SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects after a Tuesday drug raid.

On Monday, the Shawnee County Drug Enforcement Task Force served a narcotic search warrant in the 3600 Blk of SW Kirklawn, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Deputies and Topeka Police Officers located methamphetamine, marijuana, three firearms, a large quantity of US currency and drug paraphernalia during the search warrant.

They arrested Stephen L. Lester,62, of Topeka was arrested and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Possession of Methamphetamine W/Intent to Distribute and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Armando Rangel, 47, of Topeka and Stephanie A. Graham, 42, of Topeka were also booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Possession of Methamphetamine.

NEW YORK— A Salina South High School graduate has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize.

Anne Boyer's "elegant and unforgettable narrative about the brutality of illness and the capitalism of cancer care in America,"The Undying: Pain, Vulnerability, Mortality, Medicine, Art, Time, Dreams, Data, Exhaustion, Cancer, and Care," won the award for General Nonfiction.

A widely-published poet and essayist, Boyer has been teaching at the Kansas City Art Institute since 2007.&nbsp;

Boyer earned an M.F.A. with distinction in creative writing in 1997 from Wichita State University and a B.A. degree in English literature in 1996 from Kansas State University, according to the KCAI website. She is a graduate of Salina South High School.

The award comes with a cash prize of fifteen thousand dollars.

&nbsp;Winners in fifteen journalism and seven book, drama and music categories were announced on Monday afternoon by the Pulitzer committee. It's the organization's 104th year honoring excellence in journalism and the arts.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Restaurant dining rooms, retail stores and some offices began reopening Monday after Kansas lifted a statewide stay-at-home order, though some business owners hesitated, still concerned about the novel coronavirus.

<a href="https://apnews.com/abd6bb1cfc4f6349d94f853f04b12bcb">Gov. Laura Kelly plans</a>&nbsp;to reopen the pandemic-battered economy in four stages between now an at least June 15. The first stage began when the her stay-at-home order expired at midnight Sunday, allowing dine-in service in restaurants and the reopening of stores, though social distancing still must be observed.

But some owners weren’t ready to open their stores to in-person shoppers. In Wichita, Watermark Books and Cafe remained closed except for online orders and curbside pickup, though owner Sarah Bagby has seen business drop 60% to 70%. She said she’s still working out issues that come with running a store where customers had been used to handling multiple books while browsing.

“We’re going to do this slowly and deliberately,” she said. “What once was once considered cozy is now considered risky, so we have to kind of reconfigure some things.”

Many businesses, including bars, gyms, theaters, barbershops and hair and nail salons, must remain closed until the second phase begins on May 18. That’s also when a 10-person mass gathering limit would increase, first to 30 until June 1 and then 90 until June 15.

Kelly’s plan already&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/e047671519a2e0d18115103f45162df7">has drawn criticism</a>&nbsp;for treating certain types of businesses differently from others. She’s also allowing local officials to impose stricter rules.

In the Kansas City area, Johnson County, the state’s most populous county, and neighboring Wyandotte County, are keeping stay-at-home orders in place through this Sunday. The two counties account for more than 100 of the state’s 136 reported COVID-19-related deaths.

In Shawnee County, home to the state capital of Topeka, Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino, the health officer, said the county’s 24 new cases last week were more than double the number the previous week, and cases with no tie to a previous infection source are more frequent. He said new restrictions are possible.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Kansas rose by 4.3% on Monday, up 215 to 5,245 total, though the actual number is thought to be higher because of limited testing and because people can be infected without showing symptoms. Reported COVID-19-related deaths increased by two.

The Kansas Department of Corrections reported that a third inmate died in a coronavirus outbreak at the state prison in Lansing, near Kansas City. Some 380 inmates and 88 employees have tested positive there, and there have been more than 480 confirmed cases among inmates and staff at seven of the state’s nine other prisons, but no deaths.

The coronavirus can cause severe illness or death, particularly for older people or people with existing medical conditions. But most infected people have mild or moderate symptoms that clear up within a few weeks.

In northwestern Kansas, Junelle Hills put up the open sign for Interior Connection and Quilt Cabin in Colby. It sells curtains, quilting supplies and portable sheds and cabins, and Hills said she was looking forward to “getting back to normal.”

Her door has been locked for weeks, but she shipped material for masks and let in individual customers who needed supplies to make them. She remained busy even as the normal weekday 8:30 a.m. bustle in her hometown disappeared, she said.

“It was kind of scary some mornings, driving to work, because it was like a ghost town,” she said.

