TOPEKA— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have made an arrest.

On Friday, officers responded to the 2100 block of SW Edgewater Terrace in Topeka on a report of a possible stabbing, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Koenen.

The victim, an adult female, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the incident.

Officers developed information at the scene and an attempt to locate was issued for 37-yearold Victorio G. Peres. Peres is known to the victim.

Just after 2:30a.m. Sunday, police located him in the 1000 block of SW Garfield Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident and later booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested&nbsp;charges of Aggravated Battery and Battery, according to Koenen.

Police: Kansas man accused in violent knife attack on woman

WICHITA, Kansas — For the last two months, employees
 at Walnut Valley Packing in El Dorado have been working extra hours, 
even Saturdays, to cut, grind and package meat so it can keep up with a 
sudden spike in demand.

“I think the first time in March when 
somebody walked into Walmart or Dillon’s and saw that there’s no meat, I
 think people kind of freaked out,” said Matt Carselowey, <a href="http://www.walnutvalleypacking.com/" target="_blank">Walnut Valley Packing</a>’s plant manager.&nbsp;

The lack of meat in grocery store chains is due in part to <a href="https://www.meatpoultry.com/articles/22993-covid-19-meat-plant-map">c</a><a href="https://www.meatpoultry.com/articles/22993-covid-19-meat-plant-map" target="_blank">oronavirus-related slowdowns and closures of meatpacking plants around the country</a>. But those supply chain difficulties are creating an opportunity for local food producers — from cattle to cabbage.

Before
 the pandemic, Walnut Valley was preparing to open up a second 
storefront in a nearby town. Carselowey said he had an entire store’s 
worth of inventory in the freezer, ready to be sold.

It was barely enough to meet demand. The small, family-owned beef, pork and game processor quickly sold out of everything.

“We’ve had a lot of new customers come through the door that might not have came in otherwise,” he said.

Many were just people trying to find meat anywhere they could. But for Carselowey, it was also an opportunity.

“I
 think this has kind of opened a lot more people’s eyes to ‘Where is my 
meat coming from,’” he said, adding that people might be realizing too 
that “small processors … can offer a different product or … unique 
products.”

Walnut Valley also processes meat for local cattle 
ranchers, who sell it under their own private label (it’s called direct 
marketing).

Normally, those ranchers can get meat processed in 
about a month. But now is far from normal, and Walnut Valley’s first 
open slot is May 2021.

“We are really struggling to meet demand for our product,” said Linda Pechin-Long, co-owner of <a href="https://www.grazetheprairie.com/" target="_blank">Graze The Prairie cattle ranch in the Flint Hills</a>. “Which is a good problem to have, I guess.”

Pechin-Long
 and her husband sell their meat online and at a few local farmers 
markets. But like many direct market ranchers, they’re struggling to get
 a spot at any of the few dozen local processors left in Kansas.

“Right
 now, we’re looking at not having summer sausage for Christmas because 
we usually schedule that for processing in October, and they are booked 
through January or February of next year,” she said.

The coronavirus also 
appears to be pushing people to tap into other local producers — at 
least more than they normally would. That includes farmers markets.

“Over the past three weeks, I’ve had consistent crowds showing up,” said Luke Snow, president of the <a href="https://oldtownfarmandartmarket.com/" target="_blank">Old Town Farm and Art Market in Wichita</a>. “Everyone’s I think just happy to get out in the fresh air and sunshine and do some shopping.”

He
 said while the pure number of people attending is a little lower than 
normal, sales have been through the roof. It’s the selling points of 
local food — knowing where it comes from, if chemicals were applied and 
who has handled it — that he thinks are more appealing than ever.

At the <a href="https://kansasgrowninc.com/" target="_blank">Kansas Grown Farmers Market</a>
 across town, Jill Stimatze with Natural to the Corr said they’ve also 
seen lots of new customers this spring.&nbsp;She said she thinks one reason 
is because people feel safer at the market.

“I feel like it’s 
because it’s in the open and actually people are not touching everything
 like they would in a grocery store,” she said.

A few booths 
away, Arno Miller of Miller’s Homestyle Meals told a similar story. He 
and his wife ramped up home-delivery service as the impacts of the 
coronavirus began to set in. In early May, they set a sales record.

“I have no idea whether it will be a long-term benefit or not,” he said. “But for the time being, we’re happy to serve.”

Pandemic pushed more Kansans to buy from local butchers, farmers

A Kansas man was almost overwhelmed by a flood. But it wasn’t a flood of water, it was a flood of interest – specifically, an interest in finding local foods. Now that interest is helping build connections that are benefitting farmers and consumers across the state.

Rick McNary is a writer, photographer, global hunger expert and founder of a remarkable new Facebook group known as Shop Kansas Farms. For 20 years, he served as a pastor of a church in Potwin, Kansas. After going on a mission trip and interacting with starving people in Nicaragua, he organized a humanitarian food relief organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, he is still involved in such efforts through&nbsp;<a href="https://outreachprogram.org/" target="_blank">The Outreach Program</a>, a non-profit that organizes food packaging events across the country.

