&nbsp; Royal C. Barten, age 91, of Abilene, passed away Monday, June 22, 2020 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was born January 19, 1929 near Elmo, Kansas on the family farm. The son of Fred and Julia (Lauer) Barten. Royal attended Chapman Schools and graduated from Chapman High School. Royal spent his entire life on the family farm raising cattle and farming. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the lake waterskiing and in later years he was an avid square dancer. He is survived by his sister Velma Becker of Abilene, sister-in-law Pauline Barten of Wichita, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Alfred, Herbert, and Alden Barten, sisters Alberta Snitker, Dorothy Barten and an infant sibling. Graveside services for Royal will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the New Basel Cemetery south of Abilene with Pastor Bill Graves officiating. Friends may sign the register book Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. MCPHERSON -- Helping its member businesses recover from challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic recently got a little easier for McPherson Main Street.

Last week, the National Main Street Center (NMSC) announced that McPherson Main Street was one of eight Kansas recipients of $3,000 from the Union Pacific Kansas Main Street Recovery Fund, a grant program to support the economic recovery of Kansas downtowns and commercial districts impacted by COVID-19. This program is made possible by Union Pacific, and grant funds will go toward implementing ideas for marketing or promotion to help commercial districts reopen safely.

“We are thrilled to provide support to these Main Streets to help ensure Kansas downtowns and commercial districts remain vibrant in the months and years to come,” said Ben Jones, senior director of public affairs at Union Pacific. “Our employees live and work in these communities, and we believe these projects will have a positive impact, igniting the economy as we recover from the pandemic.”

Grant project ideas were judged based on how they would contribute to commercial district recovery efforts, as well as their community impact after the initial project implementation. Recipients are all designated Main Street America communities and recognized Union Pacific communities.

McPherson Main Street's project is "Shop the Night Away - Paws-itively Purr-fect," a downtown shopping event from 4-9 p.m. on July 10, Ann Engel, McPherson Main Street executive director, told Salina Post. 

"The funds will be used for marketing the event as a boost to restart our McPherson Main Street member businesses," Engel said.

"In addition to the UP grant award of $3,000, since we were in the top four, we were also awarded a one-on-one tech support from National Main Street Center field services staff and a one-year membership in Main Street America," she added.

Engel said it is too early to determine whether the downtown businesses will come out of the pandemic shut-down intact.

"Did any businesses not re-open after the shut-down was removed? Yes. A couple did not, but many are still in early recovery mode, and I believe it will take us all as a community to help them pull through," Engel said.

Finding creative ways to weather the pandemic

Even through the most restrictive parts of the pandemic shut-down, McPherson Main Street businesses found creative ways to generate revenue, Engel noted.

"Well, I am most definitely not impartial, but I truly believe that we have some of the most dedicated, hard-working and creative business owners that exist anywhere, right here in McPherson, Kansas, and I am proud to be able to help them succeed in any way possible," she said.

Engel said that one example of a creative member business was Twice Told Tales, a used bookstore. 

"As a non-essential business, and a low price point business, she was really struggling. She would do 'browsing' posts of specific sections and feature books and info about that section. She also offered 'Mystery Boxes' where she put together a bag of like-themed books based on customer interests," Engel said. "She found several online partnerships like Libro.fm, an audiobook service that supports independent bookstores, as well as delivery and curbside pickup."

Another member business, The Cook's Nook, had to cancel its in-store cooking classes, and instead provided live video posts of the classes and offered specials on ingredient packages along with the recipes, she said. 

"They also created a group for cooks and featured a weekly spice and asked members to share their recipes that included the featured ingredient," Engel said.

"The Stone Chimney, a home décor store, did live weekly sales and increased their shipping and online orders. The list goes on!" she said.

Additionally, McPherson Main Street worked to help its member businesses during the shut-down, Engle noted.

