Today in History -- Sept. 26

ABILENE -- A Tennessee man was arrested in connection to multiple storage unit burglaries in Abilene.

On Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of North Buckeye Avenue for the report of suspicious activity, according to a news release from Jason Wilkins, assistant chief of police. A citizen had observed a suspicious male at a storage unit facility in the 300 block of Northeast 14th Street. 

Officers learned that the man fled on foot prior to their arrival, but were able to locate Joshua Patrick, 22, of Dickson, Tenn., in the 2000 block of North Buckeye Avenue, the release noted.

Officers discovered a total of nine storage units located on Northeast 14th Street that had been broken into, however, they were able to determine that no property had been taken from the units, according to information from Wilkins.

As a result of the investigation, Patrick was booked into the Dickinson County Jail and could face charges that include multiple counts of burglary and criminal damage to property, Wilkins noted. 

Additionally, Patrick is believed to be involved in multiple storage unit burglaries in Junction City, according to Wilkins.

"This incident epitomizes the adage 'see something, say something.' Fortunately, an observant citizen alerted our officers to activity they felt was suspicious. This citizen's actions likely saved property loss for several individuals, and helped identify a suspect in numerous crimes," Wilkins noted.

Tennessee man arrested in connection with Abilene burglaries

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Jury selection has begun in the trial of a woman charged with killing a 24-year-old woman who disappeared after a Tinder date and whose dismembered remains later were found in trash bags along remote gravel roads in Nebraska.

Bailey Boswell, 26, faces the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder in the November 2017 slaying of Sydney Loofe, who was a store clerk in Lincoln. Boswell had arranged a date with Loofe through the internet dating app - a date from which Loofe never returned.

Boswell's boyfriend, 54-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/7242eab656f64cd99b8780881e67deab" target="_blank">Aubrey Trail,&nbsp;</a>was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in Loofe's death in July 2019. Trail testified that he accidentally choked Loofe to death during a sex party that involved Boswell.

Boswell's trial was moved from Saline County, where she and Trail lived, to Dawson County because of extensive publicity.

On Wednesday, a special prosecutor handling the case asked jurors if they had read or heard anything about the case. Nearly all indicated that they had heard about the case, and most nodded when asked if they had gotten their information from news accounts.

Trail, a Kansas convict who specialized in fraud and deception, went on social media shortly after Loofe was reported missing to proclaim in a video that he and Boswell had nothing to do with her disappearance. Boswell has said she dropped Loofe off in Lincoln after their date and had no idea where she was.

During his trial, Trail slashed his own neck in front of jurors, but survived. Prosecutors have called Trail a conman. He is scheduled for sentencing in December.

LINDSBORG -- A Lindsborg girl received national notoriety earlier this month when she was crowned the first ever National Miss Elementary America-5th Grade.

Braelyn Whittaker, 10, joined more than 150 elementary school aged girls to compete for the inaugural titles of 2020 Miss Elementary America in Little Rock, Arkansas from Sept. 5-12. She is the daughter of Lance and Shelley Whittaker and a fifth grader at Smoky Valley Middle School in Lindsborg.

Braelyn represented the state of Kansas in the 5th grade division where she competed in formal wear, fashion runway, and community service.

The Miss Elementary America's National platform is B.R.A.V.E. - Building Respect And Values for Everyone. Braelyn has made numerous presentations, focusing on anti-bullying on our local schools, and will continue to raise awareness as a national titleholder. Braelyn enjoys teaching children how to reduce the effects of bullying, and how to create a safe environment in their communities. From reading anti-bullying books to preschool and elementary children, to having children take the B.R.A.V.E. Pledge, Braelyn is proving that we can all make a difference!

Lindsborg girl crowned 1st National Miss Elementary America-5th Grade

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas felon arrested in connection with two cases of sex assault has made his first court appearance in the case this week.

 Patrick Newborn, 33, Wichita, was charged with 2 counts of aggravated burglary, 3 counts of aggravated robbery, rape, attempted rape, 2 counts of aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated assault, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement, 3 counts of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and battery.&nbsp; The last charge is a misdemeanor while the previous counts are felonies, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On August 29, Wichita police began a sexual assault and robbery investigation following an incident reported in the 6100 Block of East Boston, according to Captain Jason Stephens.

Two victims reported an attempted robbery at gunpoint. The female victims reported the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Patrick Newborn of Wichita, had committed a sexual assault against her one to two weeks earlier, according to Stephens.