Rick has published three books.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many of his articles have been published in Kansas Farm Bureau’s&nbsp;Kansas Living&nbsp;magazine.

Then the coronavirus hit. “One night I was sitting in my recliner, talking to my wife Christine,” Rick said. “We had just had a delicious supper of beef which we had gotten from our friends Kregg and Katie Carothers in Harper County, but Christine told me that she had been to the store and the meat counter was empty.”

That meant there was a disconnect between the people raising beef and the consumers who were looking for it in the store. Rick wondered if social media might provide a way to connect local producers and consumers.

“I didn’t know much about Facebook groups but I thought I would give it a try,” Rick said.&nbsp;&nbsp;He created a group called Shop Kansas Farms on Facebook. That night he checked on the group and was startled to see how many people had already joined.

“Oh my,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Then I checked the next morning, and it was, `Holy cow!’”&nbsp;&nbsp;The interest in the group took off.

“I felt like a little kid who was walking along a dam and saw a strange object, which happened to be a plug, and pulled on it, unleashing a pent-up flood of water behind it,” Rick wrote. In four weeks, the Shop Kansas Farms Facebook group went from zero to more than 130,000 members.

Many producers were posting about their products, and many consumers were asking about them. Products included vegetables, beef, pork, cheese, honey, lavender and more.

“I’m so thankful that some friends stepped in as administrators and moderators to help manage the group,” Rick said. These included social media expert Olivia Fletcher, Meagan Cramer of Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansas Department of Agriculture staff and others.

“It’s a crazy idea that has taken off,” Rick said. Interest is so great that a Shop Kansas Farms website is being created so that people can search specifically for producers in their region.

“We want to help farmers prosper,” Rick said. “When a farmer tells me that he thought they were going to have to fold, and now they’re making money, that’s meaningful. This is creating new opportunities and people are becoming friends of farmers again.”

The project is making a difference. It’s quite an accomplishment for someone from the rural community of Potwin, population 449 people. Now, that’s rural.

After the first three weeks, Rick posted his thoughts about this phenomenon, including the following observations:

“A local and regional community is being built around agriculture. Consumers are learning real-time about how agriculture works…Rural revitalization is taking place. People want to buy local. But it wasn’t a flood of water, it was a flood of interest – specifically, an interest in finding local foods. Now that interest is helping build connections that are benefitting farmers and consumers across the state.Rick McNary is a writer, photographer, global hunger expert and founder of a remarkable new Facebook group known as Shop Kansas Farms. For 20 years, he served as a pastor of a church in Potwin, Kansas. After going on a mission trip and interacting with starving people in Nicaragua, he organized a humanitarian food relief organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, he is still involved in such efforts through&nbsp;<a href="https://outreachprogram.org/" target="_blank">The Outreach Program</a>, a non-profit that organizes food packaging events across the country.Rick has published three books.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many of his articles have been published in Kansas Farm Bureau’s&nbsp;Kansas Living&nbsp;magazine.Then the coronavirus hit. “One night I was sitting in my recliner, talking to my wife Christine,” Rick said. “We had just had a delicious supper of beef which we had gotten from our friends Kregg and Katie Carothers in Harper County, but Christine told me that she had been to the store and the meat counter was empty.”That meant there was a disconnect between the people raising beef and the consumers who were looking for it in the store. Rick wondered if social media might provide a way to connect local producers and consumers.“I didn’t know much about Facebook groups but I thought I would give it a try,” Rick said.&nbsp;&nbsp;He created a group called Shop Kansas Farms on Facebook. That night he checked on the group and was startled to see how many people had already joined.“Oh my,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Then I checked the next morning, and it was, `Holy cow!’”&nbsp;&nbsp;The interest in the group took off.“I felt like a little kid who was walking along a dam and saw a strange object, which happened to be a plug, and pulled on it, unleashing a pent-up flood of water behind it,” Rick wrote. In four weeks, the Shop Kansas Farms Facebook group went from zero to more than 130,000 members.Many producers were posting about their products, and many consumers were asking about them. Products included vegetables, beef, pork, cheese, honey, lavender and more.“I’m so thankful that some friends stepped in as administrators and moderators to help manage the group,” Rick said. These included social media expert Olivia Fletcher, Meagan Cramer of Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansas Department of Agriculture staff and others.“It’s a crazy idea that has taken off,” Rick said. Interest is so great that a Shop Kansas Farms website is being created so that people can search specifically for producers in their region.“We want to help farmers prosper,” Rick said. “When a farmer tells me that he thought they were going to have to fold, and now they’re making money, that’s meaningful. This is creating new opportunities and people are becoming friends of farmers again.”The project is making a difference. It’s quite an accomplishment for someone from the rural community of Potwin, population 449 people. Now, that’s rural.After the first three weeks, Rick posted his thoughts about this phenomenon, including the following observations:“A local and regional community is being built around agriculture. Consumers are learning real-time about how agriculture works…Rural revitalization is taking place. People want to buy local. American Pharoah led all the way to win the Belmont Stakes by 5½ lengths, becoming the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Serena Williams won her third French Open title and 20th major singles trophy by beating Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-7 (2, 6-2.