In Dodge City in southwestern Kansas, Brenda Lee was eager to reopen the I Don’t Care Family Restaurant, so named because that was often the answer she or her husband gave when the other asked where they should eat. The reopening won’t happen for a week or two, but that’s because of a renovation undertaken during the stay-at-home order.

Lee said the restaurant was observing social distancing before the stay-at-home order. Even without the coronavirus, she said, the restaurant has to worry about people coming in with illnesses like the flu.

“That’s the risk of being a business, period,” she said.

Some Kansas businesses eagerly reopen, but others hesitate



Virginia Ann (Baier) Anderes, age 86, of Elmo, Kansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 3, 2020. As she walked her final journey on this earth, she was surrounded by many loving children and grandchildren.

Virginia was born on July 22, 1933 in Salina, Kansas to James and Leona Baier. Virginia was their fourth child.

On October 11th, 1952 she wed the love of her life, Vincent (Herman) Anderes, whom she was married to for over 60 years, and had nine children: Bill Anderes, Rhonda Foth, Greg Anderes (Sharon, Diane Shoemaker (Rodney, Yvonne Woodall (Dennis, Kim Svoboda (Kevin, Mark Anderes (Jill, Mike Anderes (Lenece) and Lisa Elliott.

Virginia was a wonderful mother who was passionate about her children. Her interests were taking care of her nine children, raising flowers, and caring for her chickens. For over 20 years Virginia would take flowers to St. Columba church, where she was a lifetime member. She would frequently place fresh cut flowers at the foot of the statue of our “Blessed Virgin Mary”. These fresh cut flowers were often arranged in a beautiful bouquet of roses and gladiolus, which were her specialty.

Virginia lived her whole life in the Elmo community. She was loved by many for her warmth and kindness. She would lend a helping hand to anyone and knew no strangers. Her 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “Chicken Grandma,” adored her and enjoyed their days with her while she taught them to needlepoint, play piano and bake pies (her coconut cream pie was over the top). Perhaps her best passed-on skill, from the tales of her grandchildren, was how to properly gather chicken eggs while warding off hostile poultry.

As if raising nine kids wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Virginia also worked outside of the home. She started her career as the counter manager of the Elmo Elevator, followed by secretarial work at Tabor College, and wrapping up her career at the Salina Catholic Diocese Office of Education. Virginia was a member of the St. Columba Altar Society.

Virginia will be greatly missed by many and will never be forgotten.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Anderes; father and mother, James and Leona Baier; two sisters, Catherine Baier and Marilyn Anderes; and two brothers, James and Wayne Baier.

Virginia’s celebration of life will be a private ceremony with family members only at St. Columba Catholic church, Elmo, Kansas, followed by her interment at the Mount Calvary cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to attend the funeral procession to the burial site. We ask everyone to be mindful of proper social distancing. Anyone wishing to sign the register book may do so from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Virginia Ann (Baier) Anderes, age 86, of Elmo, Kansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 3, 2020. As she walked her final journey on this earth, she was surrounded by many loving children and grandchildren.Virginia was born on July 22, 1933 in Salina, Kansas to James and Leona Baier. Virginia was their fourth child.On October 11th, 1952 she wed the love of her life, Vincent (Herman) Anderes, whom she was married to for over 60 years, and had nine children: Bill Anderes, Rhonda Foth, Greg Anderes (Sharon, Diane Shoemaker (Rodney, Yvonne Woodall (Dennis, Kim Svoboda (Kevin, Mark Anderes (Jill, Mike Anderes (Lenece) and Lisa Elliott.Virginia was a wonderful mother who was passionate about her children. Her interests were taking care of her nine children, raising flowers, and caring for her chickens. For over 20 years Virginia would take flowers to St. Columba church, where she was a lifetime member. She would frequently place fresh cut flowers at the foot of the statue of our “Blessed Virgin Mary”. These fresh cut flowers were often arranged in a beautiful bouquet of roses and gladiolus, which were her specialty.Virginia lived her whole life in the Elmo community. She was loved by many for her warmth and kindness. She would lend a helping hand to anyone and knew no strangers. Her 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “Chicken Grandma,” adored her and enjoyed their days with her while she taught them to needlepoint, play piano and bake pies (her coconut cream pie was over the top). Perhaps her best passed-on skill, from the tales of her grandchildren, was how to properly gather chicken eggs while warding off hostile poultry.As if raising nine kids wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Virginia also worked outside of the home. She started her career as the counter manager of the Elmo Elevator, followed by secretarial work at Tabor College, and wrapping up her career at the Salina Catholic Diocese Office of Education. Virginia was a member of the St. Columba Altar Society.Virginia will be greatly missed by many and will never be forgotten.She is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Anderes; father and mother, James and Leona Baier; two sisters, Catherine Baier and Marilyn Anderes; and two brothers, James and Wayne Baier.Virginia’s celebration of life will be a private ceremony with family members only at St. Columba Catholic church, Elmo, Kansas, followed by her interment at the Mount Calvary cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to attend the funeral procession to the burial site. We ask everyone to be mindful of proper social distancing. For millions of people around the world dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, sleep brings no relief.