"We created a Support Local BINGO card for shoppers that included a variety of options and ways to stay connected. We shared daily posts from businesses on our Facebook page to help them showcase their services available and feature products," Engel explained. "We also worked with other groups on contests where winners received gift cards to various businesses. There were many businesses that stepped up and bought local gift cards and created unique ways to give them out."

McPherson Main Street also provided grant funding to businesses that had not received federal aid, thanks to partnerships with a local foundation and several other organizations, she said. 

About the McPherson Main Street businesses

Engel said McPherson Main Street has 125 member businesses.

"We have a great variety! We have entertainment options with a movie theatre, the Opera House, outdoor concert areas; a variety of local restaurants -- Mexican, Chinese, Italian, deli, burgers, American diner, retail with clothing boutiques, jewelry, accessories, western wear and boots, bridal and prom wear, games and toys, floral, home décor, gifts, grilling, hardware and tools, cookware, food and seasonings, health supplements, outdoor and indoor furniture, electronics, appliances, just about anything you need!" Engel explained. "There is also a nice mix of service businesses; insurance, medical related, accounting, printing, financial, legal and design."

McPherson Main Street receives UP grant to help businesses

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two woman on drug charges in Barton County.

Just after 1:30p.m. Friday, sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at 5907 Eisenhower Ct. apartment B in Great Bend, according to sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Sheriff’s Office detectives had obtained information about possible illicit drug sales at that residence.&nbsp; Detectives gained entry to the residence and discovered a quantity of methamphetamine, prescription drugs and marijuana.

 A 9 mm handgun as well as evidence of drug distribution was also found in the apartment.

Deputies arrested Carissa Wagner, 28 of Great Bend and booked her on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. She is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Also arrested at the location was Amber Wilson, 40 of Great Bend Wilson on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, her bond is also $50,000, according to Bellendir.

Sheriff: 2 women accused of selling drugs in Great Bend

Altrusa International of Salina, Kansas Inc. garnered numerous regional awards during recent judging of service projects by the 23 Altrusa clubs across Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma that comprise District Eight.

The local chapter of Altrusa International is comprised of women ages 25 and up from Salina and surrounding towns, who create and implement service projects to directly benefit those in Saline County.

Awards won by Altrusa International of Salina include first place for club display board, second-place tie for club communications (newsletter, website, social media), second place for club yearbook, second place for the Mamie L. Bass Award with “Kids On The Move” in partnership with Saint Francis Ministries, and second place for the Nina Fay Calhoun Award, with “Days for Girls, Part II.”

Salina civic group wins regional honors; individuals recognized

HUTCHINSON — Rev up your engines! The Kansas State Fair is bringing action-packed motorsport events to the Nex-Tech Wireless Grandstand this September.

The dirt-filled weekend begins with the Moto Madness &amp; Fire Thrill Show - a new event slated for 5 p.m. Sept. 12. Then, returning by popular demand, is the All Star Monster Truck Tour, which will invade the Fairgrounds for an afternoon of destruction at 3 p.m. Sept. 13.&nbsp;

The Fair’s annual Demolition Derby is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14.&nbsp;Tickets for all three events are now on sale.

The popularity of last year’s monster truck tour is one reason the Fair decided to bring the event back in 2020 and expand the grandstand’s dirt event offerings, said the Fair’s General Manager Robin Jennison.

“These events allow our patrons to have a good time and make memories with their families,” Jennison said. “That’s the most rewarding experience we can create here at the Kansas State Fair.”&nbsp;

“You can expect a lot of destruction,” added Jennison. “These massive vehicles will race and crash, get huge air, do wheelies and all kinds of things. They put on a great show.”

About the All Star Monster Truck Tour

The All Star Monster Truck Tour features the biggest names from across the United States to do battle on the Fair’s large grandstand infield. These All Star Monster Trucks will be competing in an insane best trick competition, full-throttle obstacle course racing and a no-rules freestyle battle. Trucks coming to the Nex-Tech Wireless Grandstand:

IRON OUTLAW&nbsp;– TV Superstar truck that has competed in the United States Canada and Mexico.