On Sept. 13, police investigated another sexual assault involving a different victim at a residence in the 700 Block of South Pershing in Wichita. Investigators determined the cases were likely connected and later confirmed that.

On Sept. 15, police learned that Newborn was wanted on a felony warrant for being a parole absconder, according to Stephens. Officers located him Tuesday in 9100 Block of East Harry in Wichita. Upon confronting him, Newborn pulled a handgun and threatened the officers.

The officers retreated from the residence and called in the SWAT team. The SWAT team established a perimeter around the location and spent 7 hours communicating with Newborn.

Just after 1a.m. Sept. 16, he gave himself up and was taken into custody without further incident, according to Stephens.

He has a previous conviction for Aggravated Indecent Liberties, Sex Intercourse with a victim under the age of 16, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Newborn is being held on a bond of $250,000.&nbsp; Attorneys in the case are scheduled to discuss it with Judge Jeff Syrios on October 1, according to the district attorney's office.

Even with the court closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic and Washington already consumed with talk of Ginsburg’s replacement, the justice’s former colleagues, family, close friends and the public will have the chance Wednesday and Thursday to pass by the casket of the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

The sad occasion is expected to bring together the remaining eight justices for the first time since the building was closed in March and they resorted to meetings by telephone.

Ginsburg will lie in repose for two days at the court where she served for 27 years and, before that, argued six cases for gender equality in the 1970s.

Following a private ceremony Wednesday in the court’s Great Hall, her casket will be moved outside the building to the top of the court’s front steps so that public mourners can pay their respects in line with public health guidance for the pandemic.

Since her death Friday evening, people have been leaving flowers, notes, placards and all manner of Ginsburg paraphernalia outside the court in tribute to the woman who became known in her final years as the “Notorious RBG.” Court workers cleared away the items and cleaned the court plaza and sidewalk in advance of Wednesday’s ceremony.

Following past practice at the tradition-laden court, Ginsburg’s casket is expected to arrive just before 8:30 a.m. CDT Wednesday, the court said. Supreme Court police will carry it up the court steps, which will be lined by former Ginsburg law clerks serving as honorary pallbearers.

Chief Justice John Roberts and the other justices will be in the Great Hall when the casket arrives and is placed on the Lincoln Catafalque, the platform on which President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin rested in the Capitol rotunda in 1865. A 2016 portrait of Ginsburg by artist Constance P. Beaty will be displayed nearby.

It’s unclear whether President Donald Trump would visit the court before he leaves town Wednesday afternoon, though he did pay respects when Justice John Paul Stevens died last year and President Barack Obama visited the court after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016.

The entrance to the courtroom, along with Ginsburg’s chair and place on the bench next to Roberts, have been draped in black, a longstanding court custom. These visual signs of mourning, which in years past have reinforced the sense of loss, will largely go unseen this year. The court begins its new term Oct. 5, but the justices will not be in the courtroom and instead will hear arguments by phone.

After the private ceremony inside the court, Ginsburg’s casket will be on public view from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, Ginsburg will lie in state at the Capitol, the first woman to do so and only the second Supreme Court justice after William Howard Taft. Taft had also been president. Rosa Parks, a private citizen as opposed to a government official, is the only woman who has lain in honor at the Capitol.

Ginsburg will be buried beside her husband, Martin, in a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery next week. Martin Ginsburg died in 2010. She is survived by a son and a daughter, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Ginsburg’s death from cancer at age 87 has added another layer of tumult to an already chaotic election year. Trump and Senate Republicans are plowing ahead with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/be4aa94786c66bd13763ea8ee30e08a6">plans to have a new justice on the bench</a>, perhaps before the Nov. 3 election.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man in connection with a violent attack.

Just after 10 p.m. on Monday, police responded to an assault report at a home in the 3900 block of North Litchfield in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson

 Upon arrival, officers contacted a 17-year-old girl who was visibly shaken and wet. The investigation revealed 19-year-old Dominic Thomas and the victim were talking near a pond at 37th Street North and Sullivan when a disturbance occurred. 

During the disturbance, Thomas battered the girl, drug her to a nearby pond and held her head under the water. Thomas then released her and fled.