The horrors of COVID-19, and the surreal and frightening ways it has upended daily life, are infecting dreams and exposing feelings of fear, loss, isolation and grief that transcend culture, language and national boundaries.

Everyone from a college teacher in Pakistan to a mall cashier in Canada to an Episcopalian priest in Florida is confronting the same daytime demon. Each is waking up in a sweat in the dead of night.

Experts say humanity has rarely experienced “collective dreaming” on such a broad scale in recorded history — and certainly never while also being able to share those nightmares in real time.

“It’s that alarming feeling of when you wake up and think, ‘Thank heavens I woke up,’” said Holly Smith, an elementary school librarian in Detroit. “Once it hits your dreams, you think, ‘Great, now I can’t even escape there.’”

The psychological toll is staggering, particularly for health care workers whose dreams show similarities to those of combat veterans and 9/11 responders, said Deirdre Barrett, a Harvard University professor who is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B8S75CN" target="_blank">surveying</a>&nbsp;COVID dreamers worldwide. She has collected 6,000 dream samples from about 2,400 people.

So many people are sharing accounts of dreams online that there’s a Twitter account dedicated to gathering them in a virtual library under the handle “I Dream of COVID.”

“As far as I know, no one has dream samples from the flu pandemic of 1918 — and that would probably be the most comparable thing,” said Barrett, who has studied the dreams of 9/11 survivors and British prisoners of war in World War II. “Now we just all have our smartphones by our bed, so you can just reach over and speak it or type it down. Recording our dreams has never been easier.”

The dreams are also exposing what is bothering us the most about the pandemic. The themes seem universal.

Dreams of a safe place suddenly overtaken by the virus speak to contagion’s terrifying invisibility, says Cathy Caruth, a professor at Cornell University who has studied trauma for 30 years. Pandemic dreams, she says, are reminiscent of the experience of Hiroshima survivors, who worried about invisible radiation exposure, and also of some nightmares described by Vietnam veterans.

“They seem to be in part about things that are hard to grasp, what it means that anybody can be a threat and you can be a threat to everybody,” Caruth said.

Episcopalian priest Mary Alice Mathison dreamed 500 people showed up for a funeral in her church and wouldn’t go home. Other dreams underscore that no one knows how the pandemic will end. In those, the dreamer wakes with a start before learning how it turned out.

Ashley Trevino is still trying to process one terrifying dream. The 24-year-old barista is out of work due to the pandemic and was spooked when officials announced the first COVID-19 death in her central Texas county.

A few days later, she dreamed she and her girlfriend were in line to enter a dark, metal warehouse where they’d be injected with the new coronavirus by government workers wearing Hazmat suits. Fluorescent lights in the parking lot cast an eerie glow as she watched her partner get the shot and gasp for breath. Then she got the shot, too.

“I watched her kind of collapse against the wall and while I was trying to fight the effects of it and not pass out myself, I was like ... ‘Is she dead now?’”

Trevino woke up whimpering. She immediately felt an impulse to share her nightmare with someone — anyone — and tweeted it to the world from her bed.

In Pakistan’s Punjab province, a college literature teacher described dreaming she was one of only 100 people left on the planet who didn’t have COVID-19. The infected population had gained political control and was chasing the uninfected “so the world would become the same for everyone,” said Roha Rafiq, 28.

Rafiq is terrified for her elderly father, who insists on going to prayers every day despite a cough and a stay-at-home order. “I think,” she said in a Twitter direct message, “this anxiety has given me this dream.”

According to Barrett, many people dream they are sick with COVID-19 or of being overcome by what seem to be stand-ins for the virus: swarms of bugs, slithering worms, witches, grasshoppers with fangs. Others dream of being in crowded public places without a mask or proper social distancing.

Still others dream of losing control. In one such dream, the dreamer was held down by infected people who coughed on her. In another, the dreamer came across bands of people shooting at random strangers.

Most are lower-level anxiety dreams, not trauma-induced nightmares. But that changes dramatically for frontline health workers, Barrett says.

“The health care providers are the ones who look like a trauma population. They are having flat-out nightmares that reenact the things they’re experiencing and … they all have the theme that ‘I am responsible for saving this person’s life and I’m not succeeding and this person is about to die,’” she said.