BOUNTY HUNTER&nbsp;- This Kansas native is a two-time Monster Jam World Champion.

SCARLET BANDIT&nbsp;- Another truck from Kansas, Scarlet Bandit's Dawn is also the nation's top female competitor.

Moto Madness &amp; Fire Thrill Show includes motocross stunts and extreme sports action, featuring both professional ATV racers and freestyle motocross riders — some flying over a 75-foot-wide gap at more than 30 feet in the air.

Among the highlights is the Kamakazie Kid Fire Thrill Show starring Guinness Book of World Records title holder Levi Troutman from Wyoming. Troutman will perform the "Body Burn" — running across the grandstand racetrack engulfed in flames. Also part of the show is the "Torpedo Crash" — an insane metal mayhem car crash stunt. Moreover, fairgoers will see a special "teaser" for Sunday's Monster Truck Show as the Twisted Addiction monster truck performs a car crushing freestyle exhibition.

Those wanting the ultimate experience can purchase the VIP Experience for both the monster truck and motocross event. VIP Experience tickets are $35 per person.

Monster truck, motocross action to invade Kansas State Fair

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with a stolen vehicle.

On Thursday, deputies were advised of a possible stolen vehicle in the south eastern part of Montgomery County, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

The owner of the stolen vehicle was following the vehicle when it was reported. 

The vehicle was stolen out of Independence Thursday.

During the pursuit, the owner of the stolen vehicle lost sight of it for a short time. 

South Coffeyville Police, Coffeyville Police and Deputies were dispatched to attempt to help locate the vehicle. Officers were able to locate the vehicle on U.S. 169 and State Line, according to Wade.

They arrested&nbsp; 21-year-old Chase Vankirk of Independence and booked him on requested charges of Felony Possession of stolen property.&nbsp;

Sheriff: Owner helps Kan. deputies track down stolen vehicle

Salina residents will see a colorful van delivering free children’s books&nbsp;around the community Monday through Saturday.

The Salina Area United Way is using its Community Action Mobile Outreach (CAMO) van to get the books to young readers as part of its Raising Active&nbsp;Wild&nbsp;Readers (RAWR) program. Area&nbsp;individuals recently donated more than 3,300 children’s books. The new and gently used, cleaned books will be available at five of USD 305 Summer Meals sites, and&nbsp;four city parks and some books will be placed in the&nbsp; “Free Little” libraries across the city.

“Going directly to the children and allowing them personally to select their books encourages learning and inspires imaginations during the summer,” said Brenda Gutierrez, Salina Area United Way program director. “Research shows children learn best when they are engaged and having fun.”

One goal of the local United Way is to increase the high school graduation rate. Making books more widely available to children throughout the year is vital for reading success and improvement of graduation rates, Gutierrez added.

“One of the most important things we can do for our kids is to get quality books in their hands,” said Kylee Hofmeier, Salina USD 305 Teacher of the Year. “It is amazing we have a community that helps build our students’ libraries at home.”

The Summer Meals site schedule, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., RAWR will be:

 </figure>Salina residents will see a colorful van delivering free children’s books&nbsp;around the community Monday through Saturday.The Salina Area United Way is using its Community Action Mobile Outreach (CAMO) van to get the books to young readers as part of its Raising Active&nbsp;Wild&nbsp;Readers (RAWR) program. Area&nbsp;individuals recently donated more than 3,300 children’s books. The new and gently used, cleaned books will be available at five of USD 305 Summer Meals sites, and&nbsp;four city parks and some books will be placed in the&nbsp; “Free Little” libraries across the city.“Going directly to the children and allowing them personally to select their books encourages learning and inspires imaginations during the summer,” said Brenda Gutierrez, Salina Area United Way program director. “Research shows children learn best when they are engaged and having fun.”One goal of the local United Way is to increase the high school graduation rate. SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects after the execution of. search warrant Friday in the 6100 block of SW 27th Street, according to Shawnee County Deputy Shayna Anderson.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Warrant Unit and the US Marshals Task Force apprehended Keegien R. Hamilton, 26, of Topeka on a felony arrest warrant.&nbsp;

This also led to the arrest of Megan H. Cline, 26, of Topeka, on a requested charge of felony interference with law enforcement and multiple drug charges.