Officers later located Thomas, and he was arrested without further incident and booked him on requested charges of&nbsp;&nbsp;attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to Davidson.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 26, 2020 at the Commercial Building at the Fairgrounds, Belleville, KS. This will be an informal gathering in memory of Jon that will begin at 2:00 PM and friends are welcome to come and go as they wish. Casual attire is requested.

Jon R. Snapp, 49, of Belleville, KS, passed away on September 1, 2020 at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS. Jon was born March 28, 1971 in Manhattan, KS the son of Lawrence B. Coleman, Jr., and Dianna K. (Trzicky) Snapp. Lawrence was killed in Vietnam when Jon was 4 months old and was later adopted by Thomas J. Snapp when he was 6 years old.

Jon grew up in Belleville and graduated from Belleville High School in 1989. He then attended Arizona Automotive Institute where he received degrees in diesel mechanics and automotive technology. Jon worked for Ken-Boy Motors in Hebron, NE until 1998 as a service manager and mechanic. He then owned and operated Snapp’s Service on Highway 36 in Belleville with his wife Karen for 6 years. Jon then began working for Melton Motors and was still employed there up until his cancer diagnosis. In addition to being an ASE Certified Mechanic, he was a General Motors Master Technician. In 2007, Jon was named a World Class Technician, a highly prestigious award from General Motors.

On June 27, 1993, he was united in marriage to Karen Morrissey. In 1995, Jon (at only 24 yrs. old) and Karen graciously adopted three teenage children: Jeremy, Shannon, and Amy.

Jon was an Eagle Scout and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS. He was a musician and played drums in the high school band. Jon was a self-taught craftsman. He had an amazing ability to repair or build any project you placed before him. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and in the great outdoors.

Jon was preceded in death by his biological Father, Lawrence B. Coleman, Jr; his grandparents, George &amp; Jane Trzicky and Bill &amp; Wilma Snapp; and his Father-in-Law, William Morrissey.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Snapp of Belleville, KS; Children, Jeremy R. Snapp of Marquette, KS, Dr. Shannon (Randall) Snapp of San Francisco, California, and Amy Michelle Frank of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Emilie Snapp, Lily Frank, and Ronan Fleming; Parents, Tom and Dianna Snapp of Belleville, KS; one Brother, Jeremy J. (Gretta) Snapp of Belleville, KS; Sister-in-law, Kathy (Mark) Jarvey of Chino, California; Brother-in-law, James (Tanya) Morrissey of Kansas City, MO; Mother-in-law, Neomia Morrissey of Belleville, KS; niece and nephew, Frankie &amp; Farmer Snapp; other nieces /nephews &amp; relatives; and his puppies, Maycee Mae and Lucy Lou.

Jon was born March 28, 1971 in Manhattan, KS the son of Lawrence B. Coleman, Jr., and Dianna K. (Trzicky) Snapp. Lawrence was killed in Vietnam when Jon was 4 months old and was later adopted by Thomas J. Snapp when he was 6 years old.Jon grew up in Belleville and graduated from Belleville High School in 1989. He then attended Arizona Automotive Institute where he received degrees in diesel mechanics and automotive technology. Jon worked for Ken-Boy Motors in Hebron, NE until 1998 as a service manager and mechanic. He then owned and operated Snapp’s Service on Highway 36 in Belleville with his wife Karen for 6 years. Jon then began working for Melton Motors and was still employed there up until his cancer diagnosis. In addition to being an ASE Certified Mechanic, he was a General Motors Master Technician. In 2007, Jon was named a World Class Technician, a highly prestigious award from General Motors.On June 27, 1993, he was united in marriage to Karen Morrissey. In 1995, Jon (at only 24 yrs. old) and Karen graciously adopted three teenage children: Jeremy, Shannon, and Amy.Jon was an Eagle Scout and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS. He was a musician and played drums in the high school band. Jon was a self-taught craftsman. He had an amazing ability to repair or build any project you placed before him. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and in the great outdoors.Jon was preceded in death by his biological Father, Lawrence B. Coleman, Jr; his grandparents, George &amp; Jane Trzicky and Bill &amp; Wilma Snapp; and his Father-in-Law, William Morrissey.He is survived by his wife, Karen Snapp of Belleville, KS; Children, Jeremy R. SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on new drug charges.

Just before 12:30 a.m. Monday, deputies made contact with Madison M. Scharff, 24, of Topeka, who was a passenger in a vehicle the 300 block of NE 35th Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 During the investigation, deputies located narcotics and drug paraphernalia. They arrested Scharff and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine.