“And when they dream about their child or parent getting it, for the care providers there’s always the next step in the dream where they realize ... ‘I gave it to them.’”

Even the simple, unadorned dreams — far from the drama of the ICU — seem poignant right now. Some people dream of getting a hug, attending a party, getting a haircut, going to the library.

Lauren Nickols, 30, an avid reader, stocked up on library books before Ohio’s stay-at-home order. Now her supply is running low. She recently dreamed her dresser was piled with books. She found the dream reassuring, but a reminder of the mundane things that have been lost.

“I guess it’s a bit of a sense of shared community, but it’s also really sad that we’re all missing things. It really shows you all the things you do without realizing it,” she says. “And now that you can’t, it’s a shock to the system.”

`Infecting our dreams': Pandemic sabotages sleep worldwide

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made an arrest.

&nbsp;Just after 10:00p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a vehicle burglary that had just occurred in the 3500 block of SE 2nd Street in Shawnee County, according to Deputy Shayna Anderson.

The reporting party was able to give a detailed description of the suspect's vehicle.

 Approximately one hour later a deputy stopped a vehicle matching that description at SE 2nd Terrace and High Street in Topeka. 

The deputy located a stolen item inside and arrested Erick M. Weems Jr., 25, of Topeka and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the requested charges of burglary and driving with a suspended license.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man in connection with another violent attack.

Just before 7 p.m.&nbsp; Thursday, officers responded to an area hospital regarding an assault report, according to officer Charley Davidson.

 Upon arrival, officers contacted a 25-year-old woman who had extensive injuries to her face and neck.&nbsp; She was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed, the woman had been battered and strangled to the point of unconsciousness multiple times over several days at her home in the 2200 block of East Lockwood in Wichita, by her boyfriend identified as 27-year-old Nathan Rowe.&nbsp; 

A family member brought her to the hospital, according to Davidson.&nbsp;

Police located Rowe Friday and arrested him without incident.&nbsp; He was booked into jail for this incident and two other separate domestic violence investigations from March, involving the same victim.

He faces requested charges of domestic battery, aggravated domestic battery strangulation, and aggravated domestic battery, stemming from multiple domestic violence battery, aggravated battery and strangulation investigations.

Kansas man arrested for violent attack on woman

Following Gov. Laura Kelly's announcement of a phased loosening of restrictions to mitigate
 the spread of COVID-19, Salina Public Library will work to establish a pick-up service. 

While gatherings continue
 to be limited to 10 people, the library building will remain closed.

Pick-up service is tentatively
 scheduled to begin May 18. Announcements about how to utilize this service will be made through media outlets, on the library’s Facebook page and on
<a href="http://salinapubliclibrary.org/" target="_blank">
salinapubliclibrary.org</a>. Patrons may begin returning library items to book drops on May 12. These are located on the west side of the library building and Dillons stores. Late fines will not begin accruing until June 1. If additional restrictions are put
 in place, these dates may be extended.

The library offers a
 variety of digital services including Sunflower eLibrary, Hoopla and RBDigital. New library cards can be obtained through the library's website. Interactive activities and Tuesday Talks, Q&amp;A sessions on specific topics, are available on the library's Facebook
 page. Library staff are on hand to answer questions via website chat or by email at

SHAWNEE COUNTY– A total of four teens were arrested Thursday following an incident at the Days Inn in Topeka.

Just after noon Thursday, officers from the Topeka Police Department responded to the Days Inn, 1510 SW Wanamaker Road on a report of three persons who were possibly unresponsive in a room at the motel, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Koenen.

Officers made contact with a total of five people who were responsive, but were showing possible signs of impairment. 

Medical personnel arrived on scene and all five individuals were medically cleared.

Upon further investigation, a total of four teens are facing&nbsp; charges including a 17-year-old boy who was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Juvenile Detention Center on the following charges Possession of stolen property Criminal carry of a weapon and Criminal damage.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Juvenile Intake for a Misdemeanor warrant

A 17-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Juvenile Intake on the requested charges of Obstruction and 3 misdemeanor warrants.

A 17-year-old girl was arrested and taken to Juvenile Intake for an alleged Probation violation.

In an effort to develop something tangible to support civic pride, and supported by grant and sponsorship dollars, the idea of a public mural was born. The group contracted with local artist Julie Cates to design and install the mural, which is located on the north exterior wall of Ad Astra Coffee &amp; Books, 141 N. Santa Fe, amid a new plaza that was part of the city’s downtown streetscape project.Brown continued, “Once the mural was installed, Julie Cates gave the rights for the design to the Chamber for use in promoting Salina.