Hamilton was booked on a requested charged of felon in possession of a firearm, multiple drug charges and the felony warrant, according to Anderson.

U.S. Marshals Task force makes arrest of 2 in Kan. drug bust

ABILENE -- What's a presidential library to do when a pandemic forces its closure? Why the staff finds alternative ways to continue working and interacting with the public, of course!

When the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home in Abilene was closed by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) on March 14 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff soon began working remotely.

"Our staff started working 100-percent remotely about a week later. Even though the facility has been closed, we have continued mission-critical work on a remote basis," Dawn Hammatt, director of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, told Salina Post.

At this point, the Eisenhower Presidential Library staff does not have definitive information about when the re-opening process will begin. They are, however, hopeful that Hammatt will soon be allowed back at the facility and, with the help of a handful of staff, will begin the first phase of the re-opening process.

With the size of the facility, the re-opening will be no small task.

"We have 22 acres and five buildings with varying levels of public space," Hammatt said. "Each space will receive specialized attention which will allow staff to create reopening plans that fit each space."

The safety of all persons at its facilities is of the utmost importance to NARA. 

"The National Archives and Records Administration has more than 40 facilities nationwide. Each with a unique building and staffing makeup. NARA has been working with several governmental agencies to ascertain the safest path to reopening. The agency leadership has been very thoughtful about the safety of our staff and our guests," Hammatt noted. 

A statement on the Eisenhower Presidential Library <a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/">website</a> includes the following.

"The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is committed to protecting the health and safety of our visitors, customers, and employees during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. We are basing our reopening plans on guidance from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and others. Our reopening plans also consider the availability of  personal protective equipment, consideration of local conditions, and the need to negotiate changes with vendors that provide security and cleaning services as well as the Union that represents our staff.  We are working to reopen our facility to staff in the near future. After we have reopened to staff, we will continue our ongoing planning and implement necessary changes to allow us to safely reopen to the public."

Although the Eisenhower Presidential Library has been closed for more than three months, the staff has kept busy while working remotely.

"We have created additional <a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/">website</a> content and moved our public programs to a virtual space. We've also added educational materials, several virtual tours, and online exhibits both to our website and social media channels," Hammatt explained.

Additionally, the library's archives team has created electronic versions of cross reference sheets, she noted. 

"Nearly 60,000 pages have been transcribed. This new searchable electronic version of a previously analog document will allow researchers to more readily find the relevant materials in our holdings," Hammatt said.

Six sessions of library programs, such as the book club, the Lunch &amp; Learn series, and the Evenings at Ease lectures have been offered to the public in an online format, she said.

"We were even able to produce three virtual programs with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans which are now available on our YouTube channel," Hammatt said. "The opportunity to partner with a museum in another state has been fulfilling in a way that simply wasn’t possible with our in-person programs."

The online programming has proved to be successful.

"The ability to reach a new audience and have participants from Alaska to Florida and Minnesota to Oklahoma is phenomenal. We have had participants join in from more than 20 states so far that likely would not have been able to attend an in-person program," Hammatt explained.

She continued, "Participants have been incredibly gracious and eager to be a part of the Eisenhower experience through our virtual programming. The smiles, gratitude and true appreciation shown by the participants is incredibly moving and rewarding. I am proud to be a part of the National Archives mission and honored to have a role in sharing Ike’s legacy with the world."

Pandemic doesn't stop the work of the Eisenhower Library staff