One year ago: After two days of intense criticism, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden reversed course and declared that he no longer supported a long-standing congressional ban on the use of federal health money to pay for abortions. World leaders including President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron gathered at the site of the D-Day landings in France to honor those who took part in the operation 75 years earlier that would help bring an Allied victory in World War II. R&amp;B singer R. Kelly pleaded not guilty in Chicago to 11 additional sex-related charges. New Orleans singer and piano player Dr. John died at the age of 77; his family said the musician, who was born Mac Rebennack, had died of a heart attack.

Abilene's Brooks among winners of lottery trip to Bahamas

BARTON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges following a drug bust.

Just before 4p.m. Thursday, the Great Bend Police Department, with the assistance of Ellinwood Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff's Office, executed a burglary and narcotics search warrant at a residence located at 205 N. Wilhelm Street in Ellinwood as part of an ongoing burglary and narcotics investigation, according to a media release.

During the execution of the search warrant, resident Alicia D. Hoeffner, 39, was located inside the residence.

During a thorough search of the residence, methamphetamine, marijuana and items of illegal drug paraphernalia were located. 

Hoeffner was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hoeffner was transported to the Barton County Detention Center and booked in lieu of bond.

Erin Miller is the proud granddaughter of Elaine Danforth Harmon, a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during WWII. Her grandmother’s last request was to be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. After she died in April 2015, this request was denied by the U.S. Army which runs the cemetery. 

Miller led a grassroots, social media, and direct lobbying campaign to fight the decision. This campaign was a success.

James “Jim” W. Davis, 72, owner of Jim Davis A/C of Marion, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020.

Jim was born September 14, 1947, to William Edsel Davis and Mary Elizabeth Davis (Transue) in Smith Center, Kansas.&nbsp; Jim graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1965 and completed Technical School with two certifications in Engineering and HVAC.&nbsp; He was a Sergeant in the US Army during the Vietnam War as a Radio Teletype.&nbsp; On May 17, 1969, Jim married Jannette Penner in Olathe, Kansas.&nbsp; After some time, Jim settled his family in Marion, Kansas and proceeded to build his family.&nbsp;

Jim was a life member of the local VFW and served as the Commander in Chief the last few years.&nbsp; He also served 42 years with Marion Fire Department, where he ended his career there as the Assistant Fire Chief.&nbsp; Jim had a private pilot license and loved to fly in his Cherokee plane and his ultra-light around Marion County, and many times beyond.

His father, William E. Davis preceded him in death.&nbsp; His loving family includes his wife, Jannette “Jan” Davis of the home; his mother, Mary Davis of Bashor, Kansas; sons, William H. Davis of Aurora, Colorado, James Davis (spouse Betsy Davis) of Halstead, Kansas; daughters, Michele Seadeek of Marion, Jamie Davis (spouse Brian Penning) of Defiance, Missouri, Jessica Euwer (spouse Derek Euwer) of Burrton, Kansas; and nine grandchildren.&nbsp;

Service will be held at Davis Homestead at 2224 Gilham Rd, Marion, Kansas on Tuesday, June 9th, 2020 at 11:00 A.M.

James “Jim” W. Davis

Dick’s life began on January 27, 1937, the son of Edmund and Thekla (Storck) Schnitker in Hoyleton, Illinois. He graduated from Concordia High School Class of 1954 and continued his education to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Education from Concordia University in 1958. He married Betty Jean Weber on June 15, 1958 in Amherst, Colorado. Dick was a music and elementary school teacher and later worked in sales and management.

Dick and Betty worked where the work took them from Evansville, Indiana, Saginaw, Michigan, Hutchinson, Kansas, Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado, Farmington and Grants New Mexico, Frisco, Texas and Wichita, Kansas. Wherever they lived Dick was involved with the church as an organist or choir director, church boards and a Bible study teacher. He was also involved in Civitan, Lions and several civic organizations.

His loving family includes his wife of almost 62 years, Betty of the home; son, Terry Schnitker of Augusta, Kansas, granddaughters, Makenzi and Mariah Schnitker of Augusta; a brother and his wife, Rollen and Gerri Schnitker, and a sister-in-law, Margaret “Ann” Schnitker all of Hoyleton, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael (May 5, 2020) and his brother, Donald Schnitker. Dick passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2020 at the age of 83 years old. He is now breathing easily as he is playing and singing joyfully to his Lord and Savior.
