalry game and they know our expectations,” Hines said. “Southeast is very well coached and this is going to be a dogfight but our expectation is that we give ourselves a chance to win it in the end.”

Unlike last year, Southeast is also anticipating a close matchup, affording the Lady Knights a great deal of respect in the buildup to this one. “We know this isn’t going to be an easy game and they’re going to be ready for us,” Smith said. “They’re a much-improved team and they’re a year older with a lot of experience. We know we’re going to have to play well tonight to win and we’re going to have to do things the right way.”

As they have throughout their first several games, SES will have to contend with the size of Sacred Heart, and be willing to scrap to win the game on the glass, while also sharing the ball offensively.

“They have a big post player inside and size is always going to hurt us a little bit,” Smith said. “They push the ball up the court well which is something that we like to do also so we have to play controlled and make that extra pass and find that open shooter. We have to work together as a team and keep our turnovers down.”

Meanwhile, the Lady Knights will have to contend with the speed and quickness of an SES team that has hounded opponents defensively and gotten out into transition well this season.

“They space the court really well,” Hines said. “They have a ton of girls who can shoot it from three and they’re tough as nails in their quarter-court defense. We’ve got to be really disciplined and mentally tough for 32 minutes. We need to rebound as a team and we definitely need to limit their transition looks. This should be fun.”

Tip-off between the Lady Trojans and Knights is set for 6 pm on the campus of Sacred Heart High School in Salina, with the boys’ game to follow at 7:30.

Alex Junior Hanschu passed away on December 13, 2022 at Hillsboro, KS. He was born on February 5, 1937 on the family farm in rural Ramona, KS. Junior was the lastborn of Alexander and Susanna (Riffel) Hanschu.&nbsp; 

Trinity Lutheran Church in Ramona was the place of both his baptism (March 7, 1937) and his confirmation of faith (April 2, 1950). Trinity Church is also where Junior married the love of his life, Jeanetta Utech on August 23, 1964.

Farming, family, and faith were at the center of his over 85 years of a life well-lived. Junior never had a different address, as he was born, raised, and lived on the originally-settled Alexander Hanschu farmstead his entire life. He would often say he would only move if it was to the cemetery west of Ramona, and on December 13 the Lord granted that wish. 

Junior was a self-employed farmer/rancher his entire life.&nbsp; He raised crops of wheat, milo, corn, and beans and was extremely proud of his herds of Hereford cattle.

Junior graduated from Ramona High School in 1954, where he played baseball, softball, and basketball. The stories told of how he and his brother Harold were ornery on and off the court were quite fascinating. He continued to play fastpitch softball as an adult, and the stories told of his and Harold’s antics on the diamond are legendary.

Family was extremely important to Junior. The love and support he gave to his children and grandchildren goes beyond comparison. Family gatherings for holidays were something Junior looked forward to and cherished year after year. Whatever the occasion or activity (often a ball game), Junior was there to support and cheer on his children and grandchildren. 

Junior, or Grandpa H as he is fondly referred to by many, became a constant presence in the Centre, Hillsboro, Little River, and Southeast of Saline communities. Grandpa’s love of family and sports, combined with his “I never met a stranger” personality, endeared him to many near and far. And wherever he was going that evening, Junior made sure his attire was the correct color to show his avid support. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially the Royals. If you called Grandpa during a Royals game, you would often get a ‘play-by-play’ of the game during your conversation.

Junior also spent countless hours promoting, supporting, and attending community events around Ramona and Marion County. If there was something going on, you could count on Junior being there. Participating for years in the Ramona Redneck Run on the 4th&nbsp;of July was just one of many things he enjoyed. He served on the Lewis Cemetery Board for many years and was on the Ramona HS Alumni Committee. You could say he was an ‘iconic’ member of the Ramona community. 

Junior served Trinity Church in various capacities (elder, trustee, officer) for decades. Church mattered to Junior, and he was a shining example of Christ-like service for us all to follow.

Junior was also known for his quick wit and ‘dad joke’ humor. When you lost something, he would always say, “I bet you found it in the last place you looked.” It was rare that you visited with Junior and didn’t laugh or grin at something he said. He also had a large collection of hats – you name it, he had the hat. He was also a competitive Pitch card player and was often the life of the party with his uncanny ability to make his bid on nothing but an Ace and Jack. Junior also spent hours reading all his newspapers from cover to cover each week. “Did you see that in the paper?” was often a common conversation starter for him. One can only imagine how many chicken-fried steaks Grandpa ate, as that was his ‘go to’ meal almost every time. He also took pride in keeping a clean house, as that is what he said Mom would have wanted.

He relied on prayer and faith to get him through many things. None more so than when he became a widower on January 30, 2010, when his wife of over 45 years passed away. Junior had to learn to live again so to say, which he proudly did so by leaning on his faith. Keeping Christ as the center of his life, Junior again had to lean on his faith as he became a two-time cancer survivor. The example he gave to his children and grandchildren as a Christian was extremely meaningful to his loved ones. In his final hours on earth, one of his final ‘actions’ was to find the strength to move and then fold his hands as the family surrounding him said the Lord’s Prayer.Junior’s greatest pride and joy was his family, which includes his children Jayson (Jan) Hanschu of Hillsboro, Jennifer (Jeff) Braden of Windom, and Jolene Albrecht of Salina; grandchildren Jakob (Kaylee) Hanschu, Jorge (fiancé Maddy) Hanschu, Jaxxon Hanschu, Josh Braden, Kallie Albrecht, Morgan Albrecht, and Landon Albrecht; sister-in-law Burma Hanschu; brothers-in-law Garland (Dianna) Utech and Marlon (Jill) Utech.Junior passed away at Hillsboro Community Hospital on December 13, 2022.
